Abstract
Description
[Technical field]
[0001] The present invention relates to a grinding device comprising a drive means and a grinding housing, the grinding housing comprising a set of mutually coacting grinding bodies, the set of grinding bodies having mutually facing at least substantially parallel grinding surfaces maintaining a predetermined mutual clearance, at least a driven grinding body of the set of grinding bodies being rotatably suspended within the grinding housing about its central axis and being operatively connected or at least connectable to the drive means for effecting rotation about the central axis during operation, and adjustment means being provided whereby at least an adjustable grinding body of the set of grinding bodies is axially adjustable to provide a desired mutual clearance between the grinding surfaces.
[0002] The invention also relates to a coffee machine comprising: a grinding device for grinding coffee beans into coffee powder having a determined grind size; a brewing device with an extraction chamber, in which a predetermined amount of coffee powder removed from the grinding device is received, the brewing device intended and configured to compress the coffee powder into a bed in the extraction chamber using a pressing force; an inlet part for hot water at the inlet side of the extraction chamber and an outlet part for the obtained coffee extract at the outlet side of the extraction chamber; and water supply means, the water supply means comprising a water conduit The present invention relates to a coffee machine comprising: a water supply means capable and configured to guide a predetermined amount of water under elevated pressure and with elevated temperature to an inlet part through a grinding device; an outlet part, in which the coffee product can be removed, the outlet part being connected to the outlet part of the brewing chamber over a product conduit; and an electronic control unit capable and configured to impart at least presets to the machine, comprising one or more of the grind size, the amount of coffee powder, the pressing force, the amount of water, the elevated pressure and the elevated temperature, and to control the means provided for this purpose. Furthermore, the present invention relates to a method for regulating the grinding device. [Background technology]
[0003] Grinding devices of the type described in the preamble are applied on a large scale as coffee bean mills or grinders, by which coffee beans are ground into a powdered grind and a coffee extract is extracted from the powdered grind by hot water. This concerns, inter alia, bean grinders, which are integrated into coffee machines by means of which a hot coffee product is prepared from the grinds. The grinds are usually compressed into a compact bed before the coffee extract is obtained from the grinds by hot water, optionally under elevated pressure. The coffee product can essentially vary from espresso coffee to filter coffee of different strengths, depending on the applied water pressure, the compactness of the coffee bed and the amount of water with respect to the quality of the coffee powder, and milk, milk powder and / or sweetener (sugar) can be added as required, thereby adjusting different coffee products.
[0004] The coffee beans are placed in a grinding housing and then received between a set of grinding bodies (also called grinding discs). At least one of the two grinding bodies rotates during operation, thereby moving the beans. The grinding surfaces usually have a series of cutting edges, whereby the coffee beans gripped between the grinding discs are ground into granular coffee powder. Here, the clearance between the two grinding bodies essentially defines the grind size of the grind obtained: the smaller this clearance is, the finer the grind will be; and vice versa: the larger this clearance is, the coarser the grind will be.
[0005] In addition to the temperature, pressure, amount and retention time of the hot water (by which the coffee extract is to be extracted from the grinds), the grind size, together with the amount of grinds, are important parameters in a given source product with regard to the quality and flavor of the beverage to be prepared therefrom. In order to be able to adjust the grind size, known grinding devices have optionally powered adjustment means by which at least one of the sets of grinding bodies is adjustable. The clearance between the grinding bodies can thereby be adjusted and thus the grinds can be ground to a finer or coarser setting. This results in a more or less concentrated (strong) extract being obtained from the grinds, and also affects the essential oils and other flavors to be extracted from the powder.
