Abstract
Description
Battery cell pressurization device and battery cell manufacturing system including the same
[0001] This application claims priority from Korean Patent Application No. 10-2023-0116506, filed September 1, 2023, the entire disclosure of which is incorporated herein by reference.
[0002] The present invention relates to a battery cell pressurizing device and a battery cell manufacturing system including the same, and more particularly, to a battery cell pressurizing device used to pressurize assembled battery cells in a battery cell manufacturing process, and a battery cell manufacturing system including the battery cell pressurizing device.
[0003] Generally, secondary batteries refer to batteries that can be repeatedly charged and discharged, such as lithium-ion batteries, lithium polymer batteries, nickel-cadmium batteries, nickel-metal hydride batteries, and nickel-zinc batteries. The most basic secondary battery, a battery cell, can provide an output voltage of approximately 2.5 V to 4.2 V.
[0004] These battery cells are assembled by stacking an electrode assembly, formed by stacking positive and negative electrodes with a separator between them, and then housing the assembly together with an electrolyte material in a case, which is then sealed. These assembled battery cells undergo a pressurization process, where they are pressurized to a predetermined pressure during the activation or testing phase. To increase process efficiency, this pressurization process involves simultaneously pressurizing several to several dozen battery cells, which can lead to pressure variations among the battery cells.
[0005] Therefore, in the pressurization process, a technology is required that monitors the pressure applied to battery cells in real time and can quickly respond when a pressure difference occurs between battery cells.
[0006] However, the existing technology of measuring the pressure of a pressurized device using a separate pressure reducing device or pressure measuring device requires installing a pressure reducing device or pressure measuring device on the pressurized device before the pressurization process, measuring the pressurizing force of the pressurized device, and then removing the installed pressure reducing device or pressure measuring device. Therefore, the pressurization process requires a lot of time and cost, and there is a problem in that the pressure applied to battery cells cannot be monitored in real time.
[0007] In addition, as disclosed in Korean Patent Publication No. 10-2022-0101269, since the existing technology measures the overall pressure applied to battery cells using a load cell installed in a pressurizing device, it cannot detect pressure deviations occurring between battery cells or pressure deviations occurring between different parts of a specific battery cell, and as a result, there is a problem in that the uniformity of the quality of manufactured battery cells cannot be guaranteed and the defect rate cannot be reduced.
[0008] The technical problem to be solved by the present invention is to provide a battery cell pressurizing device capable of monitoring the pressure applied to battery cells in real time while reducing the time and cost of the pressurizing process for pressurizing battery cells, and a battery cell manufacturing system including the same.
[0009] Another technical problem to be solved by the present invention is to provide a battery cell pressurizing device and a battery cell manufacturing system including the same, which can detect pressure deviations between battery cells or pressure deviations between different parts of a specific battery cell that occur in the pressurizing process, thereby ensuring uniformity in the quality of manufactured battery cells and reducing the defect rate.
[0010] A battery cell pressurizing device according to one aspect of the present invention comprises: a plurality of mounting stands configured to mount at least one battery cell each and arranged side by side in one direction; a pressurizing unit configured to pressurize battery cells mounted on the plurality of mounting stands by pressing the plurality of mounting stands in a direction in which the plurality of mounting stands are in close contact with each other; and a plurality of pressure sensors distributed across the plurality of mounting stands and configured to detect pressure applied to battery cells mounted on each mounting stand separately for each battery cell or separately for detecting different parts of each battery cell.
[0011] In one embodiment, each of the mounting brackets may have a mounting groove into which a battery cell is mounted.
[0012] In one embodiment, each pressure sensor of the plurality of pressure sensors may be placed inside a mounting groove of a corresponding mounting bracket among the plurality of mounting brackets.
[0013] In one embodiment, each of the pressure sensors may be positioned between the inner surface of the mounting groove and the battery cell mounted in the mounting groove, and may have a strap shape extending along the inner surface of the mounting groove.
[0014] In one embodiment, the battery cell pressurizing device may further include a buffer pad disposed between the inner surface of the mounting groove and the battery cell mounted in the mounting groove to relieve pressure applied to the mounted battery cell.
[0015] In one embodiment, the plurality of pressure sensors may include pressure sensors arranged together on the same mounting base, and the pressure sensors arranged together on the same mounting base may be configured to detect pressure applied to different portions of a battery cell mounted on the same mounting base.
[0016] In one embodiment, the plurality of mounting units may include a first mounting unit and a second mounting unit that are arranged adjacent to each other, and the first mounting unit may include a mounting portion on which a first battery cell is mounted; and a pressing unit configured to pressurize a second battery cell mounted on the second mounting unit by the pressing force of the pressing unit.
