Description

A METHOD OF PREPARING A MODIFIED POLYETHYLENE TEREPHTHALATEFIELD OF THE INVENTION

[0001] The present disclosure relates to a method of preparing modified polyethylene terephthalate (PET) . The present disclosure also relates to a modified PET obtainable from the method, a method of preparing a fiber comprising the modified PET, a fiber comprising the modified PET, and the use of the modified PET in the production of a pellet or fiber for clothing. The modified PET described herein has excellent hygroscopic, thermodynamic and mechanical properties, as well as excellent dyeability at low temperature. A fiber comprising the modified PET is therefore particularly useful in the textile industry.BACKGROUND

[0002] PET has many uses, including as a fiber in textiles. PET fiber may be made from PET through melt spinning. PET fiber has the advantage of high mechanical strength, stable thermal properties, excellent chemical corrosion resistance and low price, which makes PET fiber suited to e.g., textile applications. In fact, PET fiber is one of the most widely used fiber materials in the textile industry. Terylene (aconventional PET) is an example of a commonly used fiber in the textile industry.

[0003] However, conventional PET fiber has low hygroscopicity (e.g., conventional PET fiber has a moisture absorption of about 0.4%) and poor comfort for the user of a textile made from the fiber. In addition, the temperature required to dye conventional PET is high (usually about 130℃ or more) and therefore energy consumption is high. Moreover, when dyeing convention PET blended with another fiber, such as spandex, it is easy to damage the other fibers due to the required high dyeing temperature.

[0004] A known method of reducing the dyeing temperature required for PET fiber is to employ cationic dyeable polyester, which is one of the most widely used polyester fibers on the market. The lower dyeing temperature helps to reduce energy consumption and damage to other fibers when employed in a blend. However, compared with conventional PET, cationic dyeable polyester has poor thermodynamic properties, which limits its application in the textile industry.

[0005] It is known to include modifiers into the macromolecular chains of polyester through chemical copolymerization, in order to prepare hygroscopic and easily dyeable polyester fiber. Currently commonly used modifiers are bishydroxyethyl isophthalate-5-sodium  sulfonate, aliphatic or aromatic dicarboxylic acids / diols, and their derivatives. However, the mechanical properties of the polyester prepared from the above-mentioned modifiers are generally poor, which limits their application in the textile industry.

[0006] Thus, there is a need for a modifier which may be incorporated into the macromolecular chains of PET which yields modified PET having excellent hygroscopic, mechanical and thermodynamic properties, as well as excellent dyeability at low temperature. Specifically, there is a need for a modified PET having high moisture absorption (e.g., a moisture absorption of above 0.4%) and a dyeing temperature of below 130℃, while maintaining excellent mechanical and thermodynamic properties.

[0007] The present disclosure addresses the problems and needs mentioned above, by using a polyester polyol as a modifier in PET.SUMMARY

[0008] In a first aspect, there is provided a method of preparing a modified polyethylene terephthalate (PET) , comprising: step 1) reacting bis (2-hydroxyethyl) terephthalate (BHET) , an oligomer thereof or a derivative thereof, and a polyester polyol to obtain the modified PET.

[0009] The modified PET contains a polyester polyol unit in the macromolecular chain, which is responsible for the improved properties compared to conventional PET, such as excellent hygroscopic, mechanical and thermodynamic properties, as well as a low dyeing temperature.

[0010] In one embodiment, step 1) may react BHET and the polyester polyol. That is, the BHET used as the starting material is not in the oligomeric form and is not a derivative of BHET.

[0011] In one embodiment, the BHET may be produced by the depolymerization of PET by ethylene glycol. In other words, the BHET may be produced by recycling waste PET through a known depolymerization process.

[0012] In one embodiment, the polyester polyol may have a hydroxyl number of between about 50 to about 300 mg KOH / g.

[0013] In one embodiment, the polyester polyol may have an average OH functionality of between about 1.8 to 2.2, and preferably about 2.

