Description

Title of the invention: Compositions and methods for lengthening curly hair Technical field

[0001] The present disclosure relates to compositions comprising gluconolactone and at least one compound selected from amino acids, amino sulfonic acids, their salts or mixtures thereof, and methods of using the compositions to enhance the lengthening of curly hair. CONTEXT

[0002] Curly hair generally appears shorter than its actual length. In the multicultural beauty market, there is a desire for products that can elongate hair curls and give more visual length to the hair. In addition, reducing the curls of very curly hair can increase the manageability and ease of styling of this hair.

[0003] One concern that consumers with curly hair have is that their curly hair appears shorter than its actual length and / or that the curls are not sufficiently defined. In the multicultural beauty market, there is a desire for products that lengthen and / or define curls in order to enhance the natural curl pattern. Existing products on the market that help prevent curl shrinkage often use thick dosage forms with various butters or oils that can leave the hair feeling greasy or oily. Products that provide hold, such as styling gels, can also have lengthening effects, but these products typically flake off the hair. Therefore, the use of these hair lengthening products generally requires frequent washing of the hair, which is particularly undesirable for consumers who have pronounced curls and prefer a limited number of washes per week and who wish to maintain hairstyles that last all day or several days. In addition, traditional hair lengthening, including relaxing or straightening the hair, often involves chemical processing or high heat that can damage the hair fibers and / or irritate the scalp.

[0004] Also, consumers desire new and improved styling compositions that can deliver visible and long-lasting curl extension to the hair and / or provide visible and long-lasting curl definition and hold, particularly in humid conditions, and at the same time impart various additional beneficial properties to the hair such as hydration, softness, smoothness, good bounce, good shine, and / or frizz control.

[0005] It has now been surprisingly discovered that cosmetic compositions comprising gluconolactone and at least one compound selected from amino acids, amino sulfonic acids, their salts or their mixtures, are capable of improving the elongation of hair curls and / or providing definition and hold of curls, particularly in humid conditions, as well as providing other benefits such as hydration, softness, frizz control, and / or manageability to the hair. [0082] In addition, the compositions may also be used to provide the hair with a variety of desirable sensory benefits, for example, hydration, softness, smoothness, bounce, and / or shine. As such, the compositions are useful for styling (including shaping) the hair while caring for, conditioning, and / or imparting to the hair one or more of the sensory benefits described above.

[0083] Typically, the methods according to the disclosure may include applying a effective amount of a composition disclosed herein to hair having curls, when the hair is dry, wet, damp, or moist. As used herein, the term "effective amount" refers to an amount sufficient to provide a desired lengthening effect to the hair, taking into account the degree of curl, length, volume, and texture of the hair. Typically, about 0.5 grams to about 50 grams of product is applied to the hair, depending on the specific formulation of the product, the length of the hair, its volume, and the type of hairstyle. The composition applied to the hair may be distributed evenly by combing it with the fingers or a means such as a comb or the like. The composition may then be dried, for example, by air drying. The composition may be left on the hair as a leave-in product for any period of time necessary, for example, from about a few seconds (e.g. 1, 3, 5 or 10 seconds) to about 10, 20 or 30 minutes, or longer, for example a few hours or a few days, or until the next time the hair is washed or rinsed.

[0084] In some embodiments, before applying the composition to the hair, the hair may first be cleansed with a commercially available shampoo, or rinsed with water. The composition is then applied to the washed or rinsed hair while the hair is wet, damp, or moist. In other embodiments, before applying the composition to dry hair, the hair may optionally be dampened, moistened, or made wet by spraying with water or using a damp towel, or by applying other treatment compositions that make the hair moist, damp, or wet.

[0085] Alternatively, in some embodiments, the compositions of the disclosure may first be applied to dry hair, and then water or cosmetically acceptable compositions are applied to the hair to moisten, dampen, or wet the hair while the compositions of the disclosure remain on the hair. Hair to which the compositions disclosed herein have been applied may be air-dried without further treatment of the hair, including rinsing or washing the hair.

