Abstract

A hairbrush with two sets of bristles attached at adjustable angles. The bristles are attached to a long handle comprising a built-up portion to allow for easier hair brushing. The adjustable double set of bristles allows for the brush to wrap more around the head, decreasing the need for reaching overhead.

[0002] People with limited movements in their shoulders are unable to brush the back of their hair, often leading to a disheveled look and a sense of embarrassment. People with cerebral palsy, stroke, traumatic brain injuries, shoulder injuries or shoulder arthritis are most commonly impacted by this.

[0003] The present invention is directed at an improved hairbrush design for people suffering from limited or impaired movement.SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION

[0004] In one aspect of the present invention, there is disclosed a hairbrush with an extended handle is designed for people who cannot reach fully overhead, but still have some reaching ability.

[0005] In another aspect of the present invention, the hairbrush of the present invention comprises two sets of bristles that are attached to the handle, wherein the two sets of bristles can be adjustably angled towards each other, which allows the hairbrush of the present invention to wrap more fully around the head, decreasing the need for extended overhead reaching.

[0011] The following detailed description is of the best currently contemplated modes of carrying out exemplary embodiments of the invention. The description is not to be taken in a limiting sense, but is made merely for the purpose of illustrating the general principles of the invention, since the scope of the invention is best defined by the appended claims.

[0012] As stated above, people with limited movements in their shoulders are often unable to brush the back of their hair, often leading to a disheveled look and a sense of embarrassment. People with cerebral palsy, stroke, traumatic brain injuries, shoulder injuries or shoulder arthritis are most commonly impacted by this. The present invention is directed at solving thee and other problems with conventional hairbrush designs, particularly for people suffering from problems with limited or impaired movement.

[0013] The improved hairbrush design of the present invention is depicted, by way of example, in FIGS. 1-4. FIG. 1 shows a perspective view of a hairbrush 10 constructed in accordance with a preferred embodiment of the present invention. Hairbrush 10 generally comprises a handle 24 portion and a bristle head portion 30. Handle portion 24 comprises an enlarged grip portion 20 and an extension portion 26. Handle portion 24 further comprises a hanging loop 22 at one end for storing the hairbrush when not in use. Hairbrush 10 further comprises a bristle head portion 30 is attached to handle 24.

[0014] As seen by way of example in FIGS. 1-3, bristle head 30 is attached to handle 24 and comprises a first bristle head 12 and second bristle head 16, which are connected to each other via hinge portion 28. Bristle head 12 further comprises first bristles 14, and second bristle head 16 comprises second bristles 18.

[0015] As seen in FIGS. 1-4, first bristle head 12 and second bristle head 16 bristles can be adjusted along hinge portion 18 from a flat configuration to an angled configuration (see FIG. 4, by way of example). The adjustable angle between first bristle head 12 and second bristle head 16 allows for the hairbrush to reach the back of the head without having to reach overhead.

[0016] In a preferred embodiment, the first bristle head 12 and second bristle head 16 can be positioned at about 135-degree angle, and the two sets of bristles (14 and 18) allow for more surface area to be positioned on the head of the user. The double set of bristles also allows for the brush to wrap more around the head, decreasing the need for reaching overhead. In a preferred embodiment, handle 24 is approximately one foot in length, but the size of handle 24 and bristle head 30 can be varied as a matter of application specific design choice.

[0017] In a preferred embodiment, first bristle head 12 and second bristle head 16 are connected with the bendable wires in the hinge portion 28 to allow for the angle between the bristles 14 and 18 to change.

[0018] In a preferred embodiment, handle 24 comprises a “built up” portion 20 formed of a thick foam to allow for easier handling. Other means of building up the handle are contemplated without departing from the spirit of the invention.

[0019] The extended handle design of the present invention overcomes limited mobility in the shoulder of the user, and the built-up handle portion allows for easy handling for people suffering from limited hand movement or dexterity. The two sets of bristles held together by the hinge portion allows for a greater surface area to be reached on the back of the head. People suffering from limited mobility as discussed herein can easily use the hairbrush of the present invention by flexing their shoulder forward and bending slightly at the elbow with the handle in their hand, and by slightly turning their neck to the side to brush their hair.

[0020] It should be understood, of course, that the foregoing relates to exemplary embodiments of the invention and that modifications may be made without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as set forth in the following claims.

Claims

1. A hairbrush comprising a handle portion and a bristle head portion, the handle portion comprising an enlarged grip portion and an extension portion extending from the grip portion, a bristle head portion attached to the extension portion of the handle, wherein the bristle head portion comprises a first bristle head and second bristle head which are connected to each other via hinge portion.

2. The hairbrush of claim 1, wherein the first bristle head comprises first bristles and the second bristle head comprises second bristles.

3. The hairbrush of claim 1, wherein the first bristle head and the second bristle head can be adjusted along hinge portion from a flat configuration to an angled configuration.

4. The hairbrush of claim 3, wherein the first bristle head and the second bristle head are positioned at about 135-degree angle to each other.

5. The hairbrush of claim 1, wherein the handle is approximately one foot in length.

6. The hairbrush of claim 1, wherein first bristle head and second bristle head are connected with the bendable wires in the hinge portion.

7. The hairbrush of claim 1, wherein the enlarged grip portion is formed of a thick foam to allow for easier handling.
