Abstract

An edge haircare styling system is provided that includes a container having a dispensing pump coupled to one end of body portion thereof. BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION

[0001] The hairs on the edges of the scalps of women of color are typically called “baby hairs” or “edges.” The baby hairs are shorter hairs located along the hairline region at the perimeter of, most commonly, black and brown women's hair. The stylizing of baby hairs began in the earl 1920's by celebrities pioneering the “look.” The Civil Rights Movement of the 1960's brought with it a change in the hair styles of women of color, with black women wearing afros along with gelled down baby hairs. This “look” waned until the 1990's when it gained popularity among Latin-American women. In more recent years it has become popular among black and brown women and with their baby hairs being stylized as works of self-expression and works of art.

[0002] Some women of color stylize their baby hairs by applying a gel to their baby hair with their fingers and then use hair styling implements, in the form of a small brush and / or small comb, to stylize the baby hairs. Thus, the stylization of baby hairs requires the woman to carry with her or have available, the container of gel and the specialized small brush and / or comb and if being carried by the women, also requires a protective carrying case for the hair styling implements. To overcome this inconvenience, a dispensing container of a hair styling composition is proved that carries hair styling implements in the form of both a baby hair stylizing comb and a baby hair stylizing brush, whereby the container provides for storage of the brush and comb, and doubles as a handle for using the brush and comb.SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION

[0003] A haircare dispenser having edge hair styling implements for use thereon is provided. The haircare dispenser includes a comb having a first stem extending longitudinally therefrom and a plurality of tines extending in a direction transverse with respect to the longitudinal direction, and a brush having a second stem extending longitudinally therefrom and a multiplicity of bristles extending in a direction transverse with respect to the longitudinal direction. Further, the haircare dispenser includes a container having a first end thereof configured for dispensing a hair styling composition disposed within the container, and a second end having a pair of receptacles formed therein. The pair of receptacles are configured for respectively removably receiving the first stem of the comb and the second stem of the brush in at least a storage position and a use position.

Further, the edge haircare styling system includes a comb having a first stem extending longitudinally therefrom and a plurality of tines extending in a direction transverse with respect to the longitudinal direction, and a brush having a second stem extending longitudinally therefrom and a multiplicity of bristles extending in a direction transverse with respect to the longitudinal direction. The pair of receptacles of the implement holder are configured for respectively removably receiving the first stem of the comb and the second stem of the brush in at least a storage position where the tines and bristles extend toward a central portion of the implement holder, and a use position where the tines and bristles extend outward beyond a perimeter of the implement holder.

[0022] Disclosed herein is an edge haircare styling system for use in styling what are known as “baby hairs,” or edge hairs, or simply “edges,” which terminology may be used interchangeably herein. As illustratively shown in FIGS. 1-14, the edge hair styling system 100 includes a container 110 in which a hair styling composition 119 is disposed. The container 110 also carries styling implement in the form of a styling comb 150 and a styling brush 160, both of which are designed for styling of edge hairs. Edge haircare styling system 100 advantageously includes a pair of caps 115 for respectively enclosing the hair styling composition dispensing pump 130 disposed adjacent a first end 114 of the body portion 112 of container 110 and enclosing the implement holder 140, 140a located adjacent to the second end 116 of the container body 112, along with the styling comb 150 and styling brush 160 oriented in a storage position.

[0024] Referring to FIGS. 1-5, there is shown edge haircare styling system 100 that includes a container 110 having a cavity 118 within the body portion 112 that serves as a reservoir for a hair styling composition 119 disposed therein. The edge haircare styling system 100 includes a manually operated pump 130 coupled to a first end 114 of the container body 112. Accordingly, the hair styling composition 119 is dispensed from the cavity 118 by a user's operation of the pump 130 by the user's depression and subsequent release of the bump button or operator 132. Such operation of the pump operator dispenses the styling composition 119 from the nozzle 134, as is conventional for containers of hair styling compositions. The pump 130 has a base portion 136 that is coupled to the first end 114 of the container body 112. The pump has an annular projection 131 located adjacent to the base portion 136 for releasable engagement with a corresponding annular groove formed in the cap 115, as is conventional and therefore not shown. A corresponding cap 115 may removably enclose the pump 130 when the pump is not being used.

