Description

Battery packs and ESS including them

[0001] The present invention relates to a battery pack and an ESS including the same.

[0002] This application claims priority to Korean Patent Application No. 10-2023-0119307, filed on September 7, 2023, and all contents disclosed in the specification and drawings of the said application are incorporated herein by reference.

[0003] This application claims priority to Korean Patent Application No. 10-2023-0149469, filed on November 1, 2023, and all contents disclosed in the specification and drawings of the said application are incorporated herein by reference.

[0004] This application claims priority to Korean Patent Application No. 10-2023-0119308, filed on September 7, 2023, and all contents disclosed in the specification and drawings of the said application are incorporated herein by reference.

[0005] This application claims priority to Korean Patent Application No. 10-2023-0159736, filed on November 17, 2023, and all contents disclosed in the specification and drawings of the said application are incorporated by reference into this application.

[0006] Secondary batteries, which boast high electrical properties such as high energy density and easy applicability across a wide range of product categories, are widely used not only in portable devices but also in electric vehicles (EVs), hybrid electric vehicles (HEVs), and energy storage systems (ESSs). These batteries are attracting attention as a new energy source for environmental friendliness and energy efficiency, not only because they can dramatically reduce fossil fuel use, but also because they produce no byproducts from energy use.

[0007] Depending on the charge / discharge capacity required by an electric vehicle (EV), hybrid electric vehicle (HEV), or energy storage system (ESS), multiple battery cells are connected in series or parallel to form a battery pack. Typically, a battery module containing at least one battery cell is first constructed, and then other components are added to form a battery pack or battery rack using this at least one battery module. Recently, battery packs in the cell-to-pack form, where multiple battery cells are housed directly in a pack housing, etc., without being modularized, have also been manufactured.

[0008] However, in battery packs containing such a large number of lithium secondary batteries, the damage from fires and explosions is bound to be even greater. Fires in battery packs originate from abnormal temperature rises and internal gas generation within the battery cells. Consequently, when the internal pressure of the battery cells rises above a certain level, venting occurs, ejecting high-temperature gas, electrode active materials, and high-temperature sparks containing aluminum particles from the battery cells.

[0009] Therefore, to ensure the safety of battery pack operation, venting gas must be quickly vented to the outside of the battery pack to prevent further increases in internal pressure when a thermal event, such as thermal runaway, occurs within the battery pack. If this venting gas is not properly vented to the outside, the rate at which thermal runaway propagates between battery cells can increase. Furthermore, venting this gas to the outside is crucial, as it can lead to more serious problems, such as battery pack explosion.

[0010] Accordingly, in the case of conventional battery packs, a venting portion is provided in the pack case to discharge high-temperature venting gases, etc., to the outside of the pack case when a thermal event occurs in a specific battery cell or battery module. At this time, the venting portion is provided in a perforated form, such as a hole, to induce the gas to be discharged from the inside to the outside.

[0011] However, for this type of battery pack, there is a risk that external contaminants such as moisture will infiltrate through the venting. In particular, when a conventional battery pack is supplied with a water-cooled cooling medium rather than an air-cooled one, condensation can form on the cooling pipes installed outside the battery pack, causing moisture and other contaminants to enter the battery pack through the venting section, making it difficult to ensure the waterproof performance of the battery pack.

[0012] Therefore, the need for a technology to prevent foreign substances such as moisture from entering the battery pack through the venting section under normal conditions of the battery pack arises.

[0013] In addition, when a thermal event occurs inside a battery pack, there is a growing need for technology to quickly discharge high-temperature gases, etc., outside the battery pack through a venting portion to prevent heat from accumulating or transferring inside the battery pack and to suppress the occurrence of flames.

[0014] Accordingly, the present invention is intended to solve the problems described above, and provides a battery pack and an ESS including the same that can ensure safety and reliability in the event of an abnormal situation in a battery cell or battery module.

[0015] However, the problems to be solved by the present invention are not limited to the problems described above, and other problems not mentioned can be clearly understood by those skilled in the art from the description of the invention described below.

[0016] To solve the above problem, a battery pack according to one aspect of the present invention comprises: a plurality of battery cells; a pack case that accommodates the plurality of battery cells and has a venting portion configured to discharge gas generated from the battery cells to the outside; and a cover member attached to the pack case and configured to open and close the venting portion.

[0017] The cover member may be configured to open when at least one of a specific temperature and pressure is reached inside the pack case, thereby allowing gas generated from the battery cell to be discharged to the outside.

[0018] The pack case may include a rib configured to cover at least a portion of the venting portion.

[0019] The above cover member can be attached to the outer surface of the pack case along the perimeter of the venting portion.

[0020] The above cover member may be attached to the inner surface of the pack case along the perimeter of the venting portion, and the rib may be configured to protrude inwardly from the inner surface of the pack case.

[0021] The above rib may include a portion whose thickness decreases toward the inner side of the pack case.

[0022] The above ribs may be provided to be inclined toward the outside of the pack case.

[0023] The above venting portion includes a plurality of venting holes partitioned by the ribs, and the cover member may have a different thickness for each of the plurality of venting holes.

[0024] The pack case may further include an opening / closing member configured to open / close at least one of the plurality of venting holes.

[0025] The above venting portion is provided in multiple numbers, and at least some of the plurality of venting portions may be provided with different sizes.

[0026] The pack case further includes a cooling unit configured to allow a cooling medium to flow, and the cover member may be provided on a side of the pack case where the cooling unit is located.

[0027] A battery pack according to one embodiment of the present invention may further include a venting device mounted on the venting portion and configured to be openable and closable.

