Description

SYSTEMS, METHODS, APPARATUSES, AND TECHNOLOGIES FOR DEPLOYING A DRONE TO PRESENT ALERTS AND / OR COLLECT SENSOR DATA IN CONNECTION WITH A VEHICLEFIELD OF THE INVENTION

[0001] The field relates to deploying drones to present alerts for a vehicle.BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION

[0002] In certain situations, vehicles can encounter operational issues, e.g., powertrain malfunctions or degradation caused by impact, that can result in the vehicle stopping or driving at a substantially slower speed than nearby traffic. This can occur in both human operated vehicles and in autonomously operated vehicles. Traditionally, in such situations, a driver might leave the vehicle and deploy different indicators, e.g., lights, flares, warning triangles, or the like. However, this is not always possible or practical. For example, if an autonomous vehicle encounters operational issues, a human operator may not be present to deploy such indicators. Or, alternatively, if a human operator is present, e.g., to operate the vehicle or to simply provide a back-up to autonomous operation, the vehicle might be required to stop at a location where it is impractical or difficult for a driver to leave the vehicle and deploy the indicators.SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION

[0003] This summary is intended to introduce a selection of concepts in a simplified form that are further described below in the detailed description section of this disclosure. This summary is not intended to identify key or essential features of the claimed subject matter, nor is it intended to be used as an aid in isolation to determine the scope of the claimed subject matter.

[0004] In brief, and at a high level, this disclosure describes, among other things, systems, methods, apparatuses, and technologies for transporting, deploying, and operating a drone in connection with a vehicle. The operation of the drone can include selecting, presenting, and / or deploying one or more alerts or alert indicators in connection with the vehicle, obtaining sensor feedback that can be used to direct operation of the drone and / or the vehicle, and / or otherwise supporting operation of the vehicle including while it is at least partially disabled, e.g., due to malfunction, damage, or another operational issue.

[0005] In embodiments, a control system receives an indication (e.g., sensor feedback or another signal) that indicates a vehicle is at least partially disabled, e.g., due to failure, degradation, impact, or another operational issue, and in response, a drone is deployed to support the vehicle. The deployed drone can be operated to a position offset from the vehicle, and then operated to select and / or present one or more alerts (e.g., signals, notifications, messages, and / or communications) and / or alert indicators (e.g., physical objects that present distinct and detectable indications) to help increase visibility for the associated vehicle and / or help notify and direct approaching traffic. In embodiments, sensor feedback from a deployed drone can be used to direct the drone and / or to direct the vehicle. For example, in embodiments, sensor data from a deployed drone can be used to help guide a vehicle to a location that is less exposed or obstructing. In embodiments, a deployed drone can also be used to assist a vehicle with backing-up or otherwise repositioning in instances where the vehicle has limited visibility, e.g., via its sensors, in at least one direction. The drones, deployment systems, and control systems described herein can be used with vehicles that are human operated and / or with vehicles that are at least partially or fully autonomously operated, among other applications.

[0006] Drones as discussed herein can include unmanned aerial vehicles (“UAVs”), unmanned terrestrial vehicles (“UTVs”), and / or other ty pes of unmanned or primarily unmanned devices / equipment that can operate, e.g., travel to different locations and perform different functions, at least partially independently, e.g., without continuous control inputs from a human operator. The drones described herein can be integrated, deployed, and / or operated in connection with both human operated vehicles (e.g., trucks driven by a human operator) and / or in connection with autonomously operated vehicles (e.g., trucks driven by no human operator, or with only a backup human operator, or with only a remote human operator). The drones described herein can be operated by a control system that can include one or more processors, memories, and / or communication components as well as instructions stored in non- transitory memory that can be executed by the processor(s) to control operation of the drone in different operational circumstances. The control system components described herein can be localized and / or distributed. For example, control system components can be integrated into a drone, into an associated vehicle, and / or into a remote control station distinct from the drone and the associated vehicle, in embodiments.

[0007] In embodiments, a drone is stored in a drone enclosure (e.g., a pod or housing) that is attached to a vehicle. In response to an indication of a particular operational condition (e.g., a reduced or disabled operational state of the associated vehicle) a control system can deployand operate the drone to present one or more alerts and / or alert indicators related to the vehicle, and / or collect sensor data to assess the operational condition. The drone, or in embodiments, multiple drones, can be deployed to different positions. In embodiments, a drone can be deployed to a position rearward / forward of an associated vehicle, to a location lateral of the vehicle, to a location between the vehicle and approaching traffic (e.g., to a location intended to intercept approaching traffic), and / or to a location determined to have a higher visibility / detectability than other locations (e.g., a location before a curve or before a rise in the roadway or at an elevated position that is more visible). The drone, once in position, can present one or more alerts using associated alert-generating components and / or can select, release, and / or deploy different alert indicators to support an associated vehicle. The drone can also collect sensor data and communicate sensor feedback to a vehicle control system associated with the vehicle and / or to a remote control station.

[0008] The drones herein can include components that can generate different types of alerts. For example, the drones can include components that can present visual or audible alerts and / or that can release, deploy, and / or disburse distinct, physical alert indicators. For example, in an embodiment, a drone can include one or more display components, e.g., screens, displays, message boards, tickers, lighting arrays, and the like, which can present visual alerts. In embodiments, a drone can include one or more noise-generating components (e.g., speakers) that can generate audible alert indicators. In embodiments, a drone can include an alertdeployment system that includes alert indicators that can be released, deployed, dropped, and / or disbursed from the drone so that such indicators can present alerts at distinct locations spaced from the drone and / or from the associated vehicle. For example, such alert indicators can include lights (e.g., static lights or lights that emit a sequence of flashes), visually- distinctive elements (e.g., warning triangles, signs, cones, flags, reflectors, flares, and the like) including those that have high color-contrast, reflectivity, retro-reflectivity, or similar detection characteristics.

[0009] The drones described herein can include one or more sensors (e.g., optical sensors, light detection and ranging “LIDAR” sensors, radar sensors, global positioning system (“GPS”) sensors, and the like) that can capture sensor data during operation of the drone. The captured sensor data can be associated with approaching objects (e.g., vehicles, traffic, people, and the like) and / or with terrain topology, terrain geography, visibility , light conditions, road conditions, traffic vectors, traffic density, weather conditions, and the like. In embodiments, captured sensor data may be used at least in part to help direct movement of an associatedvehicle (e.g., that is partially disabled or operating with reduced capability). For example, a control system of an associated vehicle can use communicated sensor data to help direct the vehicle to a location that is less exposed, obstructing, or otherwise undesirable, e.g., a location that is farther from a path of traffic and / or behind one or more objects that at least partially shield the vehicle from approaching traffic.

[0010] The systems, methods, apparatuses, and technologies described herein for transporting, deploying, and operating a drone in connection with one or more vehicles can be used to increase visibility and reduce exposure for vehicles that are disabled and / or partially disabled near traffic and roadways and / or can help control and direct vehicles in such operational circumstances, and can also allow for assessing a vehicle’s condition and operational circumstances from an external viewpoint as needed, among other benefits.BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWINGS

[0023] This detailed description is provided in order to meet statutory requirements. However, this description is not intended to limit the scope of the invention described herein. Rather, the disclosed subject matter may be embodied in other ways to include different steps, different combinations of steps, different elements, and / or different combinations of elements, similar to those described in this disclosure, and in conjunction with other present or future technologies and solutions. Moreover, although the terms “step” and “block” may be used herein to identify different elements of methods emplo ed, the terms should not be interpreted as implying any particular order among or between the different elements unless the order is explicitly stated.

