Description

[Technical field]

[0001] The present invention relates to a light emitting strip, for example a light emitting diode (LED) strip. The present invention also relates to a method for manufacturing the light emitting strip. [Background technology]

[0002] LED strips are available in a wide variety. However, almost all of them have a one-sided Lambertian luminous intensity distribution. In many use cases, for example when the LED strip is free hanging rather than mounted on a wall or ceiling, this is extremely inconvenient.

[0003] US Patent Publication No. 2014098535 relates to a segmented LED lighting system. In particular, US Patent Publication No. 2014098535 discloses a set of channel segments connected by a flexible lens sleeve that can be positioned in various ways. A printed circuit board with at least one LED is mounted within each channel segment. Each segment preferably has a base portion with two ribbed vertical sides. The lens sleeve is preferably co-extruded from flexible acrylic and has opaque side grips that grip the ribbed vertical sides and a translucent lens portion with voids along the length and width of the lens sleeve to aid in proper diffraction of light. Summary of the Invention [Problem to be solved by the invention]

[0004] SUMMARY OF THE PRESENT EMBODIMENT It is an object of the present invention to overcome or at least mitigate the aforementioned problems and provide an improved light strip. [Means for solving the problem]

[0005] According to a first aspect of the invention, this and other objects are achieved by a light-emitting strip comprising an elongated body, at least one light source adapted to emit light into the elongated body, and a gap in the elongated body, the gap being arranged in front of the at least one light source and adapted to distribute the light emitted by the at least one light source in all directions in a plane perpendicular to the longitudinal direction of the light-emitting strip.

[0006] The present invention is based on the understanding that gaps, e.g. voids, in the body may be shaped and / or positioned such that light from at least one light source can be distributed omnidirectionally, i.e. essentially in all directions, in a plane perpendicular to the longitudinal direction of the light-emitting strip, even if light is emitted from the light source in only one main direction.

[0007] With the omnidirectional light strip of the present invention, the direction of attachment of the strip is not important, and any twisting of the strip does not create any visible effect. For example, when the light strip of the present invention is freely hanging, it is possible and highly desirable to obtain a uniform light effect along the entire length of the strip.

[0008] The gap may be configured such that a first portion of the light emitted by the at least one light source passes through the gap, and a second portion of the light emitted by the at least one light source is reflected back towards the plane in which the at least one light source is located, but preferably not towards the at least one light source itself or towards any support for the at least one light source. This may be achieved by having a first interface between the elongated body and the gap, proximal to the at least one light source, that is bi-arch shaped, and a second interface between the elongated body and the gap, distal to the at least one light source. The second interface may be single-arch shaped. The second portion may be reflected back by at least two total internal reflections at the interface between the elongated body and the gap, which may be, for example, the first interface described above.

[0009] The at least one light source may be disposed within the elongate body along with any support for the at least one light source, for example, the at least one light source may be disposed within a space within the elongate body along with a support, if present.

[0010] The elongate body may have a circular cross-section, which may be beneficially suited for omnidirectional lighting functions, which have no preferred orientation, and do not change appearance when the lighting device is slightly twisted.

[0011] The light emitting strip may further comprise an elongated diffuse outer portion at least partially surrounding the elongated body. The elongated diffuse outer portion may further homogenize the emitted light and prevent direct viewing of the at least one light source. The elongated diffuse outer portion may have the further function of making the light output less susceptible to scratches and dirt by smoothing out small artefacts. Instead of an elongated diffuse outer portion, it is also possible for the elongated body to have a rough outer surface or a thin white coating.

[0012] The thickness of the elongated diffuse outer portion may vary along the circumference of the elongated diffuse outer portion, e.g., the elongated diffuse outer portion may be thicker in the primary emission direction of the at least one light source and thinner in the opposite direction to balance asymmetries in the case of top-emitting light sources.

[0013] The elongated diffuse outer portion may include scattering particles, the density of which varies along a circumference of the elongated diffuse outer portion, the density being higher in the primary emission direction of the at least one light source and lower in the opposite direction, for example to balance asymmetries in the case of top-emitting light sources.

[0014] The elongate body and the elongate diffusing outer portion may be co-extruded, and therefore, the elongate body and the elongate diffusing outer portion may be collectively referred to as a co-extruded profile or a co-extrusion profile.

[0015] The gap may have any shape as shown in the figures of this application.

