[0009] Hereinafter, preferred embodiments of the present disclosure will be described in detail with reference to the accompanying drawings.
[0010] FIG. 1 is a diagram for explaining the structure of an antenna module 1 according to an embodiment, where (a) is a schematic perspective view and (b) is a schematic plan view.
[0011] As shown in Fig. 1, an antenna module 1 according to one embodiment includes an antenna component 3 consisting of multiple antenna units 10 mounted on a circuit board 2, and a metal member 20 surrounding the multiple antenna units 10. In the example shown in Fig. 1, four antenna units 10 are arranged in an array in the x and y directions, but the number and arrangement of the antenna units 10 used are not limited to this. The gap between adjacent antenna units 10 in the x or y direction is S1. In addition, the gap between the antenna component 3 and the metal member 20 in the x or y direction is S2.
[0012] FIG. 2 is a schematic perspective view of the antenna unit 10. As shown in FIG.
[0013] As shown in FIG. 2, the antenna unit 10 includes dielectric layers 11 and 12, four antenna elements 14 formed on the dielectric layer 11, a plurality of ground pillars 15 surrounding the antenna elements 14, and a ring pattern 13 connecting the plurality of ground pillars 15 to each other. As a result, the antenna component 3 includes a total of 16 antenna elements 14. In the example shown in FIG. 3, the four antenna elements 14 are arranged in an array in the xy direction, but the number and arrangement of the antenna elements 14 included in one antenna unit 10 are not limited to this. In this way, the antenna component 3 including the 16 antenna elements 14 is divided into four antenna units 10, so that it is possible to prevent poor connection caused by the difference in thermal expansion coefficient between the antenna unit 10 and the circuit board 2. Moreover, since the four antenna elements 14 are integrated into one antenna unit 10, the increase in the number of components is also suppressed. The plurality of ground pillars 15 and the ring pattern 13 are examples of ground conductors.
[0014] FIG. 3 is a schematic perspective view of the metal member 20. As shown in FIG.
[0015] As shown in FIG. 3, the metal member 20 is a frame-shaped body and is made of a metal material such as copper. The metal member 20 may be made of a metal material entirely or may have a cavity therein, but at least the xy plane (upper surface 21) facing the same direction as the antenna element 14 must be made of a metal material. In the example shown in FIG. 4, a cavity 22 is provided in the metal member 20, and a portion constituting the xy plane (lower surface) facing the circuit board 2 is removed. The metal member 20 may have a structure as shown in FIG. 4. Furthermore, the xz and yz planes of the metal member 20 do not need to be flat surfaces, and may be fin-shaped as shown in FIG. 5. This improves heat dissipation characteristics.
[0016] FIG. 6 is a schematic diagram for explaining the internal structure of the antenna unit 10, and shows the state in which it is mounted on the circuit board 2. As shown in FIG.
[0017] As shown in FIG. 6, the antenna unit 10 has an antenna layer 81, a filter layer 82, and a wiring layer 83 laminated between the filter layer 82 and the antenna layer 81.
[0018] The antenna layer 81 has a dielectric layer 11 and a plurality of antenna elements 14 embedded in the dielectric layer 11. The antenna layer ANT also has a plurality of ground pillars 15 and a ring pattern 13 surrounding the antenna element 14 in a plan view seen from the lamination direction (z direction). The ground pillar 15 is a pillar-shaped conductor extending in the z direction so as to penetrate the dielectric layer 11. The filter layer 82 is composed of a dielectric layer 12 and a conductor pattern or chip components embedded in the dielectric layer 12. The dielectric material constituting the dielectric layer 12 has a higher dielectric constant than the dielectric material constituting the dielectric layer 11. LTCC can be used as the material of the dielectric layers 11 and 12. The filter layer 82 constitutes a mounting surface for the circuit board 2. The mounting surface is provided with signal terminals 31V and 31H and a plurality of ground terminals 32. The signal terminal 31V is a terminal for inputting and outputting a vertically polarized antenna signal, and the signal terminal 31H is a terminal for inputting and outputting a horizontally polarized antenna signal.
