Description

Title of the invention: Lighting device for a passenger cabin of an aircraft, cabin equipped with said device and method for controlling at least two lamps in said cabin

[0001] The present invention relates to a lighting device for a passenger cabin of an aircraft, to a passenger cabin equipped with said device, as well as to a method of controlling at least two lamps of said cabin.

[0002] In known cabin projection systems, i.e. when projecting image contents onto interior surfaces of a passenger cabin of an aircraft, large-area images (e.g. panoramic images) are produced by distributing the image over several projectors. In addition to a cabin projection system, a passenger cabin also contains additional lamps assigned to light generation, e.g. washlights, concentrated diffusion lamps, etc.

[0003] The object of the present invention is to improve the lighting in a corresponding passenger cabin.

[0004] To this end, it proposes a lighting device for a passenger cabin of an aircraft comprising a display surface on which an image content can be reproduced, device characterized in that said surface is made up of at least two partial surfaces, for the reproduction of respective partial contents of said image content; with at least two lamps designed to be suitably located in a luminous environment of the display surface, and to diffuse light in accordance with at least one respective illumination parameter which can be modified;and with a control unit in which at least a portion of said display surface is assigned to each of the lamps, as an evaluation area, wherein an imaging prescription is assigned to each of said lamps, which prescription assigns values of the illumination parameters to an image content of said evaluation area, and in that the control unit is arranged to assign values of its illumination parameters to the image content of its evaluation area for each of the lamps, on the basis of the imaging prescription, and to drive each of said lamps, by means of said values, relative to the assigned illumination parameters. ;

[0005] The basis of the invention, respectively its organization in accordance with its objectives, resides in a passenger cabin of an aircraft containing a display surface, or equipped with the latter. Image content can be reproduced on said surface, or is respectively reproduced when said surface is in use. Said surface then consists of at least two partial surfaces. Each of these serves for the reproduction of one or more respective partial contents of said image content. The reproduced image content is based on the emission of light, for example the light from an actively illuminated screen, or the reflected light from a projector, and represents a type of light source.

[0006] The lighting device according to the invention comprises at least two lamps. At the stage of mounting said device in the aircraft, said lamps are suitably installed in a luminous environment of the display surface. Each of said lamps serves to diffuse light in accordance with at least one respective illumination parameter which can be modified (for example, the color or, respectively, the chromatic location, the brightness, the temporal appearance, etc.).The term "light environment" is understood to mean the set of all locations which are at a determined maximum distance from the display surface, and which then have the following properties: when a lamp is installed in the light environment and the latter is operated with concomitant representation of the image content, an observer can concurrently perceive the light from said lamp and said image content (or, respectively, the light accompanying it), and can combine them mutually. Said observer thus perceives, for example, harmonies and disharmonies between the brightnesses and / or colours of the two elements, respectively of the light radiation.

[0007] The lighting device is further provided with a control unit. In said unit, at least a portion of the display surface, in particular a real portion, in particular a marginal region, is assigned to each of the lamps as an evaluation area. In the control unit, an imaging prescription is also assigned to each of said lamps. Said prescription assigns, to an image content of the evaluation area of a determined lamp, values of the illumination parameters assigned to the correspondingly assigned lamp.

[0008] Furthermore, the control unit is arranged to assign values of its illumination parameters to the image content of its evaluation area for each of the lamps, on the basis of the imaging prescription, i.e. with a view to using, respectively executing said prescription in accordance with its objectives. The control unit is also arranged to control each of said lamps, by means of said values, relative to the assigned illumination parameters, such that said lamp emits (when in operation) light in accordance with the illumination parameter.

[0009] The display surface is presented in particular as a part of the surface of the passenger cabin, in particular as a ceiling area, a wall area, a floor area, etc. The term "surface" also includes those of integrated structures such as luggage racks, partition walls, columns, etc. The evaluation area is in particular not linked to the partial surfaces, or even to the separating limits of the latter, so that it can, in particular, cover the extent of two or more partial surfaces. Said area can also be composed of sub-regions separated from each other, in particular distant from each other.

