Glazing adapter

Abstract

An adapter 1 for a window or door frame, which is made up of a support portion 2 configured to support an outer frame of a window or door central of an opening in which the outer frame is positioned in use and the external lip portion 3 configured to extend around the external parts of the window or door opening in use. The adapter may further comprise an outer window or door frame that is integral with the support portion or may comprise an outer window or door frame where it is releasably engageable with the support portion. It may also have an internal lip attachment removable engaged with the support portion opposite the external lip portion, which is configured to extend around the internal part of the window or door open, and which may also comprise a clamp plate secured to the support portion with a cover that releasable engages the clamp plate.

Description

Field of the Invention The present invention relates to a glazing adapter. Background to the Invention Holiday homes and park home static caravans most commonly employ window frames, casements, doors and door frames that are manufactured from extruded materials, such as PVC or aluminium. This type of glazing allows the window I door systems used in the industry with fixing and trimming systems that allow a complete glazing set (two doors and up to 12 windows) to be fitted by four people in 20 minutes. Furthermore, all of the window systems presently used on holiday homes and park home static caravans systems look the same and effectively have the window sat against the cladded external surface of the home. But whilst these are quick to fit and do not corrode or leak due to the materials used, there is a need to make these look as close as possible to domestic construction in terms of aesthetics. There has now been devised an adapter for a window or door frame which overcomes and / or substantially mitigates the above referenced and / or disadvantages associated with the prior art. Summary of the Invention In an aspect of the invention there is provided an adapter for a window or door frame, the adapter comprising a support portion distal from an external lip portion, the support portion configured to support an outer frame of a window or door central of an opening in which the outer frame is positioned in use and the external lip portion configured to extend around the external parts of the window or door opening in use. The adapter according to the invention is advantageous primarily because it sets the outer frame of the window or door back into the window or door open-ing / aperture giving a unique look (for this category of glazing systems), and a look more like that of a conventional domestic construction. The adapter does this without compromising on function and allowing retro fit with existing frames. Preferably the adapter further comprises an outer window or door frame and the outer frame is integral with the support portion. This has the benefit that the adapter can be manufactured as one with the outer window or door frame. Preferably the adapter further comprises an outer window or door frame and the outer frame is releasably engageable with the support portion. This has the benefit that the adapter can be retro fitted to an existing outer frame, or where outer frames require replacement, then the two parts can be separated from one another easily. Preferably the adapter further comprises an internal lip attachment removably engageable with the support portion at a position opposite the external lip portion, the internal lip attachment configured to extend around the internal parts of the window or door opening in use. The internal lip provides an aesthetic cover the internal edge of the window or door opening. It also means that it is easier to keep this area of the window or door clean. Preferably the internal lip attachment comprises a clamp plate secured to the support portion in use and a cover which releasably engages with the clamp plate in use and is configured to cover the clamp plate. This allows the internal lip to be retro fitted where required easily. The invention will now be described by way of example only with reference to the drawings in which like numerals represent like parts. Brief Description of the Drawings Figure 1 shows an embodiment of the adapter, Figure 2 shows a second embodiment of the adapter, and Figure 3 shows a third embodiment of the adapter. Detailed Description of the Illustrated Embodiment In figure 1 there is shown an embodiment of the adapter generally designated 1. The adapter 1 comprises a support portion 2 and a lip portion 3. The support portion 2 is distal of the lip portion 3. The adapter 1 made of an extruded section of PVC or metal having a number of chambers 4 to provide a top surface 5 and a bottom surface 6. The top surface 5 of the support portion 3 has extending from it a number of protrusions 7. The lip portion 3 is formed generally at approximately right angles to the support portion 2. In use the adapter 1 is positioned inside a window or door opening 10 such that the support portion 2 is approximately in the central region of the opening 10. The lip portion 3 extends over and around the external edge 22 of the opening 10. The bottom surface 6 is in contact with the opening 10 and the top surface 5 extends upwards. A window or door frame 20 is snapped into engagement with the top surface 5 by virtue of the protrusions 22, which mutually engage with the protrusions 7. The window or door frame 20 has hinged therein a window casement or door 30 which engages with the rear parts 24 of the frame 20 when the casement or door 30 is closed. In this way the parts of the door or window (i.e. the frame 20 and the win-dow / door 30) are recessed from the front external edge 11 of the opening 10, and this gives a more conventional look to the whole window and something that looks more like a window or door in a traditional house. In figure 2 there is shown a second embodiment of the adapter generally designated 101. The embodiment in figure 2 is substantially the same as that in figure 1 except that the frame 120 is integral with the support portion 102 of the adapter 101. In this example the lip portion is referenced 103 which extends over the external edge of the opening 110. The door or casement 130, in the same way as described above, closes on the rear 124 of the frame part 120. In figure 3 there is shown yet another embodiment of the invention where the adapter is generally designated 1001. The adapter 1001 is substantially the same as that described with reference to figure 2, except that it also comprises an internal lip 1040 which is opposite the external lip 1003. The internal lip 1040 comprises a mounting clamp 1042 which is screwed to the rear part of the support portion 1002. The clamp 1042 extends over and around the internal edge 1012 of the opening 1010. On the face of the clamp 1042 extending internally of the building there is a female receiving socket. Attached into the female socket 1044 is a male protrusion 1046 of the cover 1048. This engagement holds the cover 1048 over the clamp 1042 and the edge 1012 and thus makes the edge look more aesthetically correct.

Claims

1. An adapter for a window or door frame, the adapter comprising a support portion distal from an external lip portion, the support portion configured to support an outer frame of a window or door central of an opening in which the outer frame is positioned in use and the external lip portion configured to extend around the external parts of the window or door opening in use.

2. An adapter according to claim 1 wherein the adapter further comprises an outer window or door frame and the outer frame is integral with the support portion.

3. An adapter according to claim 1 wherein the adapter further comprises an outer window or door frame and the outer frame is releasably engageable with the support portion.

4. An adapter according to any preceding claim, wherein the adapter further comprises an internal lip attachment removably engageable with the support portion at a position opposite the external lip portion, the internal lip attachment configured to extend around the internal parts of the window or door opening in use.

5. An adapter according to claim 4, wherein the internal lip attachment comprises a clamp plate secured to the support portion in use and a cover which releasably engages with the clamp plate in use and is configured to cover the clamp plate