[0017] In one embodiment, the device may further include a stopper interposed between adjacent mounts among the plurality of mounts to limit a gap between the adjacent mounts.
[0018] In one embodiment, the stopper may have a plate structure and may have a through hole in the center of the plate structure in which a battery cell mounted on one of the adjacent mounting brackets is positioned.
[0019] In one embodiment, the battery cell pressurization device may further include a control unit configured to detect an abnormal battery cell among the battery cells to which a pressure that does not satisfy a predetermined pressure condition is applied using detection results of the plurality of pressure sensors.
[0020] In one embodiment, the control unit may stop the operation of the pressurizing unit when the abnormal battery cell is detected.
[0021] In one embodiment, the battery cell pressurizing device may further include an output unit that outputs identification information identifying a mounting unit on which the abnormal battery cell is mounted among the plurality of mounting units when the abnormal battery cell is detected by the control unit.
[0022] A battery cell manufacturing system according to another aspect of the present invention includes a battery cell pressurizing device according to any one of the above-described embodiments.
[0023] According to the present invention, a plurality of pressure sensors are distributed and arranged on a plurality of mounting platforms each configured to mount at least one battery cell, thereby detecting in real time the pressure applied to the battery cells mounted on each mounting platform, thereby reducing the time and cost of the pressurizing process for pressurizing the battery cells, while enabling real-time monitoring of the pressure applied to the battery cells.
[0024] In addition, the pressure sensors arranged together on the same mount among the plurality of mounts can detect pressure applied to different parts of the battery cells mounted on the same mount, thereby detecting pressure deviations between battery cells as well as pressure deviations between different parts of a specific battery cell, thereby ensuring uniformity in the quality of manufactured battery cells and reducing the defect rate.
[0025] In addition, the control unit uses the detection results of the plurality of pressure sensors to detect abnormal battery cells that are pressurized by the pressurization unit and to which pressure does not meet a predetermined pressure condition, thereby enabling a quick response when an abnormal battery cell occurs.

Furthermore, the terms used in this specification are defined in consideration of their functions in the present invention, and these may vary depending on the intentions or practices of designers, manufacturers, etc. Therefore, the definitions of terms described below should be based on the contents throughout this specification.
[0037] FIG. 1 illustrates a battery cell pressurization device (100) according to one embodiment of the present invention.
[0038] As illustrated in FIG. 1, a battery cell pressurizing device (100) according to one embodiment of the present invention includes a mounting base (110) and a pressurizing unit (120).
[0039] The above-mentioned mounting bracket (110) is configured to mount at least one battery cell. The battery cell pressurizing device (100) includes a plurality of such mounting brackets (110). These plurality of mounting brackets (110) are arranged side by side in one direction.
[0040] The above pressurizing unit (120) is configured to pressurize battery cells mounted on a plurality of mounting stands (110) by pressing the plurality of mounting stands (110) in a direction in which they are in close contact with each other.
[0041] As will be described further below, the battery cell pressurization device (100) further includes a plurality of pressure sensors. These plurality of pressure sensors are distributed across a plurality of mounting brackets (110) and configured to detect the pressure applied to the battery cells mounted on each mounting bracket (110) separately for each battery cell or separately for each different part of each battery cell.
[0042] For example, when battery cells are mounted on a plurality of mounting stands (110), the pressurizing unit (120) can pressurize the battery cells by pressing the plurality of mounting stands (110) so that they are in close contact with each other. To this end, the pressurizing unit (120) may include a motor (122) that generates a driving force, first and second pressurizing plates (124, 126) that move by the driving force of the motor (122) to pressurize the mounting stands, and a guide shaft (128) that guides the first and second pressurizing plates (124, 126) to pressurize the plurality of mounting stands (110).
[0043] In one embodiment, the first pressure plate (124, 126) of the pressure unit (120) may be configured to move by the driving force of the motor (122), while the second pressure plate (126) may be configured to be fixed at a predetermined position.
[0044] Additionally, in one embodiment, the battery cell pressurizing device (100) may include a control unit (130). In this case, the control unit (130) may be configured to control the overall operation of the battery cell pressurizing device (100).
[0045] In particular, the control unit (130) is configured to detect an abnormal battery cell that is subjected to a pressure that does not satisfy a predetermined pressure condition among the battery cells mounted on the plurality of mounting units (110) by using the detection results of the pressure sensors distributed across the plurality of mounting units (110). For example, the pressure condition may include a first condition that the pressure applied to each battery cell must fall within a first pressure range that is predetermined, and a second condition that the pressure applied to different parts of each battery cell must fall within a second pressure range that is predetermined.
