Description

[Technical Field]

[0001] The present invention relates to article retention devices, article carriers, and blanks for forming article retention devices. More specifically, but not exclusively, the present invention relates to top-grip type carriers having one or more apertures for receiving and retaining articles. [Background technology]

[0002] In the packaging art, it is known to provide cartons for carrying multiple items. Cartons are well known in the art and serve to transport, store, and provide access to groups of items for consumption by consumers. Due to cost and environmental considerations, such cartons or carriers should be made from as little material as possible, minimizing material waste. Additionally, consideration should be given to the strength of the carton and its suitability for holding and transporting heavy items. It is desirable for the contents of the carton to remain secure within the carton.

[0003] A top-gripping article carrier has an aperture formed in a panel of the carrier and a tab punched through the panel and positioned around the aperture. When an article is received in the aperture, the tab moves out of the plane of the panel and engages the article around a flange or edge of the article. The tab 52 is defined in part by a pair of spaced-apart second radial cut lines 59. Each of the pair of second radial cut lines 59 extends from aperture A4 to the hinge connection 13 between the first reinforcement panel 12 and the third joint panel 14.

[0081] Each of teeth 50a, 50b, 50c and tab 52 includes an engaging or load-bearing edge E2, which may be linear and define a portion of aperture A4. When carrier 90 is carried by handle structure H (described below), gravity transfers a load to carrier 90 via load-bearing edge E2.

[0082] Each of the teeth 50a, 50c includes a second height dimension L2 measured between the free or engaging edge E1 and the hinge connection 53, 57 to the main panel 12. The second height dimension L2 is less than the first height dimension L1 (L2 <L1)。

[0083] Each of the teeth 50a, 50b, and 50c includes a second angular dimension θ2 measured between a pair of cut lines 51 / 51, 51 / 59, and 59 / 59 that define the side edges of the teeth 50a, 50b, and 50c. The second angular dimension θ2 is less than the first angular dimension θ1 (θ2<θ1). The second angular dimension θ2 may be 45°.

[0084] The blank 10 includes a handle structure H, which may include at least one finger opening. In the illustrated embodiment, a pair of finger openings are included. Each finger opening is defined, at least in part, by one or more handle tabs 60 stamped from or defined within the main panel 18. Each handle tab 60 is hingedly connected to the main panel 18 by a hinge connection in the form of a fold line 61. In the illustrated embodiment, each finger opening includes a pair of handle tabs 60, with the fold line 61 of one of the pair of handle tabs 60 being divergently positioned relative to the fold line 61 of the other of the pair of handle tabs 60. The pair of finger openings may be oriented opposite each other.

[0085] Each finger opening is centrally located between a group of four article retaining structures RT1, RT2.

[0086] Each of the first and second reinforcement panels 12, 24 includes at least one finger aperture A1, and in the illustrated embodiment, each of the first and second reinforcement panels 12, 24 includes two finger apertures A1. Each finger aperture A1 is constructed and arranged to be vertically aligned with a finger opening in the main panel 18.

[0087] The blank 10 can be folded into a flat configuration by folding the first reinforcement panel 12 and the third joint panel 14 about fold line 15 so that the third joint panel 14 is in face-to-face relationship with the first joint panel 16 and the first reinforcement panel 12 is in face-to-face relationship with a portion of the main panel 18. The second reinforcement panel 24 and the fourth joint panel 22 are folded about fold line 21 so that the fourth joint panel 22 is in face-to-face relationship with the second joint panel 20 and the second reinforcement panel 24 is in face-to-face relationship with a second portion of the main panel 18. A portion of the second reinforcement panel 24 may overlap or overlie a portion of the first reinforcement panel 12.

[0088] The main panel 18 forms the upper engagement panel of the article carrier 90 shown in Figure 2, and the first and second reinforcing panels 12, 24 form the lower engagement panels.

[0089] The carrier 90 in its flat folded configuration can be applied to a group of articles B in their flat configuration.