[0024] In general, disclosed herein are systems, methods, apparatuses, and technologies that allow for deploying, operating, and controlling a drone in connection with a vehicle. In embodiments, a deployed drone can be used to present one or more alerts in connection with a vehicle that is at least partially disabled or operating with reduced capability. In embodiments, a deployed drone can be used to direct operation of a vehicle that is at least partially disabled or operating with reduced capability, e.g., using sensor data / feedback communicated from the drone. The embodiments described herein can be used with vehicles that are human operated and / or with vehicles that are at least partially or fully autonomously operated, as describedherein in connection with attached FIGS. 1-11 that depict non-limiting examples of the present subject matter.

[0025] In an embodiment, a drone is transported along with a vehicle (e.g., a car, truck, or other form of mobile transport), and in response to a particular operational condition (e.g., a reduced or disabled operational state of the vehicle), the drone can be deployed and operated to present one or more alerts in connection with the vehicle to help notify approaching traffic of the vehicle’s operational condition and presence. Methods, systems, technologies, and instructions stored on one or more non-transitory computer-readable media executable by one or more computer processors that enable operation of a drone in this fashion are also provided herein. In embodiments, these methods, technologies, and instructions can be used by one or more control systems associated with a drone, with a vehicle, and / or with a remote control station distinct from the drone and the vehicle. In embodiments, the drone, vehicle, and / or remote control station can communicate wirelessly, e.g., using one or more wireless communication protocols, components, and systems.

[0026] To describe one example scenario, a vehicle encounters an operational condition. In response to an indication of the operational condition, a drone is deployed from a pod enclosure located on the vehicle. In embodiments, the operational condition can be associated with degradation, failure, and / or malfunction of a vehicle component and / or system. This can include the drive-train or power-train (e.g., electric or combustion), wheels (e.g., tires or axles), steenng (e.g., steering column or motor(s)), control systems, and / or power supplies (e.g., batteries and / or fuel supply systems), among other things. The operational condition can additionally or alternatively be associated with damage to the vehicle, e.g., due to a collision or impact, among other things. In embodiments, the operational condition can be associated with other additional or alternative issues, e.g., theft or hijacking of the vehicle, problems with cargo (e.g., a cargo fire or spilled cargo), and / or the vehicle being stuck due to external conditions (e.g., mud, snow, ice, flooding, and the like), e.g., as indicated by the vehicle being determined to have no traction / forward speed. These operational conditions can result in the vehicle being stationary' with respect to surrounding traffic or cause the vehicle to travel at a substantially slower speed than surrounding traffic. In such instances, additional alerts, indications, and signals of the vehicle’s presence, condition, and movements provided through deployment and operation of a drone can be beneficial.

[0027] In embodiments, a drone deployed from a vehicle can present different types of alerts. For example, the drones described herein can be configured to present visual, audible.and / or physical -based alerts. In an embodiment, a drone can include one or more display components, e.g., screens, displays, and / or message boards (e.g., a mini-matrix message board), that is / are used to present visual alerts. In another embodiment, a drone can include one or more noise-generating components (e.g., speakers or signal devices) that can generate audible alerts. In another embodiment, a drone can include physically-deployable alert indicators that can be released, deployed, dropped, and / or ejected from the drone to present alerts at one or multiple locations spaced from the drone and / or from the associated vehicle. For example, physically-deployable alert indicators can include lights (e.g., static or flashing lights), visually-distinctive indicators (e.g., high-contrast warning triangles, cones, flags, reflectors, and the like), flares, beacons, sound-emitting devices, and / or other similar components that can be used to signal approaching people, vehicles, and traffic.

[0028] In embodiments, a drone can present different visual alerts. For example, a message of “CAUTION,” “SLOW,” “ACCIDENT,” or “DISABLED VEHICLE,” among others can be displayed on a message board, screen, and / or other display component on a deployed drone. Accordingly, in embodiments, a particular visual message may be selected based on the operational condition detected. For example, a first operational condition may correspond to a first message, a second operational condition may correspond to a second message, and so on. In another embodiment, one or more physically-deployable alert indicators (e.g., high-contrast signs, warning triangles, cones, flags, reflectors, or flares / lights) can be released (e.g., ejected, dropped, or placed in sequence at different locations) from the drone. In another embodiment, one or more audible indications, e.g., sounds, messages, warnings, and the like, can be provided by the deployed drone. The alerts provided by a drone can be especially useful in circumstances where a vehicle is stopped on a road or shoulder in an obscured area where it is harder for the vehicle to be noticed or detected by approaching traffic, e.g., just beyond a curve in a roadway and / or just over a hill or rise in a roadway. In embodiments, a visual alert, or a combination of visual alerts, may be based on the particular operational condition detected by sensors of the vehicle, such that an appropriate response is initiated. For example, in response to one condition, just a visual message may be displayed. In response to another condition, both a visual message as well as deployment of one or more physically-deployable alert indicators, can be selected. Selection may be made via the vehicle control system, in embodiments, and communicated to the drone. In other embodiments, the vehicle controller may transmit data acquired by one or more vehicle sensors indicating a particular operational condition to thedrone, and the drone control system may carry out a selection process to determine what visual alert or combination thereof, to present / deploy.

[0029] In embodiments, a drone may include one or more sensors (e.g., optical sensors, LIDAR sensors, radar sensors, GPS sensors, or other types of sensors along with supporting technology). The sensors can be adapted or configured to capture sensor data such as, for example, data related to surrounding traffic (e.g., vehicles, including their relative speed, direction, and acceleration), weather conditions (e.g., snow, fog, rain, and the like), terrain topology (e.g., including visibility in one or more directions), the position of the drone (e.g., relative to the vehicle, terrain, and / or approaching traffic), and / or the position of the vehicle (e.g., relative to the drone, terrain, or approaching traffic). In an embodiment, captured sensor data can be wirelessly transmitted to the vehicle and then can be used by its vehicle control system to direct operation / movement of the vehicle. For example, the captured sensor data, including terrain topology data, may indicate that the vehicle is positioned immediately beyond a curve or a rise in the roadway where visibility of the vehicle is at least partially obscured. Based on this, the vehicle control system may initiate, to the extent possible based on the operational condition, movement of the vehicle to a new location that is less obscured or exposed (e.g., further off a shoulder, in an area of higher visibility, or the like). In embodiments, the captured sensor data can be used to modify (e.g., update or augment) existing data, e.g., map data such as high-resolution map data, e.g., used by the vehicle and / or the drone. For example, captured sensor data associated with terrain topography, road routes, road conditions (e.g., traffic, road construction, road closures), and / or weather conditions (e.g., snow, fog, rain, flooding, and the like) can be used to modify high-resolution map data used by drones or vehicles. In embodiments, this modified data can be used by multiple vehicles that communicate over a connected network, e.g., a fleet management system, among other things.

