Abstract
Description
[Technical field]
[0001] The present invention relates to a carrier assembly and a portable carrier assembly for storing elongated shaped members or elongated shaped members as part of other objects or tools, an anti-rotation member for holding elongated articles, a central storage system, and a method for inserting or removing at least one elongated shaped article or member into said assembly. The present invention is particularly directed to a carrier assembly for peripheral storage of elongated articles, such as golf clubs, including a central storage area for accessories, with a removable and portable carrier assembly for elongated articles, such as golf clubs. A method for inserting and removing elongated articles, such as golf clubs, is also disclosed. [Background technology]
[0002] Background technology Golf, invented in Scotland in the 15th century, is an example of using an elongated member or article with a carrier, such as golf clubs with a golf bag. Golf is now an important global game and sport for over 20 million players around the world, with recent reports indicating that there are over 500,000 players in New Zealand and over 1.3 million players in Australia. Golf has many attractions, including competition, camaraderie, the outdoors, nature, physical, mental and health benefits, and can be played alone, in a team, with friends or with strangers.
[0003] A modern golf club set usually consists of three woods (driver no. 1, no. 3, no. 5), at least one hybrid (3H), seven irons (no. 4, no. 5, no. 6, no. 7, no. 8, no. 9, no. PW) and a putter, giving a total of 12 clubs, although a maximum of 14 is permitted.
[0004] In contrast to other sports, golf is closely linked to the golf bag, which has existed since the 18th century and serves to store and hold golf clubs and related playing equipment. The golf bag is carried on a shoulder strap, a golf trundler, or a golf cart, and the structure of the game and golf courses requires that it be kept close at hand during the game. Ergonomically, existing bags are poorly designed or elongated throughout their flexible tubular shape, which is common for arms and shoulders to become sore over the long game and distance involved. Caddies, in particular, often suffer back, shoulder, and ankle sprains when twisting their bodies to raise and lower the bag from the ground.
[0005] Typically, golf bags are made of flexible materials, and golf clubs are stored centrally in a central pocket in a central storage area. Because the bag is very flexible, it is easily damaged by impact or moisture. Accessories are stored in randomly positioned zippered pockets on the outside of the bag, which must be attached separately, such as by threading, and when combined with flexible materials, they are prone to wear and tear and can have a frayed or ragged appearance.
[0006] Such bags have a bulky profile and weight, are heavy to transport, and have curved edges with protruding pockets that do not provide safe and secure storage, especially during transportation in a vehicle, which means that the clubs may act as weapons in a traffic accident.
[0007] Moreover, and most importantly, golf clubs must be lifted vertically to be removed and then inserted downwards to be replaced from the central storage area. This lifting and downward insertion / removal is very cumbersome and makes it difficult to maneuver each club upwards and downwards into or out of the separate pockets of the golf bag, whereby such movement or jostling of clubs can strain the player's arms. Also, sloppy central club storage locations and dropping and picking up clubs can cause clattering noises that can be distracting or disrespectful to other players. Such noises, including clattering, can also occur when the bag moves while walking between shots, which is particularly disrespectful since it is golf etiquette to remain quiet while others are taking shots. It is also golf etiquette to maintain a fast pace of play, which can often include walking quietly to the next shot while others are preparing and taking shots. Also, hitting the clubs or clattering against each other can damage the clubs, especially the heads.
[0008] While using a golf bag, it can be difficult to laboriously remove each club and place a club head cover on each club head, which can be tedious when one needs to rush to the next hole to repeat the process throughout the day. As a result, golf club head covers are very easy to get lost on the golf course.
[0009] Also, the sloppy centering of the golf clubs makes it hard to tell which club is which and the clubs tend to look cluttered and noisy, which makes club selection difficult, frustrating and time consuming.
[0010] Also, in bad weather other problems can arise such as having rain gear, windproof clothing, cold weather clothing and sun protection stored in a convenient but easily accessible place. One solution in rainy weather is to cover the golf bag with a plastic bag or pouch with access through a separate zipper. This can be cumbersome and not very convenient. If water gets in, it cannot escape and soaks everything.
[0011] Existing golf bags are very hard to find, have clubs that are always scattered so space is wasted, storage is haphazardly sized and positioned, there are random exterior pockets all over the place that have to be opened individually so a lot of space is wasted, it's very hard to remember what's in which pocket, and when moving the bag around on a golf cart there are multiple straps to fiddle with.
[0012] The problem is that golfers have to carry all their very heavy golf clubs in one bag near the green of each hole of the golf course, only to return to the tee box of the next golf hole to restart the ground. Many golfers leave their golf clubs next to the tee box of the next hole, and take out only their putter and one or two chipping clubs and carry them to the green. This can easily cause clubs to be lost, as the clubs are left lying around the grass around the green after use. Also, the handles of the clubs lying around the ground like this get wet, making them difficult to use. There is a need for a portable, freestanding, weatherproof, lightweight bag that is easy to use instead of the awkward vertical introduction / removal of golf clubs, and does not require the carrying of another item apart from the bag.
[0013] Setting up and pairing a traditional golf bag with a trundler requires many steps and effort when removing it from the trunk of a car.

DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE PREFERRED EMBODIMENTS
[0131] definition We prefer to use the term "carrier assembly" rather than golf club bag because the carrier assembly has a rigid case (hence it is not a flexible bag) and the clubs are held outside the case. Carrier assemblies for elongated shaped articles can also be applied to store or transport a variety of sports equipment, for example, lacrosse sticks, baseball and softball bats, racquets such as tennis racquets, and the like.
[0132] It is recognized that the term "comprise" may be ascribed either an exclusive or an inclusive meaning under various jurisdictions. In this specification, unless otherwise specified, the term "comprise" is intended to have an inclusive meaning, i.e., to include not only the recited components to which it directly refers, but also other non-specific components or elements. This rationale is also used when the term "comprised" or "comprising" is used in connection with one or more steps of a method or process. The terms "including and having" or "having and including" are defined as including (i.e., open language) as used herein.
[0133] In the following description, the terms "top", "upper", "lower", "lower", "right", "left", "vertical", "horizontal", "top", "bottom", "lateral", "longitudinal", "side", "front", "rear" and derivatives thereof shall refer to the present invention as oriented in the figures of the drawings. It should be understood, however, that the present invention may take on various alternative forms unless expressly specified to the contrary.
[0134] Description of the drawings The following description describes the invention in relation to preferred embodiments of the invention, i.e., a carrier assembly 1 for an elongated article 2, a tool or implement having an elongated article or as part of another object, such as a golf club or a tennis racket, and a method. The invention is in no way limited to these preferred embodiments. These preferred embodiments are purely for the purpose of illustrating the invention, and possible variations and modifications will be readily apparent without departing from the scope of the invention.
[0135] As shown in Figures 1-64, the carrier assembly 1 of the present invention includes an elongated shaped body 1a anthropometrically shaped to provide storage therein for at least one elongated shaped article 2, e.g. a golf article such as a golf club 2, for resting self-supporting on a base 4, e.g. the ground, floor or platform (see Figure 56).
[0136] Overall, the carrier assembly 1 is elongated and substantially trapezoidal in shape (the long sides are slightly curved rather than straight, as best seen in FIG. 15). In use, its width is much smaller than its height, and its depth is greater than its width, allowing for seven housings on the outside of each slightly curved side (and part of each door), allowing up to 14 clubs to be carried on the outside of the carrier assembly (leaving the interior space available for towels and other accessories). Alternatively, the carrier may be of substantially rectangular cross-section with sides long enough to accommodate up to seven clubs per side.
[0137] The golf carrier assembly 1 includes a carrier assembly handle 6 for grasping and enabling the carrier assembly to be moved, e.g., lifted, pushed, and pulled. The elongated shaped body of the golf carrier assembly 1 includes a front side 10 that faces the player, a rear side 12, a left side 14, a right side 16, a base 18, and a top 20, when in use. The carrier assembly handle 6 is formed as a curved elongated member adjacent a handle aperture 7 and is located at the rear upper end of the top 20.
[0138] At least one strap support member 8 is slidably, removably and adjustably mounted to the rear of the carrier assembly 1 and is designed for optional use in combination with the handle 6 .
[0139] The distance between the base 18 and the top 20 defines the height 26 of the golf carrier assembly, the distance between the front wall 10 and the rear wall 12 defines the depth 30, and the distance between the left side wall 14 and the right side wall 16 defines the width 32.
[0140] Height 26 is significantly greater than width 32 and is distinct from depth 30. Height 26 is selected to resemble the height or length 34 of an elongated shaped article 2, such as a typical golf club 2. Depth 30 is a similar dimension to width 32, but may be somewhat larger to form an approximately rectangular or trapezoidal cross-sectional shape.
[0141] The orientation of height 26 thereby defines a vertical plane 40 , at right angles to which lies a horizontal plane 42 .
