Description

[0001] The present invention relates to a two-piece fastener for mounting walls panels to a mounting surface such as a wall e.g. for either decorative or isolating purposes. The present invention also relates to a system comprising both a wall panel and a fastener. Background of the invention

[0002] It is generally known to mount metal wall panels to facades and before mounting it is normally needed to process the metal wall panels in various ways e.g. by cutting, drilling, milling, and / or bending. Installation can then be done with screws, rivets and glue as flat panels, or as different types of cassette solutions, where the metal wall panels have been processed with substantial work effort and machinery in workshops.

[0003] This is to obtain a desired look or expression of a building.

[0004] However, these types of processing and installation of the wall panels are very expensive in such cost as energy (electricity) labor intensive (manpower), and transport cost of cassettes to construction site. In most cases, it is not possible to reinstall already mounted metal wall panels without destroying either panels and / or sub-construction.

[0005] Even small reductions in the process in workshop, where drilling, better transport optimization, less manual labor during installation is considered as a significant improvement and will result in a more cost effective and sustainable use of materials.

[0006] US 2015 / 0292215 A1 discloses a system for mounting a plurality of wall panels to a supporting structure which system includes a plurality of fasteners. The wall panels according to the disclosed system include a main panel and at least one L-shaped end section. Each of the fasteners include a base section having spaced apart walls providing an opening therebetween. Opposing U-shaped sections are arranged coupled to the first and second walls generally facing each other. A securing section is arranged outwardly of one of the U-shaped sections for attaching the fastener to a supporting structure. The U-shaped sections respectively receive a portion of an L-shaped end section of adjacent wall panels. According to the embodiments shown in figures 2-13, the wall panels are kept in position after mounting because neighbouring wall panels exercise a pressure at each other. However, this is a problem when a wall panel needs to be replaced as it is difficult to remove a single wall panel. According to the embodiments shown in figures 14-17 two separate fasteners are positioned at a distance corresponding to a separate spacer member (78, 82), this system is complicated to mount making it necessary to fasten two individual fasteners as well as the spacer member before mounting the wall panels.

[0007] US 9834941 B1 discloses a thermal break system for securing wall panels to a wall. The fastener comprises a base section (26) seated against a mounting surface, and a U-shaped channel member (42) is positioned between bend ends of wall panels (12) and fastened with a screw (48) to the mounting surface.

[0008] GB 2135355 A discloses a cladding constituted of a basal attachment section 4 and a longitudinally extending insert member (9) attached by a screw (11).

[0009] Hence, a system and a fastener allowing simpler and faster mounting of wall panels would be considered a significant improvement.Summary of the invention

[0033] It should be noted that embodiments and features described in the context of one of the aspects of the present invention also apply to the other aspects of the invention.

[0034] Same reference numbers are used for different embodiments for same or similar parts.Wall panels

[0035] Normally, wall panels to be mounted according to the invention are composite panels e.g. comprising an outer layer made of a metal such as aluminium providing strength and a desired visual appearance, a core normally providing some kind of isolation such as thermal or acoustic isolation or fire-retardant effect, e.g. comprising a thermoplastic resin or a mineral filled polymer, and an inner layer or backing sheet e.g. of a metal such as aluminium providing a protection for the core material. However, wall panels may also be constituted of a single layer such as a metal layer.

[0036] Alternatively, the wall panels to be mounted according to the invention may be massive plates e.g. comprising a layer of metal such as aluminium or comprising a layer of another material having ornamental or isolating properties.

[0037] Preferably, the wall panels should have high impact resistance, high rigidity, and low weight. The construction of the wall panels is not part of the invention as such, and the wall panels may be acquired commercially.

[0038] Wall panels may be delivered to the mounting site as flat pieces, optionally pre-processed with milled lines along one or more of the edges making it possible to bend the mounting edges to a desired angle, which is normally an angle between 90 and 135 degrees. Also, the wall panels may be pre-processed at the mounting site e.g. by milling or bending / folding or curving or the like.

[0039] Further, the wall panels may be provided with cuts, drillings, punchings and / or stampings necessary for mounting of the wall panels, either at the site for mounting or before arriving at the mounting site.

