Abstract
Description
[Technical field]
[0001] The following description relates generally to ostomy pouch closure systems, and more particularly to drainable ostomy pouch closure systems. [Background technology]
[0002] Ostomy pouches for collecting waste material are used by patients who have had surgery such as a colostomy, ileostomy, or bladder colostomy. Ostomy pouches typically include flat, opposing side walls secured together along their periphery to define a collection cavity. One of the side walls has an opening formed therein for receiving a stoma, the opening including a fastening means or system, such as an adhesive barrier, for securing the pouch to a user such that waste material passing through the stoma is received within the cavity.
[0003] Some ostomy pouches may be closed end pouches designed for single use, in which the entire periphery is sealed together and the pouch is discarded after being substantially filled with stoma waste. Other ostomy pouches are drainable pouches that include a drainage opening at the lower end that can be closed during waste collection, but can be opened to drain waste from the pouch after a period of use. Such drainable pouches are disclosed, for example, in U.S. Patent No. 5,393,633 to Nolan and U.S. Patent No. 5,393,633 to Jensen et al., which are incorporated herein by reference in their entireties.
[0004] The drainage opening of a drainable pouch is typically formed at the end of a narrowed neck portion that has a closure means (or closure system) that keeps the drainage opening sealed until the waste material has been drained from the pouch. Some closure systems include devices such as clamps, as in the Nolan patent referenced above, or conventional wire ties or wraps that secure the neck portion in an upwardly wrapped position.
[0005] Drainable pouches must be able to drain easily without the risk of soiling clothing or the surroundings. The pouch must also be easy to close reliably after being drained, so that the risk of unpleasant odors is substantially reduced, and easy to clean after draining and before reclosing. Most importantly, the closure system must allow a reliable seal when closed, to minimize the risk of leakage.
[0006] Many different closure system solutions are known that facilitate closure, cleaning and drainage operations, such as systems that include a fold-over neck portion having a plurality of integral spring-like biasing members, see U.S. Patent No. 5,399,433 to Villefrance et al. and U.S. Patent No. 5,399,433 to Friske et al., which are assigned to a common assignee with the present application and are incorporated herein by reference in their entireties.
[0007] Another drainable pouch having an integral closure system is U.S. Patent No. 5,393,333 to Friske et al., which includes four closure members and a two-part fastening system, where one closure member is provided at the bodyside pouch outlet and three closure members are provided at the distal pouch outlet. This patent is assigned to a common assignee with the present application and is incorporated herein by reference in its entirety.
[0008] All of these systems work well, but there are significant tolerances for the positioning of the reinforcing ribs that must be met for the closure system to function properly. [Prior art documents] [Patent documents]
[0009] [Patent Document 1] U.S. Pat. No. 3,523,534 [Patent Document 2] U.S. Pat. No. 4,411,659 [Patent Document 3] U.S. Patent No. 7,879,015 [Patent Document 4] U.S. Pat. No. 8,672,907 [Patent Document 5] U.S. Patent No. 9,011,395 Summary of the Invention [Problem to be solved by the invention]
[0010] It would therefore be desirable to provide an ostomy appliance, such as an ostomy pouch, with a closure system that uses reinforcing ribs to provide a proper closure. Desirably, in such a system, the location and alignment of the closure members or reinforcing ribs relative to one another is less critical than in known closure systems. Further desirably, such a system provides a secure closure system that allows the pouch to be easily opened and emptied. [Means for solving the problem]
[0011] According to one embodiment, a drainable ostomy appliance includes sidewalls of a flexible sheet material sealed to one another along a portion of their respective peripheries to define a collection cavity. The sidewalls are a body-side wall and a non-body-side wall. An inlet is formed in the body-side wall.
[0012] The sidewalls define a downwardly extending neck portion terminating in a vent where the sidewalls are not sealed to one another The vent is closed by folding the neck portion upwardly and opened by spreading the neck portion downwardly to vent the contents from the cavity.
[0013] The closure system includes a first portion at the body side wall, a second portion at the non-body side wall, and a fastening system, the first portion of the closure system including at least one body side closure member and the second portion of the closure system including at least one non-body side closure member including an enlarged head portion at an end thereof.
[0014] In the open state, the neck portion is expanded. In the closed state, the neck portion is folded upward at least twice and secured in a closed state using a fastening system. The side walls of the neck portion are folded in a first fold around the enlarged head portion of the at least one non-body side closure member.