[0006] A disadvantage of the known grinding devices is that the adjustment of the grind size here is only relative. It is only possible to adjust gradually from the current setting to a finer or coarser setting. This setting is then lost, for example in case of a breakdown or if one of the two grinding body parts is removed and then replaced for inspection and maintenance. The known grinding devices do not allow a fixed, predetermined and absolute setting of the grind size to be given. In fact, this places serious limitations on the desired control of the device, for example on the coffee quality and flavor, especially if the device has to form part of a system whereby the coffee quality can be monitored and / or regulated remotely. Summary of the Invention [Problem to be solved by the invention]
[0007] The present invention therefore aims, inter alia, to provide a grinding device, and a device for preparing hot drinks, which allows an absolute precisely determined setting of the grind size. [Means for solving the problem]
[0008] To achieve the above-mentioned object, a grinding device of the type described in the preamble has the characteristic according to the invention that the adjustment of the adjustable grinding body is limited from a first extreme position to a second extreme position corresponding to a fixed set range between a minimum clearance between the two grinding surfaces and a maximum clearance between the two grinding surfaces, and at least one of the first and second extreme positions of the adjustable grinding body is provided by a stop, which is encountered by the adjustment means at the relevant extreme position. The adjustment of the grinding size is therefore always limited to a fixed set range ranging from the determined minimum clearance to the maximum clearance.
[0009] At least one of these extreme positions can be detected by the adjustment means of the device, whereby a fixed reference is obtained, and then absolute setting of the grind size relative to this reference is possible by adjusting the adjustable grinding body part over a fixed distance from this position to a predefined position within a set range. This provides full control over the clearance thereby given between the grinding bodies and thereby over the set grind size. In a preferred embodiment, the grinding device according to the invention is now characterized in that at least one extreme position corresponds to the maximum clearance between the two grinding surfaces. That position (from which said reference is taken) thus corresponds to the maximum clearance between the two grinding bodies, such that it is not disturbed by grinds and / or bean residues that may be present between the two grinding bodies.
[0010] A single reference can be inferred from the stop as soon as the stop is encountered by the adjustment means, which single reference will be sufficient by itself. However, a particular embodiment of the grinding device according to the invention is characterized in that the setting range is given by a first stop on the grinding device and by a second stop on the grinding device, the first stop being encountered by the adjustment means in a first extreme position, the first stop corresponding to the minimum clearance, and the second stop being encountered by the adjustment means in a second extreme position, the second stop corresponding to the maximum clearance. Both the upper and lower limits of adjustment of the adjustable grinding body, and thereby the entire setting range, are thus fixed in the construction of the grinding device.
[0011] A particular embodiment of the grinding device according to the invention is characterized in that the grinding housing comprises at least one stop and the adjustable grinding body comprises a stop surface which is received on the stop in the relevant extreme positions. The grinding housing comprises at least one stop, whereby the corresponding limit of the set range is determined. The adjustable grinding body comprises at least one stop surface which abuts against the stop in the extreme positions, whereby the adjustment is limited within the set range.
[0012] A preferred embodiment of the grinding device is characterized in that the adjusting device is adjustably connected to the adjustable grinding body part, the adjusting device comprising a stop surface. The adjustment of the adjusting device relative to the adjustable grinding body part, and thereby relative to the stop surface constituted by it, therefore allows the setting range to be shifted as a whole, so that its upper and lower limits (albeit collectively) can be optimally adapted to the specific needs. For the purpose of possible visual inspection of the specific setting of the grinding device, a further particular embodiment is characterized in that the adjusting device comprises a scale division, the grinding housing comprises a window, and during the setting of the adjustable grinding body part, the adjusting device moves behind the window, but the current setting can be seen through the window.
[0013] Although the adjustment of the adjustable grinding body, for example by means of an adjustment screw or other member, can be implemented manually, a preferred embodiment of the grinding device according to the invention is characterized in that the adjustment means comprises a controllable actuator which is operatively connected to said adjustable grinding body or which at least can be connected to said adjustable grinding body and which is adapted to impart to the adjustable grinding body a controlled axial adjustment along the central axis. By driving the actuator from a control unit provided for this purpose, the adjustment and setting of the grinding size can thus be performed fully autonomously by and inside the grinding device.
[0014] A further particular embodiment of the grinding device, now according to the invention, is characterized in that said adjustable grinding body includes a primary screw thread operatively engaged with a secondary screw thread of the grinding housing, the actuator includes an electric motor with an output drive shaft, and a transmission is provided between the drive shaft of the electric motor and the adjustable grinding body for imparting to the adjustable grinding body a controlled rotation about the collective screw shaft of the primary and secondary screw threads. The adjustable grinding body is thus received in the grinding housing in an axially adjustable manner, the degree of adjustment within a set range being determined by the number of revolutions imparted to the drive shaft of the electric motor in combination with the optional transmission ratio and the pitch of the primary and secondary screw threads.
