Abstract
Description
[Technical field]
[0001] The present invention relates to a double-flowered Mandevilla plant and a method for producing the same. [Background technology]
[0002] Genus Mandevilla plants (also called Dipladenia) are climbing woody or erect herbaceous plants belonging to the family Apocynaceae, with about 130 species native to tropical America, for example from Mexico to Argentina.
[0003] Mandevilla plants are popular as horticultural plants because they produce beautiful flowers that last for a long period of time, and in recent years, many varieties have been developed through selective breeding. Varieties with double flowers are generally highly ornamental due to their beautiful appearance, and tend to be highly valued in horticulture.
[0004] To date, the only known double-flowered Mandevilla cultivar is "Rita Marie Green," a branch variation of "Alice du Pont" with bright red flowers (Patent Document 1). However, double-flowered Mandevilla cultivars remain extremely rare, and there is a need to develop new cultivars. [Prior art documents] [Patent documents]
[0005] [Patent Document 1] U.S. Plant Patent No. 6,300,547 Summary of the Invention [Problem to be solved by the invention]
[0006] Mandevilla plants have a unique floral structure, making artificial crossbreeding by artificial pollination technically difficult. Although there are more than 130 original species, only a dozen or so are used in horticulture. As mentioned above, "Lita Marie Green" is known as a double-flowered Mandevilla plant variety, but no double-flowered individuals were obtained from about 100 F1 individuals obtained by crossing with this variety, about 500 seedlings from the B1 generation obtained by backcrossing, or about 500 seedlings from the B2 generation obtained by the second successive backcrossing.
[0007] In addition, the conventional "Litamary Green" had several drawbacks, such as the fact that it was mainly distributed in large containers and it was difficult to produce flowering pots in small containers; it was a vine that grew large, making it unsuitable for distribution in small containers (the 4-inch pots that are mainstream in Europe and the United States); the leaf veins were very uneven and the leaves were hairy and had a poor texture, making it poorly aesthetic; and it took a long time for the plant to flower when propagated by cuttings.
[0008] An object of the present invention is to provide a novel double-flowered Mandevilla plant and a method for producing the same. [Means for solving the problem]
[0009] The present inventors have repeatedly propagated a total of more than 14,000 cuttings over the 16 years since the start of sales of the single-flowered Mandevilla plant variety "Cream Pink" (sold by Suntory Flowers Co., Ltd. under the name "Sun Parasol (registered trademark) Milky Pink"), and have now succeeded in producing "Double Pink", a variety with a pink flower color, as the only double-flowered mutant individual from the variety. The cultured seedlings of "Double Pink" were internationally deposited on October 14, 2022 at the National Institute of Technology and Evaluation, Patent Biological Deposit Center (NITE-IPOD) (Room 120, 2-5-8 Kazusa Kamatari, Kisarazu City, Chiba Prefecture) based on the Budapest Treaty (Identification: Sunpa421; Accession Number: FERM BP-22460). Even more surprisingly, after repeatedly collecting approximately 3,000 cuttings from "Double Pink," they discovered a branch with deep crimson double flowers, and succeeded in creating "Double Red," an even further double-flowering variety.
[0010] Specifically, the present invention is as follows. [1] A Mandevilla plant deposited at the National Institute of Technology and Evaluation, International Patent Organism Depositary (NITE-IPOD) under the accession number FERM BP-22460 or a descendant thereof. [2] A Mandevilla plant produced by vegetative propagation of the Mandevilla plant described in 1. [3] The Mandevilla plant described in 2, wherein the vegetative propagation is carried out by cuttings using a branch having at least one double flower. [4] The Mandevilla plant described in 3, wherein the branch having at least one double flower is a branch mutation. [5] A propagation material, a part of the plant body, a tissue or a cell of a Mandevilla plant described in any one of 1 to 4. [6] A method for producing a Mandevilla plant, comprising: A method comprising the step of providing a Mandevilla plant selected from the Mandevilla plants deposited at the National Institute of Technology and Evaluation, International Patent Organism Depositary (NITE-IPOD) under the accession number FERM BP-22460 or progeny thereof. [7] The method according to claim 6, further comprising a step of vegetatively propagating a Mandevilla plant deposited at the National Institute of International Trade and Industry (NITE-IPOD) under the accession number FERM BP-22460 or a progeny thereof. [8] The method according to claim 7, wherein the vegetative propagation is carried out by taking cuttings using a branch having at least one double flower. [9] The method according to claim 8, wherein the branch having at least one double flower is a modified branch.
