Description

Title of the invention: NATURAL HAIR STYLING COMPOSITION AND HAIR STYLING METHODS SCOPE OF DISCLOSURE

[0001] This disclosure relates to styling compositions made with key ingredients that are natural. Styling compositions are particularly useful in hair styling processes, including processes for long-lasting hair shaping, improving style, hold and evenness, adding shine and controlling frizz. CONTEXT

[0002] Consumers today are increasingly seeking hair products that not only offer effective styling benefits but are also formulated with key natural ingredients, such as thickeners, fixatives, humectants, and the like. There is a growing trend toward formulations that use natural, plant-based, and sustainable ingredients, driven by concerns about environmental impact and personal health. This shift reflects a broader desire to move away from synthetic and petrochemical ingredients, which are perceived as less environmentally friendly and potentially harmful.

[0003] Styling products vary considerably in form and function and include mousses, gels, creams, waxes, sprays, serums, and aerosols. Each formulation addresses different styling needs and hair types, offering varying levels of benefit depending on the specific composition and application method. However, traditional styling products often suffer from drawbacks such as stickiness during application and a stiff or crunchy feeling after drying, which many consumers consider undesirable.

[0004] Current advances in hair product formulations frequently incorporate water-soluble film-forming polymers into styling products, many of which are synthetic polymers. These polymers exhibit various characteristics depending on their chemical composition; some are intrinsically water-soluble, while others are modified by processes such as neutralization to achieve water solubility. When applied, these polymers form a film on the hair surface that can provide hold for styling. However, as the solvent evaporates after With application, the concentration of polymers increases, potentially leading to the formation of a film that forms residues on the hair and / or flakes of it.

[0005] The formulation of environmentally friendly cosmetic products, designed and developed with environmental considerations in mind, is becoming a major objective in an effort to address global challenges. It is therefore essential to offer more sustainable compositions, preparation processes, and ingredients to meet these environmental concerns. In this context, it is important to develop new cosmetic compositions with a lower carbon footprint, particularly by promoting the use of renewable raw materials and / or materials with a high naturalness index and / or materials of natural origin, and more specifically, materials of plant origin, while reducing the use of petrochemical-derived compounds.

[0006] The constantly evolving landscape of hair care products reflects a growing demand for sustainable products that combine effective styling properties with natural ingredients. These ingredients not only offer functional benefits such as style hold and moisture retention, but they also appeal to consumers seeking gentler and more environmentally friendly alternatives. Given the above, there remains a need for styling compositions that harness the benefits of natural ingredients while delivering superior styling performance. DISCLOSURE SUMMARY

[0007] This disclosure relates to styling compositions, in particular styling compositions that are unique in their ability to impart a variety of desirable properties to hair without relying on synthetic ingredients. Non-limiting examples of fatty compounds include fatty acids, fatty alcohols, triglycerides, phospholipids, steroids, waxes, oils, glycerides, sphinoglipids, isosanoids, alkylglycerols, polyketides, fatty acid amides, and ether lipids. Processes

[0050] Another aspect of the invention relates to methods for styling hair using the styling compositions described herein. The methods generally include applying the described styling compositions to the hair. The styling compositions can be useful in a variety of contexts, and for both chemically treated and untreated hair. Use on treated hair can include chemically straightened / relaxed hair or chemically dyed, bleached, or lightened / highlighted hair. The hair to which the styling composition is applied can be wet or damp, or it can be dry. In a preferred embodiment, the styling composition is applied to wet or damp hair. In another preferred embodiment, the styling composition is applied to dry hair.

[0051] Styling compositions are typically used as "leave-in" styling products, meaning that the styling composition is applied to the hair and left on the hair without rinsing or washing the hair after application. For example, the styling composition can be applied to wet or damp hair and left to dry. The hair can dry naturally or be dried using drying tools, such as a hairdryer. Furthermore, the styling composition can be applied to the hair (wet, damp, or dry) and the hair can be manipulated to achieve a desired shape or style, for example, using fingers, combs, or other styling tools. The styling compositions are not rinsed or washed from the hair before the hair is manipulated to achieve the desired shape or style. The styling composition is also not rinsed or washed out of the hair after handling the hair to give it the desired shape or style, but rather remains on the shaped / styled hair where it continues to hold / maintain the desired shape / style for an extended period (e.g., throughout the day or until the hair is again cleaned according to the person's regular cleansing and styling routine).