[0015] In order to enable the grinding device to assume a predetermined setting, a further preferred embodiment of the grinding device according to the invention is characterized in that the actuator can be controlled, at least during operation, by a control unit, the control unit being provided with memory means, whereby the positions given to the actuator are stored in the memory means, the memory means including, inter alia, non-volatile electronic memory means. The intended position can thus always be read out of the memory by the control unit, such that the grinding device can return to the intended setting, for example after it has been adjusted. When a non-volatile memory is applied, this is still possible even after a power failure.
[0016] A further preferred embodiment of the grinding device according to the invention is characterized in that the at least one adjustable grinding body and the at least one driven grinding body both comprise a first of a set of mutually cooperating grinding bodies. The associated grinding body here provides both the grinding size and the intended adjustability of the grinding process itself. Thereby, the other grinding body can remain of low complexity. In a further embodiment, the grinding device is thus characterized in that the opposite second grinding body of the set of mutually cooperating grinding bodies is arranged in a stationary manner.
[0017] For the purpose of possible interim or regular maintenance or repair of faults, it is desirable that the grinding device can, if desired, be dismantled, in particular with respect to the grinding body part therein. If a foreign object, such as a stone, for example, unexpectedly gets between the grinding surfaces and if the device is thereby jammed or does not function properly, this provides an option to eliminate such a problem. In this respect, a further particular embodiment of the grinding device according to the invention has the feature that the second grinding body part is connected to the grinding housing in a manually removable manner. If desired, the second grinding body part can thus be removed, thus exposing the grinding surfaces and making them accessible for inspection and / or maintenance.
[0018] Here, when the second grinding body part is replaced in the grinding housing, it is desirable to once again assume its original position as far as possible, so that the clearance set with respect to the other grinding body part is thereby not changed or only slightly changed. To this end, a further particular embodiment of the grinding device according to the invention has the feature that the second grinding body part can be placed up to a further stop in the grinding housing, against which it strikes when it is installed, more particularly a bayonet connection being formed between the second grinding body part and the grinding housing. This further stop (such as, for example, the end position of the bayonet closure) here also provides a fixed reference for the setting range of the adjustable grinding body part, whereby the absolute value of the intended setting can be guaranteed, at least to a large extent, unless the two grinding bodies are either replaced or have suffered too much wear. However, a relatively simple calibration or a complete reset may be sufficient in the latter case to ensure again the correct absolute setting value.
[0019] Besides using the stop, it is also possible to ensure in other ways that the second grinding body part is correctly installed in the grinding housing. A particular preferred embodiment of the grinding device according to the invention has in this respect the feature that an outlet opening is provided in the wall of the grinding housing, at the location of which the powder tube can be releasably connected to the wall, and a collar is provided on the second grinding body part, which leaves space for the powder tube when the second grinding body part hits the stop, but prevents the connection of the powder tube in case of an incomplete installation of the second grinding body part. The collar therefore prevents the outlet from being installed if the second grinding body part is not correctly positioned. Continued operation of the grinding device is therefore prevented as an indication that the second grinding body part is not correctly installed in its end position in the grinding housing.
[0020] In order to limit the sound level and vibrations of the grinding device, a further embodiment of the grinding device according to the invention is characterized in that damping means are provided between the second grinding body part and the adjacent parts of the grinding housing, the damping means being capable of and being configured to absorb vibrations during operation, more particularly the damping means comprising a flexible lining. Limiting the sound level of the device confers commercial advantages to the coffee dispenser in which the grinding device is incorporated. In particular in the case where the coffee dispenser is installed in an office, a quieter coffee dispenser will sell better. In addition, limiting the vibrations also has advantages in the construction of the dispenser. Thus, vibrations are transmitted to other components of the dispenser, and in particular to a lesser extent to the optional powder dosing means, so that they function better.
