Abstract
Description
[0001] RELEASABLE LEG SUPPORT FOR A FLEXIBLE LEG SUPPORTING MEMBRANE FOR SUPPORTING AGAINST LATERAL MOVEMENT OF A KNEE OR LOWER LEG RESTING AGAINST THE FLEXIBLE LEG SUPPORTING MEMBRANE
[0002] Field of the invention
[0003] The present invention relates to a releasable leg support for a flexible leg supporting membrane, a flexible leg supporting membrane comprising a releasable leg support, and a patient standing and raising aid comprising a flexible leg supporting membrane with a releasable leg support.
[0004] Background of the invention
[0005] Flexible leg supporting membranes for patient standing and raising aids are used to provide extra support to patients moving between a raising and lowering position. During the movement, the patient may position his or her knees against flexible leg supporting membranes being arranged in front of the patient on the standing and raising aid. The flexible leg supporting membranes are commonly arranged as a structural and integrated part of the patient standing and raising aids. During use, the patient's knees resting on the flexible leg supporting membrane might move laterally side to side or towards each other. This lateral movements of the knees are mostly encountered by patients with stability and strength issues and can cause pain due to the knees touching each other (impact or skin shearing) or doing unusual movements. Another issue that may arise is with the use of a flexible leg supporting membrane with patients living with dementia. Their knees are sinking into the flexible leg supporting membrane and it can cause them to panic. The flexible leg supporting membrane are flexible to allow a more natural movement of the patient during the sit to stand action. Attempts have been made to overcome this by constructing flexible leg supporting membranes comprising a middle support extending out from the flexible leg supporting membrane towards the patient for the patient to position the knees on each side of the middle support. This solution and other solutions have had the drawback that flexible leg supporting membranes have become large and bulky. The drawback has resulted in problems for patients when entering and exiting the patient standing and raising aids as the flexible leg supporting membranes with the middle support may cause difficulty for patients to manoeuvre around the middle support with their knees or legs.
[0006] Summary of the invention
[0007] An object of the present invention is to provide a releasable leg support for a flexible leg supporting membrane which minimize lateral movement of the knees and that can be easily be removed and reinstalled to the flexible leg supporting membrane depending on the need of the patient.
[0008] A further object is to provide a leg support that will stay in place on the flexible leg supporting membrane during the loading and transportation of the patient.
[0009] A further object is to provide a flexible leg supporting membrane comprising a releasable leg support.
[0010] Another object is to provide a standing and raising aid comprising a flexible leg supporting membrane with a releasable leg support.
[0011] The objects are achieved with a releasable leg support, a flexible leg supporting membrane and a standing and raising aid according to the claims.
[0012] According to one embodiment, the embodiment relates to a releasable leg support for a flexible leg supporting membrane arranged to support against lateral movement of a knee or lower legs against the flexible leg supporting membrane. The flexible leg supporting membrane is adopted for being arranged on a patient standing and raising aid. The releasable leg support includes a back surface and at least one support surface. Further, the releasable leg support has a longitudinal length which is longer than a width of the releasable leg support. On the back surface, at an upper part of the releasable leg support, a first connecting element is arranged. At a lower part on the back surface, a second connecting element is arranged. The first and second connecting elements includes a material which is different than the material of the back surface. The first connecting element is U-shaped and includes a first inner lateral bottom part which is parallel to the width of the releasable leg support. The first connecting element is arranged to include a first opening which is opposite the inner lateral bottom part and arranged to face towards the lower part of the releasable leg support. The first connecting element is adopted to releasably connect against an upper edge of the flexible leg supporting membrane such that the inner lateral bottom part is adopted to contact against said upper edge. The connecting element has the effect the releasable leg support can be releasable arranged against the flexible leg supporting membrane.