[0030] In embodiments, captured sensor data from a drone may be used to determine a position for the drone with respect to the vehicle. For example, captured sensor data related to terrain topology and / or road contours may indicate that an associated vehicle is positioned beyond a curve or beyond a hill or rise in the roadway such that the vehicle is at least partially obscured from approaching traffic. Based on this, the drone may position or re-position at a location that is before the curve or before the hill or where the rise in the roadway begins in order to more effectively and in a timelier manner alert incoming traffic of the presence of the associated vehicle. In embodiments, this same data may be used to determine a location for release of the physically-deployable alert indicators. For example, a location where the groundis flat and level may be selected for release of the physically-deployable alert indicators. This and other data can also be used to determine what type of physically-deployable alert indicator should be released. In embodiments, optical data indicating that low-light conditions exist may be used to determine that one or more lights, flares, and / or reflectors should be released from the drone. In embodiments, optical data indicating that bright-light conditions exist may be used to determine that one or more high-contrast signs, reflectors, or flags should be released from the drone. These examples are intended to be non-limiting, and other types of physically- deployable alert indicators are contemplated herein.

[0031] In additional or alternative embodiments, based on communication between the drone and the associated vehicle and / or based on sensor data captured by the drone and / or by the associated vehicle, a message may be selected to be displayed on the drone, e.g., on a screen or a message board (e g., a mini-matrix message board) attached to the drone. For example, if the vehicle is still moving but at a substantially slower speed compared to nearby traffic, “SLOW MOVING VEHICLE” or a similar message may be selected and displayed on the drone. In another example, when terrain topology data indicates that the vehicle is positioned beyond a curve in the roadway, “DISABLED VEHICLE BEYOND CURVE” or a similar message may be selected and displayed by the drone, and when terrain topology data indicates that the vehicle is positioned beyond a hill or rise in the roadway, “DISABLED VEHICLE BEYOND HILL” or a similar message may be selected and displayed by the drone. In embodiments, a default “CAUTION” or “WARNING HAZARD AHEAD” message may be displayed. It should be understood that many different messages may be selected for display, e.g., either generically and / or based on specific conditions identified by the drone and / or the associated vehicle, and these are only intended to be examples.

For example, the vehicle control system 110 may include navigation / guidance systems used to control the vehicle 100 (e.g., during autonomous operation) and / or used to control a deployed drone via a control system integrated with the drone with which the vehicle control system 110 communicates. In addition, a control system associated with a remote control station can include navigation / guidance systems that can control the vehicle 100 (e.g., when not operating autonomously) and / or that can control the drone (e.g., when not operating autonomously).

[0044] Looking now at FIG. 3, a system 300 that includes a vehicle 310, a drone 312, and a remote control station 314 connected over a network 316 is shown, in accordance with embodiments of the present disclosure. The system 300 is represented generically in FIG. 3 for clarity, simplicity, and explanation purposes. However, in actual implementation, additional and / or more fully -formed components, systems, and technologies in addition to those depicted in FIG. 3 may be incorporated and used to support the operations described in connection with FIG. 3. In addition, the system 300 is intended to represent only one example configuration, and is not intended to be limiting. For example, in embodiments, there may be a plurality of drones (e.g., UAVs and / or UTVs) that can be deployed in connection with the vehicle 310,and / or in embodiments, a remote control station 314 may be omitted and only the drone(s) and vehicle(s) may be used in connection with the system 300.

[0045] The network 316 shown in FIG. 3 allows the vehicle 310, the drone 312, and the remote control station 314 to communicate, e.g., send data, feedback, signals, and / or instructions between each other. The network 316 may include or use, without limitation, local area networks (“LANs”) and / or wide area networks (“WANs”). The network 316 may include internet and / or cellular netw orks, and / or other public and / or private networks. In embodiments, the network 316 may include direct hard-wired communication connections. In embodiments, the network 316 may include short-range and / or long-range communication technologies, e.g., including infrared (“IR”), Bluetooth, and radio, among others.

[0046] The dotted line 318 shown in FIG. 3 represents a wireless communication connection between the vehicle 310 and the drone 312. In embodiments, the drone 312 and the vehicle 310 can communicate directly through the communication connection 318 (e.g., using a radio or cellular connection). In embodiments, the drone 312 and the vehicle 310 can communicate through the network 316 via a communications connection represented by dotted line 315 and dotted line 320. The dotted line 315 represents a wireless communications connection between the drone 312 and the network 316, and the dotted line 320 represents a wireless communications connection between the vehicle 310 and the network 316. These communication connections 315, 320 allow for communication over the network 318. In embodiments, the drone 312 can additionally or alternatively communicate with the remote control station 314 through a wireless communications connection represented by dotted line 322. For example, in embodiments, the drone 312 may communicate directly with the remote control station 314 to provide feedback and receive instructions for operating, and in such instances, may bypass the vehicle 310 from which the drone 312 has been deployed. In embodiments, this bypassing can occur when the vehicle 310 is disabled and control of the drone 312 has been transferred to the remote control station 314.

[0047] The vehicle 310 shown in FIG. 3 can be one that is human operated, one that is autonomously operated, or one that is configured to be human operated and autonomously operated (locally or remotely) depending on the operational configuration. The vehicle 310 can include a drone enclosure 310a. The drone enclosure 310a can be configured to support / store the drone 312 and in addition allow the drone 312 to be deployed based on the vehicle 310 encountering an operational condition or particular condition that is suitable for assistance from the drone 312. The vehicle 310 can include a control system 310b that includes a vehiclecontroller 310c and a drone controller 310d. In embodiments, the vehicle controller 310c can be configured to control and operate the vehicle 310 (e.g., including its powertrain, steering, navigation, and / or communication sub-systems), including during autonomous operation of the vehicle 310. In embodiments, the drone controller 310d can be configured to control and operate the drone 312, e.g., including its deployment, positioning, capturing of sensor data, and / or presenting of alerts or alert indicators. In embodiments, the drone controller 310d can direct operation of the sub-systems of the drone 312, including the propulsion system(s), guidance system(s), communication system(s), sensor(s), and / or other components that enable the drone 312 to perform its associated functions and operations. This controlling of the drone 312 can be provided via communication between the drone controller 310d and the drone control system 312c shown in FIG. 3.

[0048] Looking still at FIG. 3, the drone 312 can be aerial-based (e.g., being a UAV) or ground-based (e.g., being a UTV). The drone 312 is configured to be deployed from the vehicle 310, e g., from the drone enclosure 310a thereon. This deployment can be triggered in response to an indication, e.g., from the vehicle control system 310b, that the vehicle 310 is encountering an operational condition or a particular condition suitable for assistance from the drone 312. In embodiments, the drone 312 can include one or more sensors 312a, a communication system 312b, and / or a control system 312c that includes a drone controller 312d. The sensor(s) 312a can include optical sensors, radar sensors, LIDAR sensors, location-tracking sensors such as GPS sensors, temperature sensors, wind sensors, and the like, or any combination of the same. The sensors(s) 312a can be configured to capture sensor data during operation of the drone 312 and communicate the sensor data / feedback to the vehicle 310 and / or to the remote control station 314, e.g., using communication system 312b and the communication connections shown in FIG. 3. In embodiments, the captured sensor data can be used to identify, assess, or verify the existence of the operational condition affecting the vehicle 310. In embodiments, the captured sensor data can be used to guide operation of the vehicle 310. For example, the vehicle controller 310c can operate the vehicle 310, e.g., to a more desirable location, based on the captured sensor data, e.g., that has identified the more desirable location. In addition to communicating captured sensor data, the communication system 312b can receive signals from the vehicle 310 and / or from the remote control station 314. These signals can include instructions, e.g., to reposition the drone 312, to capture particular sensor data with the drone 312, to operate the drone 312 along a pre-set route or trajectory, and / or to deploy one or morealerts or alert indicators from the drone 312, e.g., using its alert system 312e that is described below.