[0025] The pump 130 may be any conventional type of manually operated pump. For the pump 130 illustrated in the figures, the pump inlet tube opening (not shown) is located at the top end 114 of the container body 112. As the hair styling composition 119 is dispensed from the reservoir 118, the resulting negative pressure within the reservoir 118 causes a piston 120, below the hairstyling composition 119, to be displaced upwardly, and thereby maintains the remaining hair styling composition 119 in proximity to the pump inlet tube opening for subsequent dispensing of the hair styling composition 119 by the pump 130. The piston 120 is also of the conventional type used in such applications and is provided with a seal 122 disposed about the perimeter of the piston 120 at the upper end thereof, and a second seal 124 circumscribing the tower end of the piston 120. As the piston 120 is displaced upwardly, such creates a negative pressure in the space 117 below the piston 120, which negative pressure is equalized by a flow of air through an air inlet through opening 148 formed in the outer end surface 1408 of implement holder 140 and extending therethrough. The air inlet through opening 148 is in fluid communication with a through hole 174, shown in FIGS. 7 and 8, that serves as an air inlet to the space 117 beneath the piston 120. Accordingly, a pressure balance within the container, above and below the piston 120, is maintained as the hair styling composition is dispensed by the pump 130.

[0026] The container 110 has a bottom, cover member 170 coupled to the second end 116 of the container body 112 and an implement holder 140 is affixed to the bottom cover member 170, as will be described in following paragraphs. Implement holder 140 is formed with a pair of receptacles into which are removable received respective stem portions of the styling comb 150 and the styling brush 160. The styling comb 150 includes a longitudinally extending comb base member 154 from which a plurality of comb teeth 152 extend in a transverse direction with respect to the comb base member 154, as is conventional. A stem 156 extends longitudinally from a bottom side 155 of the comb base member 154 and is configured for removable coupling with a receptacle 144 formed in the outer face 1408 of implement holder 140. Likewise, the styling brush 160 has a longitudinally extending brush base 164 from which a multiplicity of brush bristles extend, as is conventional. The styling brush 160 includes a stem 166 extending longitudinally from a bottom side 165 of the brush base 164 and is configured for removable coupling with a receptacle 146 formed in the outer face 1408 of implement holder 140.

[0027] The removable coupling of the styling comb 150 and styling brush 160 to the implement holder 140 permits the styling comb 150 and styling brush 160 to be positioned in at least two positions, a storage position, shown in FIG. 1, and a use position, shown in FIG. 2. In the storage position the comb teeth 152 of comb 150 and the bristles 162 of brush 160 extend inwardly, toward a central portion of the implement holder 140. With the styling comb 150 and styling brush 160 in the storage position, the cap 115 is able to pass over styling comb 150 and styling brush 160 and engage an annular projection 141 for conventional type releasable coupling therewith. As was described for the pump 130, the cap 115 has an annular groove formed therein (not shown) the removable engages the annular projection 141. In the second position, as illustrated in FIG. 2, the comb teeth 152 of comb 150 and the bristles 162 of brush 160 extend outwardly beyond an outer perimeter edge 142 of the implement holder 140 to facilitate their use in styling a user's edge hairs.

[0028] The receptacles 144 and 146 are each open recesses formed in the outer surface 1408 of the implement holder 140. The shape of receptacles 144 and 146, and the complementary shape of the stems 156 and 166 can be any shape that allows for at least two opposing engaged positions of the comb 150 and brush 160. As the stems 156 and 166 frictionally engage the interior of the corresponding receptacles 144 and 146, some contours of the stems and receptacles are easier to manufacture within the necessary tolerances than others. While the receptacles 144 and 146 are illustrated herein as having a polyhedral contour, as an example, and the stems 156 and 166 having a contour that is complementary thereto, other contours may be used. For example, the stems 156 and 166 may be formed with an oval horizontal cross-sectional contour and the receptacles complementary thereto, to provides fixed storage and use positions.