[10] The method according to any one of 6 to 9, wherein the Mandevilla plant produced by the method is a double-flowered Mandevilla plant. Effect of the Invention
[0011] According to the present invention, it is possible to produce a novel double-flowered Mandevilla plant having superior characteristics compared to conventional double-flowered Mandevilla plants. Below, a comparison is shown between "Lita Marie Green", a conventional double-flowered Mandevilla plant variety, and "Double Pink", a double-flowered Mandevilla plant variety according to the present invention. The scientific name of "Lita Marie Green" is Mandevilla x amabilis, while the scientific name of "Double Pink" is Mandevilla sanderi, and the two are clearly distinguished as they belong to different species. "Litamary Green" is mainly distributed in large containers and it is difficult to produce flowering pots in small containers, but this variety "Double Pink" can be produced and distributed in 4-inch pots, which are mainstream in Europe and the United States. "Lita Marie Green" grows large as a vine and is unsuitable for distribution in small containers (the 4-inch pots that are mainstream in Europe and the United States). In contrast, this cultivar, "Double Pink," grows upright and does not or barely grows as a vine, so it is suitable for distribution in small containers (the 4-inch pots that are mainstream in Europe and the United States). The internode length of the middle part of "Lita Marie Green" is long, 15 to 20 cm on average, making it difficult to grow in a small container, whereas this cultivar "Double Pink" is narrower at 2 cm, making it suitable for 4-inch cultivation. A large number of cuttings can be produced from one parent plant, improving productivity. The veins of the 'Rita Marie Green' leaf are very uneven, and the leaves are hairy and rough in texture, making them less aesthetically pleasing, whereas the 'Double Pink' variety has no unevenness, and the leaf surface is smooth and glossy. - When cuttings of "Rita Marie Green" are planted at 44 weeks, the flowering time is 30 weeks for seedlings, whereas this variety "Double Pink" flowering time is 24 weeks, more than 6 weeks earlier, and is also more productive. Thus, the double-flowered Mandevilla plant variety of the present invention has extremely superior characteristics compared to conventional varieties. [Brief description of the drawings]

[0013] In one aspect of the present invention, there is provided a double-flowered Mandevilla plant, the double-flowered Mandevilla plant being a Mandevilla plant deposited with the National Institute of Technology and Evaluation, International Patent Organism Depositary (NITE-IPOD) under the accession number FERM BP-22460, or a progeny thereof.
[0014] As mentioned above, we have created "Double Pink," a pink-flowered variety, as the only double-flowered mutant individual from the conventional single-flowered Mandevilla variety "Cream Pink." The cultured seedling was deposited internationally on October 14, 2022 at the National Institute of Technology and Evaluation, Patent Biological Deposit Center (NITE-IPOD) (Room 120, 2-5-8 Kazusa Kamatari, Kisarazu City, Chiba Prefecture) under the Budapest Treaty (identification: Sunpa421; accession number: FERM BP-22460).
[0015] "Double flower" refers to the way in which the petals of a flower bloom overlap. In a double flower, more petals are lined up in the place where the stamens and pistils are lined up on the inside of the petals in a normal single flower, making it look like the flower is made up of only petals. Since wild plants usually have stamens and pistils, double flowers usually appear due to mutation. The inner petals of a double flower correspond to the stamens and pistils, and they become petals to form a double flower. In this specification, "double flowering" means such a characteristic of a flower, and the double-flowered Mandevilla plant of the present invention may have at least one double flower. A double flower typically includes a total of 10 petals, consisting of five petals in which the stamens have become petals, in addition to the five petals present in a normal single flower.
[0016] In the present specification, the term "progeny" includes self- or cross-pollination progeny of a Mandevilla plant deposited at the National Institute of Technology and Evaluation, Patent Organism Depositary (NITE-IPOD) under the accession number FERM BP-22460, and includes not only the first generation but all generations of progeny of a Mandevilla plant deposited at the National Institute of Technology and Evaluation, Patent Organism Depositary (NITE-IPOD) under the accession number FERM BP-22460. Furthermore, in the present specification, the term "progeny" includes those produced from a parent Mandevilla plant based on conventional techniques in plant breeding, and may include those produced by conventional breeding techniques such as vegetative propagation and seed propagation of a parent plant, tissue culture techniques for culturing cells, tissues, or organs of a plant, and gene recombination techniques that can directly introduce useful traits, as well as mutants such as branch mutations of a parent Mandevilla plant. Such progeny preferably have the desired characteristics, particularly double flowering, derived from the parent Mandevilla plant.