[0052] In various embodiments, the styling composition is applied to the hair immediately or shortly after the hair has been washed with shampoo and optionally the hair has been conditioned with conditioner. Methods of implementation

[0071] The hair styling compositions presented above are preferably free or essentially free of synthetic polymers.

[0072] The hair styling compositions presented above are preferably free or essentially free of anionic surfactants, cationic surfactants, amphoteric surfactants, non-ionic surfactants or combinations thereof.

[0073] The styling compositions presented above are preferably free of cationic revitalizing polymers, whether the cationic revitalizing polymers are synthetic or of natural origin (for example, hydroxypropyltrimonium guar chloride).

[0074] The hair styling compositions presented above are preferably free of silicones, including amino-functionalized silicones.

[0075] The hair styling compositions described above are preferably free or substantially free of waxes. Non-limiting examples of waxes that may be excluded include beeswax, carnauba wax, candelilla wax, jojoba wax, microcrystalline wax, paraffin wax, ozokerite wax, rice bran wax, sunflower wax, soy wax, shellac wax, Montan wax, lanolin wax, castor wax, berry wax, polyethylene wax, polyglyceryl esters, spermaceti wax, Japanese wax, orange wax, and wax of palm, stearyl wax, polyethylene glycol (PEG) wax, polyglyceryl-3 beeswax, hydrogenated castor oil, ethylene glycol distearate, olive wax, mimosa wax, myrica wax and silica silylate.

[0076] The hair styling compositions described above are preferably free or essentially free of fatty compounds. Fatty compounds are a diverse group of organic molecules characterized by their insolubility in water (hydrophobic nature) and their solubility in nonpolar solvents. Non-limiting examples of fatty compounds include fatty acids, fatty alcohols, triglycerides, phospholipids, steroids, waxes, oils, glycerides, sphinoglipids, isosanoids, alkylglycerols, polyketides, fatty acid amides, etheric lipids, or combinations thereof. EXAMPLES

[0077] Various changes can be made to the above compositions and processes without departing from the scope of the invention. Accordingly, it is intended that all disclosure in the above description and in the examples given below shall be interpreted in an illustrative and not limiting manner. Example 1 Inventive hairstyling compositions

[0078] [Tables] ABCDE (a) Carrageenan CARRAGHENANE O 4ZS 0.75 (b) Guoomannane G LUCOMANNANE Ô.75 0.76 0.75 0.75 O (c) Natural fiimogenic polymer PULLULANE 1 0.5 6.5 1 ACACIA GUM SENEGAL 0.01 (d) Sugar alcohol SORBITOL 4 7.5 4 7.5 7.5 Glyççl PROPANEDIOL (PRO ANE'1 > DIOO 2 ,S 2.5 2.5 2.5 2.5 (g) Miscellaneous PRESERVATIVE.

[0079] The compositions were prepared by first premixing carrageenan, glucomannan, pullulan, and propanediol. Sorbitol was dissolved in water, and the premix of carrageenan, glucomannan, pullulan, and propanediol was combined with the water / sorbitol solution. The additional ingredients were added, and the composition was mixed to obtain a solubilized and homogeneous gel.

[0080] Polysaccharides other than carrageenan have been investigated, but have not provided satisfactory results. For example, alginate was used instead of carrageenan in a 1:1 ratio with glucomannan. However, alginate had a negative impact on the pH. Xanthan gum was used instead of carrageenan in a 1:1 ratio with glucomannan. However, xanthan gum did not provide sufficient viscosity. Therefore, the amount of xanthan gum was increased to a 4:1 ratio (xanthan gum:glucomannan), and a clumping gel that lacked transparency was formed. Pectin was used instead of carrageenan in a 1:1 ratio with glucomannan. However, pectin was difficult to disperse. Example 2 Comparative tests

[0081] The inventive composition B of Example 1 was compared to a popular commercial reference product known for its desirable styling qualities. The commercial reference product contains the following ingredients:

[0082] Water, propylene glycol, sorbitol, ammonium polyacryldimethyltauramide, VP / acrylates / lauryl methacrylate copolymer, Peg-40 hydrogenated castor oil, magnesium gluconate, triethanolamine, chlorphenesin, calcium gluconate, limonene, pentasodium pentetate, benzyl salicylate, benzyl alcohol, linalool, methylparaben, butylphenyl methylpropional, parfum.

[0083] The reference commercial product, unlike the inventive composition B, contains synthetic polymers.