[0028] The above cover member is attached to the outside of the venting device and can be configured to open together when the venting device is opened so that the gas is discharged to the outside of the pack case.

[0029] The above venting device may be formed with a protrusion configured to protrude toward the cover member.

[0030] And, the ESS according to the present invention may include a battery pack according to the present invention.

[0031] According to one aspect of the present invention, by securing waterproof and dustproof functions of a battery pack, it is possible to prevent moisture or dust from entering the inside of the battery pack, and to ensure the safety and reliability of the battery pack.

[0032] In addition, according to one aspect of the present invention, venting gas generated in an abnormal state of a battery cell can be smoothly discharged to the outside of the pack case, so that the performance of preventing thermal propagation per pack can be effectively secured.

[0033] Moreover, according to one aspect of the present invention, by preventing heat accumulation inside the pack case, other battery cells or battery modules can be prevented from receiving thermal damage as much as possible.

[0034] In addition, according to one aspect of the present invention, when the venting gas is completely discharged outside the pack case, oxygen is blocked from flowing into the pack case, thereby preventing or suppressing the generation of flames in the battery pack.

[0035] This can prevent or delay events such as fire or explosion due to thermal runaway of the battery pack or the device in which it is mounted.

[0036] In addition, the present invention may have various other effects, which will be described in each embodiment configuration, or an explanation of effects that can be easily inferred by a person skilled in the art will be omitted.

[0037] The following drawings attached to this specification illustrate preferred embodiments of the present invention, and together with the detailed description of the invention described below, serve to further understand the technical idea of the present invention, and therefore, the present invention should not be interpreted as being limited to matters described in such drawings.

For example, FIG. 5 may be a drawing showing a portion of the front side of the cross-section taken along line I-I' of FIG. 1.

[0064] Referring to FIGS. 1 to 5, a battery pack (10) according to one embodiment of the present invention includes a battery cell (100), a pack case (200), and a cover member (300).

[0065] First, referring primarily to FIG. 2, a plurality of battery cells (100) may be included. Although not illustrated in the drawing, the plurality of battery cells (100) may include an electrode assembly, a cell case accommodating the electrode assembly, and electrode leads connected to the electrode assembly and extending outward from the cell case to function as electrode terminals. In this case, the plurality of battery cells (100) may be electrically connected to each other.

[0066] The battery cell (100) may be a pouch-type secondary battery. The cell case of such a pouch-type secondary battery may be configured in a pouch shape in which a metal layer made of aluminum is interposed between polymer layers.

[0067] A plurality of battery cells (100) can be arranged in a vertical direction (Z-axis direction) and in a left-right direction (X-axis direction) as illustrated in FIG. 2. At this time, each battery cell (100) can have its sealing portion facing the front-back direction (Y-axis direction) and upward direction (+Z-axis direction), and its storage portion facing the left-right direction (X-axis direction).

[0068] A plurality of battery cells (100) can be stacked in parallel in the left-right direction (X-axis direction) to form a single cell array. As illustrated in Fig. 2, a plurality of the cell arrays can be arranged in parallel in the front-back direction (Y-axis direction).

[0069] Meanwhile, the present invention is not limited by the specific type or shape of the battery cell (100), and various battery cells (100) known at the time of filing of the present invention may be employed to configure the battery pack (10) of the present invention.

[0070] Additionally, a battery pack (10) according to one embodiment of the present invention may include a busbar assembly and / or terminal electrically connected to a plurality of battery cells (100) accommodated therein.

[0071] The pack case (200) may be configured to accommodate a plurality of battery cells (100). That is, the pack case (200) may provide a space for accommodating a plurality of battery cells (100). The pack case (200) may be made of a material that can ensure mechanical strength, such as a metal such as steel or SUS, or a plastic, or may include such a material, in order to safely protect the battery cells (100) accommodated therein.

[0072] Additionally, the pack case (200) may be provided with a venting portion (V). The venting portion (V) may be configured to discharge gas generated from the battery cells (100) housed inside to the outside of the pack case (200). The venting portion (V) may be provided so that the inside and the outside of the pack case (200) may be connected.

[0073] The venting portion (V) may be provided in the form of a hole. That is, the venting portion (V) may be provided in the form of a hole formed in the pack case (200) so that the inside and outside of the pack case (200) are connected. For example, the venting portion (V) may be provided in a circular shape. In this case, the position, shape, structure, etc. of the venting portion (V) provided in the pack case (200) may be designed differently depending on the internal structure of the pack case (200).

[0074] Meanwhile, a battery pack (10) according to one embodiment of the present invention includes a cover member (300). The cover member (300) may be configured to open and close the venting portion (V). Specifically, referring to FIGS. 4 and 5 , the cover member (300) may be configured to normally remain attached to the pack case (200) to cover the venting portion (V), but to open under specific circumstances.

[0075] According to the above-described embodiment of the present invention, since the cover member (300) is configured to cover the venting portion (V), foreign substances such as dust can be prevented from entering the inside of the pack case (200) through the venting portion (V). Accordingly, the dustproof function of the battery pack (10) can be secured, and thus the safety and reliability of the battery pack (10) can be guaranteed.

[0076] Specifically, the cover member (300) may be configured to open when the temperature and / or pressure inside the pack case (200) reaches at least one of a specific temperature and pressure. For example, the cover member (300) may be released from its attachment to the pack case (200) and detached, or a portion of the cover member (300) may be ruptured and opened by the pressure of gas.