[0013] According to one embodiment, the second connecting element is U-shaped comprising a second inner lateral bottom part which is parallel to the width of the releasable leg support and which second connecting element comprises a second opening facing towards the upper part. This has the effect that when the first and the second connecting element are connected to the flexible leg supporting membrane at two locations, the releasable leg support is prevented from rotating with respect to the flexible leg supporting membrane.
[0014] According to one embodiment, the first connecting element comprises a first clip mechanism which is arranged to apply a compressive force against part of the flexible leg supporting membrane when arranged in the first clip mechanism. The first clip mechanism is arranged to cooperate with a first sliding mechanism which is arranged to slide with respect to the first clip mechanism between a release position and lock position for locking the releasable leg support to the flexible leg supporting membrane. This has the effect the releasable leg support can be secured against the flexible leg supporting membrane. During use this may be desired because a patient may push with his or her leg against one side on the releasable leg support whereby the releasable leg support then may risk moving with respect to the flexible leg supporting membrane causing harm to the patient.
[0015] According to one embodiment, the first clip mechanism has a width parallel to the width of the releasable leg support and which width of the first clip mechanism extends over a majority of the width across the back surface between a first and second long edge of the back surface. When the releasable leg support is connected against the flexible leg supporting membrane, the width of the first clip mechanism has the effect it improves stability of the releasable leg support with respect to the flexible leg supporting membrane reducing possible risk for the releasable leg support to turn or twist when affected by a force against the one of the support surfaces.
[0016] According to one embodiment, the second connecting element comprises a second clip mechanism arranged to apply a compressive force against part of the flexible leg supporting membrane when the flexible leg supporting membrane is arranged in the second clip mechanism. The second clip mechanism cooperates with a second sliding mechanism arranged to slide with respect to the second clip mechanism between a release position and lock position for locking the releasable leg support to the flexible leg supporting membrane. With the second clip mechanism cooperating with the second sliding mechanism, the releasable leg support may be locked and secured against the flexible leg supporting membrane whereby the releasable leg support is prevented from possible twisting or sliding movement with respect to the flexible leg supporting membrane during use.
[0017] According to one embodiment, the second clip mechanism has a width parallel to the width of the releasable leg support and which width of the second clip mechanism extends over most of a width across the back surface between a first and second long edge. This has the effect the stability with respect to the flexible leg supporting membrane is enhanced because the second clip mechanism is an addition to the first clip mechanism whereby possible risk turning and twisting movement of the releasable with respect to the flexible leg supporting membrane is reduced.
[0018] According to one embodiment, the back surface is arranged with a surface structure which is different from the surface structure of the first and second support surface. The surface structure of the back surface has a higher coefficient of friction in comparison to the surface structure of the first and second support surface. The coefficient of friction of the back surface may be closer to a coefficient of friction of a supporting membrane of the flexible leg supporting membrane than the coefficient of friction of the respective first and second support surface. A high coefficient of friction between the back surface and the supporting membrane of the flexible leg supporting membrane is desired as it may improve the connection between the back surface and the flexible leg supporting membrane.
[0019] According to one embodiment, a middle surface is arranged between the first and the second support surface and the middle surface has a width which is narrower than the width of the releasable leg support. The middle surface extends parallel and at a distance from the back surface between the upper part and the lower part. One effect of the middle surface is that middle part of the releasable leg support during use is directed towards the patient legs and is exposed to continuous wear. If the middle part would have been arranged as an edge or sharp arrangement towards the patient, the material of the releasable leg support at this part would quickly be worn out because of wear from the patient against the material. Therefore, having a middle part which comprises a flat surface instead of an edge formed shape makes the releasable leg support more resistant to wear.
[0020] According to one embodiment, the middle surface, with respect to its distance to the back surface, in the upper part has an inclined extension to a first short edge of the back surface. Further, the middle surface, with respect to its distance to the back surface, in the lower part has an inclined extension to a second short edge of the back surface. The effect of the inclined extension of the middle surface in the upper part and in the lower part is that a smooth upper part and lower part of the releasable leg support is achieved. The smoothness has the effect that the releasable leg support does not comprises sharp edges compared to if the releasable leg support would have been made with a shape of, for example, a square box.