[0019] A ground pattern G1 is provided between the filter layer 82 and the wiring layer 83, and a ground pattern G2 is provided between the wiring layer 83 and the antenna layer 81. The ground pattern G2 is embedded in the dielectric layer 11. The ground pattern G1 is provided at the interface between the dielectric layer 11 and the dielectric layer 12. The ground patterns G1 and G2 are connected to a ground pillar 15 that penetrates the dielectric layer 11.
[0020] Filter circuits 19V and 19H are provided on the filter layer 82. The filter circuits 19V and 19H are bandpass filters and are connected to signal terminals 31V and 31H, respectively. The filter circuits 19V and 19H are surrounded by a plurality of ground pillars 18 in a plan view seen from the stacking direction. The ground pillars 18 are pillar-shaped conductors that extend in the z direction so as to penetrate the dielectric layer 12, and are connected to the ground pattern G1.
[0021] The wiring layer 83 is provided with feeding patterns 16V and 16H. One ends of the feeding patterns 16V and 16H are connected to filter circuits 19V and 19H, respectively, and the other ends of the feeding patterns 16V and 16H are connected to different planar positions of the antenna element 14 via feeding pillars 17V and 17H, respectively. The feeding patterns 16V and 16H are surrounded by a plurality of ground pillars 15 in a plan view seen from the stacking direction.
[0022] With this configuration, the antenna elements 14 function as patch conductors of a dielectric antenna. Since each antenna element 14 is surrounded by a plurality of ground pillars 15, mutual interference between the antenna elements 14 is suppressed.
[0023] FIG. 7 is a circuit diagram of the antenna unit 10, showing the portion relating to one antenna element 14.
[0024] 7, antenna signals SV and SH supplied to signal terminals 31V and 31H, respectively, are supplied to antenna element 14 via filter circuits 19V and 19H, respectively. The feeding positions of antenna signals SV and SH with respect to antenna element 14 are different by 90° from each other. As a result, antenna signals SV and SH are radiated from antenna element 14 into space.
[0025] Here, the height positions of the upper surface of the antenna unit 10 and the upper surface 21 of the metal member 20 are almost the same. The upper surface of the antenna unit 10 is defined by the tip position of the ground pillar 15 in the z direction, and is a second surface located on the opposite side of the mounting surface of the ground pillar 15 on the circuit board 2 of the antenna component 3, and its height position is H1. The upper surface 21 of the metal member 20 is a first surface located on the opposite side of the mounting surface of the metal member 20 on the circuit board 2. When a ring pattern 13 that connects the tips of the multiple ground pillars 15 is provided, the surface of the ring pattern 13 forms the upper surface of the antenna unit 10. The antenna element 14 may be provided at the height position H1, or may be provided at a position slightly lower than the height position H1 as shown in FIG. 6.
[0026] In this embodiment, the metal member 20 is provided so as to surround the antenna component 3 consisting of the multiple antenna units 10, and the height position H2 of the upper surface 21 is substantially equal to the height position H1 of the antenna units 10, so that the radiation characteristics of the outermost antenna element 14 are improved. In other words, if such a metal member 20 is not provided, the antenna element 14 located in the center is surrounded by other antenna elements 14, whereas the outermost antenna element 14 has a portion that is not adjacent to the other antenna elements 14, and therefore has a different radiation characteristic from the antenna element 14 located in the center. However, in this embodiment, the antenna component consisting of the multiple antenna units 10 is surrounded by the metal member 20, so that the metal member 20 functions in the same way as a dummy antenna element, and as a result, the characteristic difference between the multiple antenna elements 14 is reduced.