[0021] According to the invention, a further preferred embodiment of the grinding device is characterized in that the drive means comprises a drive platform with a main motor and an actuator, the main motor being operably connected or at least operably connected to the driven grinding body by a first transmission, the actuator being operably connected or at least operably connected to the adjustable grinding body by a second transmission, and the grinding housing being connected to the drive platform in a manually removable manner. Thus, it is not only one of the grinding body parts that is optionally removable, but the grinding housing as a whole can be completely removed and, if installed, can be removed. This facilitates the maintenance and inspection of the grinding device, in that the grinding housing (which is usually the most subject to breakdowns and wear) is completely accessible without the need for additional tools and can be replaced as a whole, if desired. With a view to further reducing sound and vibration, the grinding device has in a further embodiment the feature that damping means are provided between the grinding housing and the drive platform, the damping means being capable of and configured to absorb vibrations during operation, more particularly the damping means comprising a flexible lining.
[0022] A powered adjustable grind size, for example of the type described above, provides an additional parameter to the electronic control unit for the control of the brewing process of the coffee machine. The powder can thereby be of a given fineness or coarseness, which, in addition to the amount of powder, influences the resistance of the coffee bed at a determined pressing force of the coffee bed and thereby to a large extent the coffee-water contact time. The invention is based, inter alia, on the insight that this contact time determines, inter alia, the flavor and quality of the final product.
[0023] In a further aspect, the present invention aims, inter alia, to provide a coffee machine in which the coffee-water contact time can be more precisely adjusted.
[0024] A coffee machine of the type described in the preamble is, for this purpose, according to the invention, characterized in that the control unit is coupled to at least one sensor, which is capable and configured to record a liquid flow rate through the machine and generate a liquid flow rate in the form of an electronic value, the liquid flow rate being, inter alia, the flow rate of the product flow through the product conduit from the brewing chamber or the flow rate of the water flow through the water conduit to the brewing chamber, the liquid flow being at least partially regulated by a fine adjustment and controlled by the control unit, which is capable and configured to impart a fine adjustment to the machine based on the received value of the liquid flow rate, whereby the liquid flow rate can be adjusted to a predetermined value, which value is here inter alia adjusted and imparted such that a predetermined contact time between the coffee and the water flowing through is realized.
[0025] In a particular embodiment, the coffee machine according to the invention is characterized in that the product conduit comprises a controllable orifice and the fine-tuning unit comprises at least one of a controllable pump and a controllable orifice in the product conduit for control of at least one of the elevated pressure and the resistance of the orifice. Thus, for example, the adjustment of the pump pressure or the resistance in the product conduit allows the machine to adjust the coffee-water contact time during the brewing process and to adjust it to a desired value. In subsequent brewing cycles, the preset can then be optionally adjusted based on historical empirical data of this fine-tuning unit, such that the possibly necessary fine-tuning is then to remain limited. This makes it possible to fully predict climatological factors such as air humidity and room temperature, which also affect the resistance and counterpressure of the compressed coffee bed.
[0026] The absolute predefined setting of the grinding size of the grinding device according to the invention offers a particular option when applied in a device for preparing hot drinks, such as for example a coffee machine for preparing a coffee product, where an extract is extracted from the grinds by hot water. This is because an optional automatic grinding setting can now be coupled to an absolute scale. This means that the setting and monitoring of the coffee fineness can no longer be done substantially only by the holding time of the product, but also by a direct absolute setting of the grinding size and therefore also by a recipe. A coffee recipe typically has a predefined fineness, based on the type of coffee, the type of beans and the dosage. Thus, a preferred embodiment of a coffee machine of the type described in the preamble is characterized in that the grinding device comprises a grinding device according to the invention and the control unit is operatively coupled to the adjustment means of the grinding device and is adapted to give and to give the adjustable grinding body a defined absolute position as part of the preset.
[0027] The advantage of the present invention is that it is possible to adjust based on a real scale, for example using software, so that when creating a (coffee) formula it is possible to adjust based on multiple parameters. This provides the grinding device, and thus also the machine equipped with it, with a significant distinguishing feature and technical improvement in the market. Thus, most, if not all, of the parameters that determine the quality and flavor of the product to be taken can be brought under control and adjustable within the limits of the machine.
[0028] A particular embodiment of the coffee machine is further characterized in that the control unit here comprises an electronic memory, preferably a non-volatile memory, and the defined absolute position is stored in the electronic memory, and the control unit can and is configured to apply a resetting process to the grinding device, whereby the grinding device is reset from an adjusted state to the stored position. The information determining the grind size is hereby stored in or at the device, such that said resetting process can be applied to the machine in a simple manner after a manual adjustment of the grinding device, for example in case of inspection or maintenance, such that the grinding device again assumes its correct setting.
