A physiological status monitor has a monitor and an interconnected sensor that generates a sensor signal. The association data indicates an association between a particular patient and one portable communication device assigned to one primary medical caregiver. A medical data generator provides medical data to support an alert that indicates attention is desired from a medical caregiver. The medical data generators direct their data to diverse destinations. If an alert is issued based on any of the medical data generators, the portable communication device is determined based on the alert and the association data, a caregiver message is generated based on the alert, and the caregiver message is sent to the portable communication device. These techniques allow alerts from multiple medical devices to be integrated onto a single portable communication device.

A portable vein locating device includes one or more infrared illuminators for transmission through a patient's skin of infrared light and a vein imaging module for determining the location of a vein beneath the skin by detecting the absence of backscattered infrared light. As the device is passed over a patient's skin, infrared light from the infrared illuminators penetrates through the patient's skin and is absorbed by veins under the skin but scattered by the fat and other tissues surrounding the veins. Methods and apparatus for guiding medical care based on sensor data from the gastrointestinal tract are described utilizing an apparatus which can be used with enteral feeding. Generally, the apparatus includes an elongated body having a length configured for insertion into a stomach and at least one pair of electrodes located along the length of the elongated body and positionable for placement within the stomach. A controller in electrical communication with the at least one pair of electrodes is included and the control may also be configured to measure a conductivity or impedance between the pair of electrodes and to determine a gastric residual volume of the stomach based on the measured conductivity or impedance.

Devices and systems provide methods of detecting a heart failure condition of a patient that may be based on one or more respiratory parameters of a patient. In an example embodiment, a monitoring device determines one or more heart failure condition indicators based on a measure of the patient respiratory airflow and/or a measure of treatment pressure. The method includes placing an electrode set on the patient's head, acquiring spontaneous brain electrical signals and evoked potential signals from the patient through the electrode set, processing the signals using a handheld base unit, and displaying a result indicating the probability of the patient's neurological signal being normal or abnormal. This disclosure describes a remote patient monitoring system configured to monitor one or more patient parameters via one or more monitoring apparatuses for transmitting patient data to a remote, central data-processing facility via a network. The invention provides a method for detecting and preventing fraudulent medical insurance claims comprising storing identifying information and medical transaction histories on a portable device and on a server. The portable device is presented by a valid patient user to an authorized medical care provider. Medical transaction histories stored transaction histories are detected from the portable device and server. Medical transactions histories stored on the device are compared with those stored on the server. When the transaction histories on each device do not match, potential fraudulent medical insurance claims are detected.

A system which contains real-time specialist on-call data is disclosed. The system allows for the input and searching of specialist on-call data for various health care locations. The system is configured to allow a patient in need of the medical care of a specialist not currently available at the patient's location to search for the nearest health care location(s) with a physician of the desired specialization presently or soon to be on call.
