DEVICES AND METHODS FOR COMMUNICATION

[0001] FIELDS

[0002] Example embodiments of the present disclosure generally relate to the field of communication techniques and in particular, to devices and methods for handling radio link failure (RLF) of user equipment (UE) -to-UE (U2U) relay.BACKGROUND

[0003] In wireless communication networks, sidelink (device-to-device, D2D) communications are currently being researched and developed. In sidelink communications, a terminal device (e.g., user equipment, UE) may communicate with another terminal device via a direct link or an indirect link. In the case of indirect link, the terminal devices may communicate with each other via at least one further terminal device, which is called relay terminal device. Such relay communication is also referred to as U2U relay. In the U2U relay scenario, both end-to-end RLF and PC5 hop RLF may be detected. If these RLFs cannot be handled in time, the communication performance will be reduced.SUMMARY

[0039] Further, in the U2U scenario, both end-to-end RLF and PC5 hop RLF may be detected. In some embodiments, the sidelink RLF is detected in the following conditions,  upon an indication from sidelink RLC entity, where the indication indicates that the maximum number of retransmissions for a specific destination has been reached; or upon an indication from medium access control (MAC) entity, where the indication indicates that the maximum number of consecutive hybrid automatic repeat request (HARQ) discontinuous transmission (DTX) for a specific destination has been reached; or

[0040] upon the T400 expiry for a specific destination; or

[0041] upon an integrity check failure indication from sidelink packet data convergence protocol (PDCP) entity concerning sidelink (SL) -signal radio bear 2 (SRB2) or SL-SRB3 for a specific destination.

[0042] In some embodiments, the T400 may be used for an RRC re-configuration procedure, e.g., upon message RRCReconfigurationSidelink.

[0043] In some embodiments, PC5 unicast link may be maintained by a keep-alive timer, for example, the trigger for the keep-alive messages may be based on a timer associated with the layer 2 link. In some embodiments, the expiry of the keep-alive timer may be indicated by an upper layer.

[0060] Principles and implementations of the present disclosure will be described in detail below with reference to the figures.

[0061] EXAMPLE OF COMMUNICATION ENVIRONMENT

[0062] FIG. 1 illustrates a schematic diagram of an example communication environment 100 in which example embodiments of the present disclosure can be implemented.

[0063] The communication environment 100 comprises terminal devices 110-1, 110-2, 110-3.

[0064] In some embodiments, the terminal devices 110-1 and 110-2, and the terminal devices 110-2 and 110-3 may communicate with each other via sidelink (SL) connection (s) . A sidelink is a communication mode that allows direct communications between two or more terminal devices without the communications going through network device. SL communications may be carried out on a wireless interface, e.g., PC5 interface. SL communications may be unicast, groupcast, or broadcast, and may be used for device-to-device (D2D) communications, vehicle-to-everything (V2X) communications, etc.

[0065] By relying on a relay, it may enable sidelink (SL) services even if two specific devices are not within range of each other. Such relay communication is also referred to as U2U relay. U2U relay communications may be useful in a variety of settings such as for communication in public safety networks, or in out-of-coverage or network overload scenarios.

[0066] As illustrated in FIG. 1, the terminal device 110-1 may communicate with a terminal device 110-2 via the terminal device 110-3. The terminal device 110-3 operates as a relay for communications between the terminal devices 110-1 and 110-2. The terminal device 110-3 is sometimes referred to as a relay terminal device, or a serving relay terminal device for the terminal devices 110-1 and 110-2. The terminal devices 110-1 and 110-2 are sometimes referred to as remote terminal devices or end terminal devices. In some embodiments, the terminal device 110-3 may relay traffic from the terminal device 110-1 to the terminal device 110-2. In such a case, the terminal device 110-1 is referred to as a source terminal device, a transmitting (TX) terminal device or a first remote terminal device, and the terminal device 110-2 is referred to as a destination terminal device, a target terminal device, a receiving (RX) terminal device or a second remote terminal device.

[0067] In some other embodiments, the traffic from the terminal device 110-2 to the terminal device 110-1 may be also supported. That is, dual communications between the terminal devices 110-1 and 110-2 are enabled.

[0068] It should be understood that there may be more than one relay terminal device between two remote terminal device. As illustrated in FIG. 1, the terminal devices 110-3, 110- 4 and 110-5 may be operated as relay terminal devices between the terminal devices110-1 and 110-2. In this event, the terminal devices110-1 and 110-2 are referred to as remote / end terminal devices and the terminal devices 110-3, 110-4 and 110-5 are referred to as relay terminal devices.

[0069] Further, there may be more than one link in communication environment 100. As illustrated in FIG. 1, links may be as below:

[0070] link #1: the terminal device 110-1 -> the terminal device 110-3 -> the terminal device 110-4 -> the terminal device 110-5 -> the terminal device 110-2;

[0071] link #2: the terminal device 110-1 -> the terminal device 110-3 -> the terminal device 110-6 -> the terminal device 110-7;

[0072] link #3: the terminal device 110-1 -> the terminal device 110-3 -> the terminal device 110-9;

[0073] link #4: the terminal device 110-8 -> the terminal device 110-3 -> the terminal device 110-4 -> the terminal device 110-5 -> the terminal device 110-2;

[0074] link #5: the terminal device 110-8 -> the terminal device 110-3 -> the terminal device 110-6 -> the terminal device 110-7; and

[0075] link #6: the terminal device 110-8 -> the terminal device 110-3 -> the terminal device 110-9.

[0076] When there are a plurality of end-to-end links, a PC5 hop / relay terminal device may be multiplexed among different links. As illustrated in FIG. 1, the PC5 hop#1 is multiplexed among links #1, #2 and #3; the PC5 hop#2 is multiplexed among links #2 and #5; the terminal device 110-3 is multiplexed among links #1, #2, #3, #4, #5 and #6.