[0077] According to the above-described embodiment of the present invention, when an abnormal situation occurs in the battery pack (10), the cover member (300) is opened as indicated by the bold arrow in FIG. 5, so that the gas generated in the battery cell (100) can be smoothly discharged to the outside of the pack case (200) through the exposed portion of the venting portion (V). Accordingly, when an abnormal situation occurs in the battery cell (100), the pressure inside the pack case (200) is prevented from increasing, and additional chain fires in other battery cells (100) can be prevented. Therefore, according to the above-described aspect of the present invention, the safety and reliability of the battery pack (10) can be guaranteed.

[0078] And, this cover member (300) can be attached to the pack case (200). That is, the cover member (300) can be configured to be attached to the pack case (200) and cover the entire venting portion (V). The cover member (300) can be provided by being adhered to the pack case (200). For example, the cover member (300) can be provided with a tape or include an adhesive surface in the form of a tape.

[0079] According to the above-described embodiment of the present invention, the cover member (300) can normally maintain adhesion with the pack case (200) to cover the venting portion (V). On the other hand, when at least one of a specific temperature and pressure is reached, the cover member (300) is easily ruptured, thereby exposing the venting portion (V), so that the internal gas can be quickly discharged to the outside of the pack case (200).

[0080]

[0081] The cover member (300) may be configured to prevent moisture penetration. For example, the cover member (300) may be provided with a sealing member to prevent moisture penetration into the inside of the pack case (200). Alternatively, the cover member (300) may be provided with any structure or material capable of preventing moisture penetration. For example, the cover member (300) may be provided with a waterproof material such as a waterproof tape. According to the above-described exemplary configuration of the present invention, moisture can be prevented from entering the inside of the battery pack (10) through the venting portion (V), and thus the waterproof function of the battery pack (10) can be secured.

[0082] Additionally, the cover member (300) may be made of a material with heat resistance. The battery pack (10) may generate heat during normal operation by repeatedly charging and discharging. Furthermore, a device equipped with a battery pack (10), such as an energy storage system, may be exposed to increased heat, particularly in high-temperature environments such as summer.

[0083] According to the above-described embodiment of the present invention, in the normal state of the battery pack (10), the cover member (300) can be stably maintained to cover the venting portion (V). In addition, even if high-temperature gas is generated from some battery cells (100) included in the battery pack (10), if the gas is below a specific temperature, especially if no thermal event occurs in the battery pack (10) or normal use is possible, the cover member (300) may not be opened.

[0084]

[0085] Meanwhile, as illustrated in FIG. 3 and the like, a pack case (200) included in a battery pack (10) according to one embodiment of the present invention may include a rib (R). The rib (R) may be configured to cover at least a portion of the venting portion (V). The rib (R) may be configured to support a cover member (300).

[0086] According to the above-described embodiment of the present invention, the area where the cover member (300) comes into contact with the pack case (200) is expanded, so that the state in which the cover member (300) is supported or adhered to the pack case (200) in the normal state of the battery pack (10) can be better maintained. As a result, moisture or dust, etc. can be more effectively prevented from penetrating into the pack case (200) by the cover member (300).

[0087] The rib (R) may be provided to cross the venting portion (V). In particular, the rib (R) may have a long shape extending from one end of the venting portion (V) to the other end. For example, the rib (R) may have a long shape extending from the left to the right of the hole forming the venting portion (V). In addition, the rib (R) may have a long shape extending from the top to the bottom of the hole forming the venting portion (V).

[0088] A plurality of ribs (R) may be provided in one venting portion (V). At this time, the extension directions of the plurality of ribs (R) may be different from each other. In particular, two ribs (R) are included in one venting portion (V), and the two ribs (R) may extend in the horizontal direction and the vertical direction, respectively. Furthermore, as in the embodiment illustrated in Fig. 2, the ribs (R) may be provided in a cross shape. Unlike the above embodiment, the size and area of the ribs (R) may be suitably designed depending on the composition of the gas.

[0089] According to the above-described embodiment of the present invention, the rib (R) can more stably support and protect the cover member (300). Moreover, in this case, large foreign substances can be effectively prevented from entering the inside of the pack case (200) through the venting portion (V) while damaging the cover member (300). Thus, safety can be ensured during the manufacture or use of the battery pack (10).

[0090]

[0091] The cover member (300) may be attached to one side of the pack case (200). According to one embodiment of the present invention, as illustrated in FIGS. 3 to 5, the cover member (300) may be attached to the outer surface of the pack case (200). According to the above-described exemplary configuration of the present invention, the cover member (300) may be opened more quickly to the outside of the pack case (200) by gas flowing to the outside of the pack case (200). In addition, since the cover member (300) may be attached only from the outside after the pack case (200) is completely assembled when manufacturing the battery pack (10), the assembling efficiency may be improved.

[0092] The edge of the cover member (300) may be attached to the pack case (200) along the perimeter of the venting portion (V). That is, the edge portion of the cover member (300) may be configured to be entirely adhered along the perimeter of the venting portion (V). At this time, the cover member (300) may be configured to be larger than the cross-sectional area of the venting portion (V) so as to completely cover the venting portion (V).

[0093] At this time, the cover member (300) may be provided in a circular shape. When the venting portion (V) and the cover member (300) are provided in a circular shape as in the above-described embodiment of the present invention, a uniform bonding area can be secured. In this case, the cover member (300) may not be easily released by gas at temperatures and pressures other than specific temperatures and pressures. In addition, the venting portion (V) or the cover member (300) can be prevented from being unintentionally damaged at a specific portion under normal or abnormal conditions.

[0094]

[0095] FIG. 6 is an enlarged cross-sectional view of a portion of a battery pack having a cover member according to another embodiment of the present invention.