[0027] Here, the height positions H1 and H2 do not necessarily have to exactly match, but the difference therebetween is preferably λ / 20 or less, where λ is the wavelength of the electromagnetic wave radiated from the antenna element 14. This is because when the difference between the height positions H1 and H2 exceeds λ / 20, the difference in conditions from the antenna element 14 located at the center portion becomes large, resulting in a significant difference in radiation characteristics. Also, the magnitude relationship between the height positions H1 and H2 is not particularly limited, but it is preferable that the height positions H1 and H2 are the same or that the height position H1 is higher than the height position H2. In other words, it is preferable that the upper surface 21 of the metal member 20 is lower than the height position H1. This is because when H1 < H2, an inclination is likely to occur in the radiation pattern in the xz plane (E plane), and thus, considering tolerances and the like, it is desirable to design such that H1 ≥ H2 slightly.
[0028] Also, the width W (see FIG. 1(b)) of the upper surface 21 of the metal member 20 is preferably λ / 2 or more. This is because by setting the width W to λ / 2 or more, the metal member 20 functions almost in the same manner as a dummy antenna element. Here, the width W of the metal member 20 refers to the width in the x direction at the portion adjacent to the antenna element 14 located at the end in the x direction, and refers to the width in the y direction at the portion adjacent to the antenna element 14 located at the end in the y direction.
[0029] Furthermore, the gap S2 between the metal member 20 and the antenna unit 10 is preferably equal to or greater than the gap S1 between adjacent antenna units 10 and λ / 2 or less. This is because if the gap S2 is too narrow or too wide, the radiation characteristics of the outermost antenna element 14 will differ from those of the other antenna elements 14.
[0030] In addition, when a cavity 22 is provided inside the metal member 20, an electronic component 40 such as a semiconductor chip may be accommodated in the cavity 22 as shown in FIG. 8, which is a schematic cross-sectional view. This allows the surface of the circuit board 2 to be used more effectively, and allows the metal member 20 to function as a shielding case that shields the electronic component 40 from electromagnetic waves. The terminal electrodes 41 of the electronic component 40 are connected to a conductor pattern 43 provided on the surface of the circuit board 2 or inside the circuit board 2 via a land pattern 42 provided on the surface of the circuit board 2. Here, the conductor pattern 43G that supplies the ground potential may be connected to the metal member 20 via the land pattern 42. This allows the metal member 20 to function as a heat sink, thereby improving the heat dissipation characteristics of the circuit board 2. In particular, if the metal member 20 is fin-shaped as shown in FIG. 5, the function as a heat sink is significantly improved. Of course, it is not essential to connect the metal member 20 to the conductor pattern 43G, and the metal member 20 may simply be fixed to the circuit board 2 using an adhesive or the like. Even in this case, the heat dissipation characteristics of the circuit board 2 and the antenna component 3 are improved by the metal member 20.
[0031] As described above, the antenna module 1 according to this embodiment includes the metal member 20 surrounding the multiple antenna elements 14, and therefore it is possible to improve the radiation characteristics of the outermost antenna element 14 without adding a dummy antenna element. In particular, in this embodiment, the antenna unit 10 is thick because the filter layer FIL and the like are built into the antenna unit 10, and therefore the height position of the antenna element 14 is high with respect to the circuit board 2. In such a case, if the metal member 20 is not added, the radiation characteristics of the outermost antenna element 14 will change significantly, but according to this embodiment, the change in the radiation characteristics can be prevented by using the metal member 20. Moreover, since the metal member 20 is made of a single part, it is also possible to reduce the number of parts.
[0032] FIG. 9 is a schematic perspective view for illustrating the structure of an antenna module 1a according to a first modified example.
[0033] The antenna module 1a shown in Fig. 9 differs from the antenna module 1 shown in Fig. 1 in that four metal members 51-54 are used instead of the metal member 20. Since the other basic configurations are the same as those of the antenna module 1 shown in Fig. 1, the same elements are given the same reference numerals and redundant explanations will be omitted.