[0084] A volunteer's hair was washed with a standard shampoo and towel-dried. Half of the volunteer's hair was treated with the commercial reference product, and the other half was treated with inventive composition B. Equal amounts of both compositions (approximately 2-3 grams) were applied to the hair, distributed evenly throughout, and the hair was styled with the fingers. An expert evaluator assessed the hair for a variety of cosmetic attributes immediately after styling, 3 to 4 hours after styling, and after washing out the compositions. The hair treated with inventive composition B was compared to the hair treated with the commercial reference product as follows:

[0085] < Indicates that the inventive composition B was not as effective as the commercial reference product

[0086] = Indicates that the inventive composition B had performance equivalent to commercial reference product

[0087] > Indicates that the inventive composition B has achieved better performance than the commercial reference product

[0088] The results are presented in the table below.

[0089] [Tables2] Immediately after styling: Distribution = Ease of finger movement = Ease of styling / shaping > Sticky texture < Ease of removal from hands > Shine = Wet look = Thick strands / clumping > Firmness = Coating = After 3 to 4 hours: Shine = Wet look = Thick strands / clumping = Firmness > Styling hold > Shape = Residue < After washing: Clean feeling after washing >

[0090] The results show that, although formulated with natural ingredients, the inventive composition B achieved performance equal to or superior to the commercial reference product in almost all the attributes tested. For example, it was easier to style hair with the inventive composition B. Furthermore, the inventive composition was more easily rinsed from the hands. Hair treated with the inventive composition B exhibited fewer thick strands and less clumping than hair treated with the comparative reference product. The “ Thick strands or clumps" refer to strands of hair that have become stuck together, which is undesirable.

[0091] After 3 to 5 hours, the hair treated with the inventive composition B was firmer and held its style better. Finally, after washing the hair, the hair treated with the inventive composition B felt "cleaner".

[0092] It was surprising to find that the inventive composition B, which contains natural ingredients, provided performance equivalent to or better than the commercial reference product containing synthetic polymers, which are known for their excellent styling attributes. It is known that natural ingredients generally do not perform as well as synthetic ingredients in styling compositions. This is because synthetic ingredients are designed to provide the desired attributes. The number of different synthetic ingredients is unlimited. In contrast, the number of natural ingredients is limited. If natural ingredients are chemically modified to obtain a desired property, the modified ingredient is no longer natural.

[0093] The preceding disclosure illustrates and describes embodiments of the invention. The disclosure shows and describes only preferred embodiments, but it is understood that the invention is usable in various other combinations, modifications, and environments, and that it may undergo changes or modifications in the scope of the inventive concepts expressed herein, depending on the teachings above and / or the skills or knowledge of the relevant art. The embodiments described above are further intended to explain the best known embodiments of the applicant and to enable others skilled in the art to use the disclosure. This description is not intended to limit the invention.

[0094] As used herein, the terms "comprising," "having," and "including" (or "comprise," "having," and "include") are used in their broad, non-limiting sense. The expression "consisting essentially of" restricts the scope of a claim to the specified materials or steps and to those that do not materially affect the basic and innovative features of the claimed invention.

[0095] The terms "a", "an", "the" and "the" are understood to encompass both the plural and the singular.

[0096] Thus, the expression "one of their mixtures" or "one of their combinations" also refers to "their mixtures" or "their combinations." Throughout the disclosure, the expression "one of their combinations" may be used following a list of items, as shown in the following example where the letters A to F represent the items: "one or more items selected from the group of A, B, C, D, E, F, or one of their combinations." The expression "their combination" does not require that the combination include all of the elements A, B, C, D, E, and F (although all of the elements A, B, C, D, E, and F could be included). Rather, it indicates that a combination of any two or more of the elements A, B, C, D, E, and F can be included. In other words, it is equivalent to the formulation "one or more elements chosen from A, B, C, D, E, F, and a combination of two or more of A, B, C, D, E, and F."

[0097] Similarly, the expression "one of its (their) salts" also refers to "its (their) salts." Thus, when the disclosure refers to "an element chosen from the group consisting of A, B, C, D, E, F, one of their salts, and one of their combinations," it indicates that one or more of A, B, C, D, and F may be included, that one or more of a salt of A, a salt of B, a salt of C, a salt of D, a salt of E, and a salt of F may be included, or that a mixture of any two of A, B, C, D, E, F, a salt of A, a salt of B, a salt of C, a salt of D, a salt of E, and a salt of F may be included.

