A process for the production of magnesium chloride from sea bittern.

Abstract

Sea Bittern, the mother liquor left after recovery of sodium chloride, a waste product of salt industry, is a potential source of magnesium compounds. A process has been developed to produce magnesium chloride (MgC12. 6H20). Sea bittern contains magnesium salt in the form of chloride and sulphate, which is desulphated from calcium chloride to convert magnesium sulphate into magnesium chloride and calcium sulphate which is filtered off and filtrate is concentrated to a specific density resulting in crystalline magnesium chloride hexa hydfate (MgC12. 6H20).