[0090] The main panel 18, along with the first and second reinforcing panels 12, 24, can be lowered relative to the group of articles B.

[0091] Each article retention structure RT1, RT2 in the upper engagement panel 18 and lower engagement panel 12 / 24 of the blank 10 is aligned with each article B in the group. A portion of article B passes through a respective one of the first and second reinforcing panels 12, 24 and through the main panel 18. The toothed regions of the first and second reinforcing panels 12, 24 and main panel 18 disposed around each article retention structure RT1, RT2 can be folded out of their respective planes.

[0092] The engaging edges of the teeth or tabs 40, 50a, 50b, 50c, 52 engage under the protrusions. The protrusions are disposed around the neck of the item B. If the item B is a bottle, the protrusions may be provided by an end closure or cap. In this manner, the engaging edges grip or hold the item B, preventing or inhibiting unintentional separation of the item B from the upper engagement panel 18, 12 / 24 and the lower engagement panel 18.

[0093] The first and second joint panels 16, 20 automatically fold as a result of receiving item B in the upper engagement panel 18. The tab 52 of the second item retaining structure RT2 of the upper engagement panel 18 is moved out of the plane of the upper engagement panel 18 by item B when item B is received in the item retaining structure RT2.

[0094] The third and fourth joint panels 14, 22 automatically fold as a result of receiving item B in the lower engagement panel 12 / 24. The tab 52 of the second item retention structure RT2 of the lower engagement panel 12 / 24 is moved out of the plane of the lower engagement panel 12 / 24 when item B is received in the item retention structure RT2.

[0095] The tab 52 of the second item retention structure RT2 of the lower engagement panel 12 / 24 can facilitate alignment of the item retention structures RT1, RT2 in the lower engagement panel 12 / 24 with the item retention structure RT2 in the upper engagement panel 18 when the joint panels 14, 16, 20, 22 are folded relative to the upper engagement panel 18 and the lower engagement panel 12 / 24.

[0096] Figure 2 shows a package containing article carrier 90 and article group B. Figure 2B shows the carrier with teeth 50a, 50b, 50c and tab 52 on upper engagement panel 18 folded outward to reveal teeth 40 on lower engagement panel 12 / 24. Teeth 40 are folded about fold line 43 to partially enclose article B.

[0097] In the illustrated embodiment, the upper or external teeth 50a, 50b, 50c and tabs 52 are circumferentially offset relative to the lower or internal teeth 40. The radial cut lines 45 between the lower or internal teeth 40 are positioned to be below or behind the upper teeth or tabs 50a, 50c, 52, rather than coinciding with the cut lines 51, 59 that separate the upper teeth or tabs 50a, 50c, 52. In this manner, each internal tooth 40 overlaps at least two external teeth or tabs 50a, 50c, 52.

[0098] Each internal tooth 40 may overlap or contact three or more of the external teeth 50 a, 50 c or tabs 52 .

[0099] The inner hinge connection 43 may form a ridge on the inner tooth 40. The inner hinge connection 43 or ridge may contact the inner surface of any of the outer teeth 50a, 50b, 50c and the tab 52.

[0100] The inner hinge connection 43 is positioned so that it is circumferentially or angularly offset relative to the cut lines 51, 59 that separate the upper teeth or tabs 50a, 50c, 52 from one another.

In this manner, each tooth 640 is folded about the radial hinges 643a / 643b.