[0049] The alert system 312e can be used to deploy different t pes of alerts from the drone 312. The alert system 312e shown in FIG. 3 includes a non-limiting select on of alert components 312f, 312g, 312h. In embodiments, any one or combination of the alert components 312f, 312g, 312h shown in FIG. 3 can be incorporated into the drone 312, among others. It should therefore be understood that the components 312f, 312g, 312h are included in FIG. 3 for explanation purposes.

[0050] The alert system 312e includes a display 312f. The display 312f can be operated, e.g., by the control system 312c, to display visual alerts and messages, e.g., to approaching traffic. The alert system 312e includes a speaker 312g. The speaker 312g can be used to provide audible alerts and messages, e.g., to approaching traffic. The alert system 312e includes an alert-deployment system 312h. The alert-deployment system 312h can be used to deploy one or more physical alert indicators from the drone 312, e.g., for detection by approaching traffic. In embodiments, the deployment of alerts can be controlled by the control system 312c of the drone 312. In embodiments, the deployment of alerts can be initiated based on sensor data / feedback from the sensors 312a. In embodiments, the deployment of alerts can be controlled by the drone controller 310d of the control system 310b via communication signals sent through the communications connection 318 and / or the network 316.

[0051] In embodiments, the remote control station 314 can form part of the system 300. The remote control stab on 314 can communicate with the vehicle 310 and / or with the drone 312, e.g., via the network 316. In embodiments, the remote control station 314 can send signals to the drone 312 (e.g., instructions) and / or receive feedback from the drone 312 (e.g., sensor data), e.g., via communication connections 322, 315 shown in FIG. 3. In embodiments, the remote control station 314 can send signals to the vehicle 310 (e.g., instructions) and / or obtain feedback from the vehicle 310 (e.g., feedback on vehicle operation), e.g., via communication connections 322, 320 shown in FIG. 3. In embodiments, the remote control station 314 can include a communication system 314a that can send and receive signals, e.g., wired and / or wirelessly. In embodiments, the remote control station 314 can include a control system 314b. The control system 314b when implemented can include a drone controller 314c and / or a vehicle controller 314d. In embodiments, the drone controller 314c can be used to send signals to the drone 312, e.g., deployment and operating instructions and the like. In embodiments, the vehicle controller 314d can be used to send signals to the vehicle 310, e.g., operating instructions and the like. These signals can be sent via network 316.

[0052] Looking still at FIG. 3, one example deployment and operation of the drone 312 will be described. In response to an indication that the vehicle 310 has encountered an operational condition or particular condition, e.g., as indicated by a signal from the control system 310b, the drone 312 can be deployed from the drone enclosure 310a, e.g., by the drone controller 310d. In embodiments, the drone 312 can be deployed along a pre-set trajectory, along a pre-set direction, along a pre-set route (e.g., circling the vehicle), to a pre-set distance from the vehicle 310, to a pre-set height from the ground, and / or with instructions to deploy a pre-set alert indicator, among other things. Pre-setting the operation of the drone 312 can help reduce the processing power required by the control system 312c of the drone 312, and / or can help reduce the processing power required by the drone controller 310d of the control system 310b ofthe vehicle 310. In embodiments, one or more of a pre-set trajectory, a pre-set direction, a pre-set route, or the like, may be selected as a function of the operational condition or particular condition. For example, a first pre-set trajectory may be selected based on an indication of a first operational condition; and a second pre-set trajectory may be selected based on an indication of a second operational condition, where the second pre-set trajectory is different from the first pre-set trajectory, and where the first operational condition is different than the second operational condition. The deployed drone 312 can communicate with the vehicle 310 during deployment, e.g., directly through communications connection 318 and / or through network 316. In embodiments, the drone controller 310d may direct and control operation of the deployed drone 312. In embodiments, the drone controller 312d may direct and control operation of the deployed drone 312. In embodiments, the drone controller 314c may direct and control operation of the drone, e.g., as part of control provided by a fleetmanagement system.

[0053] During deployment, the drone 312 can obtain feedback on its surroundings, e.g., by capturing sensor data using the sensors 312a. This sensor data can be communicated to the control system 312c of the drone 312, to the control system 310b of the vehicle 310, and / or to the control system 314b of the remote control station 314 using the communication systems 312b and 310e and / or 314a. The control systems 310b, 312c, and / or 314b can process the sensor data for the purpose of determining the state of the operational condition affecting the vehicle 310, determining the next steps for operating the vehicle 310 and / or operating the drone 312, and / or to determine if alerts or alert indicators should be deployed at a particular location.

[0054] The sensors 312a on the drone 312 can be used to capture different types of sensor data. In embodiments, the captured sensor data can be associated with a surrounding environment, e.g., being associated with traffic, weather conditions, visibility, road conditions, and the like. In embodiments, the captured sensor data can be associated with the vehicle 310 and / or its operational condition or state. In embodiments, following deployment of the drone 312, sensor data can be captured, and used to confirm if there is damage, e.g., tire damage, impact damage, fire damage, and / or to determine if another operational issue is occurring. In embodiments, the captured sensor data can be used to confirm if the vehicle 310 is stuck, confirm if the vehicle 310 is being hijacked or is subject to theft, vandalism, or another undesired interaction, and can also be used to confirm that no operational condition exists despite the initial indication.

[0055] In embodiments, sensor data captured by the drone 312 can be used, e.g., by the drone controller 310d, by the drone controller 312d, and / or by the drone controller 314c, to select the deployed position of the drone 312, e.g., relative to the vehicle 310 and / or relative to a surrounding environment. For example, captured sensor data associated with terrain topography, a location of a roadway, a location and direction of traffic, a location of blind spots, a direction of clear and / or obstructed sightlines, visibility conditions, weather conditions, and the like, can be used to determine where to position the drone 312 and where to deploy alerts (e.g., visual alerts) and / or alert indicators (e.g., physically -deployable alert indicators such as warning signs, flags, lights, flares, reflectors, or the like). In embodiments, the vehicle 310, the remote control station 314, and / or the drone 312 may store one or more pre-set trajectories or routes that can be used by the drone 312 during deployment to limit processing and communication demands at initial deployment.