[0077] In some embodiments, there may be other terminal device within the communication environment 100. Those terminal devices may be operated as candidate relay terminal devices. Specifically, in case that end-to end RLF / PC5 RLF occurs, a procedure of re-selection may be performed.

[0078] For better discussions, the terminal devices 110-1 to 110-9 may be collectively or individually referred to as terminal devices 110. Further any terminal device 110 may be a remote terminal device or a relay terminal device.

[0079] Optionally, the communication environment 100 also may comprise a network device 120. The network device 120 may communicate with the terminal devices 110.

[0080] In the following, for the purpose of illustration, some example embodiments are described with the terminal device 110 operating as a UE and the network device 120 operating as a base station. However, in some example embodiments, operations described in connection with a terminal device may be implemented at a network device or other device, and operations described in connection with a network device may be implemented at a terminal device or other device.

[0081] In some example embodiments, if the terminal device 110 is a terminal device and the network device 120 is a network device, a link from the network device 120 to the terminal device 110 is referred to as a downlink (DL) , while a link from the terminal device 110 to the network device 120 is referred to as an uplink (UL) . In DL, the network device 120 is a transmitting (TX) device (or a transmitter) and the terminal device 110 is a receiving (RX) device (or a receiver) . In UL, the terminal device 110 is a TX device (or a transmitter) and the network device 120 is a RX device (or a receiver) .

[0082] The communications in the communication environment 100 may conform to any suitable standards including, but not limited to, Global System for Mobile Communications (GSM) , Long Term Evolution (LTE) , LTE-Evolution, LTE-Advanced (LTE-A) , New Radio (NR) , Wideband Code Division Multiple Access (WCDMA) , Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA) , GSM EDGE Radio Access Network (GERAN) , Machine Type Communication (MTC) and the like. The embodiments of the present disclosure may be performed according to any generation communication protocols either currently known or to be developed in the future. Examples of the communication protocols include, but not limited to, the first generation (1G) , the second generation (2G) , 2.5G, 2.75G, the third generation (3G) , the fourth generation (4G) , 4.5G, the fifth generation (5G) communication protocols, 5.5G, 5G-Advanced networks, or the sixth generation (6G) networks.

[0083] It is to be understood that the number of devices and their connections shown in FIG. 1 are only for the purpose of illustration without suggesting any limitation. The communication environment 100 may include any suitable number of network devices and / or terminal devices adapted for implementations of example embodiments of the present disclosure. Although not shown, it would be appreciated that one or more additional devices may be located in the cell, and one or more additional cells may be deployed in the communication environment 100.

[0084] In some embodiments, a protocol stack for a control plane for sidelink control channel (SCCH) for radio resource control (RRC) in the PC5 interface consists of RRC, packet data convergence protocol (PDCP) , radio link control (RLC) and medium access control (MAC  sublayers) , and the physical (PHY) layer. Protocol stacks 210 of control plane of two terminal devices (UE A and UE B) for SCCH for RRC is shown in FIG. 2A.

[0085] In some embodiments, for support of the PC5-Sprotocol, a PC5-Ssublayer is located on top of PDCP, RLC and MAC sublayers, and the PHY layer in the control plane protocol stack for SCCH for PC5-S, as shown in example protocol stacks 220 in FIG. 2B.

[0086] The RRC sublayer provides the following services and functions over the PC5 interface, including transferring of a PC5-RRC message between peer terminal devices, maintenance and release of a PC5-RRC connection between two terminal devices, and detection of sidelink radio link failure for a PC5-RRC connection. A PC5-RRC connection is a logical connection between two UEs for a pair of Source and Destination Layer-2 IDs which is considered to be established after a corresponding PC5 unicast link is established. There is one-to-one correspondence between the PC5-RRC connection and the PC5 unicast link.

[0087] In the case of U2U relay involved, an example protocol stack 230 of an end-to-end (E2E) user plane for U2U relay between two terminal devices, which includes Internet Protocol (IP) , Non-IP sublayers, Service Data Adaptation Protocol (SDAP) sublayer on top of PDCP, RLC and MAC sublayers, and the PHY layer. FIG. 2C illustrates user plane protocol stacks 230 using a U2U relay. An Adaptation layer is included on top of the RLC layer for the U2U relay, and is include between the RLC layer and PDCP layer for UE1 and UE2. As for the user plane, the security is established end to end between two terminal devices (UE1 and UE2) . Therefore, user data is never exposed at the relay node since the relay function does not process / apply any security on the relayed packets. Both IP traffic and Non-IP traffic are supported.

[0088] Figure 2D illustrates control plane protocol stacks 240 using a U2U relay. In the E2E control plane, a PC5-Ssublayer is located on top of PDCP, Adaptation, RLC and MAC sublayers, and the PHY layer. The security is established end to end between UE1 and UE2 as shown by the PDCP layer terminating in UE1 and UE2. Therefore, the E2E PC5-Smessage between UE1 and UE2 is never exposed at the relay node since the relay function does not process / apply any security on the relayed E2E PC5-Smessages.

[0089] Figure 2E illustrates control plane protocol stacks 250 using a U2U relay. In the E2E control plane, an RRC is located on top of PDCP, Adaptation, RLC and MAC sublayers, and the PHY layer. The security is established end to end between UE1 and UE2 as shown by the PDCP layer terminating in UE1 and UE2.

[0090] It would be appreciated that the protocol stacks illustrated in FIGS. 2A-2E are provided for the purpose of illustration only without suggesting any limitation. Other protocol stacks may also be applicable to support the relayed communications or direct communication between terminal devices.

[0091] In the U2U relay scenario, both end-to-end RLF and PC5 hop RLF may be detected. Generally speaking, when RLF of end-to-end PC5-RRC connection is detected, the end UE will release the end-to-end RRC connection directly. However, in case of multiplexing, an improper release may interrupt the commination on other links.

[0092] Further, there may be multiple U2U link. In this event, if a PC5 hop RLF is detected, the PC5 hop RLF cannot be well identified in legacy solution. Thus, how to notify the failed PC5 hop RLF is desirable to be further discussed.

