DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE PREFERRED EMBODIMENTS
[0008] For purposes of description herein, terms such as "top," "bottom," "right," "left," "rear," "front," "vertical," "horizontal," and derivatives thereof, refer to the present invention as oriented in FIG. 1. However, it is to be understood that the present invention may assume various alternative orientations, unless expressly specified to the contrary. It is also to be understood that the specific devices and processes illustrated in the accompanying drawings and described in the following specification are merely exemplary embodiments of the inventive concepts defined in the appended claims. Hence, specific dimensions and other physical characteristics relating to the embodiments disclosed herein are not to be considered as limiting, unless expressly recited in the claims.
[0009] As illustrated in FIGS. 1-6, reference numeral 10 generally refers to a tamper-proof actuator incorporated within one or more portions of a vehicle to prevent unauthorized access to or unauthorized tampering with various components of the vehicle. Utilizing the tamper-proof actuator 10, tampering and theft may be deterred and at least partially prevented by requiring a specific AC signal 12 that may be filtered and verified by the tamper-proof actuator 10. According to various aspects of the device, a tamper-proof actuator 10 for a vehicle typically includes a valid input 14 that includes a power source 16 configured to deliver an input current 18 through a circuit 20. A high pass filter 22 is positioned within the circuit 20. The high pass filter 22 is configured to reduce or eliminate certain non-conforming components 24 of the input current 18 that are outside of a predetermined current range. This predetermined current range may be measured by a specific signal frequency, a specific signal amplitude, various voltages, and other similar signal components and characteristics. A matching component 26 of the input current 18 within a predetermined current range, typically in the form of a particular AC signal 12, is not filtered or substantially not filtered by the high pass filter 22 and is passed through the circuit 20 as an output current 28 to a transistor 32 or other similar switch 30. The transistor 32 is positioned within the tamper-proof actuator 10, and the transistor 32 provides for delivery of an actuation current 50 from an actuation power source 52 to the respective actuator 34, activating the respective actuator 34. Using the high pass filter 22, the respective actuator 34 may be operated only when the output current 28 from the high pass filter 22 is received by the transistor 32. The output current 28 matches or substantially matches the particular AC signal 12 or its matching component 26. The high pass filter 22 for the tamper-proof actuator 10 includes a capacitor 36 and a resistor 38 that adjust the output current 28 to the switch 30, typically in the form of a transistor 32 or a portion of the transistor 32. Capacitor 36 and resistor 38 are positioned in a series configuration such that unfiltered output current 28 is directed away from resistor 38 along a path with less resistance 40 to switch 30 .In certain embodiments of the device, high pass filter 22 also includes a diode 66 to provide a path for output current 28 and / or operating current 50 in a desired direction while also preventing one or both of these currents from flowing in the opposite direction.
[0010] 1-4, the current filtering function of the high pass filter 22 allows the output current 28 to travel through a transistor 32, such as a MOSFET transistor. The transistor 32 activates upon receiving the output current 28. When the transistor 32 is activated, the transistor 32 allows an operating current 50 to be delivered from an operating power source 52 to operate a respective actuator 34. The respective actuator 34 may be in the form of any one of a variety of operating mechanisms within the vehicle that are attached to operating components within the vehicle. Such operating mechanisms may be included within a shift-by-wire mechanism for a transmission, a park lock mechanism for a transmission, an ignition starter, a lock for a door, or any other similar respective actuator 34 that is incorporated within an aspect of the vehicle to be used to prevent tampering and / or theft of the vehicle.
[0011] 1-4, the high pass filter 22 of the tamper-resistant actuator 10 is configured to filter the mismatch components 24 of the input current 18, e.g., components consisting of DC current 60, as well as components consisting of AC signal 12 outside of a predetermined current range. When the input current 18 reaches the capacitor 36 of the high pass filter 22, the capacitor 36 reduces, rejects, or otherwise eliminates the mismatch components 24, preventing these mismatch components 24 from reaching or appreciably affecting the switch 30 for the tamper-resistant actuator 10. Thus, as illustrated in FIGS. 3 and 4, when a DC current 60 is applied to the circuit 20 for the tamper-resistant actuator 10, the capacitor 36 reduces this DC current 60 significantly or completely as a mismatch component 24, such that no significant output current 28 is provided to the switch 30 or any other downstream components of the circuit 20. The resulting effect is that the DC current 60 is not permitted to operate the respective actuator 34. The mechanism associated with the respective actuator 34 is then deactivated. It should be understood that the electrical readings and values incorporated within Figures 1-4 are exemplary in nature. Depending on the design of the high pass filter 22, the actual readings and values may vary.