[0056] In embodiments, sensor data captured by the drone 312 is communicated to the vehicle 310. The vehicle 310 can then process and use the sensor data, potentially in combination with other data (e.g., obtained using sensors attached to the vehicle 310), to operate and direct the vehicle 310 to a different location. In some embodiments, sensor data captured by the drone 312 may comprise data that would otherwise be captured by one or more sensor(s) on the vehicle, but for the fact that the one or more sensor(s) are degraded (e.g., a degraded sensor that undesirably impacts operation of the vehicle). To provide one nonlimiting example, one or more sensor(s) configured for collecting optical information (e.g., LIDAR, camera, or the like) in order to assist with navigation of an at least partially autonomous vehicle may become degraded to a point where operability of the vehicle iscompromised. In such an example, the drone may include one or more sensors that can al least partially compensate for the degraded vehicle sensor(s), in order to provide sufficient data to control the vehicle to a desired location. Such data may be used by the vehicle in a “limp mode” of operation, in embodiments. In such an example, the drone may be positioned with respect to the vehicle such that the drone is capable of acquiring sensor data that sufficiently reflects data otherwise captured by the degraded vehicle sensor, to thereby assist with the vehicle’s movement. In embodiments, one or more other drone attributes may be utilized as well. For example, the drone can display visual alerts in the form of messages to indicate to other vehicles, pedestrians, or the like, of the specific condition. As examples, captured sensor data associated with terrain topography, weather conditions, a location and proximity of a roadway, a location and direction of traffic, a location of alert indicators (presented or deployed by the drone 312), and / or a geographic location near the vehicle (e g., a shoulder that can accommodate the vehicle 310) can be used by the control system 310b of the vehicle 310 to determine how to direct the vehicle 310 so that the vehicle 310 is less exposed, and / or such that alerts and alert indicators deployed by the drone 312 have greater effectiveness (e g., by being located between the vehicle 310 and approaching traffic).

[0057] In embodiments, captured sensor data can be used by the control system 310b and / or 312c to determine which alerts and / or alert indicators to deploy using the alert system 312e. This can include selecting a most suitable alert and / or alert indicator to deploy, selecting a most suitable location or locations for deploying alerts and / or alert indicators, and / or selecting a most suitable time to deploy alerts and / or alert indicators (e.g., once a vehicle reaches a stationary position). For example, captured sensor data associated with terrain topography, a location and proximity of a roadway, a location and direction of traffic, a location of blind spots or blocked sightlines, visibility conditions, weather conditions, vehicle location(s), or the like can be used for selecting and deploying suitable alerts and alert indicators at suitable locations. In embodiments, data indicating an operational condition of an associated vehicle can be used for selecting a suitable alert or alert indicator. For example, when data indicates an operational state is associated with partial disablement such that a vehicle is still movable, a visual indicator such as “CAUTION SLOW VEHICLE” may be selected and presented. In another example, when data indicates an operational state is associated with full disablement such that the vehicle is fully immobilized and not movable, a visual indicator such as “CAUTION STOPPED VEHICLE AHEAD” may be selected and presented. These are intended to represent nonlimiting example scenarios and numerous others are contemplated herein.

[0058] Looking now at FIG. 4, a diagram 400 representing an example scenario of deploying and operating a drone in connection with a vehicle is provided, in accordance with embodiments of the present disclosure. The diagram 400 is intended to represent one nonlimiting example scenario, with numerous others contemplated herein. For example, the diagram 400 is associated with a particular set of circumstances, e.g., roadway conditions, roadway geometry, terrain topography, weather conditions, traffic conditions, location of disablement or partial disablement of a vehicle, and the like. In other embodiments associated with different circumstances, a different deployment and operation of a drone may occur. For example, this can include the deployment of different alerts and / or alert indicators from a drone, deployment of a drone to different locations, transit of a partially disabled vehicle to different locations based on feedback and / or control indications from a drone, and / or other differences based on the particular situation and circumstances.

[0059] In FIG. 4, a vehicle 405 is shown positioned on a roadway 410. The vehicle 405 can be human operated or partially or fully autonomously operated in different scenarios, and in embodiments, can be a freight truck as depicted in FIG. 4. In the scenario shown in FIG. 4, the vehicle 405 is in a disabled or partially disabled state (e.g., due to malfunction, impact, powertrain failure, or the like). The vehicle 405 can also be stopped for other reasons, e.g., lost cargo, fire, theft, hijacking, being stuck (e.g., in mud, snow, ice, flooding, or the like). Having determined that the vehicle 405 is disabled, partially disabled, or otherwise in a state that is suitable for assistance from a deployed drone, a control system associated with the vehicle 405 and / or associated with a remote control station, e.g., the remote control station 314 shown in FIG. 3, initiates deployment of a drone 415 from the vehicle 405 (e.g., from a pod enclosure or launch platform thereon). The drone 415 can be any of those described herein, e.g., being a UAV or UTV configured to deploy different alerts and / or alert indicators in various embodiments. The drone 415 can be deployed (e.g., along a pre-configured or pre-set trajectory or route) by a control system associated with the vehicle 405, with the drone 415 itself, and / or with the remote control station (if implemented as described in connection with FIG. 3). The drone 415 can then be operated from a stationary location, e.g., as shown in FIG. 4, relative to the roadway 410, and / or can be operated to follow and / or direct the vehicle 405 as it travels along the roadway 410 in its reduced operational state to increase visibility for the vehicle 405 and otherwise support the continued operation of the vehicle 405. In embodiments, the drone 415 can be deployed as a "flying eye” and used to provide real-time feedback about the vehicle 405 and / or its surroundings. In embodiments, the drone 415 can be operated to circle thevehicle 405 while capturing sensor data and providing sensor feedback (e.g., images, video, location information, and the like). The sensor feedback can be used to determine or confirm the type of issue that is affecting the vehicle 405. The sensor feedback can also be used to identify issues that require local assistance (e.g., fire, spilled cargo, collision, and the like). The sensor feedback can also be used to identify or confirm potentially less-routine issues such as theft (e.g., of cargo), hijacking, vandalism, and the like. In embodiments, the sensor feedback can be communicated to the vehicle 405 and / or to a remote control station so that a response to the issue, if required, can be coordinated.

[0060] Looking still at FIG. 4, it can be seen that the roadway 410 includes traffic, e.g., incoming traffic 412 and oncoming traffic 414, that is approaching the vehicle 405. The vehicle 405 is stopped at a location around a curve 401 in the roadway 410. The curve 401 can result in the vehicle 405 being less visible to the incoming traffic 412. However, the drone 415 has been deployed to a position near the curve 401 and generally behind / rearward of the vehicle 405 to thus in part intercept the incoming traffic 412. From this position, the drone 415 can display any number of visual alerts, e g., static or flashing lights, messages including those presented on a display, screen, or a matrix or mini-matrix message board, among other things. FIG. 4 depicts one example alert in the form of a display 408 showing “CAUTION” that can be presented on the drone 415. The drone 415 can also be used to deploy one or more alert indicators at different locations, e g., location 403 on the roadway 410, that help increase visibility for the vehicle 405. For example, these alert indicators can include reflectors 407, warning triangles 409, flares 411, flags 413, or other alert indicators that are not depicted (e.g., flashing lights, high-contrast objects or signs, and the like). The drone 415 can be configured to deploy such alert indicators at a consolidated location, e.g., behind the vehicle 405, or in a distributed configuration, e.g., along the roadway 410 leading up to the vehicle 405, in embodiments. The positioning or re-positioning of the drone 415, the deploying of alerts and / or alert indicators, and / or the use of the drone 415, e.g., to inform, direct, and / or guide the vehicle 405, can be controlled using a control system, e.g., one associated with the vehicle 405.