[0093] Finally, in case of multi-hop scenario, a relay terminal device also may detect PC5 hop RLF. In this event, it is expected that the relay terminal device may assist to recovery the failed hop / link.

[0094] According to some of the embodiments of the present disclosure, at least part of the above problems may be solved.

[0095] EXAMPLE PROCESSES

[0096] Reference is made to FIGS. 3-5, which illustrate signaling flows 300, 400 and 500 for communication in accordance with some embodiments of the present disclosure. For the purposes of discussion, the signaling flows 300, 400 and 500 will be discussed with reference to FIG. 1, for example, by using the terminal devices 110.

[0097] In the following descriptions, while operations are depicted in a particular order, this should not be understood as requiring that such operations be performed in the particular order shown or in sequential order, or that all illustrated operations be performed, to achieve desirable results. In certain circumstances, multitasking and parallel processing may be advantageous. Likewise, while several specific implementation details are contained in the above discussions, these should not be construed as limitations on the scope of the present disclosure, but rather as descriptions of features that may be specific to particular embodiments. Certain features that are described in the context of separate embodiments may also be implemented in  combination in a single embodiment. Conversely, various features that are described in the context of a single embodiment may also be implemented in multiple embodiments separately or in any suitable sub-combination.

[0098] It is to be understood that the operations among the terminal devices 110 should be coordinated. In other words, the terminal devices 110 should have common understanding about configurations, parameters and so on. Such common understanding may be implemented by any suitable interactions between the terminal devices 110 or applying the same rule / policy. In the following, although some operations are described from a perspective of one terminal device 110, it is to be understood that the corresponding operations should be performed by the other terminal device 110.

[0099] In the following, the first link consists of the terminal devices 110-1, 110-3, 110-4, 110-2, which are sequentially connected. Further, the terminal device 110-3 is the neighbor terminal device of the terminal device 110-1; the terminal device 110-1 and the terminal device 110-4 are the neighbor terminal devices of the terminal device 110-3; the terminal device 110-3 and the terminal device 110-2 are the neighbor terminal devices of the terminal device 110-4; and the terminal device 110-4 is the neighbor terminal device of the terminal device 110-2.

[0100] Further, the terminal device 110 may detect an RLF on a PC5 hop between the terminal device and its neighbor terminal device. Further, the terminal device 110 may receive the RLF information on a PC5 hop from other terminal device.

[0101] Reference is made in FIG. 3 first. Signaling flows 300 in FIG. 3 will be discussed by using terminal devices 110-1, 110-2, 110-3, 110-4 and 110-7.

[0102] In FIG. 3, the terminal devices 110-1, 110-2 and 110-7 are referred to as remote terminal devices 110-1, 110-2 and 110-7, respectively; the terminal devices 110-3 and 110-4 are referred to as relay terminal devices 110-3 and 110-4, respectively. The link between the remote terminal device 110-1 and remote terminal device 110-2 is referred to as the first link.

[0103] In operation, the terminal device (such as, the remote terminal device 110-1 or the relay terminal device 110-3) detect 340 an event related to releasing the first link (such as link #1 in FIG. 1) between a first remote terminal device (the remote terminal device 110-1) and a second remote terminal device (the remote terminal device 110-2) .

[0104] In some embodiments, as for the remote terminal device 110-1, detecting the event may comprise one of the following:

[0105] detecting an end-to-end radio link failure (RLF) of the first link, such as, detecting an end-to-end PC5 RLF;

[0106] detecting a PC5 RLF of the first link, such as, detecting per-hop PC5 RLF;

[0107] receiving 310 a first indication from the second remote terminal device (the remote terminal device 110-2) , the first indication indicating the first remote terminal device (the remote terminal device 110-1) to release the first link, such as, the source remote terminal device being requested by the target remote terminal device; or

[0108] receiving 320 a second indication indicating the PC5 RLF of the hop, such as, the source remote terminal device being indicated with per-hop PC5 RLF; or

[0109] receiving a third indication from an upper layer of the first remote terminal device, the third indication indicating the end-to-end RLF of the first link.

[0110] In some embodiments, as for the relay terminal device 110-3, detecting the event may comprises one of the following:

[0111] receiving 330 a fourth indication from the first remote terminal device (the remote terminal device 110-1) , the fourth indication indicating end-to-end radio link failure (RLF) of the first link;

[0112] receiving 330 a fourth indication from the first remote terminal device (the remote terminal device 110-1) , the fourth indication indicating the relay terminal device 110-3 to release the hop between the relay terminal device 110-3 and the relay terminal device 110-4;

[0113] receiving 330 a fourth indication from the first remote terminal device (the remote terminal device 110-1) , the fourth indication indicating the releasing of the first link;  receiving 330 a fourth indication from the first remote terminal device (the remote terminal device 110-1) , the fourth indication indicating the relay terminal device 110-3 to perform a re-selection of a relay terminal device (or a cell re-selection) ; or

[0114] receiving 330 a fourth indication from the first remote terminal device 110-1, the fourth indication indicating the relay terminal device 110-3 to establish a direct link with the second remote terminal device (the remote terminal device 110-2) or reselect  another relay to connect to second remote terminal device (the remote terminal device 110-2) .

[0115] In some embodiments, upon detecting the event related to releasing the first link, the terminal device (such as, the remote terminal device 110-1 or the relay terminal device 110-3) may release 370 a PC5 hop between the terminal device and a neighbor terminal device of the terminal device if the PC5 hop is not multiplexed among the first link and at least one other link.

[0116] That is, the terminal device (such as, the remote terminal device 110-1 or the relay terminal device 110-3) may keep a PC5 hop between the terminal device and a neighbor terminal device of the terminal device if the PC5 hop is multiplexed among the first link and at least one other link.