[0021] According to one embodiment, elements and surfaces on the releasable leg support are arranged symmetrically with respect to each other for the releasable leg support to be positioned against the flexible leg supporting membrane independently of its longitudinal orientation. This has the effect that a patient, or a person helping the patient, don't have to think about the longitudinal orientation of the releasable leg support when connecting it to the flexible leg supporting membrane. According to one embodiment, an inner part of the releasable leg support comprises a foam of polyurethane. Polyethene has the positive effect that it is resistance to water, oil, grease and other liquidous substances as well as that it has strong bonding properties whereby it is suitable for shaping of the releasable leg support, for example during manufacture of the releasable leg support.
[0022] According to one embodiment, the embodiment is a flexible leg supporting membrane comprising a releasable leg support according to the features described above.
[0023] According to one embodiment, the flexible leg supporting membrane comprises a supporting membrane arranged to connect with the first and second clip mechanisms arranged on the releasable leg support. The supporting membrane is a flat element comprising a thickness such that its thickness is arranged to fit in the respective clip mechanism. The respective clip mechanisms are arranged to receive the supporting membrane by enclosing around the edge part of the supporting membrane whereby the supporting membrane is in connected and locked position.
[0024] According to one embodiment, the embodiment is a standing and raisinging aid comprising a flexible leg supporting membrane according to the features described above.

[0040] Detailed description of preferred embodiment of the invention
[0041] Fig 1 illustrates a patient standing and raising aid 3. The patient standing and raising aid 3 comprises a flexible leg supporting membrane 2. On the flexible leg supporting membrane 2 is a releasable leg support 1 arranged. The flexible leg supporting membrane 2 comprises a supporting membrane 25. An upper edge 28 is arranged at an upper part of the supporting membrane 25. A lower edge 29 is arranged at a lower part of the supporting membrane 25. The releasable leg support 1 is secured and locked to its position against the supporting membrane 25 via a first and second connecting element 12a, b, 13 (see Fig 3 and 4). The first and second connecting element 12a, b, 13 are attached to the upper and lower edge 28, 29 of the supporting membrane 25. During use, a patient may use the patient standing and raising aid 3 to facilitate raising and lowering of the patient between a sitting and standing position (not shown in figure). During the raising and lowering activity, the patient may position his or her knees or lower legs against the flexible leg supporting membrane 2 for support and stabilisation during the activity. The releasable leg support 1 is arranged between the knees or the lower legs for providing support against lateral movement of the knees or lower legs. During said activity, the patient may stand with his or her feet on a feet stand 30 and with his or her hands holding on to a handle element 30. The patient holding on to the handle element 30, the patient will be able to facilitate his or hers raising and lowering movement. When a patient shall exit the patient standing and raising aid 3, for example being in a sitting position, the releasable leg support 1 may be removed from the flexible leg supporting membrane 2 (not shown in figure) to make more space between the legs and standing and raising aid 3 to facilitate movements of the legs away from the standing and raising aid 3.
[0042] Fig 2 illustrates the releasable leg support 1 as seen from a patients view during use. The releasable leg support 1 comprises at least one support surface 6 that is a wrap around surface that support both side of the leg support 1 and two sections 15, 16 on the top and on the bottom of the leg support 1.
[0043] In another embodiment, as shown in fig 7, the releasable leg support 1 comprises a first support surface 6a and a second support surface 6b. Between the first and second support surface 6a, 6b, a middle surface 6c is arranged, together they are arranged as a wrap around surface that support both side of the leg support. The leg support further comprises two sections 15, 16 on the top and bottom of the leg support, which also is part of the middle surface 6c.