[0017] The Mandevilla plant according to the present invention can be produced from a Mandevilla plant (i.e., "Double Pink") deposited with the National Institute of Technology and Evaluation, Patent Biological Depositary (NITE-IPOD) under the accession number FERM BP-22460 or its progeny by using conventional techniques in plant breeding. Such conventional techniques may include conventional propagation techniques such as vegetative propagation and seed propagation, tissue culture techniques for culturing plant cells, tissues, or organs, and recombinant gene techniques for directly introducing useful traits. The Mandevilla plant according to the present invention can typically be produced by vegetative propagation of a Mandevilla plant (i.e., "Double Pink") deposited with the National Institute of Technology and Evaluation, Patent Biological Depositary (NITE-IPOD) under the accession number FERM BP-22460 or its progeny. Examples of "vegetative propagation" include techniques such as cuttings (including leaf cuttings), layering, stem laying (pressing method), division, and grafting, as well as clone seedlings created by tissue culture, with cuttings being particularly preferred.
[0018] "Cutting" is an asexual propagation method in which a part of a plant that does not have a stem or root is cut off and trained to become an independent plant with a stem and root. Depending on the part used, cuttings can be branch cuttings, trunk cuttings (stem cuttings), root cuttings, leaf cuttings, etc. Typically, cuttings are performed by inserting a part of a branch or trunk (stem) of a parent plant into soil and leaving it partly above ground. In the present invention, the part used for "cutting" is not particularly limited, but is preferably a branch having at least one double flower.
[0019] For the cutting, a Mandevilla plant (i.e., "Double Pink") deposited at the National Institute of Technology and Evaluation, Patent Biological Depositary Center (NITE-IPOD) under the accession number FERM BP-22460 or a branch mutation of its progeny may be used. "Branch mutation" refers to a phenomenon in which flowers, buds, leaves, etc., of only a certain branch of a plant develop different genetic traits from those of the individual due to a mutation in the growing point, or an individual that has expressed such a phenomenon. In a plant, the body is formed from the growing point forward, so that there is a possibility that the part that has not been mutated will be distinguished from the part that has not been mutated and will be fixed as a trait. Therefore, by performing cuttings using a branch of a branch mutation having at least one double flower, it is possible to create a new variety of a Mandevilla plant having other characteristics while maintaining the desired characteristics (particularly the double flowering ability). In fact, the inventors surprisingly found, while repeatedly collecting approximately 3,000 cuttings for propagation from a Mandevilla plant (i.e., "Double Pink") deposited at the National Institute of Technology and Evaluation, Patent Biological Depositary (NITE-IPOD) under the accession number FERM BP-22460, a branch bearing flowers with double crimson flowers was discovered, and by propagating this branch through propagation, they succeeded in producing "Double Red," a new double-flowered variety with a flower color different from Double Pink.
[0020] In another aspect of the present invention, the present invention provides propagation materials (vegetative propagation materials such as cuttings, seeds, etc.), plant parts (flowers, stems, branches, leaves, roots, etc.), tissues, or cells of the above-mentioned Mandevilla plant or its progeny.
[0021] In a further aspect, the present invention provides a product derived from the Mandevilla plant or its progeny, typically a potted plant, a cut flower, or a processed product made from the cut flower.
[0022] In yet another aspect of the present invention, there is provided a method of producing a Mandevilla plant, comprising the steps of: The method includes the step of providing a Mandevilla plant selected from the Mandevilla plants deposited at the National Institute of Technology and Evaluation, International Patent Organism Depositary (NITE-IPOD) under the accession number FERM BP-22460 or progeny thereof.
[0023] Those skilled in the art can use the provided Mandevilla plant deposited at the National Institute of Technology and Evaluation, International Patent Organism Depositary (NITE-IPOD) under the accession number FERM BP-22460 or its progeny to create a novel Mandevilla plant based on conventional techniques for plant breeding. Such conventional techniques may include conventional propagation techniques such as vegetative propagation and seed propagation, tissue culture techniques for culturing plant cells, tissues, or organs, and gene recombination techniques that can directly introduce useful traits.
[0024] The method of the present invention is typically carried out by vegetatively propagating a Mandevilla plant deposited at the National Institute of International Trade and Industry (NITE-IPOD) under accession number FERM BP-22460 or a progeny thereof, preferably by cuttings using a branch having at least one double flower.