[0034] 9, metal members 51 and 52 are disposed on both sides in the x direction of antenna component 3, and metal members 53 and 54 are disposed on both sides in the y direction of antenna component 3. Even in this case, it is possible to make the characteristics of antenna element 14 located on the outermost side substantially coincident with those of antenna element 14 located in the center.
[0035] As illustrated in the antenna module 1a shown in FIG. 9, the metal member does not need to be a single part surrounding the antenna component 3, and may be made up of multiple parts arranged along each side of the antenna component 3. This increases the degree of freedom in design. Also, it is not essential to arrange the metal member 20 along all sides of the antenna component 3, and it is sufficient to arrange the metal member 20 along at least one side of the antenna component 3 according to the required characteristics. As an example, some of the metal members 51 to 54 may be omitted from the antenna module 1a shown in FIG. 9. Also, each of the metal members 51 to 54 may be further composed of multiple parts.
[0036] FIG. 10 is a schematic plan view for illustrating the structure of an antenna module 1b according to a second modified example.
[0037] The antenna module 1b shown in Fig. 10 differs from the antenna module 1 shown in Fig. 1 in that the antenna components are composed of 16 antenna units 60 arranged in an array in the x and y directions. Since the other basic configurations are the same as those of the antenna module 1 shown in Fig. 1, the same elements are given the same reference numerals and duplicated explanations will be omitted.
[0038] As shown in Fig. 10, the antenna unit 60 includes one antenna element 14 and multiple ground pillars 15 surrounding it. In other words, unlike the antenna unit 10 described using Fig. 2 etc., one antenna element 14 is assigned to one antenna unit 60. As exemplified by the antenna module 1b shown in Fig. 10, it is not essential that one antenna unit includes multiple antenna elements.
[0039] Furthermore, the number of antenna elements 14 arranged in the x direction does not need to be the same as the number of antenna elements 14 arranged in the y direction. For example, an array of 2×8 elements may be used.
[0040] Although the above describes preferred embodiments of the present disclosure, the present disclosure is not limited to the above-described embodiments, and various modifications are possible without departing from the spirit of the present disclosure, and it goes without saying that these modifications are also included within the scope of the present disclosure.
[0041] The technology according to the present disclosure includes the following configuration examples, but is not limited to these.
[0042] The antenna module according to the present disclosure comprises an antenna component including a plurality of antenna elements and ground conductors surrounding each of the plurality of antenna elements, and a metal member arranged adjacent to the ground conductor surrounding the outermost antenna element among the plurality of antenna elements.
[0043] This improves the radiation characteristics of the antenna element adjacent to the metal member.
[0044] The antenna component may have a configuration in which a plurality of antenna elements are arranged in an array, and the metal member may be disposed along at least one side of the antenna component, thereby improving the radiation characteristics of the plurality of antenna elements along the metal member.
[0045] The metal member may be arranged along each side of the antenna component. This improves the radiation characteristics of all the outermost antenna elements. In this case, the metal member may be made up of multiple parts arranged along each side of the antenna component, or may be made up of a single part surrounding the antenna component. The former increases the freedom of design, while the latter reduces the number of parts.
[0046] The width of the metal member may be at least half the wavelength of the electromagnetic wave radiated from the antenna element, which satisfactorily improves the radiation characteristics of the antenna element adjacent to the metal member.
[0047] The difference in height between the first surface located on the opposite side to the mounting surface of the metal member and the second surface located on the opposite side to the mounting surface of the antenna component of the ground conductor may be 1 / 20 or less of the wavelength of the electromagnetic wave radiated from the antenna element. This sufficiently improves the radiation characteristics of the antenna element adjacent to the metal member. In this case, the height of the first surface of the metal member may be equal to or less than the height of the second surface of the antenna component. This prevents the radiation pattern of the E-plane from being tilted.
