[0043] Cell DTX and cell DRX has been introduced to improve network energy saving. The current study objectives comprise study the alignment of cell DTX / DRX and UE DRX in RRC_CONNECTED mode, and inter-node information exchange on cell DTX / DRX. Regarding the objective on cell DTX, no change for SSB transmission due to cell DTX / DRX. In addition, the impact to IDLE / INACTIVE UEs due to the above enhancement should be avoided.
[0044] The following agreements regarding cell DTX and the impact on CSI-RS transmission and related UE measurements have been made:
[0045] From RAN2 point of view for Cell DTX / DRX configuration and activation / deactivation:
[0046] However, if CSI-RS are not transmitted during non-active periods of cell DTX, then the UE measurement performance will be impacted. It could highly cause performance degradation for neighbor cell UEs as the UEs in neighbor cell may not be provided with the cell DTX pattern.
[0047] The CSI-RS can be used for both L1 measurement and for L3 mobility, and CSI-RS based measurements for L3 mobility (radio resource management, RRM) is focused in the example embodiments of the present disclosure, but the present disclosure can also be applied to CSI-RS based L1 measurement e.g. L1-RSRP or L1-signal to interference plus noise ratio (SINR) measurement. The main issue is for the UE how to handle CSI-RS based measurements if such CSI reference signals are dropped during cell DTX non-active periods. A UE may be aware of its serving cell’s DTX state, but not aware of neighbor cells’ DTX states for which is performing CSI-RS measurements. This depends on whether the cell DTX is dynamically or statically configured and activated. RAN1 / 2 has defined both Radio resource control (RRC) -based configuration and downlink control information (DCI) -based activation for cell DTX / DRX, where the cell DTX / DRX pattern is configured by RRC (which is a rather static configuration per cell) and the activation / deactivation of the cell DTX is indicated by L1 signaling (e.g. DCI) or explicitly in the RRC configuration. The RRC-based configuration could enable neighbor cell state awareness by indicating neighbor cell DTX pattern, while it is not feasible if the cell state changes e.g. activation or deactivate, are made frequently using DCI.
[0048] Fig. 1B illustrates an example scenario of CSI-RS measurement during cell DTX non-active period of neighbor cell. The top of the Fig. 1B is the scenario 1 that the cell DTX non-active period of neighbor cell is known to the UE, and the bottom of the Fig. 1B is the scenario 2 that the cell DTX non-active period of neighbor cell is unknown to the UE for example because the cell DTX is activated via L1 signaling in neighbor cell which is not visible to the UE.
[0049] Taking CSI-RS based L3 measurement as an example, the UE is expected to collect (e.g. ) 5 samples on the RS measured and apply a filtering (or average) to derive the result (e.g., average RSRP, reference signal receiving quality or SINR) . This ensures the measurement fulfills the measurement accuracy requirements as specified in TS38.133 clause 10.However, when cell DTX is activated, the UE may not be able to get certain samples if the CSI-RSs to be measured fall into the cell DTX non-active period. In order to ensure compliance to the existing measurement accuracy requirements, the measurement time or measurement delay may need to be extended in order to get enough samples (e.g., 5 samples) for filtering. This would increase the CSI-RS based measurement delay.
[0050] The problem is even worse if the UE is not aware of the activation / deactivation of cell DTX in neighbor cells. The UE just keeps measuring on the configured CSI-RS and the CSI-RS within the non-active periods would be measured with low RSRP hence falsely degrade the filtered measurement result.
[0051] According to some embodiments of the present disclosure, a solution is provided for performing an operation related to CSI-RS based measurement. In one aspect of the solution of the present disclosure, a terminal device determines that one or more CSI RSs are not received from a cell, and the terminal device is configured to perform a CSI-RS based measurement by monitoring at least one CSI-RS from the cell. Based on determining that the one or more CSI-RSs are not received, the terminal device performs an operation related to the CSI-RS based measurement based on at least one of (i) a SSB based measurement from the cell or (ii) whether the terminal device is aware of a DTX configuration of the cell. By using SSB-based measurements to determine the CSI-RS measurement behavior, network energy saving is improved and measurement time is saved. In this way, the communication efficiency is improved. Example embodiments of the present disclosure for performing an operation related to CSI-RS based measurement will be described below with reference to Figs. 2-8.