[0142] The elongated shaped body of the golf carrier assembly 1, 56 includes the following interconnected and operatively connected components: a wall support housing member assembly 46, a floor assembly 48, a lid assembly 50, at least one door assembly 52, at least one elongated shaped housing 54 located around the housing 46 of a volumetric shape and configuration for containing at least one elongated article 2 as part of the portable carrier assembly 56 and / or in the form of a fixed part of the carrier assembly 1. In this example, the housings 54 are provided back to back. In the case of the portable carrier assembly 56, two housings 54 are shown, but it is envisioned that any number of housings 54 may be provided. Other optional accessories may include wheels, a trundler device, and a carrier storage system 60.
[0143] As seen in Figures 15-26 and 29, the wall support housing assembly 46 includes an elongated planar shaped body shape having a generally U-shaped cross-section and at least one rear support member or back spine member 62 located outboard of the base of the U-shaped cross-section.
[0144] The wall support housing assembly 46 is a substantially closed structure of generally U-shaped cross section when viewed from above, made and formed from molded planar members forming a wall having a thickness bounded by an outer surface 64 and an inner surface 66, thereby configured to have and support an interior storage cavity for receiving and supporting at least a portion of the carrier storage system 60 therein, the outer surface 64 providing or being part of a positioning surface and / or recess 68 for at least one elongated shaped housing 54 for removably storing and positioning at least one removably elongated article 2, such as a golf club.
[0145] housing The elongated housing 54 includes an elongated space 94 having a volumetric shape and configuration capable of accommodating at least one elongated article 2 therein in use; and - molded as part of a separable, portable carrier assembly 56 designed to be separately removable from the exterior recess 68 of the exterior surface 64 of the wall housing assembly 46; and / or - molded as a fixed part of the outer surface 64 of the side walls 76, 80 of the wall housing assembly 46; and / or - Used in combination with a separate clip holder 801 (fig. 65).
[0146] The U-shaped cross-section of the housing assembly 46 has a front opening 71 bounded by side edge pillars 71a.
[0147] The carrier storage system 60 (see Figures 6, 8-13, 27-29) is formed into an upper small compartment system 72 accessible only by the lid assembly 50, and a lower large compartment system 74 accessible only by the door assembly 52. "Small" and "Large" refer to the relative dimensions selected for the size of each compartment 72, 74.
[0148] The U-shaped cross section includes a left side wall 76, a rear wall 78, and a right side wall 80. As seen in Figures 15, 15A, 15B, the left side wall 76 and the right side wall 80 include exterior surfaces shaped and adapted to receive thereon and secure to at least one elongated shaped article housing 54, such as a golf club housing. The rear support member or spine 62 is disposed on the outer surface 64 of the rear wall 78. The rear wall 78 may have at least one trundler bracket recess therein for mounting and dismounting a trundler device (although we have found this is no longer necessary).
[0149] The left and right portions 76, 80 are molded to provide at least one outwardly facing recess 68 shaped, sized and configured to removably or non-removably securely receive at least one elongated shaped housing 54 for receiving at least one elongated article 2 (e.g., a golf club) therein.
[0150] 15, 29, 65, 81-84, 88, 89, the rear support member 62 is an elongated shaped member made of a material or combination of materials sufficient to provide strength to the wall housing assembly 46 or carrier assembly 1, and may be made of lightweight aluminum, for example, and extends substantially from the top to the bottom of the rear wall 78. The U-shape of the housing assembly 46 may be made of two halves that create a U-shape, with an edge joint on the inside, and the rear support member 62 joined or connected to the exterior of the wall housing assembly 46 such that it covers the joint between the two halves.
[0151] The rear support member 62 has a cross-section of a planar base member having a central elongated base portion for fastening to the rear wall 78 of the wall housing 46 and a rounded outwardly projecting edge / curled lip shaped and configured to allow for removably fastening an accessory such as a trundler or wheel assembly.
[0152] At least one strap support member 8 is slidably, removably and adjustably attached to at least one rear support member 62 to provide retention therearound or therein, providing a pair of spaced slotted apertures for slidingly receiving a portion of a carry strap therethrough, and allowing, in use, a user to hold it in hand / arm / shoulder, either by itself or in combination with holding the handle 6, to lift or move the carrier assembly 1. The strap support member 8 may include an elongated shaped body having upper and lower ends including a planar base 63a and a horizontally oriented aperture with end slots (two parallel elongated different sized horizontal slots 63b) projecting outwardly therefrom. The sides of the planar member are shaped to provide side edges 63c with clipping lips 63d for removably manually clicking the strap support member 8 around the outer side edges of the rear support member 62 to enable it to be gripped or clamped to the post 62. The planar body also includes vertical apertures 63e with side posts 63f forming a T-shape, one post providing attachment means as a landing 63g projecting laterally into the aperture 63e for anchoring to a strap. The side posts 63f may be formed as outwardly curved elongated members. The strap support member 8 may also be referred to as a bracket-like member.
[0153] As shown in the figures (e.g., Figs. 1-5, 7, 9, 11-26, 29, 30-33, 53-60), each elongated shaped article housing 54 includes an elongated, planar, substantially space 94 shaped to removably receive and allow placement therein of at least one elongated article 2. In this example, the elongated shaped housing 54 is shaped as an elongated, planar, substantially rectangular or prismatic member (e.g., long and thin) that defines a closed, elongated, planar space located outside the outer surfaces 64 of the left and right outer sidewalls 76, 80 of the wall-supported housing member 46.
[0154] An elongated planar rectangular space 94 is defined containing a front outer planar wall 86 separated from a rear inner planar wall 88. The inner planar wall 88 may be formed as a separate wall relative to the left and right outer sidewalls 76, 80 of the wall support housing member 46 or may be formed as the same wall, i.e., may serve a dual purpose.
[0155] The enclosed elongated rectangular planar space 94 is subdivided by elongated end sidewalls 92 extending from top to bottom and is laterally subdivided into at least one club housing or elongated shaped housing 54, whereby each elongated shaped housing 54 is shaped and configured to accommodate at least one elongated article 2, such as, for example, a golf club 2, therein with a single housed, parallel oriented club in line with one elongated article / golf club head 144 protruding upwardly therefrom.
[0156] Each elongated space 94 must be shaped and sized to not only retain at least one elongated member 2 therein, but also to contain at least one removably attached anti-rotation member 96, as seen in Figs. 14-26, located on side wall 92 or any other suitable wall, e.g., 76, 80, 88, where required to removably retain at least a portion of an elongated article 2 or elongated member, which may or may not be part of another object or article, e.g., a golf club, tennis racquet, etc. At least one anti-rotation member 96 may be removably located, attached or secured where needed, including adjacent or abutting the bottom / base or floor 108 of the enclosed space 94 of each housing 54 in this example. The anti-rotation members 96 may be attached at any interval, vertically and / or horizontally or diagonally, at any location or abutment of any of the walls 92, 76, 80 and 88, as desired or required.
[0157] In still other examples, adjacent anti-rotation members 96, single or dual opposing anti-rotation members 96, or a plurality on one or each side wall 92, with or without upward spaced apart connections to each other, may be provided.
[0158] In a currently preferred option, the anti-rotation member 96 may be placed within a suitable clip holder 801 (see Figures 65 and 66) having a roof portion 110 and a circular aperture 122, the base of the clip holder being open so that the clip holder functions as the top of each housing.
[0159] In this example, as seen in Figures 14 and 27, on at least one of the left and right portions 76, 80 of the wall-supported housing member 46, there are seven elongated housings 54 or seven elongated spaces 94, each having at least one anti-rotation member 96, and each individually accommodating fourteen elongated objects 2, such as golf clubs, located on or near the floor 108 of the elongated housings 54.
[0160] The depth or height of the rear two golf elongated article housings 54 can be formed with a larger dimension to accommodate longer elongated articles 2 or clubs, meaning that the elongated shaped article housings 54 extend into the housing of the floor assembly 48 and terminate in a recessed end floor lattice floor panel 98 (e.g., providing a base, useful for drainage of moisture from the stored elongated articles 2 (e.g., clubs) or functioning as a floor vent), and thus the anti-rotation member 96 may optionally be required here.
[0161] As an example, a housing for a golf club is 716mm high (shorter than the shortest club), and on average 40mm deep and 40mm wide, although depending on the size of the club (and its handle diameter) some may need to be wider or narrower than others. Clubs and putters vary in length, but are generally between 890mm and 1145mm.
[0162] The elongated planar space 94 is formed as a rectangular polygonal space whereby the rear wall 88, front wall 86 and side end walls 92 are connected to a floor 108 and a roof 110. There is a height 112 between the floor 108 and roof 110, a width 114 between the side end walls 92 and a depth 116 between the rear panel 88 and the front panel 86. These dimensions may vary depending on the nature of the elongated items, but it is preferred that the height is slightly less than the length of each item so that only a portion of the item (i.e. golf club) protrudes from the top so that it can be easily identified and grasped for removal from the housing. The trapezoidal carrier has a rear face approximately 280 mm wide, a front face approximately 200 mm wide, and sloping sides (encompassing a portion of the L-shaped door when closed) approximately 320 mm from rear to front, which is large enough for seven housings (two of which are attached to a portion of the door).
