Description

[0001] EMERGENCY FOG SYSTEM FOR VEHICLES

[0002] Technical field of the invention

[0003] The present invention relates to the technical field of road signaling devices or systems. More specifically, the invention relates to an emergency system for signaling the proximity of accidents or potential accidents to vehicles traveling in low visibility conditions with their fog lights on.

[0004] Background of the invention

[0005] The activation of fog lights is a clear indication of the driver's perception of poor visibility and, therefore, a potential for accidents, often a chain reaction. Currently, the Directorate General of Traffic (DGT) mandates the use of rear fog lights on vehicles such as cars, trucks, and similar vehicles, but not front fog lights, although the vast majority of vehicles on the market also have them. The use of rear fog lights is, therefore, mandatory in cases of very poor visibility, while the use of front fog lights is optional, although recommended and / or routine in similar situations.Specifically, Royal Decree 1428 / 2003, of November 21, establishes that "The rear fog light must only be switched on when weather or environmental conditions are particularly unfavorable, such as in the case of thick fog, very heavy rain, heavy snowfall, or dense clouds of dust or smoke." Regarding the use of headlights, in cases of "weather or environmental conditions that significantly reduce visibility, such as fog, heavy rain, snowfall, clouds of smoke or dust, or any other similar circumstance," this decree establishes the mandatory use of vehicle lighting in the form of the front fog light or the short- or long-beam headlights. Front fog lights may also be switched on on roads with carriageways less than 6.50 m wide and with a large number of consecutive curves.

[0006] In very low visibility conditions, drivers can only make out objects a few meters ahead; it's also quite possible that the road ahead won't be clearly visible. Furthermore, conditions become more complicated if this low visibility is due to factors that add moisture to the road surface (such as heavy rain, snow, or fog itself), making it slippery. This is further complicated at very low temperatures by the freezing of liquid on the road surface.

[0007] Current systems designed to mitigate the consequences of driving in low visibility include, for example, devices in the form of bright lines installed on the road that can be illuminated in situations of reduced vision and that mark the path of the roadway, anti-fog beacons located at the sides of the road, systems to prevent or reduce the formation of fog by means of devices that attempt to act, for example, on the humidity or temperature of a localized environment, automatic anti-collision systems for braking or maintaining the distance with respect to frontal obstacles, etc.

[0008] Although all of these systems, and others not mentioned, help prevent or at least alert the driver to the imminent danger of a collision, it is impossible to completely prevent these types of accidents from occurring due to the sudden and untimely onset of these conditions (dust clouds, rapidly forming weather conditions) and the human factor, with its obvious deficiencies in reaction and attention. Therefore, it is still common for drivers to react in these situations by slamming on the brakes in response to a real possibility of impact or simply motivated by fear or a false sense that such an impact was going to happen. In the best-case scenario, if the sudden braking was due to a driver's poor judgment, the most common consequence is a significant recovery time for the driver (very long if, for example, the vehicle's airbag system has been activated) and the car, van, or truck—this time in a real and tangible way—becoming a danger to vehicles traveling behind it. The effects can even be tragic, for example, in the well-known multiple or chain-reaction accidents.

[0009] For this reason, an accident hazard warning system would be desirable in low-visibility conditions, once a first collision or incident has already occurred, so that vehicles traveling behind the first collision or incident can react in time to avoid the subsequent chain of impacts. The system does not warn of a potential dangerous situation, but rather alerts to a real risk condition that has occurred at that moment. Therefore, the vehicle user who receives this alert knows with absolute certainty that the danger is real and imminent, although, due to the characteristics explained in later sections of this report, they may have a few seconds or meters to react preemptively. The system will mark the position of the first incident on the road and, in addition, a few meters before the final stop of the vehicle involved in that incident. Furthermore, the appearance of this mark can be communicated consecutively to all subsequent vehicles equipped with the system of the invention.

