Abstract
Description
[Technical field]
[0001] The present invention relates to a lighting device. [Background technology]
[0002] Lighting apparatus (such as LED spotlights or downlights) are widely known and are typically used as lighting devices (i.e., devices that illuminate an area by emitting light from one or more lighting units or light sources).
[0003] For example, it is known to provide wireless control functionality to such lighting devices by integrating an RF-based wireless communication interface and control circuitry within a spotlight. In this manner, the lighting device may be configured to transmit and / or receive wireless control signals for controlling one or more operational aspects of the lighting device via a wireless communication link. That is, LED spotlights / downlights with integrated RF wireless control functionality are known. Summary of the Invention [Problem to be solved by the invention]
[0004] However, problems with RF signal transmission / reception may adversely affect control functions and / or performance. For example, LED spotlights / downlights typically include a metal support frame (i.e., external housing), typically referred to as a "metal can", for mounting on a support surface. Such a metal support frame is for fire protection, for example, when the spotlight / downlight is mounted on a wooden ceiling or roof. However, it also encloses the RF communication components, thus reducing the RF signal transmission / reception strength.
[0005] Furthermore, LED spotlights / downlights are commonly adapted to be tiltable, i.e., to allow rotation of the lighting unit relative to the support frame about an axis of rotation (thereby allowing, for example, the angle of illumination to be adjusted by a user). Such tilting / rotation of the lighting unit may cause instability in RF performance by changing the orientation of the RF antenna.
[0006] Belgian Patent No. 1026717(A1) discloses a movable fixture system comprising a base, a yoke rotatably connected to the base, a fixture rotatably connected to the yoke, the fixture adapted to include at least one light source, at least one actuator adapted to rotate at least one of the yoke and the armature about a yoke axis and about an armature axis, and a wireless communication interface. [Means for solving the problem]
[0007] The invention is defined by the claims.
[0008] According to an embodiment of an aspect of the present invention, there is provided a lighting device adapted to be connected to a luminaire support frame. The lighting device comprises: a housing, the housing including a connection interface configured to facilitate connection of the housing to the luminaire support frame and defining an axis of rotation, such that when connected to the support frame, the housing is configured to enable rotation of the lighting device relative to the luminaire support frame about the axis of rotation; a wireless communication interface coupled to the housing and configured to transmit or receive wireless control signals via a wireless communication link; and a control circuit coupled to the housing and configured to control operation of the lighting device and to wirelessly transmit or receive the wireless control signals to or from the communication interface. The wireless communication interface includes a first antenna and a second antenna spaced apart from and disposed on opposite sides of the axis of rotation.
[0009] Therefore, the objective of the proposed concept is to provide schemes, solutions, concepts, designs, and devices related to improving the communication performance of lighting devices with wireless control capabilities. In particular, embodiments of the present invention propose an arrangement of a first antenna and a second antenna that may improve the RF communication performance of a tiltable lighting device. Depending on the tilt / rotation position of the lighting device in use, one of the first antenna and the second antenna may have better (i.e., stronger) RF signal transmission / reception strength than the other. In this way, the RF signal transmission / reception strength of the lighting device may be maintained regardless of the tilt / orientation during use.
[0010] In particular, it is proposed that a lighting device for connecting to a luminaire support frame (e.g., a metal can) may be provided with a first antenna and a second antenna spaced apart from and arranged on either side of a rotation axis of the lighting device. Such a proposal may therefore address the problem of RF signal shielding (caused by the luminaire support frame, which is typically metallic) by employing two antenna lines on either side of the lighting device. A control circuit of the lighting device may then select between signals received via the two antenna lines and use the antenna line with better signal transmission / reception strength.
[0011] The proposed arrangement of the first and second antennas may also provide the benefit of avoiding any adverse effects on the optical performance (e.g., intensity / efficiency of light emission) of the lighting device.