[0010] The mutual assignment of the values of the illumination parameters, based on the image contents, involves an “automatic” generation of said values.

[0011] The invention is based on the following considerations and experiences: Illuminating elements are also typically present in the immediate vicinity of a display surface (e.g., a projection screen). If, for example, the projection takes place on ceiling panels embodying said display surface, the ceiling lighting or the lamps thereof are located in the immediate vicinity. Since both the image content of said projection, respectively the corresponding light, and the light generated by the lamps can be perceived concurrently by an observer, it is desirable from an optical point of view, i.e. in terms of light color, brightness and temporal appearance, to harmonize the light of said lamps with the image content represented. It is very complex to define dynamic and finely defined lighting scenarios. The basic idea of the invention is therefore to find a solution in which the light scenic tableaux can be calculated automatically. A light scenic tableau is presented as the light generated by several, or all, of the lamps in question. The lamps concerned are the illuminating elements (lamps) bordering the images. Said "images" are the display surfaces with image content. The automatic generation must result from the image content represented on the display surface, or be dependent on said content.

[0012] A special feature is that the image content is distributed over several partial surfaces, for example over several screens. The idea of the invention is to achieve, by means of harmonization, an attractive cabin ambience in which the brightness and color of the lighting system (lamps) are in accordance with the image (image content) represented. A further idea is to create the impression of a "larger projection surface" by means of the adapted lighting system.

[0013] According to the invention, the values of the illumination parameters are specified automatically, so that luminous scenic tableaux (values of the illumination parameters of a plurality of lamps) no longer have to be adjusted by hand.

[0014] According to a preferred embodiment feature of the invention, the control unit is arranged in such a way as to assign at least one of the illumination parameters and in particular all of the latter, based on the image content reproduced at the instant in question, and to control the lamps concerned by means of the effective illumination parameter(s). As a result, said image content reproduced at the instant in question is assigned to an illumination parameter, and the lamp is actuated with the corresponding illumination parameter. This procedure can be carried out once only in order to establish a suitable adaptation of said lamps. This procedure can also be repeated, in particular in the presence of changing image contents, in particular periodically, for example at 1 Hz, 20 Hz, 50 Hz or 100 Hz. In this way, the light from the lamps dynamically follows the image contents.

[0015] In a variant of the aforementioned embodiment feature, the control unit is arranged in such a way as to assign at least one of the illumination parameters and in particular all of them, on the basis of a firmly established image content, and to control the lamps concerned by means of the corresponding illumination parameter(s). This can in particular take place on the basis of a pre-calculation, for example before the start of a flight or during a rearrangement of the aircraft cabin (change of the image content). Thus, no specification of the image contents and no assignment of the illumination parameters are necessary during operation of the lighting device or, respectively, during a flight. A corresponding operating mode presupposes a previously known image content. In this way, for example, light stage scenes can already be calculated in advance for known image contents, and respective combinations can be reproduced if necessary.

[0016] According to a preferred embodiment feature of the invention, at least one of the partial contents and in particular all of the latter are generated, in operation, by a light source, and the control unit is provided with an interface with the light source(s) concerned, in order to acquire the image contents from the light source. As a result, said image contents do not necessarily have to be specified by the display surface, for example by means of a camera. Instead, the source or the raw data of the image contents are respectively evaluated. This makes it possible, in a particularly simple and reliable manner, to capture the image contents in order to process them in accordance with the assignment to the illumination parameters.