[0015] In one embodiment, the at least one body side closure member includes a first closure member and a second closure member. The first closure member is proximal to the exhaust opening and the second closure member is distal from the exhaust opening. The first closure member and the second closure member define a gap therebetween. The at least one non-body side closure member includes a third closure member having an enlarged head portion forming a wipe seal at an end proximal to the exhaust opening. In such an embodiment, the first closure member is folded over the third closure member with an edge of the first member engaging the enlarged head portion through the side wall, and the first closure member, the second closure member and the third closure member are folded over the non-body side wall in a tight fold to seal the exhaust opening. The first and second closure members may be provided with preferential folds. Such folds may be provided as slits formed in portions of the first and second closure members. In one embodiment, the third closure member may be formed of a material that is softer than the material from which the first and / or second closure members are formed.
[0016] In another embodiment, the at least one non-body closure member includes a third closure member disposed proximal to the exhaust opening and having an enlarged head portion at an end distal from the exhaust opening. The at least one body closure member includes a first closure member disposed spaced from the exhaust opening. In the closed state of such an embodiment, the third closure member is folded over the first closure member in a first fold, and the first and third closure members are folded over the non-body wall in a second fold.
[0017] In embodiments, each of the at least one bodyside closure member and the at least one non-bodyside closure member can be formed from a stiff, flexible, spring-like material, which can be, for example, a polymeric material such as polyethylene (PE) or ethylene vinyl acetate (EVA).
[0018] The enlarged head portion can be formed having a variety of shapes, such as a rounded arrowhead shape, an inverted rounded arrowhead shape, a semicircular protrusion extending from the face of the third closure member, etc.
[0019] In an embodiment, each of the at least one body closure member is attached to the body sidewall such that a portion of each of the at least one body closure member is adhered to the body sidewall and another portion of each of the at least one body closure member is not adhered to the body sidewall. Similarly, each of the at least one non-body closure member can be attached to the non-body sidewall such that a portion of each of the at least one non-body closure member is adhered to the non-body sidewall and another portion of each of the at least one non-body closure member is not adhered to the non-body sidewall.
[0020] In embodiments where the at least one body-side closure member includes a first closure member and a second closure member, the portions of the first closure member and the second closure member that are not adhered to the body-side wall are proximate to each other, and in embodiments where the at least one non-body-side closure member includes a third closure member, the portion of the third closure member that is not adhered to the non-body wall is proximate to the enlarged head portion.
[0021] The ostomy appliance may include a two-part connector for fastening to the user's body.

DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE PREFERRED EMBODIMENTS
[0024] One or more embodiments are shown in the drawings and will be described below, with the understanding that the disclosure may be embodied in various forms, but that the disclosure is to be considered merely as illustrative and is not intended to be limited to any specific embodiments described or illustrated.
[0025] FIG. 1 illustrates a drainable ostomy appliance or pouch 10, showing a body-facing side 12, and showing an ostomy pouch closure system 14 according to one embodiment. The drainable pouch includes an outer wall (i.e., non-body side wall) 16 and a body side wall 12, which are joined along their periphery 18 to define a collection cavity 20 for collecting stoma output. The pouch 10 includes an opening 22 for receiving the stoma and a member 24 that secures the pouch 10 to a user, the member 24 surrounding the opening 22. The securing member 24 can be, for example, a unitary barrier or a two-part barrier including mating interlocking rings (not shown). Unitary and two-part barriers will be understood by those skilled in the art.
[0026] Drainable pouch 10 also has a downwardly extending neck portion 26 terminating in a drainage opening or spout 28 for draining contents collected in cavity 20 after a period of use. Drainage spout 28 is closed during use by folding neck portion 26 upwardly and securing it in the folded-up position.
[0027] The side walls 12, 16 are formed of a suitable flexible sheet material, such as a polymeric film, which may be a monolayer or multilayer film. Each of the walls 12, 16 may be formed of a continuous piece of flexible film so as to define the entire pouch 10, including the neck portion 26. Alternatively, the walls 12, 16 of the neck portion 26 may be formed of a flexible film that is separate from the walls 12, 16 of the body of the pouch 10. That is, the walls of the neck portion 26 may be formed of a different polymeric film than the walls of the pouch body.
[0028] 2, there is shown a body side view of the lower portion 30 of the pouch 10. The peripheral edges 18 of the walls 12, 16 are sealed along their respective sides, but are unsealed at the bottom, as shown at 32. This unsealed area defines an outlet 28 through which stoma waste can be emptied from the pouch 10.
[0029] The closure system 14 includes a first portion 34 at the body-side wall 12 and a second portion 36 at the non-body-side wall 16. A first body-side closure member 38 and a second body-side closure member 40 are disposed on the body-side wall 12, with the first body-side closure member 38 proximal to the exhaust opening 28 and the second closure member 40 distal from the exhaust opening 28. A gap 42 is defined between the first body-side closure member 38 and the second body-side closure member 40.
