Abstract

Embodiments of the present disclosure relate to methods, devices and computer readable storage medium for transmission and reception point (TRP) switching. In a method, a network device selects a first transmission and reception point (TRP) of a plurality of TRPs in a coverage area of the network device, as a primary TRP for a terminal device. Then, the network device receives an uplink signal from the terminal device via the first TRP. Based on the reception of the uplink signal via the first TRP, the network device switches the primary TRP to a different second TRP of the plurality of TRPs.

Description

METHODS, DEVICES AND MEDIUM FOR TRANSMISSION AND RECEPTION POINT SWITCHING

[0001] FIELDS

[0002] Various embodiments of the present disclosure generally relate to the field of telecommunication and in particular, to methods, devices and computer readable storage medium for transmission and reception point (TRP) switching.BACKGROUND

[0003] This section introduces aspects that may facilitate a better understanding of the disclosure. Accordingly, the statements of this section are to be read in this light and are not to be understood as admissions about what is in the prior art or what is not in the prior art.

[0004] Multiple transmission and reception points (multi-TRPs or MTRP) may communicate with one or more user equipment (UEs) in wireless communications. A combined cell is an example of MTRP scenarios where a plurality of TRPs may be deployed. The combined cell is corresponding to a plurality of areas served by the plurality of TRPs. In the combined cell, a UE does not experience any new radio (NR) cell change during TRP switching.SUMMARY

[0005] This summary is provided to introduce a selection of concepts in a simplified form that are further described below in the detailed description. This summary is not intended to identify key features or essential features of the claimed subject matter, nor is it intended to be used to limit the scope of the claimed subject matter.

[0006] The TRPs in a multi-TRP cell can receive uplink signals from a certain UE simultaneously. However, if the number of TRPs in a cell is relatively large, for example, larger than 3, then receiving and decoding uplink signals from all TRPs may consume too much uplink processing power.

[0007] To overcome or mitigate at least one of the above-mentioned problems or other problems or provide a useful solution, embodiments of the present disclosure propose methods, devices and storage medium for TRP switching.

[0008] In a first aspect of the present disclosure, there is provided a method implemented at a network device. In the method, the network device selects a first transmission and reception point (TRP) of a plurality of TRPs in a coverage area of the network device, as a primary TRP for a  terminal device. Then, the network device receives an uplink signal from the terminal device via the first TRP. Based on the reception of the uplink signal via the first TRP, the network device switches the primary TRP to a different second TRP of the plurality of TRPs.

[0009] In an example, the network device may determine, based on the reception of the uplink signal via the first TRP, whether one or more conditions are met. If it is determined that the one or more conditions are met, the network device may obtain metrics of respective channel qualities of one or more TRPs of the plurality of TRPs. The one or more TRPs include the second TRP. Based on the metrics of the respective channel qualities, the network device may switch the primary TRP to the second TRP.

[0010] In an example, the one or more conditions may comprise a first condition that a first metric of a first channel quality of the first TRP is less than a first threshold metric. Alternatively, or in addition, the one or more conditions may comprise a second condition that a number of discontinuous transmissions from the terminal device are detected via the first TRP. Alternatively, or in addition, the one or more conditions may comprise a third condition that no uplink signal from the terminal device is received via the first TRP for a time duration.

[0011] In an example, if it is determined that the first or second condition is met, the network device may obtain the metrics of the respective channel qualities of the one or more TRPs of the plurality of TRPs other than the first TRP. In an example, if it is determined that a difference of a second metric of a second channel quality of the second TRP with the first metric of the first channel quality of the first TRP is greater than a second threshold metric, the network device may switch the primary TRP to the second TRP.

[0012] In an example, the difference of the second metric of the second channel quality of the second TRP with the first metric of the first channel quality of the first TRP may comprise a weighted difference of the second metric of the second channel quality of the second TRP with the first metric of the first channel quality of the first TRP. In an example, the network device may obtain the weighted difference by applying a weighting process on a current difference of the second metric of the second channel quality of the second TRP with the first metric of the first channel quality of the first TRP and a historical difference of a metric of the second channel quality of the second TRP with a metric of the first channel quality of the first TRP.

[0013] In an example, if it is determined that the first and second conditions are met, the network device may obtain the metrics of the respective channel qualities of the one or more TRPs of the plurality of TRPs other than the first TRP. In an example, if it is determined that a second metric of a second channel quality of the second TRP is greater than a third threshold metric and a difference of the second metric of the second channel quality of the second TRP with a first metric of the first channel quality of the first TRP is greater than a fourth threshold metric, the  network device may switch the primary TRP to the second TRP.