[0016] According to a second aspect of the present invention there is provided a method for manufacturing a light emitting strip, the method comprising the steps of co-extruding a central elongated body and an elongated diffusive outer portion, and providing at least one light source adapted to emit light within the elongated body, a gap within the elongated body being located in front of the at least one light source, the gap being adapted to distribute the light emitted by the at least one light source omnidirectionally in a plane perpendicular to the longitudinal direction of the light emitting strip. This aspect may exhibit the same or similar features and technical effects as the first aspect, and vice versa.

[0017] It is to be noted that the invention relates to all possible combinations of the features recited in the claims. [Brief description of the drawings]

[0020] The present invention will now be described more fully hereinafter with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which presently preferred embodiments of the invention are shown. The present invention may, however, be embodied in many different forms and should not be construed as limited to the embodiments set forth herein, but rather the embodiments are provided for completeness and completeness and to fully convey the scope of the invention to those skilled in the art.

[0021] 1 and 2a-2c show a light emitting strip 10 in accordance with one or more embodiments of the present invention. The light emitting strip 10 may be a flexible, omnidirectional light emitting diode (LED) strip. It will be understood from the drawings and the following description that the light emitting strip 10 need not be flat. Instead, the light emitting strip 10 may be shaped (generally) like a rope or string.

[0022] The light emitting strip 10 comprises a (central) elongated body 12. The elongated body 12 may have a length, for example, in the range of 1-10 m (for indoor applications) or 1-100 (for outdoor applications), which may correspond to the total length of the light emitting strip 10. The elongated body 12 may be flexible. The elongated body 12 may be transparent (clear) or slightly translucent. The elongated body 12 may be made of or may include, for example, silicone, thermoplastic elastomer (TPE), PVC, PMMA or polycarbonate. The elongated body 12 may have a circular cross section perpendicular to the length of the elongated body 12, as can be seen in Figures 2a-2c. In particular, the circumference of the elongated body 12 is circular. The diameter of the elongated body 12 may be in the range of 5-50 mm, typically in the range of 10-30 mm.

[0023] The light emitting strip 10 further comprises at least one, but preferably several, light sources 16 adapted to emit light into the elongated body 12. The light sources 16 may be mounted on the elongated support 14. The elongated support 14 may have (substantially) the same length as the elongated body 12. The elongated support 14 is here a flexible printed circuit and the light sources 16 are light emitting diodes. The light sources 16 are positioned on one side 18 of the elongated support 14 and may be mounted one after the other in the longitudinal direction of the elongated support 14. Typically, there is a distance between successive light sources 16. The light sources 16 may face in the same direction. The light sources 16 may be top-emitting devices with a main emission direction 20. The elongated support 14 and the light sources 16 may be arranged in an air-filled space 22 in the elongated body 12. The space 22 may have a rectangular shape, for example, as seen in Figures 2a-2c.

[0024] The at least one light source may alternatively be an organic light emitting diode or laser diode mounted on the elongated support 14, or a strip-shaped light source without a separate support, for example a flexible electroluminescent strip or a flexible organic LED strip. Also, instead of being a flexible printed circuit, the elongated support 14 may be simply a wire or a flat cable wire, or a number of small rigid boards interconnected by flexible mechanical and electrical connectors, to which the light sources 16 are directly attached.

[0025] The light emitting strip 10 further comprises a gap 24 in the elongated body 12. The gap 24 may have (substantially) the same length as the elongated body 12. The gap 24 may also be referred to as an elongated gap. The gap 24 may be an empty gap or the gap 24 may be filled with a material having a lower refractive index than the material of the elongated body 12. The gap 24 is located in front of the light source 16, i.e. in the main light emission direction 20 of the light source 16. The gap 24 is generally adapted to distribute the light emitted by the light source 16 omnidirectionally in a plane 26 perpendicular to the longitudinal direction of the light emitting strip 10. The gap 24 is shaped and positioned relative to the light source 16 such that a first portion 28a of the light emitted by the light source 16 may pass through the gap 24 and a second portion 28b of the light emitted by the light source 16 may be reflected back toward a plane 30 on which the light source 16 is located (see FIG. 2b), but may not be reflected back directly toward the elongated support 14 and the light source 16. That is, the light emitting strip 10 has a first interface 32a and a second interface 32b between the elongated body 12 and the gap 24. The first interface 32a is proximal to the light source 16, and the second interface 32b is distal to the light source 16. Moreover, as can be seen in FIGS. 2a-c, the first interface 32a is in the shape of a double arch. That is, the first interface 32a has the shape of two arches connected at a midpoint 34. The midpoint 34 may be positioned centrally above the light source 16. The arch of the first boundary surface 32a may be (semi)circular, bow-shaped, pointed, inverted V-shaped, etc. The second boundary surface 32b has a single arch shape, as seen in Figs. 2a-2c. That is, the first boundary surface 32a has the shape of one arch, which connects the outer points 36a, 36b of the two arches of the first boundary surface 32a. The gap 24 should be wider than the at least one light source 16 (and the elongated support 14) so that as much of the light reflected back as possible can pass through the at least one light source 16 (and the support 14). The shape of the gap 24 as seen in Figs. 2a-2c, as well as other shapes seen in their cross-sectional views, may be uniform over the entire length of the light-emitting strip 10.