[0012] Therefore, the embodiment may provide the advantage that the transmission / reception strength of the RF signal may be maintained regardless of the tilt angle of the lighting device in use. For example, by employing two antennas spaced apart on either side of the rotation axis of the lighting device, one of the antennas may always protrude / extend outward from the luminaire support frame, thus achieving a stronger RF signal strength. The antenna with the stronger RF signal strength may be easily identified and thus used for transmitting and / or receiving the RF signal. As an example, Reception Signal Strength Indicator (RSSI) values may be obtained and compared for the first antenna and the second antenna. If the difference between the two RSSI values exceeds a predefined threshold N (e.g., 5), the antenna with the larger RSSI value may be selected for use as the primary antenna.
[0013] In other words, the embodiments propose a lighting device for tiltable connection to a luminaire support frame, the lighting device being tiltable about a rotation axis when connected to the luminaire support frame, the lighting device having a wireless communication interface including a first antenna and a second antenna spaced apart from the rotation axis and disposed on either side of the rotation axis, the arrangement of the first antenna and the second antenna may improve the transmission / reception strength of the wireless communication signal.
[0014] In some embodiments, the connection interface may include a first opening and a second opening disposed on opposite sides of the housing, with the rotation axis passing through the first opening and the second opening. In this manner, the lighting device may be provided with a female portion of the connection interface (for connection with a male portion provided on the luminaire support frame).
[0015] In other embodiments, the connection interface may include a first protrusion and a second protrusion disposed on opposite sides of the housing, and the rotation axis overlaps with the first opening and the second opening. Thus, the lighting device may be provided with a male portion of the connection interface (for connection with a female portion provided on the luminaire support frame).
[0016] Hence, embodiments may be provided with a relatively simple connection interface that facilitates connection of the housing to a luminaire support frame, the connection allowing rotation of the lighting device relative to the luminaire support frame about an axis of rotation, i.e. embodiments of the proposed lighting device may be connected to a luminaire support frame to provide a tilting downlight or spotlight.
[0017] In an exemplary embodiment, the rotation axis may be located in an illumination plane extending in the illumination direction of the lighting device. For example, when employed in a downlight with a metal housing embedded in a (pseudo) ceiling, the illumination plane may be a substantially vertical plane, and the rotation axis may be located across the illumination plane in a substantially horizontal direction parallel to the ceiling. In that case, the first antenna and the second antenna may be disposed on either side of the illumination plane. That is, the antennas may be positioned on either side of a vertical plane that extends downward through the center of the lighting device (when installed as a downlight).
[0018] In some embodiments, the rotation axis may be located in a light exit plane that is substantially perpendicular to the illumination plane. For example, when employed in a downlight, the light exit plane may be a substantially horizontal plane that is located across a downward opening on the housing. In this manner, the light exit plane may intersect the vertical illumination plane of the downlight configuration. The first antenna and the second antenna may intersect the light exit plane, for example, such that the antennas extend outward and downward from the opening in the housing.
[0019] Still further, the housing may include a light exit aperture configured to emit light when the lighting device is in use, the light exit aperture being substantially parallel to the light exit plane, i.e. the housing may be provided with an opening through which light may be emitted. In that case, the antenna may protrude or extend outwardly through the opening in the housing.
[0020] The lighting device may further include a light diffuser configured to cover at least a portion of the light exit opening, and the first antenna and the second antenna may contact or penetrate the light diffuser. In this manner, the antennas may extend to (or penetrate) the light diffusing cover of the lighting device, such that at least a portion of each antenna extends / protrudes outside the housing for improved transmission / reception strength of the RF signal.
[0021] In some embodiments, the control circuitry may be configured to determine signal transmission / reception strength values for each of the first and second antennas, and selectively employ either the first or second antenna for transmitting / receiving control signals based on the determined signal transmission / reception strength values. In this manner, embodiments may be configured to automatically detect and use an antenna having a transmission / reception strength, thereby ensuring that optimal wireless communication efficiency is always maintained.
