Abstract
Description
Title of the invention: FACIAL LIFTING MASK OF NATURAL ORIGIN FIELD OF THE INVENTION
[0001] The invention relates to a two-part composition for application to the skin to form a high-strength, lifting, anti-aging gel mask to be rinsed off.
[0002] CONTEXT OF THE INVENTION.
[0003] Skin produces less collagen and elastin as it ages. For example, after the age of twenty, a person (human) produces about one percent less collagen in the skin each year. As a result, the skin becomes thinner and more fragile. Inevitably, brown spots, redness, wrinkles, crow's feet, age spots, bags under the eyes, and the like may begin to form.
[0004] Consumers often wish to improve the appearance of these age-related skin imperfections, and seek instant and long-lasting results. Many consumer products and procedures are dedicated to concealing and reducing skin flaws and imperfections. Some employ medical procedures while others include makeup, foundations and masks, as well as topical products to provide hydration, such as lotions and creams. Some of these products contain active ingredients, for example nia-cinamide, which help repair and rejuvenate the skin over time, as well as peptides and plant extracts. Unfortunately, these products and procedures have drawbacks. For example, after removal of makeup-type solutions, the skin appears the same as before the makeup was applied.Furthermore, makeup products are often visible, offer minimal textural benefits, and lack long-term, lasting effects on the skin, making them less appealing as a solution to skin aging. Similarly, moisturizers do not address wrinkles and fine lines, at least in the short term. And, of course, many consumers cannot afford or do not prefer to undergo such drastic cosmetic clinical procedures. Furthermore, formulating eco-friendly cosmetic products—products whose design and development take environmental issues into account—is becoming a major concern to help address global challenges. Therefore, it is essential to offer more sustainable compositions and / or preparation processes and / or ingredients to address these environmental challenges. In this context, it is important to develop new cosmetic compositions with a better carbon footprint, in particular by promoting the use of renewable raw materials and / or with a . good index of natural and / or of natural origin and more particularly, of plant origin while reducing the use of compounds of petrochemical origin.
[0005] Attempts have been made to develop new product categories to improve the appearance of the skin without the drawbacks of existing products and procedures. One such product family can generally be categorized as "adhesive contractile film formers." Film formers are chemical compositions that, when applied to the skin, leave a flexible, cohesive, and continuous coating. A select group of film formers are also skin-adherent and contractile. Unfortunately, these film-forming type products, while providing dramatic and instant results, quickly lose their skin-tightening effect, lose elasticity, and may whiten, crack, and peel.Additionally, such products may include harsh ingredients such as peptides and plant extracts that can be irritating, especially when combined with firming agents, and may be difficult to apply to the skin.
[0006] The present disclosure provides an improved skin tightening product that is easy to apply, can be removed with water, does not cause skin irritation and, once removed, provides immediate short-term tightening and longer-term benefits to the skin. BRIEF SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION

[0039] In some embodiments, the composition according to the invention is used on one or more parts of the body or the whole body, the face, the hair and / or the scalp, and separate parts of the body. The cosmetic composition can be used on “normal” skin or skin that is other than normal, and for example, which can be dry or oily. LIFTING SERUM PART Silicate
[0040] In accordance with the disclosure, the cosmetic composition includes at least one silicate.
[0041] In various embodiments, the at least one silicate is selected from the group consisting of sodium silicate, magnesium silicate, calcium silicate, aluminum silicate, and combinations thereof. In some particular embodiments, the silicate is sodium silicate. Examples of silicates that may be obtained commercially include hydrated sodium silicate powders that are water soluble.
[0042] In some embodiments, the at least one silicate comprising sodium silicate may be obtained commercially under the names BRITESIL C 205 (TM) and BRITESIL C207 (TM) from PQ Corporation, and combinations thereof. In some embodiments, the at least one silicate includes BRITESIL C 205.
[0043] In some embodiments, the at least one silicate comprises a sodium silicate. In some embodiments, the sodium silicate is present in a range of about 1% to about 15%, or about 3.3% by weight, based on the weight of the cosmetic composition. In some embodiments, the sodium silicate is represented by the formula Na2O-(SiO2)x, where x is the ratio of silicon dioxide (SiO2) to sodium oxide (Na2O) by weight, wherein the silicon dioxide (SiO2) is present with the sodium oxide (Na2O) at a weight ratio ("x") in a range of about 2.0 to about 3.4, or less than about 2.4.
