[0030] Reference will now be made in detail to exemplary embodiments, examples of which are illustrated in the accompanying drawings. The following description refers to the accompanying drawings in which the same numbers in different drawings represent the same or similar elements unless otherwise represented. The implementations set forth in the following description of exemplary embodiments do not represent all implementations consistent with the invention. Instead, they are merely examples of apparatuses and methods consistent with aspects related to the invention as recited in the appended claims. Particular aspects of the present disclosure are described in greater detail below. The terms and definitions provided herein control, if in conflict with terms and / or definitions incorporated by reference.
[0031] FIG. 1 illustrates a structural diagram showing a top view of a micro LED display panel 100, according to some embodiments of the present disclosure. FIG. 2 illustrates a structural diagram showing a sectional view of the micro LED display panel along a section line A-A’ direction shown in FIG. 1, according to some embodiments of the present disclosure. Referring to FIG. 1 and FIG. 2, micro LED display panel 100 includes a micro LED display chip 110, a micro mechanical structure 120, and a support structure 130. Micro LED display chip 110 is configured to display images. In some embodiments, micro LED display chip 110 includes a micro LED display area which includes a plurality of micro LEDs to emit different colors of light. Micro mechanical structure 120 is provided around micro LED display chip 110 and configured to control a movement of micro LED display chip 110. Micro mechanical structure 120 can be controlled to move micro LED display chip 110 in different directions. In some embodiments, micro LED display chip 110 can be moved in a plane which micro LED display chip 110 is in, for example, micro LED display chip can be moved in two directions in the plane. As shown in FIG. 1, micro LED display chip 110 is controlled to move back and forth along a direction X and / or a direction Y. Support structure 130 is configured to support micro LED display chip 110 and micro mechanical structure 120. In some embodiments, micro LED display chip 110 is moved in a distance of one-half of a pixel of micro LED display chip 110. A micro LED pixel may include one or more micro LEDs and in some embodiments, a size of a pixel is not greater than 100 microns. In some embodiments, a displacement of the movement is not greater than 3 microns.
[0032] With such structure, micro LED display chip 110 can move slightly, for example, moving one-half of a pixel, which is equivalent to add a row or a column of micro LEDs between adjacent micro LEDs. In another word, an interpolation is inserted between pixels. Resolution can be improved for an optical module with a fixed size. Furthermore, display schemes with different frame ratios can be realized by combining the resolution and image processing algorithm.
[0033] In some embodiments, referring to FIG. 2, support structure 130 includes a base portion 131 and a frame portion 132. Base portion 131 is provided under micro LED display chip 110. Frame portion 132 is provided on an edge of base portion 131 and configured to fix micro mechanical structure 120 provided around micro LED display chip 110, therefore, support structure 130 can provide support both in a vertical direction and in a horizontal plane. In some embodiments, an air layer 140 is formed between micro LED display chip 110 and base portion 131 of support structure 130. That is, micro LED display chip 110 is suspended above base portion 131. As a result, there is no contact between micro LED display chip 110 and base portion 131. When micro LED display chip 110 moves, there is no contact with base portion 131, therefore the control of the movement can be more accurate. In some embodiments, a distance between micro LED display chip 110 and base portion 131 is in a range of several microns to tens of microns, for example, 10 microns. In some embodiments, support structure 130 is rigid, for example, a material of support structure is silicon, steel, or epoxy.
[0034] In some embodiments, micro LED display chip 110 is electrically connected with micro mechanical structure 120, so that the movement of micro LED display chip 110 controlled by micro mechanical structure 120 and a display frequency of micro LED display chip 110 can be coordinated. For example, by controlling a frame rate of image display of micro LED display chip 110 and an actuation frequency of micro mechanical structure 120, a high-resolution micro projection can be obtained using the delay effect of the human eyes.
[0035] In some embodiments, micro mechanical structure 120 further includes an actuator structure provided on at least one side of micro LED display chip 110, and a control circuit configured to control the actuator structure to move micro LED display chip 110. The actuator structure may include four parts corresponding to four sides of micro LED display chip 110. In such a configuration, each part of the actuator structure is adhered to one side of micro LED display chip 110. Therefore, micro LED display chip 110 can be moved under an action of the actuator structure. For example, as shown in FIG. 1, micro LED display chip 110 is controlled to move back and forth along a direction X and / or a direction Y. Such movement is symbolically represented by arrows 150 in FIG. 2. In some embodiments, each part of the actuator structure can be controlled independently. Therefore, the movement of micro LED display chip 110 can be controlled more accurately.