[0117] In some embodiments, upon an end-to-end RLF and / or PC5 hop RLF, the terminal device 110 may determine whether to release or keep the link / hop according to whether the terminal device 110 / the failed hop is multiplexed among the first link and at least one other link.

[0118] In some scenarios, the terminal device 110 may detect other event which may trigger a release of the first link / PC5 hop. In other embodiments, once the terminal device 110 detects such event rather than the end-to-end RLF and / or PC5 hop RLF, the terminal device may determine whether to release or keep the link / hop according to whether the terminal device 110 / the failed hop is multiplexed among the first link and at least one other link.

[0119] Refer to FIG. 1 for a better understanding. In FIG. 1, upon detecting the event related to releasing the first link, the remote terminal device 110-1 may keep the hop between the remote terminal device 110-1 and the relay terminal device 110-3.

[0120] Further, in FIG. 1, upon detecting the event related to releasing the first link, the relay terminal device 110-3 may keep the hop between the relay terminal device 110-3 and the remote terminal device 110-1 (and the hop between the relay terminal device 110-3 and the relay terminal device 110-4) .

[0121] In some embodiments, along with releasing the PC5 hop, the terminal device (such as, the remote terminal device 110-1 or the relay terminal device 110-3) may release all of the radio bearer mappings configured on the PC5 hop (including mappings  configured for / to the remote terminal device 110-1 or the relay terminal device 110-3) .

[0122] In this way, the signalling overhead for re-establishing the hop may be saved. In some embodiments, upon determining to release the E2E PC5 connection, the source terminal device (such as, the remote terminal device 110-1) may release the per-hop PC5 connection if the per-hop PC5 connection is not shared by other target terminal device (such as, the remote terminal device 110-7) .

[0123] Alternatively, in some embodiments, upon detecting the event related to releasing the first link, the terminal device (such as, the remote terminal device 110-1 or the relay terminal device 110-3) may release 370 an RLC channel between the terminal device and a neighbor terminal device of the terminal device if the RLC channel is not multiplexed among the first link and at least one other link.

[0124] That is, the terminal device (such as, the remote terminal device 110-1 or the relay terminal device 110-3) may keep an RLC channel between the terminal device and a neighbor terminal device of the terminal device if the RLC channel is multiplexed among the first link and at least one other link.

[0125] In some embodiments, along with releasing the RLC channel, the terminal device (such as, the remote terminal device 110-1 or the relay terminal device 110-3) may release at least one radio bearer mapping configured on the RLC channel (including mappings configured for / to the remote terminal device 110-1 or the relay terminal device 110-3) .

[0126] In some embodiments, PC5 RLC relay channels shared by multiple UE pairs may be kept. In other words, PC5 RLC relay channels only used by the first link may be released.

[0127] Alternatively, in some embodiments, upon detecting the event related to releasing the first link, the remote terminal device 110-1 may keep 360 at least one configuration of the first link and may perform one of the following: a re-selection 350 of a relay terminal device (either at a remote terminal device or at a relay terminal device) , an initiation of discovering and / or establishing 350 a direct link with the second remote terminal device (either at a remote terminal device or at a relay terminal device) .

[0128] In some embodiments, upon detecting the event related to releasing the first link, the remote terminal device 110-1 may perform the relay terminal device reselection and  try to select another relay terminal device to establish another indirect link. Alternatively, in some embodiments, upon detecting the event related to releasing the first link, the remote terminal device 110-1 may try to discovery the target remote terminal device and try to connect to the target remote terminal device via a direct link. Additionally, in some embodiments, the remote terminal device 110-1 may trigger both the reselection and the discovery procedure.

[0129] In some embodiments, if the direct link is available and relay terminal device may be re-selected, the remote terminal device 110-1 may determine to select the direct link or indirect link. Alternatively, the remote terminal device 110-1 may prefer to select the direct link if the direct link is available.

[0130] In some embodiments, the direct link to the target remote terminal device may be considered to be available if SD-RSRP is above a pre-configured threshold.

[0131] In some embodiments, the at least one configuration of the first link to be kept may be associated with at least one of the following: service data adaptation protocol (SDAP) layer, or packet data convergence protocol (PDCP) layer, PC5-signalling layer or radio resource control protocol (RRC) layer.

[0132] In this way, even a lower layer failure is occurred, the upper configuration may be kept in some cases, for example, when the lower layer failure is recovering.

[0133] In some embodiments, upon detecting both an available relay terminal device and an available direct link, the remote terminal device 110-1 may determine whether to use the available direct link or the available relay terminal device to communicate with the second remote terminal device.

[0134] In some embodiments, the remote terminal device 110-1 may release the at least one configuration of the first link upon at least one of:

[0135] failing to detect an available relay terminal device,

[0136] failing to detect an available direct link,

[0137] a failed re-selection of the relay terminal device, or

[0138] a failed establishment of the direct link.

[0139] Additionally, in some embodiments, keeping the first link (keeping the at least one upper layer configuration of the first link) may be performed conditionally.  Specifically, in some embodiments the terminal device 110-1 may perform the keeping the first link in case that an end-to-end radio link failure (RLF) of the first link is cause by: detecting a PC5-signaling (PC5-S) link failure of the first link; or an expiry of a keep-alive timer, or an expiry of T400.

[0140] In some embodiments the terminal device 110-1 may perform the keeping of the first link in case that an end-to-end radio link failure (RLF) of the first link is cause by: receiving an indication of PC5-Slink failure for E2E link from upper layer (e.g., PC5-S) , or T400 expiry for a specific destination / target terminal device.

[0141] As the keep-alive timer may be ignored when determining whether to release the at least one upper layer configuration of the first link, further improvements on the keep-alive timer (or T400 timer) may be proposed. In some embodiments, in case of U2U relay after receiving a keep-alive timer (or T400 timer) configuration for the remote terminal device 110-2, the remote terminal device 110-1 may ignore the keep-alive timer (or T400 timer) configuration. Alternatively, in some embodiments, the remote terminal device 110-1 may ignore an expiry of the keep-alive timer (or T400 timer) . That is, in case of U2U relay the remote terminal device 110-1 does not indicate the timer-out issue to the lower layer, or upon the expiry, the remote terminal device 110-1 does not release the end-to-end configuration.