[0044] In various embodiments, the total amount of silicate present in the cosmetic composition is from about 1% to about 20%, or from about 1% to about 15%, or from about 1% to about 9%, or from about 2% to about 4%, or any suitable combination, subcombination, range or subrange thereof by weight, based on the weight of the cosmetic composition. Non-limiting examples of water-soluble solvents include, for example, glycerin, C1-4 alcohols, organic solvents, fatty alcohols, fatty ethers, fatty esters, polyols, glycols, vegetable oils, mineral oils, liposomes, laminar lipid materials, or any mixtures thereof.Examples of organic solvents that may be mentioned, without limitation, are monoalcohols and polyols such as ethyl alcohol, isopropyl alcohol, propyl alcohol, benzyl alcohol and phenylethyl alcohol, or glycols or glycol ethers such as, for example, monomethyl, monoethyl and monobutyl ethers of ethylene glycol, propylene glycol or associated ethers such as, for example, monomethyl ethers of propylene glycol, butylene glycol, hexylene glycol, dipropylene glycol as well as alkyl ethers of diethylene glycol, for example, monoethyl ether or monobutyl ether of diethylene glycol.
[0050] In some embodiments, the cosmetic composition may be free or essentially free of one or more plasticizers, for example, plasticizers selected from the group consisting of phthalate esters, adipates, citrates, alkane dicarboxylic acids, glycols, and phosphates. Thus, in some examples, the composition may be free of glycerin, propylene glycol, polyethylene glycol, glycerol, sorbitol, dipropylene glycol, propane diol, triethyl citrate, isohexadecane, and combinations thereof.
[0051] When present, the total amount of one or more water-soluble solvents may be from about 0.1% to about 20%, or from about 0.1% to about 15%, or from about 0.1% to about 10%, or from about 0.1% to about 0.5%, including intermediate increments and ranges, based on the total weight of the cosmetic composition.
[0052] In some embodiments, the cosmetic composition includes butylene glycol. In some embodiments, butylene glycol is present in an amount of about 0.3% by weight, based on the weight of the composition. pH of the cosmetic composition
[0053] The pH of the cosmetic composition is between 9 and 11, or between 9.5 and 11, or between 10.2 and 11, or between 10.5 and 11 and in some embodiments, is about 10.8. The pH may be corrected to the desired value by adding a base (organic or inorganic) to the cosmetic composition, for example ammonia or a primary, secondary or tertiary (poly)amine, such as monoethanolamine, diethanolamine, triethanolamine, isopropanolamine or 1,3-propanediamine, or alternatively by adding an inorganic or organic acid, advantageously a carboxylic acid, such as, for example, citric acid.
[0054] As disclosed herein, the pH may also be selected by varying the proportions of the gelling portion comprising the at least one crosslinked polyacrylic acid thickener (in some embodiments carbomer) with the lifting serum portion comprising the silicate (in some embodiments sodium silicate).
[0055] In some examples, embodiments of the composition of the invention may be prepared by mixing the gelling solution portion and the lifting serum portion in varying proportions to provide a composition having a pH in a range of about 9 to about 11, or between 10.5 and 11, or about 10.6 to about 10.8, and in some embodiments, about 10.83, wherein the gelling solution portion and the lifting serum portions are mixed to provide a crosslinked polyacrylic acid to silicate thickener ratio in a range of about 1:1 to 1:13.
[0056] Accordingly, the pH may be in a range of about 9 to about 11, including intermediate 0.01 increments, and in some examples, the pH may be in a range of about 10.50, 10.51, 10.52, 10.53, 10.54, 10.55, etc. to about 10.81, 10.82, 10.83, 10.84, 10.85, etc. to about 11.00.
