Force monitoring shoe

An apparatus and method of operation for measuring forces applied to a wearer's foot, the apparatus providing an indication to the wearer when forces on the foot exceed pre-selected upper limits or do not meet pre-selected lower limits. A body member is disclosed for attachment around the wearer's foot, the body member having an exterior sole and an interior sole portion covered by a rigid foot plate. The foot plate includes an upper support surface for contact with the foot. The interior sole portion includes at least one cavity within, with a force sensing unit attachable partially within the cavity. At least one strain gage is positioned at a midpoint on the force sensing unit, and the force sensing unit is connectable to the underside of the foot plate. An electronic means is mounted within the cavity and is electrically connected to the at least one strain gage. The electronic means receives electronic signals from the strain gage, the signals in proportion to force applied onto the force sensing unit when the wearer's foot applies weight onto the foot plate, with conversion of the signals to output signals for transmission to a signal processing means in a remotely located receiver and display unit. The display unit compares the output signals to upper limits and lower limits, and displays alarms when output signals do not reach lower limits, or exceed upper limits, therefore assisting with therapeutic rehabilitation of an injured lower extremity.

Traffic information providing system, traffic information expression method and device

The invention provides a traffic information display method which presents traffic information so as to quantatively indicate the reliability and superiority of traffic information. The invention also provides a traffic information providing system which clearly communicates an “unknown” section to the receiving party. The invention represents the state volume of traffic information by the state volume of each sampling point set by segmenting a target road and represents traffic information by using the state volume of traffic information and gray scale information which displays the reliability of the state volume in multiple levels. The user thus understands how reliable the traffic information is and properly evaluates the traffic information. The traffic information may be used to perform a high-accuracy path search and provide traffic information at a reasonable cost. The traffic information providing system of the invention includes traffic information providing apparatus for providing, as traffic information, the state volume of traffic information of each distance quantization unit set by segmenting a target road and mask bit information indicating that the state volume is valid or invalid, and traffic information utilization apparatus for reproducing a valid state volume by using the mask bit information. In the traffic information providing system, the receiving party clearly recognizes, based on the mask bit information, an “unknown” section enclosed by an ellipse:

Patellar trial and drill guide for use in knee replacement surgery

A patellar trial and drill guide for use during knee replacement surgery comprising an articular surface member and a fixation peg drill guide. The articular surface member is the exact geometry as the artificial patellar implant, and the drill guide aligns the holes for the fixation pegs of the artificial patellar implant. The patellar trial is placed on the resected patella in the desired position, a patellar clamp is used to temporary fix the patellar trial to the patella. The patella is then returned to its normal position and a trial reduction of the total knee replacement is completed. If the placement and/or size of the patellar trial is unacceptable, the patella is inverted, the patellar trial removed, and a different sized trial or new location is determined. The new patellar trial is secured to the resected patella, and another trial reduction of the total knee replacement is completed. This procedure can be repeated until the patellar trial is the correct size and in the proper location. If the placement of the patella is acceptable, the patella is inverted, the articular surface member removed, fixation peg holes are drilled using the fixation peg holes of the drill guide, and an artificial patellar implant is implanted on the patient's remaining patella.