[0040] In general, a wall panel 1 to be fastened by a fastener according to the invention may have the form of a cassette i.e. the wall panel 1 is formed from a rectangular plate where all four edges are bend to the same side or direction in such a way that the wall panel 1 forms an open box i.e. a box without a lid. Alternatively, only one or two or three sides of a rectangular wall panel 1 is bend, or the wall panel 1 may be of a different shape than rectangular.

[0041] According to a first aspect, the invention relates to a fastener for a wall panel 1 which wall panel 1 is to be mounted onto a mounting surface or wall 2 and which wall panel 1 comprises a bend or crease along a mounting edge i.e. the wall panel 1 is not flat.

[0042] In general, the fastener is a two-piece fastener comprising a first piece (3) to be secured to the mounting surface (2) and a second piece (4) to be secured either to the first piece (3) or to both the first piece (3) and the mounting surface (2).

[0043] In general, the fastener is configured to secure one, two or more wall panels (1) to a mounting surface (2), and also the fastener, especially the second piece (4) of the fastener, may be configured to add an ornamental aspect to the outer surface of a wall covered fully or partly with wall panels (1) e.g. by protruding from the surface formed by the wall panels (1) or by colour or structure.

[0044] Fig. 1 shows a first embodiment of a fastener according to the invention, the first embodiment is shown in a state where the fastener has been secured to a mounting surface or wall 2 and a wall panel 1 has been attached to the fastener.

[0045] The fastener of the first embodiment comprises two pieces: a first piece 3 and a second piece 4, both the first and the second piece are extruded i.e. each piece 3, 4 constitutes a long unit with a constant profile / cross-section which may extend in the complete length of one or more mounted wall panels 1.

[0046] Within the wall panel industry, "the first piece", being the unit that is attached to the mounting surface 2, is often referred to as a "bottom profile" or a "base profile".

[0047] The first piece 3 comprises a base part 5 comprising a top surface and a lower surface which top surface faces away from the mounting surface 2 after mounting and which lower surface faces and is in contact with the mounting surface 2 after mounting of the fastener. The base part 5 also comprises a fastening part 6 which is adapted to interlock with the wall panel 1 and fix the position of the wall panel 1. The fastening part 6 extends from the base part 5 in a 90 degrees angle and comprises a protrusion 7 which after mounting of a wall panel 1 interacts with a corresponding opening 8 of a wall panel 1 and fix the position of the wall panel 1. The fastening part 6 may extend from the base part 5 in a different angle such as an angle between or equal to 45 and 135 degrees. The corresponding opening 8 in the wall panel 1 may be a groove made by milling. Alternatively, the fastening part 6 may comprise an opening 7 interacting with a corresponding protruding part of the wall panel 1.

[0048] The first piece 3 is fastened to the wall 2 by fastening means 11. According to the embodiment of fig. 1, the fastening means 11 comprises three screws 11, and the base part 5 of the first piece 3 comprises two wings 16 extending respectively to the left and to the right of the fastening means 6 and the wings 16 are adapted to be in close contact with the surface of the wall 2 after mounting. A screw 11 may be inserted through each of the wings 16 while a screw 11 may optionally be inserted through the base part 5 between the two fastening parts 6. The screws 11 fastening the first piece 3 to the mounting surface are not necessarily placed in line or a specific cross-section as shown in the figure, a plurality of screws 11 can be placed offset relative to each other in the longitudinal direction of the first piece 3.

[0049] The first piece 3 comprises two longitudinally extending grooves or tracks constituting a first part of a click part 13. Alternatively, the first part of the click part 13 may comprise through-going openings or depressions in a different form than a groove e.g. a series of round or oval openings or depressions.

[0050] The second piece 4 comprises a first surface or wall 9 which first surface or wall 9 is parallel or approximately parallel to a corresponding surface 10 or wall of the bend or crease of a wall panel 1 when the wall panel 1 is mounted. The corresponding surface 10 comprises an opening 8 corresponding to a protruding part 7 of the fastening parts of the first piece 3. The first surface or wall 9 normally exercise a pressure on the corresponding surface 10 or is at least in contact with the corresponding surface 10 of the wall panel 1 and / or lock the part of the wall panel 1 comprising the corresponding surface or wall 10 in a secure position.

