Description

[0001] Manufacturing device and method for cylindrical battery cells with blade cleaning

[0002] The present invention relates to a manufacturing device for cylindrical battery cells and a corresponding method for manufacturing such battery cells.

[0003] Battery cells are used in a wide variety of applications today. These applications are subject to increasingly stringent requirements, for example, with regard to the highest possible capacity, the most effective cooling, the greatest possible reliability and robustness, as well as particularly simple and cost-effective production. Various approaches already exist to meet these requirements, such as the use of specially optimized materials or similar. One problem that has emerged is that particles can be created during battery cell production, leading to contamination and thus ultimately compromising the reliability, robustness, and safety of the battery cells.During maintenance of a corresponding production facility where the production facility is shut down, accumulated particles can be removed, but this is complex and cannot completely prevent particle contamination during battery cell production between two such maintenance appointments.

[0004] Against this background, DE 102008 040 896 A1 describes a method for cutting and / or punching a material comprising a carrier and abrasive particles. The abrasive particles are located within and / or on at least part of the surface of the carrier. It is proposed therein to use a cutting or punching tool coated with or made of a ceramic material for cutting and / or punching the material.

[0005] As a further approach, WO 2019 / 145337 A1 describes a method for producing an electrode for a battery. In this process, a pore former for forming pores in the electrode and dirt particles and / or foreign particles are simultaneously removed from the electrode using a solvent. This is intended to avoid the potential dangers or disadvantages of such dirt and / or foreign particles without damaging the surface of the electrode, for example, by brushing.

[0006] However, these approaches are not always practical or may involve increased effort.

[0007] The object of the present invention is to enable a particularly efficient and cost-effective production of particularly reliable and safe cylindrical battery cells.

[0008] This problem is solved by the subject matter of the main claim and the subsidiary claim or the independent claims. Further possible embodiments of the invention are disclosed in the subclaims, the description, and the figures. Features, advantages, and possible embodiments presented in the description for one of the subject matter of the independent claims are to be regarded at least analogously as features, advantages, and possible embodiments of the respective subject matter of the other independent claims, as well as any possible combination of the subject matter of the independent claims, optionally in conjunction with one or more of the subclaims.

[0009] The manufacturing device according to the invention can be used in the production of cylindrical battery cells, each having an electrode coil. For this purpose, the manufacturing device according to the invention has a transport device for transporting or conveying an electrode foil web for the electrode coil. The electrode foil web can be provided, for example, as a roll or endless web of a substrate that is or will be covered or coated with an electrode material. The substrate can serve in the finished battery cell to collect and discharge electrons to an external or connection contact of the battery cell. For this purpose, the substrate can be designed as a conductor foil, for example as a copper foil or the like. For transporting the electrode foil web, the transport device can comprise, for example, a conveyor belt and / or one or more conveyor rollers or conveyor rollers or the like. This allows the electrode foil web to be transported and / or unrolled, for example, along its web or longitudinal direction. The provided electrode foil web can be longer or contain more material than required for a single battery cell.

[0010] Accordingly, the manufacturing device according to the invention also comprises a cutting device, by means of which a section for a battery cell or an electrode coil can be separated from the electrode track. For this purpose, the cutting device has a corresponding blade or cutting edge or the like.

[0011] During this separation or cutting of the electrode foil web, unwanted particles may be created, such as fragments, torn pieces, or flakes of the substrate or the like. These particles may adhere to the blade or settle on the blade and then, during a subsequent cut or separation from the blade, land on the electrode foil web, in particular its electrode material. This can ultimately lead to damage to a battery cell manufactured therewith, in particular to its electrodes or a separator or the like arranged therebetween. This could potentially cause a short circuit or overheating, or at least reduce the efficiency of the current flow in the respective battery cell. Such particles could also contaminate the electrode material. This, in turn, can change or influence its chemical composition, which can lead to reduced performance and potentially to accelerated degradation of the respective battery cell over time. The particles can also interfere with the battery cell formation during which the battery cell is charged and discharged in order to establish its capacity and performance characteristics. Any foreign particles present in or on the electrode material, in particular from the substrate, can disrupt the flow of electrons and thus lead to inconsistent performance and an overall reduced efficiency of the battery cell. In order to avoid or at least reduce these problems, the production device according to the invention also has an automatic cleaning device. This cleaning device is designed to clean the battery cell after a predetermined number of cycles carried out by means of the cutting device orThe blade is designed to automatically clean particles from the cutting direction within the production device and during ongoing operation of the cutting device after the cuts are made, i.e., separation processes for separating a corresponding number of sections of the electrode foil web. In other words, the cleaning device and the cutting device, or the production device as a whole, are configured or designed to clean particles from the blade without removing the blade or even the entire cutting device from the production device. The cleaning device is therefore an integral part of the production device. Furthermore, the cleaning process is a process or work or functional step of the production device that is integrated into the regular, automatic productive operation of the production device. The blade can therefore be cleaned automatically using the cleaning device, without, for example, shutting down the production device or putting it into a maintenance or cleaning mode other than continuous production operation, or similar. The cleaning device operates automatically, so the blade does not need to be cleaned manually.