[0046] Additionally, the control unit (130) can stop the operation of the pressurization unit (120) when an abnormal battery cell is detected to have pressure applied that does not satisfy the pressure condition.
[0047] This control unit (130) may include a general-purpose processor or an ASIC (application-specific integrated circuit) for executing the control logic as described above, and may optionally further include various hardware such as registers and memories. This control unit (130) may be implemented by a combination of hardware and software. That is, the control logic of the control unit (130) is configured as a computer program and stored in the control unit's (130) own memory or an external memory (not shown), and the stored computer program may be executed through the hardware of the control unit (130).
[0048] In one embodiment, the battery cell pressurization device (100) may include an output unit (140). In this case, the output unit (140) may be configured to output identification information identifying a mounting unit (110) on which the abnormal battery cell is mounted among the plurality of mounting units (110) when the abnormal battery cell is detected by the control unit (130). In this case, the identification information may be output as a visual signal, an auditory signal, or an audio-visual signal. According to an embodiment, the output unit (140) may be configured to output the identification information together with a predetermined alarm signal.
[0049] This output unit (230) may optionally include a visual output device such as a monitor, a display panel, a touch screen, or a light-emitting diode. In addition, the output unit (230) may include an audio device such as a speaker.
[0050] In this way, the control unit (130) uses the detection results of the pressure sensors to detect abnormal battery cells that are subjected to pressure that does not meet predetermined pressure conditions, and outputs identification information identifying the mounting bracket on which the abnormal battery cells are mounted through the output unit (140), thereby enabling a quick response when abnormal battery cells occur and reducing the defect rate of the manufactured battery cells.
[0051] Figure 2 shows an example of a battery cell (20).
[0052] As illustrated in FIG. 2, a battery cell (20) may include an electrode assembly (22) in which a positive electrode and a negative electrode are mutually laminated with a separator therebetween, and a case (28) that accommodates the electrode assembly (22) together with an electrolyte material in an internal space (S1).
[0053] In addition, the battery cell (20) may further include an electrode lead (24) electrically connected to the electrode assembly (22), and a sealing tape (26) sealing the circumference of the electrode lead (24).
[0054] The case (28) of the battery cell (20) may include a first case portion (28a) and a second case portion (28b) that are mutually coupled to form an internal space (S1). The case (28) may be sealed by hermetically coupling the edge portion of the first case portion (28a) and the edge portion of the second case portion (28b) to each other while the electrode assembly (22) is accommodated in the internal space (S1).
[0055] The battery cell (20) assembled in this manner goes through a pressurizing process of pressurizing the battery cell (20) at a predetermined pressure in order to impregnate the electrolyte material contained in the battery cell (20) into the electrode assembly (22).
[0056] In addition, the assembled battery cell (20) goes through a short-circuit test process in which the battery cell (20) is pressurized through an HPCD (High Pressure Current Detection) device and the current of the battery cell (20) is inspected.
[0057] The battery cell pressurization device (100) according to the present invention can increase the manufacturing efficiency of battery cells and reduce manufacturing costs by enabling the pressurization process and short-circuit test process described above to be performed in an integrated manner.
[0058] FIG. 3 illustrates mounting brackets of a battery cell pressurizing device according to one embodiment of the present invention.
[0059] As illustrated in FIG. 3, the battery cell pressurizing device (100) may include mounting brackets arranged adjacent to each other.
[0060] Each mounting bracket (110) may be configured to mount at least one battery cell (20). In addition, the mounting brackets mounted with battery cells (20) may be stacked in one direction (X-axis direction) and arranged side by side.
[0061] The pressurizing unit (120) of the battery cell pressurizing device (100) described above can pressurize the mounting brackets in a direction in which they are in close contact with each other by using pressurizing plates (124, 126) arranged at both ends of the mounting brackets. In this way, by pressing the mounting brackets in a direction in which they are in close contact with each other, the battery cells mounted on the mounting brackets can be pressurized.
[0062] FIG. 4 illustrates a mounting stand (110) and a pressure sensor (150) of a battery cell pressurization device according to one embodiment of the present invention.
[0063] As shown in Fig. 4, the mounting base (110) has an overall plate shape and may be provided with a mounting groove (112) in which a battery cell is mounted.
[0064] For example, the mounting member (110) may include a mounting portion (P1) in which a mounting groove (112) is provided and a first battery cell is mounted, and a pressing portion (P2) configured to pressurize a second battery cell mounted on the other mounting member by the pressing force of the pressing unit (120).