[0052] Fig. 2 illustrates a flowchart of a method 200 implemented at a terminal device in accordance with some embodiments of the present disclosure. For the purpose of discussion, the method 200 will be described from the perspective of the terminal device 110 with reference to Fig. 1A. It is to be understood that method 200 may further include additional blocks not shown and / or omit some shown blocks, and the scope of the present disclosure is not limited in this regard.
[0053] At block 210, the terminal device 110 determines that one or more CSI-RSs are not received from a cell, and the terminal device 110 is configured to perform a CSI-RS based measurement by monitoring at least one CSI-RS from the cell. In other words, the terminal device 110 may be aware of whether one or more CSI-RSs are received from a cell by monitoring at least one CSI-RS from the cell.
[0054] In some embodiments, the cell may be a serving cell or a neighbor cell of the terminal device 110. A DTX configuration may comprise a configuration of active and non-active periods in a cell DTX. Additionally, the DTX configuration may further comprise an activation or a deactivation of the cell DTX. In an example, the terminal device 110 may be aware of DTX configurations of its serving cell and its neighbor cell. In another example, the terminal device 110 may be aware of DTX configuration of its serving cell, and the terminal device 110 may be not aware of DTX configuration of its neighbor cell. Alternatively, the terminal device 110 may be aware of active and non-active periods in the cell DTX of its neighbor cell. but the terminal device 110 may not be aware of a DTX activation of its neighbor cell.
[0055] At block 220, based on determining that the one or more CSI-RSs are not received, the terminal device 110 performs an operation related to the CSI-RS based measurement based on at least one of (i) a SSB based measurement from the cell or (ii) whether the terminal device 110 is aware of a DTX configuration of the cell.
[0056] In some scenarios, the terminal device 110 may be aware of the DTX configuration of the cell. Based on the DTX configuration, the terminal device 110 can know the cell is in a non-active period of the DTX and the CSI-RS is not transmitted. Therefore, the terminal device 110 skips the CSI-RS measurement and determines the CSI-RS are not received based on the cell DTX configuration awareness. If the terminal device 110 determines that the one or more CSI-RSs are not transmitted during a non-active period of the DTX of the cell, then the terminal device 110 may perform the operation related to the CSI-RS based measurement based on the SSB based measurement.
[0057] In some examples, the CSI-RS based measurement may comprise a measurement of a CSI reference signal received power (CSI-RSRP) , CSI reference signal receiving quality (CSI-RSRQ) and / or CSI-SINR. In addition, the SSB based measurement may comprise a measurement of a synchronization signal reference signal received power (SS-RSRP) , SS-RSRQ and / or SS-SINR.
[0058] In the DTX configuration, it is defined that the CSI-RS is dropped or not transmitted during the non-active period of the DTX of the cell. In an example, the terminal device 110 is aware of cell DTX pattern of serving and neighbor cells, so the terminal device 110 knows when CSI-RSs are not transmitted in all cells it monitors or measures. Due to the SSB transmissions are not affected by the cell DTX state, the terminal device 110 can utilize the SSB-based measurement (e.g., SS-RSRP) to determine how to handle missing CSI-RS (dropped due to cell DTX) .
[0059] During non-active periods of cells whose DTX patterns is known by the terminal device 110, the terminal device 110 may monitor also SSB in addition to CSI-RS e.g., when associatedSSB is configured for the CSI-RS based measurement.
[0060] In some cases, if a measurement result of the SSB based measurement may be above a first threshold, the terminal device 110 may perform a first operation. In some embodiments, if a variation of the measurement result of the SSB based measurement is below a second threshold, the terminal device 110 may perform a first operation. In some embodiments, if a measurement result of the SSB based measurement is above a first threshold and a variation of the measurement result of the SSB based measurement is below a second threshold, the terminal device 110 may perform a first operation.
[0061] For example, if the terminal device 110 detects for a cell that the SS-RSRP is above a threshold and / or the SS-RSRP variation is within another threshold, the terminal device 110 may conclude that it is in cell center and / or it has not been moving. Therefore, the (dropped) CSI-RS, which was not transmitted and so not available to be measured for the CSI-RSRP measurement during the cell non-active time, may not impact the filtered measurement significantly.
