Abstract
Description
[Technical field]
[0001] The present invention relates to a personal care pod. Specifically, the present invention relates to a personal care pod, comprising a self-supporting film, the self-supporting film comprising 20-100% by weight of crosslinked cellulose ether based on the weight of the self-supporting film, the crosslinked cellulose ether containing 0.1-0.6% by weight of polyether group based on the weight of the crosslinked cellulose ether, and a personal care formulation, the self-supporting film forms a cavity, the personal care formulation is disposed in the cavity, the personal care formulation is in contact with the self-supporting film, and the self-supporting film encapsulates the personal care formulation.
[0002] Personal care products (e.g., shampoos, body washes, hair conditioners, shaving creams) are typically sold to consumers in the form of liquids or gels. These personal care products generally contain active ingredients (e.g., surfactants, conditioners) in combination with a significant amount of water. These personal care products are also typically commercially provided to consumers in containers with enough product for multiple uses. While such personal care product forms are suitable for many consumer applications, there remains a need for single-use forms (e.g., for use in the travel and hospitality industry) and multi-use concentrated forms that allow consumers to form use-strength personal care formulations through the addition of water, especially forms that allow personal care active ingredients to be packaged and shipped separately from the majority of the water used to make the personal care formulation.
[0003] For use in the hospitality / travel industry, personal care products have been provided in small plastic bottles, however, these formats result in undesirably high packaging-to-product ratios, leading to higher costs and increased waste.
[0004] In U.S. Patent No. 11,045,397, Stern et al. disclose a hygiene product pod and a method of using the same. Specifically, Stern et al. disclose a hygiene product pod comprising a water-soluble envelope and an emulsified liquid hygiene product sealed within the envelope, the hygiene product comprising a surfactant in an amount of about 10% to about 40% by weight based on the total weight of the hygiene product, a first polyol in an amount of about 10% to about 30% by weight based on the total weight of the hygiene product, the first polyol comprising propylene glycol in an amount of about 10% to about 20% by weight based on the total weight of the hygiene product, glycerin in an amount of about 1% to about 10% by weight, and optionally less than 6% by weight of glycerin. the amount of dipropylene glycol in an amount of less than 5% by weight, hexylene glycol in an amount of less than 5% by weight, a second polyol in an amount ranging from about 10% to about 50% by weight, the second polyol being at least one polyglyceryl fatty acid ester (PGE) selected from the group consisting of polyglyceryl-2 caprate, polyglyceryl-3 caprate, polyglyceryl-3 laurate, and polyglyceryl-6 ester, and a liquid amide in an amount ranging from about 5% to about 40% by weight, and having a free water content of about 9% or less by weight.
[0005] One problem with conventionally packaged concentrates is that personal care formulations formed with the concentrates have inadequate viscosity, given the difficulty of stably formulating conventional rheology modifiers into concentrated formulations incorporated into the package. The lack of viscosity in compositions formed from pods can be viewed negatively by consumers and can adversely hinder the performance of, for example, shampoo and body wash formulations where rheology may be required.
[0006] Thus, there remains a need for a packaged personal care pod for preparing a personal care product, where the formed personal care product has an improved viscosity. In particular, there remains a need for a self-supporting film composition that can provide a thickening effect to the personal care formulation formed by the personal care pod made with such a self-supporting film composition.
[0007] The present invention provides a personal care pod comprising a self-supporting film, the self-supporting film comprising 20-100% by weight of crosslinked cellulose ether, based on the weight of the self-supporting film, the crosslinked cellulose ether containing 0.1-0.6% by weight of polyether groups, based on the weight of the crosslinked cellulose ether; and a personal care formulation, wherein the self-supporting film forms a cavity, the personal care formulation is disposed within the cavity, the personal care formulation is in contact with the self-supporting film, and the self-supporting film encapsulates the personal care formulation.

[0070] Some embodiments of the present invention will now be described in detail in the following examples.
[0071] Synthesis S1: Crosslinked cellulose ether The crosslinker used in synthesis S1 was a linear poly(propylene glycol) diglycidyl ether made from polypropylene glycol (PPG) having a molecular weight of approximately 400 daltons and the formula:
[0072] [ka] [wherein n is 5.7 to 6.7 (EPILOX™ M985 poly(propylene glycol) diglycidyl ether crosslinker available from Leuna-Harze GmbH, Leuna, DE)].