[0163] The end sidewalls 92 and rear inner planar sidewall 88 / left and right outer sidewalls 76, 80, together with a floor 108 and a roof 110, are formed in the shape of an end-oriented elongated rectangular tubular member having an outer edge, with the front outer planar wall 86 separately attached to its outer edge and continuously encompassing the roof 110. The end sidewalls 92, rear inner planar sidewalls 88, 76, 80, and floor 108 are formed of plastic, while the front wall 86 and roof 110 of the carrier assembly 1 or portable carrier 56 are formed of either a unitary piece and / or multiple strips of a flexible deformable material, for example an injection molded polyurethane such as a rubber material.
[0164] The material of the front wall 86 and roof 110 can be any material, such as rubber or composite plastic and / or rubber material, that is functionally capable of bending, flexing, or shearing to allow for the ingress or egress of an object, such as an elongated article. After ingress or egress of the article 2, the material of the front wall 86 must be able to return to its original relaxed but closed position, i.e., the original position of the slits 120 in the front wall 86 and roof 110. The material is preferably soft enough to allow for easy insertion and removal of the clubs, yet rigid enough to hold each club comfortably in place and provide weather protection for the club handles. It should be noted that while most clubs have handles of similar width, putters generally have a larger diameter handle, so some variation in the size of the housing or slit width may be necessary to accommodate different clubs or putters.
[0165] Furthermore, the material of the front wall 86 and roof 110 having the openings 122 is also a material that allows the trapped items 2 to be held within the space of the housing 54 and not to fall out easily or at all. This material of the front wall and roof 110 must also have some degree of water resistance and be able to close the slits 120 and not allow a large amount of moisture to enter the enclosed areas such as 54 or pockets or shelves, and drainage slots or holes are provided.
[0166] In use, the rectangular polygon shaped space is oriented such that its floor 108 is located at the base of the recess 68 and / or at the top of the floor assembly 48 and captured within the recess 68, but provides an outwardly projecting portion therefrom, i.e., the roof 110 and front wall panel 86 project therefrom to allow a golf club head to project upwardly therefrom. As shown in Figures 1-5, 7-9, 11-15, 29, 53-60, the roof 110 and front wall panel 86 are formed of a thickness of flexible resilient material and have at least one elongated continuous slit-like opening 120 extending vertically through the roof 110 from the floor 108 extending to the front wall panel 86 to the roof 110, but not into the floor 108. The elongated slit-like opening 120 in the roof 110 also abruptly widens into an enlarged area, e.g., a circular aperture 122.
[0167] The elongated slit-like opening 120 includes a cut that extends completely through the thickness of the front wall panel 86 and roof 110, forming cut sides 124 on either side of the cut, such that a closed configuration is defined as when the cut sides 124 generally intersect and an open configuration is defined as when a portion of the sides are spaced apart from one another.
[0168] 15, the arrangement of the rear wall 88 and front wall 86 and the side end walls 92 subdividing the elongated shaped space 94 in a line can include a tongue and groove interlocking type mating relationship, whereby in this example the side end walls 92 include elongated strip-like members having longitudinal edges including tongue edges 126, which in one option can be formed as opposing complementary slotted edges 128, each edge mating with a complementary slotted portion opposite a protruding portion in the rectangular polygonal shaped space. Alternatively, as seen in the figure, the side end walls 92c can be formed as part of the rear wall 88 / 76 / 80.
[0169] The anti-rotation member 96 as seen in Figures 15-26 comprises a channel shaped member (with a truncated angled apex) having a truncated V- or U-shaped cross section of any suitable length, thereby having a base 136 and outwardly flaring arms 138 extending from either end thereof, retaining a space or recess 137 between the arms 138 and adjacent the anti-rotation member 96. In use, the base 136 is attached or connected to at least one side of the side end wall 92 causing the arms 138 to protrude or flare outwardly more within the elongated shaped space 94 for each elongated article 2, e.g., club. In this example, the anti-rotation member 96 may be provided at or near the base, and optionally positioned midway through the height.
[0170] These anti-rotation members 96 hold one end 140, i.e., club grip / handle 141, of the elongated article / club in the recess 137 and the other end (head 144) in the circular slot 122, reducing or preventing rattling, keeping them stationary and allowing easier identification for selection. The base 136 has arms 138 as protrusions made of flexible elastic material (e.g., rubber) such that the arms can resiliently expand to accommodate the grip 141 of the elongated article / club within or between the recess 137 and hold the elongated article 2 firmly in a particular orientation, e.g., outwardly, in the same orientation as the elongated article 2 was originally inserted. When the elongated article 2, e.g., club, is removed from the anti-rotation member 96, the arms return to their original rest shape. Different sizes of members 96 can also be provided to accommodate different elongated articles 2. As seen in Figures 14-26, the anti-rotation members can be formed as a single member with a T-shaped base 136a (Figures 22-24) or can be double-backed with a bridge 136b as in Figures 14-26. The base of any anti-rotation member 96 can be attached to the side wall 92 and / or even to the back / side wall 76, 80, 88 by sliding, clipping, and / or by suitable fasteners such as screws, bolts or rivets, adhesively or non-adhesively. The anti-rotation members 96, which can be double-sided members 96, can be slid down the wall 92 for insertion / removal or replacement (see Figures 15, 15A, 15B). Access for adding, removing or replacing the anti-rotation members 96 can be achieved by accessing the space 94 of the housing 54 via the removable base plate / floor 108, unscrewing to slide them off and on, and reinstalling them.
[0171] Each space 94 of the housing 54 has at least one anti-rotation member 96, 96b, 96c (e.g., Figs. 15-26, 52b), and the other housing 54 (e.g., Figs. 15-26, 52b) has at least two anti-rotation members 96 adjacent to each other at a certain distance that allows a part or a portion of one elongated article 2 (e.g., a club) to be inserted between them, so that the arms 138 are formed and configured with a material that allows them to flex without deformation to receive and hold the elongated article 2 (e.g., a club) therein and between, and allows the arms 138 to return to their relaxed outwardly spreading configuration when the elongated article is removed. A portion of the elongated article is held in the entrance space between the arms 138, but not necessarily completely captured in all of the spaces 137. When the lower end of the elongated article 2 is releasably held by the at least one anti-rotation member 96, the upper end of the article 2 is also releasably loosely held in the top opening 122 of the slit 122. As seen in Fig. 52b, one of the anti-rotation members can be article 96 and the other anti-rotation member is similar but its arms 138 flare out at a different angle, e.g., wider with one arm 138 longer than the other arm 138. Additionally, there can be another anti-rotation member consisting only of an angled L-shaped member whose arms are angled outward toward space 94 and whose base is longer than the other base of the other anti-rotation member. One can also see one proposed example of how walls 92, 88, 86 could be arranged and connected with slotted joints and end reinforcement apertures, for example in wall 92.
[0172] As shown in Figures 15-26d, there is an anti-rotation member for use at the middle of the wall 92 between the housings 54, which includes a base 39 or 136 and a central rib 136a between the back-to-back outwardly extending walls 138, whereby the base 136 and the rib 136a form an H-shaped cross section. There is also an anti-rotation member for use at one end of the wall 92 at the end of the housing 54, which includes a base 39 or 136 and a central rib 136a forming an H-shaped cross section, forming a T-shape with a portion of the H-shape projecting outwardly beyond the base 136. There is also an anti-rotation member 96 for use at one end of the wall 92 at the end of the housing 54, which includes a base 39 or 136 and a central rib 136b forming an H-shaped cross section, forming a T-shape with a portion of the H-shape projecting outwardly beyond the base 136c, the T having a head portion extending lengthwise beyond the base 136 and the end of the outwardly extending walls 138. 16-26, arm 138 extends evenly beyond base 136, 136a, whereby, in FIGS. 15, 52b, arm 138 extends unevenly beyond base 136c.
[0173] In use, each elongated article 2 (e.g., golf club 2) is shaped as an elongated, slender member having an end 140 and has a grip 141, a shaft 142 and a club head 144, whereby when playing golf, the club head 144 may be said to be the bottom end and the grip 141 to be the top end, whereas when storing the elongated article 2 it is oriented upside down, i.e. with the grip 141 at the bottom end and the head 144 at the top end. As shown in FIGS. 27-29 for insertion, each elongated article 2 (e.g., golf club 2) is oriented upside down with the grip 141 facing downwards, then slid horizontally and downwards into the base of the club 2 through the bottom / lower portion of the elongated slit-like opening 120, partially inserted into one lower anti-rotation member 96, then rotated vertically about the bottom 108, rotated upwards about its base through the remaining portion of the upper portion of the elongated slit-like opening 120, and then optionally inserted into another anti-rotation member 96 (i.e., in a portion of the space 137 between the flared arms 138 of adjacent anti-rotation members, causing the flared arms 138 to flare outwardly to receive and releasably hold or grip the club therebetween), before continuing the upward rotation to end up in a substantially vertical orientation with the club head 144 protruding upwards through the enlarged aperture 122 of the roof 110.