[0030] 3, a view of the non-body wall 16 of the lower portion 30 of the pouch 10 is shown. The non-body wall 16 includes a closure member 44, referred to as the third closure member. The non-body (third) closure member 44 overlies, at least in part, the body side second closure member 40. In an embodiment, the third (non-body) closure member 44 includes a wiper seal 46, which is formed as an enlarged head portion 48, such as the rounded arrowhead shaped wiper 50 shown in FIGS. 4A-4C and 6A, as shown. The enlarged head portion 48 is downstream of the third closure member 44 (i.e., toward or near the outlet 28) and aligns with the gap 42 between the first closure member 38 and the second closure member 40.
[0031] In one embodiment, the closure members 38, 40, 44 are formed from a stiff, yet flexible, spring-like polymeric material. The members 38, 40, 44 are generally flat and arranged in a linear, parallel relationship to one another. The material is somewhat rigid, but can bend or flexed to open the discharge opening 28. That is, when the closure members 38, 40, 44 are in a relaxed state, they hold the opening 28 relatively closed. However, if the ends 52 of the members 38, 40, 44 are squeezed together (across the centerline A of the discharge opening 28), the closure members 38, 40, 44 will bend or flex to open the discharge opening 28. 28When the closure members 38, 40, 44 are pressed toward each other (squeezed toward each other), the members 38, 40, 44 flex or bow outwardly to open the discharge opening 28. Suitable materials for the closure members 38, 40, 44 include polyethylene (PE), ethylene vinyl acetate (EVA), and the like. The closure member 44 may be formed of a material that is softer than the material from which the members 38 and 40 are formed. Other materials will be recognized by those skilled in the art.
[0032] To facilitate outward bending or bowing, in embodiments, the first closure member 38 and the second closure member 40 may include preferential folds 54. The preferential folds 54 may be formed as partial slits in the members 38, 40, which are partial in that they do not extend completely through the members 38, 40. As seen in FIG. 2, the folds 54 of the first bodyside member 38 closer to the outlet 28 are closer to each other than the folds 54 of the second bodyside member 40. In this manner, when the ends 52 of the members 38 / 40, 44 are squeezed toward each other to open the outlet 28, the closure members 38, 40 bend or flex to form a funnel-shaped outlet 56 for emptying the pouch 10 along the lines 54.
[0033] 4A-4C, the folding of the pouch neck portion 26 to close the pouch discharge opening 28 will now be described. Figure 4A shows the pouch 10 with the discharge opening 28 in a flattened position. As discussed above, the bodyside closure members 38, 40 are spaced apart from one another by a gap 42, the non-bodyside closure member 44 overlies, at least in part, the second bodyside closure member 40, and the enlarged head portion 48 is aligned with or overlies the gap 42.
[0034] 4B, as the first fold (indicated at 58) is formed, the first closure member 38 is folded over the third closure member 44. The pouch material in the space or gap 42 between the first member 38 and the second member 40 is configured to overlie and compress the wiper seal 46, but prevent the wiper seal 46 from flattening or folding. An inner edge 68 of the first closure member 38 engages the enlarged head portion 48 through the material of the pouch or side walls 14, 16, causing the (exit) fold 58 to create tension in the material of the pouch 10 at the fold 58.
[0035] 4C, as the second fold (indicated at 60) is formed, the first member 38, second member 40 and third member 44 are folded over the non-body sidewall 16. The tight fold such as at 60 and the stretching of the pouch 10 material at the fold 60 between the second member 40 and the third member 44 help to establish a seal at the pouch outlet 28.
[0036] In an embodiment, the closure members 38, 40, 44 are adhered to the pouch 10, for example, by adhesive 62. In an embodiment, the members 38, 40, 44 need not be completely adhered to the pouch 10. As seen in FIG. 5, in the direction of the length of the pouch 10, i.e., the centerline A of the outlet 28, 28 The entire closure members 38, 40, 44 need not be completely adhered to the pouch 10 in the direction along the crease 56. The portions of the first member 38 and the second member 40 proximal to each other, as shown at 64, can be left unadhered to the pouch 10, or the members 38, 40 can be completely adhered to the pouch 10. The portion of the third member 44 proximal to the enlarged head portion 48, as shown at 66, can be left unadhered to the pouch 10. This allows the film of the pouch 10 to elastically deform, e.g., stretch, between the first member 38 and the second member 40 (as at the crease 58) when the first fold 58 is formed, and to stretch, between the second member 40 and the third member 44 (as at the crease 60) when the second fold 60 is formed.