[0062] The first operation may include or may be various one or more steps or actions. For example, the terminal device 110 can skip collecting at least one measurement sample of the CSI-RS based measurement during the non-active period of the DTX of the cell. Alternatively or additionally, the terminal device 110 may skip collecting at least one measurement sample of CSI-RS based measurement in at least one of the configured CSI-RS measurement occasions. Alternatively or additionally, the terminal device 110 may prevent from extending a measurement period or measurement delay of the CSI-RS based measurement. Alternatively or additionally, the terminal device 110 can derive an estimated measurement sample of the CSI-RS based measurement for the non-active period based on the variation of the measurement result of the SSB based measurement in the non-active period and at least one previous measurement sample of the CSI-RS based measurement. Alternatively or additionally, the terminal device 110 may derive an estimated measurement sample of the CSI-RS based measurement for the non-active period based on at least one measurement sample of the CSI-RS based measurement in the preceding active period. Alternatively or additionally, the terminal device 110 can derive an estimated measurement sample of the CSI-RS based measurement for the non-active period based on at least one measurement sample of the SSB based measurement in the non-active period.
[0063] For instance, the terminal device can skip collecting CSI-RS based measurement samples in the current cell DTX non-active period. More specifically, the terminal device may apply the original measurement period, i.e., no need to extend the period despite some samples are missing, i.e., a smaller number of samples are sufficient. Alternatively, if the number of available samples is not sufficient to ensure the sufficient accuracy, the UE may derive (for the dropped CSI-RS transmission within non-active periods) an estimated CSI-RSRP sample based on the SS-RSRP variation in the corresponding window (e.g., the non-active period) and past CSI-RSRP measurements. Additionally, the terminal device may derive an estimated CSI-RSRP based on the measured SS-RSRP.
[0064] In some embodiments, if the measurement result of the SSB based measurement is below the first threshold, the terminal device may perform a second operation. In some embodiments, if the variation of the measurement result of the SSB based measurement is above the second threshold, the terminal device may perform a second operation. In some embodiments, if the measurement result of the SSB based measurement is below the first threshold and the variation is above the second threshold, the terminal device may perform a second operation.
[0065] In some embodiments, the second operation may also include or may be various one or more steps or actions. For example, the terminal device 110 can obtain at least one additional measurement sample of the CSI-RS based measurement. Alternatively or additionally, the terminal device 110 may extend a measurement period of the CSI-RS based measurement. Alternatively or additionally, the terminal device 110 may fall back to the SSB based measurement without performing the CSI-RS based measurement. Alternatively or additionally, the terminal device 110 can transmit a request for transmission of at least one CSI-RS during the non-active period to a network device serving the cell, or any combination of two or more of the above-mentioned items.
[0066] For example, if the terminal device determines none of (i) a SSB based measurement from the cell or (ii) whether the terminal device is aware of a DTX configuration of the cell are fulfilled, the terminal device needs to obtain additional CSI-RS measurements samples to fulfil the measurement requirements. The terminal device need attempt to obtain the additional samples in active periods of the cell. Alternatively, the measurement period is extended accordingly. Additionally, the terminal device may indicate to the network the need or preference for transmitting CSI-RS during non-active time.
[0067] Alternatively, the at least one additional measurement sample of the CSI-RS based measurement is obtained in the active period. Additionally, the measurement period is extended to obtain a predetermined number of measurement examples of the CSI-RS based measurement in active periods. In an example, it has been defined that the target is for the UE to obtain (e.g. ) 5 samples in the following specification, thus the same target may be applied when extending the measurement period.
[0068] If a period for which the terminal device does not receive a CSI-RS from the cell is longer than a third threshold, the terminal device may fall back to the SSB based measurement without performing the CSI-RS based measurement. For example, the terminal device may fall back to SS-RSRP measurements only, either if the SS-RSRP is not fulfilling the conditions of (i) a SSB based measurement from the cell or (ii) whether the terminal device is aware of a DTX configuration of the cell are fulfilled, or if the CSI-RS are missing for a period is above a threshold. The UE may further indicate to the network the CSI-RS based measurement may not be performed based on the evaluation of conditions.
[0069] In some scenarios, the terminal device is unaware of the DTX configuration of the cell. If the one or more CSI-RSs are not received by the terminal device, the SSB based measurement may be performed. For example, the terminal device is aware of cell DTX configuration of its serving cell but not aware of its neighbor cells, so the UE is not aware that CSI-RS are not transmitted by the one or more neighbor cells. For the neighbor cells, the terminal device monitors also SSB in addition to CSI-RS on the neighbor cells e.g., when associatedSSB is configured for the CSI-RS based measurement.
[0070] If the terminal device determines lack of a signal power in one or more expected resources for receiving the one or more CSI-RSs, the terminal device may determine that the one or more CSI-RSs are not received by the terminal device. For example, if the CSI-RS was not received by the terminal device, the UE can determine that it was dropped.