[0010] Explanation of the invention

[0011] To this end, the object of the present invention is an emergency fog system for vehicles. The system is activated when the fog lights are on and a deceleration threshold is exceeded. The system has one or more beacon lights positioned at the lower rear of the vehicle, and when the system is activated, these beacons extend downwards via extendable means. These beacons are powered by a battery and are connected to an on-board controller that provides the activation signal for the extendable means; the activation signal is obtained from a signal indicating that the fog lights are on and another signal indicating that the vehicle has braked or decelerated beyond a predetermined threshold. The beacon or beacons have one or more lower support parts, i.e., some of them may share a housing; each beacon has an upper lighting part that emits the signaling light; the extendable means can be extended or deployed until the lower part of each beacon touches the pavement or rolling surface of the corresponding road. When the beacons are extended and in contact with the ground, they are visible to other vehicles. Furthermore, when the lower part of the beacon touches the pavement, means for automatically securing it to the pavement are activated, such that the beacon is secured in that position; at the same time, or within a time period appropriate for such an operation, a beacon release mechanism is activated so that the extendable means are disconnected or separated from the beacon, and the vehicle continues moving away from the beacon's position on the ground. The beacon also comprises means for activating the power supply so that the battery begins to supply power and the beacon then emits the signal light from its position on the ground; until that moment, the beacon was at rest, not emitting any light. These means for activating the power supply can, in turn, be activated as a result of the activation of the beacon's release mechanism or the means for automatically securing it to the pavement, or as a result of both actions.

[0012] According to one feature of the system of the invention, each beacon comprises a lower support portion specific to itself; that is, the vehicle may comprise several independent beacons, each with its own extension means, its own release mechanism, and its own means of automatic attachment to the pavement. The vehicle may have one or several of these individual beacons.

[0013] Another characteristic is that all the beacons share a common lower support portion, i.e., a single housing. This common lower portion is or comprises a bar arranged longitudinally across the width of the vehicle. The beacons are firmly fixed to the support to form a single, integral assembly.

[0014] Another feature of the invention relates to the fact that the signal indicating that the fog lights are on, which is used to obtain the activation signal for the extendable means, may refer to the front fog lights being on and / or the rear fog lights being on. Furthermore, according to another feature, the signal indicating that a deceleration threshold has been exceeded may be or be obtained from a signal from the vehicle's ABS system.

[0015] Regarding the means for securing the beacon to the pavement, in a preferred embodiment, these may comprise one or more nail guns actuated by the impact of the nail's output end against the ground. This type of gun is known and commercially available.

[0016] In another embodiment of the system of the invention, the means that activate the power supply of the beacon through its corresponding battery comprise a sheet interposed between the battery contacts and the corresponding contacts of the beacon light. This sheet is electrically insulating and, while in this position, prevents the communication of energy to power and turn on the light. In addition, a portion of the sheet is strongly or firmly connected to the extendable means mounted on the bottom of the vehicle, such that, when the beacon is fixed to the ground thanks to the action of the automatic means for fixing it to the pavement, the extendable means—which move with the vehicle—will drag the sheet along with them, allowing the battery to come into electrical contact with the beacon light to turn the latter on.

[0017] According to a further feature of the invention, the controller or on-board control means are connected to one or more speakers of the vehicle to report on different activation or standby states or battery level or other circumstances of the anti-fog system.

[0018] In another preferred embodiment, the anti-fog system comprises a repeater system for communicating the current position of a beacon attached to the ground. This repeater system will have repeaters on the beacons themselves to communicate their specific position and on the vehicle itself so that the on-board control means can communicate the locations and, therefore, the distances at which successive beacons attached to the road are located, thereby indicating a potentially dangerous situation. The beacons attached to the ground can then act as repeater antennas for vehicles equipped with the system of the invention that are approaching them. In relation to this embodiment, the vehicle's loudspeakers can be used to voice-report the location of successive beacons or beacon bars along the vehicle's route.

[0019] According to another feature, the lighting configuration of the beacons can be variable to indicate greater or lesser proximity to the original hazard position, i.e., the position of the first beacon fixed to the pavement. To this end, the beacons can comprise several lights, with different colors, and a beacon controller that activates a corresponding lighting configuration of those lights depending on the distance to the first activated beacon. To determine this distance, the beacon controller can use the aforementioned repeater system.

[0020] According to a further feature of the invention, the means for extending the beacons toward the ground may comprise bars connected and articulated to one another so as to provide the necessary folding / unfolding or extension / retraction functionality; they may also comprise a mechanism that extends or actuates said bars with one or more pistons or elastically loaded means, such as springs. This latter extension or actuation mechanism may be returned to its initial position after activation of the anti-fog system of the invention, so that it is ready for subsequent activation in future situations.

[0021] Another feature of the invention is that the material of the beacons and their lower support parts must be sufficiently resistant to withstand the passage of vehicles over them and so that they maintain correct operation, whether said vehicles pass by rolling normally or sliding on the pavement due to a sudden application of the brakes.