[0142] Reference is made in FIG. 4. Signaling flows 400 in FIG. 4 will be discussed by using terminal devices 110-1, 110-2, 110-3, 110-4 and 110-5.

[0143] In FIG. 4, the terminal devices 110-1 and 110-2 are referred to as remote terminal devices 110-1 and 110-2, respectively; the terminal devices 110-3, 110-4 and 110-5 are referred to as relay terminal devices 110-3, 110-4 and 110-5, respectively. The link between the remote terminal device 110-1 and remote terminal device 110-2 is referred to as the first link.

[0144] In operation, the terminal device (such as, the remote terminal device 110-1, the relay terminal device 110-3 or the relay terminal device 110-4) may determine a radio link failure (RLF) of a PC5 hop on a first link between a first remote terminal device and a second remote terminal device, the PC5 hop is on the connection between the terminal device and the second remote terminal device.

[0145] Then, the terminal device (such as, the remote terminal device 110-1, the relay  terminal device 110-3 or the relay terminal device 110-4) may trigger a first relay terminal device (i.e., the relay terminal device 110-3 in FIG. 4) to perform at least one of the following: a re-selection of a relay terminal device, or an establishment of a direct link with the second remote terminal device (i.e., the remote terminal device 110-2) .

[0146] As illustrated in FIG. 4, the terminal device 110-3 may determine the RLF of the PC5 hop (PC5 hop #1 or PC5 hop #2) , and the terminal device 110-3 may trigger a re-selection of a relay terminal device, or an establishment of a direct link with the second remote terminal device (i.e., the remote terminal device 110-2) .

[0147] As illustrated in FIG. 4, the remote terminal device 110-1 may determine the RLF of the PC5 hop (PC5 hop #1, PC5 hop #2 or PC5 hop #3) , and transmit 410-1 a first message to the first relay terminal device (i.e., the relay terminal device 110-3) . In some embodiments, the remote terminal device 110-1 may detect the RLF of the PC5 hop #1 by itself. In some embodiments, the remote terminal device 110-1 may receive an indication from the relay terminal device 110-3, where the indication may indicate the RLF of the PC5 hop #2.

[0148] Further, the relay terminal device 110-4 may detect the RLF of the PC5 hop #3, and may transmit an indication indicating the RLF of the PC5 hop #3 to the relay terminal device 110-3. The relay terminal device 110-3 may forward this indication to the remote terminal device 110-1. In this event, the remote terminal device may receive an indication indicating the RLF of the PC5 hop #3 from the relay terminal device 110-3.

[0149] Alternatively, as illustrated in FIG. 4, the relay terminal device 110-4 may determine the RLF of the PC5 hop (PC5 hop #2 or PC5 hop #3) , and transmit 410-2 a first message to the first relay terminal device (i.e., the relay terminal device 110-3) . The first message may indicate at least one of the following:

[0150] first information indicating the first relay terminal device to perform the re-selection of the relay terminal device,

[0151] second information indicating the first relay terminal device to perform the establishment of the direct link, or

[0152] third information indicating the RLF of the PC5 hop.

[0153] In some embodiments, the first relay terminal device (i.e., the relay terminal device 110-3) may perform 420 the re-selection of the relay terminal device based on at  least one of the following:

[0154] a first quality of service (QoS) between the terminal device and the reselected relay terminal device,

[0155] a second quality of service (QoS) between the reselected relay terminal device and the second remote terminal device,

[0156] a third quality of service (QoS) between the first remote terminal device and the second remote terminal device, or

[0157] a reachability between the relay terminal device and the second remote terminal device.

[0158] In some embodiments, upon detecting an available relay terminal device and an available direct link, the terminal device (i.e., the relay terminal device 110-3) may determine whether to use the direct link or the available relay terminal device.

[0159] In some embodiments, the re-selection / establishment procedure may be performed conditionally. Specifically, the terminal device (i.e., the relay terminal device 110-3) may perform the re-selection of the relay terminal device / establishment is a direct link if the terminal device is not multiplexed among the first link and at least one other link. Refer to FIG. 1, the relay terminals device 110-4 may be allowed to perform the re-selection / establishment, and the relay terminals device 110-3 may not be allowed to perform the re-selection / establishment.

[0160] In some embodiments, the first relay terminal device (i.e., the relay terminal device 110-3) may transmit 430-1 to the first remote terminal device (the remote terminal device 110-1) and / or 430-2 to the second relay terminal device (the terminal device 110-4) , a second message indicating at least one of the following:

[0161] fourth information indicating a result of the re-selection of the relay terminal device, either a successful or failed result, or

[0162] fifth information indicating a result of the establishment of the direct link, either a successful or failed result.

[0163] In some embodiments, the transmission of the fourth information is conditionally. Specifically, the fourth information may be transmitted only in case that the re-selection is successful / failed.

[0164] In some embodiments, the transmission of the fifth information is conditionally. Specifically, the fifth information may be transmitted only in case that the establishment is successful / failed.

[0165] In some embodiments, the connection between the source remote terminal device and the U2U relay terminal device may be kept during the reselection. Refer to FIG. 4 for a better understanding, if a relay terminal device re-selection is performed by the relay terminal device 110-3, the connection between the remote terminal device 110-1 and the relay terminal device 110-3 may be kept.

[0166] In some embodiments, if the relay terminal device finishes the reselection successfully, the relay terminal device may or may not notify the source remote terminal device.

[0167] In some embodiments, if the relay terminal device fails to re-select an available relay terminal device or discovery an available direct path, the relay terminal device may notify the source remote terminal device.

