Abstract
The present disclosure relates to a process for producing carburized sponge iron (208), the process including the steps of charging iron ore (207) into a direct reduction shaft (211) (s303a) and / or discharging carburized sponge iron (208) from the direct reduction shaft (s303b), whereby a seal gas (223) is introduced into the direct reduction shaft; removing top gas (216) from the direct reduction shaft (s305); recycling a proportion of the top gas (216) and mixing it with makeup gas (215) to form a reducing gas (217); and introducing the reducing gas into the direct reduction shaft in countercurrent to the iron ore (s309) to reduce the iron ore and produce carburized sponge iron. The seal gas consists essentially of carbon dioxide, and the makeup gas contains more than 80% by volume of hydrogen gas. The present disclosure further relates to a system for producing carburized sponge iron and the carburized sponge iron produced by the process.
