Abstract
Description
[Technical field]
[0001] The present disclosure relates to ophthalmic devices such as contact lenses, scleral lenses, wearable lenses including RGP lenses, implantable lenses including inlays and onlays, and any other type of device with an optical component, more specifically, ophthalmic devices having diffractive structures. [Background technology]
[0002] The surface of a typical soft contact lens contains several circular and / or annular zones. The central part of the lens is the optical zone of the lens, which provides the visual correction for the patient's eye. Beyond the optical zone is the coaptation zone, which is actually a region of rapid (or steep) thickness variation, connecting the optical zone area to the lens peripheral area. The lens peripheral area is primarily designed to provide optimized lens stability and comfort.
[0003] In order to achieve the designed lens power, thickness variation is required within the optical zone. In the optical zone, light rays are refracted at various angles across the optical zone area, and therefore visual correction can be obtained. However, for a particular lens (e.g., a stock keeping unit (SKU) with a target refractive power designed for positive and / or negative correction powers), thickness variation across the optical zone area results in either a very thick edge thickness (for larger negative SKU lenses) or a very thin edge thickness (for larger positive SKU lenses). Beyond the optical zone, a junction area is required to connect the lens optical zone edge with the lens peripheral area. If the optical zone edge thickness is very thin or very thick, a sharp junction is required. A sharp junction area is difficult to fabricate during manufacturing and uncomfortable for the patient. Summary of the Invention [Problem to be solved by the invention]
[0004] Therefore, minimizing thickness variation is important to reduce the abrupt interface area. By minimizing lens thickness variation across the optical zone, the lens power has also been reduced. For higher SKU lenses, the smaller thickness variation cannot meet the power correction requirements.
[0005] Improvement is needed. [Means for solving the problem]
[0006] The present disclosure relates to an ophthalmic device, such as an ophthalmic lens. The ophthalmic device may include a diffractive pattern for the peripheral region of the lens optic zone (OZ) area. At the edge of a soft contact lens, the light refractive power can be modified by the diffractive pattern, and therefore thickness variations are not as important.
[0007] The present disclosure relates to an ophthalmic device, such as an ophthalmic lens, that may include a body including an optic zone and a peripheral zone disposed adjacent to the optic zone, the optic zone including a refractive structure exhibiting a first refractive power, and a diffractive structure disposed within the optic zone, the diffractive structure exhibiting a second refractive power, the ophthalmic lens being associated with a first target SKU refractive power.
[0008] The ophthalmic lens may comprise a body including an optical zone and a peripheral zone disposed adjacent to the optical zone, the optical zone including a refractive structure exhibiting a first refractive power, and a diffractive structure disposed within the optical zone, adjacent to the optical zone, or both, the diffractive structure exhibiting a second refractive power, the ophthalmic lens being associated with a first target SKU refractive power, and at least the diffractive structure being configured such that a diameter of the optical zone of the ophthalmic lens and a diameter of the optical zone of the comparative lens are at least 7.0 mm, and the comparative lens is substantially similar to the ophthalmic lens, but the comparative lens is associated with a second target SKU refractive power different from the first target SKU refractive power.
[0009] The ophthalmic lens may comprise a body including an optical zone and a peripheral zone disposed adjacent to the optical zone, the optical zone including a refractive structure exhibiting a first refractive power, and a diffractive structure disposed adjacent to or within the optical zone, the diffractive structure exhibiting a second refractive power, at least the diffractive structure minimizing variation between a thickness of a central portion of the optical zone of the ophthalmic lens and a thickness of a central portion of the optical zone of a comparative lens, the comparative lens being substantially similar to the ophthalmic lens, but the comparative lens having a refractive structure exhibiting a third refractive power different from the first refractive power.
[0010] The ophthalmic lens may comprise a body including an optical zone and a peripheral zone disposed adjacent to the optical zone, the optical zone including a refractive structure exhibiting a first refractive power, and a diffractive structure disposed adjacent to or within the optical zone, the diffractive structure exhibiting a second refractive power, at least the diffractive structure configured to minimize a root-mean-square (RMS) variation between a thickness variation profile of the ophthalmic lens and a thickness variation profile of a comparative lens, the comparative lens being substantially similar to the ophthalmic lens, but the comparative lens having a refractive structure exhibiting a third refractive power different from the first refractive power.