[0168] In some embodiments, upon receiving the failure indication of re-selection or establishment, the source remote terminal device may initiate another relay terminal device re-selection or direct link establishment, which may be executed by itself or by other relay terminal (s) . Alternatively, or in addition, upon receiving the failure indication of re-selection or establishment, the source remote terminal device may release the connection between the remote terminal device 110-1 and the relay terminal device 110-3. Additionally, the relay terminal device associated with the failed re-selection or establishment may be bypassed / excluded by the remote terminal device.

[0169] In some embodiments, the remote terminal device 110-1 may determine which relay terminal device to perform the re-selection or direct link establishment. Alternatively, the remote terminal device 110-1 may request a relay terminal device to determine which relay terminal device to perform the re-selection or direct link establishment.

[0170] In some embodiments, the relay terminal device may report the time period have used for (or required for) performing the re-selection / establishment to the remote terminal device first. And if the time period exceeds a threshold, the remote terminal device may not initiate the relay terminal device to perform the re-selection / establishment and / or  release the connection with the relay terminal device / the peer remote terminal device directly.

[0171] In some embodiments, upon detect a PC5 hop RLF, the relay terminal device may determine whether to report the PC5 hop RLF or initiate a re-selection according to a pre-configured rule.

[0172] In the following, how to identify the PC5 hop which is suffering RLF will be discussed in detail.

[0173] Reference is made in FIG. 5. Signaling flows 500 in FIG. 5 will be discussed by using terminal devices 110-1, 110-2, 110-3, 110-4 and 110-9.

[0174] In FIG. 5, the terminal devices 110-1, 110-2 and 110-9 are referred to as remote terminal devices 110-1, 110-2 and 110-9, respectively; the terminal devices 110-3 and 110-4 are referred to as relay terminal devices 110-3 and 110-4, respectively. The link between the remote terminal device 110-1 and remote terminal device 110-2 is referred to as the first link.

[0175] In operation, the relay terminal device 110-3 may determine a radio link failure (RLF) of a PC5 hop (such as PC5 hop #2 and PC5 hop #3, referred to as the first hop) between the relay terminal device 110-3 and a first terminal device (may be a remote terminal device such as 110-9 or a relay terminal device such as 110-4) .

[0176] The relay terminal device 110-3 may transmit 520-1 / 520-2 a fifth indication to a second terminal device (may be a remote terminal device or a relay terminal device) , the fifth indication indicating the PC5 hop failure of the first hop.

[0177] In some embodiments, the fifth indication comprises at least one of the following:  a first hop identity of the hop being unique with respect to the first link,

[0178] an identity of the first link,

[0179] a pair of terminal device identities corresponding to the first link,

[0180] a pair of terminal device identities corresponding to the PC5 hop, or

[0181] a second hop identity of the hop being unique with respect to a plurality of links comprising the first link.

[0182] In some embodiments, if a link is not multiplexed with other link, a hop in the  link may be identified by a hop identity. That is, there is no need to indicate which link does the hop belong to.

[0183] In some embodiments, a link may be identified by an identify (ID) of a link, which may be identified by a unique / global link ID, an ID of the source / target terminal device of the link, a pair of {source terminal device, target terminal device} , and so on. Refer to FIG. 1 for a better understanding. The first link may be identified by any of: a unique / global link ID, an ID of the remote terminal device 110-1, an ID of the remote terminal device 110-2, or {an ID of the remote terminal device 110-1, an ID of the remote terminal device 110-2} .

[0184] As a general rule, the hop-related information should be recognizable for the receiver. In the other embodiments, the failed hop may be identified by any other suitable parameters.

[0185] In some embodiments, the hop identity for a same hop may have different values at different terminal devices. For example, the PC5 hop #1 may identified by ID “1” at the remoter terminal device 110-1, while may identified by ID “4” at the remoter terminal device 110-2.

[0186] In some embodiments, the relay terminal device 110-3 may receive 530-2 a sixth indication from the first terminal device (the relay terminal device 110-4) , where the sixth indication may indicate a PC5 failure of a second PC5 hop between the first terminal device and a third terminal device (such as, a hop between the relay terminal device 110-4 and the remote terminal device 110-2, the PC5 hop #4) . The relay terminal device 110-3 may transmit 530-1 the sixth indication to the second terminal device (i.e., the remote terminal device 110-1) .

[0187] Alternatively, upon detecting the RLF on the PC5 hop #4, the relay terminal 110-4 may indicate the RLF on the PC5 hop #4 to the remote terminal device 110-1 directly, via an end-to-end upper connection (such as, PC5-Sor PC5 RRC signalling) .

[0188] In some embodiments, for the per-hop RLF of the first hop (i.e., a PC5 hop between the source remote terminal device and the first relay terminal device, the PC5 hop #1 in FIG. 5) detected by the relay terminal device 110-3, the relay terminal device 110-3 may not notify the remote terminal device 110-1 about the RLF of the first hop (i.e., the PC5 hop #1 in FIG. 5) .

[0189] Additionally, in some embodiments, if the reason of RLF is HARQ DTX, reaching the max-re-transmission number, the relay terminal device 110-3 may not notify the remote terminal device 110-1 about the RLF of the first hop (i.e., the PC5 hop #1 in FIG. 5) .

[0190] In some embodiments, the relay terminal device 110-3 may notify its neighbor terminal device about the PC5 hop RLF by using an indication to identify the first hop (i.e., the PC5 hop #1 in FIG. 5) (for a specific pair of source remote terminal device and target remote terminal device) which is suffering the RLF.

[0191] In some embodiments, a hop may be identified by an identify (ID) of a hop, which may be identified by a unique / global hop ID, an ID of the source / target terminal device of a link comprising the hop, a pair of {terminal device, terminal device} corresponding to the hop, and so on.

[0192] In some embodiments, the indication may be an ID of the first hop (such as, an ID of the remote terminal device 110-2, ID of Relay terminal device 110-3, a local ID of the first hop, a global / unique ID of the first hop, a pair of {ID of the terminal device 110-1, ID of the terminal device 110-3} ) .