[0014] In an example, the network device may start measurements for an uplink signal from the terminal device via the one or more TRPs of the plurality of TRPs. Based on the measurements, the network device may obtain the metrics of the respective channel qualities of the one or more TRPs of the plurality of TRPs.

[0015] In an example, if it is determined that the third condition is met, the network device may receive an uplink signal from the terminal device via the plurality of TRPs. In response to decoding the uplink signal from the terminal device via the one or more TRPs of the plurality of TRPs, the network device may obtain the metrics of the respective channel qualities of the one or more TRPs of the plurality of TRPs. In an example, if it is determined that a second metric of a second channel quality of the second TRP is highest among the metrics of the respective channel qualities of the one or more TRPs of the plurality of TRPs, the network device may switch the primary TRP to the second TRP.

[0016] In an example, the time duration may comprise a time during running of a timer. If it is determined that no uplink data from the terminal device is received via the first TRP during the running of the timer, the network device may determine that the third condition is met.

[0017] In an example, the uplink signal may comprise hybrid automatic repeat request feedback from the terminal device. In an example, if the third condition is met, the network device may determine whether the hybrid automatic repeat request feedback is to be received in a same time period as an aperiodic channel state information report from the terminal device. If it is determined that the hybrid automatic repeat request feedback is to be received in the same time period as the aperiodic channel state information report, the network device may postpone an uplink transmission of the aperiodic channel state information report from the terminal device for a number of time periods.

[0018] In an example, the metric of the channel quality comprises at least one of: signal power, or a signal to interference plus noise ratio.

[0019] In an example, the signal to interference plus noise ratio may be determined based on interference plus noise of a bandwidth for the coverage area. In an example, for a bandwidth part of the bandwidth allocated to uplink transmissions via one or more TRPs of the plurality of TRPs, the network device may obtain the interference plus noise of the allocated bandwidth part by means of respective TRPs of the one or more TRPs of the plurality of TRPs. For a bandwidth part of the bandwidth unallocated to uplink transmissions, the network device may obtain a plurality of estimates of the interference plus noise of the unallocated bandwidth part by means of respective TRPs of the plurality of TRPs. Then, the network device may determine the  interference plus noise of the unallocated bandwidth part based on the plurality of estimates.

[0020] In an example, the uplink signal from the terminal device may comprise at least one of: an uplink signal from the terminal device on a physical uplink shared channel, or an uplink signal from the terminal device on a physical uplink control channel.

[0021] In an example, the network device may receive respective samples of a preamble from the terminal device via the plurality of TRPs during a random access process of the terminal device. Then, the network device may obtain measured powers of the respective samples of the preamble. If it is determined that a measured power of a sample of the preamble received via the first TRP is highest among the measured powers of the respective samples of the preamble, the network device may select the first TRP as the primary TRP.

[0022] In an example, each of time offsets of the respective samples of the preamble with respect to the preamble transmitted by the terminal device may be less than a threshold offset.

[0023] In an example, the random access process may comprise a contention-based random access process. If it is determined that the measured power of the sample of the preamble received via the first TRP is highest, the network device may select the first TRP as a temporary primary TRP for the terminal device. If it is determined that contention is resolved, the network device may determine the first TRP as the primary TRP.

[0024] In an example, after switching the primary TRP to the second TRP, if it is determined that decoding of an initial uplink transmission from the terminal device via the first TRP is failed, the network device may transmit, to the terminal device, via the second TRP, a request for a retransmission of the initial uplink transmission. The request indicates that the retransmission is to have a same transmission parameter as the initial uplink transmission.

[0025] In an example, before switching the primary TRP to the second TRP, the network device may receive one or more repetitions of a plurality of repetitions of an uplink transmission from the terminal device via the first TRP. Then, the network device may switch the primary TRP to the second TRP after the plurality of repetitions of the uplink transmission are received from the terminal device via the first TRP.

[0026] In an example, after switching the primary TRP to the second TRP, the network device may transmit a real time value of timing advance to the terminal device via the second TRP.

[0027] In an example, after switching the primary TRP to the second TRP, the network device may transmit a real time value of a frequency offset to the terminal device via the second TRP for frequency compensation.

[0028] In a second aspect of the present disclosure, there is provided a network device. The  traffic server comprises a processor and a memory coupled to the processor, the memory containing instructions executable by the processor, whereby the terminal device is operative to perform the method according to the first aspect.