[0174] Each anti-rotation member 96 is shaped, configured and attached so that the item 2 can be easily manually pushed into the gap or space 137 between the arms 138 and rotated (by resiliently and flexibly spreading the arms further) and held (by tension, not clipped) between the arms 138 at a minimum at the entrance to the space 137, without having to completely surround it, although in some circumstances the item 2 can be inserted completely into the space 137 between the arms and, in some cases, abutted against the base 136.
[0175] 65 and 66, these figures show the carrier 1 with the side housing removed. In some cases, the housing 54 may be removably attached to the exterior (side) wall of the carrier 1 so that it can be repaired or replaced.
[0176] Figure 66 shows the position of golf club 2 (with housing removed for illustration purposes only) to show how the golf club 2 is held parallel to the side wall of carrier 1. Typically, the only part of the club visible from the outside would be the head protruding above roof 110.
[0177] As seen in Figures 24-26, when removing one elongated item 2 (e.g., golf club 2), it is the same steps but in the reverse order, i.e., first rotate the elongated item 2 (e.g., golf club 2) downward around the base of the elongated shaped space 94, out through the enlarged aperture 122, and through the elongated slit-like opening 120, then continue to rotate the elongated item 2 (e.g., golf club 2) downward around the base through the elongated slit-like opening 120 so as to be out of the anti-rotation member 96, continue to rotate until it hits the end of the elongated slit-like opening 120, and then slide the club grip 141 out of the lower anti-rotation member 96 and out of the bag.
[0178] In summary, as shown in Figs. 53-58 and 61-63, a method for inserting (or removing) and retaining each elongated object 2 (e.g., golf club 2) in one elongated space 94 of one elongated housing 54 is disclosed, which does not use anti-rotation members 96, 96a, 96b, 96c and includes at least the following steps: Here, the method comprises the steps of: e) orienting the lower end 140 of the elongated article 2 in a vertical plane at an angle to the horizontal so as to pass through the lower portion of the slit opening 120 and point inward; f) then positioning said lower end 140 of the elongated article 2 substantially against or adjacent to the floor 108 of the elongated space 94 of the housing 54; g) then moving it vertically about the pivot point at or near the floor 108, causing the remainder of the club to move upward through more of the lower portion of the slit opening 120 above the lowermost portion; h) Thereafter, continuing the pivoting movement of the elongated article 2 upwardly through the slit opening 120 about or near the floor 108 until the top of the elongated article 2 near its apex end 140 is positioned in the widened opening 122, so that the upper portion 144 of the elongated article protrudes upwardly therefrom and the lower portion rests on the floor 108.
[0179] Preferably, the method as given for insertion is reversed to remove the elongated article 2 (eg, a golf club) from the elongated shaped housing 54 .
[0180] Preferably, the method as provided above is adapted for use with anti-rotation members 96, 96a, 96b, 96c removably disposed on at least one wall 92, 76, 80, 88 at least at the lower end of the housing (to prevent rotation about the club axis when the housing and therefore the club heads are closely spaced, and therefore to prevent the clubs from rattling against each other), whereby the steps include: e) orienting the lower end 140 of the elongated article 2 in a vertical plane at an angle to the horizontal so as to pass through the lower portion of the slit opening 120 and point inward; f) then positioning said lower end 140 of the elongated article 2 substantially against or adjacent to the floor 108 of the elongated space 94 of the housing 54; g) then pivoting upwardly about or near the floor 108, thereby preventing rotation of the elongated article about its axis when the anti-rotation member 96 is engaged, thereby positioning the lower portion of the elongated article 2 within the recess 137 of the anti-rotation member 96 by further spreading the walls 138 outward, securely positioning a portion of the elongated article 2 therein; h) Next, continue to rotate the elongated article 2 upwardly about or near the floor 108 through the slit opening 120 and engagement with the other anti-rotation member 96 until the top of the elongated article 2 near its apex end 140 is positioned in the widened opening 122, whereby the upper portion 144 protrudes upwardly therefrom and the lower portion is removably and resiliently retained in the space or recess 137 in the anti-rotation member 96 and rests on the floor 108.
[0181] Removal of the elongated article 2 (e.g., a golf club) involves the same steps but in reverse. The act of initially inserting the article 2 can include the simultaneous act of rotating at or near the floor 108 while being partially inserted into the anti-rotation member 96.
[0182] During this horizontal translation and rotation of the elongated article 2 (e.g., golf club 2) through the elongated slit-like opening 120, the material of the front and roof is of a type that allows the sides 124 of the elongated slit-like opening 120 to start out in a closed configuration (i.e., nearly intersect), then flex flexibly / resilient / hingedly about a portion of the shaft 142, split or flex to open inwardly or outwardly in an open configuration, and then later automatically return to at least approximate the original closed configuration, whereby when the elongated article 2 (e.g., golf club 2) is stored within the elongated shaped space 94, the anti-rotation member 96 resiliently holds the elongated article 2 to maintain each elongated article 2 within one elongated shaped space 94.
[0183] 14, 15, 29, 53-60, the elongated article housing 54 is molded and configured as a non-removable part of the elongated space 94 of the golf carrier assembly 1, i.e., fixedly connected or fastened peripherally disposed about the exterior of the wall support housing member assembly 46. In addition to this fixed peripheral connection, there is the same elongated article housing 54 in the form of the elongated space 94 as part of the portable carrier assembly 56 that is removably attached to the periphery of the exterior recess 68 of the housing 46.
[0184] Each elongated object or piece of equipment (e.g., golf club 2) can be placed in the club habitat or elongated space 94 of the present invention in any order, such as from smallest to largest, so that the club grips 141 are protected from moisture and impact damage, and each elongated space 94 can also have an optional drainage vent at its base (included in the prototype but subsequently removed).
[0185] The portable carrier assembly 56 includes a separate portable carrier housing containing at least one elongated shaped article housing 54 on one or front side in combination with a support stand device 150 located on the opposite or rear side thereof, which support stand device 150 is shaped to be removably latchably received in an exterior recess 68 of the housing assembly 46. For the portable carrier assembly 56, while two housings 54 are shown, it is envisioned that any number of housings 54 may be provided as needed for portability, which may mean, but is not limited to, any number of movable or liftable housings 54 forming a carrying function, for example, two housings 54, three or four housings 54.
[0186] In this example, the portable carrier assembly 56 is designed to allow a player to carry a lightweight, self-supporting portable elongated article 2 (e.g., club) carrier assembly without having to carry all of the elongated articles, e.g., golf clubs - for example, the portable carrier assembly 56 can carry a putter and wedges as well as some accessories such as a ball marker, pitch repairer and towel.
[0187] When terms such as "front" and "rear" are used in relation to the portable carrier assembly 56, "front" in this case is defined as referring to the outwardly facing surface of the portable carrier assembly 56 that faces the user, and "rear" is meant to refer to the rear of the portable carrier assembly 56, i.e., where the support stand device 150 is housed against the side walls 76, 80 of the carrier assembly wall housing 46. This orientation is distinct from with respect to the carrier assembly itself as a whole, where the front is defined as facing the user, or where the door 300 is located, and other relative terms such as rear, height, width, and side are oriented accordingly.
[0188] The overall shape of the body of the portable carrier assembly 56 is similar to the elongated article housing 54, but is thicker in dimension to accommodate and contain the support stand device 150. The elongated article housing 54 of the portable carrier assembly 56 includes at least one or two elongated spaces 94 for removably storing two elongated articles 2 (e.g., golf clubs 2) (e.g., a putter and a wedge) therein. The overall shape is thus a rectangular or prism shape having an overall elongated shape that is a length similar to the length of the golf club shaft 142 with its grip 141.
[0189] Similar to the rest of the elongated article housing 54 disclosed herein above, the elongated article housing 54 includes therein an enclosed accessible structure having an elongated space 94 with its own roof 110 having the same widened area or opening 122 connected to its own elongated slit opening 120, each of which is connected to its own front wall panel 86, and the interior is accessible through any part of the elongated slit opening 120 of the roof and front wall panel 86. At least one anti-rotation member 96 is provided by being affixed to the inside of each elongated housing 54, with its arms projecting outwardly from the inner wall of the elongated space. For example, the anti-rotation member 96 can be located anywhere on the wall of the housing 54 as needed to hold at least a part of the elongated article 2, such as at the lower bottom end of each elongated housing 54 and at the space 94 corresponding to the position of the elongated article 2, such as the grip 141 of a golf club. As shown in FIG. 52b, the shape of the anti-rotation member 96 is not the same as the anti-rotation members 96 of the other housings 54 of the carrier assembly in that the walls or arms 138 are flared outwardly and longer to accommodate different shaped grips 141 on elongated objects.
[0190] The connection between the elongated slit-shaped opening 120 in the front wall 86 and the elongated slit-shaped opening 120 in the roof 110 allows an elongated article 2, such as a golf club, to be slidably received therethrough into the elongated housing 94 and projected upwardly therefrom, allowing a golf club head 144 of the elongated article 2 to project upwardly through the widened opening 122 in the roof 110.