[0071] If a measurement result of the SSB based measurement is above a fourth threshold, the terminal device may perform a first operation. In some embodiments, if a variation of the measurement result of the SSB based measurement is below a fifth threshold, the terminal device may perform a first operation. In some other embodiments, if a measurement result of the SSB based measurement is above a fourth threshold and a variation of the measurement result of the SSB based measurement is below a fifth threshold, the terminal device may perform a first operation.
[0072] For example, the terminal device can evaluate the condition above mentioned based on SS-RSRP measurement. The terminal device may determine that there is no sudden variation in SS-RSRP (based on a delta threshold) in corresponding window. If the CSI-RS is not received, the UE may assume the cell DTX is activated in neighbor cell and the neighbor cell is in the non-active time of cell DTX. Then the UE may follow the case of the terminal device is aware of the DTX configuration of the cell. The measurement sample on the CSI-RS will not be used for measurement filtering.
[0073] If the measurement result of the SSB based measurement is below the fourth threshold, the terminal device may fall back to the SSB based measurement without performing the CSI-RS based measurement. In some embodiments, if the variation is above the fifth threshold, the terminal device may fall back to the SSB based measurement without performing the CSI-RS based measurement. In some embodiments, if the measurement result of the SSB based measurement is below the fourth threshold and the variation is above the fifth threshold, the terminal device may fall back to the SSB based measurement without performing the CSI-RS based measurement. For example, if the terminal device observes a sudden variation in SS-RSRP in corresponding window and not receive an intended CSI-RSRP, the terminal device assumes that the CSI-RS is transmitted but not received due to other radio problems i.e. cell DTX is not activated, and it falls back to SSB based measurement or reports the CSI-RS based measurement result as measured.
[0074] The terminal device may receive configuration information of the CSI-RS based measurement from a network device providing a serving cell of the terminal device. The configuration information comprises at least one of the first threshold, the second threshold, the third threshold, the fourth threshold, or the fifth threshold. In some embodiments, the first threshold, the second threshold, the third threshold, the fourth threshold, the fifth threshold, or any combination of two or more of the above-mentioned items may be predetermined. For example, the thresholds can be configured by the network or defined with a default value in advance.
[0075] In some implementations, an SSB among the one or more SSBs may be indicated by configuration information of the CSI-RS based measurement as an associated SSB of a CSI-RS among the one or more CSI-RSs. In some embodiments, the SSB may be quasi co-located with the CSI-RS. In some embodiments, the SSB and the CSI-RS may be in a same transmission configuration indication (TCI) state. For example, the measured SSB shall be the associatedSSB of the CSI-RS-ResourceConfigMobility information element, the SSB which has QCL relation to the CSI-RS to be measured, or the SSB in the same TCI state of CSI-RS resource.
[0076] In general, the terminal device may determine the CSI-RS are not transmitted based on indications from the serving cell or the target neighbor cell. Alternatively, the terminal device may determine the CSI-RS was not transmitted based on determining lack of signal power in the expected resource, while also determining the SSB from the same cell is available. By determining the SSB was available, the terminal device can determine it is not in a deep fade / too far from the target cell, which means the terminal device should also have been able to receive the CSI-RS. The terminal device may derive an estimated CSI-RSRP sample based on the measured SS-RSRP. The terminal device needs to account for the SSB, and CSI-RS being measured in different time and frequency resources, that they are transmitted or received using potential different beam patterns (wide or narrow beams) , and that the transmit power may be different. In addition, the terminal device may also rely on past CSI-RS measurements for the CSI-RSRP. For example, if the variation or absolute level exceeded a certain threshold prior to the cell DTX non-active time, the terminal device can be allowed to omit the sample and instead estimate the sample based on the past CSI and / or SSB measurements.
[0077] By using SSB-based measurements to determine the CSI-RS measurement behavior the UE can save energy and time, because it will not always be forced to extend the measurement period if the channel conditions are good. Embodiments of the present disclosure enables the network to configure the UE such that the measurement performance is maintained despite the CSI-RS being dropped during cell DTX non-active periods.
[0078] Fig. 3 illustrates an example process of CSI-RS based measurement according to some embodiments of the present disclosure. The process 300 may involve a UE 301, and a gNB 302. For the purpose of discussion, the process 300 will be described with reference to Fig. 1A. Thus, the UE 301 in Fig. 3 may be an example of the terminal device 110 in Fig. 1A, the gNB 302 in Fig. 3 may be an example of the network device 120 or the network device 130 in Fig. 1A.
