Abstract
Description
Title of the invention: NEW ANTI-DANDRUFF COMPOSITIONS
[0001] The present invention relates to a new cosmetic or dermatological composition for combating dandruff.
[0002] Dandruff affects one in two people in France, its presence is benign, but it gives an unsightly appearance.
[0003] The scalp, like all skin, normally renews itself by shedding superficial epidermal cells. Dandruff consists of skin flakes, but unusually large, thicker, or more numerous than normal cells. Dandruff is classified as either dry or oily.
[0004] Dry dandruff is white, flat, and flakes off spontaneously. It is often accompanied by itching and is generally associated with a dry scalp.
[0005] Oily dandruff is smaller, round, yellowish, and greasy. It adheres to the scalp and hair. It is also accompanied by itching. Generally, it is a consequence of seborrhea and is often associated with an oily scalp and hair.
[0006] There are two dandruff conditions depending on the severity: - light dandruff consists of small whitish flakes corresponding to clumps of very volatile dead cells that fall from the scalp; - Seborrheic dermatitis involves dandruff associated with inflammation of the scalp, causing redness and itching.
[0007] The scalp epidermis is covered with a lipid film called sebum, the role of which is, among other things, to protect it from drying out. Malassezia is the name of a yeast belonging to the Fungi imperfecti group and is part of the commensal flora of humans. Several species are distinguished: M. furfur, M. sympodialis, M. globosa, M. restricta, and M. obtusa. Malassezia are lipophilic and keratinophilic yeasts; they are lipid-dependent. It is established that this fungus is a weak pathogen for humans. M. furfur is present in virtually the entire population. However, it is also established that M. furfur is responsible for dermatoses such as seborrheic dermatitis in approximately 3% of the population. Malassezia develops easily in oily environments, such as the scalp, where sebum is secreted in particularly high quantities, thus creating a favorable environment for its growth.
[0008] Not everyone secretes the same amount of sebum. Some people secrete a sufficient amount to promote the overgrowth of Malassezia and thus the formation of dandruff. Furthermore, the amount of sebum varies over time, particularly depending on hormonal secretions. Finally, other factors can contribute to the appearance of dandruff, such as stress, fatigue, pollution, lack of sunlight, certain illnesses, and certain medications, such as neuroleptics, etc.
[0009] Dandruff often appears during adolescence when sebum secretion begins. Men seem to be more frequently affected than women, probably due to the influence of androgen hormones.
[0010] Anti-dandruff compositions, particularly in the form of shampoos, have been known and commercially available for many years. They generally contain chemical active ingredients such as ketoconazole, zinc pyrithione, octopirox, ciclopirox olamine, salicylic acid, selenium sulfide, and azelaic acid. Some compounds, such as zinc pyrithione, are suspected of causing environmental problems, particularly ecotoxicity. It is therefore important to find new active ingredient compositions that are more environmentally friendly. Furthermore, speed of action is a major criterion for the consumer.
[0011] Furthermore, in recent years, consumers have become increasingly vigilant regarding the composition of the products they buy. A growing number of ingredients are being questioned, sometimes controversially, fueled by both mainstream and alternative media. It is therefore important to have streamlined formulas with, if possible, a limited number of ingredients; the challenge being to minimize the number of active ingredients in the formula while maintaining maximum efficacy.
[0012] There is therefore still a need for new dermo-cosmetic products to effectively combat dandruff and / or to prevent its formation.
[0013] Surprisingly, the inventors discovered that a particular combination of ingredients, including an anti-dandruff agent, Piroctone Olamine, and without zinc pyrithione or ciclopiroxolamine, exhibited very interesting fungicidal activity against Malassezia, and after only 5 minutes of application, which is a very important advantage compared to other anti-dandruff compositions tested.
[0014] According to a first aspect, the present invention proposes a cosmetic or dermatological composition, particularly suitable for topical application, especially on the skin (scalp) and hair. This composition comprises: - at least 35% by weight of water, relative to the total weight of the composition; - at least 20% by weight of at least one polyol, relative to the total weight of the composition; - at least one anionic surfactant selected from acyl glutamic acids and their cosmetically or dermatologically acceptable salts, sodium lauryl sarcosinate and disodium cocoglucoside citrate, and mixtures thereof; and - at least one non-ionic surfactant chosen from among the alkyl glucosides in which the alkyl radical preferentially comprises 8 to 16 carbon atoms; - at least one anti-dandruff agent which is piroctone olamine, the cosmetic or dermatological composition being free of ciclopiroxolamine and zinc pyrithione.