[0061] In embodiments, alert indicators that are deployed by a drone (e.g., UAV or UTV, or both) can subsequently be retneved / collected. For example, subsequent to deployment, the alert indicators can be retrieved / collected by the same drone that deployed them, or can be retrieved / collected by another drone or vehicle. To illustrate one example scenario, a vehicle becomes at least partially disabled or otherwise encounters an operational condition; a drone is deployed from the vehicle; alert indicators are then deployed from the drone to signal / alertapproaching traffic; the vehicle is operated or directed to a location that is less exposed or obstructing; and then, optionally upon approach or arrival of roadside support, the deployed drone uses one or more retri eval / collect! on mechanisms or devices thereon to collect at least some or all of the deployed alert indicators. The collection process can occur so that the alert indicators are not obstructing or left behind and / or so that those alert indicators can be used again, if needed. Advantageously, this may avoid a person having to retrieve alert indicators which may be positioned in locations challenging to readily access (e.g., a shoulder of a blind spot on an opposing side of the road where the disabled vehicle is parked). Furthermore, for example including but not limited to fully autonomous vehicles, or partially autonomous vehicles, such a capability of being able to rely on the drone(s) to retrieve alert indicators or devices can help ensure that those alert indicators or devices may not be left behind (e.g., can be used again as mentioned above).

[0062] FIG. 5 depicts a block diagram of a method 500 of presenting one or more alerts in connection with a vehicle, e.g., the vehicle 100, the vehicle 310, and / or the vehicle 405, among others, in accordance with embodiments of the present disclosure. The method 500 includes blocks 510-514, but is not limited to this selection of elements, or the order depicted. In block 510, a drone, e.g., the drone 415 shown in FIG. 4, is deployed. The drone can be deployed from a vehicle, e.g., the vehicle 405 shown in FIG. 4, in response to an indication that the vehicle is disabled or partially disabled or otherwise is operating with reduced capacity or is in a state suitable for assistance from a deployed drone. The deployment of the drone can be initiated by a control system associated with the drone, associated with the vehicle, and / or associated with a remote control station that is in communication with the drone and / or the vehicle. The deployed drone may have one or more visual display components such as, for example, a screen or a message board such as a mini-matrix message board, and / or may have one or more deployable alert indicators. The deployable alert indicators may include, for example, warning or caution signs including warning triangles, and / or may include flares, flags, lights, reflectors, and other high-visibility and / or high-contrast indicators.

[0063] In block 512, the drone is operated, e.g., by a control system, to a position offset from a position of the vehicle. The offset position can be one that is rearward of the vehicle, near a roadway or traffic pattern, or otherwise at a location that can intercept approaching, e.g., incoming and / or oncoming, traffic. In embodiments, the drone can be operated, e.g., by a control system, to maintain a generally fixed distance between the drone and the vehicle as the vehicle travels (e.g., at a reduced speed relative to traffic). This generally fixed distance can beat least 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 10, 15, or 20 meters, among other possible distances. The fixed position or fixed distance of the drone from the vehicle can be maintained by controlling a direction, speed, and acceleration of the drone while still coordinating the deployment of alerts and alert indicators as needed. The drone can also be deployed to a position forward of the vehicle. In embodiments, the drone can be positioned and remain fixed at a position of highest visibility / detectability, and can then shift position in response to movement of the associated vehicle. In another embodiment, two drones can be deployed, e.g., one drone being deployed rearward of the vehicle and another drone being deployed forward of the vehicle for multidirectional presentation of alerts and alert indicators (e.g., to alert both incoming traffic and oncoming traffic) and / or multi-directional monitoring and data capturing. This can be useful when, for example, the vehicle is on a two-lane road (e.g., a roadway with two lanes, each having a width of a single vehicle, going in opposing directions) as contrasted with an interstate. In this situation, providing alerts to oncoming traffic as well as incoming traffic can increase visibility and help control interactions with both vectors of traffic.

[0064] In block 514, the drone is operated to present one or more alerts in connection with the vehicle. For example, the alerts can be visual alerts selected and generated based on a status of the vehicle (e.g., disabled or only partially disabled). In embodiments, a deployed drone can be operated, e.g., by a control system associated with the drone, associated with the vehicle, and / or associated with a remote control station that is in communication with the drone and / or the vehicle, to display a message on a message board (e.g., “CAUTION,” “SLOW,” “DISABLED VEHICLE,” “MOVE LEFT” or “MOVE RIGHT,” among other possible messages). In embodiments, the drone can also be operated to deploy one or more alert indicators. The term “deploy” encompasses at least the following actions: dropping, discharging, outwardly -propelling, displacing, actuating, launching, detaching, ejecting, and any other action where a tangible object is separated from the drone that carries the tangible obj ect.

[0065] Looking now at FIG. 6, a block diagram representing a method 600 of using captured sensor data from a drone to direct vehicle movement is provided, in accordance with embodiments of the present disclosure. The method 600 includes blocks 610-616, but is not limited to this selection of elements, or the order depicted. In block 610, a drone, e.g., the drone 415 shown in FIG. 4, having one or more sensors, e.g., optical sensors, radar sensors, LIDAR sensors, or the like, is deployed. The drone can be deployed by a control system associated with the drone, associated with the vehicle, and / or associated with a remote control station (ifused, e.g., as part of a fleet-management system). In block 612, the drone is operated, e.g., by the control system, to a position that is offset from a position of the vehicle, e.g., a position between the vehicle and approaching traffic. This position can be rearward and / or forward of the vehicle. In block 614, the drone is operated to communicate captured sensor data at least to a vehicle control system (e.g., the vehicle control system 310b as shown in FIG. 3) associated with the vehicle. In block 616, the vehicle control system is operated to direct movement of the vehicle based on the captured sensor data, e.g., that is continuously communicated to the vehicle control system.

[0066] In embodiments, based on captured sensor data related to terrain topography or geography, the control system may determine that the vehicle is positioned partially on a roadway and partially on a shoulder to the side of the roadway. Based on this, the control system may direct movement of the vehicle so that the vehicle is positioned entirely on the shoulder. In another embodiment, based on captured sensor data, the control system may determine that the vehicle is positioned immediately beyond a curve in the roadway and / or immediately beyond a hill or rise in the roadway. If the vehicle remains movable / drivable, the control system can direct forward movement of the vehicle a certain distance such that the vehicle is no longer positioned immediately beyond the curve or the hill. This can increase the response / reaction time for approaching traffic as the traffic completes the curve and / or crests the hill. These are example embodiments, and additional possibilities of directing movement of the vehicle based on captured sensor data are contemplated herein.

[0067] Looking now at FIG. 7, a block diagram of a method 700 of using captured sensor data to direct positioning of a drone is provided, in accordance with embodiments of the present disclosure. The method 700 includes blocks 710-714, but is not limited to this selection of elements, or the order depicted. In block 710, a drone, e.g., any of the drones described herein, having one or more sensors is deployed, e.g., from a supporting enclosure on a vehicle. In block 712, the drone is operated, e.g., by a control system, to capture sensor data including data related to terrain topography. In block 714, the drone is operated, e.g., by a control system, to a position offset from a position of the vehicle based on the captured sensor data. The captured sensor data may indicate that the vehicle is positioned at a location where it is at least partially obscured from the visibility of approaching traffic (e.g., around a curve or over a hill). Based on this information, the drone may be positioned at a location toward traffic, e.g., before a curve or hill, to alert the approaching traffic using alerts or alert indicators. In embodiments, the captured sensor data as well as, for example, information from the vehicle control systemmay indicate that the vehicle is continuing to travel in a forward direction. Based on this information, the drone may be operated to a position rearward of the vehicle and further operated to maintain a generally fixed distance between the drone and the vehicle as the vehicle travels in its forward direction. This can allow the drone to present alerts and / or deploy alert indicators at new locations associated with the traveling vehicle’s position. These are example embodiments, and additional possibilities of positioning the drone with respect to the vehicle are contemplated herein.