[0057] Maintaining the pH within the described range is influenced by the relative proportions of thickener comprising polymer and silicate. Given the relatively high pH of the silicate compared to that of the thickener, an imbalance in these ingredients may cause the composition to become cloudy or gummy or unusable. Therefore, the ratio of naturally occurring plant-derived gum thickener (e.g., dehydroxanthan gum with citric acid) to silicate (e.g., sodium silicate) is in the range of about 1:1 to 1:20, including intermediate increments and ranges. In some embodiments, the ratio is in the range of about 1:5 to about 1:18, or about 1:10 to 1:15, or about 1:13.Variously, the ratio may be 1:1, 1:2, 1:3, 1:4, 1:5, 1:6, 1:7, 1:8, 1:9, 1:10, 1:11, 1:12, 1:13, 1:14, 1:15, 1:16, 1:17, 1:18, 1:19 to 1:20, including intermediate increments and ranges, relative to the total weight of the cosmetic composition. [0080] The term "clay" refers to a naturally occurring material composed primarily of fine-grained minerals, which is generally plastic at an appropriate water content and hardens when dried or fired. Although clay usually contains phyllosilicates, it may contain other materials that impart plasticity and harden upon drying or firing. Associated phases in clay may include materials that do not impart plasticity and organic matter. A common definition is from the Penguin Dictionary of Science, namely “finely divided rocky material whose constituent minerals are various silicates, chiefly of magnesium or aluminum.” Clay includes the minerals Kaolinite (usually defined as [SLJAhOio(OH)8.nH2O (n=0 or 4)), Illite (usually defined as MJSie.sAli JAhFe.fHsMg.vsCLo(OH)4), Vermiculite (usually defined as MxfSi7AlJAlFe.05Mg0.5O20 (OH)4), Smectite (usually defined as Mx[Si8]Al3.2Feo.2Mgo.602o (OH)4, Chlorite (usually defined as (A1(OH)2 55)4 [Si6.8A10i.2}Al34Mgo.6)2o(OH)4), and Phylosilicate or talc (usually defined as Mg3Si4Oi0(OH)2).
[0081] Another definition, frequently used by chemists, is "a sediment or sedimentary rock of natural origin composed of one or more minerals and accessory compounds, the whole usually being rich in hydrated aluminum silicate, iron or magnesium, hydrated alumina, or iron oxide, having particles mainly of colloidal or quasi-colloidal size, and commonly developing plasticity when sufficiently pulverized and wetted" (see Kirk-Othmer, Encyclopaedia of Chemical Technology, Volume 5, page 544, 2nd edition, John Wiley and Sons, Inc., New York, 1964). Examples of clays are given in the book "Clay mineralogy, S” Caillere, S. Hénin, M. Rautureau, 2nd edition 1982, Masson". Clays can be of natural or synthetic origin.
[0082] Hydrophilic clay includes smectites such as saponites, hectorites, montmorillonites, bentonites and beidellite. Hydrophilic clay includes synthetic hectorites (also known as laponites) such as the products sold by the company under the name Laporte Laponite XLG, Laponite RD, Laponite RDS (these products are sodium silicates and magnesium silicates, particularly sodium, lithium and magnesium), bentonites such as the product sold under the name Bentone® HC Rheox, magnesium silicates and products based on aluminum silicates such as the hydrated products sold by the Vanderbilt Company under the name Ultra Veegum®, Veegum® HS, Veegum® DGT, or calcium silicates, and in particular the synthetic form sold by the company under the name Micro-cel® C. Fuller's earth consists primarily of hydrated aluminum silicates that contain within their structure metal ions such as magnesium, sodium, and calcium. Montmorillonite is the primary clay mineral in Fuller's earth, but it may contain other minerals such as kaolinite, attapulgite, and palygorskite, among other components.
[0083] A lipophilic clay refers to a swellable clay in a lipophilic medium, the clay swells and forms a colloidal dispersion. Lipophilic clays include modified clays such as modified magnesium silicate hectorites (Bentone VS38 gel from Rheox) modified with a C10 to C22 ammonium chloride fatty acid, such as hectorite modified with distearyldimethylammonium chloride (CTFA name: Disteardimonium hectorite) sold under the name “Bentone 38 CE” by Rheox or Bentone® 38V by ELEMENTIS.
[0084] The origin of such clay may be a natural or synthetic mineral clay, such as hectorite, bentonite and their quaternized derivatives, for example obtained by reacting the minerals with a quaternary ammonium compound, such as stearalkonium bentonite, hectorites, quaternized hectorites such as Quatemium-18 hectorite, carbonates such as propylene carbonate, bentones, and the like.
