Description

[0001] Modular Contained Combustion Cartridge and Integrated Ignition System Field [1] The present inventions relate to the field of smoking, vaping and Thermal Extraction Devices. The present inventions more specifically relate to the field of prefilled or refillable cartridges for smoking or thermal extraction of biomass. Background [2] Smoking as we know it has been utilized by nearly all cultures for a range of purposes since long before recorded history. It is a simple and straightforward process and is one of the most effective fast acting routes of administration for a broad range of active compounds. [3] To smoke, a person simply initiates combustion of the plant matter or other material to be administered, and deliberately inhales the byproducts resultant of the incomplete combustion. Most methods for smoking use either a consumable paper or wrapper which is also burned in the consumption process, or some sort of generally non- combustible or combustion resistant implement such as a pipe to smoke the material of choice. [4] These methods all have several drawbacks including the additional pollution of the smoke from the wrapper, which generally contains nothing desirable. [5] Reusable implements also have many of their own drawbacks as they get dirty quickly and need to be cleaned frequently, and additionally require preparation and handling of the plant matter to prepare and load, as well as further effort to scrape out the unburned residue. [6] The Modular Contained Combustion Cartridge and Integrated Ignition System is a novel hybrid device refining and evolving the art of smoking by incorporating simplified modern technology to address many of the shortcomings inherent with the traditional methodology of combustion powered smoking. Summary [7] Accordingly, a Modular Contained Combustion Cartridge and Integrated Ignition System provides an elegant solution to the current drawbacks for many of the other methods and implements traditionally used for smoking. [8] The Modular Contained Combustion Cartridge and Integrated Ignition System also addresses many of the undesirable attributes of traditional smoking methods. With the incorporation of a Modular Contained Combustion Cartridge, it is now possible to purchase pre-filled and or fill your own reusable, recyclable and or disposable Combustion Cartridges. [9] These Cartridges provide many additional advantages over papers and wrappers as well as other traditional smoking implements.

[0010] These include but are not limited to, completely containing the combustion within a noncombustible or combustion resistant cartridge, preservation of the unsmoked smoking material as combustion self-extinguishes quickly after the draw is completed and prevention of unintended fires from errant sparks and embers.

[0011] This contained combustion cartridge configuration substantially reduces the likelihood of an errant spark escaping the smoking device compared to almost all other smoking methods and subsequently causing a problem such as an unintended fire.

[0012] Also, due to the nature of design and construction, the cartridge promotes the contained material to self-extinguish in a very short period of time, for example, approximately 2 seconds or less.

[0013] This results in a significant conservation of the remaining smoking materials and reduces unwanted smoke as well as localized air pollution.

[0014] This system eliminates the need for papers or other types of combustible wrappers and yet empowers the user with the ability or option to use and enjoy a clean implement each time they choose to smoke.

[0015] With the compatible Integrated Ignition System, it becomes even easier to have a quick smoke, as all that is needed to take a puff, is to simply activate the ignition and inhale. This process will feel familiar and intuitive as it is analogous to using a common vape pen or cart. No lighter needed.

[0016] An important benefit of this type of device is the contained combustible material self-extinguishes within seconds subsequent to the user terminating suction or draw due to lack of sufficient oxygen. The result of this type of function is preservation as very little material is consumed through the ongoing and generally undesirable ongoing combustion process or smoldering when the device or product is not in active use producing inhalable compounds. This preserves the material for consumption or utilization at any point in time when the operator desires.

[0017] The utility of the heat resistant cartridge design also provides an option for an alternative or analog to smoking. As the cartridge is heat resistant, coupling the cartridge to various lower intensity heat sources in lieu of various higher intensity sources intended for ignition enables the contents of the cartridge to be thermally extracted instead of combusted. [0032] Referring to the Figures, more detailed descriptions of The Modular Contained Combustion Cartridge and Integrated Ignition System 100 are provided.

[0033] The Modular Contained Combustion Cartridge and Ignition System 100 is comprised of a non-combustible and or combustion resistant capsule 20 to contain the smoking materials 420, a mouthpiece piston 10 and a mating ignition system 30. In some examples, a mouthpiece may be provided which is separable or has one or more separable components such as filters, cooling components or flavor and or humidity contributing elements incorporated into the mouthpiece piston 10 or into other components of the non-combustible cartridge.

[0034] The Modular Contained Combustion Cartridge and Integrated Ignition System 100 can be provided both as a complete device, prefilled with smoking material 420 ready to use as a fully assembled and sealed system with the Integrated ignition module 30 installed as well as in a package of multiple empty or pre filled sealed cartridges 70 with or without the ignition module 30 and or with a built in or optional energy source such as but not limited to a battery.

[0035] The system allows for optional reuse of the ignition module 30 as well as the other components and or the entirety of the cartridge 70 to reduce waste and cost per use.