[0029] For a more perfect control over the product quality and for the adjustability of the product quality, a further particular embodiment of the coffee machine according to the invention is characterized in that the control unit is linked to at least one sensor, which is capable and configured to record and generate in the form of an electronic value the liquid flow rate through the device, which is in particular the flow rate of the product flow through the product conduit from the extraction chamber or the flow rate of the water flow through the water conduit to the extraction chamber, the liquid flow being adjustable by the control means, which are controlled by the control unit, more particularly the control means comprising at least one of a controllable pump and a controllable throttle in the product conduit. For the purpose of preparing a coffee product such as espresso, the coffee powder is usually compressed in the extraction chamber into a compact coffee bed before hot water is guided through it to obtain the coffee extract. In practice, it has been found that it is mainly the contact time between the hot water and the coffee bed that strongly influences the taste and quality of the final product. This contact time can be derived or calculated by the control unit from the recording of the flow rate of the liquid flow through the machine.
[0030] The pressing force (by which the coffee powder is compressed in the brewing chamber) together with the fineness of the powder determines the resistance encountered by the hot water from the coffee bed. This resistance determines to a large extent the contact time between the hot water and the coffee bed. If the control unit detects too short a contact time, this can be acted upon by the control unit by applying a higher compaction pressure (at which the coffee powder is compressed into the coffee bed) and also by applying a finer grind size to the grinding device. The absolute direct control of the grinding device according to the invention here allows a control that is at least to a large extent defined algorithmically and not determined only experimentally. It is therefore also possible to take into account less controllable environmental factors, such as for example temperature and air humidity, which may likewise affect the final resistance of the grind and the coffee bed.
[0031] The coffee machine according to the invention is highly suitable for use as part of a more comprehensive system for brewing coffee and for dosing powder. The bean grinder is controlled by the coffee machine and is read and, if necessary, controlled remotely by means of an electric communication connection. For this purpose, a particular embodiment of the coffee machine according to the invention is characterized in that the control unit is provided with communication means capable of and arranged to form an electric communication connection with a remotely located server device, adapted to generate operational measurements to the server device and adapted to receive one or more control parameters from the server device.
[0032] The method for adjusting a grinding device according to the invention is characterized in that the adjustable grinding body is brought to an extreme position corresponding to the maximum clearance between the two grinding bodies until a corresponding stop is encountered by the adjusting means in the relevant extreme position, and the adjustable grinding body is reset from the extreme position to the position to be given. Since the clearance between the two grinding bodies is first brought to a fully open position before returning to the value to be set, possible (grinding) residues between the grinding bodies are prevented from preventing the taking of the extreme position of the set range.
[0033] Thereby, the extreme positions encountered can be reliably regarded as extreme limits of the set range and can then be used as a reference to move from there to the to-be-applied position. In a further particular embodiment, the method is characterized in that the adjustment means comprises an actuator, which can be driven, which is controlled by a control unit, which reads the to-be-applied position of the actuator from a memory means, in particular from a non-volatile electronic memory means, and which controls the actuator on the basis of the to-be-applied position retrieved from the memory means. The adjustment is here performed fully automatically under the control of the control unit.
[0034] The invention will be further elucidated hereinafter with reference to exemplary embodiments and the accompanying drawings, in which: [Brief description of the drawings]

[0036] However, it is noted here that the figures are purely schematic and are not all drawn to scale, in particular some dimensions may be somewhat exaggerated for clarity, and corresponding parts are designated in the figures with the same reference numbers.
[0037] Fig. 1 shows a grinding device 100 according to the invention, which is mounted on or part of a chassis or frame 10 of a coffee machine, into which the grinding device is integrated. The grinding device is here neatly covered by a plastic cover or casing 12. The further construction of the coffee machine is considered to be well known to the average skilled person and is therefore not further shown in the figures. The coffee machine (also called coffee dispenser or espresso machine) comprises above the shown grinding device a coffee bean storage (here not further shown) which continuously feeds coffee beans to the grinding device at the top side via a central inlet opening 105.