[0096] According to another embodiment of the present invention, as illustrated in FIG. 6, the cover member (300) may be attached to the inner surface of the pack case (200) along the perimeter of the venting portion (V). At this time, the cover member (300) may be configured to directly face the rib (R).

[0097] Additionally, the cover member (300) may be configured to come into contact with the rib (R). For example, the rib (R) may be configured to protrude inwardly from the inner surface of the pack case (200). Accordingly, the distal end of the protruding portion of the rib (R) may be configured to come into contact with the cover member (300).

[0098] The rib (R) may include a portion whose thickness decreases toward the inner side of the pack case (200). For example, the rib (R) may include a portion whose thickness in the left-right direction and / or the up-down direction decreases toward the inner side of the pack case (200).

[0099] According to the above-described embodiment of the present invention, when an abnormal situation occurs in the battery pack (10), the rib (R) protrudes and can induce the cover member (300) to be more easily ruptured at the part where it comes into contact with the cover member (300).

[0100]

[0101] FIG. 7 is an enlarged perspective view of a main part of a battery pack according to another embodiment of the present invention.

[0102] The rib (R) may be provided to be inclined toward the outside of the pack case (200). Specifically, the rib (R) extending vertically may be provided to be inclined so that gas is discharged toward both sides of the pack case (200). That is, when the rib (R) is viewed from the upper side, the cross-section of the rib (R) may be provided to be inclined toward the outside of the pack case (200).

[0103] According to the above-described embodiment of the present invention, since the rib (R) is provided at an angle, the gas discharged by opening the cover member (300) can be guided toward the outer portion rather than the central portion of the pack case (200). In this case, the gas discharged from a certain venting portion (V) can be prevented from flowing back into the interior of the pack case (200) through another adjacent venting portion (V).

[0104]

[0105] FIG. 8 is a front view of a battery pack according to one embodiment of the present invention, and FIG. 9 is an enlarged view of a main part of a battery pack according to one embodiment of the present invention.

[0106] The venting portion (V) may include a plurality of venting holes (H) partitioned by ribs (R). For example, as shown in Fig. 9, the ribs (R) may be configured to be provided in a cross shape so that the venting holes (H) are partitioned into four.

[0107] At this time, the cover member (300) may be configured such that at least two of the plurality of venting holes (H) have different opening pressures or temperatures. According to the above-described embodiment of the present invention, the pressure or temperature at which the cover member (300) is opened is configured differently for each of the plurality of venting holes (H), thereby allowing the user to design the venting direction as desired. Accordingly, even in the same battery pack (10), the direction in which gas is discharged can be designed differently depending on the usage environment or location, thereby reducing costs and improving productivity.

[0108] For example, the cover member (300) may be provided with different thicknesses for at least two of the plurality of venting holes (H). That is, the thickness may be provided differently depending on the position of the venting hole (H) in one cover member (300). Multiple cover members (300) may be attached to only a portion of the cover member (300), or the thickness of the cover member (300) may be adjusted by manufacturing only a portion of the cover member (300) thick.

[0109] Accordingly, a relatively thick portion of the cover member (300) can be configured not to open even when a specific pressure or temperature is reached. For example, the thickness of the cover member (300) covering the venting hole (H) located at the upper portion among the plurality of venting holes (H) can be configured to be thick so that the venting hole (H) can be maintained in a closed state without being opened at a specific pressure or temperature. Accordingly, only the cover member (300) covering the venting hole (H) located at the lower portion can be opened due to rupture or the like, so that gas or the like can be vented downward.

[0110] Alternatively, unlike the above embodiment, the adhesive strength of the cover member (300) to be adhered to the pack case (200) may be provided differently. That is, the adhesive strength may be provided differently depending on the position of the venting hole (H) in one cover member (300). Accordingly, a portion of the cover member (300) with a relatively weak adhesive strength may open when a specific pressure or temperature is reached, and a portion with a relatively strong adhesive strength may not open even at a specific pressure or temperature. Accordingly, a user can adjust the adhesive strength of the cover member (300) to set the venting direction as desired.

[0111]

[0112] FIG. 10 is an enlarged view of a main part of a battery pack according to another embodiment of the present invention.

[0113] Referring to FIG. 10, a battery pack (10) according to another embodiment of the present invention may further include an opening / closing member (500). The opening / closing member (500) may be configured to open / close at least one of a plurality of venting holes (H). In other words, it may be configured to selectively open or close at least some of the plurality of venting holes (H).

[0114] The opening / closing member (500) may be provided in the pack case (200). Specifically, as illustrated in FIG. 10, the opening / closing member (500) may be provided on the outer surface of the pack case (200) and may be provided outside the rib (R) and the cover member (300).

[0115] According to the above-described embodiment of the present invention, the user can selectively adjust the number or position of the venting holes (H) through which gas is discharged through the opening / closing member (500), thereby venting gas in a desired direction.

[0116] The opening / closing member (500) may have any structure that can selectively open or close multiple venting holes (H). According to one embodiment, the opening / closing member (500) may include a case that is coupled to the pack case (200) to cover one venting hole (H) and a cover that is provided inside the case and is configured to be withdrawable to the outside of the case. The cover may be selectively provided inside the case to cover only one venting hole (H), or may be withdrawable to the outside of the case to cover at least one of the remaining venting holes (H). The cover may be provided with a protrusion to withdraw the cover outside the case.