[0014] In one embodiment, the polyester polyol may have an average aromatic content by weight of between about 30 wt%to about 60 wt%, based upon the total weight of the polyester polyol.

[0015] The polyester polyol having the above hydroxyl number, average OH functionality and / or the average aromatic content results in a modified PET having particularly excellent hygroscopic, mechanical and thermodynamic properties, as well as a low dyeing temperature.

[0016] In one embodiment, the BHET, an oligomer thereof or a derivative thereof may be present at about 80 to about 150 parts by weight in step 1) , and the polyester polyol may be present at about 10 to about 70 parts by weight in step 1) .

[0017] In one embodiment, the reaction in step 1) may be carried out in the presence of a catalyst. The catalyst may be selected from zinc acetate, manganese acetate, tetrabutyl titanate, antimony trioxide, ethyl acetate, a glycol antimony such as ethylene glycol antimony, or a combination thereof.

[0018] In one embodiment, the reaction in step 1) may be carried out in the presence of a heat stabilizer. The heat stabilizer may be selected from trimethyl phosphate, triphenyl phosphate, triphenyl phosphite, or a combination thereof.

[0019] In one embodiment, the catalyst, if present, may be present at about 0.05 to 0.5 parts by weight in step 1) , and / or the heat stabilizer, if present, may be present at about 0.05 to 1 parts by weight in step 1) .

[0020] In one embodiment, step 1) may comprise:

[0021] step 1a) mixing the BHET, an oligomer thereof or a derivative thereof, with the polyester polyol, at a temperature of above about 200℃, preferably between about 220℃ to about 280℃, and under a pressure of above about 90 kPa, preferably between about 100 kPa to about 400 kPa, for a time period of at least about 60 minutes, preferably between about 60 minutes to about 180 minutes; and

[0028] The foregoing embodiments should not be read to limit or otherwise narrow the scope of any inventive concepts otherwise provided by the present disclosure. While multiple embodiments are disclosed, other embodiments will become apparent to those skilled in the art from the following description. Accordingly, the description is to be regarded as illustrative rather than restrictive.DETAILED DESCRIPTION

[0029] The present disclosure relates to a method of preparing a modified polyethylene terephthalate (PET) , comprising: step 1) reacting bis (2-hydroxyethyl) terephthalate (BHET) , an oligomer thereof or a derivative thereof, and a polyester polyol to obtain the modified PET.

[0030] The modified PET contains a polyester polyol unit in the macromolecular chain, which is responsible for the improved properties (such as excellent hygroscopic, mechanical and thermodynamic properties, as well as a low dyeing temperature) compared to conventional PET and other forms of modified PET. Modified PET refers to PET which has a modifier introduced into the macromolecular chain.

[0031] [Method of preparing a modified PET]

[0032] Step 1) requires reacting BHET, an oligomer thereof or a derivative thereof, and a polyester polyol to obtain the modified PET. The copolymerization reaction incorporates the polyester polyol into the backbone (or macromolecular chain) of the PET, and hence modifies the PET.

[0033] The BHET, an oligomer thereof or a derivative thereof is preferably BHET. The oligomer of BHET contains more than one BHET unit, and the derivative of BHET may be any known  derivative of BHET which is suitable for preparing a modified PET. The structure of BHET is as follows:

[0034] BHET is commercially available. BHET may be produced by reacting terephthalic acid and ethylene glycol in an esterification reaction. BHET may also be produced by reacting dimethyl terephthalate and ethylene glycol in an ester exchange reaction. Preferably, the BHET may be produced by depolymerization of PET by ethylene glycol. The PET may be waste PET and therefore the recycled content of the modified PET is increased. The above-described esterification reaction, ester exchange reaction and depolymerization of PET are all known in the art, and the skilled person would know how to perform said reactions.

[0035] The polyester polyol employed in the method described herein is not particularly limited, and any polyester polyol known in the art which is suitable for preparing a modified PET may be used.

[0036] The polyester polyol contains ester functional groups in the backbone of the polymer, as well as hydroxyl groups. The polyester polyol is often a complex mixture of polyester polyols, and therefore average values are used to describe the properties thereof.