[0017] According to a preferred embodiment feature of the invention, at least one of the partial surfaces, and in particular all of the latter, are constituted by a segment of the surface of the passenger cabin, scanned by an own projector materializing a light source. By the expression "own projector", it is then understood that a respective projector generates the image content of a partial surface. In the presence of several partial surfaces of this type, each image content is consequently generated by a different projector. The corresponding projector is in particular part of the lighting device. Projectors are particularly well suited to the display of image content on complex surfaces, for example. The above-mentioned interface is particularly useful in combination with projectors, since in this case the image contents can be specified in a particularly reliable and precise manner without necessarily having to accommodate alterations due to the path followed by the projection, occultations, etc.

[0018] According to a preferred embodiment feature of the invention, at least one of the partial surfaces is constituted by a surface of a screen embodying a light source. The light source of the image content to be generated is thus presented as a screen. Here again, in the sense of the "own projector" mentioned above, each partial surface is in particular constituted by its own, i.e. different, screen. In particular, the screen concerned is again part of the lighting device. Screens allow reproduction of contents in a particularly simple manner. In this case too, the combination with a corresponding interface pointing to the screen is again available, as an option, to specify the image contents in a particularly reliable manner, with a view to mutual assignment.

[0019] According to a preferred embodiment feature of the invention, at least one of the evaluation zones can be freely positioned in the display surface. A "positioning" includes, in particular, a displacement of the zone and / or a modification of the size and / or the shape. This makes it possible to influence a principle adaptation of the mutual assignment characteristic between the illumination parameter and the image content on said display surface.

[0020] According to a preferred embodiment feature of the invention, the evaluation area has a rectangular shape. It is then possible to freely define the respective number of evaluation areas or sub-regions (see above) and / or the size of the latter and / or their aspect ratio and / or their location. A rectangular shape can be concretely achieved in a particularly simple manner with regard, in particular, to digital data to be detected, as image content, via the aforementioned interface.

[0021] According to a preferred embodiment characteristic of the invention, the illumination parameter is a brightness and / or a chromatic location of the light diffused in operation by the lamp. The illumination parameters concerned allow a particularly effective adaptation, to the image contents, of the character of the light generated by the lamps.

[0022] In a variant of the aforementioned embodiment feature, the value of the illumination parameter "brightness" is the average value of all brightnesses in the evaluation area. Alternatively or additionally, the value of the illumination parameter "color location" is the value of the focal point (geometric, in particular) of all color locations in said evaluation area. In particular in the case of digitized image content (screen or projector as light source, see above), the corresponding image pixels of the partial content can be evaluated. Here again, in particular, this works in a particularly simple and reliable manner in conjunction with the aforementioned interface, pointing to the light source.

[0023] According to a preferred embodiment feature of the invention, the light environment is constituted by the display surface itself. As a result, a corresponding lamp is then positioned inside said surface. Alternatively or additionally, said light environment is constituted by a region directly bordering said display surface, or the edge thereof. In this case, consequently, a lamp positioned in this region is directly bordering the edge of said surface. Alternatively or additionally, said light environment is constituted by a region at a distance of at most 2 meters from said surface, i.e. from the edge of the latter. Thus, a lamp positioned in this region is not more than 2 m from the edge of said surface and is installed in the environment thereof. In particular, a corresponding lamp is therefore positioned next to the display surface, directly or with space, in particular at the level of the surface of the passenger cabin which extends said display surface. Instead of 2 m, the light environment extends in particular up to a maximum distance of 1 cm, 2 cm, 3 cm, 5 cm, 7.5 cm, 10 cm, 20 cm, 30 cm, 50 cm, 75 cm, 1 m or 1.5 m from the edge of the display surface.

[0024] According to a preferred embodiment feature of the invention, the image content to be reproduced is a panoramic image, and the partial content considered is a fragment of said panoramic image. The lighting device according to the invention is particularly suitable for corresponding image contents.

