[0174] In step 4a, a glass reactor (R1) under nitrogen gas was charged with compound 4a (100.0 g, 425 mmol, 1.0 equiv., E / Z 2:1 ratio) and MTBE (400 mL, 4V) to obtain a solution. The internal temperature was adjusted to 25° C. A second glass reactor (R2) was charged with solid 1,1-carbonylimidazole (88.0 g, 532 mmol, 1.25 equiv.) and MTBE (400 mL, 4V) to produce a slurry. The contents of R2 were vacuum transferred in portions to R1 to keep the Ti below 35° C. (exotherm observed, significant off-gassing) and the reaction was left stirring at 25° C. overnight. The reaction was sampled for IPC (target (HPLC): compound 4a ≦1.0% area, result: 0% area, conforms). Water (500 mL, 5 V) was added and the phases were separated. The organic phase containing compound 5a was washed with citric acid (500 mL, 5 V, 5 wt % in water) followed by water (500 mL, 5 V). The organic phase was filtered (solids were discarded). The batch was split into two equal parts by mass (2×44 g based on maximum theoretical yield). Using distillation, the organic phase containing compound 5a was concentrated to 4 V. Continuous distillation was then used to achieve MTBE<1 wt %. A solvent exchange was performed from MTBE (176 mL, 4 V) to t-AmOH (176 mL, 4 V) until 40° C. In step 5a″, the temperature was adjusted to 40° C. and hydroxylamine (17.6 mL, 288 mmol, 1.4 equiv., 50 wt % in water) was charged over 6 h. The reaction was stirred for 16 h. The reaction was sampled for IPC (target (HPLC): compound 5a≦1.0% area, result: 0% area, conforms). The reaction mixture was cooled to 25° C. and seeds of compound 6a were added (0.2 g, 0.5 wt %) and the reaction mixture was maintained for 0.5 h to form a seed bed. The mixture was grown on a 1000 ml bed. Heptane (440 mL, 10 V) was charged over 3 h and stirred for 30 min. The temperature was adjusted to 0° C. over 3 h and stirred overnight. The slurry was filtered and the cake was washed three times with heptane (44 mL, 1 V). The solid was dried at 23° C. to give 43.9 g of white solid compound 6a (85% corrected yield calculated for half of the initial batch).