[0012] The proposed integration and automation of the cleaning device can prevent or reduce particle contamination via the blade. This not only avoids the aforementioned problems, but can also make battery cell production more efficient, for example, faster and / or more cost-effective, and open up additional flexibility. The former is the case because downtimes of the production device for maintenance or cleaning purposes can be avoided or reduced, as there is typically sufficient time after a cut to clean the blade before the cutting device has to perform the next cut. Increased flexibility can be opened up, for example, for the selection or combination of materials for the blade and / or the electrode foil web.For example, when using a specific electrode foil sheet, the blade material does not necessarily need to be specifically adapted to prevent or minimize the formation or adhesion of particles due to the material properties alone. This can, for example, enable optimization with respect to other goals, such as the greatest possible robustness or durability and / or the lowest possible costs, or similar.

[0013] Depending on the requirements or application, the cleaning device or cleaning process can be designed in different ways, which will be explained in more detail elsewhere.

[0014] How often, i.e. after how many cuts the blade is cleaned or for which corresponding cleaning frequency the cleaning device is set up or adjusted, can be determined or predetermined, for example, depending on the respective requirements or circumstances in the individual case. For example, in one possible embodiment of the present invention, provision is made for the production device or the cleaning device to be set up to clean the blade after 1000 cuts at the latest, preferably after 100 cuts at the latest, particularly preferably after each cut or after each electrode winding cycle, i.e. after the cut or cuts that is or are necessary for a complete electrode winding. This opens up flexibility in order to adapt the mode of operation of the production device to the respective requirements in the individual case and can, in the process, reduce particle contamination orThe associated disadvantages or problems mentioned can be largely avoided. Today's manufacturing processes can often incorporate blade cleaning after each cut without significantly reducing the efficiency, i.e., the throughput, of the manufacturing device. This allows the battery cells to be manufactured with particularly small deviations or tolerances, ultimately demonstrating particularly consistent performance.

[0015] In a further possible embodiment of the present invention, the cleaning device comprises a wiping element and / or a stripping element or a slider. The cleaning device is designed here to guide this wiping and / or stripping element or this slider along the blade, i.e. in direct physical contact with the blade, in the longitudinal direction of the blade for cleaning the blade. For example, the wiping and / or stripping element or the slider can be moved along a guide or rail or the like running parallel to the blade. For this purpose, the cleaning device can also have a corresponding drive. A cleaning process, i.e. a one-time cleaning of the blade, can, for example, comprise a one-time movement of the wiping and / or stripping element or the slider along the length of the blade or an at least one back-and-forth movement of the wiping and / or stripping element or the slider. In the latter case, the wiping and / or scraping element or slider can be moved from a starting position once in a first direction along the blade and then immediately back in the opposite direction to the starting position. Which of these variants is selected for a given application can be selected or adjusted, for example, based on the intended cutting frequency—i.e., the time available between two cuts performed with the blade—and / or the degree of particle contamination of the blade. For example, moving the element repeatedly along the blade may take more time, but may allow for more thorough cleaning of the blade.

[0016] The wiping and / or peeling element or slider can be or comprise, for example, a cloth or textile and / or a sponge and / or a brush and / or a rubber lip and / or the like.

[0017] In addition, the cleaning device can, for example, comprise a reservoir and a dispensing device for a cleaning agent. The cleaning device can, for example, be configured to dispense or apply the cleaning agent directly onto the blade before the wiping and / or squeegee element or slider is guided along it. Likewise, the cleaning device can be configured to apply the cleaning agent to the wiping and / or squeegee element or slider and / or to saturate the wiping and / or squeegee element or slider with the cleaning agent before it is guided along the blade. This allows the blade to be cleaned even more thoroughly if necessary. In any case, particles can be removed from the blade particularly reliably due to the direct physical contact of the wiping and / or squeegee element or slider with the blade.