[0022] Some embodiments may further comprise a frusto-conical reflector adapted to reflect light emitted from the lighting device in use. The first and second antennas may be connected to opposite sides of the reflector. For example, the antennas may be coupled to an inner (or outer) wall of the reflector at diametrically opposed positions.
[0023] In some embodiments, the lighting device may also further comprise a heat sink, and the first antenna and the second antenna may be spaced at least 2 mm, preferably at least 4 mm, from the heat sink. For example, embodiments may be configured such that the distance between the antenna and the nearest metal body or housing is 4 mm or greater to ensure proper RSSI values.
[0024] The wireless control signals may include radio frequency (RF) control signals and, therefore, embodiments may be configured for use in conjunction with RF wireless communication systems.
[0025] In some embodiments, the lighting device may further comprise a light source (such as a light emitting diode (LED)) coupled to the housing. In that case, the control circuitry may be configured to control the emission of light from the light source. That is, an embodiment may be provided with a light source. However, it will be appreciated that other embodiments may be supplied without a light source, such that, for example, after the point of supply of the lighting device, a conventional light source may subsequently be connected to the lighting device.
[0026] The embodiments may be employed in conjunction with a conventional / existing luminaire support frame (e.g., an existing metal can). That is, the embodiments may be provided separately from the luminaire support frame, for example, such that the embodiments may then be subsequently connected to an existing / conventional luminaire support frame. In this manner, the proposed embodiments may be employed to provide improved and / or extended functionality to a conventional and / or pre-installed luminaire support frame. Other embodiments may be provided in conjunction with a luminaire support frame.
[0027] Therefore, according to another aspect of the invention there may be provided a luminaire comprising a luminaire support frame and a lighting device according to the proposed embodiment connected to the luminaire support frame, the connection being configured to enable rotation of the lighting device relative to the luminaire support frame about an axis of rotation such that, in use, the lighting device is tiltable relative to the luminaire support frame.
[0028] As an example, the lighting fixture support frame may include a metal housing (such as a metal can). With the proposed arrangement of the first and second antennas, when the lighting device is in an inclined position relative to the metal housing, one of the first and second antennas may not be shielded by the metal housing.
[0029] Therefore, an improved tiltable downlight / spotlight with wireless control function can be provided by the proposed concept.
[0030] These and other aspects of the invention will be apparent from and elucidated with reference to the embodiments described hereinafter. [Brief description of the drawings]
[0031] For a better understanding of the present invention, and to show more clearly how the same may be carried into effect, reference will now be made, by way of example only, to the accompanying drawings in which: [Figure 1] FIG. 1 is an exploded view showing various components of a tiltable lighting fixture according to a proposed embodiment. [Figure 6] 1 shows an assembled lighting device according to a proposed embodiment. DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE PREFERRED EMBODIMENTS
[0032] The present invention will now be described with reference to the figures.
[0033] It should be understood that the detailed description and specific examples, while indicating exemplary embodiments of the devices, systems and methods, are intended for purposes of illustration only and are not intended to limit the scope of the invention. These and other features, aspects and advantages of the devices, systems and methods of the present invention will become better understood from the following description, the appended claims and the accompanying drawings. The mere fact that certain measures are recited in mutually different dependent claims does not indicate that a combination of these measures cannot be used to advantage.
[0034] Variations to the disclosed embodiments can be understood and can be effected by those skilled in the art in practicing the claimed invention, upon study of the drawings, the disclosure, and the appended claims. In the claims, the word "comprising" does not exclude other elements or steps, and the indefinite article "a" or "an" does not exclude a plurality.
[0035] It should be understood that the figures are only schematic and are not drawn to scale, and that the same reference numerals are used throughout the figures to denote the same or similar parts.
[0036] The present invention proposes an idea to improve the wireless communication performance of lighting devices with integrated wireless communication capabilities.