[0085] Non-limiting examples of clay that may be used in the present invention are fuller's earth, volcanic ash mud from Pinatubo in the Philippines, Aleppo clay from Syria, Pulau tiga volcanic mud from Malaysia, Nha Trang mud from Vietnam, white kaolinite from Korea, yellow loess from Korea, Jeju volcanic clay from Korea, Guanziling mud from Taiwan, Wudalianchi volcanic mud from China, Yuncheng salt lake black mud from China, Tantou village mineral mud from China, porcelain earth (kaolin), Maifan stone from China, Beppu onsen Fango from Japan, Kucha from Japan, Tanakura clay from Japan, Cambrian blue clay from Russia, Blue Lagoon mud from Iceland, Saki lake mud from Ukraine, Karlovy Vary moor mud from the Czech Republic, Heviz moor mud Georgikon from Hungary, moor mud from the Austrian Alps, Bad Wilsnack mud from Germany,Bavarian mineral salt mountain mud from Germany, Freiburg volcanic ash from Germany, Santorini mud from Greece, Mar Menor mud from Spain, Ischia volcanic mud from Italy, Euganean thermal mud from Italy, Yellow illite clay from France, French green clay - Montmorillonite, Calistoga mud from the USA, Sacred clay and Formalite from the USA, Redmond clay from the USA, , Arctic Mineral Mud from Canada, Tulum Mayan Clay from Mexico, Glacial Clay from Canada, Amazonian White Clay from Brazil, El Chillante Volcanic Thermal Mud from Argentina, African Healing Clay, and Australian Olive Green Clay. PACKAGING
[0099] In various embodiments, the cosmetic composition is provided as a manufactured product in which the ingredients are divided into at least two parts, such that the gelling solution which includes the naturally occurring plant-derived gum thickener (e.g., dehydroxanthan gum), the clay comprising hectorite, the glycosaminoglycan, and all actives is kept separate from the lifting serum which includes the silicate and water.
[0100] It will be appreciated that the cosmetic composition is packaged in a manufactured product that separately contains each of the gelling solution portion and the lifting serum portion. In some embodiments, the manufactured product includes each of the separately packaged portions having concentrations of the thickener and the silicate, respectively, that provide a crosslinked polyacrylic acid to silicate thickener ratio in a range of about 1:1 to 1:20, such that upon mixing thereof, the resulting composition has a predetermined pH in a range of about 9 to about 11, or between 10.5 and 11, or about 10.6 to about 10.8, and in some embodiments, about 10.83, wherein the pH is determined at least in part by the proportions of the thickener and the silicate.Varying the amounts of mixed parts provides a mask of varying thickness and spreadability, ranging from thinner and runny at higher pH in the range of about 9 to 11 (greater amount of silicate in the range of 1:1 to 1:20) to thicker and firmer at lower pH in the range of about 9 to 11 (greater amount of thickener in the range of 1:1 to 1:20).
[0101] In one embodiment, the package may be in the form of a multi-use product in which each of the two parts is provided separately where the container for at least one part is sized to receive the entirety of the other part contained, such that the parts may be mixed by the consumer and used over time until the mixture is exhausted.
[0102] In another embodiment, the packaging may be in the form of a single-use product in which the two parts provided in separate containers or chambers, and the separately contained parts of a pack are mixed by the consumer and used for a single or limited number of applications. Such embodiment may be a dual-chamber pouch having separately insulated segments with an internal frangible thermoformed seal between them that may be ruptured to mix the two parts in the pouch prior to application. Alternatively, this embodiment may be a dual-chamber case with adjacent segments, wherein the segments of the case are each torn open and their contents are mixed in another container or on a substrate surface prior to application, or the two parts are mixed on the skin surface.Alternatively, this embodiment may be made as a single-chambered case containing one part and a separate bottle, tube or ampoule containing the other part where the case segment is torn and the separate bottle, tube or ampoule is broken and their contents are mixed in the case, another container or on a substrate surface before application, or the two parts are mixed on the skin surface. Alternatively, this embodiment may be made as a single-chambered jar, sachet or housing containing one part and a separate bottle, tube, applicator with a storage compartment or ampoule containing the other part where the jar, sachet or housing is opened and the contents of the separate bottle, tube, applicator with a storage compartment or ampoule are added and mixed in the single-chambered jar, sachet or housing, before application.

