Abstract

This lighting device has: a liquid crystal light control element in which a plurality of liquid crystal panels are laminated; and a housing which has housed therein a light source, has a light emission port, and has an external appearance with which it is possible to identify a reference direction. Each of the plurality of liquid crystal panels has: a first substrate; a second substrate which is opposite to the first substrate; a liquid crystal layer which is between the first substrate and the second substrate; a first strip electrode extending in a first direction and a second strip electrode disposed parallel to the first strip electrode, both electrodes being provided on the first substrate; and a third strip electrode extending in a second direction intersecting with the first direction and a fourth strip electrode adjacent to the third strip electrode, both electrodes being provided on the second substrate. When the liquid crystal light control element is disposed overlapping the light emission port and is arranged such that the reference direction provided to the housing is oriented along the wall surface, at least one liquid crystal panel among the plurality of liquid crystal panels is set such that the normal direction of the wall surface intersects with the direction in which the first strip electrode and the second strip electrode extend, and with the direction in which the third and fourth strip electrodes extend.