[0037] In particular, embodiments may provide a tiltable lighting device configured to be tilted about a rotation axis, the tiltable lighting device having a first antenna and a second antenna spaced apart from and disposed on either side of the rotation axis. Such an arrangement of the antennas overcomes the problem of shielding of wireless communication signals (e.g., caused by the luminaire support frame) by ensuring that, in use, one of the antennas extends / protrudes beyond the (signal-shielding) support frame regardless of the tilt angle of the lighting device. That is, when the lighting device is in a tilted position relative to the luminaire support frame, one of the first antenna and the second antenna may not be shielded by the luminaire support frame.
[0038] In particular, the proposed concept may provide improved wireless communication efficiency / performance for tilting lighting devices with wireless control capabilities. Thus, the embodiments may be used in connection with tilting downlight or spotlight devices and / or provide improved tilting lighting fixtures.
[0039] Therefore, the embodiments may provide an improvement in RF signal transmission / reception strength for lighting devices with integrated wireless communication capabilities. For example, the proposed concept may provide the advantage that RF signal transmission / reception strength may be maintained regardless of the tilt angle of the lighting device in use. For example, by employing two antennas spaced apart on either side of the rotation axis of the lighting device, one of the antennas may always protrude / extend outward from the luminaire support frame and therefore may not be blocked by a signal blocking portion of the support frame. The antenna with the stronger RF signal strength may be easily identified and therefore used for RF signal transmission and / or reception. As an example, RSSI values may be obtained and compared for the first antenna and the second antenna.
[0040] By way of example only, the exemplary embodiments may be utilized in many different types of tilting, downlight, spotlight directional lighting fixtures.
[0041] 1-3, there is shown a tiltable lighting fixture according to one embodiment of the present invention. Specifically, Fig. 1 is an exploded view showing various components of the tiltable lighting fixture according to the proposed embodiment, Fig. 2 is a schematic circuit diagram of the circuitry provided on the RF board of the tiltable lighting fixture, and Fig. 3 is a cross-sectional view of the tiltable lighting fixture in use (and in a tilted orientation).
[0042] The tiltable luminaire comprises a luminaire support frame 1 (which in this embodiment comprises a metal housing 1) and a lighting device 10 connected to the luminaire support frame 1 (via a hook 100).
[0043] The connection between the luminaire support frame 1 and the lighting device 10 is configured to allow rotation of the lighting device relative to the luminaire support frame 1 about an axis of rotation such that, in use, the lighting device 10 is tiltable relative to the luminaire support frame 1 (as shown in FIG. 3).
[0044] The lighting device 10 includes a housing 2 having a connection interface 2A configured to facilitate connection of the housing 2 to a luminaire support frame 1. The connection interface 2A defines an axis of rotation 15 such that, when connected to the support frame 1, the housing 2 is configured to enable rotation of the lighting device 10 relative to the luminaire support frame 1 about the axis of rotation 15.
[0045] The lighting device 10 also includes a wireless communication interface 5, 6 coupled to the housing 2. In this case, the wireless communication interface includes a first antenna 5 and a second antenna 6. The wireless communication interface is configured to transmit or receive wireless control signals via a wireless communication link. In this example, the wireless control signals include RF control signals. In other embodiments, wireless control signals in other suitable frequency ranges may be employed.
[0046] The lighting device also includes an RF control circuit 3 coupled to the housing 2 and configured to control the operation of the light source 50 of the lighting device and to wirelessly transmit or receive wireless control signals between the first antenna 5 and the second antenna 6.
[0047] The control circuitry 3 and the light source 50 are coupled to a heat sink 7 for improved dissipation of heat. In this case, the heat sink 7 is generally frusto-conical in shape so as not to collide / contact with the housing 2 when rotating about the axis of rotation 15. The heat sink 7 is preferably made of a thermally conductive material (i.e. a material with high thermal conductivity) and therefore typically comprises (at least in part) a metal. This has the drawback of possibly further shielding the reception / transmission of wireless communication signals (thus further increasing the importance of the proposed concept of improving wireless communication efficiency / performance).