[0117] For example, in one embodiment of the present invention, a plurality of venting parts (V) are provided, and among the plurality of venting parts (V), one of the venting parts (V) opens all of the opening / closing members (500) to allow a large amount of gas to be discharged, and another of the venting parts (V) closes all of the venting holes (H) by withdrawing the cover of the opening / closing member (500) to prevent the gas from being discharged to the outside. Accordingly, the venting direction can be freely adjusted by allowing the gas to be discharged only from the venting part (V) on the side where the opening / closing member (500) is opened.

[0118]

[0119] FIG. 11 is a front perspective view of a battery pack according to one embodiment of the present invention, and FIG. 12 is a rear perspective view of a battery pack according to one embodiment of the present invention.

[0120] Referring to FIG. 2, FIG. 11, and FIG. 12, etc., a pack case (200) according to one embodiment of the present invention may include a base plate (210) and a side plate (220).

[0121] The base plate (210) may be configured to allow a plurality of battery cells (100) to be mounted on its upper surface. The base plate (210) may form the lower surface of the pack case (200) and may be configured in a square plate shape. In addition, the base plate (210) may be provided with a flat upper surface so that the plurality of battery cells (100) may be stably mounted on it.

[0122] The side plate (220) may extend upward from each corner (edge) of the base plate (210). The side plate (220) may be provided with a plurality of unit walls to cover the side surfaces of a plurality of battery cells (100). More specifically, the side plate (220) may include a front plate (221) located at the -Y direction side end of the base plate (210) and configured to cover the front surfaces of the battery cells (100), a rear plate (222) located at the +Y direction side end and configured to cover the rear surfaces of the battery cells (100), and an end plate (223) located at the +X direction and -X direction side ends and configured to cover both sides of the battery cells (100).

[0123] The venting portion (V) may be provided on the side of the pack case (200), i.e., the side plate (220). At this time, the cover member (300) may be attached to the side plate (220) to cover the venting portion (V).

[0124] The venting portion (V) and the cover member (300) may each be provided in multiple numbers. In particular, the venting portion (V) may be located on at least some of the unit walls of the side plate (220). The venting portion (V) may be provided on both sides of the side plate (220). For example, referring to FIGS. 11 and 12 , the venting portion (V) may be provided on the front plate (221) and the rear plate (222), respectively.

[0125] In addition, the venting portions (V) may be formed separately on two or more unit walls, or two or more may be formed on one unit wall. A plurality of venting portions (V) may be provided on each of both sides of the side plate (220). For example, referring to FIGS. 11 and 12, two venting portions (V) may be provided on each of the front plate (221) and the rear plate (222).

[0126] At this time, a corresponding cover member (300) may be installed for each venting portion (V). For example, as shown in the exemplary configurations of FIGS. 11 and 12, two venting portions (V) are formed on each of the front plate (221) and the rear plate (222), and a separate cover member (300) is provided for each venting portion (V), so that a total of four cover members (300) may be included in the battery pack (10).

[0127] A plurality of venting portions (V) and cover members (300) may be arranged to be spaced apart from each other in a horizontal direction (e.g., left-right direction) in one unit wall. In addition, each of the plurality of venting portions (V) and cover members (300) may be arranged to be symmetrical with respect to the center of the front plate (221) and the rear plate (222).

[0128] According to the above-described embodiment of the present invention, in the event of an abnormal situation of the battery cell (100), high-temperature gas or the like can be discharged in both directions of the pack case (200) through the venting portions (V) symmetrically provided on both sides of the pack case (200). In particular, at the end where two venting portions (V) are located in one unit wall, electrode leads or empty spaces of a plurality of battery cells (100) can be located. This makes it easy to more quickly discharge gas generated from the battery cells and existing inside the pack case (200) to the outside of the pack case (200).

[0129] Meanwhile, the number and location of the venting portion (V) and the cover member (300) described based on the embodiments of FIG. 2, FIG. 11, and FIG. 12 are merely examples, and can be changed to various other numbers or locations.

[0130] In addition, at least some of the plurality of venting portions (V) may be provided with different sizes. For example, the sizes of the venting portions (V) provided on the front plate (221) and the sizes of the venting portions (V) provided on the rear plate (222) may be configured differently. Alternatively, the sizes of the venting portions (V) provided on the same front plate (221) or rear plate (222) may be configured differently.

[0131] A venting portion (V) having a relatively small size can increase the speed of gas discharge because the area through which gas is discharged is small. Accordingly, when a certain pressure or temperature is reached, the probability of the cover member (300) covering the venting portion (V) having a relatively small size opening increases, so that gas can be discharged toward the venting portion (V) having a relatively small size.

[0132] According to the above-described embodiment of the present invention, the user can set the direction in which gas is discharged based on the direction or location in which the battery pack (10) is installed. Accordingly, even within the same battery pack (10), the direction in which gas is discharged can be designed differently depending on the usage environment or location, thereby reducing costs and improving productivity.

[0133] For example, when the front side of the battery pack (10) is provided so that it faces the front, the area of the venting portion (V) provided on the rear plate (222) may be larger than the area of the venting portion (V) provided on the front plate (221). Accordingly, gas can be discharged more smoothly through the venting portion (V) provided on the rear plate (222), so that a user, etc. at the front of the battery pack (10) can be protected.

[0134]

[0135] Meanwhile, referring mainly to FIG. 1, FIG. 11 and FIG. 12, the pack case (200) may further include a top plate (230).

[0136] The top plate (230) may be configured to cover the upper portion of a plurality of battery cells (100). To this end, the top plate (230) may be provided to be coupled to the upper portion of the side plate (220) to form the upper surface of the pack case (200). The top plate (230) may protect components housed therein, such as the battery cells (100), and may prevent venting gases discharged from the battery cells (100) from being discharged to the outside of the pack case (200), particularly to the upper portion.