[0193] In some embodiments, for the per-hop RLF of the second hop (i.e., the PC5 hop #2 in FIG. 5) detected by the relay terminal device 110-3, the notification message of RLF (such as, the fifth indication in FIG. 5, also may be the sixth indication in FIG. 5) to the remote terminal device 110-1 may include an indication to identify the second hop (the PC5 hop #2) . In some embodiments, the indication may be ID of the second hop (the PC5 hop #2) (such as, an ID of the remote terminal device 110-2, ID of Relay terminal device 110-3, a local ID of the second hop, a global / unique ID of the second hop, a pair of {ID of the terminal device 110-1, ID of the terminal device 110-3} ) .

[0194] In some embodiments, considering the remote terminal device 110-1 is connected to multiple target remote terminal device via the same relay terminal device (the remote terminal device 110-1 is connected to the target remote terminal devices 110-2 and 110-9 via the same relay terminal device 110-3) , a notification message (such as, the fifth indication in FIG. 5, also may be the sixth indication in FIG. 5) of RLF may include an indication / identification to identify the source-destination terminal device pair or the target terminal device, such that the remote terminal device may understand which link occurs the RLF. In one example, the indication / identification comprises a first hop  identity of the hop being unique with respect to the first link and an identity of the first link (or a pair of terminal device identities corresponding to the first link) . In another example, the indication indicating a global ID of the hop. In the other example, the indication may comprise any other suitable parameter (s) .

[0195] In some embodiments, any of the following information may be configured / assigned by a network device / remote terminal device / relay terminal device: identity information used for identifying a hop, identity information used for identifying a link, mapping information between a hop and a link. Further, such information should be known / identifiable to the related terminal device, such that when the terminal device receives an indication that indicating the RLF on a PC5 hop, the terminal device may correctly identify the related PC5 hop.

[0196] In order to ensure the proper identifying on the related PC5 hop, the terminal devices 110 should have a common understanding about the above information. In view of this, if the above information is configured by the network device, the network device should transmit the above information to the terminal devices 110; if the above information is configured by the remote / relay terminal device, the remote / relay terminal device should transmit the above information to the relay / remote terminal device.

[0197] In some embodiments, the ID for a specific hop may comprise one of the following: a specific pair of source terminal device and a target terminal device, an ID of the hop, a pair of source terminal device and a target terminal device.

[0198] In some embodiments, for the per-hop RLF of the second hop detected by the relay terminal device, the ID source and target terminal device pair may be a pair of {ID of the source remote terminal device, ID of the target remote terminal device } .

[0199] In some embodiments, the ID of the source remote terminal device and / or ID of the target remote terminal device may be an L2 ID, e.g., 4 bits, 8bits, 16bits, 24bits, or n*8bits.

[0200] In some embodiments, the ID of the source remote terminal device may be a local ID / short ID / temp ID of the source terminal device, while the ID of the target remote terminal device may be a local ID / short ID / temp ID of the target terminal device.

[0201] In some embodiments, the S-UE ID and / or T-UE ID may be L2 ID, local ID / short ID / temp ID assigned to T-UE.

[0202] In some embodiments, ID for the source-destination UE pair / ID for the connection of source-destination UE may be local ID / short ID / temp ID assigned to this pair / connection.

[0203] In some embodiments, ID for the source-destination UE pair / ID for the connection of source-destination UE may be unified for each hop / different for each hop.

[0204] In some embodiments, the relay terminal device may notify the per hop RLF to its neighbor terminal device (s) of the related pair of source terminal device and target terminal device.

[0205] In some embodiments, the relay terminal device only may notify the neighbor relay terminal device closer to the source terminal device / target terminal device.

[0206] In some embodiments, the rule for determining the neighbor relay terminal device / source terminal device / target terminal device to receive the RLF notification message may be defined to be a default configuration, or configured by the network device 120 / source terminal device / target terminal device.

[0207] In some embodiments, the remote terminal device 110-1 may request the relay terminal device which is suffering / detects the RLF or the relay terminal device which reports the RLF to perform reselection / establishment. For example, the remote terminal device 110-1 nay transmit a message to the related relay terminal device to trigger a reselection / establishment, and the message may be a L2 signalling (such as RRC, MAC CE, RLC control PDU) or sidelink control information (SCI) .

[0208] Refer to FIG. 5. The relay terminal device 110-4 may detect a RLF on the PC5 hop #4, and the relay terminal device 110-4 may notify this RLF of the PC5 hop #4 to the relay terminal device 110-3, for example, transmitting a fifth indication to the relay terminal device 110-3, wherein the fifth indication comprises related information used for identifying the RLF of the PC5 hop #4.

[0209] The relay terminal device 110-3 may forward 520-1 the received fifth indication to the remote terminal device 110-1. With this fifth indication, the remote terminal device 110-1 may understand that there is a RLF on the PC5 hop #4.

[0210] Optionally, the remote terminal device 110-1 may understand that the RLF relay the PC5 hop #4 is detected by the relay terminal device 110-4 and reported by the relay terminal device 110-3. The remote terminal device 110 may indicates either the relay  terminal device 110-4 or the relay terminal device 110-3 to perform a relay terminal device reselection / direct link establishment.

[0211] In order to better support self-optimizing networks (SON) and mini-mization of drive test (MDT) , the remote terminal device and / or the relay terminal device may record the RLF information including per-hop RLF and / or end-to-end RLF, such as, Hop ID, link ID, pair of the source terminal device and the target terminal device and so on. The RLF may be detected by the terminal device itself or indicated by other terminal device or an upper layer of the terminal device. Alternatively, or in addition, in some embodiments, the remote terminal device and the relay terminal device may record results about relay terminal device re-selection and / or direct link establishment.

[0212] In some embodiments, when the remote terminal device re-selects back to the old relay terminal device or establishes a link with the network device 120, the remote terminal device may report the recorded information.