[0048] The lighting device 10 also includes a plastic reflector 9 which is adapted to reflect light emitted from the light source 50 in use. The reflector is generally frusto-conical in shape and is configured to reflect light towards a light exit aperture 20 (described below) through which the lighting device 10 is configured to emit light in use.
[0049] According to the proposed concept, the first antenna 5 and the second antenna 6 are arranged on either side of the axis of rotation at a distance from the axis of rotation. In particular, as shown in Fig. 3, the first antenna 5 and the second antenna 5 are mounted on either side (i.e. diametrically opposite positions) in a groove in the outer wall of the reflector 9. The size of the reflector 9 is adapted so that the first antenna 5 and the second antenna 5, respectively, are spaced about 4 mm from the inner wall of the heat sink 7.
[0050] The control circuit 3 is configured to determine signal transmission / reception strength values for each of the first antenna 5 and the second antenna 6, and selectively employ either the first antenna 5 or the second antenna 6 for transmitting / receiving control signals based on the determined signal transmission / reception strength values.
[0051] The connection interface includes a first opening and a second opening 16 arranged on either side of the housing 2, and a rotation axis 15 passes through the first opening and the second opening 16. The rotation axis 15 is located in an illumination plane LP extending in an illumination direction LD of the lighting device 10. The first antenna 5 and the second antenna 6 are arranged on either side of the illumination plane LP.
[0052] The rotation axis 15 also lies in a light exit plane LE that is substantially perpendicular to the illumination plane LP.
[0053] The housing includes a light exit opening 20 through which the lighting device is configured to emit light from the light source 50 when in use, the light exit opening being substantially parallel to the light exit plane. The lighting device also includes a light diffuser 8 configured to cover at least a portion of the light exit opening 20. In this embodiment, the first antenna 5 and the second antenna 6 are positioned to intersect the light exit plane LE. When intersecting, the first antenna 5 and the second antenna 6 contact or penetrate the light diffuser 8.
[0054] As shown in Figure 3, in use, when the lighting device is in an inclined position relative to the metal housing 1, one of the first antenna 5 and the second antenna 6 is not shielded by the metal housing 1. Specifically, in the exemplary illustration of Figure 3, the second antenna 6 is not shielded by the metal housing 1 as a result of protruding / extending outwardly from the metal housing 1, and therefore achieves a higher RSSI value than the first antenna 5.
[0055] It will be appreciated from the above description that it is proposed to position a first and a second antenna wire on either side of the axis of rotation of a tiltable lighting device. Such an arrangement may have the benefit of ensuring that one antenna wire is located outside of a signal shielding portion (e.g., a metal housing) of the lighting device regardless of the tilt direction of the lighting device.
[0056] The control circuitry of the lighting device may automatically detect which antenna has better signal reception / transmission strength and then use the detected antenna as the primary antenna.
[0057] As an example, the RF control circuit may be as shown in FIG. 2, and the control signal Ctrl_1 and the control signal Ctrl_2 may control the use of the first antenna 5 (Antenna_A) and the second antenna 6 (Antenna_B) as shown in Table 1 below.
[0058] [Table 1]
[0059] The criteria for selecting a primary antenna may be based on the difference in the RSSI values for the antennas. For example, the RSSI values for each antenna may be received and compared, and if the difference in the RSSI values exceeds a predetermined threshold N (e.g., 0.5≦N≦8), the antenna having the larger RSSI value may be selected for use as the primary antenna.
[0060] Regarding antenna design, the reader will understand that the length of the antenna should comply with 1 / 4λ. Therefore, for RF control signals, the length of the antenna should be about 25-30 mm. It may also be preferred that the antenna be made of a metal material, such as copper or copper alloy, aluminum alloy, iron alloy, etc. Furthermore, it may also be preferred that the distance between the antenna and its nearest metal body or housing exceeds a preferred minimum, e.g., about 2 mm, 4 mm or more.