[0185] FIG. 8 shows an article retention structure RT10 substantially similar in structure to the second article retention structure RT5′ shown in FIG. 7B , configured for use with a blank having a second panel 714 hingedly connected to a side or end edge of a main panel 712 by a hinge connection in the form of a fold line 713, which blank can have a shape substantially similar to that shown in FIGS. 1 , 3 , and 4 . In the article retention structure RT10, one of the teeth 752 is stamped out of the main panel 712, i.e., provided by the material forming the main panel 712, and the tooth 752 is integral with the second panel 714. The hinge connection between the tooth 752 and the main panel 712 is omitted. The hinge connection 713 between the second panel 714 and the main panel 712 is interrupted. The hinge connection between the other tooth 750 and the main panel 712 includes a combination of at least one cut line 757b and at least one scored or embossed line 757a. In the illustrated embodiment, each hinge connection includes a pair of cut lines 757b and three scored or embossed lines 757a. Teeth 750, 752 are separated from adjacent teeth by cut lines 751, 751'.

[0186] The cut lines 751, 751' may extend radially outward from the aperture A7. In the illustrated embodiment, the first cut line 751 is positioned opposite the third cut line 751 (the first cut line 751 and the third cut line 751 are collinear), and the second cut line 751' is positioned opposite the fourth cut line 751' (the second cut line 751' and the fourth cut line 751' are collinear).

[0187] At least one of the cut lines 751, 751′ terminates in a cut 755, which may be non-linear, generally arcuate, or formed from multiple consecutive linear segments. In the illustrated embodiment, a pair of cut lines 751′ may terminate in a transverse cut 755. The second cut line 751′ and the fourth cut line 751′ each terminate in a respective cut 755.

[0188] The embodiments of the item retention devices RT1, RT7, RT8, and RT9 in Figures 6A-6D are intended for use on the inside or lower engagement panel of an item carrier. The embodiments of the item retention devices RT2, RT5', and RT10 in Figures 7A-8 are intended for use on the outside or upper engagement panel of an item carrier. Any of the lower item retention devices RT1, RT7, RT8, and RT9 may be used in combination with any of the upper item retention devices RT2, RT5', and RT10. Furthermore, an individual blank may have two or more different lower item retention devices RT1, RT7, RT8, and RT9 used on the lower engagement panel and two or more different upper item retention devices RT2, RT5', and RT10 used on the upper engagement panel. In some embodiments, at least one of the retention devices used on the lower engagement panel has the same structure as at least one of the retention devices used on the upper engagement panel, and the devices may be aligned to accommodate the same item or may be positioned to accommodate different items.

[0189] It will be appreciated that depending on the combination of retention structures selected, the central hinge of the teeth of the lower item retention devices RT1, RT7, RT8, RT9 may be circumferentially or angularly offset relative to the cut line defining the side edge of the teeth of the upper item retention devices RT2, RT5', RT10, an example of which is shown in blank 10 of Figure 1. In some combinations, the inner hinge of the teeth of the lower item retention devices RT1, RT7, RT8, RT9 may be aligned or perpendicular to the cut line defining the side edge of one of the teeth of the upper item retention devices RT2, RT5', RT10, an example of which is shown in blank 310 of Figure 5.

[0190] The blanks 10, 110, 210, 310 include at least a paperboard substrate. The paperboard substrate material can be selected from conventional paperboards, e.g., having a weight of about 10 pt or greater, preferably ranging from about 16 pt to about 28 pt (0.028 in. / about 0.7 mm). Examples of such substrates include 27-point (pt.) SBS board (solid bleached sulfate paperboard coated on one side, trade name PrintKote®) or CNK® board (Coated Natural Kraft®—unbleached kraft paperboard with a clay coating on one side, trade name CarrierKote®), 21-point (pt.) SBS board or CNK® board, and E-flute or F-flute corrugated board manufactured by WestRock® Company. The paperboard substrate can be bleached or unbleached board. The paperboard can be coated on at least one side, optionally opposite the lamination surface, with a conventional coating selected to suit the printing method and paperboard composition.