[0048] The antenna component may be composed of a plurality of antenna units each including a plurality of antenna elements. This makes it possible to reduce the number of components while preventing poor connections caused by differences in thermal expansion coefficients. In this case, the gap between the metal member and the antenna component may be equal to or larger than the gap between the plurality of antenna units, and may be equal to or smaller than half the wavelength of the electromagnetic waves radiated from the antenna element. This sufficiently improves the radiation characteristics of the antenna element adjacent to the metal member.
[0049] The metal member may have a cavity therein, which allows an electronic component such as a semiconductor chip to be housed therein.
[0050] The antenna component may be a dielectric antenna, which allows the overall size to be reduced. EXAMPLES
[0051] Example 1 A circuit board 2 with a planar size of 120 mm x 120 mm was prepared, and four antenna units 10 were arranged in an array in the center of the circuit board. The configuration of the antenna units 10 is as shown in FIG. 2 etc., with four antenna elements 14 arranged in an array and each antenna element 14 surrounded by a plurality of ground pillars 15. The planar size of the antenna unit 10 is 10.6 mm x 10.6 mm, and the thickness is 2.2 mm. The gap S1 between the antenna units 10 is 0.7 mm. The polarization direction of each antenna element 14 is the y direction, the yz plane is the E plane, and the xz plane is the H plane.
[0052] Then, only the antenna element 14 at the position indicated by the symbol A in Fig. 1(b) was excited at 28 GHz, and the radiation pattern in the yz plane (E plane) was measured. The measurement results are shown in Fig. 11. Here, Fig. 11(a) shows the radiation pattern when the metal member 20 is not present, and Fig. 11(b) shows the radiation pattern when the metal member 20 is present. The thickness of the metal member 20 is 2.2 mm, the same as that of the antenna unit 10, and the width W is 5 mm (≒λ / 2). The gap S2 between the metal member 20 and the antenna component 3 is 0.7 mm.
[0053] As shown in Fig. 11(a), when there is no metal member 20, the antenna element 14 located at the corner experiences a large drop in gain at around -50°. In contrast, as shown in Fig. 11(b), it was confirmed that when the antenna component 3 is surrounded by the metal member 20, the drop in gain at around -50° is eliminated.
[0054] Example 2 In the configuration of Example 1, the change in the radiation pattern was measured when the thickness of the metal member 20, i.e., the height position H2 of the upper surface 21, was changed. The results are shown in Fig. 12. In Fig. 12, symbol B1 indicates the radiation pattern when the height position H2 is the same as the height position H1 (i.e., the same conditions as in Example 1), symbol B2 indicates the radiation pattern when the height position H2 is 500 µm (≒ λ / 20) higher than the height position H1, and symbol B3 indicates the radiation pattern when the height position H2 is 500 µm (≒ λ / 20) lower than the height position H1.
[0055] As shown in FIG. 12, it was confirmed that when the difference between the height positions H1 and H2 is about 500 μm (≈λ / 20), characteristics are obtained that are almost the same as when the height positions H1 and H2 are the same.
[0056] Example 3 In the configuration of Example 1, the change in the radiation pattern was measured when the width W of the metal member 20 was changed. The results are shown in Fig. 13. In Fig. 13, reference character C1 indicates the radiation pattern when the width W is 5 mm (≈ λ / 2) (i.e., the same conditions as in Example 1), reference character C2 indicates the radiation pattern when the width W is 2.5 mm (≈ λ / 4), reference character C3 indicates the radiation pattern when the width W is 10 mm (≈ λ), and reference character C4 indicates the radiation pattern when the metal member 20 is not present.
[0057] As shown in FIG. 13, the larger the width W of the metal member 20, the better the characteristics were obtained. However, there was no significant difference between the characteristics when the width W of the metal member 20 was λ and the characteristics when the width W of the metal member 20 was λ / 2, and it was confirmed that a sufficient effect was obtained if the width W was λ / 2 or more.