[0070] It is further distinguished between formulated products that can be rinsed and formulated products that do not require rinsing; rinsed products being more particularly suitable in the context of the present invention.
[0071] The absence of controversial agents in the cosmetic or dermatological composition according to the invention makes it possible to obtain compositions that are very well tolerated. To treat a scalp irritated by itching, it is important to choose hair care products that do not irritate the epidermis. Thus, silicone-free and sulfate-free compositions better respect the scalp's balance.
[0072] The compositions according to the invention are particularly interesting in the prevention and treatment of seborrheic dermatitis and / or for combating dandruff and / or preventing its formation, thanks to their immediate and lasting effectiveness.
[0073] The present invention also relates to the use, preferably topical, of a cosmetic or dermatological composition as defined above for the prevention and / or treatment of seborrheic dermatitis and / or to combat dandruff and / or prevent its formation.
[0074] Another object of the invention is a method of treatment and / or prevention of seborrheic dermatitis, comprising the administration, in particular by topical application to the scalp, of a composition according to the invention, as described above.
[0075] The present invention also relates to a non-therapeutic cosmetic treatment method for combating dandruff and / or preventing its formation, comprising the administration, particularly by topical application to the hair and / or scalp, of a cosmetic or dermatological composition according to the invention, as defined above. This composition preferably comprises a cosmetically or dermatologically acceptable excipient, more particularly acceptable for topical application.
[0076] The present invention also relates to a method for obtaining anti-dandruff efficacy on hair or scalp comprising the steps of: (i) wetting the hair with water; (ii) applying an effective amount of an anti-dandruff composition according to the present invention as described above to the hair; (iii) rinsing the anti-dandruff composition from the hair with water; and (iv) optionally repeating steps (ii) and (iii).
[0077] According to another aspect, the invention further relates to a method for achieving anti-seborrheic efficacy on the skin, comprising the steps of: (i) optionally wetting the skin with water; (ii) applying an effective amount of an anti-seborrheic composition according to the present invention as described above; (iii) rinse the anti-seborrheic composition from the skin with water; (iv) optionally repeat steps (ii) and (iii).
[0078] According to another aspect, the invention relates to the use of piroctone olamine as the sole anti-dandruff active agent in a cosmetic or dermatological composition according to the invention, as described above, particularly suitable for topical administration.
[0079] Thus, according to another aspect, the invention relates in particular to piroctone olamine, for its use as the sole anti-dandruff active agent, in a cosmetic or dermatological composition, in particular for topical administration, said composition comprising: - at least 35% by weight of water, relative to the total weight of the composition; - at least 20% by weight of at least one polyol, relative to the total weight of the composition; - at least one anionic surfactant selected from acyl glutamic acids and their cosmetically acceptable salts, sodium lauryl sarcosinate, disodium cocoglucoside citrate, and mixtures thereof; and - at least one non-ionic surfactant chosen from among the alkyl glucosides in which the alkyl radical comprises 8 to 16 carbon atoms; and allowing a 90% reduction in load after 5 minutes of contact with a population of Malas sezia furfur.
[0080] This use may correspond, with regard to the characteristics of the composition, to one or more of the above characteristics with reference to the cosmetic or dermatological composition according to the invention.
[0081] The features and advantages of the invention will become more apparent in the light of the following implementation example, provided by way of illustration only and in no way limiting the invention.

[0097] Table 2 - Fungicidal activity against Malassezia furfur of the compositions
[0098] Comparative anti-dandruff compositions 1 and 2 induce a marked reduction in the number of microorganisms after 15 and 60 minutes of contact.
[0099] As expected, composition 3, which is bacteriostatic, does not induce a significant decrease in the number of microorganisms, the quantity of these microorganisms remaining stable throughout the study.
[0100] On the other hand, the composition according to the invention is the only one which acts effectively from 5 minutes of contact, indeed, only 10% of microorganisms are still present.
[0101] The composition according to the invention therefore presents a definite advantage, compared to the other compositions tested.
[0102] It is interesting to note that the comparative compositions contain less polyol than the composition according to the invention, and do not have the same surfactants (presence of amphoteric surfactants for all 3 compositions).
[0103] Thus, the inventors have developed an anti-dandruff composition, with immediate action with only one anti-dandruff agent and a relatively simple formula.