[0191] The support stand apparatus 150 also includes a rear housing 151, which is substantially channel shaped for operative connection by suitable fastening and rotating means 151a, and contains a push / push plate 152, a push-pull elongated member 154, e.g., rod / wire, trunnion 156, and foot member 162. The push plate 152 is a planar shaped member located at the lower end of the housing 46 in use.
[0192] The channel-shaped rear housing 151 includes a top end 180 separated from a bottom end 182 and sides 184, a rear face and a trailing edge 190. It also has a height dimension 192 between the ends 180, 182, a depth / thickness dimension 194 between the faces, and a width dimension 196 between the sides.
[0193] Approximately two-thirds of the depth 194 is taken up by the elongated shaped article housing 54. A support stand device 150 is attached to the rear side of the device 150 when in use with the portable carrier assembly 56 attached to the wall support housing member 46. The golf table device 150 includes a channel shaped housing 151 containing end pivots 164 of two leg members 162 attached to the upper end of the housing. The leg members 162 are sized and configured to be rotatable or deployable from the housing 151 to form a splayed configuration (see Figures 17, 18 and 20) to support the portable carrier assembly 56 and to accommodate the leg members 162 in a parallel configuration (but not necessarily in a single layer) within the channel shaped housing 151 (see Figures 16 and 19).
[0194] As shown in Figures 19 and 20, the top rear surface 158 of the portable carrier assembly 56 (facing the recess 68 of the carrier assembly 1 and facing the front surface) shows a storage box 166-174 suitable for any accessories, such as wedges, ball markers, pitch repairers, etc. A pleated magnetized towel 168 is magnetized for easy attachment to the golf carrier assembly having a metal catch in the towel recess 170 as located in the rear housing 151.
[0195] The portable carrier assembly 56 includes a retention system that allows the portable carrier assembly 56 to be removably attached to a side of the carrier 1, for example, the rear of at least one of the doors 300 in an exterior recess 68 of the carrier housing 49. The latch retention system includes a portable carrier actuator lever handle 178 located in a handle recess 177 on the side of the portable carrier assembly 56 operatively connected to a latch 174 on the side of the portable carrier assembly 56, such that lifting the handle 178 disengages the portable carrier 56 from the latch 174 from the carrier housing 49. A latch 175 is also located on the bottom of the recess 68 in the carrier housing, and a handle recess 177 is located on the front of the portable carrier assembly 56. The latch 175 on the bottom of the recess 68 is removably received in a latch recess beneath the push plate 152. Lifting the handle 178 effectively pops the carrier 56 off the top of the recess 68 and tilts it outward, allowing the carrier 56 to be lifted from the bottom latch engagement. To return the carrier 56 to the recess 68, the bottom of the push plate 152 is positioned over the latch 175 at the base of the recess 68 and either tilted back over the top of the carrier 56 using the lever handle 178, or simply pushed back until the top latch 174 snaps into place.
[0196] 17 and 18 is also disposed on the front surface 158, which includes an elongated recess that protrudes somewhat into one of the elongated spaces 94. The bottom end 182 also includes a push plate 152 including a rear edge (optionally biased) that can be pushed or dropped by pivoting about or near the front edge to support the portable carrier assembly 56 on the base 4 with respect to the leg members 162 via the trunnions 156 and the push plate 152.
[0197] The push plate 152 is a planar rectangular member located at the bottom / lower portion or one end of the housing 151 in use and pivotally mounted along one of the front length edges of said housing 151 forming a movable wedge-shaped gap 152a therebetween, and in use has a lower planar surface having a bottom recess 160 primarily at its front edge for capturing an upwardly directed tab member 161 as seen in FIG. 16 on the floor of the recess 68 which assists in positioning the bottom of the portable carrier assembly 56 when in the rear recess 68 of one of the doors 300, whereby the top of the portable carrier assembly 56 or rear housing 151 thereafter is releasably latched in place by interaction of a push button 178 on one of the doors 300 and a movable latch 174 on the top side edge of the rear housing 151. The bottom surface is also provided with gripping means 153 in the form of a roughened surface, e.g., at least one protruding formation of any suitable shape, pattern or spacing, which is designed to provide a degree of grip when the portable carrier assembly 56 is manipulated and thereafter placed on any substrate, e.g., the ground. The push plate 152 also has feet 162 and an upper planar surface in use facing upwardly towards the push-pull elongated member 154 which contains a push rod retaining clip 155 for retaining and positioning the lower end of the push-pull elongated member 154.
[0198] The push plate 152, when in place within the recess 62 of the golf carrier assembly 1 (legs folded into the housing, pivot gap widest), is pivotally pushed down by the pivot point 161 (gap 152a is formed) and then pivots upward away from the tab members 161 when the portable carrier assembly 56 is removed from the recess 68 to allow removal of the portable carrier assembly 56 from the golf carrier assembly. Thereafter, when resting on a base, the push plate 152 is pivoted down about the pivot point 161, reducing or eliminating the gap 152a, thereby pushing the push-pull elongated members 154 upward to cause the release of the leg members 162 to splay outward, supporting the portable carrier assembly 56 in a rearwardly tilted vertical orientation about three points: the ends of the leg members 162 and the bottom end of the portable carrier assembly 56 body.
[0199] Between some of the habitats (elongated shaped spaces 94) of the inner corners of the housing of the portable carrier assembly 56 is at least one corner indentation 198 which forms a curved abutment surface that allows the user / player's fingers to better grip / hold the portable carrier assembly 56 when simultaneously holding the handle recess 177.
[0200] The portable carrier assembly 56 operatively bundles and rotationally connects the components of the push / foot plate 152, the push-pull elongate members 154, e.g., rods / wires, and the trunnion 156, which when removed from the carrier assembly 1 and the push plate 152 is pushed down by tilting the portable carrier assembly 56, actuates an extended or deployed configuration of the (e.g., aluminum) legs 162 to allow the portable carrier assembly 56 to stand on its own in a leaning configuration. When the push plate 152 is not tilted or rebounded or slammed back (which creates a gap 152a on the underside of the portable carrier housing), the legs or arms fold back into the rear housing 151 as they are in a folded configuration. As can be seen in more detail in Figure 41, the rotational connections between the components of the portable carrier assembly 56 show rotational connections at an angle to the vertical (assuming that the length of the carrier 56 provides the so-called vertical axis), which encompasses free pivotal rotation about a pin and socket combination (although other rotational combinations are possible). As shown in Figure 41, there are four rotational axes on either side of the trunnion: R1, R2, R3, R4.
[0201] The trunnion 156 is operatively connected to the push-pull elongate member 154 and the leg 162 by a trunnion mechanism. The trunnion 156 is shaped as a three-sided member including a central base 156a with angled arms 156b. The trunnion mechanism includes a leg end cap 156c, a push rod end cap 156d, a link arm 156e, (pivot pin 156f and pivot sleeve 156g for the link arm), which are operatively connected to one another.
[0202] The base of the push-pull elongate member 154 includes a configuration as a T-section end member 156h. The T-section 156h (used in an upside-down configuration) has a rounded rod-like head end formed and connected to a rounded base, whereby the base stem (tubular shaped) end is inserted into (captured by) the bottom end of the push-pull elongate member 154 and the rounded head end is rotatably received within a complementary shaped female slot of the clip 155.
[0203] The push rod end cap 156d (e.g., white plastic) is T-shaped with a flared outward shape and includes a head portion, an arm portion, and a body or stem portion. The body portion is attached to the top end of the push-pull elongated member 154, which, along with the head portion, is guided to insert at least partially into the housing tracking slot groove. The arm portion is angled in an outward flared shape with a circumferentially grooved end. The stem portion is tubular and captures the top end of the push-pull elongated member 154.
[0204] Each link arm 156e includes a planar elongate member having a stepped configuration with parallel fixed ring ends, one ring end of link arm 156e rotatably secured to one circumferentially grooved end and the other ring end of link arm 156e rotatably secured to leg end cap 156c by pivot pin 156f.
[0205] The leg end cap 156c is a tubular shaped member having a closed end with a first tubular inner passage sized to slidably receive the upper end of one of the legs 162. The first tubular shaped member also has a second tubular member oriented perpendicular to the first tubular member and the legs 62 and connected and fixed to the top but intermediate of the first tubular member. Another pivot pin rotatably interconnects through the second tubular member and connects the link arm to the push rod end cap 156d of the push-pull elongated member 154. The proximal end of the first tubular member is oriented similarly to the second tubular member, but not entirely, as it is oriented at an angle relative to the lateral direction to match the angle of the outwardly extending angled arms 156b of the trunnion, and includes a lateral slot for rotatably receiving each angled arm 156b therein. The central base 156a of the trunnion is fixed to the housing 151.
[0206] The legs 162 are operably connected to the push-pull elongated member 154 and the push plate 152 by trunnions 156 (as fixed at their base to the rear housing 151) so that movement of the push plate 152 pushes the push-pull elongated member 154 longitudinally, transmitting the movement of the push plate or from the push plate 152 linearly from its base within the clip 155 through the push-pull elongated member 154 to the legs 162, such linear movement also including rotational movement of the base of the push rod (i.e., the T-shaped member 1456h) within the clip 155.