[0068] Looking now at FIG. 8, a block diagram of a method 800 of using captured sensor data to determine a location for release of deployable alert indicators from a drone and / or to determine what type of deployable alert indicator to release is provided, in accordance with embodiments of the present disclosure. The method 800 includes blocks 810-818, but is not limited to this selection of elements or the order depicted. In block 810, a drone, e.g., any of the drones described herein, having one or more sensors is deployed, e.g., by a control system associated with a vehicle. The drone can be deployed from an enclosure associated with the vehicle, e.g., in response to an indication that the vehicle is encountering an operational issue (e.g., a mechanical or electrical issue or a component failure or partial failure). In block 812, the drone is operated, e.g., by a control system, to capture sensor data including data related to terrain topography / geography, weather conditions, and / or roadway / traffic conditions. In block 814, the drone is operated, e.g., by a control system, to a position offset from a position of the vehicle based on the captured sensor data. In block 816, a type of deploy able alert indicator to be released from the drone is selected, e.g., by a control system associated with the drone or with the vehicle. In block 818, the drone is operated to deploy, e.g., drop, eject, or place, one or more of the selected alert indicators. The deployable alert indicator can be a reflective or high-contrast warning sign, e.g., warning triangle, a flag, a flare, flashing light, or other indicator including a plurality of the same deployed at a consolidated location or at distributed / dispersed locations, in embodiments.

[0069] In embodiments, a drone may be positioned rearward of a vehicle in a location where the terrain is flat or level such that the deployed alert indicators (e.g., warning triangles, flares, flags, and the like) are more likely to stay in position after release. This is opposed to positioning the drone in a location where there is an incline or decline in the roadway, which may cause the deployed alert indicators to shift position after release or otherwise be harder to place, arrange, and / or detect by approaching traffic. In addition, alert indicators may be deployed in areas with open visibility as opposed to areas with trees, bushes, dips, or otherground-based obstructions. In embodiments, captured sensor data from the drone may indicate low-light conditions. Based on this feedback, a control system may determine that a reflective warning triangle and / or flares may provide a higher level of visibility to approaching traffic, and thus these alert indicators may be selected and deployed. When the captured sensor data indicates bright / higher-light conditions, the control system may determine that a warning flag or sign may provide a higher level of visibility to approaching traffic and thus warning flags or signs may be selected and deployed. The drones, in this sense, may carry and deploy only one type of alert indicator, or may carry multiple types of alert indicators that can be selected and deployed based on particular circumstances as detected by sensors that provide feedback and / or based on operator input. These are example embodiments, and additional possibilities of positioning the drone with respect to the vehicle and releasing one or more determined alert indicators are contemplated herein.

[0070] Looking now at FIG. 9, a block diagram of a method 900 of using captured sensor data to determine a message to be displayed on a drone deployed in connection with a vehicle is provided, in accordance with embodiments of the present disclosure. The method 900 includes blocks 910-918, but is not limited to this selection of elements or the order depicted. In block 910, a drone, e.g., any of the drones described herein, having sensors is deployed, e.g., by a control system in response to an indication that an associated vehicle is experiencing an operational condition. In embodiments, the control system may be a vehicle control system. In block 912, the drone is operated, e.g., by a control system, to capture sensor data, e.g., data related to terrain topography and / or geography. In block 914, the drone is operated, e.g., by a control system, to a position offset from a position of the vehicle based on the captured sensor data. In block 916, the control system selects a message to be presented on a display, e.g., message board or mini-matrix message board, based on the captured sensor data. In block 918, the drone is operated e.g., by a control system, to present the selected message on the drone message board.

[0071] In embodiments, captured sensor data may indicate that a disabled or partially disabled vehicle is positioned beyond a curve in the roadway. Based on the captured sensor data, the drone may be positioned rearward of the vehicle and before the curve as described with respect to the method 500. Further based on the captured sensor data, the control system may determine that a message such as “VEHICLE BEYOND CURVE” should be presented on the drone’s message board, and the message is subsequently presented. In an embodiment, the captured sensor data may indicate that the vehicle is positioned beyond a rise or hill in theroadway. Based on the captured sensor data, the drone may be positioned rearward of the vehicle and before the rise or hill as described with respect to the method 500. Based on the captured sensor data, the control system determines that a message such as “VEHICLE BEYOND HILL” should be presented on the drone’s message board, and the message is subsequently presented. In an embodiment, captured sensor data and / or data regarding the vehicle may indicate that the vehicle is moving in a forward direction but at a speed substantially slower than incoming traffic. Based on this, the control system determines that a message such as “SLOW MOVING VEHICLE” should be presented on the drone’s message board, and the message is subsequently presented. In embodiments, a default message such as “CAUTION” or “SLOW HAZARD AHEAD” can simply be presented if no specific circumstances inform selection of a message. These are example embodiments, and additional possibilities of positioning the drone and determining a message to be presented on the drone’s message board are contemplated herein.

[0072] The methods 500, 600, 700, 800, and 900 described above can be implemented alone or in different combinations. Further, when implemented in combination, the elements may occur simultaneously or sequentially. The steps outlined with respect to the methods above may also occur in any order.

[0073] Looking now at FIG. 10, a drone 20 that can be deployed from a vehicle to present one or more alerts and / or deploy one or more alert indicators, as well as capture sensor data, is shown, in accordance with embodiments of the present disclosure. The drone 20 shown in FIG. 10 is depicted as a UAV-type drone. However, in other embodiments, a UTV-type drone (e.g., that is instead propelled by wheels or tracks) can be used, as shown in FIG. 11, for example. The drone 20 includes a plurality of propulsion components 22 (e.g., motor-driven propellers in this instance) that allow the drone 20 to be powered to different aerial locations. The drone 20 also includes a display 24 that can be used to present visual indications, e.g., signals or messages, e.g., “CAUTION!” as shown in the example of FIG. 10. The drone 20 also includes an alert-deployment system 26 configured to deploy (e.g., release, drop, eject, place, etc.) one or more alert indicators, e.g., alert indicators 28, 29, 30 shown in FIG. 10, from the drone 20. In the example of FIG. 10, the alert indicators 28, 29, 30 are depicted as being lights (e.g., lightemitting-diode or “LED” lights). The lights can operate as static lights or as flashing lights (e.g., that emit regular or irregular repeating sequences of flashes) to help alert approaching traffic. Lights are depicted in FIG. 10, but it should be understood that many other types of alert indicators can be deployed from the drone 20 such as warning triangles, flares, flags, orreflectors, or different combinations thereof. In embodiments, the drone 20 can include a control system with control components (e.g., processors and / or memories) as well as communication components that allow the drone 20 to communicate with a vehicle control system and / or with a remote control station, e.g., as described in connection with FIG. 3.