[0191] The blanks 10, 110, 210, and 310 may include a tear-resistant layer laminated to the paperboard layer. An adhesive layer may also be optionally included between the paperboard substrate and the tear-resistant layer. The tear-resistant layer may be disposed on the uncoated side of the paperboard substrate and formed of a polymeric material and secured to the substrate. The tear-resistant layer provides toughness to the laminate structure. Suitable tear-resistant materials include, but are not limited to, tear-resistant laminate sheet materials such as NATRALOCK®. These materials may include layers of biaxially oriented polyester, oriented nylon, cross-laminated polyolefin, or n-axially oriented films, such as MYLAR®, which are high-density polyolefins. The orientation and cross-laminated structure of these materials contribute to their tear-resistant properties. Tear resistance may also be due to the chemical properties of the tear-resistant material, such as extruded metallocene-catalyzed polyethylene (mPE).

[0192] Alternatively, the tear-resistant layer may be a linear low-density polyethylene (LLDPE) layer. In embodiments where linear low-density polyethylene (LLDPE) or mPE is used, it is not necessary to incorporate an adhesive layer. Other suitable materials with a high level of tear resistance may also be used.

[0193] The adhesive layer may be formed from a polyolefin material, such as low density polyethylene (LDPE). The adhesive layer may be disposed between the substrate and the tear-resistant layer to secure the tear-resistant layer to the substrate.

[0194] The present invention provides a top-engaging carrier with improved article retention structures or top-engaging article devices.

[0195] It will be appreciated that various modifications are possible within the scope of the present invention, for example, the size and shape of the panels and apertures may be adjusted to accommodate articles of different sizes or shapes, more or fewer articles, and / or articles arranged in different array configurations.

[0196] It is understood that directional terms such as "top," "bottom," "base," "front," "rear," "end," "side," "inside," "outside," "upper," and "lower" used herein do not necessarily limit the respective panels to such orientations, but are merely used to distinguish these panels from one another.

[0197] As used herein, the terms "hinge connection" and "fold line" refer to any type of line that defines a hinge function of a blank, facilitates folding of the blank relative to one another, or indicates an optimal panel folding position of the blank. References to a "hinge connection" should not necessarily be interpreted as referring to only one fold line. In fact, a hinge connection may be formed from two or more fold lines, each of which may be either straight or curved. When straight fold lines form a hinge connection, the fold lines may be parallel to one another or slightly angled relative to one another. When curved fold lines form a hinge connection, the fold lines intersect with one another to define a shaped panel within the area enclosed by the curved fold lines. A typical example of such a hinge connection may include a pair of arched or bowed fold lines that intersect at two points and define an oval panel therebetween. A hinge connection may be formed from one or more straight fold lines and one or more curved fold lines. A typical example of such a hinge connection may include a combination of straight and arched or bowed fold lines that intersect at two points to define a half-moon shaped panel therebetween.

[0198] As used herein, the term "fold line" may refer to any of the following: cut lines, embossed lines, debossed lines, perforation lines, short slit lines, half-cut lines, single half-cuts, interrupted cut lines, aligned slit lines, score lines, as well as any combination of the foregoing options. As used herein, the term "fold line" refers to one or more fold lines on an assembled carrier, and is not limited to pre-formed hinge connections or fold lines that may be discerned on a carrier blank, but may also refer to one or more post-formed fold lines that are naturally created on the assembled carrier as a result of the carrier assembly process.

[0199] It should be understood that the hinge connections and fold lines may each include elements formed in the blank substrate, such as perforations, perforation lines, short slit lines, half-cut lines, single half-cut lines, cut lines, interrupted cut lines, slits, scores, embossed lines, debossed lines, or any combination thereof. The elements may be sized and positioned to provide the desired functionality. For example, perforation lines may be sized and designed with a degree of weakness to define the fold or cut lines. Perforation lines may be designed to fold easily and not break easily, to fold easily and break easily with more force, or to break easily with little force.

[0200] The phrase "align" as used herein refers to the alignment of two or more elements within an erected carton, such as the placement of an aperture formed in a first of two overlapping panels with a second aperture formed in a second of the two overlapping panels. These aligned elements may be aligned in the thickness direction of the overlapping panels.