[0105] In use, the manufactured product comprising at least two partitioned containers is provided for use by a consumer, whereby the consumer opens the containers, mixes the component parts, applies the composition to the skin and holds it in place for a time sufficient to allow gelling and tensioning of the mask composition, for example, for an interval of about 30 minutes, or more generally in a range of about 10 minutes to about 45 minutes.
[0106] Application to the skin may be accomplished using fingers, an applicator pad, or a brush.
[0107] The manufactured products providing the composition may thus include partitioned containers for the first part and the second part comprising, respect- tively, the lifting serum and the gelling solution, and one or more applicators.
[0108] Accordingly, the component parts of the composition are mixed, for example, for about 10 to 30 seconds; the mixture is applied to the skin for a period of about ten to about 45 minutes; the skin is rinsed with warm water without using any cleanser. After removal of the mask, the skin may be further treated with a moisturizer and / or makeup composition, a UV protectant, or other compositions may be applied.
[0109] Used according to the disclosure, the composition can be easily applied to form a gel mask that provides immediate firming of the skin, and upon removal of the mask, the clay (e.g., hectorite) is retained to gently smooth and blur fine lines and wrinkles, with the effect imparted by the mask providing increased hydration of the skin, and the benefits of the included actives, such as reducing redness with caffeine and hydrating and plumping with hyaluronic acid / sodium hyaluronate. The term "comprising" is intended to be inclusive or broad and does not exclude any additional, unmentioned element, process, step or material. The term "consisting of" excludes any element, step or material other than those specified in the claims and, in the latter case, impurities ordinarily associated with the specified material(s). The phrase "consisting essentially of" limits the scope of a claim to the specified elements, steps or material(s) and to those which do not materially affect the fundamental and novel feature(s) of the claimed invention. All methods and materials described herein that incorporate the present invention may, in alternative embodiments, be more specifically defined by any of the transitional terms "comprising", "consisting essentially of", and "consisting of".
[0135] In addition to the working examples, or unless otherwise indicated, all numbers expressing amounts of ingredients and / or reaction conditions may be modified in all cases by the term "about", meaning to within 10% of the number indicated (e.g., "about 10%" means 9% to 11% and "about 2%" means 1.8% to 2.2%).
[0136] All percentages and ratios are calculated by weight unless otherwise indicated. All percentages are calculated based on the total composition unless otherwise indicated. In general, unless expressly stated herein, “weight” or “amount” as used herein with respect to the percentage amount of an ingredient refers to the amount of raw material comprising the ingredient, where the raw material may be described herein as comprising less than and up to 100% of the ingredient’s activity. Accordingly, the weight percentage of an active ingredient in a composition is represented as the amount of raw material containing the active ingredient that is used and may or may not reflect the final percentage of the active ingredient, where the final percentage of the active ingredient depends on the weight percentage of the active ingredient in the raw material.
[0137] All ranges and amounts set forth herein are intended to include subranges and amounts using any disclosed point as a bound. Thus, a range of "1% to 10%, such as 2% to 8%, such as 3% to 5%" is intended to encompass ranges of "1% to 8%," "1% to 5%," "2% to 10%," and so on. All numbers, amounts, ranges, etc. are intended to be modified by the term "about," whether or not expressly stated. Similarly, a given range of "about 1% to 10%" is intended to have both its 1% and 10% bounds modified by the term "about." Furthermore, it is understood that when an amount of a component is given, it is intended to refer to the amount of active ingredient unless specifically stated otherwise.
[0138] Although the numerical ranges and parameters within the general scope of the disclosure are approximations, unless otherwise indicated, the numerical values presented in the specific examples are reported as accurately as possible. However, any numerical value inherently contains certain errors necessarily resulting from the standard deviation observed in their respective test measurements. The following example serves to illustrate embodiments of the present disclosure without, however, being limiting in nature.
[0139] Although a number of exemplary aspects and embodiments have been discussed above, those skilled in the art will recognize certain modifications, permutations, additions, and subcombinations thereof, and it will be understood by those skilled in the art that various changes may be made, and equivalents may be substituted for elements thereof, without departing from the scope of the invention. In addition, numerous modifications may be made to adapt a particular situation or subject matter to the teachings of the invention without departing from the essential scope thereof. It is therefore intended that the invention is not limited to the particular embodiments disclosed herein and that the following appended claims and re claims hereinafter set forth shall be construed to include all such modifications, permutations, additions and subcombinations as they fall within their true spirit and scope.