[0074] Looking now at FIG. 11, another drone 32 that can be deployed from a vehicle to present one or more alerts and / or deploy one or more alert indicators, as well as capture sensor data, is shown, in accordance with embodiments of the present disclosure. The drone 32 is similar in certain respects to the drone 20 shown in FIG. 10. For example, the drone 32 also includes the display 24 for presenting messages and includes the alert-deployment system 26 for deploying alert indicators. However, instead of being an aerial drone (e.g., a UAV), the drone 32 is a terrestrial drone (e.g., a UTV). Or, to state it differently, the drone 32 is a ground- based drone. In embodiments, the drone 20 can be deployed from the pod enclosure 112 on the vehicle 100 shown in FIG. 1 and the drone 32 can be deployed from the pod enclosure 114 on the vehicle 100 shown in FIG. 1. In such embodiments, the drones 20, 32 can be configured to deploy and operate independently, and / or can be configured to deploy and operate in coordination, or rather, perform coordinated functions.

[0075] In embodiments, a drone can be configured to retrieve / collect alert indicators that it has deployed. For example, the drone 20 and / or the drone 32 can be configured to deploy alert indicators, e.g., using the alert-deployment system 26 as shown in FIGS. 10 and 11, and can also be configured to retneve / collect at least some of the alert indicators that have been deployed once those alert indicators are no longer desired to be used. The retrieval of the alert indicators can be performed by the alert-deployment system 26 itself, and / or can be performed by a particular collection / retrieval device, e.g., such as grasping device 35 identified in FIGS. 10 and 11 for example purposes. In some embodiments, a grasping device, e.g., device 35, can be what holds the alert indicator before dropping, and can also pick them up, either more than one at a time or one-by-one. Both aerial drones and terrestrial drones can have grasping tools, including but not limited to mechanical grab (e.g., roundnose grab, clamshell grab, orange-peel grab, or the like) controllable via mechanical, electro-mechanical, and / or electro-hydraulic actuators, to collect alert indicators. In embodiments, alert indicators can be collected based on particular conditions, e.g., once a set period of time has passed, e.g., once the vehicle has reached a location that is less exposed or obstructing, e.g., once roadside support is approaching or has arrived, and / or e.g., once a vehicle control system and / or drone control system receives an instruction that retrieval should be performed. The latter can be sent from a remote location.e.g., a remote control station, e.g., one associated with a fleet management system. In some embodiments, alert indicators may comprise a computing device, for example a microchip, capable of producing a signal that can be tracked by the drone(s), such that the drone(s) can readily identify and / or locate the alert indicators. In some additional or alternative embodiments, the drone(s) may rely on other optical techniques (e.g., camera(s) and optical sensor(s) of the same) combined with object-recognition capabilities in order to ensure accurate recognition of alert indicators.

[0076] In embodiments, a system for presenting alerts that uses multiple drones is provided. The multiple drones can be deployed from a vehicle and then operated in coordination to assist the vehicle, capture sensor data, and / or present alerts and / or alert indicators to help signal, direct, and / or notify approaching traffic. For example, in embodiments, a vehicle can be configured to store, deploy, and operate at least a first drone, e.g., an aerial drone (e.g., a UAV), and a second drone, e.g., a terrestrial drone (e.g., a UTV), among other combinations. Based on operational conditions, the first drone can be deployed, the second drone can be deployed, or the first drone and the second drone can both be deployed and operated, e.g., depending on the particular circumstances encountered by the associated vehicle. For example, in instances where it is faster, more effective, or more feasible to deploy one drone to a location offset from the vehicle, and use that drone to capture sensor data, present alerts, and / or present alert indicators, the more suitable drone, e.g., 20 or 32, can be selected and deployed while the other drone, e.g., 20 or 32, remains stored.

[0077] In embodiments, map data (e.g., topographical or terrain data) can be used to select a location where a drone is deployed. The location where a drone is deployed can also be selected based on sensor data captured by the deploying vehicle, e.g., that indicates traffic density, direction(s) of approaching traffic, visibility in different directions, and the like. In embodiments, captured sensor data indicating terrain and / or traffic is more suitable for a UTV may result in deployment of the UTV but not deployment of a UAV. Or, captured sensor data indicating terrain and / or traffic is unsuitable for a UTV may result in deployment of a UAV but not deployment of the UTV. In embodiments, deployment of a particular type of drone can be based on terrain, weather, visibility, a location of the deploying vehicle, a location of a roadway or multiple roadways, a location and direction of traffic or multiple segments of traffic, traffic density, and / or based on other factors as contemplated herein.

[0078] In embodiments, map data and / or captured sensor data (e.g., from vehicle optical sensors) can be used to determine which drone to launch. For example, sensor data and / or mapdata indicating a most visible location for presenting alerts to approaching traffic, e.g., on, adjacent to, or above a roadway, e.g., at a point where approaching traffic can be alerted such that there is sufficient time and / or distance for the traffic to slow down or change direction, can be used to determine if a UAV, a UTV, or both should be launched and to what particular location(s). In embodiments, the selection of a UAV or a UTV can be based on the drone’s ability to reach a location determined to be most suitable for presenting alerts.

[0079] In embodiments, a UAV and a UTV can both be deployed and operated to present alerts and / or alert indicators, e.g., at the same point in time or at different points in time, and / or at the same general location (e.g., the same roadway with approaching traffic) or at different locations (e.g., different roadways with different approaching traffic). For example, in an embodiment, a UAV and a UTV can both be deployed and then used to alert and direct different segments of approaching traffic. The UAV and UTV can thus be used in coordination to alert traffic that the vehicle is disabled or is encountering some other operational condition. In embodiments, one of the UAV or UTV may present alerts first, while the other of the UAV or UTV shifts into a desired position (e.g., that could be a greater distance away from the deploying vehicle). In embodiments, UAV(s) and UTV(s) can perform coordinated functions such as alert traffic coming from multiple directions and divert such traffic in a desired path that bypasses the vehicle that is disabled or otherwise encountering an operational issue.

[0080] In embodiments, a vehicle control system can select which drone or combination of drones to deploy and use, e.g., based on certain conditions. For example, in embodiments, in response to a first condition, a UAV or a UTV can be deployed; and in response to a second condition, the other of the UAV or the UTV can be deployed; and in response to a third condition, both the UAV and the UTV can be deployed. In embodiments, at least one of the conditions is associated with traffic, e.g., traffic density or traffic direction. For example, a UAV may be deployed when there is higher traffic density that could inhibit positioning of a UTV, or a UTV can be deployed when use of an aerial drone is not suitable or possible, e.g., due to obstructions or visibility that inhibits it from signaling traffic. In embodiments, at least one of the conditions is associated with the direction(s) of approaching traffic. For example, the third condition can be associated with there being multiple directions of approaching traffic and thus deployment of both the UAV and the UTV is suitable for signaling the multiple directions of approaching traffic. In embodiments, at least one condition is associated with map and / or sensor data indicating that deployment of one type of drone is not feasible because the drone cannot reach the selected location, e.g., due to obstructions, traffic, terrain, or the like.