[0037] 6A-6C, an embodiment of the enlarged head portion of the wiper seal 46 is shown. As mentioned above, in one embodiment, the head portion 48 has a rounded arrowhead shape or a closed bracket shape, as seen in FIG. 6A. In an alternative embodiment, the enlarged head portion 148 can have an inverted shape, i.e., an inverted arrowhead shape or an open bracket shape, as seen in FIG. 6B. Yet another embodiment is shown in FIG. 6C. In this embodiment, the enlarged head portion 248 has a semicircular shape formed on one side of the closure member 244. Thus, the wiper seal 46 of the enlarged head portion 48, 148, 248 is flush with the plane of the closure member 44 (P as seen in FIG. 6A). 44 ) or asymmetrical relative to the plane of the member.
[0038] 8A-8C, a closure system 314 according to another embodiment is shown. The closure system 314 can include a body closure member 340 attached to the body wall 12 via an adhesive 62 and a non-body closure member 344 attached to the non-body wall 16 via an adhesive 62. In this embodiment, the non-body closure member 344 can be located closer to the outlet 28 and the body closure member 340 can be spaced apart from the outlet 28 such that the body closure member 340 does not overlap the non-body closure member 344. The non-body closure member 344 can include an enlarged portion 348 on the upstream side (i.e., away from or away from the outlet 28). The enlarged portion 348 can have various shapes as shown in FIGS. 6A-6C. In the embodiment of FIGS. 8A-8C, the enlarged portion 348 can have a semicircular shape formed on a surface of the closure member 344 facing the non-body wall 16.
[0039] The folding of the pouch neck portion 26 including the closure system 314 may be similar to the folding of the pouch neck portion 26 including the closure system 14 shown in Figures 4A-4C. In the embodiment of Figures 8A-8C, the non-body closure member 344 is folded over the body closure member 340 in a first fold, as shown in Figure 8B, where the body wall 12 and the non-body wall 16 are folded over the enlarged portion 348 of the non-body closure member 344. The body closure member 340 and the non-body closure member 344 are then folded together over the non-body wall 16 in a second fold, as shown in Figure 8C.
[0040] It will be appreciated that, unlike known closure systems, the present closure system 14, 314 is less dependent on positional tolerances between the first and second (body side) closure members 38, 40, 340 and the third (non-body side) closure member 44, 344. That is, alignment of the body side closure member 38, 40, 340 and the non-body side closure member 44, 344 is less critical than in prior known closure systems because the present closure system 14, 314 utilizes a fold between the closure members in combination with the wiper seal 46 formed by the enlarged head portion 48, 148, 248, 348.
[0041] Although not shown in Figures 1-5 and 8A-8C as it is known in the art, it will be understood that the ostomy pouch closure system 14, 314 also includes a fastening system that secures the pouch neck portion 26 in the folded closed position after the second fold, e.g., as shown in Figures 4C or 8C. In some embodiments, the ostomy pouch closure system 14, 314 may include a two-part fastening system including first and second fastening strips, such as hook-and-loop fasteners. In one embodiment, the closure system 14, 314 may include a flap 70 attached to the non-body wall 16 upstream of the non-body closure member 44. In this case, the flap includes a first fastening strip and the second (body) closure member 40, 340 includes a second fastening strip configured to engage the first fastening strip to secure the folded neck portion in the closed position as shown in Figure 7. Alternatively, the second (body side) closure member 40, 340 may be replaced with a second fastener strip. In another embodiment, the second fastener strip may be attached to the body side wall 12 adjacent the second (body side) closure member 40, 340. In this case, the pouch neck portion 26 may be configured to be folded three times (a third fold after the second fold shown in FIG. 4C or FIG. 8C) and secured in the closed position by engaging a first fastener strip provided on the flap 70 with the second fastener strip.
[0042] All patents referenced herein are hereby incorporated by reference in their entirety, whether or not specifically indicated in the body of this disclosure.

Conversely, any reference to plural items shall include the singular, where appropriate. In addition, various features described with respect to any of the above-described embodiments may be used with, implemented in, or substituted for features in any of the other embodiments described above.
[0044] From the foregoing, it will be appreciated that numerous modifications and variations may be effected without departing from the true spirit and scope of the novel concepts of the present invention. It is to be understood that no limitations with respect to the specific embodiments illustrated are intended or should be inferred. The present disclosure is intended to cover, by the appended claims, all such modifications that are within the scope of the claims.