[0038] This open side flows out into the grinding housing 101, which is further shown in Fig. 2 and Fig. 3 without the casing 12. The grinding housing 101 is substantially made of aluminium and externally carries at its underside a plastic protective cover 102 which is fixedly snapped onto it. Internally, the grinding housing 101 contains a set of grinding discs 115, 125 (see also Fig. 4) between which the supplied coffee beans are received. A worm or screw 104 rotates during operation and forces the beans into the narrow gap between the respective grinding surfaces of the two grinding discs 115, 125. The beans are ground into fine coffee grounds (powder) by the relative rotation of the grinding discs. The grinding surfaces of the two grinding discs comprise, for this purpose, an ingenious pattern of cutting edges which act on the coffee beans. The obtained powder leaves the grinding device, is dispensed into the outflow opening 103, via a coffee (powder) tube 13 (provided for this purpose) into the extraction chamber of the coffee machine.
[0039] The first grinding body 110 and the second grinding body 120 each include a grinding disc 115, 125. The first and lower of the two grinding bodies (see also FIG. 5) will be further described below. The grinding bodies are motor-driven and both rotatably and axially adjustable suspended in a grinding housing 101. A drive shaft 111 of the grinding body 110 also carries a worm or screw 104.
[0040] The second and upper one 120 of the two grinding bodies is mounted inversely in the grinding housing 101 in a stationary manner. This second grinding body 120 is shown separately in FIG. 4. On the side facing the first grinding body 110, the second grinding body comprises a grinding disc 125. Just like the grinding disc 115 present on the opposite side, this grinding disc 125 is made of hardened steel or ceramic material, whereby it is strong enough and wear-resistant to perform a large number of grinding cycles on the coffee beans. The grinding disc 125 is completely enveloped by a collar body 122 of suitable plastic or another suitable material, with a serrated peripheral edge, which provides a comfortable grip for the user. The grinding disc 125 and the collar body 122 are durably connected to each other by a set of screws 123. In this embodiment, a glass filled polyamide is applied to the collar body 122 for strength and durability.
[0041] The second grinding body 120 is locked into the grinding housing 101 by means of bayonet connections 126, 127, whereby the grinding body 120 can be easily installed and released and now has a defined end position. For this purpose, bayonet ribs 126 are provided on the grinding body 120, which are received and locked into the bayonet grooves 116, which cooperate with the bayonet ribs 126 and are formed for this purpose in the inner wall of the grinding housing 101. Projections 127 are provided on the bayonet ribs 126 at their outer ends, by means of which the ribs 126 eventually come into abutment with the edge of the bayonet groove 116 and therefore always assume this defined end position during installation of the grinding body 120.
[0042] A straight edge 121 on the collar 122 further contributes to this defined end position, which is behind the corresponding straight edge 16 of the spout adapter 14, such that the coffee tube 13 is mounted by the spout adapter 14 onto the grinding housing 101 at the location of the outflow opening 103. Due to the relative geometry and cooperation, the spout adapter 14 of the coffee tube 13 thus prevents the removal of the second grinding body part 120. In order to remove the second grinding body part 120 from the grinding housing 101, the tube 13 with the adapter 14 must therefore first be removed. Conversely, the adapter 14 can only be slid over the edge of the outflow opening 103 if the second grinding body part 120 is installed in its extreme (bayonet) position in the grinding housing 101, such that the edge 121 is completely behind the edge 16 of the adapter 14. The latter ensures that the second grinding body part 120 will always have to assume a fixed and identical position within the grinding housing 101 .
[0043] For the purpose of vibration and sound damping of the device, the plastic collar 122 which encases the relatively hard grinding disc all around comprises a bayonet rib 126. For the purpose of further vibration damping, a relatively soft, flexible lining 128 of a suitable rubber (optionally natural rubber), such as NBR rubber (nitrile butadiene rubber), is now arranged on the collar 122. This lining 128 comprises a set of damping bodies 129 by means of which the lining lies against the stop projections 127 of the bayonet ribs 126. These damping bodies 129 thus form relatively soft stop cushions which, in the mounted state, lie against the edges of the bayonet grooves 116 in the grinding housing 101.