[0036] In some embodiments, the actuator structure includes piezoelectric material, and the control circuit is configured to control a deformation of the piezoelectric material to cause a movement of micro LED display chip 110. Piezoelectric materials are materials that can be deformed under an external electric field. For example, piezoelectric materials may include piezoelectric ceramics, quartz, graphene, and the like.
[0037] In some embodiments, the actuator structure is a micro electro-mechanical structure (MEMS) , and the control circuit is configured to control a displacement of the micro electro-mechanical structure. The MEMS includes mechanical elements, sensors, actuators, and electronics that are fabricated using microfabrication technology.
[0038] In some embodiments, the control circuit is a printed circuit board (PCB) . In some embodiments, the control circuit is provided on base portion 131. In some embodiments, base portion 131 is the PCB, so that support structure 130 and micro mechanical structure 120 are integrated. In some embodiments, the control circuit is a flexible circuit board and provided on base portion 131. Base portion 131 further includes a stiffener for enhancing the rigidity of the control circuit.
[0039] Since both piezoelectric material and material of MEMS comprise semiconductor materials, the actuator structure is conductive, and can be used as both a structural element and a conductive element. In some embodiments, the control circuit is electrically connected with the actuator structure by a bonding wire or a welding wire. The bonding wire can be in a variety of pure and alloy materials as well as in the shape of both round wire and flat ribbon. In some embodiments, materials for the bonding wires are gold (pure and alloys) , aluminum (pure) , aluminum plus 1%silicon, aluminum with magnesium, and the like. A welding wire is the electrode in the welding process, and in addition to functioning as the electrode side of an arc, it is itself also the filler metal that enters the molten weld pool to form the strong bond. During process, the welding wire melts from the heat of the arc and the filler metal is deposited into the weld pool. The welding wire is not limited to one kind of filler metal. For example, aluminum, stainless steel, mild steel, galvanized steel, and alloyed materials can all be welded using welding wire of various diameters. Micro LED display chip 110 is bonded with the actuator structure by glue, for example, by thermosetting adhesive or photoresist adhesive. In some embodiments, micro LED display chip 110 is connected with the actuator structure using laser welding.
[0040] In some embodiments, micro LED display chip 110 is electrically connected with the control circuit using wire bonding, for example, using gold wires.
[0041] In some embodiments, micro LED display chip 110 is electrically connected with the actuator structure by a counterpoint method. That is, a pad of micro LED display chip 110 and a pad of the actuator structure are welded directly to achieve electrical signal transmission. Therefore, there is no extra wiring needed for connecting micro LED display chip 110 and the actuator structure.
[0042] FIG. 3 illustrates a structural diagram showing a top view of micro LED display chip 110, according to some embodiments of the present disclosure. Referring to FIG. 3, micro LED display chip 110 includes a micro LED display area 111 and an IC (integrated circuit) backplane 112. Micro LED display area 111 is bonded on IC backplane 112. The rest of the area on IC backplane 112 not covered by micro LED display area 111 is formed as a non-functional area. IC backplane 112 is formed at the back surface of micro LED display area 111 with an extruded part extending outside of, i.e., not covered by, micro LED display area 111. In some embodiments, micro LED display area 111 includes a micro LED array which further includes a plurality of microLEDs113.
[0043] In some embodiments, IC backplane 112 includes a driver 155. Driver155 is configured to control each of the plurality of micro LEDs 113 of the micro LED array. For example, driver 155 may connect with each micro LED 113 and control the turn on duration and frequency of each micro LED 113. In some embodiments, driver 155 is a logic circuit.
[0044] Different types of micro LED panels can be provided. For example, the resolution of a display panel can range typically from 8×8 to 3840×2160. Common display resolutions include QVGA (Quarter Video Graphics Array) with 320×240 resolution and an aspect ratio of 4: 3, XGA (Extended Graphics Array) with 1024×768 resolution and an aspect ratio of 4: 3, D (Definition) with 1280×720 resolution and an aspect ratio of 16: 9, FHD (Full High Definition) with 1920×1080 resolution and an aspect ratio of 16: 9, UHD (Ultra High Definition) with 3840×2160 resolution and an aspect ratio of 16: 9, and 4K with 4096×2160 resolution. There can also be a wide variety of pixel sizes, ranging from sub-micron and below to 10 mm and above.