[0018] In a possible further development of the present invention, the cleaning device comprises a cleaning station for automatically cleaning the wiping and / or peeling element or the slider. This cleaning station can be arranged, in particular, in the longitudinal direction of the blade next to the cutting device. For example, the cleaning station can also be arranged next to the transport device or next to a transport or conveyor area in or through which the electrode foil web is transported during normal operation. The cleaning station can, for example, have a bath or basin that can be filled with water or a cleaning agent or the like and into which the wiping and / or peeling element can be immersed for cleaning.Depending on the design of the wiping and / or squeegee element, the cleaning station may also comprise a wiper or squeegee and / or a drum or spinning device and / or a device for squeezing or wringing out the wiping and / or squeegee element and / or a dryer and / or the like. Likewise, the cleaning station may be configured to change or replace the wiping and / or squeegee element there. For example, the wiping and / or squeegee element may be mounted on or in a movable cleaning head or arm or the like. This may then, for example, also be mounted so as to be movable relative to the cleaning station.

[0019] By cleaning the wiping and / or squeegee element as proposed here, particles picked up by the element during blade cleaning can be removed. This prevents particles from a previous cutting process or from a previous blade cleaning from being transferred via the wiping and / or squeegee element back to the blade and, through it, possibly to the electrode foil web. Thus, by using the cleaning station proposed here, a particularly good and consistent cleaning performance can be achieved when cleaning the blade. For example, the wiping and / or squeegee element can be cleaned in or using the cleaning station after each use or after each application to clean the blade.

[0020] Due to the proposed arrangement of the cleaning station next to the cutting device, the wiping and / or squeegee element or the corresponding cleaning head can reach the cleaning device after cleaning the blade, if necessary, without redirection or changing direction. This allows the wiping and / or squeegee element itself to be cleaned particularly easily, quickly, and efficiently between two uses for cleaning the blade. Furthermore, an existing design for a production device may then only require minimal adaptation in order to integrate the cleaning device provided according to the invention. The cleaning station can also be particularly easily accessible from the outside, for example, for replacing or refilling the cleaning agent or the like.

[0021] In a possible further development of the present invention, the cleaning device comprises a plurality of wiping and / or stripping elements. The cleaning device is then configured to switch to the next or a different one of the plurality of wiping and / or stripping elements for the next cleaning of the blade after a predetermined number of cleaning processes, i.e. cleanings of the blade, in particular after each cleaning of the blade. For this purpose, the plurality of wiping and / or regulating elements can be arranged on different sides of the cleaning head or arm mentioned elsewhere, for example. Likewise, the plurality of wiping and / or stripping elements can be arranged, for example, in a magazine or in or on a rotatable revolver mechanism or the like. The next or a different wiping or stripping element can then be directed towards the blade by appropriate rotation.Likewise, a supply or storage area for wiping and / or stripping elements can be provided or arranged, for example, next to the cutting device or next to the transport device. The movable cleaning head or arm can then be moved to this supply or storage area to change the wiping and / or stripping element, in order to pick up a new or different one of the multiple wiping and / or stripping elements. By changing the wiping and / or stripping element as proposed here, a permanently high cleaning performance for cleaning the blade can be automatically provided or maintained.

[0022] In a further possible embodiment of the present invention, the cleaning device comprises a nozzle or outlet opening for a cleaning air stream, which is aligned or can be aligned with the blade. Additionally or alternatively, the cleaning device here comprises a plasma cleaning head for plasma-based surface cleaning of the blade. The cleaning device is then configured to automatically activate the air stream or the plasma for cleaning or surface treatment of the blade when the blade is to be cleaned, and to deactivate it otherwise. In other words, intermittent operation according to a predetermined cleaning frequency and not continuous operation of the cleaning air stream and / or the plasma cleaning head is provided here. This not only saves energy, but also prevents or minimises any influence or impairment of the electrode foil by the cleaning air stream and / or the plasma.can be minimized. The cleaning air flow can enable contactless and therefore particularly gentle cleaning. Furthermore, through appropriate guidance or the use of a directed cleaning air flow, a controlled removal of the particles released from the blade in a specific direction or to a specific area can be achieved particularly reliably. This can prevent particle contamination of other devices or areas of the production facility. The plasma cleaning head, i.e. the use of a plasma to clean the blade, allows the blade to be cleaned particularly thoroughly, if necessary, without the use of a cleaning agent, solvent, or the like. This saves the time and effort required to remove or dry a cleaning agent or solvent from the blade, and also avoids the risk of damaging the electrode foil with a cleaning agent or solvent. For example, a carbon dioxide or oxygen plasma, or something similar, can be used to clean the blade.