[0025] According to a preferred embodiment characteristic of the invention, the control unit contains a configuration database in which at least one of the evaluation zones (respectively, the data of the latter as, e.g., location, size, shape, etc.) and / or at least one of the imaging specifications, and / or at least one of the assignments of said specifications to the lamps, is (are) stored variably. In this way, the lighting device can be adapted particularly flexibly to image contents to be displayed and / or, respectively, to a lamp configuration or to a passenger cabin in accordance with its intended purpose, in which these elements are to be integrated.

[0026] The object sought by the invention is also achieved by a passenger cabin which encloses the lighting device, according to the invention, and the display surface thereof. Furthermore, the lamps are arranged in the light environment of said surface. Furthermore, said cabin optionally encloses (if provided) the aforementioned light sources and / or the image contents to be represented or, respectively, the image data / brightness information, etc., on which the latter are based.

[0027] The passenger cabin and at least some of its embodiment features, as well as the respective advantages, have already been commented on by analogy in the context of the lighting device according to the invention.

[0028] The object of the invention is also achieved by a method for controlling at least two lamps of a passenger cabin of an aircraft, said cabin being provided with a display surface. An image content is reproduced on said surface, which comprises at least two partial surfaces. A respective partial content of said image content is reproduced on each of said partial surfaces. The lamps are arranged in a light environment of said display surface. Said lamps diffuse, in operation, light in accordance with at least one respective illumination parameter that can be modified. At least a part of the display surface is assigned to each of the lamps, as an evaluation area. An imaging prescription is assigned to each of said lamps, which prescription assigns a value of the illumination parameter to an image content of said evaluation area. For each of said lamps, values of its illumination parameters are assigned to the image content of its evaluation area, based on said prescription. Each of said lamps is controlled, by means of said values, relative to the assigned illumination parameters.

[0029] The method and at least part of its embodiment features, as well as the respective advantages, have already been commented on by analogy in the context of the lighting device and the passenger cabin respectively according to the invention.

[0030] According to a preferred embodiment characteristic of the invention, the method is implemented with the lighting device according to the invention or with the lighting booth. passengers in accordance with the invention, or even in said cabin. The corresponding objects are particularly suitable for implementing said method.

[0031] The invention is based on the experience gained, observations or considerations set out below, and also presents the embodiments commented on below. These are also referred to as "the invention", partly for simplification. Said embodiments may also contain parts or combinations of the above-mentioned embodiments, or correspond to them and / or, if appropriate, also include embodiments not mentioned heretofore.

[0032] In accordance with the invention, a coupling is established between a reproduction system dedicated to image contents (projection system) and a staging control dedicated to cabin lighting (control of luminous “stage tableaux” by actuation of the lamps with determined illumination parameters).

[0033] The invention makes possible an automated generation of static and dynamic light scenarios for illuminating elements (lamps), in the vicinity of visualization elements or projection surfaces (display surface), depending on the image content represented, so that screens (also projectors and, in general, the image content on said display surface) and a lighting system (lamps) complement each other harmoniously.

[0034] The invention achieves the target object by using flexibly definable evaluation zones in the image content represented (in the display surface) and by the flexible mutual assignment of an illuminating element (lamp) and an evaluation zone independently of the screen boundaries (partial surfaces). An evaluation zone is then formed, in the image to be represented (image content, display surface), by a region in which a representative brightness (illumination parameter) or a representative color location (illumination parameter) is respectively specified in accordance with a freely selectable algorithm (imaging prescription). In this case, possible algorithms are presented as the averaging of the brightnesses of all pixels (of the image content) in the evaluation region (evaluation area) or, respectively, as the determination of the dominant point of the color designations of all pixels, in said evaluation region, in order to specify the brightness and the color location (illumination parameters) of the assigned illuminating element (lamp). The evaluation regions, typically rectangular, can be freely defined with regard to number, aspect ratio, size and location. Said regions can, for example, be calculated in advance in a computer tool or calculated, during operation, in order to govern di- . directly the light system.