[0012] Conversely, as illustrated in FIGS. 1 and 2, the input current 18 may include a particular AC signal 12 that is an adaptive component 26 or may include an adaptive component 26. The adaptive component 26 of the AC signal 12 that is within a predetermined current range is allowed to pass through the capacitor 36 due to the high pass filter 22. The resistor 38 for the high pass filter 22 provides a path with a lower resistance 40 in the direction of the transistor 32. Thus, the resistor 38 prevents the AC adaptive component 26 of the input current 18, also referred to as the output current 28, from passing to the ground connection 70. Rather, the output current 28 is guided to the transistor 32. When the transistor 32 is activated, the output current 28 activates the transistor 32. Conversely, the transistor 32 provides the delivery of the operating current 50 from the operating power source 52 required to operate the respective actuators 34 for the mechanical or electrical components of the vehicle. Using only the appropriate AC signal 12 with the adaptive component 26 of the input current 18 allows the activation and operation of the respective transistors 32, actuators 34, and associated components of the vehicle.
[0013] 1 and 3, the high pass filter 22 includes a capacitor 36 and a resistor 38 arranged in a series configuration in the circuit 20 for the tamper-resistant actuator 10. The circuit 20 also includes a transistor 32 positioned between the capacitor 36 and the actuator 34. Utilizing the high pass filter 22, a predetermined current range for the input current 18 can generate an output current 28 that includes an AC signal 12 that is or includes a matching component 26. This matching component 26 or components 26 have particular characteristics, such as frequency, amplitude, and other properties that limit or prevent degradation as the input current 18 moves through the capacitor 36.
[0014] 1-4, in an exemplary embodiment of the device, the predetermined current range may be in the form of an AC signal 12 having a voltage within a predetermined voltage range or having a voltage above a predetermined minimum voltage. Furthermore, in a particular embodiment of the device, the high pass filter 22, in filtering the input current 18, may allow the output current 28 having a frequency higher than a particular cut-off frequency to pass through the capacitor 36 and travel towards the transistor 32. Alternatively, currents such as the DC current 60 having a frequency lower than the cut-off frequency are reduced, rejected or substantially eliminated. These incompatible components 24 and reduced currents are rejected or blocked by the capacitor 36 and are not passed to the transistor 32. Thus, the high pass filter 22 filters the incompatible components 24 of the input current 18 to allow only compatible components 26 having a voltage, frequency and / or amplitude within the predetermined current range to pass through the circuit 20 to operate the respective actuators 34. As described above, components outside this predetermined current range are reduced, rejected or substantially eliminated so as not to cause any operation of the respective actuators 34.
[0015] Utilizing this tamper-resistant actuator 10, an individual attempting to tamper with a particular vehicle may utilize an external power source 16 to attempt to operate the respective actuators 34 associated with the tamper-resistant actuator 10. Such tampering is known to be accomplished through the use of a battery or other similar external DC power source 16. Using a high pass filter 22, this DC current 60 can be filtered, reduced, or rejected to prevent it from operating the respective actuators 34. Only AC signals 12 that are compatible components 26 within a predetermined current range can be used to move through the high pass filter 22 to operate the respective actuators 34. Such AC signals 12 are configured to be provided only by components of the vehicle itself and not from external sources outside the vehicle. Typically, AC signals 12 and other similar currents that are within the predetermined current range are more difficult to reproduce. The self-commutated actuator with which the tamper-resistant actuator 10 is provided includes a switch 30, typically a transistor 32, and a high pass filter 22 that allows operation of a respective actuator 34 or rotation of a motor 84 in a particular direction only with a particular AC signal 12 that is within a predetermined current range. As discussed above, the high pass filter 22 reduces or otherwise rejects DC currents 60 and DC voltages that would operate the switch 30 but for the presence of the high pass filter 22.
[0016] 1-4, utilizing the high pass filter 22, the actuator 34 is operated to an actuated position only when an output current 28 is provided. As discussed above, the output current 28 is defined by the AC signal 12 having a matching component 26 that is within a predetermined current range. Again, this predetermined current range is set by a configuration of the capacitor 36 that allows a particular frequency or amplitude of current to pass therethrough to proceed to the transistor 32. The high pass filter 22 incorporated within the tamper resistant actuator 10 prevents the operation of the transistor 32 utilizing low frequency currents, such as the DC current 60 and the low frequency AC signal 12, that may be utilized by unauthorized users of the vehicle.
[0017] The tamper-resistant actuator 10 incorporating the transistor 32 and high pass filter 22 provides a compact mechanism for preventing externally available terminals of the vehicle from being powered. Such terminals may be associated with a motor 84, door locks, transmission, shift-by-wire mechanisms, park locks, or other similar externally accessible actuators.