[0044] The releasable leg support 1 comprises three imaginary parts being an upper part 10, a main part 32, and a lower part 11. The purpose of the imaginary parts 10, 11, 32 are to facilitate explanation and understanding of the different components and elements for a reader in regards of this text. The releasable leg support 1 has a longitudinal length 26 extending between a first short edge 5 and a second short edge 8 of the releasable leg support 1. The longitudinal length 26 is seen as a centralised longitudinal length 26. The longitudinal length 26 is longer than a width T1 of the releasable leg support 1, which width T1 is defined as the length between a first and second long edge 7, 9 of the releasable leg support 1. The width T1 is seen as a centralised width which is lateral arranged with respect to the longitudinal length 26. A cross section between the longitudinal length 26 and the width T1 defines a middle point of the releasable leg support 1. As shown in fig 2-4, the support surface 6 is parallel to the centralised longitudinal length 26 and extends from the upper part 10, through the main part 32, and to the lower part 11. The support surface 6 is made from one same type of material. The material of these surfaces is PU coated polyester. PU is short for Polyurethane. An advantage of PU coated polyester is that it is a lightweight polyester fabric which is flame retardant and water repellent whereby it is easy to maintain and keep clean.
[0045] As shown in fig 7-9, the middle surface 6c is parallel to the centralised longitudinal length 26 and extends from the upper part 10, through the main part 32, and to the lower part 11. In the main part 32, the middle surface 6c has a width which is shorter than a width of the respective first and second support surface 6a, 6b. The first, second and middle surface 6a, 6b, 6c are made from one same type of material. The material of these surfaces is PU coated polyester. PU is short for Polyurethane. An advantage of PU coated polyester is that it is a lightweight polyester fabric which is flame retardant and water repellent whereby it is easy to maintain and keep clean.
[0046] Fig 3 and 8 illustrates the releasable leg support 1 from a side view. The releasable leg support 1 comprises a back surface 4 which is arranged to face against the supporting membrane 25 (see Fig 1). In one embodiment, as shown in fig 8, in the main part 32, the middle surface 6c is arranged parallel to the back surface 4 and arranged at distance from the back surface 4. This distance may be substantially equal, or slightly shorter, to the width T1 (see Fig 7) of the releasable leg support 1. In one embodiment, the distance is equal to a width of the connecting element 12a, b, 13. In the upper part 10, the middle surface 6c has an inclined extension from the upper part of the main part 32 to a first short edge 5 on the releasable leg support 1. In the lower part 11, the middle surface 6c has an inclined extension from the lower part of the main part 32 to a second short edge 8. The upper part of the main part 32 borders to the upper part 10. The lower part of the main part 32 borders to the lower part 11. In the upper part 10, on the back surface 4, a first connecting element 12a, b is arranged. In the lower part 11, on the back surface 4, a second connecting element 13 is arranged. In Fig 3 and 8, the connecting elements 12a, b, 13 are illustrated from a side view whereby the connecting elements 12a, b, 13 are U-shaped. The connecting elements 12a, b, 13 are attached to the back surface 4 by glue or by stiches, or with a combination of glue and stiches. In one embodiment, the connecting elements 12a, b, 13 may be formed integrally together with the back surface 4. In one embodiment, the back surface 4 and the connecting elements 12a, b, 13 may be formed as one unit.
[0047] The first connecting element 12a, b comprises a first inner lateral bottom part 14. The first inner lateral bottom part 14 is arranged with two opposite leg elements extending parallel away from the first inner lateral bottom part 14. Opposite the first inner later bottom part 14, a first opening 17 is arranged. The leg elements of the first connecting element 12a, b may be arranged as a first clip mechanism 20 whereby one of the leg elements, or both the leg elements, with respect to each other exhibits a spring back effect towards the opposite leg element resulting in a holding force against an element placed in the first clip mechanism 20 between the leg elements.