[0029] Although the dimensions of the stems 156 and 166 may differ from one another, as would their corresponding receptacles 144, 146, to prevent interchanging of their positions with one another, for example, they are both removably coupled within their respective receptacles by frictional engagement. With additional reference to FIGS. 7, 8, 10 and. 11, it should be understood that there is an interference fit, sometimes called a “line-to-line” fit, between a respective stem 156, 166 and the interior walls of the corresponding receptacle 144, 146. The depth of the receptacles 144, 146 and the length of the corresponding stems 156, 166 are selected to provide the support base needed for use of the comb 150 and brush 160 for styling a user's edge hairs. While the stems 156, 166 may have a solid polyhedral contour, such requires very tight control of tolerances and the draft angles used in the molding of both the receptacles 144, 146 and the stems 156, 166 in order to have sufficient frictional engagement between them, yet not so great of a dimensional interference as to make the engagement therebetween difficult for a user to insert and remove the implements 150, 160. To ease the manufacturing burden associated with providing frictional engagement between the stems 156, 166 and the corresponding receptacles 144, 146, each of the sems 156, 166 is formed by a respective plurality of segments 157, 159; and 167, 169, each adjacent pair of segments 157 and 159; 167 and 169 being separated by corresponding recesses 158, 168. The number of segments and recesses will depend on the depth to which the stems 156, 166 needs to be engaged within the corresponding receptacles 144, 146 in order to provide a stable mounting base for the associated styling comb 150 and styling brush 160.

[0030] In the exemplary embodiment disclosed, the first stem 156 extends from the bottom side 155 of the of the comb base member 154 and is formed by a first segment 157 adjacent to the bottom side 155 of the comb base member 154 and a second segment 159 spaced from the first segment 157 by a recessed portion 158. Similarly, the second stem 166 extends from the bottom side 165 of the brush base 164 and is formed by a first segment 167 adjacent to the bottom side 165 of the of the brush base 164 and a second segment 169 spaced from the first segment 167 by a recessed portion 168. There is no requirement that the size, shape or number of segment of the first stem 156 be identical to that of the second segment 166. In the exemplary embodiments each segment 157, 159, 167, 169 has a polyhedral contour, but other contours capable of providing the at least a use position and a storage position may be employed. The multiple segment configuration of the pair of stems 156 and 166 provides at least three key advantages. First, by dividing the stem into multiple spaced apart segments allows the corresponding stem to extend a necessary depth into the corresponding receptacle, but with a reduced surface area then would be the case for an unsegmented (solid) stem. With a reduced surface area, such allows for a greater degree of dimensional interference between the surfaces of the segments and that of the interior sides the corresponding receptacle. While increased interference increases the frictional holding force displacement force required between the stem and the receptacle, the reduced surface area provided by the segments reduces the insertion and removal force required by the user to change the comb 150 and brush 160 between use and storage positions, and allows the tolerances to be biased toward a greater degree of interference. Further, the thickness of the distal segments 159 and 169 can be chosen to allow the perimeter portions to flex in response to the interference fit with the interior walls of the corresponding receptacle 144, 146, which further provides the ability to utilize a greater degree of dimensional interference without requiring undue force by the user to manually insert and remove the comb 150 and brush 160. Still further, the recessed portions 158, 168 provide a space into which dirt and debris can be collected during insertion and removal of the comb 150 and brush 160, that otherwise might interfere with such insertion and removal.

