[0057] Figure 1 shows a hinge-lid pack 1 according to one embodiment of the present invention. Pack 1 comprises a base 2 and a lid 3 hingedly connected to base 2 along a hinge line (not shown) formed in the rear wall of pack 1 to enable the pack to be opened and closed.
[0058] When the lid 3 is in the closed position, the lid 3 meets the base 2 at a joint line 4 that extends from each end of the hinge line into a corresponding side wall 5 of the pack 1 and across the front wall of the pack 1. The joint lines 4 separate each side wall 5 into a lid portion 6 and a base portion 7.
[0059] Figure 2 shows the pack 1 shown in Figure 1 with the lid in an open position. It will be appreciated that the base 2 defines a delivery system receiving space in which a delivery system 8 (shown in Figure 2), such as a smoking article or other tobacco industry product, is received and stored. The delivery system 8 is accessible when the lid 3 is in the open position, and the delivery system 8 is retained within the delivery system receiving space when the lid 3 is in the closed position. Typically, the delivery system 8 is wrapped in a bundle 9 (shown in Figure 2).
[0060] Only at least one side wall 5 includes a line of weakness 10 between the lid portion 6 and the base portion 7. In some embodiments, only each side wall 5 of the pack 1 includes a line of weakness 10. The terms "only at least one side wall" or "only each side wall" should be understood to mean that the line of weakness 10 is present in only one or both side walls 5. In other words, there is no line of weakness across the front wall of the pack between the lid and the base. The line of weakness 10 is configured to break to allow the lid 3 to rotate about the hinge line to the open position. Thus, the line of weakness 10 indicates that the lid 3 has previously been rotated to the open position when the lid 3 is subsequently closed. In other words, the line of weakness 10 functions as a tamper-evident feature. In some embodiments, the line of weakness 10 is configured to provide audible or resistive feedback when the lid 3 is first rotated about the hinge line to the open position. In the embodiment shown in FIG. 2, the line of weakness 10 is aligned with the bond line 4 when the lid 3 is in the closed position.
[0061] In some embodiments, the line of weakness 10 comprises a tear tape formed in at least one side wall 5 of the pack 1. It should be understood that the tear tape may also comprise a tab to enable tearing of the tear tape. When the line of weakness 10 comprises a tear tape, the consumer cannot open the pack 1 until the tear tape is removed. Once removed, the consumer can rotate the lid 3 to the open position. Furthermore, when the tear tape is removed from the pack 1, it is apparent to the consumer that the pack 1 has previously been opened because the tear tape leaves a gap between the lid portion 6 and the base portion 7 of the side wall 5. Alternatively, the line of weakness 10 may be formed from a perforation in the material of the pack 1.
[0062] Figure 3 shows a hinge-lid pack according to another embodiment of the present invention, where at least one side wall 5 includes a tab 11. The tab 11 is secured to the inner surfaces of the lid portion 6 and base portion 7 of at least one side wall 5. In other embodiments, each of the side walls 5 includes a tab 11. Figure 4 shows the pack 1 of Figure 3 with the lid 3 in an open position. As can be seen, a line of weakness 10 is formed in the tab 11. When the lid 3 is rotated to the open position for the first time, the tab 11 breaks along the line of weakness 10, and when the lid 3 is subsequently closed, it indicates that the lid 3 has previously been rotated to the open position.
[0063] A portion 12 of the tab 11 is secured to the inner surface of the base portion 7. Another portion 13 of the tab 11 is secured to the inner surface of the lid portion 6. The portions 12, 13 of the tab 11 may be secured to the lid portion 6 and the base portion 7 by any suitable means. Preferably, the tab 11 is secured to the inner surfaces of the lid portion 6 and the base portion 7 by a permanent adhesive. It should be understood that the tab 11 is secured to the lid portion 6 and the base portion 7 such that when the lid 3 is rotated about the hinge line for the first time, the portions 12, 13 of the tab 11 remain attached to the inner surfaces of the lid portion 6 and the base portion 7, and therefore the tab 11 breaks along the line of weakness 10.
[0064] As can be seen in Figure 4, the line of weakness 10 of the tab 11 is spaced from the line of joinder 4. Thus, when the lid 3 is in the open position, a portion 14 of the tab 11 protrudes from the base portion 7. In an alternative embodiment, shown in Figure 5, the line of weakness 10 is spaced from the line of joinder 4 such that when the lid 3 is in the open position, a portion 14 of the tab 11 protrudes from the lid portion 6 or the base portion 7. In some embodiments, the portion 14 of the tab 11 that protrudes from the lid portion 6 or the base portion 7 when the lid 3 is in the open position is provided with indicia. The indicia may convey information to the consumer, such as a message stating that the pack 1 has previously been opened.
[0065] It should further be appreciated that, alternatively, tab 11 may be secured to the exterior surface of at least one side wall 5. In such an embodiment, it will be more apparent to the consumer that pack 1 has previously been opened, as the broken tab will be on the exterior of pack 1 and therefore visible to the consumer.
[0066] FIG. 6 is a flowchart illustrating method steps for manufacturing a hinge-lid pack according to an embodiment of the present invention. The method includes a first step S1 of providing a base and a lid that are rotatable relative to one another between an open position and a closed position about a hinge line formed in the rear wall of the pack. In the closed position, the lid and base meet at a join line that extends from each end of the hinge line into each side wall and separates each side wall into a lid portion and a base portion. The method includes a second step S2 of forming a line of weakness in at least one side wall between the lid portion and the base portion, the line of weakness breaking when the lid is first rotated to the open position about the hinge line and when the lid is subsequently closed to indicate that the lid has previously been rotated to the open position. The second step S2 of forming the line of weakness may include aligning the line of weakness with the join line when the lid is in the closed position. As described above, the line of weakness may include a tear tape formed in at least one side wall. The tear tape may include a tab that allows the tear tape to be torn.
[0067] In some embodiments, the method further includes a third step S3 of providing a tab on at least one side wall or on each side wall. Additionally, the method may further include a fourth step S4 of securing tabs to the inner surfaces of the base and lid portions. In this case, the second step S2 of forming the lines of weakness may include forming the lines of weakness in the tabs so that the tabs break when the lid is rotated to the open position about the hinge line for the first time, to indicate that the lid has previously been rotated to the open position when the lid is subsequently closed.
[0068] Furthermore, the fourth step S4 of securing the tab to the inner surfaces of the base and lid portions may include securing one portion of the tab to the inner surface of the base portion and another portion of the tab to the inner surface of the lid portion, and may also include securing the tab with a permanent adhesive.
[0069] In some embodiments, the second step S2 of forming the line of weakness includes spacing the line of weakness from the line of bond such that a portion of the tab protrudes from the base or lid portion when the lid is in the open position. The method may also include a fifth step S5 of providing indicia on the portion of the tab that protrudes from the base or lid portion.
[0070] Finally, the method may include a sixth step S6 of configuring the lines of weakness to provide audible or resistive feedback when the lid is first rotated about the hinge into the open position.