[0036] In one embodiment, the Modular Contained Combustion Cartridge and Integrated Ignition System 100 is assembled with a mouthpiece piston 10 which serves to function as a plunger as needed connected to a first end of the capsule 20 and the ignition module 30 connected to a second end of the capsule 20.

[0037] The mouthpiece piston 10 is an elegant piece of seemingly simple yet highly engineered multifunctional geometry.

[0038] It is directly because of this engineered geometry that the mouthpiece piston 10 is capable of performing a number of different tasks while still being constructed or manufactured in a monolithic fashion to simplify production and yet can be also comprised of multiple parts if desirable for any reason.

[0039] It is highly multifunctional using the below described specific geometry to combine the functionalities of mouthpiece, smoking material 420 advancement plunger, filter and or screen, additional filter housing, capsule seal and closure for one end of the cartridge 70, smoke and or vapor cooler and conditioner, as well as a location for a humidity control component compartment for maintaining optimal moisture content of the smoking material 23. Furthermore, it is the actuation of the mouthpiece piston 10 which breaks the seal on its end of the cartridge 70 establishing the connection of the fluid flow path required for the smoke and or thermally extracted vapor an egress via the apertures and pathways contained within.

[0040] A key element of the mouthpiece piston 10 is located at the interface of the mouthpiece piston 10 and the capsule 20. This element can take the form of an increased diameter and or matched tapered flange 15 or another means of engaging with the capsule 20 in a manner that provides a means of forming a seal with capsule 20.

[0041] The tapered flange 15 serves several purposes. First the tapered flange 15 provides a means for retention of the mouthpiece piston 10 within the capsule 20.

[0042] Also, the tapered flange has an uninterrupted circumferential surface 18 between the apertures 16 and the smaller diameter transition of the tapered flange 15 to cylinder or other geometry 12 which the uninterrupted circumferential surface 18 can then mate with a corresponding uninterrupted taper or other appropriate mating geometry surface on the inside surface of the capsule 21 to form a seal.

[0043] Additionally, the tapered flange 15 incorporates holes, slots or other shaped aperture(s) 16 which multifunctions as a filtration element due to the incorporation of multiple small channels 16,17 which then also function as a pathway or egress for the smoke and or vapor to exit the capsule 20 and enter the interior of the mouthpiece piston 10 to then transit the mouthpiece piston 10 and finally exit through the exit bore 11.

[0044] The elongated pathway above described also functions as a means to cool, condition and further filter particulates as well as other objectionable non-particulate components or elements when the additional filtration element 19 likely containing activated carbon or the like is installed removing some or all of them from the produced smoke and or vapor to help facilitate a more enjoyable experience.

[0045] The mouthpiece piston 10 also functions as a means to transport on demand the smoking material 420 contained in the capsule 20 toward the ignition module 30 to facilitate quick and reliable ignition or reignition of the smoking material 420. This action is initiated by the user whenever the gap between the smoking material 420 and the surface of the ignitor 32 of the ignition module 30 becomes too large to quickly or reliably initiate ignition.

[0046] The end of the mouthpiece piston 12 may also have engineered non flat geometry such as but not limited to ridges, pins or other protrusions to facilitate stirring or mixing of the smoking material 420 it is in contact with. This may prove useful for a variety of reasons such as but not limited to, bringing unburned material into better contact with the ignition module’s 30 ignitor 32.

[0047] The mouthpiece piston also has an engineered external actuation surface geometry 12 designed to fit and mate properly and accurately for controllable telescopic and or threaded actuation and or motion between the mouthpiece piston 10 and the capsule 20. If the mouthpiece piston external actuation surface geometry 12 is of a threaded design, then the corresponding mating surface of the capsule 20 will have an accommodating mating geometry 24 intended to mate properly to the mouthpiece piston 10 so as to facilitate desired actuation as well as to create or incorporate whatever type or degree or methodology of sealing for storage and or usage of the product as well as enabling proper flow of smoke and or vapor as is required.

[0048] The accommodating actuation geometry 12 is of such a nature to minimize undesirable leakage of air or smoke and or vapor between the mouthpiece piston 10 and the capsule 20 and or the outside environment. This geometry 12 may include the use of various different materials and or seals as needed to accomplish a reasonably tight fitment to minimize leakage, or the mating surfaces may simply be of a sufficiently tight clearance and accurate fitment to accomplish the same objective without the need for additional seals or materials.

[0049] In one embodiment, when the gap between the ignition module 30 and the smokable material 420 becomes larger than desirable, the user may simply press the mouthpiece piston 10 towards the ignition module 30. This action will advance the remaining unburned smoking material 420 and subsequently close the gap restablishing reliable reignition from the ignition module 30.