[0031] Referring now to FIGS. 7, 8, 12 and 13, the assembly of the implement holder 140 to the bottom cover member 170 is shown. The bottom cover member 170 has a planar circularly shaped base 171 having a diameter that is substantially the same as that of the container body 112 to which it connects. An annular extension 176 is dimensioned to be insertably coupled to the second end 116 of the container body112 and surrounds an open recess 179. The annular extension 176 has a diameter that is less than the diameter of the base 171 and is centered thereon, to thereby provides an annular surface 173 that contacts the end surface of the second end 116 of the container body 112. [0032] The fastener 180 can take many forms. In the exemplary embodiment, fastener 180 is a screw rivet having a rivet nut 182 and a screw 184. The rivet nut 182 has an internally threaded extended post 185 that is passed through fastener through opening 145 of the implement holder 140 until the head 1821 of the rivet nut 182 is in contact with the outer surface 1408 of implement holder 140. The outer surface 175 of the bottom cover member 170 is overlaid on the mounting surface 1406 of implement holder 140 with the through holes 174 being aligned with the through hole 148. [0033] Beside screw type fasteners, the bottom cover member 170 can be joined to the implement holder 140 by a drive pin driven into the through holes 172 and 145, where the holes 172 and 145 are appropriately dimensioned for such fastening method. Alternately, the bottom cover member 170 can be affixed to the implement holder 140 by bonding one to the other, for example by adhesive bonding or ultrasonic welding. When the bottom cover member 170 is bonded to the implement holder 140, each member only requires a single through hole 174, 148 for providing an air passage to the space 117 beneath the piston 120. [0034] As illustrated in FIGS. 6, 9, 14 and 15, the bottom cover member and implement holder can alternately be formed integrally in one-piece formation. The combined implement holder and bottom cover member 140a includes a base portion 1401 that is disposed adjacent to the second end 116 of the container body portion 112, and an end portion 1402 extending longitudinally from the base portion and has an outer end surface 1408 into which the receptacles 144 and 146 are formed. The end portion 1402 has an annular projection 141, disposed adjacent to the base portion 1401, for releasable coupling with a corresponding cap 115, just as provided for the implement holder 140, previously described. The base portion 1401 and end portion 1402 have an interior hollow portion 143 that provides an open passage for air passing between the air inlet opening 148 and the space 117 beneath the piston 120. The hollow portion 143 also serves to reduce the amount of material needed to manufacture the part, making the part less costly to produce, and reducing the weight of the part and thereby the weight of the system 100. The receptacles 144 and 146 and the through opening 148 are openings formed in the outer end surface 1408 of the end portion 1402. The configuration of the receptacles 144 and 146 are identical to those previously described for the implement holder 140. The combined implement holder and bottom cover member 140a further includes an annular extension portion 1404 extending longitudinally from a contact surface 1407 at the end of the base portion 1401 in a direction opposite to the that of the end portion 1402. The annular extension 1404 is dimensioned to be insertably coupled to the second end 116 of the container body 112 and surrounds an open recess 1403. The annular extension 1404 has a diameter that is less than the diameter than the base portion 1401 and is centered thereon, to thereby provides an annular surface 1407 that contacts the end surface of the second end 116 of the container body 112. To facilitate the connection of the combined implement holder and bottom cover member 140a to the second end 116 of the body portion 112, the annular extension 1404 is formed with an annular projection 1405 that “snaps” into a corresponding annular recess (not shown) formed in the interior wall of the container body 112 adjacent the second end 116, as likewise described previously for the bottom cover member 170. With the combined implement holder and bottom cover member 140a secured to the container body 112, the open recess 1403 is in open communication with the space 117 beneath the piston 120 and in open communication with the air inlet opening 148, via the hollow portion 143. By that arrangement, a pressure balance within the container, above and below the piston 120, is maintained as the hair styling composition is dispense by the pump 130.

Claims

1. A haircare dispenser having edge hair styling implements for use thereon, comprising:a comb having a first stem extending longitudinally therefrom and a plurality of tines extending in a direction transverse with respect to said longitudinal direction;a brush having a second stem extending longitudinally therefrom and a multiplicity of bristles extending in a direction transverse with respect to said longitudinal direction; anda container having a first end thereof configured for dispensing a hair styling composition disposed within said container, and a second end having a pair of receptacles formed therein configured for respectively removably receiving said first stem of said comb and said second stem of said brush in at least a storage position and a use position.

2. The hair care dispenser as recited in claim 1, where each of said pair of receptacles is formed by a cavity having a polyhedral contour.

