[Solution] The mechanical seal of the present disclosure comprises a rotating sealing ring provided integrally and rotatably on a rotating shaft, and a stationary sealing ring provided on a casing surrounding the rotating shaft, wherein one of the rotating sealing ring and the stationary sealing ring has a sealing ring body and a nose portion that slides relative to the other sealing ring, and the nose portion and the other sealing ring seal the fluid to be sealed inside the casing, wherein the nose portion has a shape-changing portion that changes the area of ​​at least one of the sliding surface area of ​​the nose portion with the other sealing ring and the pressure-receiving surface area of ​​the one sealing ring that receives the fluid pressure of the fluid to be sealed, as the nose portion wears in the axial direction due to sliding with the other sealing ring.