[0137] In particular, the top plate (230) can guide venting gas and sparks, etc., from the internal space of the pack case (200) toward the venting portion (V). Specifically, as indicated by the bold arrow in FIG. 5, the venting gas and the like can move toward the venting portion (V) along the upper inner surface of the pack case (200). The gas that has moved upwards can be guided toward the front plate (221) and the rear plate (222) where the venting portion (V) is provided, and can be discharged to the outside of the pack case (200) through the venting portion (V). Thus, according to the above-described exemplary configuration of the present invention, when an abnormal situation occurs in the battery pack (10), the gas generated in the battery cells (100) does not spread in all directions, but is quickly discharged to the outside through the venting portion (V), thereby preventing heat transmission between the battery cells (100).

[0138] Meanwhile, the top plate (230) and the base plate (210) may be provided to protrude outwardly more than the side plate (220). For example, as illustrated in FIGS. 5, 11, and 12, the top plate (230) and the base plate (210) may be provided to protrude outwardly more than the front plate (221) and the rear plate (222).

[0139] According to the above-described embodiment of the present invention, when an abnormal situation occurs in the battery pack (10), the cover member (300) is opened, and the gas discharged through the venting portion (V) can be prevented from moving to the upper or lower part of the battery pack (10). Accordingly, when a plurality of battery packs (10) of the present invention are included in another device, heat can be prevented from being transmitted to adjacent battery packs (10).

[0140]

[0141] Meanwhile, the battery pack (10) according to one embodiment of the present invention may further include a cooling unit (400). The cooling unit (400) may be configured to allow a cooling medium to flow. Specifically, the cooling unit (400) may include an inlet port (410) and a discharge port (420). The inlet port (410) may be configured to allow a cooling medium to flow into the pack case (200), and the discharge port (420) may be configured to allow the cooling medium to flow out of the pack case (200).

[0142] The inlet port (410) and the discharge port (420) may be provided on one side of the pack case (200). For example, as illustrated in FIG. 11, the inlet port (410) and the discharge port (420) may be provided on the side where the front plate (221) is located. At this time, the cover member (300) may be provided on the side of the pack case (200) where the cooling unit (400) is located.

[0143] A hose through which a cooling medium flows may be connected to the inlet port (410) and the outlet port (420). According to the above-described embodiment of the present invention, since the cover member (300) is provided in a part where condensation is likely to occur due to the cooling medium, moisture generated due to condensation can be prevented from flowing into the interior of the pack case (200).

[0144]

[0145] FIG. 13 is a drawing illustrating a state in which a venting device is separated from a pack case in a battery pack according to another embodiment of the present invention, and FIG. 14 is an enlarged perspective view illustrating a portion of a battery pack according to another embodiment of the present invention in which a venting device is provided. In addition, FIG. 15 is a cross-sectional view illustrating a closed state of a venting device in a battery pack according to another embodiment of the present invention. And, FIG. 16 is a cross-sectional view illustrating a form in which a venting device in a battery pack according to another embodiment of the present invention is open. For example, FIGS. 15 and 16 may be drawings illustrating a portion of the front side of the cross-section taken along line I-I' of FIG. 1.

[0146] A battery pack (10) according to one embodiment of the present invention may include a venting device (600). The venting device (600) may be mounted on a pack case (200). The venting device (600) may be configured to be mounted on a venting portion (V).

[0147] The venting device (600) may be coupled to one side of the side plate (220). For example, the venting device (600) may be coupled to the outer surface of the side plate (220). In this case, the venting device (600) may be bolted to the outer surface of the side plate (220). In the above embodiment, the size of the venting device (600) may be provided to be smaller than the size of the venting portion (V), so that the venting device (600) may be configured to completely cover the venting portion (V). According to the above-described exemplary configuration of the present invention, instead of assembling the venting device (600) inside the complex pack case (200), productivity can be increased by assembling the venting device (600) from the outside after the pack case (200) is completed.

[0148] Additionally, the venting device (600) may be configured to be openable. Specifically, as shown in FIG. 15, the venting device (600) may remain closed without opening when the pressure is below a certain pressure, and as shown in FIG. 16, the venting device (600) may be configured to open only when a thermal event occurs in the battery pack (10) and the pressure of the gas is above a certain pressure.

[0149] The venting device (600) may be configured to open due to gas pressure to discharge gas generated from the battery cells (100) housed therein to the outside of the pack case (200). According to the above-described embodiment of the present invention, when an abnormal situation occurs in the battery pack (10), the venting device (600) is opened as indicated by the bold arrow in FIG. 16, so that the gas generated from the battery cells (100) can be smoothly discharged to the outside of the pack case (200) through the opened portion of the venting device (600). Accordingly, when an abnormal situation occurs in the battery cells (100), the internal pressure inside the pack case (200) is prevented from increasing, and additional chain fires of other battery cells (100) can be prevented. Therefore, according to the above-described aspect of the present invention, the safety and reliability of the battery pack (10) can be guaranteed.

[0150] In addition, according to the above-described embodiment of the present invention, when the venting gas is completely discharged outside the pack case (200), the inflow of oxygen into the pack case (200) can be blocked by the closed venting device (600). As a result, the generation of a flame in the battery pack (10) can be prevented or suppressed.

[0151] And, according to the above-described embodiment of the present invention, the venting gas discharged to the outside can be prevented from flowing back into the pack case (200).