[0048] The second connecting element 13 comprises a second inner lateral bottom part 18. The second inner lateral bottom part 18 is arranged with two opposite leg elements extending parallel away from the second inner lateral bottom part 18. Opposite the second inner later bottom part 18, a second opening 19 is arranged. The leg elements of the second connecting element 13 may be arranged as a second clip mechanism 22 whereby one of the leg elements, or both the leg elements, with respect to each other exhibits a spring back effect towards the opposite leg element resulting in a holding force against an element placed in the second clip mechanism 22 between the leg elements.
[0049] Fig 3 and 8 further illustrates the first inner lateral bottom part 14 and the second inner lateral part 18 arranged opposite each other. The respective inner lateral part 14, 18 are arranged such that their respective opposite outer surface are arranged in a substantial alignment with the first short edge 5 respective with the second short edge 8. In one embodiment, the distance between the opposite inner lateral parts 14, 18 is slightly longer than the length of the supporting membrane 25 over the area of the supporting membrane 25 which the releasable leg support 1 is arranged to be connected against. An effect of this that the supporting membrane 25, over its connecting area with the releasable leg support 1, may apply a pressing effect from its upper and lower edges 28, 29 against the respective first inner lateral part 14 and second inner later part 18. The effect may then further result in improved connection between the supporting membrane 25 and the releasable leg support 1.
[0050] In one embodiment, the first connecting element 12a, b is larger and taller than the second connecting element 13, but both have the same purpose, thickness and usability.
[0051] In one embodiment, two leg supports 1 are used simultaneously on each side of the flexible leg supporting membrane 25. The second connecting element 13 fit into the first connecting element 12a, b. To make this assembly, the first connecting element 12a, b of each leg support 1 needs to be assembled or slide on the flexible leg supporting membrane edges 28, 29 first and then the small second connection element 13 can slide onto the flexible leg supporting membrane 28, 29 and into the first connection element 12a, b. Both connection elements 12a, b, 13 can hold on the flexible leg supporting membrane edges 28, 29 by themselves or assembled together. Both connection elements 12a, b, 13 are U-shaped and have thicker internal section to compress the flexible leg supporting membrane 25 by making it wave into the connection core.
[0052] The back surface 4 is arranged with a surface structure which is different from the surface structure of the support surfaces 6, 6a, 6b, 6c to minimize the movement of the connection element versus the fabric of the back surface 4. The fabric of the support surfaces 6, 6a, 6b, 6c is soft for the patient comfort and the back part 4 is rigid to give strength to the cushion.
[0053] Fig 4a-c and fig 9 illustrates the releasable leg support 1 from a back view. The back surface 4 is arranged between the two opposite first and second long edge 7, 9, as well as between the two opposite first and second short edge 5, 8. Fig 4b-c illustrates the releasable leg support from a perspective back view and a back view with an opening 36 provided in the back surface 4. This opening 36 is used to remove the inner part of the releasable leg support, if the is a need. Such as cleaning or changing the inner part.
[0054] In the upper part 10, the first connecting element 12a, b is arranged. The first connecting element 12a, b comprises the first clip mechanism 20 adopted to apply a spring back effect against an element, for example the supporting membrane 25, arranged to be received and partly encapsuled by the first clip mechanism 20 in regards of its U-shape. The first clip mechanism 20 may cooperate with a first sliding mechanism 21 which is arranged to be positioned in a lock position and a release position. In the lock position, the first sliding mechanism 21 is moved from a release position and arranged to slide into a cooperating position with the first clip mechanism 20. The first clip mechanism 20 applying a spring back effect, cooperating with the first sliding mechanism 21 to a lock position, will provide a further compressive force against an element arranged inside the first clip mechanism 20. In the lock position, the element placed inside the first clip mechanism 20 may be released when the first sliding mechanism 20 has returned to a release position reducing the compressive force.