[0086] In some embodiments, the methods may optionally include braiding and / or twisting the hair to make curls, before or after applying the compositions disclosed herein. In some embodiments, the methods according to the disclosure do not require shaping or styling the hair before, during, and / or after applying the compositions. Tensioning the hair is generally not necessary. Also, in some embodiments, before, during, or after applying the compositions, the hair is not stretched by mechanical means.

[0087] In certain embodiments, after applying the compositions described in herein, the hair may be shaped or styled as desired, such as twisted or the like. In some embodiments, hair treated with the compositions may be twisted within 30 minutes, or within 20 minutes, while the hair is wet or damp.

[0088] The methods of the disclosure generally do not require the use of a reducing agent, including a base, or heating the hair to stretch the curls of the hair or lengthen the curls of the hair. Also, in at least some embodiments, the method does not include the use of a reducing agent, or a base, and / or does not require or include a step of heating the hair after applying the composition thereto in order to achieve the desired lengthening results.

[0089] In some embodiments, a composition disclosed herein is used alone to treat hair, without the use of other hair treatment compositions. In other embodiments, the compositions may be applied to the hair before, during, or after applying another hair treatment or styling composition, such as (e.g., a conditioner, mask, cream, lotion, gel, coloring composition, etc.), to the hair. Also, a composition disclosed herein may be applied to the hair and layered over another composition that is also applied to the hair.

[0090] In various embodiments, methods of treating hair with the compositions of the disclosure provide the hair with various long-lasting benefits described above, without greasy feeling or flaking, compared to hair that has not been treated with a composition of the disclosure. The term "long-lasting," as used herein, means that the lengthening effect and other benefits provided to the hair may remain for a desired period of time, such as a few hours, a few days, or until the hair is rinsed or washed.

[0091] Having described in detail the numerous embodiments of the present invention, it will be apparent that modifications and variations are possible without departing from the scope of the disclosure defined in the appended claims. Further, it should be appreciated that all examples of the present disclosure, while illustrating numerous embodiments of the disclosure, are provided by way of non-limiting examples and therefore should not be construed as limiting the various aspects thus illustrated. It is understood that all definitions herein are provided solely for the purposes of the present disclosure.

[0092] In this document, the terms "comprising", "having" and "including" (or "comprise", "have" and "include") are used in their broad and non-limiting sense. The expression "consisting essentially of" limits the scope of a resale dication to the specified materials or steps and to those which do not materially affect the fundamental and innovative characteristics of the compositions.

[0093] In this application, the use of the singular includes the plural, unless otherwise indicated. The singular forms "a", "an", "the", "the", "the" and "at least one" are understood to encompass the plural as well as the singular, unless the context clearly indicates otherwise, and these expressions, as well as the expression "one or more" which means "at least one", are expressly intended to include the individual components as well as mixtures / combinations thereof. Similarly, the expression "a salt thereof" also refers to "salts thereof".Thus, when the disclosure refers to "an element selected from the group consisting of A, B, C, D, E, F, a salt thereof, or mixtures thereof," it indicates that one or more of A, B, C, D, and F may be included, one or more of a salt of A, a salt of B, a salt of C, a salt of D, a salt of E, and a salt of F may be included, or a mixture of any two of A, B, C, D, E, F, a salt of A, a salt of B, a salt of C, a salt of D, a salt of E, and a salt of F may be included.

[0094] In this document, the expressions "and mixtures thereof" "and a mixture thereof," "and combinations thereof" "and a combination thereof," "or mixtures thereof" "or a mixture thereof," "or combinations thereof" and "or a combination thereof," are used interchangeably to indicate that the list of components immediately preceding the expression, such as "A, B, C, D, or mixtures thereof" means that the component(s) may be selected from A, B, C, D, A+B, A+B+C, A+D, A+C+D, etc., without limitation of their variations. Thus, the components may be used individually or in any combination thereof.