[0207] Pressure from operating the push plate 152 (closing the gap) is initiated linearly (e.g., vertically) from the push-pull elongated member 154 and then translated into a circular motion via pressure from the trunnion 156 via the pivot pin and link arm 156e, causing the legs 162 to rotatably actuate and spread outward by rotating about the trunnion 156. And vice versa, so that when returning the portable carrier assembly 56 to the golf carrier assembly 1, or when the portable carrier assembly 56 is tilted to simply fold the legs 162, the push plate is pivotally rotated relative to the housing to widen the gap and lower the push rod to rotate the legs 162 back to the folded, generally parallel, but spaced apart, configuration.
[0208] The push plates 152 as sides that are pivoted under the bottom end of the portable carrier housing have a wedge-shaped gap 152a therebetween which is at its maximum extent when the arms / legs 162 are in a folded configuration, so-called relaxed position or non-extended state, within the rear housing 151, and the gap 152a is at its minimum extent pivoted outward from the rear housing when the arms / legs are in an unfolded configuration or extended state.
[0209] When folded, the trunnion mechanism, legs 162 and push-pull elongate members 154 are substantially contained within the housing 151 of the portable carrier assembly 56. A portion of the mechanism, i.e., the trunnion mechanism 162, protrudes outwardly beyond the thickness of the portable carrier assembly 56, but this protrusion can be received in a trunnion recess 157 provided in the rear wall at a suitable location in one of the exterior recesses 68 at the rear of the door 300.
[0210] The legs 162 may also have guide slots that allow them to be positioned toward the bottom within the housing 151, which are used when folding the legs back into the housing 151. The legs are a length that is shorter than the length of the push-pull elongate members 154, or are set back from the push plate, so that the portable carrier assembly 56 can be tilted as needed.
[0211] The push rod end cap 156d is substantially slidably guided within a separate guide slot in the rear housing and is provided with a further slot for receiving a magnetic towel.
[0212] The area of the push plate 152 is sized to match the area of the end of the portable carrier assembly 56, with the gap 152a at its maximum extent facing the rear of the portable carrier assembly 56. The elongated housing 54 of the carrier assembly 1 or portable carrier assembly 56 and their spaces 94 may be internally sized differently for the extent of the housing 151 at the rear for the longer elongated item, e.g., club 2.
[0213] Rotating the push plate 152 pushes the rod 154, which in turn pushes and rotates one end of the link arm 156e, which is fixed in position so that it rotates only relative to the trunnion 156 by its other end, causing the leg 162 to pivotally rotate thereon relative to the fixed position trunnion 156.
[0214] Push rod end cap 156d is substantially T-shaped with an outwardly flared pivoting end connection to the lower end of link arm 156e and the other end is tubular for capturing the lower end of push-pull elongate member 154. Pivoting clip 155 is T-shaped with a stem and a head, the head being held in place by push plate 152 but adapted to allow vertical pivoting of the head in a horizontal plane relative to clip 155 while transmitting vertical upward translational motion to the push rod 154 which pushes against it.
[0215] The push rod end cap 156d contains a one-ended tubular shape shaped to capture one end of the push-pull elongate member 154 therein and has one angled vertical pivot connection for the upper end of the link arm 156e and a second pivot connection to one side of the trunnion base 156. The push rod end cap 156d provides an outwardly splayed diagonal vertical rotation. The link arms 156e provide spaced transmission of the angled vertical rotation from the push rod 154 to each top end of each of the arms 162.
[0216] The leg end caps 156c provide angular rotation transmitted from each link arm 156e at similar rotation angles, but spaced apart from each other, in combination with the angled vertical rotation about the trunnion base 156. The push rod end caps 156d provide splayed angular vertical rotation. The rear housing 151 is shaped to substantially house the support stand apparatus 150 therein in a folded configuration.
[0217] Carrier Storage System 60 - See Figures 6, 8-13, 15-27, 29. The carrier storage system includes an interior storage cavity system that includes an upper small compartment system 72 and a lower large compartment system 74, and can be configured in many different storage configurations for multiple applications.
[0218] As seen in Figures 6-13, the top compartment system 72 contains a separate housing to the wall housing 46, including a housing wall 199 and floor containing a lid access storage system containing a first lid 200 (e.g., a clear plastic member for direct viewing of a scorecard held below) pivotally attached at its upper edge (hinged at hinge 220) to a first top compartment 202, and a second lid 204 pivotally attached below, above a second top compartment 206 but attached at the same pivot point 220. The top lid 200 has a bottom end tab portion 209 that extends beyond the second lid 204 and onto a front horizontal finger access recess to allow selective lifting of the first lid 200 relative to the second lid 204. The orientation of the lids 200, 204 are both parallel to one another and angled, for example 30 degrees from horizontal, between a horizontal and vertical plane to face forward or toward the user and angled upward away from the user.
[0219] The housing wall 199 of the upper compartment 72 is aligned with the left and right side walls 76, 80 and rear wall 78 of the wall supporting housing member 46, thereby allowing the elongated article or golf club housing member 54 to project outwardly therefrom, thereby allowing each elongated article 2, e.g., a golf club head, to project upwardly from the carrier assembly 1 thereat - see, e.g., Figures 12 and 27. Note that the rear of the wall 199 is not angled forward (towards the front or user) as are the lids 200, 204, but is nonetheless a sloped or angled wall.
[0220] The overall shape of the carrier assembly, including the upper small compartment system 72 and the lower large compartment system 74, means that the handle 6 does not protrude beyond the rear wall and is angled or sloped at the same angled plane as the angle of the top lid 200.
[0221] As can be seen, the upper compartment system 72 is generally shaped as a wedge-shaped storage volume having an upper exterior surface that slopes from the rear face 12 to the front face 10 .
[0222] The first top section 202 (see Figs. 6, 8, 9) is located above the second top section 206 and is formed as a planar thin space 208 for storing planar items such as scorecards having a base member 210 and side walls 212. The base member 210 has a scorecard clip 214 mounted thereon and a writing implement storage groove 216 located on one side of the base member 210. The base member 210 also includes an end lip 218 located at the front end, which is useful for preventing planar items on the base member 210 from falling off and for easy holding with the fingers. The end lip 218 also has a drainage slot formed as a break in the wall of the end lip 218. Below the end lip 218 is an open front slot 217 located on the outside and running from side to side, which can also be used to loosely hold an elongated accessory therein, such as a writing implement.
[0223] The second upper compartment 206 is located immediately below the first upper compartment 202 such that the base member 210 of the first upper compartment 202 forms the second lid 204 of the second upper compartment 206. As seen in Figures 6, 8 and 9, the first lid 200 and the second lid 204 are pivoted or hinged at the same pivot point by a friction hinge (bistable hinge or soft close) 220 at the upper rear end as seen in Figures 8-13, 37 and 38 of the upper compartment system 72 just forward of the handle aperture 7. The second upper compartment 206 is shown in Figures 9-13 as a perimeter-bound enclosure volume 222 having four planar walls joined together with a compartment floor 224 forming the roof of the lower compartment system. The walls and floor have an inner surface 228, with side walls 230, a rear wall 232 and a front wall 234.
[0224] One side wall 222 includes a seat 240 extending between the rear wall 232 and the front wall 234 and spaced therein sufficient to accommodate a line of downwardly spaced cylindrical recesses 238 for removably receiving (friction-fitting) a tee member 244. The other side wall 230 includes a larger seat 242 between the rear wall 232 and the front wall 234 and has aligned open-sided slots 246 (of a width corresponding to the diameter of a golf ball) at the ends thereof, downwardly to a line of abutment at each slot 246, for receiving a golf ball therein. Between the seats 240, 242 are spaces formed as two storage pockets 250 (e.g., generally trapezoidal rear and front pockets) having a width dimension between the seats 240, 242 for storing pocket items. Rear wall 232 has a flexible or stretchable net structure 254 corner-secured by clips 256 but spaced therefrom against inner surface 228 to form a generally planar storage space therebetween for suitable items. At the bottom of net 254 is net clip 256. Base 240 is narrower than base 242, and together they are much less than the width of pocket 250.
[0225] The lower large compartment system 74 is a centralized storage system for storing a portion of the carrier storage system 60, as shown in Figures 6, 27 and 29. The lower large compartment system 74 includes a cavity 70 formed generally U-shaped in cross section, a roof 260 (or floor 224 from above), a wall-supported housing system 46 having a floor assembly 48, the walls of which provide a front opening 71 accessible by a movably mounted door assembly 52.