[0061] Examples of the different performance of the first and second antennas arranged according to the proposed concept are shown in Figures 4 and 5. Figure 4 is a graph of the antenna efficiency (Y axis) plotted against the signal frequency (X axis) for values in the range of 2.4 GHz to 2.5 GHz as obtained for the first antenna of the embodiment of Figures 1 to 3 (when tilted 35° from the axis of the vertical optical plane so that the second antenna extends outside the housing as shown in Figure 3). Figure 5 is a graph of the antenna efficiency (Y axis) plotted against the signal frequency (X axis) for values in the range of 2.4 GHz to 2.5 GHz as obtained for the second antenna of the embodiment of Figures 1 to 3 (when tilted 35° from the axis of the vertical optical plane so that the second antenna extends outside the housing as shown in Figure 3).
[0062] As shown in Fig. 4, the efficiency of the first antenna (Antenna_A) has a value of 58.5% at a signal frequency of 2.45 GHz. Fig. 5, on the other hand, shows that the efficiency of the second antenna (Antenna_B) has a value of 75.2% at a signal frequency of 2.45 GHz. That is, as a result of the inclination of the lighting device (relative to the luminaire support frame), the second antenna is not shielded by the luminaire support frame, so the second antenna has a larger RSSI value and can be selected for use as the primary antenna.
[0063] Referring now to FIG. 6 , an assembled lighting device according to the proposed embodiment is shown, with the lighting device 10 in a tilted configuration (i.e. the lighting device has been rotated about an axis of rotation such that the antenna protrudes / extends downwardly beyond the light exit opening of the housing 2).
[0064] The assembled lighting device may be provided (with or without a light source) for connection to a lighting fixture support frame. In this manner, the lighting device may be positioned for connection to an existing / conventional lighting fixture support frame. Thus, the embodiment of FIG. 6 may provide improved and / or enhanced functionality to conventional and / or pre-installed lighting fixture support frames.
[0065] Of course, it will be appreciated that other embodiments may be provided with a luminaire support frame, i.e. the lighting device may be assembled with the luminaire support frame before being provided for use.
[0066] By studying the drawings, the disclosure, and the appended claims, variations to the disclosed embodiments can be understood and can be effected in practicing the claimed invention by those skilled in the art. In the claims, the word "comprising" does not exclude other elements or steps, and the indefinite article "a" or "an" does not exclude a plurality. A single processor or other unit may fulfill the functions of several items recited in the claims. The mere fact that certain means are recited in mutually different dependent claims does not indicate that a combination of these means cannot be used to advantage. In the case where a computer program is discussed above, the computer program may be stored / distributed in a suitable medium, such as an optical storage medium or a solid medium, provided together with or as part of other hardware, but may also be distributed in other forms, such as via the Internet or other wired or wireless telecommunication systems. It should be noted that when the term "adapted to" is used in the claims or the specification, it is intended to be equivalent to the term "configured to." Any reference signs in the claims should not be construed as limiting the scope.
[0067] The flowcharts and block diagrams in these figures illustrate the architecture, functionality, and operation of possible implementations of systems, methods, and computer program products according to various embodiments of the present invention. In this regard, each block in the flowcharts or block diagrams may represent a module, segment, or portion of instructions, including one or more executable instructions for implementing the specified logical functions. In some alternative implementations, the functions noted in the blocks may be performed in a different order than noted in the figures. For example, two blocks shown in succession may in fact be executed substantially simultaneously, or the blocks may be executed in the reverse order, depending on the functionality involved. It should also be noted that each block of the block diagrams and / or flowchart diagrams, and combinations of blocks in the block diagrams and / or flowchart diagrams, may be implemented by a dedicated hardware-based system that performs the specified functions or acts, or by a combination of dedicated hardware and computer instructions.