[0095] For the purposes of this disclosure, it should be noted that, to provide a more concise description, some of the quantitative expressions given herein are not qualified by the term "about." It is understood that, whether the term "about" is used explicitly or not, each quantity given herein is intended to refer to the given actual value, and it is also intended to refer to the approximation to that given value that would be reasonably deduced based on ordinary skill in the art, including approximations due to experimental and / or measurement conditions of that given value. All ranges and quantities given herein are intended to include sub-ranges and quantities using any disclosed point as a bound. Thus, a range of "1% to 10%, like 2% to 8%, like 3% to 5%" is intended to encompass ranges of "1% to 8%", "1% to 5%", "2% to 10%", and so on. All numbers, quantities, ranges, etc., are intended to be modified by the term "about", whether or not it is expressly stated. Similarly, a given range . of “about 1% to 10%” is intended to have both its 1% and 10% bounds modified by the term “about.” The term “about” is used herein to indicate a difference of up to + / - 10% of the stated number, such as + / - 9%, + / - 8%, + / - 7%, + / - 6%, + / - 5%, + / - 4%, + / - 3%, + / - 2%, or + / - 1%. Similarly, all bounds of the ranges are understood to be individually disclosed, so that, for example, a range of 1:2 to 2:1 is understood to disclose a ratio of both 1:2 and 2:1.

[0096] In this document, if a component is described as being present "in an amount up to" a certain amount, it is understood that this component is, in fact, present in the composition, i.e., it is present in an amount greater than 0%.

[0097] “Active ingredient” as used herein with respect to the percentage of an ingredient or raw material, refers to 100% activity of the ingredient or raw material.

[0098] All quantities stated herein relate to the amount of active ingredient unless otherwise stated.

[0099] All percentages, parts and ratios set forth herein are based on the total weight of the compositions of the present disclosure, unless otherwise indicated.

[0101] As used herein, the term "styling" hair is intended to include "shaping" hair or altering the shape of hair, such as, for example, lengthening hair curls or defining curls.

[0102] As used herein, the term "curly hair" means any hair that includes a curl or wave. The curl may be natural or unnatural, i.e., formed by chemical treatment or physical treatment of the hair. The degree of curliness of the hair may vary and is not limited.

[0103] As used herein, hair having improved or enhanced curl definition may have curls shaped to appear as crisp (ringlet-like) curls rather than being crimped, curls that appear more individualized, curls that have a more closed appearance, and / or curls that have an enhanced visual appearance of hair color and / or highlights.

[0104] As used herein, the terms "lengthening" and "stretching" hair are interchangeable, and both refer to reducing the degree of waviness or frizziness and / or tightening the waviness or curl of the hair, and "Improving the elongation" of hair or hair curl, and their variants, means that the hair length appears closer to the actual, uncurled, length of the hair. Similarly, measuring or assessing the "elongation" of curly hair refers to the length of hair maintained over a period of time, where hair with greater elongation or length retention looks longer over that period.

[0105] A "leave-in" composition or product means a composition such as a hair treatment or styling composition that is not rinsed out and / or washed out with water or an acceptable solvent after applying the composition to the hair; instead, the composition is left on the hair for a desired period of time, e.g., 1 hour, 2 hours, 3 hours, 4 hours, up to 8 hours, overnight, or as long as necessary, until the next washing or rinsing of the hair.

[0106] In this document, the term “inorganic” refers to a material that does not include carbon.

[0107] As used herein, the term "high humidity" refers to conditions of relative humidity of at least 70% or more, such as relative humidity of at least 75% or more, or relative humidity of at least 80% or more.

EXAMPLES

[0116] The following examples are intended to be non-limiting and explanatory in nature only. In the examples, the amounts are expressed as a percentage by weight (% by weight) of active ingredients, relative to the total weight of the composition.

[0117] Example 1-1 - Compositions with glycine and various concentrations of g luco- nolactone

[0118] Compositions 1A-1D of Table 1 were prepared by combining glycine with varying amounts of gluconolactone in water, and the pH was corrected with a small amount of citric acid or trisodium citrate, if necessary, to a pH of about 4.1. A first control (Cl) comprised only water, and a second control (C2) comprised only water with a small amount of trisodium citrate.