[0055] In the lower part 11, the second connecting element 13 is arranged. The second connecting element 13 comprises the second clip mechanism 22 adopted to apply a spring back effect against an element, for example the supporting membrane 25, arranged to be received and partly encapsuled by the second clip mechanism 22 in regards of its U-shape. The second clip mechanism 22 may cooperate with a second sliding mechanism 23 which is arranged to be positioned in a lock position and a release position. In the lock position, the second sliding mechanism 23 is moved from a release position and arranged to slide into a cooperating position with the second clip mechanism 22. The second clip mechanism 22 applying a spring back effect, cooperating with the second sliding mechanism 22 to the lock position, will provide a further compressive force against an element arranged inside the second clip mechanism 22. In the lock position, the element placed inside the second clip mechanism 22 may be released when the second sliding mechanism 23 has returned to a release position reducing the compressive force.
[0056] Fig 5a-b and fig 10 illustrates the first connecting element 12a, b. In one embodiment, as shown in fig 4a-c, the first connecting element 12a, b is larger and taller than the second connecting element 13. In one embodiment, as shown in fig 9, the first and the second connecting elements 12a, b, 13 are equal with respect to other. But both have the same purpose, thickness and usability. Therefore, because the first and second connecting element 12a, b, 13 comprises the same and corresponding elements, only the first connecting element 12a, b will here forth with respect to Fig 5a-b an fig 10 be described. The first connecting element 12a, b comprises the first clip mechanism 20 which is arranged to cooperate with the first sliding mechanism 21. The first clip mechanism 20 comprises the first inner lateral bottom part 14. Opposite the first inner lateral bottom part 14 is a first opening 17 arranged. The first clip mechanism 20 has a spring back effect whereby it will apply a compressive force against an element being arranged inside the first clip mechanism 20. The first sliding mechanism 21 is arranged to move between a lock position and a release position. The movement of the first sliding mechanism 21 is performed in a direction being transverse the extension of the first inner lateral bottom part 14. The first sliding mechanism 21 is arranged to slide with respect to the first clip mechanism 20 along a first track 33 on an outside 34 of the first clip mechanism 20. On an inside of the first clip mechanism 20, on a leg element which is adopted to be arranged against the back surface 4 of the releasable leg support 1, a second track 35 parallel with the first inner lateral bottom part 14 is arranged. This second track 35 extends along the whole width on the inside of the first clip mechanism 20. The second track 35 is arranged to hold a strap (not shown in figure), which strap is arranged to extend through the first clip mechanism 20 and arranged to be connected on each side of the first clip mechanism 20 against the back surface 4 to secure the first clip mechanism 20 against the back surface 4.
[0057] Fig 6 and fig 11 illustrates a cross view of the releasable leg support 1.
[0058] In the cross view shown in fig 6 it is illustrated the back surface 4 on one side is arranged with the support surface 6 via the intermediate first long edge 7 and on the other side is arranged with the intermediate second long edge 9. Against the back surface 5 a first connecting element 12a, b is arranged. In this cross view it is only the first connecting element 12a, b which is illustrated and which first inner lateral bottom part 14 is arranged facing towards the reader of this text. Inside the releasable leg support 1, an inner part 24 is arranged comprising a foam material of polyurethane.
[0059] In the cross view shown in fig 11 it is illustrated the back surface 4 on one side is arranged with the first support surface 6a via the intermediate first long edge 7 and on the other side is arranged with the second support surface 6b via the intermediate second long edge 9. Opposite the back surface 4, a middle surface 6c is arranged between the first and second support surface 6a, 6b. Against the back surface 6c a first connecting element 12a, b is arranged. In this cross view it is only the first connecting element 12a, b which is illustrated and which first inner lateral bottom part 14 is arranged facing towards the reader of this text. Inside the releasable leg support 1, an inner part 24 is arranged comprising a foam material of polyurethane.
[0060] Hereinbefore it has been described that the releasable leg support is to be arranged on a flexible leg supporting membrane for a patient standing and raising aid. It will be appreciated that the principles described above may be applied to releasable leg support and flexible leg supporting membranes of other types as well.