[0152]

[0153] Specifically, referring to FIG. 16, when a thermal event occurs in the battery pack (10) and the pressure of the gas inside the battery pack (10) becomes higher than a specific pressure, the venting device (600) may be configured to open in one direction due to the pressure of the gas generated in the battery cell (100). Specifically, the venting device (600) may be configured to open in only one direction, and the one direction may be defined as a direction from the inside of the pack case (200) toward the outside (outer direction of the pack case (200).

[0154] According to the above-described embodiment of the present invention, the gas inside the pack case (200) can be induced to vent in a specific direction, i.e., toward the outside of the pack case (200), by the venting device (600) that opens in only one direction. In addition, according to the above-described embodiment of the present invention, the gas discharged to the outside of the pack case (200) can be prevented from flowing back into the inside of the pack case (200).

[0155] Meanwhile, the present invention is not limited by the specific type or shape of the venting device (600) as long as the venting device (600) has directionality, and various venting devices (600) known at the time of filing of the present invention can be employed to configure the battery pack (10) of the present invention.

[0156]

[0157] FIG. 17 is a drawing illustrating a venting device of a battery pack according to another embodiment of the present invention.

[0158] The detailed structure of the venting device (600) is described with further reference to FIG. 17 together with FIG. 15 and FIG. 16. The venting device (600) may include a mounting portion (610), a cover portion (620), and a hinge portion (630).

[0159] The mounting portion (610) may be coupled to the pack case (200). As described above, the mounting portion (610) may be inserted into the venting portion (V) of the pack case (200) or coupled to one side of the pack case (200) so that the venting device (600) may be mounted on the pack case (200). A discharge hole (611) through which venting gas is discharged may be formed in the mounting portion (610). That is, the mounting portion (610) may be provided in a ring shape.

[0160] The cover part (620) may be configured to cover the discharge hole (611). The cover part (620) may be provided in a plate shape. The cover part (620) may be provided by being coupled to the mounting part (610). The cover part (620) may be provided on the inner side of the mounting part (610) so as to be mounted on the mounting part (610).

[0161] The venting device (600) has a hinge portion (630), by which the cover portion (620) can be coupled to the mounting portion (610). The hinge portion (630) can be configured to be rotatable on one side of the cover portion (620). As a result, the cover portion (620) can be configured to be rotatable. In addition, the hinge portion (630) can be provided with an elastic body having elasticity or can be implemented with such an elastic body.

[0162] According to the above-described embodiment of the present invention, in a normal state where no thermal event occurs in the battery pack (10), the cover portion (620) can be maintained to cover the discharge hole (611) by the elastic force of the hinge portion (630). In addition, the venting device (600) may not be opened by external force or vibration acting on the battery pack (10).

[0163] Meanwhile, when a thermal event occurs in the battery pack (10), the cover portion (620) may be configured to open in one direction due to the pressure of the gas. That is, when the internal pressure exceeds a certain pressure due to the gas inside the pack case (200), the internal pressure becomes greater than the elastic force of the hinge portion (630) to maintain the closed state, so that the hinge portion (630) may rotate, thereby opening the cover portion (620). To this end, the elastic coefficient or material of the hinge portion (630) may be designed to open when the pressure exceeds the certain pressure.

[0164] According to the above-described embodiment of the present invention, the cover part (620) is normally kept closed to maintain the waterproofing and dustproofing performance of the battery pack (10) as well as the prevention of foreign matter intrusion, while when a thermal event occurs, the cover part (620) is opened to prevent heat accumulation inside the battery pack (10).

[0165] Referring to FIGS. 15 and 17, the mounting portion (610) may include an inclined portion (612). The inclined portion (612) may be provided to be inclined downward from the edge of the discharge hole (611). According to the above-described embodiment of the present invention, when the cover portion (620) is opened when a specific pressure is exceeded, the opening operation of the cover portion (620) is not hindered by the mounting portion (610), or the inclined portion (612) may guide the opening direction of the cover portion (620).

[0166]

[0167] FIG. 18 is a drawing illustrating a venting device of a battery pack according to another embodiment of the present invention.

[0168] Referring to Fig. 18, the venting device (600) may further include an inner sealing member (640). The inner sealing member (640) may be provided along the perimeter of the discharge hole (611). The inner sealing member (640) may be provided between the cover portion (620) and the mounting portion (610). The inner sealing member (640) may be made of an elastic material such as silicone.

[0169] According to the above-described embodiment of the present invention, since the inner sealing member (640) is provided, when the cover part (310) is not opened at the mounting part (610), gas leakage into the space between the cover part (620) and the mounting part (610) can be fundamentally prevented.

[0170]

[0171] FIG. 19 is a drawing illustrating a venting device of a battery pack according to another embodiment of the present invention.

[0172] Referring to Fig. 19, the venting device (600) may further include a catch protrusion (650). The catch protrusion (650) may be provided to protrude upward from the mounting portion (610). At this time, the cover portion (620) may be provided on the inner side of the catch protrusion (650). Accordingly, according to the above-described embodiment of the present invention, since the cover portion (620) is fixed by the catch protrusion (650) in a closed state, the cover portion (620) may be prevented from being easily opened when the pressure is below a certain level or when vibration occurs.

[0173] The catch (650) may be made of an elastic material. According to the above-described embodiment of the present invention, when the cover part (620) is opened, the catch may be bent outward, thereby releasing the fixing of the cover part (620). Alternatively, the catch (650) may be released from fixing the cover part (620) by being broken.