[0037] The polyester polyol may have a hydroxyl number of between about 25 and about 400 mg KOH / g, or between about 50 and about 350 mg KOH / g, or between about 50 and about 300 mg KOH / g, or between about 75 and about 300 mg KOH / g, or between about 75 and about 275 mg KOH / g. The hydroxyl number may be measured using ASTM-D4274-21.

[0038] The polyester polyol may have an average OH functionality of between about 1.8 and about 2.2, or between about 1.9 and about 2.1, or preferably about 2.0.

[0039] The polyester polyol may have a weight average molecular weight of between about 300 and about 2500 Da, or between about 370 and 2200 Da. The weight average molecular weight may be measured by gel permeation chromatography (GPC) .

[0040] The polyester polyol is preferably an aromatic polyester polyol. The polyester polyol may have an average aromatic content by weight of between about 30 and about 60 wt%, or between about 30 and about 50 wt%, based upon the total weight of the polyester polyol.

[0041] Commercially available polyester polyols suitable for use in the method described herein are sold under the trade name polyester polyols, available from Huntsman Corporation. Particularly useful polyester polyols include  (having a hydroxyl  number of 250 and an average functionality of 2) and  2860 (having a hydroxyl number of 91 and an average functionality of 2) .  polyester polyols are particularly preferred as the polyester polyol, and are manufactured from PET.

[0042] The reaction in step 1) may be carried out in the presence of a catalyst. The purpose of the catalyst is to facilitate the reaction in the formation of the modified PET.

[0043] Any catalyst known in the art may be used, provided it is suitable for preparing the modified PET. Suitable catalysts include zinc acetate, manganese acetate, tetrabutyl titanate, antimony trioxide, ethyl acetate, a glycol antimony such as ethylene glycol antimony, and any combination thereof. Preferably the catalyst is a glycol antimony, and more preferably antimony ethylene glycol.

[0044] The reaction in step 1) may be carried out in the presence of a heat stabilizer. The purpose of the heat stabilizer is to protect the modified PET, or any reactants and intermediates during the preparation thereof, from heat damage.

[0045] Any heat stabilizer known in the art may be used, provided it is suitable for preparing the modified PET. Suitable heat stabilizers include trimethyl phosphate, triphenyl phosphate, triphenyl phosphite, and any combination thereof. Preferably, the heat stabilizer is triphenyl phosphite.

[0046] The BHET, an oligomer thereof or a derivative thereof may present at about 80 to about 150 parts by weight in step 1) , and the polyester polyol may be present at about 10 to about 70 parts by weight in step 1) . The BHET, an oligomer thereof or a derivative thereof and the polyester polyol may be present in step 1) in a weight ratio (BHET, an oligomer thereof or derivative thereof : polyester polyol) of 1 : 0.05 to 0.75, or 1 : 0.075 to 0.6, or 1 : 0.075 to 0.3.

[0047] The catalyst, if present, may be present at about 0.05 to 0.5 parts by weight in step 1) , and / or the heat stabilizer, if present, may be present at about 0.05 to 1 parts by weight in step 1) .

[0048] In one embodiment, the BHET, an oligomer thereof or a derivative thereof may present at about 80 to about 150 parts by weight in step 1) ; the polyester polyol may be present at about 10 to about 70 parts by weight in step 1) ; the catalyst may be present at about 0.05 to 0.5 parts by weight in step 1) ; and the heat stabilizer may be present at about 0.05 to 1 parts by weight in step 1) .

[0059] Step 3) may take place after step 2) described above, or step 2) may be omitted. Thus, the fiber may be made from the modified PET or modified PET pellets. In either case, the modified PET may be dried before making the fiber. Drying the modified PET may be performed at a temperature of between about 100℃ and about 200℃ and under a pressure of no more than about 100 Pa, for a time period of between about 4 hours and about 48 hours.