3. The hair care dispenser as recited in claim 2, where said first and second stems each have a corresponding polyhedral contour with a corresponding one of said pair of receptacles for insert therein and respectively dimensioned for removable frictional engagement therein.

4. The hair care dispenser as recited in claim 3, where each of said first and second stems are formed with a plurality of segments spaced one from another by a groove.

5. The hair care dispenser as recited in claim 1, where each of said pair of receptacles is a cavity having a contour configured for removably affixing a respective one of said brush and said comb in said storage and use positions.

6. The hair care dispenser as recited in claim 5, where each of said first and second stems are respectively configured for removable frictional engagement within a corresponding one of said pair of receptacles.

7. The hair care dispenser as recited in claim 6, where each of said pair of receptacles is formed by a cavity having a polyhedral contour, and said first and second stems each have a corresponding polyhedral contour for insert into a respective one of said pair of receptacles.

8. The hair care dispenser as recited in claim 7, where each of said first and second stems are respectively formed by a pair of segments spaced one from another by a groove, each of said pair of segments being dimensioned for removable frictional fit within a corresponding one of said pair of receptacles.

9. The hair care dispenser as recited in claim 6, where each of said first and second stems are formed by a plurality of segments, each of said plurality of said segments having a complementary shape to said corresponding one of said pair of receptacles, and are dimensioned for a removable frictional fit therewith.

10. The hair care dispenser as recited in claim 9, where said plurality of segments of each of said first and second stems is a pair of segments spaced one from another by a groove.

An edge haircare styling system, comprising:a container with a body portion having cavity defining at least a reservoir for a hair styling composition, a dispensing pump coupled to a first end of said body and forming a closure for the cavity and configured for dispensing the hair styling composition from said cavity, and an implement holder coupled to a second end of said body and having a pair of receptacles formed therein and configured for respectively removably receiving hair styling implements therein;a comb having a first stem extending longitudinally therefrom and a plurality of tines extending in a direction transverse with respect to said longitudinal direction;a brush having a second stem extending longitudinally therefrom and a multiplicity of bristles extending in a direction transverse with respect to said longitudinal direction;wherein said pair of receptacles of said implement holder are configured for respectively removably receiving said first stem of said comb and said second stem of said brush in at least a storage position where said tines and bristles extend toward a central portion of said implement holder, and a use position where said tines and bristles extend outward beyond a perimeter of said implement holder.

12. The edge_haircare styling system as recited in claim 11, where each of said pair of receptacles is formed by a cavity having a polyhedral contour.

13. The edge_haircare styling system as recited in claim 12, where said first and second stems each have a corresponding polyhedral contour with a corresponding one of said pair of receptacles for insert therein and respectively dimensioned for removable frictional engagement therein.

14. The edge haircare styling system as recited in claim 13, where each of said first and second stems are formed with a plurality of segments spaced one from another by a groove.

15. The hair care dispenser as recited in claim 11, where each of said pair of receptacles is a cavity having a contour configured for removably affixing a respective one of said brush and said comb in said storage and use positions.

16. The hair care dispenser as recited in claim 15, where each of said first and second stems are respectively configured for removable frictional engagement within a corresponding one of said pair of receptacles.

17. The hair care dispenser as recited in claim 16, where each of said pair of receptacles is formed by a cavity having a polyhedral contour, and said first and second stems each have a corresponding polyhedral contour for insert into a respective one of said pair of receptacles.

18. The hair care dispenser as recited in claim 17, where each of said first and second stems are respectively formed by a pair of segments spaced one from another by a groove, each of said pair of segments being dimensioned for removable frictional fit within a corresponding one of said pair of receptacles.

19. The hair care dispenser as recited in claim 16, where each of said first and second stems are formed by a plurality of segments, each of said plurality of said segments having a complementary shape to said corresponding one of said pair of receptacles, and are dimensioned for a removable frictional fit therewith.

20. The hair care dispenser as recited in claim 19, where said plurality of segments of each of said first and second stems is a pair of segments spaced one from another by a groove.