[0023] In a further possible embodiment of the present invention, the cutting device is configured to move the blade from a rest position in the direction of the electrode foil web into a cutting position and then back to the rest position in order to sever the sections from the electrode foil web. The cleaning device is then configured to clean the blade - at least or only and precisely - in the blade's rest position. For this purpose, the cleaning device can, for example, comprise the cleaning head mentioned elsewhere, which can then be moved towards the blade or along it to clean the blade when the blade is in the rest position. If the blade is not being cleaned, however, the cleaning head can, for example, be parked next to the blade or next to an area provided for the electrode foil web.The cleaning head may, for example, be or comprise the wiping and / or stripping element mentioned elsewhere and / or the nozzle mentioned elsewhere and / or the plasma cleaning head mentioned elsewhere.

[0024] The proposed cleaning of the blade in its rest position can, on the one hand, prevent the cleaning of the blade from interfering with the electrode foil web or its transport. On the other hand, the rest position can be a position that the blade is already temporarily assumed in during ongoing productive operation of the production device, for example in conventional production devices or without intended cleaning of the blade, or independently of the cleaning of the blade. Thus, in this case, there is no need to move or adjust the blade to a separate cleaning position in order to clean it. This saves the time required for such a movement of the blade and, on the other hand, allows the cleaning device to be integrated into existing designs for production devices particularly easily and with little effort.

[0025] In an alternative possible embodiment of the present invention, the cutting device is configured to move the blade from a rest position or the one specified elsewhere in the direction of the electrode foil web into a cutting position or the one specified elsewhere, and then back to the rest position in order to separate the sections from the electrode foil web. Furthermore, the cutting device is configured to move the blade into a cleaning position different from the rest position and the cutting position in order to clean the blade. The cleaning device is then configured to clean the blade, at least or only and precisely, in this cleaning position. Such a cleaning position can, for example, offer more free space in the area of the blade than the rest position or the cutting position, so that the blade can be cleaned more easily and / or more effectively in the cleaning position.Likewise, the cleaning of the blade in the special cleaning position proposed here can, for example, prevent particles and / or cleaning material released from the blade during cleaning, for example a cleaning agent and / or solvent or particles of the wiping and / or stripping element mentioned elsewhere or particles of the cleaning plasma mentioned elsewhere or the like, from reaching the section that has just been severed or the area of the electrode foil web to be severed next or onto the transport device or the like. This can particularly effectively prevent corresponding contamination of the electrode foil. For this purpose, the blade can, for example, be moved from the rest position in its longitudinal direction, for example transversely to the web or longitudinal direction of the electrode foil, into the cleaning position. In a further possible embodiment of the present invention, the production device is designed to cut a first electrode foil web for an anode and a second electrode foil web for a cathode of the respective battery cell separately from one another. This can be done, for example, using the same blade or different blades or using the same cutting device or different cutting devices. Furthermore, the production device is designed to combine the corresponding sections to form the respective electrode coil only after the two electrode foil webs have been cut separately, for example by placing them on top of one another or winding them up together. Since this means that during a cut orBy cutting only one of the electrode foil strips at a time during the separation process, the quantity and / or type of particles adhering to or remaining on the blade per cut can be limited. This can facilitate easier cleaning of the blade and potentially prevent cross-contamination of the electrode foils with particles from the other electrode foil.

[0026] The present invention also relates to a method for manufacturing cylindrical battery cells, in particular by means of the manufacturing device according to the invention. In the method according to the invention, an electrode foil web is conveyed or transported to a cutting device by means of a conveyor or transport device. Sections for one battery cell or one electrode coil each are severed from the electrode foil web by means of a blade of the cutting device. After a predetermined number of sections have been severed from the electrode foil web, the blade is then automatically cleaned of particles created during the separation by means of a cleaning device. The severed sections are each rolled or wound up to form an electrode coil for a battery cell. The method according to the invention can, for example, be an operating method for operating the manufacturing device according to the invention.Further processes or measures mentioned in connection with the manufacturing device according to the invention can constitute further, optionally optional, process steps of the method according to the invention. These can, for example, relate to changing and / or cleaning the wiping and / or stripping element used to clean the blade, activating and deactivating the cleaning air flow and / or the plasma cleaning head, moving the blade into the cleaning position, and / or the like. Further features of the invention can be derived from the claims, the figures, and the description of the figures. The features and combinations of features mentioned above in the description as well as the features and combinations of features shown below in the description of the figures and / or in the figures alone can be used not only in the respective combination specified, but also in other combinations or on their own, without departing from the scope of the invention.

