Abstract

The present invention relates to a method for inhibiting foam formation in a process comprising the step of adding to the process mixture an effective amount of a foam control agent, the foam control agent having the formula RO(EO) n (PO) m H, where R is a straight chain hydrocarbon radical having 12 to 18 carbon atoms, EO is ethylene oxide, PO is propylene oxide, n can be any integer from 2 to 9, and m can be any integer from 8 to 19. The compounds may further be characterized in that the molecular weight of R is 8 to 29 percent by weight of the compound. These compositions have been found to be superior in controlling foam formation over conventional defoamers in fermentations, preferably amino acid fermentations and enzymatic fermentations, more preferably lysine, MSG, and glucose oxidase fermentations.