[0079] In the process 300, at 305, the gNB 302 configures the cell DTX settings and sends them to the UE 301. At 310, the gNB 302 transmits the CSI-RS configuration to the UE, and the CSI-RS configuration includes one or more threshold (s) for handling CSI-RS during cell non-active or inactive time. At 315, the cell DTX is activated, the UE 301 is aware that it may not receive the CSI-RS during non-active periods and the UE 301 has the capability to detect this situation.
[0080] In an example, at 320, the gNB 302 transmits CSI-RS and SSB to the UE 301. Correspondingly, the UE 301 monitors the periodic configured CSI-RS and SSB. At 325, the UE 301 performs evaluation of thresholds and the SS-RSRP measurement.
[0081] At 330 and 335, if the measured SS-RSRP is greater than threshold 1 or its variation is within the threshold 2, the UE estimates the CSI-RSRP based on the SS-RSRP variation and past CSI-RSRP during cell DTX inactive time. Additionally or alternatively, the other options comprised in the first operation as mentioned in Fig. 2 can be used.
[0082] In another example, at 340, the UE 301 monitors CSI-RS and SSB. At 345, the UE 301 performs evaluation of thresholds and the SS-RSRP measurement. At 350 and 355, if the measured SS-RSRP is less than threshold 1 or SS-RSRP variation exceeds the threshold 2, the UE falls back to SS-RSRP measurement. Additionally or alternatively, the other options comprised in second operation as mentioned in Fig. 2 can be used.
[0083] Fig. 4 illustrates an example process of CSI-RS based measurement according to some embodiments of the present disclosure. The process 400 may involve a UE 401, a gNB 402 and a ngNB 403. For the purpose of discussion, the process 400 will be described with reference to Fig. 1A. Thus, the UE 401 in Fig. 4 may be an example of the terminal device 110 in Fig. 1A, the gNB 402 in Fig. 4 may be an example of the network device 120 in Fig. 1A, and the ngNB 403 (hereinafter may also be referred to as neighbor gNB 403) in Fig. 4 may be an example of the network device 130 in Fig. 1A.
[0084] In the process 400, at 405, the gNB 402 configures the cell DTX settings and sends them to the UE 401. At 410, the gNB 402 transmits the CSI-RS configuration to the UE 401, and the CSI-RS configuration includes one or more threshold (s) for handling CSI-RS during cell inactive time. At 415, the cell DTX is activated, the UE 401 is aware that it may not receive the CSI-RS and the UE 401 has the capability to detect this situation.
[0085] In an example, at 420, the gNB 402 transmits CSI-RS and SSB to the UE 401. The neighbor gNB 403 transmits periodic CSI-RS to the UE during cell active time, no CSI-RS are transmitted during inactive time (unknown to the UE 401) . In addition, the SSB is still transmitted by the neighbor gNB 403 during the inactive time.
[0086] At 425 and 430, if the CSI-RS is not received by the UE 401, the UE 401 monitors the SSBs. At 435, the UE 401 evaluates the SS-RSRP and compares it against certain thresholds. At 440 and 445, if the measured SS-RSRP is greater than the thresholds or its variation is within a specific threshold range, the UE 401 may assume the non-active time of cell DTX, and follow the first operation to estimate the CSI-RSRP. The UE 401 may estimate the CSI-RSRP based on the variation of SS-RSRP and past CSI-RSRP measurements.
[0087] In another example, at 450, the UE 401 monitors the periodic configured CSI-RS and SSB. At 455, the UE 401 cannot detect CSI-RS. At 460, the UE 401 monitors CSI-RS and SSB. At 465, the UE 401 evaluates the SS-RSRP and compares it against certain thresholds. At 470 and 475, If either two or one SS-RSRP conditions are not fulfilled, the UE 401 assumes that the CSI-RS is transmitted but not received due to other radio problems and it falls back to legacy procedure for this case (e.g., beam sweeping) .
[0088] Fig. 5 illustrates an example flowchart of CSI-RS based measurement according to some embodiments of the present disclosure. the process 500 will be described from the perspective of the terminal device 110 with reference to Fig. 1A. The terminal device 110 is aware of the DTX configuration of the cell.
[0089] At block 505, the terminal device 110 measures SS-RSRP of the cell. At block 510, the terminal device 110 determines whether at least one of the following conditions is met: the SS-RSRP is greater than threshold 1 or a SS-RSRP variation within threshold 2.