[0044] The grinding housing 101 is positioned on the drive platform 200 but may, if desired, be completely removable from the drive platform 200 together with the grinding bodies 110, 120. For this purpose, the grinding housing 101 is supported by a set of wings 106 which are thereby removably arranged on a set of legs 210 of the platform 200. The platform 200 provides space for a main motor 250 which is connected to a central gear ring 255 via a fixed straight gear transmission inside the platform. An axial toothing is here slidably received at the free outer end of the drive shaft 111 of the first grinding body 110, which provides an almost clearance-free but axially adjustable drive of the first grinding body 110 and the worm or screw 104. The drive shaft 111 is bearing mounted and fastened by means of a suitable roller bearing assembly 112 in the bottom 107 of the grinding housing 101. Internally, the drive shaft 111 carries the grinding discs 115 and the worm or screw 104 of the first grinding body part 110.
[0045] The grinding housing bottom 107, like the walls of the grinding housing 101, is made of aluminum and is connected to the aluminum walls of the grinding housing 101 by interposing screw threads 114. This provides a leak-proof closure of the powder, which nevertheless allows axial adjustment of the bottom 107 together with the bearing assembly 112 inside the grinding housing 101. Externally, an adjustment device 130 is connected to the grinding housing bottom 107 (see also FIG. 7). It is a plastic ring, which is connected to the bottom 107 for radial adjustment by a set of screws 131 and radial slots 132 provided therein.
[0046] The adjustment device comprises a protrusion 135 on one side and a toothed collar 133 on the other side on which the transmission 230, 265 of the drive platform 200 engages. A controllable actuator is provided in or on the drive platform 200, in this embodiment formed by a (second) electric motor 260, the controllable actuator comprising this transmission 230, 265. This can be a stepper motor or a more conventional electric motor, which can be driven counterclockwise or clockwise in a specific number (fractions) of turns (steps), the more conventional electric motor being provided with a tachometer sensor, which records (counts) the number (fractions) of turns of the drive shaft of the motor 260 and generates this as an electronic value.
[0047] In combination with the transmission ratio of the transmission 230, the number of turns of the output shaft of the motor 260 determines the number of turns of the toothed drive shaft 265, which rotation is transmitted by the toothed drive shaft 265 to the gear ring 133 of the adjustment device 130. Finally, the transmission ratio between the drive shaft 265 and the two teeth of the gear ring 133 determines the angular adjustment of the bottom 107 in the grinding housing 101, to which the adjustment device 130 is non-rotatably connected. Thus, the axial adjustment of the bottom 107 of the grinding housing 101, and thereby the axial adjustment 115 of the first grinding body part 110 connected thereto, can be derived from the pitch of the screw thread 114 between the bottom 107 and the wall 101 of the grinding housing.
[0048] Thus, the mutual gap (clearance) S between the stationary grinding disc 125 and the so adjustable grinding disc 115 can be set and adjusted precisely by controlling the second electric motor 260. The actuator 230 is driven by a control unit of the coffee machine, which is not further shown. Also, a tachometer signal is supplied to it or a calculated control signal is generated by it. The control unit can thus give the electric motor 230 a precise number (fraction) of turns, which are transmitted via the transmissions 230, 265 to the toothed collar 133 on the bottom part 107. As explained above, this results in the rotation of the bottom part 113 inside the grinding housing 101, together with the roller bearing assembly 112 and the second grinding body part 120 therein. This rotation is translated into an axial displacement of the bottom 113, together with the roller bearing assembly 112 and the second grinding body 120, in the grinding housing 101 at the screw connection 114. The clearance S between the so-adjustable driven grinding disc 115 of the first grinding body 110 and the stationary grinding disc 125 of the second grinding body 120, which is fixedly received in the grinding housing 101, can thereby be adjusted.
[0049] According to the invention, this adjustability is limited to a predefined set range, the extreme positions of which are determined and provided in the device by at least one stop 108, 109. In this embodiment, the grinding housing includes two of such stops in the form of a set of shoulders 108, 109 on the outer end of a groove 134 recessed into the wall of the grinding housing (see FIG. 7). A protrusion 135 of the adjusting device runs in this groove 134 and, when reaching its outer end, is struck by a stop surface against the associated shoulder 108, 109. The resistance encountered thereby is converted into an increase in the consumption of power by the electric motor, which is registered by the control unit as a sign of reaching the extreme boundaries of the set range, corresponding to the minimum or maximum clearance between the two grinding discs 115, 125.