[0065] The above pressure sensor (150) may be placed inside the mounting groove (112) of the corresponding mounting base (110). In this case, the pressure sensor (150) may be placed between the inner surface of the mounting groove (112) and the battery cell mounted in the corresponding mounting groove (112).
[0066] In one embodiment, the pressure sensor (150) may have a strap shape extending along the inner surface of the mounting groove (112) so as to detect the pressure applied to the entire battery cell. In this case, the mounting base (110) may have a connection groove (114) that provides a connection passage between the pressure sensor (150) and a control unit (130) or another device positioned on the outside of the mounting base (110). That is, one end of the pressure sensor (150) may extend through the connection groove (114) of the mounting base (110) and be connected to the control unit (130) or another device.
[0067] In one embodiment, the pressure sensor (150) may be configured to detect pressure applied to different parts of a battery cell by distinguishing them according to the parts of the battery cell. To this end, the pressure sensor (150) may include pressure sensors (150A, 150B) that are arranged together on the same mounting stand (110). In this case, the pressure sensors (150A, 150B) that are arranged together on the same mounting stand (110) may be configured to detect pressure applied to different parts of the battery cell mounted on the mounting stand (110).
[0068] In Fig. 5, part E1 of Fig. 4 is shown in an enlarged view.
[0069] As illustrated in FIG. 5, the pressure sensor (150) of the battery cell pressurization device (100) according to one embodiment of the present invention may be configured to have a resistance value that changes depending on the pressure applied to the pressure sensor (150). In this case, the pressure sensor (150) may include an insulating film-type substrate (152), conductive patterns (154a, 154b) formed at intervals from each other on the substrate (152), and terminals (156a, 156b) for electrical connection of the conductive patterns (154a, 154b).
[0070] In another embodiment, the pressure sensor (150) may be configured to change a voltage value or a current value depending on the pressure applied to the pressure sensor (150). In this case, the pressure sensor (150) may include an insulating film-type substrate, piezoelectric elements arranged on the substrate, and terminals for electrical connection of the piezoelectric elements.
[0071] FIG. 6 illustrates a buffer pad (160) of a battery cell pressurization device according to one embodiment of the present invention.
[0072] As illustrated in FIG. 6, a battery cell pressurizing device (100) according to an embodiment of the present invention may include a buffer pad (160). In this case, the buffer pad (160) may be inserted into a mounting groove (112) of a mounting member (110) and placed inside the mounting groove (112). That is, the buffer pad (160) may be placed between an inner surface of the mounting groove (112) and a battery cell mounted in the mounting groove (112), and configured to relieve pressure applied to the mounted battery cell. In this case, the pressure sensor (150) may be placed between the inner surface of the mounting groove (112) and the buffer pad (160).
[0073] In one embodiment, the buffer pad (160) may include a main body (162) that is disposed inside the mounting groove (112) to support the battery cell (20), and an extension portion (164) that extends from the main body (162) and is disposed inside the connection groove (114) of the mounting stand (110) described above. In this case, the extension portion (164) may be configured to cover one end of the pressure sensor (150) that is disposed inside the connection groove (114).
[0074] In addition, the buffer pad (160) may further include a support portion (166). The support portion (166) may be configured to protrude toward the battery cell (20) from one surface of the main body (162) facing the battery cell (20) so as to support the battery cell (20). This support portion (166) may be provided at a position corresponding to the pressure sensor (150), so as to enable the pressure sensor (150) to easily detect the pressure applied to the battery cell (20).
[0075] Such a buffer pad (160) may be composed of a material having a predetermined elasticity. For example, the buffer pad (160) may be composed of a material including a polymer resin such as urethane.
[0076] FIG. 7 illustrates a stopper (170) of a battery cell pressurizing device according to one embodiment of the present invention.
[0077] As illustrated in FIG. 7, a battery cell pressurizing device (100) according to one embodiment of the present invention may include a stopper (170). In this case, the stopper (170) is interposed between adjacent mounting stands (110A, 110B) among a plurality of mounting stands of the battery cell pressurizing device (100), and is configured to limit the gap between the adjacent mounting stands (110A, 110B).
[0078] In one embodiment, the stopper (170) may have a plate structure and may have a through hole (172) in the center of the plate structure in which a battery cell (20) mounted on one of the adjacent mounting stands (110A, 110B) is positioned.