[0035] The mutual assignment of an evaluation region and an illuminating element takes place in a separate configuration database and is therefore independent of the formation of the overall image (image content) by individual images (sub-contents). Thus, it is also not imperative that the size and arrangement of the illuminating elements (lamps) coincide with those of the screens (sub-surfaces).

[0036] According to the invention, the following advantages result: the calculation of the lighting scenarios is carried out automatically, and can be carried out in advance (low computational load during subsequent operation) or during operation (greater flexibility). The number, aspect ratio, size and location of the evaluation regions can be freely defined. The arrangement of the illuminating elements (lamp or illuminated surface) is independent of the arrangement of the projected images. The lighting device can be resized as desired with regard to the projection surfaces, the evaluation area and the controlled illuminating elements.

[0037] Aspects of the invention reside, among other things, in - automatic generation of scene charts for the cabin lighting system (the proposed method can also be used to define lighting scenarios in general, for example based on a designer's project for each video), - the flexible mutual assignment of evaluation regions and an illuminating element, by means of a database, - non-dependence of lighting scenarios on the type (projectors, display elements), number and dimensions of screens, - the ability to calculate lighting scenarios in advance, or during execution time in the aircraft.

[0038] Other characteristics, effects and advantages of the invention are highlighted by the description of preferred embodiments of the invention, provided below, as well as by the block diagrams of the appended drawings in which:

[0039] [Fig-1] is a perspective representation of a passenger cabin of an aircraft, including a display surface and lamps;

[0040] [Fig.2] is a principle illustration of a lighting device according to the invention; and

[0041] [Fig.3] is a principle illustration showing part of a variant of lighting device according to the invention.

[0042] [Fig.l] is a fragmentary representation of a passenger cabin 2 of an aircraft not shown further, that is to say, essentially, of the ceiling area of said cabin comprising ceiling panels 4 and baggage racks 6. lamps 8 (light strips in this case) are interposed each time (in an indirect manner, and therefore not directly visible in [Fig.l]) between said panels 4 and said lockers 6, as respective lighting of the cabin or the ceiling. A part of said panels 4 then forms a display surface 10 on which is represented, precisely, an image content 12 materialized, in the present case, by a panoramic image of a cloudy sky.

[0043] The display surface 10 comprises, in the present case, three partial surfaces 14a to 14c reproducing, each time, a partial content 16a to 16c of the image content 12. Each of the partial contents 16a-c is generated by one of three projectors not visible in [Fig.l]. As a result, said partial surfaces 14a-c constitute respective segments of the surface of the passenger cabin 2 (of the panels 4) which are scanned by a respective one of said projectors, in order to represent the partial content 16a-c considered.

[0044] The lamps 8 are positioned in a luminous environment 18 of the display surface 10. Said environment 18 materializes the region spaced at most 30 cm from said surface 10, and is indicated by a dotted line.

[0045] The lamps 8 are part of a lighting device 20 and diffuse light 22 (symbolized only by an arrow) in operating mode.

[0046] [Fig. 2] symbolically shows, in detail, the lighting device 20 assigned to the passenger cabin 2 of [Fig. 1]. As explained above, said cabin 2 is provided with the display surface 10 comprising the partial surfaces 14a-c, on which the partial contents 16a-c associatively constituting the image content 12 are reproduced. Furthermore, the device 20 includes a total of twenty-four lamps 8 grouped in respective groups of four, knowing that three groups of four considered form one of the two light strips mentioned in [Fig. 1]. All the lamps 8 are located in the light environment 18 of the display surface 10. In operating mode, each of said lamps 8 diffuses light 22 each time (indicated again symbolically in this case, by an arrow).Said light 22 then has illumination parameters 24, namely a determined luminosity H, and a color taking the form of a chromatic location F.