[0050] At least one extreme position of the second grinding body part 120, i.e. the one corresponding to the maximum clearance, is thus recorded. This is not hindered by the presence of possible grinding residues between the grinding disc 115 and the grinding disc 125 and can thereby be determined in a reliable manner. Like the minimum clearance, this maximum clearance is a fixed value (known by the control unit) in the device, which is determined by construction. This therefore provides a suitable reference, and an absolute value for the clearance S between the two grinding discs 115, 125 from the suitable reference can be given by the control unit by driving the actuator over a corresponding number (fractional) of turns.
[0051] The adjusting device 130 has a scale division 137 on its periphery (see also FIG. 6) and is hidden behind a plastic casing part 102 of the grinding housing 101. This casing part 102 is mounted (snap-fastened) on the grinding housing 101 at its underside. A window 108 is provided here exposing a part of the scale division 137. The actual clearance between the two grinding discs 115, 125 and thereby the actual grind size of the grinding device can thus be read off as an absolute value via the window.
[0052] Thus, depending on the desired coffee product to be produced by the machine (e.g. coffee or espresso), not only is it possible for the machine to dispense more or less coffee powder, but it is also possible for the machine to adapt the grind size in a fully automatic manner. Together with the pressure (by which the coffee powder is compressed into a compact bed), these are the most important values that influence the coffee-water contact time during extraction, which in turn is the key value that determines the quality and flavor of the final coffee product. Figure 8 shows the controls for a coffee machine diagrammatically.
[0053] Based on the pre-entered brewing algorithm, a preset R1 is given to the coffee machine by the control unit CPU according to the coffee product to be prepared. This preset contains, for example, among others, the grind size M to which the grinding device is set, as well as the determined amount D of coffee to be introduced and dispensed into the extraction chamber of the brewing device of the machine. The received coffee powder is compressed there and made into a bed between a pair of pistons by a given pressing force F. Hot water having a determined temperature T and water pressure P is then guided by a pump through the coffee bed so as to obtain therefrom a coffee extract. According to the invention, the device now records the flow rate V (flow rate) of the liquid flow in the device. This flow rate is recorded as volume per unit time by suitable sensors (flow sensors) in the liquid conduits of the device (for example the water conduit from the pump to the extraction chamber and / or the product conduit from the extraction chamber to the outlet of the machine).
[0054] The coffee-water contact time can be calculated from the liquid flow V so known when the determined volume of coffee product is being dispensed. If this differs from the standard value for the relevant coffee product, a fine adjustment R2 is used to intervene therein. This fine adjustment comprises, for example, the correction of the pump pressure P in the case of a controllable pump and / or the adjustment of an adjustable resistance R in the form of a control of a throttle in the product conduit. Thus, the liquid flow V can still be readjusted and corrected by the device, which contributes significantly to the quality, flavor and concentration of the coffee product to be prepared. A central control unit CPU receives said signals and measured values V and controls the various components based on the brewing algorithm.
[0055] The control unit CPU is here inter alia linked to communication means by which an electric communication connection C to a remotely located server device S can be formed, from which the operating parameters and inter alia the brewing algorithm R1 can be obtained and operating values V can be generated. Thus, fine-tuning R2 found necessary to achieve a desired coffee-water contact time can be translated, either in the machine or remotely (or both), into changes in the presettings R1 of, for example, grind size M, dosage D and pressing force F, so as to be able to limit these in the future. The precise and absolute setting of the grind size M in the grinding device described above now makes it possible to provide absolute values to a number of machines, thereby simplifying their central management and control.
[0056] Although the invention has been further elucidated above with reference to only a single exemplary embodiment, it will become clear that the invention is in no way limited thereto. On the contrary, many variants and embodiments are still possible for the skilled person within the scope of the invention. Thus, instead of an electric motor, an indexed linear actuator can also be applied for the drive of the adjustable grinding body. Instead of a driven and controlled actuator, for example, an adjustment screw can also be applied as an adjustment means for manual adjustment of the grinding size. In all cases, a concrete (at least detectable) limit of the setting range provides a reliable criterion from which an absolute value for the clearance between the two grinding discs can be given according to the invention.