[0022] In another embodiment of the invention relating to the last mentioned feature, the extendable means may be made, at least partially, from aluminum and the lower support part may comprise rubber / rubber combined with canvas.

[0023] Finally, according to a further feature of the invention, the beacon may comprise means for deactivating it. These deactivation means will have the effect of, at the very least, turning off the beacon's light, although they could also deactivate other parts of it, or simply interrupt, cut off, or turn off its power supply to deactivate it entirely. The deactivation means are controlled through the beacon control means, which are, in turn, connected to the beacon's repeater system, such that, depending on one or more signals from the different repeaters, the control means can activate the deactivation means.

[0024] These and other features and advantages of the invention will become apparent from the description of the preferred, but not exclusive, embodiments, which are illustrated by way of non-limiting example in the accompanying drawings.

[0031] Figure 5 schematically shows another embodiment of an individual beacon of the invention to describe some additional details of the system.

[0032] Figure 6 schematically shows a situation in which an incident has occurred on the road and emergency systems of the invention have been activated in successive vehicles approaching the position of said incident.

[0033] Detailed description of the invention

[0034] Figure 1(a) shows a schematic view of a vehicle, from the rear, with an emergency anti-fog system (100) installed. Both Figures 1(a) and 1(b) serve to explain the concept of the invention, said representations being simply schematic sketches of some of the components of the system (100) that can be seen from the outside of the corresponding vehicle.

[0035] As can be seen, the system comprises one or several light beacons (110) that are installed on the underside of the car, or any other vehicle that has sufficient and adequate space for mounting all the elements of the system (100); in this specification, reference may occasionally be made to terms such as “car”, “vehicle” or similar, to avoid the repetition of words and to facilitate reading of the description, but it is understood that the range of vehicles in which the system (100) can be applied is that broadly defined in the previous sentence.

[0036] These light beacons (110) can be mounted individually (Figure 1 (a)), each with its lower support part (114) (as a casing) or they can all be mounted on a common lower part (114) (Figures 3 and 4). In the latter case, the preferred embodiment of said lower support part (114) is an (elongated) bar (150) that is mounted transversely to the longitudinal dimension of the vehicle and, as previously mentioned, in its lower rear part. The way in which each individual beacon (110) is fastened to the bottom of the vehicle - or to all of said beacons (110) when they share a common lower support part (114) - is achieved by means of extendable means (120) that can be better seen in Figure 3, since in Figures 1 (a) and 1 (b) they are in their folded configuration. These extendable means (120) therefore have two essential operating positions, which are: a first retraction or collection position (figures 1 (a) and 1 (b)) in which the beacons (110) are as close as possible to the bottom of the vehicle to allow normal circulation of the latter, and a second activation, extension or deployment position (figure 3) in which said means (120) extend downwards until the lower part (114) supporting the beacons touches or impacts the underlying pavement.

[0037] This extension position occurs in an emergency situation in low visibility conditions. To this end, the system (100) is designed to extend said means (120) when a deceleration or braking exceeding a planned threshold is detected and the fog lights are on at the same time, that is, when the vehicle has had to brake suddenly in very low visibility conditions. The sudden braking can be detected by different means (such as, for example, some type of ad-hoc accelerometer or any appropriate signal from one of the vehicle's standard systems) and, in one of the preferred embodiments, the ABS system (170) of the automobile is used.

[0038] As is known, the ABS (170) works in conjunction with the vehicle's traditional braking system. It essentially consists of a pump incorporated into the brake fluid circuits and detectors that monitor the revolutions of the wheels. If sudden braking is detected, or if the revolutions of one or more wheels suddenly decrease, the ABS (170) is activated upon interpreting that the wheels may lock without the vehicle having stopped. This would imply an uncontrolled slide of the vehicle and, therefore, the aforementioned detectors send a signal to the ABS system control module (170), which automatically reduces the pressure applied to the brakes.

[0039] The other signal that comes into play to define the activation of the system (100) is one that indicates the situation of low visibility and, for this, a signal indicating that the front or rear fog lights (160) are on, or that both the front and rear lights are on, can be used. When said deceleration occurs in conditions of low visibility, the system (100) is activated by deploying the extendable means (120) that are located in the position of figure 3. As soon as the lower part (114) of the support of the beacons (110) touches the pavement (with a certain impulse or push) some means (118) of automatic fixing to the ground of the road are activated and, at the same time, or with an adequate delay, a release mechanism is also activated that releases the beacon or beacons (110) with respect to the extendable means (120).In this way, the beacon (110) is firmly fixed to the pavement, freed from its connection to the vehicle that activated it, and signaling the location of a possible accident right in that position or a few meters ahead.