[0011] The ophthalmic lens may comprise a body including an optical zone and a peripheral zone disposed adjacent to the optical zone, the optical zone including a refractive structure exhibiting a first refractive power, and a diffractive structure disposed adjacent to or within the optical zone, the diffractive structure exhibiting a second refractive power, at least the diffractive structure minimizing variation between the optical zone edge bond thickness of the ophthalmic lens and the optical zone edge bond thickness of a comparative lens, the comparative lens being substantially similar to the ophthalmic lens, but the comparative lens having a refractive structure exhibiting a third refractive power different from the first refractive power. [Brief description of the drawings]
[0012] The above and other features and advantages of the present disclosure will become apparent from the following more particular description of preferred embodiments of the present disclosure, as illustrated in the accompanying drawings. [Figure 6] 1 is a graph showing lens center thickness versus optical power for a conventional refractive optical design (straight line) and a combined diffractive and refractive lens design (dotted line). [Figure 7]1 is a graph showing a spherical lens thickness profile. Specifically, negative lenses have thicker edge thickness than positive lenses. As an example, in a mixed diffractive and refractive design, the lens thickness variation can be the same as the current -3D lens with only refractive power (-3D target SKU power) across the entire SKU range. Thus, other target SKU power lenses can be provided with the same or similar lens thickness variation and therefore with the same comfort as the current -3D lens with only refractive power. [Figure 8] 1 is a graph outlining lens edge thickness versus lens power / SKU. [Figure 9] 1 is a graph showing non-limiting exemplary optical zone (OZ) diameters for various lenses. Other sizes of OZ may be used. [Figure 10] 1 is a graph showing non-limiting exemplary coaptation zone size diameters for various lenses. Other sizes of coaptation zones may be used. DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE PREFERRED EMBODIMENTS
[0013] The ophthalmic device may include implantable devices and / or wearable devices such as contact lenses. Conventional contact lenses include polymer structures with specific shapes that correct various vision problems. The ophthalmic device may include an optical zone and a peripheral zone disposed adjacent to the optical zone. The optical zone may have one or more of the following functions: vision correction, vision enhancement, other vision-related functions, mechanical support, or even providing a gap to provide clear vision. According to the present disclosure, the optical zone may include a variable optical element configured to enhance vision in near and far ranges based on a signal sensed from the ciliary muscle. The variable optical element may include any device suitable for changing the focal length or refractive power of the lens based on an activation signal from a sensing system described herein. For example, the variable optical element may be as simple as a small piece of optical grade plastic incorporated into the lens that can change its spherical curvature.
[0014] As a non-limiting example, the power of a soft contact lens can be obtained by the variation of lens thickness across the diameter of the optic zone (OZ) of the soft contact lens. In a negative power lens, the thickness of the lens edge can be greater than the center thickness. On the other hand, a positive power lens can have a thicker center thickness compared to the edge. As shown in Figures 1A and 1B for negative and positive, respectively, the higher the power (e.g., the higher the target SKU power), the greater the thickness difference was between the center of the lens and the OZ edge of the lens. Just beyond the OZ edge, a mechanical joint area may be used to ease the lens thickness from the optical edge to a thickness optimized for mechanical stability and lens comfort, e.g., to manipulate the lens thickness in the joint area for comfort. Exemplary OZ diameters for various lenses (SKUs) with various refractive powers (D) are shown in Figure 9. Exemplary joint sizes for various lenses (SKUs) with various refractive powers (D) are shown in Figure 10. As an example, a large variation in lens thickness would imply a steeper interface area to transition the thickness from the OZ edge to the mechanical zone, however, precise manufacture of a steep optical interface is difficult and a steep interface zone would also significantly affect the wear comfort of the lens.