[0120] Identical strands of very curly hair were washed with a standard shampoo, rinsed and detangled (Time -1). The strands were soaked in one of the compositions 1A-1D or C1-C5 and excess water was removed by squeezing each strand between the fingers five (5) times, which also served to mechanically stretch the hair (Time 0). The treated strands of hair were allowed to air dry for 18 hours (Time 1). The treated strands were then placed in a humidity chamber at 80% relative humidity at 25°C for 8 hours (Time 2). The strands of hair treated with each of the compositions 1A-1D and C1 were evaluated for elongation (length retention), curl definition and frizz at each of Time 0, Time 1 and Time 2.

[0121] [Fig.lA] shows that, at Time 2, each of the compositions 1A-1D containing glycine and varying amounts of gluconolactone surprisingly provided a significant improvement in length retention of very curly hair, compared to that provided by compositions C1-C5, even after high humidity. [Fig.lB] shows that each of the strands treated with compositions 1A-1D demonstrated significantly better lengthening, curl definition and frizz control than strands treated with compositions C1-C5 at every moment, even when subjected to high humidity.

[0122] Example 1-1 therefore demonstrates that glycine in combination with gluconolactone at various concentrations and ratios surprisingly provides synergistic results beneficial to curly hair, such as lengthening, curl definition and frizz control.

[0123] Example 1-2 - Compositions with glycine and various concentrations of g luco-nolactone

[0124] The study of Example 1-1 was repeated a second time on a second series of strands of very curly hair, with similar results in which compositions 1A-1D provided better elongation, curl definition and frizz control than compositions C1-C5, even when the hair was subjected to high humidity.

[0125] Example 1-2 therefore confirms the results of Example 1-1, namely that glycine combined with gluconolactone in various concentrations and ratios surprisingly provides synergistic results beneficial to curly hair, such as lengthening, curl definition and frizz control.

[0126] Example 2-1 - Compositions with glycine and gluconolactone at variable pH

[0127] The inventive compositions 2A-2D of Table 2A were prepared by combining identical amounts of gluconolactone and glycine with water in the amounts shown, and adding a pH adjuster (citric acid or trisodium citrate) in an amount sufficient to achieve the specified final pH. A control (Cl) consisted of only water.

[0129] Identical locks of very curly hair were washed with a standard shampoo, rinsed and detangled. Equal amounts of inventive compositions 2A-2D or control C1 were applied to separate locks of wet hair and distributed by raking through the curls to ensure even distribution. (Time 0). The treated hair strands were then allowed to air dry for 18 hours, after which the film on the hair was broken by running fingers through each strand from top to bottom three (3) times (Time 1). The treated strands were then placed in a humidity chamber at 80% relative humidity at 25°C for 8 hours (Time 2).

[0130] The hair strands treated with one of the compositions 2A-2D or the control C1 were evaluated in terms of length at Time 1 compared to the length at Time 0, and in terms of length at Time 2 compared to the length at Time 1, in order to determine the length retention of each strand over the period concerned. [Fig.2] shows that each of the compositions 2A-2D offered an improvement in the length retention of very curly hair, compared to the control C1. The results are also shown in Table 2B.

[0132] Example 2-1 demonstrates that compositions comprising gluconolactone and glycine provide beneficial length retention to curly hair over a range of pH values.

[0133] Example 2-2 - Compositions with glycine and gluconolactone at varying pH

[0134] The study of Example 2-1 was repeated a second time on a second series of locks of very curly hair, with similar results, compositions 2A-2D ensuring better length retention than Cl, even when the hair was subjected to high humidity.

[0135] Example 2-2 therefore confirms the results of Example 2-1, namely that glycine combined with gluconolactone at different pH values allows beneficial synergistic preservation of the length of curly hair.

[0136] Example 3-1 - Hair Styling Compositions

[0137] The inventive and comparative hair styling compositions of Table 3 were prepared by combining the components shown with water and a pH adjuster in an amount sufficient to achieve a final pH in the range of about 4.2 to about 5.2.