[0174] Alternatively, unlike the above embodiment, the catch (650) can protrude outward from the mounting portion (610) to fix the cover portion (620) when the cover portion (620) covers the discharge hole (611), and at a certain pressure, the catch (650) can move inward of the mounting portion (610) so that the cover portion (620) can be opened. Accordingly, when the cover portion (620) is opened, the catch (650) can be released from fixing the cover portion (620).

[0175]

[0176] FIG. 20 is a front view of a main part of a battery pack to which a cover member is applied according to another embodiment of the present invention, FIG. 21 is a cross-sectional view of a battery pack to which a cover member is applied according to another embodiment of the present invention, and FIG. 22 is a cross-sectional view showing a form in which a cover member of a battery pack according to another embodiment of the present invention is opened.

[0177] The cover member (300) may be configured to cover the venting device (600). This cover member (300) may be attached to the pack case (200). The cover member (300) may be attached to the outside of the venting device (600). That is, the cover member (300) may be configured to be attached to the pack case (200) and cover at least a portion of the venting device (600). At this time, as illustrated in FIG. 20, the width of the cover member (300) may be configured to be larger than the width of the venting device (600) so as to completely cover the venting device (600) in the horizontal direction. Alternatively, the cover member (300) may be attached to the venting device (600), for example, the mounting portion (610).

[0178] According to the above-described embodiment of the present invention, the cover member (300) prevents the venting device (600) from being easily opened, so that the venting device (600) may not be easily opened by gas at a temperature and pressure other than a specific temperature and pressure.

[0179] Referring to FIGS. 21 and 22, the cover member (300) may be configured to remain attached to the pack case (200) to cover the venting device (600) under normal circumstances, but to open under specific circumstances. Specifically, the cover member (300) may be configured to open together with the venting device (600) when the pressure inside the pack case (200) reaches a specific pressure. For example, as illustrated in FIG. 22, the cover member (300) may be opened by being released from its attachment to the pack case (200) and detached.

[0180] According to the above-described embodiment of the present invention, moisture is prevented from penetrating into the battery pack (10) normally, but when an abnormal situation occurs in the battery pack (10), the venting device (600) and the cover member (300) are opened as indicated by the bold arrow in FIG. 22, so that the gas generated in the battery cell (100) can be smoothly discharged to the outside of the pack case (200) through the open portion of the venting device (600).

[0181] Accordingly, when an abnormal situation occurs in the battery cell (100), the internal pressure inside the pack case (200) is prevented from increasing, and additional chain fires in other battery cells (100) can be prevented. Therefore, according to the above aspect of the present invention, the safety and reliability of the battery pack (10) can be guaranteed.

[0182]

[0183] FIG. 23 is a front view of a main part of a battery pack to which a cover member is applied according to another embodiment of the present invention, and FIG. 24 is a cross-sectional view showing a form in which the cover member of a battery pack according to another embodiment of the present invention is opened.

[0184] According to another embodiment of the present invention, as in the embodiments illustrated in FIGS. 23 and 24, the cover member (300) may have a break line (310). The break line (310) may be formed along a portion where the venting device (600) is opened. For example, the break line (310) may be formed along the perimeter of the cover portion (620) of the venting device (600).

[0185] Accordingly, as illustrated in FIG. 16, when the pressure inside the pack case (200) reaches a certain pressure and the venting device (600) is opened, the cover member (300) is broken along the break line (310) so that it can be opened more easily.

[0186] According to the above-described embodiment of the present invention, even when the cover member (300) is provided to correspond to the area of the venting device (600) or when the adhesive strength of the cover member (300) is strong, the cover member (300) can be easily broken so that gas can be quickly discharged to the outside.

[0187]

[0188] FIG. 25 is a cross-sectional view showing a form in which a cover member of a battery pack is opened according to another embodiment of the present invention.

[0189] Alternatively, as in the embodiment illustrated in FIG. 25, the venting device (600) may be formed with a protrusion (660) configured to protrude toward the cover member (300). The protrusion (660) may be provided at the lower end of the cover member (620). The protrusion (660) may be provided such that at least a portion of the cover member (620) protrudes.

[0190] According to the above-described embodiment of the present invention, when the pressure inside the pack case (200) reaches a specific pressure and the venting device (600) is opened, a force is applied to push the protrusion (660) toward the cover member (300), so that the cover member (300) can be easily broken corresponding to the area where the venting device (600) is opened. As a result, gas can be discharged more quickly to the outside of the pack case (200).

[0191]

[0192] An ESS (Energy Storage System) according to one embodiment of the present invention includes a battery pack (10) according to the present invention. The ESS may include, for example, a battery container including a plurality of battery packs (10) and a container housing configured so that the plurality of battery packs (10) can be stacked therein. The ESS may include one or more such battery systems.

[0193] In addition, the present invention may include various battery systems including a battery pack (10) according to the present invention. For example, a battery charging system, a battery exchange system, a battery repair system, etc. according to the present invention may be battery systems according to the present invention.

[0194]

[0195] Additionally, the present invention may include a vehicle comprising a battery pack (10) according to the present invention. The vehicle according to the present invention may be, for example, an electric vehicle, a hybrid vehicle, or a plug-in hybrid vehicle. The vehicle may include a four-wheel vehicle and a two-wheel vehicle. The vehicle may operate by receiving power from the battery pack (10) according to one embodiment of the present invention.

[0196]

[0197] Although the preferred embodiments of the present invention have been illustrated and described above, the present invention is not limited to the specific embodiments described above, and various modifications may be made by those skilled in the art without departing from the spirit or scope of the present invention as claimed in the claims. Furthermore, such modifications should not be understood individually from the technical idea or prospect of the present invention.