[0213] In some embodiments, when the relay terminal device establishes a link with the network device 120, the relay terminal device may report the recorded information to the network device 120.

[0214] In some embodiments, when the relay terminal device is selected as a relay terminal device by a remote terminal device it ever served, the relay terminal device may report the recorded information to the remote terminal device. Additionally, only report information related to the remote terminal device.

[0215] Refer to FIG. 5 for a better understanding. The relay terminal device 110-3 detects a RLF on the PC5 hop #2, and the relay terminal device 110-3 may record the RLF of the PC5 hop #2. Additionally, the relay terminal device 110-3 may trigger a relay terminal device reselection and the terminal device 110-5 may be selected by the terminal device 110-3. Then after the successful re-selection, the relay terminal device 110-3 may report the RLF on the PC5 hop #2 and the successful re-selection information to the terminal device 110-2 (i.e., the target terminals device) .

[0216] EXAMPLE METHODS

[0217] FIG. 6 illustrates a flowchart of a communication method 600 implemented at a terminal device in accordance with some embodiments of the present disclosure. For the  purpose of discussion, the method 600 will be described from the perspective of the terminal device 110 in FIG. 1.

[0218] At block 610, the terminal device 110 detects an event related to releasing a first link between a first remote terminal device and a second remote terminal device.

[0219] At block 620, the terminal device 110 performs one of the following: releasing a PC5 hop between the terminal device and a neighbor terminal device of the terminal device if the PC5 hop is not multiplexed among the first link and at least one other link; releasing a radio link control (RLC) channel between the terminal device and a neighbor terminal device of the terminal device if the RLC channel is not multiplexed among the first link and at least one other link; and if the terminal device is the first remote terminal device, keeping at least one configuration of the first link upon one of the following: a re-selection of a relay terminal device, an initiation of establishing a direct link with the second remote terminal device.

[0220] In some example embodiments, along with releasing the RLC channel, the terminal device 110 may release at least one radio bearer mapping configured on the RLC channel; or along with releasing the PC5 hop, the terminal device 110 may release all of the radio bearer mappings configured on the PC5 hop.

[0221] In some example embodiments, the terminal device is the first remote terminal device, and the event is one of the following: detecting an end-to-end radio link failure (RLF) of the first link; detecting a PC5 RLF of the first link; receiving a first indication from the second remote terminal device, the first indication indicating the first remote terminal device to release the first link; or receiving a second indication indicating the PC5 RLF of the hop; or receiving a third indication from an upper layer of the first remote terminal device, the third indication indicating the end-to-end RLF of the first link.

[0222] In some example embodiments, the terminal device is a relay terminal device, and the event is one of the following: receiving a fourth indication from the first remote terminal device, the fourth indication indicating end-to-end radio link failure (RLF) of the first link.

[0224] In some example embodiments, the terminal device is the first remote terminal device, and upon detecting an available relay terminal device and an available direct link, the terminal device 110 may determine whether to use the available direct link or the available relay terminal device to communicate with the second remote terminal device, or release the at least one configuration of the first link upon at least one of: failing to detect an available relay terminal device, failing to detect an available direct link, a failed re-selection of the relay terminal device, or a failed establishment of the direct link.

[0225] In some example embodiments, the terminal device 110 may perform the keeping the first link in case that an end-to-end radio link failure (RLF) of the first link is cause by: detecting a PC5-signaling (PC5-S) link failure of the first link; an expiry of a keep-alive timer.

[0226] In some example embodiments, the terminal device 110 may receive a keep-alive timer configuration for the second remote terminal device; and ignore the keep-alive timer configuration or ignore an expiry of the keep-alive timer.

[0227] FIG. 7 illustrates a flowchart of a communication method 700 implemented at a terminal device in accordance with some embodiments of the present disclosure. For the purpose of discussion, the method 700 will be described from the perspective of the terminal device 110 in FIG. 1.

[0228] At block 710, the terminal device determines a radio link failure (RLF) of a PC5 hop on a first link between a first remote terminal device and a second remote terminal device, the PC5 hop is on the connection between the terminal device and the second remote terminal device.

[0229] At block 720, the terminal device triggers, a first relay terminal device to perform at least one of the following: a re-selection of a relay terminal device, or an establishment of a direct link with the second remote terminal device.

[0230] In some example embodiments, the terminal device is the first remote terminal device, the first relay terminal device, or a second relay terminal device.

[0231] In some example embodiments, the terminal device is the first remote terminal device or a second relay terminal device, and the terminal device may transmit, to the first relay terminal device, a first message indicating at least one of the following: first  information indicating the first relay terminal device to perform the re-selection of the relay terminal device, second information indicating the first relay terminal device to perform the establishment of the direct link, or third information indicating the RLF of the PC5 hop.

[0232] In some example embodiments, the terminal device may receive, from the first relay terminal device, a second message indicating at least one of the following: fourth information indicating a result of the re-selection of the relay terminal device, or fifth information indicating a result of the establishment of the direct link.

[0233] In some example embodiments, upon at least one of failing to detect an available relay terminal device, failing to detect an available direct link, a failed re-selection of the relay terminals device or a failed establishment of the direct link, the terminal device may perform at least one of the following: releasing the first link, releasing a connection with first relay terminal device, or triggering a third relay terminal device to perform at least one of the following: a re-selection of a relay terminal device, or an establishment of a direct link with the second remote terminal device to bypass the first PC5 hop.

[0234] In some example embodiments, the terminal device is the first relay terminal device, and the terminal device may perform the re-selection of the relay terminal device based on at least one of the following: a first quality of service (QoS) between the terminal device and the reselected relay terminal device, a second quality of service (QoS) between the reselected relay terminal device and the second remote terminal device, a third quality of service (QoS) between the first remote terminal device and the second remote terminal device, or a reachability between the relay terminal device and the second remote terminal device.