[0026] Said second portion 28b may be at least 10% or at least 20%, but preferably not more than 50%, of the light emitted by the light source 16 as seen in the plane 26, while the first portion 28a constitutes the remainder of the light emitted by the light source 16 in the plane 26. The first portion 28a may be, for example, 50% of the light emitted by the light source 16 and the second portion 28b is 50% of the light emitted by the light source 16.

[0027] The light-emitting strip 10 may further comprise an elongated diffusing outer portion 38. The elongated diffusing outer portion 38 may have (substantially) the same length as the elongated body 12. The elongated diffusing outer portion 38 completely surrounds the elongated body 12, as can be seen here in Fig. 2a-2c. The elongated diffusing outer portion 38 may be made of or may comprise the same material as the elongated body 12, for example silicone, thermoplastic elastomer (TPE), PVC, PMMA or polycarbonate. In Fig. 2a-2c, the thickness of the elongated diffusing outer portion 38 varies along the circumferential direction 40 of the elongated diffusing outer portion 38. That is to say, the elongated diffusing outer portion 38 is thicker (=more diffusing) in the main emission direction 20 and thinner in the opposite direction, so as to balance the asymmetry of the top-emitting light source 16. The thickness in the main emission direction 20 may for example range from 3 to 20 mm, and in the opposite direction may range from 0 to 5 mm or 0.5 to 5 mm. The thickness may for example vary from 10 mm (top) to 3 mm (bottom), or from 20 mm (top) to 1 mm (bottom). In case the elongated diffusing outer portion 38 only partially surrounds the elongated body 12, the thickness on the opposite side to the main emission direction 20 may be 0 mm.

[0028] In another embodiment shown in Fig. 3, the elongated diffuse outer portion 38 comprises scattering particles 42, e.g. white paint material (such as titanium oxide) or any transparent material (air bubbles, PC particles, PMMA particles, silicone, glass, etc.) with a different refractive index than the remaining elongated diffuse outer portion 38. The density of the scattering particles 42 may vary along the circumferential direction 40. The density may be higher (=more scattering / diffusing) in the primary emission direction 20 and lower in the opposite direction, e.g. to balance the asymmetry of the top-emitting light source 16. The thickness of the elongated diffuse outer portion 38 may be uniform along the circumferential direction 40 in this embodiment.

[0029] During operation of the light emitting strip 10, the light sources 16 emit light, and as shown in Fig. 2b, a part of the light (first part 28a) passes through the gaps 24, while a part of the light (second part 28b) is reflected back towards the plane 30 by at least two total internal reflections at the first interface 32a, resulting in an omnidirectional luminous intensity distribution. That is, the gaps 24 uniformly (re)distribute the light emitted by the light sources 16 along the periphery of the light emitting strip 10. The elongated diffusing outer parts 38 further homogenize the light, as shown in Fig. 2c.

[0030] 4 is a flow chart of a method for manufacturing the light emitting strip 10. The method includes the steps of co-extruding (S1) the central elongated body 12 (including the spaces 22 and gaps 24) and the elongated diffusive outer portion 38, and providing (S2) at least one light source 16 adapted to emit light within the elongated body 12. The latter step may include inserting the elongated support 14 and / or the light source 16 within the spaces 22 during or after the co-extruding step.

[0031] The light strip 10 can be used indoors or outdoors as a direct or indirect light source. The light strip 10 may have sufficient light output to create the best ambience or for practical purposes such as soft security and navigation lighting and architectural lighting.

[0032] Those skilled in the art will appreciate that the present invention is in no way limited to the preferred embodiments described above, but rather many modifications and variations are possible within the scope of the appended claims.

[0033] Furthermore, variations to the disclosed embodiments can be understood and effected by those skilled in the art in practicing the claimed invention, on studying the drawings, the disclosure and the appended claims. In the claims, the word "comprising" does not exclude other elements or steps, and the indefinite articles "a" or "an" do not exclude a plurality. The mere fact that certain measures are recited in mutually different dependent claims does not indicate that a combination of these measures cannot be used to advantage.