[0098] The surfactants referred to throughout this disclosure may include those having a counterion such as an alkali metal, alkaline earth metal, or ammonium counterion. This list of counterions, however, is not exhaustive. Regardless of whether the possibility of a salt for a particular component is mentioned, both the salt and the unsalted form of the component are included, unless otherwise specified.

[0099] The expression "one or more" means "at least one" and therefore includes individual components as well as mixtures / combinations.

[0100] The term “plurality” means “more than one” or “two or more”.

[0101] Except in operational examples, or unless otherwise indicated, all numbers In all cases, quantities of ingredients and / or reaction conditions can be modified by the term "approximately," meaning within + / - 10% of the stated quantity. For example, a quantity of "approximately 1 by weight" can include a quantity as low as 0.90% by weight or as high as 1.1. Similarly, a quantity of "approximately 50" can include a quantity as low as 45% by weight and as high as 55% by weight.

[0102] Some of the various categories of ingredients identified for the styling composition may have dual function. In cases where dual function may exist and the styling composition includes two (or more than two) dual components, a dual component shall not represent more than one claimed component. For example, menthol is known in the art to be both a "cooling agent" and a "terpene." If a claimed composition refers to both a cooling agent and a terpene, menthol may serve solely as a cooling agent or solely as a terpene. of terpene. Menthol cannot simultaneously serve as a cooling agent and a terpene.

[0103] All percentages, parts and ratios herein are based on the total weight of the compositions, unless otherwise stated.

[0104] All ranges and values disclosed herein are inclusive and combinable. For example, any value or point described herein that falls within a range described herein can serve as a minimum or maximum value for deducing a subrange, and so on. Furthermore, all ranges provided are intended to include each specific range within the given ranges, and a combination of intermediate subranges of the given ranges. Thus, a range of 1 to 5 specifically includes 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5, as well as subranges such as 2 to 5, 3 to 5, 2 to 3, 2 to 4, 1 to 4, and so on.

[0105] A "rinse-off" product refers to a composition that is removed by rinsing and / or washing the hair with water after or during the application of the composition to the hair, and before drying and / or styling the hair. At least a portion of the composition is removed from the hair during rinsing and / or washing.

[0106] A "leave-in" product refers to a composition that is not removed by rinsing and / or washing the hair after or during the application of the composition to the hair. The composition remains on the hair during drying and / or throughout styling.

[0107] All components positively presented in this disclosure may be negatively excluded from the claims and the compositions and processes described throughout this disclosure. In other words, the compositions of this disclosure may be free or substantially free of one or more of the components positively presented in this disclosure for possible inclusion in the compositions.

[0108] The expression "substantially free" or "essentially free" as used herein means that the specific material may be present in small quantities that do not materially affect the basic and innovative features of the claimed invention. For example, less than 1% by weight of a specific material may be added to a composition, relative to the total weight of the composition (provided that an amount of 1% by weight or less does not materially affect the basic and innovative features of the claimed invention). Similarly, where a composition is essentially free of a particular element, the composition may include 1% by weight or less, 0.5% by weight or less, 0.1% by weight or less, 0.05% by weight or less, or 0.01% by weight or less, or no amount of the specified material. For example, if a composition is "substantially free" or "essentially free" of ethanol, the composition may optionally include ethanol in an amount of up to 1% by weight, per . relative to the total weight of the composition, provided that an amount of up to 1% by weight does not materially affect the basic and innovative characteristics of the composition. In addition, the composition may include 0.5% by weight or less, 0.1% by weight or less, 0.05% by weight or less, 0.01% by weight or less, or no ethanol at all.

[0109] The term "transparent" in relation to a transparent composition indicates that the composition has a transmittance of at least 80% at a wavelength of 600 nm, measured, for example, using a UV-visible Lambda 40 spectrometer. Compositions may have, for example, a transmittance of at least 80%, at least 90%, or at least 95% at a wavelength of 600 nm, measured, for example, using a UV-visible Lambda 40 spectrometer. The term "clear" is interchangeable with the term "transparent" for the purposes of this disclosure. A person can typically see through a transparent composition, for example, and read the text on the other side of a clear glass or clear plastic bottle containing the composition.

[0110] The term "translucent" in relation to a translucent composition indicates that the composition has a transmittance of at least 50% at a wavelength of 600 nm, measured, for example, using a Lambda 40 UV-visible spectrometer. A person is unlikely to be able to see through a translucent composition, for example, and read the text on the other side of a clear glass or clear plastic bottle containing the composition. Instead, the text is usually blurry and difficult or even impossible to read; however, the motion and structure can normally be identified.