[0025] According to the method of the present invention, it is possible to produce a Mandevilla plant having desired characteristics (particularly double flowering) that could not be produced so far. EXAMPLES
[0026] Example 1. Creation of the double-flowered Mandevilla variety "Double Pink" In June 2019, we started cultivating the single-flowered parent Mandevilla variety "Cream Pink" with a purple-pink (RHS color chart: 62C) flower color as a production parent plant in the greenhouse of VOF KOENE & ZN in Maasland, the Netherlands. The temperature in the greenhouse was controlled at a minimum of 18°C, and the cultivation was carried out in 20 cm pots. From the parent plants cultivated in this way, we obtained double-flowered individuals with a pink (RHS color chart: 65C) flower color in September 2020. Cuttings were taken from the branches of these individuals, and they were further potted in 20 cm pots at a minimum temperature of 18°C in the greenhouse of MOERHEIM NEW PLANT BV in Lime Iderburg, the Netherlands, and managed there. We further confirmed that double-flowered flowers could be obtained stably by repeating the cuttings.
[0027] Cuttings were taken from the stock obtained at MOERHEIM NEW PLANT BV in April 2021 and delivered to the Suntory Flowers Ltd. Global Breeding & Resource Center (Higashiomi City). In the greenhouse of the Suntory Flowers Ltd. Global Breeding & Resource Center, the cuttings were kept in 9 cm pots at a minimum temperature of 16 ° C, and cuttings were taken again in October 2021. In January 2022, the cuttings were potted in 9 cm pots and raised in a greenhouse also kept at a minimum temperature of 16 ° C, after which they were potted in 18 cm pots in May 2022 and cultivation tests were conducted in the company's outdoor field. The stability of the double-flowering characteristics and flower color was confirmed by August 31, 2022, and the cultivation was completed. The double-flowering Mandevilla variety obtained in this way was named "Double Pink". Figure 1 shows a photograph of the 'Double Pink' flower.
[0028] The characteristics of "Double Pink" are shown below. The tree is upright and does not become a vine, or it does not become a vine at all. The internodes in the middle are narrow, averaging 2cm in length, and the stems are hairless. The overall shape of the leaf is elliptical, the tip is pointed, and the base is circular. The leaves are densely packed throughout the plant, with the average leaf size being 7.6cm x 5.4cm. There are no bumps between the veins and the leaf surface is smooth. There are no hairs on the top or bottom of the leaf. - If the cuttings are planted at 44 weeks, the seedlings will flower at 24 weeks. Approximately 3 flowers bloom per branch. The diameter of the corolla is about 6.5cm. There are originally five petals, and the double petals are formed from the stamens, making a total of ten. -The only reproductive organ present is the pistil. The petals are pink (RHS colour chart: 65C). The petals have a smooth texture. The length of the flower throat is about 3.1 cm, and the length of the flower tube is about 1.3 cm.
[0029] The cultured seedlings of "Double Pink" were internationally deposited on October 14, 2022 at the National Institute of Technology and Evaluation's Patent Biological Deposit Center (NITE-IPOD) (Room 120, 2-5-8 Kazusa Kamatari, Kisarazu City, Chiba Prefecture) based on the Budapest Treaty (deposit number: FERM BP-22460).
[0030] Example 2. Creation of the double-flowered Mandevilla variety "Double Red" In the greenhouse of VOF KOENE & ZN in Maasland, the Netherlands, the "Double Pink" plant, which had been cultivated as a parent for production, was cultivated in parallel with the confirmation of stability. The temperature of the greenhouse was controlled at a minimum of 18°C, and cultivation was carried out in 20 cm pots. After repeatedly collecting approximately 3,000 cuttings for grafting, a branch with a flower with a double-flowered deep red flower color (RHS color chart: 53A) was discovered in May 2022. This was potted up in a 20 cm pot and managed in the greenhouse of the same company and MOERHEIM NEW PLANT BV in Lime Iderburg, the Netherlands (minimum temperature 18°C). Further cuttings were repeatedly taken to confirm that double-flowered flowers could be obtained stably. The double-flowered Mandevilla variety obtained in this way was named "Double Red". Figure 2 shows a photograph of the 'Double Red' flower.
[0031] The characteristics of "Double Red" are shown below. The petals are deep red (RHS colour chart: 53A). The petals have a smooth texture. The length of the flower throat is about 3.1 cm, and the length of the flower tube is about 1.3 cm.