[0015] In the present disclosure, the difference in lens thickness between the center and edge of the lens OZ can be minimized using diffractive structures disposed at or adjacent to the lens OZ edge. Instead of relying entirely on light refraction (due to thickness variation), strong refractive power (e.g., stronger than -4 for minus lenses or stronger than 1D for plus lenses) can also be generated by diffractive structures. Thus, the lenses of the present disclosure can minimize the overall thickness variation across the lens OZ and can minimize abrupt joint zones. Exemplary lens designs incorporating diffractive optics are shown in Figures 1C and 1D for negative and positive lenses, respectively. Diffractive patterns in the OZ peripheral area can optimize the overall lens thickness variation.
[0016] FIG. 1 shows an example of a lens with a diffractive pattern built into the lens edge in a radius range of 2-6 mm. As shown by the lens power in FIG. 2B, the total lens power is -9D, the refractive power is -3D, and the diffractive power is -6D. As shown, two-thirds of the lens power is contributed by the diffractive pattern. FIG. 2A shows the designed surface shape of the diffractive pattern.
[0017] FIG. 3 shows the optical performance of the designed lens with a lens power of −3D. In general, the overall theoretical diffraction efficiency is about 99%. FIG. 3A and FIG. 3B show the through-focus MTF and visual acuity (VA) of the designed lens with pupil diameters of 3.0 mm, 4.5 mm, and 6.0 mm, respectively (without accommodation of the patient's eye). A visual performance of about 20 / 20 was observed in the patient with a refractive error of −3D.
[0018] FIG. 4 shows the uneven distribution of refractive power and diffractive power across the contact OZ area. As an illustrative example, a single vision lens has a SKU / power of -3D. In one embodiment of the design, the distribution of diffractive power and refractive power is listed in the table of FIG. 4B. As an example, within the OZ area, the diffractive power is typically not distributed uniformly across the entire OZ area. As shown in FIG. 4A, at the OZ center, the refractive power dominates the total lens power, while at the edge of the contact lens, the diffractive power plays a major role. The total lens power was maintained across the entire OZ zone.
[0019] 5 is a plot of OZ diameter versus optical power by OZ diameter for a conventional refractive optical design (straight line) and a hybrid diffractive and refractive lens design (dotted line). As shown, the hybrid diffractive and refractive lens design of the present disclosure minimizes the variation in OZ diameter across the power / SKU spectrum.
[0020] 6 shows the center thickness of the lens versus optical power for a conventional refractive optical design (straight line) and a hybrid diffractive and refractive lens design (dotted line). As shown, the hybrid diffractive and refractive lens design of the present disclosure minimizes the variation in center thickness across the spectrum of optical powers / SKUs.
[0021] In conventional designs, in addition to the variation in center thickness, the thickness of the lens optic zone edge also varies depending on the lens power / SKU. Figure 7 shows the thickness profile of lenses with different powers. The x-axis is the lens radius and the y-axis is the thickness. Clearly, the negative lenses have a thicker OZ edge thickness and the positive lenses have a thinner OZ edge thickness. In this design, the -3D lens has a very smooth transition from the optic zone to the peripheral mechanical zone, as indicated by the arrows. Due to the proposed combined diffractive / refractive lens design, the lens thickness variation profile can be uniform or substantially similar (or the same or similar to the example -3D refractive lens shown to have desirable comfort) across SKUs. In another embodiment, the diffractive power can also be partially distributed across the lens surface. As an example, the diffractive pattern may cover only the lens peripheral region. As shown in Figure 8, the inner radius of the diffractive pattern is set to R diff and an inner radius of zero would result in a lens OZ with a uniform lens thickness. If the diffraction pattern only partially covers the lens surface (e.g., in the circumferential direction), the thickness of the lens edge will vary, although the amount of variation will still be less than in a lens design without a diffraction pattern.
[0022] Figure 8 shows a schematic of lens edge thickness versus lens power / SKU. If the diffractive power covers the entire lens surface, the edge thickness can be designed uniformly across SKUs. If the diffractive pattern only partially covers the lens surface, there will be variation in edge thickness (as shown by the dashed lines).