[0051] The second piece 4 according to the first embodiment has a U-shaped cross-section comprising two legs and a connecting part securing the two legs to each other, and the two legs constituting part of the U-shaped cross-section is in fig. 1 facing downwards i.e. towards the top surface of the base part 5 while the connecting part is positioned furthest away from the base part 5. The second piece 4 may be made of a flexible material or comprises flexibly mounted legs which may exercise a sideward pressure towards the bend edge of the wall panel 1 after mounting, and which material is flexible enough to give in and not break if the second piece 4 is subjected to a sideward opposite pressure from the bend edges of the wall panel 1. Such a sideward opposite pressure may occur when the wall panels 1 are subjected to thermal expansion.

[0052] The second piece 4 comprises two longitudinally and linearly extending protrusions constituting a corresponding second part of a click part 13. Alternatively, the second part of the click part 13 may comprise protruding parts in a different form than a linear protrusion e.g. round or oval protrusions. According to the embodiment of fig. 1, the second part of the click part 13 is constituted of the end of the legs of the U-shaped part.

[0053] Further, the second piece 4 is after mounting placed on top of the base part 5 of the first piece 3 between the two fastening parts 6, and the base part 5 is consequently placed between the second piece 4 and the wall 2.

[0054] A third screw 11 may be inserted through the base part 5 between the two fastening parts securing e.g. both the first piece 3 and the second piece 4 in the mounted position. The second piece 4 may then comprise a series of openings in the connecting part and a thread making it possible to secure the second piece 4 to the base part 5 of the first piece in the complete length of the first and second piece 3, 4.

[0055] The first embodiment of the fastener shown in fig. 1 may be used for mounting a wall panel according to the following method: 1 st< step: A first piece 3 of the fastener is mounted on mounting surface 2 using fastening means 11. The mounting of the first piece 3 of the fastener may be done by first fastening one central fastening means 11, where after the position of the first piece 3 and the fastening means 11 can be adjusted. Then the remaining first piece 3 fastening means 11 shown as central in the cross section of first piece 3 may be mounted. Then the remaining fastening means 11 are mounted through the wings 16 of the first piece 3 constituting a part of the base part 5. 2 nd< step: After having mounted all first pieces 3 of the fastener on the mounting surface 2, a pre-processed wall panel 1 which has been folded along all four edges to look like a cassette is provided. The bend edges of the wall panel 1 is put into position along the fastening part 6 of the first piece 3, whereafter the bend edge of a neighboring wall panel 1 cassette can is mounted in the same way. 3 rd< step: At last, a second piece 4 in a U-shape comprising legs pointing towards the base part 5 of the first piece 3 during mounting is pushed into positioned in between two corresponding surfaces of wall panels 10, the second piece 4 is then guided into place by means of the tracks constituting the first part of the click parts 13,which click parts 13 may also lock the second part 4 into position. The second piece 4 may be further secured to the wall 2 by fastening means 11 e.g. comprising screws 11 inserted through the U-shaped cross-section and through the base part 5.

[0056] The advantage is that mounting of the wall panels become simpler and easier, as only the first piece 3 of the fastener needs to be attached to the wall before mounting the wall panels. After having positioned a group of wall panels in the mounted position, e.g. a line of wall panels, the mounting of the group of wall panels 1 may be finalized by adding a neighbouring fastener and wall panel. The wall panels may be secured to the at first pieces 3 of the fastener in a simple way without using tools before the wall panels are to be secured to the fasteners by the second piece 4 and the fastening means securing the second piece 4 to the wall.

[0057] Fig. 2 shows a second embodiment of a fastener according to the invention, the second embodiment is like the embodiment of fig. 1 also shown in a state where the fastener has been secured to a mounting surface 2 and a wall panel 1 has been attached to the fastener.

[0058] The fastener of the second embodiment comprises two pieces: a first piece 3 and a second piece 4, and again both the first and the second piece 3, 4 are extruded i.e. each piece 3, 4 constitutes a long unit which may extend in the complete length of one or more mounted wall panels 1.

[0059] The first piece 3 of the second embodiment shown in fig. 2, is identical to the first piece 3 of the first embodiment shown in fig. 1 and is fastened in the same way to the mounting surface 2.