[0018] 5 and 6, an exemplary operating mechanism 80 and circuit 20 are shown incorporating aspects of the tamper-resistant actuator 10. The tamper-resistant actuator 10 is typically incorporated into a printed circuit board (PCB) 82 for the operating mechanism 80. The device illustrated in FIG. 6 includes a motor 84 that is activated only when an output current 28 from a high pass filter 22 is received by a transistor 32 for activating a switch 30 that activates and deactivates the motor 84. Activation of the motor 84 operates various gear mechanisms 86, which in turn operate a mechanical interface 88 for any one of a variety of devices. As mentioned above, these devices may include, but are not limited to, locking mechanisms, shut-out mechanisms, and other similar mechanisms that may be used to prevent access or use of vehicles and other electrical and mechanical fixtures and devices. The exemplary circuit 20 illustrated in FIG. 6 includes a high pass filter 22 for the tamper-resistant actuator 10 that receives an input current 18. As mentioned above, the high pass filter 22, typically located between the valid input 14 and the transistor 32, reduces at least a portion of the input current 18. The portion of the input current 18 exhibiting a predetermined current range passes through the high pass filter 22 to define an output current 28 that is delivered to the transistor 32. The transistor 32 receives the output current 28 and places the transistor 32 in an active state. This active state enables the transistor 32 to operate a switch 30, typically positioned between the high pass filter 22 and the transistor 32. When the switch 30 is activated, an actuation current 50 is delivered to the actuation assembly. In the case of the exemplary circuit 20 illustrated in FIG. 6, the actuation assembly is a motor 84 for the actuation mechanism 80 illustrated in FIG. 5. In various aspects of the device, the valid input 14 can be in the form of some user input provided by a regular user to initiate the input current 18 through the circuit 20. The valid input 14 can also be in the form of an input provided by a system of the vehicle's mechanism that initiates the input current 18 through the circuit 20.The vehicle's systems or mechanisms that provide one or more of the available inputs 14 may operate automatically, or in response to some user interaction, or a combination thereof.
[0019] 6, the tamper-resistant actuator 10 may include various auxiliary capacitors 110 and auxiliary resistors 112 separate from the high pass filter 22 that are included in the circuit 20 to provide electromagnetic compatibility (EMC). Additionally, a transient voltage suppression (TVS) diode 114 may be incorporated to provide spikes in current that may travel through the circuit 20 with the tamper-resistant actuator 10. In certain aspects of the device, the high pass filter 22 may include a diode 66 positioned in a series relationship with the capacitor 36 and resistor 38 of the high pass filter 22. This diode 66 may operate to allow a current, such as the output current 28, to pass unidirectionally through the diode 66 to activate the actuator assembly.
[0020] 1-6, the tamper-proof actuator 10 may include an anti-tamper circuit 120 for operating the respective actuator 34. The anti-tamper circuit 120 may include a valid input 14 configured to provide an input current 18. A high pass filter 22 is positioned to receive the input current 18. A capacitor 36 of the high pass filter 22 operates to reduce a non-compliant component 24 of the input current 18 that is outside of a predetermined current range. A compliant component 26 of the input current 18 that is within the predetermined current range passes through the capacitor 36 of the high pass filter 22 and defines an output current 28. A resistor 38 of the high pass filter 22 typically directs the output current along a path with less resistance 40 toward a transistor 32. The transistor 32 receives the output current 28 and activates a switch 30. The switch 30 is typically activated when the output current 28 from the high pass filter 22 is received by the transistor 32. The switch 30 is in electrical communication with an actuator assembly, such as a motor 84 .
[0021] Utilizing conventional anti-theft techniques, unauthorized users of a vehicle are known to unplug certain actuators and power those actuators through the use of a battery or other external power source 16 that provides a DC current 60. Utilizing the tamper-resistant actuator 10 described above, such DC current 60 would be rejected by the high pass filter 22 and prevented from reaching the switch 30 and other components of the tamper-resistant actuator 10.
[0022] Utilizing the anti-tamper actuator 10, a circuit operated solution is achieved to prevent tampering and theft of a vehicle. The anti-tamper actuator 10 also provides a low cost solution that can be integrated into multiple components of a vehicle that can be combined and work together to provide multiple levels of tamper and theft protection for the vehicle.
[0023] According to various aspects of the device, the tamper-resistant actuator 10 described herein may be used in a variety of vehicle and non-vehicle applications, including, but not limited to, security devices for personal vehicles, fleets of vehicles, transportation vehicles, mass transit vehicles, aircraft, seaplanes, residential, commercial, and industrial structures, electrical appliances, computers, and other similar powered devices that also have mechanical operating systems.