[0027] The drawing shows:

[0028] Fig. 1 is a partial schematic representation of a manufacturing device for cylindrical battery cells; and

[0029] Fig. 2 shows an exemplary part of a flow chart for a method for manufacturing the battery cells.

[0030] Fig. 1 shows a partial schematic representation of a manufacturing device 1 for producing cylindrical battery cells or for a manufacturing step of a corresponding battery cell production. The manufacturing device 1 comprises a support structure 2, to which further components can be held or fastened. The manufacturing device 1 further comprises a transport device 3, which is indicated here by way of example in the form of several rollers or cylinders. By means of this transport device 3, an electrode foil web 4, also indicated here, can be transported. Electrode coils for the battery cells can ultimately be produced from this electrode foil web 4. The electrode foil web 4 provided on the input side or as starting material can be sufficient for a large number of individual battery cells.

[0031] Accordingly, the production device 1 here also comprises a cutting device with a blade 5 for cutting the electrode foil web 4. By means of the blade 5, a section 6 for each battery cell can be severed from the electrode foil web 4. The severed section 6 can then be transported away from the cutting device or the blade 5 by means of the transport device 3. Likewise, a remaining part of the electrode foil web 4 can be transported into a cutting position by means of the transport device 3, so that the next section 6 can then be severed from it by means of the blade 5.

[0032] The blade 5 may be susceptible to the deposition or accumulation of particles generated during the cutting of the electrode foil web 4. These particles may, for example, be copper particles from a copper foil serving as a substrate or conductor foil of the electrode foil web 4, or the like. During subsequent cutting, these particles could then be transferred from the blade 5 to the electrode foil web 4. Particles deposited there could cause damage or impairment, or lead to the undesirable formation of dendrites or the like.

[0033] To counteract this problem, the production device 1 here also comprises a cleaning device 7. This cleaning device 7 can be guided along the blade 5 in a cleaning movement indicated schematically here, for example for mechanical or chemical or physical or plasma-based cleaning of the blade 5. The blade 5 can thus be cleaned of particles after each cut or after a predetermined number of cuts. Depending on the requirements or design, a cutting edge of the blade 5 and / or one or both side surfaces of the blade 5 can be cleaned by means of the cleaning device 7.

[0034] During cleaning of the blade 5, particles can accumulate over time on or in the cleaning device 7. In order to prevent these particles from being transferred from the cleaning device 7 back to the blade 5 during a later cleaning process, the production device 1 also has a service device 9. The cleaning device 7 can, for example, be moved to the service device 9 or into the service device 9 after a predetermined number of cleaning processes in a service movement 10 indicated here. There, for example, the cleaning device 7 can itself be cleaned. Likewise, a supply of cleaning elements, for example wiping and / or scraping elements or the like, can be kept there. The cleaning device 7 can then be moved to the service device 9 in order to change the corresponding cleaning element there. For further explanation, Fig.2 shows an exemplary schematic flow chart 11 for part of a method for manufacturing cylindrical battery cells. In a method step S1, the electrode foil web 4 is provided or threaded into the transport device 3 and transported to a first cutting position. In a method step S2, the current section 6 is then severed from the electrode foil web 4 using the blade 5.

[0035] In a method step S3, the respective separated section 6 is then transported by means of the transport device 3 to a winding station (not shown here) for winding the section 6 into an electrode coil.

[0036] During this time, the blade 5 can, for example, be parked in a rest position or moved into a cleaning position. For example, parallel to method step S3, in a method step S4, the blade 5 can then be cleaned of any embedded particles by means of the cleaning device 7 and, if necessary, moved back to the rest position.

[0037] These process steps can then be repeated multiple times for the series or mass production of battery cells. Process step S4, i.e., cleaning the blade 5, can, for example, extend into the subsequent process step S1. Likewise, the further transport of the most recently severed section 6 and the transport of the next section of the electrode foil web 4 for the next section 6 to be severed into a corresponding cutting position under the blade 5 can take place at least substantially simultaneously or at least partially overlapping in time.

[0038] Overall, the described examples show how a cleaning system or cleaning unit for foil cutting can be implemented and used for the production of cylindrical battery cells. Reference numerals 1 Production device