[0060] The second piece 4 is similar to the second piece of fig. 1 but is mounted differently. The second piece 4 also has a U-shaped cross-section comprising two legs and a connecting part securing the two legs to each other, however, the two legs constituting part of the U-shaped cross-section is in fig. 2 facing upwards i.e. away from the base part 5 and the connecting part of the U-shaped cross-section is positioned closest to the base part 5. The second piece 4 may be made of a flexible material or the legs may be flexibly mounted to the connecting part which makes it possible for the second piece 4 to exercise a sideward pressure towards the bend edge of the wall panel 1 after mounting, and which material is flexible enough to give in and not break if the second piece 4 is subjected to a sideward opposite pressure from the bend edges of the wall panel 1. The second piece 4 is after mounting placed on top of the base part 5 of the first piece 3 between the two fastening parts 6, and the base part 5 is consequently placed between the second piece 4 and the mounting surface 2.

[0061] The second piece 4 of this embodiment also comprises two longitudinally and linearly extending protrusions constituting a second part of a corresponding click part 13, however, the protrusions constituting the corresponding click parts are positioned at the end of the connecting part of the U-shaped cross-section. Also, the second part of the click part 13 according to this embodiment may comprise protruding parts in a different form than a linear protrusion e.g. a series of round or oval protrusions.

[0062] The screw 11 shown positioned between the legs of the U-shaped cross-section is optional and the presence of the screw may depend on the rigidity of the material constituting the second piece 4.

[0063] To protect and close the opening between two neighbouring wall panels, the gap between two neighbouring wall panels and between the two legs of the second piece 4 may be filled with a filling material 12 preventing e.g. water from penetrating into the space between the wall panels 1 and the wall 2.

[0064] The second embodiment of the fastener shown in fig. 2 may be used for mounting a wall panel according to the following method: 1 st< step: A first piece of the fastener 3 is mounted on wall 2 using fastening means 11 in the same way as described in connection with the first embodiment. 2 nd< step: Wall panels 1 formed as cassettes are provided and mounted as described for the first embodiment. 3rd step: A second piece 4 having a U-shape comprising legs pointing away from the base part 5 of the first piece 3 during mounting is positioned in between two corresponding surfaces 10 of wall panels 1, the first surface or wall 9 of second piece 4 is guided into place and locked into position by means of the tracks formed as corresponding click parts of first and second piece 13. The second piece 4 may then be further secured to the wall 2 by the central fastening means 11 and finally, a soft filling material 12 may be added to assure a certain look and / prevent the ingress of water.

[0065] Fig. 3 shows a third embodiment of a fastener according to the invention, the third embodiment comprises two neighbouring fasteners shown in a state where the two neighbouring fasteners are secured to a mounting surface 2 and a wall panel 1 has been attached to two neighbouring fasteners. Each fastener of the third embodiment comprises two pieces: a first piece 3 and a second piece 4, both the first piece 3 and the second piece 4 are advantageously prepared by extrusion i.e. each piece 3, 4 constitutes a long unit with a constant profile / cross-section which may extend in the complete length of one or more mounted wall panels 1. The two neighbouring fasteners of the third embodiments have profiles which are mirrors of each other, i.e. the first piece 3 comprises a wing 16 extending to the left for the first fastener and to the right for the second fastener, but alternatively, two neighbouring fasteners with a profile / cross-section as shown in fig. 3 may also be identical, i.e. both first pieces 3 of the fastener comprises a wing 16 extending either to the left from the fastening part 6 or to the right from the fastening part 6.

[0066] The first piece 3 is of an overall L-shape and comprises a base part 5 being in contact with the mounting surface 2 when the fastener is mounted on the mounting surface 2, and a fastening part 6 extending from a position at a first end of the base part 5. The fastening part 6 extends from the base part 5 in a 90 degrees angle and comprises a protrusion 7, after mounting of a wall panel 1 the protrusion 7 interacts with a corresponding opening 8 of the wall panel 1.

[0067] The first piece 3 is fastened to the mounting surface 2 by fastening means 11. According to the embodiment of fig. 3, the fastening means 11 comprises one screw 11, inserted through a wing 16 extending respectively to the right from the fastening part 6 of the first fastener and to the left from the fastening part 6 of the second fastener. The screws 11 are not necessarily placed in line or a specific cross-section as shown in the figure, the screws 11 can be placed offset relative to each other as the first piece 3 is normally an extruded piece.