[0060] Preferably, the fiber is made by melt spinning the modified PET. Melt spinning is a standard process known in the art for producing fibers. In melt spinning, the fiber-forming substance is melted for extrusion through a spinneret and then directly solidified by cooling to form the fiber. The skilled person would know how to perform the melt spinning in order to obtain suitable fibers.

[0061] Given that the modified PET of the present disclosure may be made into a fiber by known melt spinning methods, existing equipment may be used to achieve large-scale fiber production, which is useful for industrialization.

[0062] Preferably, the dtex of the fiber is from about 70 to 90 dtex, or from about 74 to about 84 dtex.

[0063] The fiber may be used to make garments. The present disclosure therefore provides a garment comprising the fiber described herein. The garment may be any known garment in the art.

[0064] [Modified PET and fiber comprising the modified PET]

[0065] The present disclosure provides a modified PET obtainable by the method described herein. Without being limited by theory, it is believed that the modified PET (and fiber made therefrom) contains the following repeating units:

[0067] Therefore, the present disclosure also provides a modified PET containing the above repeating units.

[0068] The modified PET fiber may have a breaking strength of above about 3.5 cN / dtex, or above about 3.6 cN / dtex, or above about 3.7 cN / dtex, or above about 3.8 cN / dtex, or above about 3.9 cN / dtex, or above about 4.0 cN / dtex.

[0069] The modified PET fiber may have an elongation at break of above about 15%, or above about 20%.

[0070] The breaking strength and elongation at break are determined according to ASTM D3822-07.

[0071] The modified PET fiber may have a moisture absorption of above about 0.60%, or above about 0.70%, or above about 0.75%. The moisture absorption is determined according to ASTM D2654-67.

[0072] The modified PET fiber may have a dyeing temperature of below 100℃ and a color fastness value of 4 or more, as determined by ISO 105 C06.

[0073] [Use of the modified PET in the production of a pellet or a fiber for clothing]

[0126] Table 1

[0127] For each of Example 1-4, when the dyeing temperature was 98℃, the color fastness was 4, as tested by using ISO 105 C06: 2010.

[0128] Moisture absorption, breaking strength and elongation at break of the fibers of Examples 1-4 were measured according to the methods described herein. Specifically, moisture absorption was measured according to ASTM D2654-67, and breaking strength and elongation were measured according to ASTM D3822-07.

[0129] The results in Table 1 and the color fastness tests show that the fibers produced from the modified PET had excellent physical properties and moisture absorption as well as excellent dyeing properties.

[0130] By way of comparison, the difierence in dyeing ability of a conventional PET versus the modified PET described herein was performed. The modified PET as described herein had improved dyeing at the lower temperature of 98℃ than the conventional PET, as the difference between the colour at 98℃ and 130℃ was less noticeable for the modified PET described herein.

[0131] All ranges described herein are exemplary in nature and include any and all values in between. The terms “substantially” , “approximately” and “about” used herein are interchangeable and refer to a measurement that includes the stated measurement and any measurements reasonably close to the stated measurement. Measurements that are reasonably close to the stated measurement deviate from the stated measurement by a reasonably small amount as understood and readily ascertained by individuals having ordinary skill in the relevant art. Such deviations may be attributable to measurement error, differences in measurement and / or manufacturing equipment calibrations, human error in reading and / or setting measurements, minor adjustments made to optimize performance  and / or structural parameters in view of differences in measurement associated with other components, particular implementation scenarios, imprecise adjustment and / or manipulation of objects by a person or machine. In the event it is determined that individuals having ordinary skill in the relevant art would not readily ascertain values for such reasonably small differences, the terms “about” and “approximately” can be understood to mean plus or minus 10%of the stated value.

[0132] Throughout the description and claims, the terms take the meanings explicitly defined herein, unless the context clearly dictates otherwise.

[0133] The phrases “in one embodiment” , “in an embodiment” and “in some embodiments” etc. as used herein do not necessarily refer to the same embodiment (s) , though they may. Furthermore, the phrases “in another embodiment” and “in some other embodiments” as used herein do not necessarily refer to a different embodiment, though they may. All embodiments of the present disclosure are intended to be combinable.