[0040] For the generation, synchronization and emission of the activation signal, s a , and others that will be described later, the system (100) also has control means (140). The control means (140) will therefore receive the signal of the fog lights (160) being on and the ABS signal (170), and will consequently emit the activation signal, s a. This has been represented in the form of a block diagram in Figure 2. In said figure, an embodiment of the emergency anti-fog system (100) of the invention is shown which corresponds to a complete variant, that is, it comprises all the options considered in the secondary claims. Thus, it can be seen that the control means (140) are also connected to the vehicle's loudspeakers in order to inform or warn passengers and the driver about the status of the system (100); this option will be especially useful when the emergency system (100) also contains a repeater system (180). This system (180) is designed so that, once a beacon or beacons (110) have been fixed to the pavement by the activation of the system (100) in a given vehicle, the position of that first beacon (110) fixed to the road can be communicated to other vehicles traveling in that direction. In this way, the most probable position of the possible incident or accident can be communicated even before the drivers of successive vehicles can see the light of the first fixed beacon (110). This is achieved with the repeaters (180) which, for this purpose, can be mounted - as shown in figure 2 - both in the part of the system (100) that is always incorporated into the vehicle (and marked within a closed dashed line in said figure 2) and in the beacon (110) itself that will be detached from the vehicle in case of activation of the system (100). In this way, the repeater (180) of a first beacon (110) fixed to the pavement will be able to transmit its position to be received by the repeaters (180) of successive vehicles, or even of other beacons (110) that are also attached to the road because other vehicles activated their corresponding emergency systems (100).

[0041] These successive beacons (110) fixed to the pavement can then act as a repeater antenna system until the position signal reaches a vehicle traveling towards them and which can be informed of the exact distance to the possible danger, for example, through loudspeakers.

[0042] The vehicle loudspeaker warning system may be replaced or supplemented by a variable configuration of the lighting pattern of the beacons (110). To this end, each beacon (110) may comprise a light capable of emitting different colors or several lights of different colors between them. Each beacon (110) will emit a lighting pattern that will give an idea of the proximity of the first beacon (110) fixed to the pavement. This is achieved with beacon control means (111) incorporated in the latter and connected to the repeater system (180) in order to prepare and emit, thus, the appropriate lighting pattern depending on the position communicated by the first beacon (110).

[0043] A specific example of practical application of the invention is shown in Figure 6. This example is deduced from what is claimed in correspondence with the previous paragraph. The beacon (110) of the emergency anti-fog system (100) has a plurality of lights comprising a red light and an orange or yellow light. All the beacons (110) represented in Figures 6 are of the type indicated in the present invention; an indication (R), (N) or (N') has simply been added to their right to indicate the light activated by each of them, as will be understood from the following explanation. The control means (111) of said beacon (110) are arranged to activate:

[0044] - the red light flashing (R) when the distance of fixing to the pavement with respect to the first beacon (110) or bar (150) fixed to the pavement is less than a first distance d1 (for example, d1 could be 20 m),

[0045] - the orange or yellow light flashing (N) when the distance of fixing to the pavement with respect to the first beacon (110) or bar (150) fixed to the pavement is between the first distance d1 and a second distance d2 (for example, d2 = 40 m), and

[0046] - the orange or yellow light in a static manner (N') when the distance from the pavement with respect to the first beacon (110) or bar (150) fixed to the pavement is greater than the second distance d2; in the drawing in figure 6 an upper limit, d3, of 60 m has been illustrated for the activation of this static orange or yellow light, but it is understood that the values are only indicative and, for example, this distance d3 could be much greater, or, alternatively, a smaller or greater number of sections could be defined (d1, d2, d3, ...).) differentiated by the lighting pattern of their corresponding beacons (110); the essence of this embodiment is the definition of several different sections (in this case three, d1, d2 and d3) depending on the proximity to the first beacon (110) or bar (150) deployed, so that, in each of these sections, a different light and / or a different light pattern is activated to indicate to the driver his proximity to the scene of the incident.

[0047] In another embodiment, as a parameter for the lighting pattern of the successively deployed beacons (110), the temporal order of their activation could be considered (in combination or not with the proximity to the first activated beacon (110) and which has been described in the previous paragraph): for example, the first two or three activated beacons (110) (fixed to the pavement) would turn on a flashing red light (R), the next two or three would turn on a flashing orange light (N) and, from that position, a fixed orange light (N') would be activated or any similar temporal / spatial combination that has a deterrent or danger warning effect for approaching drivers.