[0047] The lighting device 20 furthermore contains a control unit 26. In said unit 26, a part of the display surface 10 is assigned to each of the lamps 8, as an evaluation zone 28. In [Fig. 2], the mutual assignment is symbolically indicated by a double-headed arrow. In said unit 26, moreover, an imaging prescription 30 is assigned to each of the lamps 8. Said prescription 30 assigns to an image content 12 (to the constituent part thereof), in the respective evaluation zone 28 of the lamp 8 in question, a value of the respective illumination parameters 24 relating to said lamp 8 in question. In the example, therefore, a value assigned to the brightness H and a value assigned to the chromatic location F are assigned to each individual lamp 8. For the sake of clarity, this is only explicitly illustrated for a single lamp.

[0048] The control unit 26 carries out the corresponding mutual assignment, i.e., in the example, it specifies the brightness H and chromatic location F values assigned to each lamp 8, then controls the lamp 8 in question using the corresponding values relating to the brightness H and the chromatic location F.

[0049] The mutual assignment between a lamp 8 and an evaluation zone 28 can be freely defined in the present case. The number, aspect ratio, size and location of the zones 28 can be freely defined. The evaluation algorithm (imaging prescription 30) can be freely defined. In the example, the focal point of the chromatic localization is determined as the value of said chromatic localization F in the evaluation zone 28. The average brightness is specified as the value assigned to the brightness H in said zone 28. The arrangement of the illuminating elements (both of the display surface 10 and of the lamps 8) is independent of the arrangement of the projected images, since a mutual assignment is carried out. The specification of the illumination parameters 24 can be carried out, selectively, in real time or by precalculation. The lighting device 20 can be resized with respect to the projection surfaces, i.e. the display surfaces 10, with respect to the evaluation zones 28 and with respect to the controlled lamps 8.

[0050] In the example, the partial contents 16a-c are generated by a respective light source 32 appearing, in this case, as a projector respectively dedicated to each partial surface 14a-c. For the specification, respectively the acquisition of the image contents 12 (or even the respective constituent parts of the complete image content 12), within the evaluation zones 28, the control unit 26 is provided with an interface 34 with the light sources 32.

[0051] The evaluation zones 28 (respectively their size, their location, etc.), the imaging prescriptions 30 concerning all the lamps 8, as well as the respective mutual assignments of these elements to said lamps 8, are stored in a configuration data bank 36 (evoked by a dotted line frame) of the control unit 26.

[0052] [Fig. 3] again illustrates the lighting device 20 of [Fig. 2], the control unit 26 being omitted for the sake of simplification. In an alternative arrangement, the partial surfaces 14a to 14c are designed as three surfaces of three screens embodying a respective light source 32. In a transposition to [Fig. 1], therefore, three screens are integrated in the panels 4 as light sources whose surfaces form the partial surfaces 14a-c. The partial contents 16a to 16c are the image information reproduced on said screens.

[0053] The “illuminating elements”, in the form of groups of four lamps 8, do not coincide with the partial surfaces 14a-c as is the case in [Fig.2].

[0054] In [Fig. 3], in addition to the twenty-four lamps 8 of the lighting device 20, which are thus installed in modified groups of four, eight additional lamps 8 have been provided which consequently form “overhanging” lighting elements (symbolized by dotted line frames). The latter can be controlled independently of the lamps 8 of the device 20, and therefore independently of the image content 12.

[0055] The objects, elements, parts, articles and blocks represented in the accompanying drawings are referenced as follows in the figures of these drawings: 2: passenger cabin 4: ceiling panels 6: luggage lockers 8: lamps 10: display surface 14a-c: partial surfaces of the display surface 16a-c: partial contents of image content 18: Light environment of the display surface 20: cabin lighting device 22: light 24: Light illumination settings 26: Lighting device control unit 28: evaluation areas assigned to lamps 30: Imaging prescriptions assigned to lamps 32: light sources 34: interface between the control unit and the light sources 36: configuration database H: light brightness F: chromatic localization of light

[0056] It goes without saying that numerous modifications can be made to the lighting device, the passenger cabin and the method described and shown, without departing from the scope of the invention.