[0073] Milled cellulose floc (1.5 mol) was added to a 5 L autoclave. The autoclave was purged with nitrogen gas three times and the contents of the autoclave were then heated to 40° C. Dimethyl ether (DME, 4.7 mol / mol anhydroglucose units (AGU)) and methyl chloride (MCl, 3.2 mol / mol AGU) were then injected into the autoclave. Caustic soda (NaOH, 50 wt% strength aqueous, 1.9 mol NaOH / mol AGU) was added to the autoclave in three portions over a period of 2 minutes at a temperature of 40° C. The reaction mixture was held at 40° C. for 30 minutes. Ethylene oxide (0.45 mol / mol AGU) was then added and the reaction mixture was held at 40° C. for 10 minutes. The crosslinker (EPILOX™ M985 crosslinker, 0.0025 mol / mol AGU) was dissolved in 20 mL of isopropanol and added to the contents of the autoclave in six portions spaced 30 seconds apart. The contents of the autoclave were then heated to 80° C. in 40 minutes. At 80° C., a water-soluble monovalent copper ligand (MCL 2, 1.3 mol / mol AGU) was rapidly injected into the autoclave. NaOH (0.67 mol / mol AGU) was then added in seven portions over 30 minutes, followed by a cook-off period of 70 minutes at 80° C. Following this, the product crosslinked cellulose ether was washed in hot water (>95° C.), neutralized with formic acid, granulated, dried, and milled.
[0074] Comparative Examples C1-C18 and Examples 1-15: Film / Additive Blends Water-soluble film / additive blends were prepared according to Comparative Examples C1-C18 and Examples 1-15 by mixing together the components in the concentrations listed in Table 1.
[0075] [Table 1]
[0076] Viscosity measurements of films blended with additives The viscosities of the water-soluble film / additive blends prepared according to Comparative Examples C1-C18 and Examples 1-15 were measured using a Brookfield DV-II programmable viscometer equipped with a CP-52 spindle at 25° C. Measurements were made for each blend at 5 rpm, 10 rpm, 20 rpm, and 50 rpm and are reported in Table 2.
[0077] [Table 2]
[0078] Examples 16 to 25: Water-soluble films Water-soluble films were formed in each of Examples 16-25 by placing a water-soluble film / additive blend prepared according to one of Examples 1-10, as described in Table 3, in a ventilated oven at 60° C. and drying to form a film. Once formed, the film was then redispersed in water to form a 1 wt. % aqueous solution. The viscosity of these 1 wt. % solutions was then measured at 25° C. using a Brookfield DV-II programmable viscometer equipped with a CP-52 spindle. Measurements were made for each blend at 5 rpm, 10 rpm, 20 rpm, and 50 rpm and are reported in Table 3.

[0080] Prophetic Formulation F1: Concentrated Shampoo Formulation A shampoo formulation of Prophetic Formulation F1 is prepared by mixing together the ingredients in the weight proportions set forth in Table 4.
[0081] [Table 4]
[0082] Predictive film resistance to concentrated shampoo formulations. A drop of a concentrated prophetic shampoo formulation from prophetic formulation F2 is applied to the surface of a water-soluble film formed according to each of Examples 16-25. Each film is observed to resist penetration of the concentrated hard surface cleaning composition.
[0083] Synthetic S2: Freestanding film The crosslinked cellulose ether (1 g) prepared according to Synthesis S1, calcium chloride dihydrate (0.4 g), and deionized water (98.6 g) were mixed together, and the mixture was then deposited on a substrate and dried in a ventilated oven at 60° C. to form a film.
[0084] Resistance of freestanding films to concentrated shampoo formulations. A prophetic concentrated shampoo formulation according to prophetic formulation F1 is added to an Eppendorf tube. A free-standing film prepared according to synthesis S2 is used to cap the opening of the Eppendorf tube. The Eppendorf tube is then inverted so that the opening faces down, such that the concentrated shampoo formulation in the tube is supported by the free-standing film. The free-standing film is observed to resist penetration of the concentrated shampoo formulation.