[0048] As for the means (118) for automatically fixing to the pavement, in one of the preferred embodiments, said means (118) are materialized in the form of one or several manual nail guns as can be best seen in figure 5; in this figure, the interior parts or components of the beacon (110) have been represented with dashed lines. This specific type of guns are activated by touching or impacting the end through which the nails emerge from the same, whereby the extendable means (120) themselves, by causing the beacon (110) to descend, would activate the firing of the nails when the mouth of the gun protrudes from the bottom of the lower part (114) of the beacon and impacts it against the surface of the pavement.

[0049] It should be noted that the beacon light (110) naturally remains off while the system (100) is deactivated, in its folded-back position against the bottom of the vehicle. For this reason, a battery (116) and means for activating the power supply of the battery (116) are provided such that the latter only supplies power to the beacon light (110) when the anti-fog system (100) has been activated and has fixed the corresponding beacon or beacons (110) to the road surface. In one of the preferred embodiments, these means for activating the power supply are made in the form of an electrically insulating sheet (130) (Figure 5).The insulating sheet (130) is mounted between the electrical contacts of the battery (116) and the corresponding ones of the beacon light or lights (110) in such a way that it prevents physical contact between them, which would be firm and clear, so as to facilitate the passage of the electric current, if said sheet (130) were not present (for example, thanks to an elastic mechanism (springs or similar) that is constantly pushing the battery against the contacts of the beacon light (110)).A part of the insulating sheet (130) is firmly connected to the extendable means (120) (which is represented by the end of the sheet (130) in figure 5 which projects outside the beacon (110) and is curved upwards) in such a way that, when the beacon (110) is firmly fixed to the pavement and the extendable means (120) are released from it, the latter (which move with the vehicle) will drag the sheet (130) with them, removing it from its barrier position between the contacts of the battery (116) and the light of the beacon (110) and causing it to turn on.

[0050] In this regard, it is worth mentioning here that the release mechanism of the beacon with respect to the extendable means (120) may be, for example, a jaw or clamp closed on the beacon (110) (for example on its lower support part (114)) and which releases its grip after the automatic fixing means to the pavement are activated (for example, the gun (118)) by means of a mechanism that opens the jaws of the jaw. It could also be a jaw or clamp with its jaws elastically closed, applying pressure to the beacon (110), with a force sufficient to hold the beacon (110) in a normal automobile route but such that it does not resist the fixing force of the beacon (110) to the pavement, whereby the grip of said jaws, which would be based on the friction / pressure of their surfaces against the beacon (110), would be overcome.

[0051] The material of the lower support part (114) (either in its individual form for a single beacon (110) or in its bar form (150)) may comprise, in one of the preferred embodiments, a rubber or rubber body with interposition or covering of one or more layers of canvas, for example in the style of the material used in conveyor belts or bands. One of the requirements that this material must meet is that it has sufficient rigidity to support the means (118) for automatic fixing to the pavement, such as nail guns, and to act as a consistent support in order to resist the impact of the muzzle of said guns against the road surface to activate them. If, for the lower support part (114), the material mentioned in this paragraph is used, said rigidity could be enhanced, for example, by using reinforcement elements inserted and / or fixed externally, such as bars or rods of aluminum or other similar rigid material.

[0052] It is also foreseen that a beacon (110) fixed to the pavement after its activation in the corresponding vehicle can be automatically deactivated to take into account the cases in which it has been activated by a false alarm, such as braking due to a temporary obstacle (an animal crossing, for example) or a mistaken impression by the driver that has not had major consequences, the vehicle having been able to continue its normal movement after the incident. For this purpose, deactivation means (190) are incorporated into the beacon (110) which are connected to the control means (111); since the part of the repeater system (180) that is incorporated in the vehicle will be in communication with the part of said system (180) included in the beacon (110) fixed to the pavement, the latter will have information on the distance at which the vehicle is located and, when it exceeds a threshold (called in the claims "threshold withdrawal distance"), the control means (111) may give an order to the deactivation means (190) so that they deactivate said beacon (110) stuck in the ground. The fact of exceeding said threshold distance will be considered by the system (100) as evidence that the vehicle has not actually suffered any accident, and that it has been able to continue its journey normally, at least until it can stop later without constituting a danger to the circulation of other vehicles.