[0050] In another embodiment, the user may twist the mouthpiece piston 10 relative to the capsule 20 to thread and therefore actuate and advance the mouthpiece piston in a direction in which the mouthpiece piston 10 and subsequently the remaining smokable material 420 is transported towards the ignition module 30 to again bring it within proximity suitable for reignition.

[0051] The mouthpiece piston 10 and or capsule 20 may also incorporate one or more seals 13. These seals may serve any number of purposes from locking or holding the mouthpiece piston 10 in position relative to the capsule 20 until it is ready for use, providing a more complete and or durable seal to preserve stored smoking material 420 until consumption, protection of the capsule 20 from excessive or concentrated force from the mouthpiece piston 10 being retracted as well as a tamper seal or authenticity seal.

[0052] The capsule 20 may be fabricated from any suitable material such as but not limited to glass, metal, ceramic, wood or other cellulosic material(s). The capsule 20 is constructed in such a fashion that it contains a specific intentional mating geometry such as threads 23 or another geometric means of engaging with threads, a taper 21 and or some other means such as but not limited to a shoulder, boss or any other suitable structure or geometry capable of retaining the mouthpiece piston 10 within the capsule 20.

[0053] In one embodiment the capsule 20 is designed to be of a shape receptive to the on demand advancement of the mouthpiece piston 10 and subsequently the smoking material 420 advanced by the actuation of the coupled mouthpiece piston 10.

[0054] Opposite the mouthpiece piston 10, the open end of the capsule 20 may be sealed 22 by any suitable means such as a foil seal, combustible cellophane, taper to taper seal, any sort of plug and or with wax and or another environmentally friendly sealant and or an o-ring in conjunction with a component to facilitate a seal between the capsule 20, the above described component and the O-ring, a silicone cap or other similar gasket or sealing component attached as a closure to the capsule 20 to preserve the volatile contents of the smoking material 420 after filling and packaging at manufacturing until received by the end user or installed and sealed by the end used at any point.

[0055] One or more examples of a contained combustion cartridge 70 or heat resistant enclosure or capsule 20 may include or be composed of any suitable material such as glass, ceramic, wood, metal, cardboard and the like, having a shape appropriate for the purposes disclosed in this document.

[0056] Another embodiment of the capsule 20 component of the cartridge may be shaped to accommodate pre-manufactured smoking items 42 such as but not limited to cigarettes, joints, cones or the like while retaining the ability to similarly couple to the integrated ignition system ignitor 30.

[0057] This above described embodiment provides multiple benefits for those who have or desire to use commonly available smoking items 42, as the Modular Contained Combustion Cartridge and Integrated Ignition System 100 provides many of the aforementioned benefits including ondemand wind resistant ignition and rapid extinguishing of the smoking materials 420 contained within the smoking items 42 as well as containing the combustion and errant sparks and ash.

[0058] There are many advantages achieved when all of the combustible material is contained within a heat resistant enclosure. This configuration or design of a smoking apparatus substantially reduces several things including but not limited to secondhand smoke, smoldering, sparks, cherries and other various unintended materials such as ash or embers which can be problematic or cause damage, burns and or initiate unintended fires.

[0059] The use of any suitable seal of an appropriate material can be incorporated into the capsule 20 at locations 24 and 25 to assist with or augment the capacity of the mouthpiece piston 10 to form a suitable seal or connection to the capsule 20.

[0060] In addition, having all of the smoking material 420 contained within a heat resistant enclosure or capsule 20 substantially reduces the amount of wasted smoking material 420 which would otherwise be consumed through smoldering; in other words, while the device and therefore the material is idle and or not actively being smoked.

[0061] This design significantly reduces the wastage of the aforementioned smoking material 420 henceforth increasing the operational efficacy and efficiency of this delivery system relative to many other smoking methods.

[0062] The ignition module 30 provides a simple and quick means of achieving on demand ignition and subsequent re-ignition by the user to initiate combustion of the smoking material 420 contained in the capsule 20.

[0063] Non-limiting examples of suitable ignition systems are described as follows. In one embodiment the device utilizes an electric element 32 such as but not limited to kanthal or nichrome wire or filament of any design or configuration as a means of converting electrical energy and creating sufficient thermal intensity for initiating ignition of a combustible substance. This element 32 may be of any suitable shape or size to effectively initiate combustion and or to facilitate thermal extraction.

[0064] In another embodiment, the device utilizes a high intensity light source such as but not limited to a laser, halogen bulb, LED and or any other source of light of sufficient intensity to initiate combustion. In this configuration, the capsule 20 and or the ignition system 30 may have a lens or other optical property or component integrated or added to it for the purpose of focusing the light from the source to the degree appropriate for ignition or thermal extraction.