[0079] According to the present invention, when the thickness of the battery cells to be pressed is changed, the pressure applied to the battery cells to be pressed can be appropriately adjusted by changing the thickness or number of stoppers (170) placed between the mounting brackets.
[0080] FIG. 8 is a flowchart illustrating an abnormal battery cell detection process of a battery cell pressurization device according to one embodiment of the present invention.
[0081] As illustrated in FIG. 8, when the assembled battery cells are each mounted on the plurality of mounting stands (110) described above, the pressurizing unit (120) of the battery cell pressurizing device (100) pressurizes the plurality of mounting stands (110) in a direction in which they are in close contact with each other, thereby pressurizing the battery cells mounted on the plurality of mounting stands (110) for a predetermined reference time (S810).
[0082] While the battery cells are pressurized, a plurality of pressure sensors (150) distributed across a plurality of mounting stands (110) detect the pressure applied to the battery cells mounted on each mounting stand (110) separately for each battery cell, or separately for each different part of each battery cell (S820).
[0083] Then, the control unit (130) of the battery cell pressurization device (100) uses the detection results of the pressure sensors to detect an abnormal battery cell among the battery cells mounted on a plurality of mounting stands (110) to which a pressure that does not meet a predetermined pressure condition is applied (S830).
[0084] For example, the control unit (130) can detect a battery cell whose applied pressure is outside a predetermined first pressure range among the pressurized battery cells, or a battery cell whose overall pressure is applied unevenly, as an abnormal battery cell.
[0085] When an abnormal battery cell is detected in this way, the control unit (130) can control the pressurizing unit (120) to stop the operation of the pressurizing unit (120) (S840).
[0086] Additionally, the control unit (130) can control the output unit (140) to output identification information identifying the mounting bracket equipped with the abnormal battery cell as a visual signal, an auditory signal, or an audio-visual signal (S850). In this case, the output unit (140) can output the identification information together with a predetermined alarm signal.
[0087] On the other hand, if no abnormal battery cell is detected among the pressurized battery cells, the control unit (130) can repeat the above-described processes (S820, S830) for a predetermined reference time (S832).
[0088] FIG. 9 is a block diagram illustrating a battery cell manufacturing system (10) according to one embodiment of the present invention.
[0089] As illustrated in FIG. 9, a battery cell manufacturing system (10) according to one embodiment of the present invention includes a battery cell pressurizing device (100) according to the present invention. Depending on the embodiment, the battery cell manufacturing system (10) may further include a current inspection device (200) and / or a charging / discharging device (300).
[0090] The above current inspection device (200) can be configured to inspect the current of the assembled battery cells while they are being pressurized by the battery cell pressurization device (100) according to the present invention, thereby detecting defective battery cells among the battery cells.
[0091] The above charging and discharging device (300) may be configured to activate the assembled battery cells by repeatedly charging and discharging them while the assembled battery cells are pressurized by the battery cell pressurizing device (100) according to the present invention.
[0092] In this way, the battery cell manufacturing system (10) according to the present invention can increase the manufacturing efficiency of battery cells and reduce manufacturing costs by comprehensively performing a short-circuit test process and an activation process for assembled battery cells.
[0093] As described above, according to the present invention, a plurality of pressure sensors are distributed and arranged on a plurality of mounting stands configured to mount at least one battery cell each, thereby detecting in real time the pressure applied to the battery cells mounted on each mounting stand, thereby reducing the time and cost of the pressurizing process for pressurizing the battery cells, while enabling real-time monitoring of the pressure applied to the battery cells.
[0094] In addition, the pressure sensors arranged together on the same mount among the plurality of mounts can detect pressure applied to different parts of the battery cells mounted on the same mount, thereby detecting pressure deviations between battery cells as well as pressure deviations between different parts of a specific battery cell, thereby ensuring uniformity in the quality of manufactured battery cells and reducing the defect rate.
[0095] In addition, the control unit uses the detection results of the plurality of pressure sensors to detect abnormal battery cells that are pressurized by the pressurization unit and to which pressure does not meet a predetermined pressure condition, thereby enabling a quick response when an abnormal battery cell occurs.
[0096] Furthermore, it goes without saying that embodiments according to the present invention can solve various technical problems other than those mentioned in the present specification, not only in the relevant technical field but also in related technical fields.
[0097] The present invention has been described with reference to specific embodiments. However, those skilled in the art will clearly understand that various modifications can be implemented within the technical scope of the present invention. Therefore, the embodiments disclosed above should be considered illustrative rather than limiting. In other words, the true scope of the present invention is set forth in the claims, and all differences within the scope equivalent thereto should be construed as being encompassed by the present invention.