[0226] The following is one option for a carrier assembly 1, 56 without anti-rotation members that includes an elongated body for holding or storing at least one elongated article 2 (e.g., a golf club) oriented in an upright orientation in use. The elongated body includes a wall support housing assembly 46 that includes sidewalls 76, 80 having a thickness between an inner surface 66 and an outer surface 64 having an upper end and a lower end that includes a floor assembly 48, the sidewalls 76, 80 having a shape that defines an interior storage cavity therebetween and connectively to the outside of the sidewalls 76, 80. The carrier assembly includes at least one elongated housing 54 having a front wall 86, a rear wall 76, 80, 88, a sidewall 92, a floor 108, and in the form of an elongated space 94 of a volumetric shape and configuration capable of storing at least one elongated article 2 therein in use. The front wall 86 includes a planar member including at least one elongated slit-like opening 120 extending continuously from at least a portion of the front wall 86, and the space 94 is configured to removably receive a portion of the elongated shaped article 2 so that the elongated article 2 can be held therein. At least one elongated article 2 can be horizontally and rotationally inserted or removed from the elongated shaped space 94 through the elongated slit-like opening 120, which is flexibly divided in time to allow this insertion and to allow the elongated article 2 to be vertically removably held therein. The interior side between the housing 46 and the side walls 76, 80 is an interior storage space including an upper small storage space and a lower large storage space, the upper small storage space including an upper planar space and a lower wedge-shaped space, and the lower large storage space including at least one shelf accessed by at least one door. The openings 122 in the roof 110, with or without anti-rotation members, help retain elongated items within the spaces 94 of each housing 54. Additionally, this option can also encompass yet another option for the carriers 1, 56 without upper and lower storage areas.
[0227] The door assembly 52 includes at least one door 300 located on the front surface 10 of the golf carrier assembly 1, an elongated side hinge 302, and a door well. In this example, the two doors 300 are each formed with an elongated body shape having a generally L-shaped cross section, and each is hinged to the housing assembly 46 by their own elongated vertical side hinges 302.
[0228] The elongated body of each door 300 has a shape that includes upper and lower edges 310, 312, a hinge side edge 314 and a non-hinged side edge 316 that form a height distance therebetween, such that the elongated body has an outer surface 320 and an inner surface 322. An L-shaped cross-section having a hinge arm portion 326 and a distal arm portion 328 defines an inner space 332 for mounting a door storage between the arm portions 326, 328. The hinge side edge 314 is attached to one side pillar 71a on each side of the opening 71 by a side hinge 302.
[0229] The door assembly 52 includes a door latch mechanism which in this example includes an operating pivot lever member 318 disposed in a recess 319 in one door 300 and a lever landing member 324 disposed in another recess 325 in the other door 300, whereby the lever 318 is articulated (has an arm that articulates downward) and end-pivoted or hinged to or near the door edge and is hinged so as to be extendable up to the landing member 324 to lock the door 300. One door has a pivoting lever member 318 with a distal latch end and the other door has a lever landing member 324 with a latch in an assembled configuration such that when the door is closed, this allows the pivoting lever member 318 to be extended by an articulated arm, extending its latch over the latch or hook of the lever landing member 324 and latching or interlocking together, folding the lever and arm together, so that when it is desired to open the door 300, the pivoting lever member 318 is levered and rotated out of latch engagement extending the lever and arm and allowing the door to be opened.
[0230] The door compartment includes door pockets 336 that include open pockets with recessed front walls, for example, four door pockets 336 on each interior surface 322 that are oriented vertically spaced apart from one another.
[0231] An exterior surface 320 of one door 300 has a portion of an elongated article housing 54 disposed thereon as a non-removable part of the golf carrier assembly, and an exterior surface 320 of the other door 300 has an exterior recess 68 adapted and configured to removably receive a removable housing of a portable carrier assembly 56.
[0232] 15, 23 and 38 in this example extends the distance of the entire side edge 314 between the top edge 310 and the bottom edge 312 and includes a leaf 304, a knuckle 306 and a hinge pin 308 from each side from the side edge 314 to the pillar 71a. As shown in FIG. 22, each door hinge 302 works with the door in combination with a door opening restraint mechanism 340 to prevent the door from opening too far outwardly towards the elongated article housing 54 attached to the housing assembly 46, i.e., to prevent the door from abutting the pillar 71a and the elongated article housing 54. The door opening restraint mechanism 340 includes a protrusion located at the top edge of the pillar 71a that is shaped to provide an abutment for the door to angle away from the pillar 71a and the elongated article housing 54.
[0233] The use of doors 300 with pockets 336 rather than zippers is intended to provide additional storage with easy visibility and access to all stored tools. Another major advantage of these doors 300 is that they can be opened, secured, and locked in the center (see item 450 in Figs. 15 and 16). As seen in Fig. 23, the door hinge 302 is shaped to fit the clean lines of the door (not to interfere with door storage) and provide strength and robustness for use in all weather conditions, and includes three components, namely, leaf 304, knuckle 306, and hinge pin 308, as seen in Fig. 23. The leaf 304 is an elongated shaped plate located on either side of the centrally located knuckle 306. The knuckle 306 includes interlocking finger portions extending from each door 300 on opposite sides of the hinge that provide a vertically aligned aperture for the hinge pin 308, e.g., a stainless steel metal bar. Each hinge 302 allows each door 300 to rotate to its maximum extent, for example approximately 180 degrees.
[0234] The lower large compartment system 74 for storing a portion of the carrier storage system 60 includes another portion of the carrier storage system 60, as shown in Figures 6, 27, and 29. This portion includes a plurality of spaced apart fixed shelves 342 and at least one removable or slidable tray member 344 (see Figure 29) that is disposed within the storage cavity and is edge-slidably attached to track members that are separately or integrally attached to the inner surface of the sidewall of the cavity 60. Each storage tray / shelf 342, 344 includes a planar floor having a perimeter wall 346, a drainage hole 350 (see Figure 29), and fastening holes 352 in the inner surface of the sidewall. In this example, there are three spaced apart tray members between the roof (i.e., the base of the second upper compartment) and the floor 356 (the roof of the floor assembly 358).
[0235] The floor housing 48, which provides both a floor as a base for the lower compartment system 74 and a roof for the floor assembly 48, extends or protrudes beyond the front of the storage cavity with a shelf that allows a door 300, which has its own storage system, to close and be flush in appearance with the protruding front edge of the floor or roof of the floor assembly 48.
[0236] In yet another related embodiment, the invention can include a carrier assembly 1, 56 that is an elongated body for holding or housing at least one elongated article oriented in an upright orientation in use. The elongated body includes a wall support housing assembly 46 that includes a sidewall 76, 80 having a thickness between an inner surface 66 and an outer surface 64 having upper and lower ends that include a floor assembly 48.
[0237] The side walls 76, 80 are shaped to define an interior storage cavity therebetween and connectively to the exterior of the side walls 76, 80 includes at least one elongated housing 54 in the form of an elongated space 94 having a front wall 86, a side wall 92, and a floor 108, the front wall 86 including a planar member including at least one elongated slit-like opening 120 extending continuously from at least a portion of the front wall 86.
[0238] The space 94 is configured to removably receive a portion of an elongated article such that the elongated article can be held therein. At least one elongated article can be inserted or removed from the elongated space 94 horizontally and rotationally through an elongated slit-like opening 120 that is flexibly divided in time to allow this insertion and to allow the elongated article to be vertically removably held therein.
[0239] The interior side between the housing 46 and side walls 76, 80 is an interior storage space including an upper small storage space and a lower large storage space, the upper small storage space including an upper flat space and a lower wedge-shaped space, and the lower large storage space including at least one shelf accessed by at least one door.
[0240] Floor Assembly 48 Figures 1-3, 5-7 The floor assembly 48 comprises a generally horizontally oriented, planar box-like housing including a roof member 358 supported and connected by support walls 359, and a floor 360, forming a completely enclosed housing space therein in the shape of a U with lateral outwardly directed wings 361. The floor 360 is a planar member that abuts the base 4 during use. The roof member 358 includes planar members that extend beyond the walls 359 to form a U-shaped peripheral overhanging strip. The wings 361 are concave closed spatial volumes connected upwardly to some (i.e., two on each side) of the rear elongated shaped spaces 94 to allow a longer elongated article 2 or golf club to be locked downwardly therein.
[0241] The floor assembly 48 is sized in area and depth to fit within the bed of a golf cart, allowing it to be placed in place and secured with straps.
[0242] The overhanging portion of the roof 358 also provides an elongated bottom handle recess 364. The support wall 360 includes a wheel housing recess space 362 for at least a portion of a first rotational device 366 (e.g., at least one front wheel) of the trundler device 58 to be at least partially received therein and able to rotate therethrough and ready for use.
[0243] The ends of the wall 359 meet the floor 360 in such a way that the floor 360 is recessed inwards therefrom, for example by 2-3 mm. The overhang also encompasses the bottom / floor 356 / 108 of the lower compartments 70, 68 and of the housing 54 for elongated shaped articles arranged therearound.
[0244] accessories Twist lock 708 (see Figs. 59, 60) is used as needed to removably hang and / or attach any suitable accessory, such as, for example, a cup holder 710 as seen in Fig. 60 38 or an umbrella holder 712 as seen in Fig. 3. Twist lock 708 contains a male to female insert or pull action combined with a twist or turn for locking or unlocking, thereby containing a female part 714 and a male part 716. In this example, female part 714 contains a female socket part that can be provided at any suitable or convenient location within the wall housing assembly 46 of the carrier assembly, and male part 716 can be provided on the outside of the accessory (see Fig. 59), or vice versa.