[0065] In another embodiment, the device utilizes a high voltage power supply to create an arc or plasma to either directly or indirectly supply the necessary heat and temperature for initiation of combustion and or thermal extraction of the material contained within the cartridge.

[0066] It is noted that the ignition system 30 need not be electronic. For example, the ignition system may also be a flame, ember or slow burning charcoal.

[0067] In another embodiment or example, the ignition may be powered using the 510 threaded and or magnetically coupled DC (Direct Current ) connection platform which is commonly available for many other purposes and generally consists of two parts not including the 510 battery. The heating and or ignition module 30 may use various parts of the connection geometry of the mating surfaces of the ignition module 30 and 35 as a means of establishing a path of electrical continuity to connect and operate the element 32. This mating geometry 34 may also incorporate a means to be attached to a somewhat standardized 510 battery with or without a button for switching control.

[0068] The ignition module 30 may also be used as a solo or separate element for the purposes of igniting commonly available smoking materials 42 as well as for any other purpose deemed appropriate for a portable modular ignitor 30.

[0069] It is also considered within the scope of this disclosure to include non-ignition uses for the ignition system 30 especially when coupled to a commonly available power source or portable battery.as there exists a broad range of uses for an on demand hot surface capable of achieving ignition and or cauterizing temperatures.

[0070] This configuration can be used to light cigars and cigarettes, as well as joints, pipes, bowls and nearly any other conceivable type or configuration of smoking material(s).

[0071] It is also anticipated that any suitable source of electrical energy including but not limited to capacitors and or compatible connection methodology including but not limited to magnetic connectors, push pins or the like may be used to couple the ignition module 30 to an appropriate energy source as needed.

[0072] The mouthpiece piston and capsule combination or cartridge 70 may be coupled to the ignition module 30 via a friction fit-o-ring connection 33, magnetic interface, threads, adhesive, press or shrink fit or any other suitable means of component connectivity to ensure secure and consistent functionality of the assembly.

[0073] The entire Modular Contained Combustion Cartridge and Integrated Ignition System 100 may be assembled including the ignition module 30, filled with the consumable material of choice 420 and coupled or not connected to a battery or other source of energy and made available for sale in a completely ready to use condition.

[0074] The methodology for initiation of combustion or thermal extraction within the device varies and includes but is not limited to pressing a button and drawing, an action by which the user reduces relative air pressure over the exit bore 11 on the mouthpiece piston 10 of the device, simply drawing on the device to activate the ignition module 30, shaking, twisting or any other feasible method of communicating from the user to the device that ignition is now desired.

[0075] In challenging situations where the ignition module 30 and or its power source has failed or is for any reason non operable, use is still possible by removing the mouthpiece piston and capsule assembly or cartridge 70 from the ignition module 30 and using a traditional match, lighter or any other source of ignition to directly ignite the smoking material 420.

[0076] Upon achieving ignition, reattaching the assembly 70 onto the ignition module 30 then functions to prevent errant sparks or embers from escaping the cartridge 70 and to also enable use of the battery and ignition module 30 as a handle.

[0077] The thermal extraction capability of the heat resistant cartridge described 70 can be further expanded or achieved by installing a compatible temperature indicating cap 419 over the open end of cartridge 70 and subsequently applying sufficient heat from any suitable heat source to achieve thermal activation of the temperature indicating cap 419. Once the temperature indicating cap 419 has received sufficient thermal energy and indicated achievement of thermal extraction temperature, the cartridge 70 and temperature indicating cap assembly 421 can be used in a similar manner as when used with the modular ignitor 30 for smoking as the residual heat from the temperature indicating cap 419 and the now heated cartridge 70 facilitate thermal extraction of the active compounds contained within the smoking material 420 instead of combustion when the user takes a puff or draw.

[0078] In use, the user either fills or purchases a pre filled modular contained combustion cartridge 70 with his or her desired smoking material 420, secures the cartridge 70 to the ignition module 30 if not already connected and activates the integrated ignition system to heat or ignite the material contained in the cartridge. The user may simultaneously or subsequently draw on the mouthpiece to extract or inhale the smoke and / or vapor. When the user no longer desires any further output from the cartridge 70, it may then be separated from the ignition module 30 and disposed of or the residual material removed and cartridge cleaned and or refilled for reuse.

[0079] Uniquely, the device disclosed herein comprises (i) the combination of a combustible and non-combustible heating means into a single system, and, (ii) the use of a combustion resistant or incombustible cartridge in a system utilizing a heating means to initiate combustion of smoking material within said cartridge. (iii) a design in which the mouthpiece is multifunctional including the ability to advance the smoking material as needed for reliable reignition. (iv) the combination of cartridge, smoking material, heat and or ignition source and a means to seal the components together and also to selectively and on demand initiate combustion and or thermal extraction. (v)
