Description

A GAMIFIED SYSTEM FOR REMOTE NON-INVASIVE PATIENT RESPIRATORY MONITORING AND PULMONARY REHABILITATIONFIELD OF THE INVENTION

[0001] The present disclosure relates generally to medical devices, and more specifically to a home based gamified non-invasive intelligent Pulmonary Rehabilitation (PR) system with quantified outcomes to sense and adjust the therapy levels based on patient conditions in an engaging manner so that the recovery is faster and efficient with excellent prognosis. Also, the present disclosure is a game based platform for patients with moderate to very severe chronic respiratory diseases comprising a decision support system for clinical interventions in patients to improve the quality of life with quantified outcomes.BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION

[0002] Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is a global public health burden that needs to be addressed to reduce the substantial cost associated with the disease and improve the patient’s quality of life. COPD is the third leading cause of death worldwide. In 2016, the Global Burden of Disease study reported a prevalence of 251 million global cases of COPD that year. Research has indicated that COPD affects at least 320 million people and has a global economic cost of US $2.1 trillion.

[0003] The coronavirus disease 19 (COVID-19) pandemic has greatly impacted PR programs and their delivery to patients. Owing to fears of viral transmission and resultant outbreaks of COVID- 19, institution-based PR programs have been forced to significantly reduce enrolment or in some cases completely shut down during the pandemic. As a majority of COPD patients are elderly and have multiple co-morbidities including cardiovascular disease and diabetes, they are notably susceptible to severe complications of COVID- 19. As such, patients have been advised to stay at home and avoid social contact to the maximum extent possible. This has increased patients’ vulnerability to physical deconditioning, depression, and social isolation.

[0004] Also about half of the COVID survivors have residual functional deficits that require multidisciplinary specialist rehabilitation. The workforce to deliver the required rehabilitation input is beyond the capacity of existing healthcare system in most of the countries.

[0005] There are several challenges to pulmonary rehabilitation in India that stem from patients, society and hospitals alike. Routine pulmonary rehabilitation programs being labourintensive, time consuming and long-term are not very motivating for patients as well as Doctors to pursue. Lack of awareness or neglect among medical professionals about the positive impacts of pulmonary rehabilitation stems from the fact that they do not have enough exposure to related concepts and benefits in their undergraduate and post-graduate years - or later, during clinical practice. Diagnostic labs are so overloaded with routine tasks that they don’t appoint staff well-trained for pulmonary rehabilitation- specific assessment. Hence there exists a gap in the pulmonary rehabilitation space for efficient and quantified rehabilitation therapy for respiratory distresses.

[0006] The drop-out rate from conventional pulmonary rehabilitation programs is also quite high. The present treatment processes are not satisfactory and are ineffective in stemming the disease or the associated disability. They also do not provide adequate relief from the symptoms. Development of stage-wise effects of the disease may worsen these and lead to weight loss, weakened or dysfunctional respiratory muscles, in turn increasing disability and repeated acute exacerbations. The challenges in the current rehabilitations are less motivated, less concentrated, no correction on postures, and lack of facilities and modalities.

[0007] Thus, there is now a pressing need for high-quality different modalities Pulmonary Rehabilitation PR implementations including “smartness”, ICT and multi sensor data fusion enabled ones that facilitates both supervised and unsupervised at home Pulmonary Rehabilitation solutions which delivers the essential components of pulmonary rehabilitation, including exercise training, education, and behavior change.OBJECTS OF THE INVENTION