[0245] Other accessories include a means of transportation including a wheeled assembly, and a trundler device that can include its own separate carrier assembly with shoulder strap. Further optional accessories include a canvas rain bag, lunch box, umbrella, canvas or leather hat for the carrier, towel, pitch repair kit, water bottle, extra handles, straps, hooks for removably attaching to the rear of the carrier, removably attachable to the golf cart, trundler, and carrying and removably attaching accessories (e.g. backpacks) via hooks on brackets attached to the rear of the carrier. By locating the housing on the outer side of the carrier assembly, the golf clubs can be easily removed from the carrier assembly whether the carrier assembly is freestanding or supported by the trundler.
[0246] The apparatus also includes a mobile device holder socket 720 for removably attaching a mobile phone or camera holder. This socket can be located anywhere convenient on the assembly 1, for example behind or below the handle 6 but above the support member 62 (see Figs. 59+, 60).
[0247] Yet other options include providing illumination such as an LED that can be fixed and / or portable and serve as a flashlight in a detachable portion.

[0250] Transform Throughout this specification, the word "comprise" and variations of that word, such as "comprising", "comprises", etc., are not intended to exclude other additional elements, components, integers or steps.
[0251] The anti-rotation members 96 are made of a flexible but resilient material (e.g., rubber, plastic, or the like) that allows for repeated flexing, holding or gripping, and automatic return to the original shape. The gripping is not by a clip, although this action may be combined if desired. The combination of the elongated article 2 being held by the anti-rotation members 96, resting on the floor 108 of the housing 54, and projecting upward through the hole 122 serves to provide adequate restraint for the elongated article to be held therein, significantly reducing so-called wobble. Each space 94 in volume is larger than the space occupied by the elongated article 2 and the anti-rotation members 96, allowing for insertion, removal, and retention therein.
[0252] The front wall 86 of the housing 54 is formed from a flexible material so that it can be repeatedly flexed and returned to its original shape.
[0253] The housings of carrier assembly 1 and portable carrier assembly 56 are formed of a polymer composite material suitable for allowing molding into shapes for everyday use of elongated objects that are inserted and retrieved and moved during transport, and having some degree of water and impact resistance. In yet another alternative, the housings can be formed of a woven or fabric, with any joints formed, bonded or connected by threading, zippers, adhesives, or heat.
[0254] Polymer composites are multiphase materials in which reinforcing fillers are integrated with a polymer matrix, resulting in synergistic mechanical properties not achievable by either component alone.
[0255] Alternatively, the small upper compartment can be formed as an integral part of the entire housing 46, or alternatively, as a removable part. The carrier 1 and carrier assembly 56 can be formed of any suitable material having at least some degree of water resistance. The shape of the anti-rotation member 96 need not be exactly as shown, i.e., the shape of the channels, spaces and arms 138 can be varied to accommodate the particular shape and size of the elongated article 2 to be held therein (see FIG. 52b). Other attachments can also be used to cooperate with the anti-rotation member, including anti-rotation spacers 96c.
[0256] The trundler device can be made removable from the rear of the golf carrier, and there can also be smaller versions that include wheels that can be stored in the base.
[0257] The portable carrier assembly 56 is portable and can stand on its own by extending the legs 162 from the support stand apparatus 150, which means that the golfer does not need to carry all of his clubs and can therefore easily retrieve just any two clubs, for example a putter and a wedge. It also reduces the need to pick up clubs that have fallen on the ground and reduces the risk of losing a club. The portable carrier assembly 56 is also very easy to remove from the carrier with the quick release feature.
[0258] As shown in the figures (e.g., Figs. 1-5, 7, 9, 11-26, 29, 30-33, 53-60), each elongated shaped housing 54 includes elongated, planar, substantially spaced apart shapes 94 to accommodate at least one club therein. The shape of the housing 54 can be any shape so long as at least one club can be inserted or removed therefrom. For example, some shapes 94 include rectangular, cuboid or prismatic shaped members (e.g., long and thin) that define enclosed, elongated, planar spaces 94 located outside the outer surfaces 64 of the left and right outer walls 76, 80 of the wall-supported housing member 46. The shape, spacing and number of anti-rotation members 96, 96a, 96b and 96c can be varied to accommodate mounting requirements to any wall 92, 88, 76, 80, such as different lengths and numbers on the wall, symmetrical or not, and different angles or shapes of curvature of arms 138, at least one arm, combined with spacer 96c or not, and different lengths of base 136, and various mounting methods (see, e.g., examples in Figures 14-26, 52b).
[0259] The lower large compartment system 74 for storage as part of the carrier storage system 60 is a centralized storage system that includes shelves that are movable and adjustable both vertically and horizontally, and serve to create a well-organized, easily visible, and easily managed walk-in wardrobe style space for the storage of player's equipment that is much more convenient to use than the standard handbag style with zippered side compartments used on all golf bags. These shelves or horizontal spaces of the present invention are much more convenient to use, much easier to manage (e.g. you can have separate shelves for valuables, wet equipment, food, drinks, etc.) and retrieve, and are better for use in all weather conditions because of the ventilation and drainage holes.
[0260] Any number and configuration of shelves, drawers, and / or trays are possible, which may be fixed, adjustable, or interchangeable. In this example, the shelves may include trays or drawers that are fixed or movable, thereby providing five horizontal vertically spaced spaces in this example, and the door storage provides four vertically spaced pockets 336.
[0261] The door 300 is one example of a means of accessing the lower compartment system 74 and may have different forms of movable attachment to the housing (e.g., elongated hinges, butt hinges, ball bearing hinges, barrel hinges, concealed hinges, knife hinges, piano hinges, pivoting hinges, living hinges, etc.), although other means are possible, such as, for example, a simple flap, a curtain, a roller blind (vertical or horizontal), a folding flap, a bi-fold, etc., with or without a door pocket 336.
[0262] The side walls 92 located within the space 94 of the housing 54 are shown to be continuous elongated walls, but may also be formed as spaced wall portions providing at least one space, gap or aperture therebetween (see FIG. 63), useful for air circulation and / or allowing a protruding portion of an elongated article, such as the head of a tennis racquet, to protrude laterally therethrough. Retention of each elongated article 2 by either at least one anti-rotation member 96 and / or enlarged opening 122, in combination with, but not necessarily all of, the shape of the space 94 of each housing 54 and the resiliency of the front wall 86, is sufficient to retain each elongated article not tightly, but "generally loosely," at least sufficient to reduce substantial movement / wobbling of the elongated article 2, yet permit easy manual removal or insertion through the slits 120.
[0263] One option for removably retaining each elongated article 2 on the carrier or portable carrier assembly may even be to not use anti-rotation members 96 (see fifth aspect and claim 5), and in another option, to not use upper and lower storage areas, whereby each elongated article 2, e.g. clubs, is held in place by the narrowness of the space 94 within each housing 54 and the size / diameter of the openings / holes 122 in the rubber roof 110 extending from the front wall 86.
[0264] Of course, it will be understood that while the foregoing are given as illustrative examples of the invention, all modifications and variations which would be apparent to those skilled in the art, as well as other modifications and variations, are deemed to be within the broad scope and scope of the invention as hereinbefore described.
[0265] The push plate 152 and push rod member 154 of the portable carrier assembly 56 can be made of similar materials and can be of similar shapes, e.g., aluminum tubular members, although other materials and combinations are possible as well, such as plastic, steel or stainless steel members, square cross-sections, etc. The size, spacing and number of anti-rotation members 96, 96a, 96b, 96c can be varied to suit the size of the elongated member 2 and / or housing 54. For example, there can be no anti-rotation members or there can simply be one or more on any of the walls 92, 76, 80, 88 as desired.
[0266] It will also be understood that if any product, method, or process as described or claimed herein is sold incomplete, as individual components, or as a "kit of parts," such uses fall within the scope of the invention.
[0267] These and other features and characteristics of the present invention, as well as the method of operation and function of its associated elements of structure, combination of parts and economies of manufacture, will become more apparent from a consideration of the following description taken in conjunction with the accompanying drawings, all of which form a part of this specification, and in which like numerals indicate corresponding parts in the various views.
[0268] All or at least some of the components of the carrier assembly and / or the portable carrier assembly can be or are at least water resistant to some degree, although in some cases waterproofing may be achieved. Any portion or component of the housing 54, such as door pockets, trays, shelves, drawers, and spaces 94, may be provided with drainage holes or holes of any suitable shape and pattern.
[0269] FIG. 64 shows a carrier assembly and / or portable carrier assembly adapted for use with a different elongated article 2, i.e., for example, a tennis racquet, whereby the side or end walls 92 of each space 94 of each housing are formed with gaps, apertures or slits to accommodate the wide racquet striking end, in combination with nesting or overlapping across multiple housings 54.
[0270] It is also to be understood that the specific devices illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and described in the following specification, are simply exemplary embodiments of the invention, and therefore specific dimensions and other physical characteristics relating to the embodiments disclosed herein are not to be considered as limiting.