[0029] In a third aspect of the present disclosure, there is provided an apparatus. The apparatus comprises means for performing the method according to the first aspect.

[0030] In a fourth aspect of the disclosure, there is provided a computer-readable storage medium having instructions stored thereon, the instructions, which, when executed by at least one processor of a device, cause the device to perform the method according to the first aspect.

[0031] With the present disclosure, after a primary TRP for a terminal device is selected from a plurality of TRPs in a coverage area of a network device, the network device performs primary TRP switching based on a reception of an uplink signal from the terminal device via the primary TRP. Compared with decoding uplink signals simultaneously by all the TRPs, resource consuming is saved, and the network capacity may be improved.BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWINGS

[0056] As used herein, the term “network device” or “network node” refers to a device in a communication network via which a terminal device receives services from the network. The terms “network node” , “network function” may be used interchangeably. A network function can be implemented either as a network element on a dedicated hardware, as a software instance running on a dedicated hardware, or as a virtualised function instantiated on an appropriate platform, e.g., on a cloud infrastructure. Examples of access network nodes include, but are not limited to, access points (APs) (e.g., radio access points) , base stations (BSs) (e.g., radio base stations, Node Bs, evolved Node Bs (eNBs) and newNR NodeBs (gNBs) ) . In the following description, the terms “network device” , “network node” , “base station” and “BS” may be used interchangeably.

[0057] As used herein, the term “transmission and reception point” or “TRP” refers to a device that serves an area within a coverage area of a network device. A plurality of TRPs may collaborate to serve a terminal device in an area. The TRPs may be coordinated by a Baseband Unit (BBU) or a Distributed Unit (DU) with baseband capability. Each TRP may be equipped with a plurality of different beams. The TRPs may also be referred to as access points (APs) .

[0058] As described above, multi-TRPs or MTRP may communicate with one or more UEs in wireless communications. FIG. 1A shows combined cells as examples of MTRP scenarios. As shown in FIG. 1A, a single TRP (or STRP) is corresponding to a logical cell comprising one TRP of a certain frequency. Each of Combined cells 102 and 104 is a logical cell comprising multiple TRPs. A border of this combined cell 102 or 104 is a combined border for all the constituting TRPs. In the combined cell, a UE does not experience any cell change during TRP switching, thereby achieving seamless mobility. The combined cell extends a coverage of a single cell, and thus simple cell planning and management are allowed by reducing the number of cells.

[0059] The TRPs in a multi-TRP cell can receive the uplink signals from a certain UE simultaneously. FIG. 1B shows an uplink reception with more than one TRPs. As shown in FIG. 1B, a cell 106 comprises two TRPs, including TRP1 108 and TRP2 110. Each of the UEs, including UE A 112, UE B 114 and UE C 116, can communicate with each of the TRPs 108 and 110 simultaneously.

[0060] For a multi-TRP cell, decoding of uplink signals in all TRPs are resource consuming. The Layer 1 (L1) processing power consumed is N times of the single TRP cell, where N is the number of TRPs. But the cell capacity is not extended. Therefore, there is a need to reduce the number of TRPs used for uplink decoding.

[0061] Certain aspects of the disclosure and their embodiments may provide solutions to these or other challenges. Some embodiments of the present disclosure propose a TRP selection scheme. With this scheme, after a first TRP is selected from a plurality of TRPs in a coverage area of a network device (such as a gNB) , as a primary TRP for a terminal device (such as a UE) , the network device receives an uplink signal from the terminal device via the first TRP. Based on the reception of the uplink signal via the first TRP, the network device switches the primary TRP to a different second TRP of the plurality of TRPs. Compared with decoding uplink signals simultaneously by all the TRPs, resource consuming is saved, and the network capacity may be improved.

[0062] It is to be noted that although the issue is originating from a combined cell as a logical cell covering a plurality of areas covered by a plurality of TRPs, the proposed scheme herein may be applied in general for a non-combined cell or a normal cell which comprises a plurality of TRPs. In the following, some embodiments will be described by taking a combined cell as an example while the embodiments herein can be applied in general for other types of cells.

[0063] FIG. 2 illustrates an example communication environment 200 in which embodiments of the present disclosure can be implemented.

[0064] As shown in FIG. 2, the communication environment 200, which is a part of a communication system, comprises a network device 210 which may operate as a gNB. The network device 210 serves a coverage area 220 (called a cell) where a plurality of TRPs 230-1, 230-2, …, 230-M are deployed (where M represent a positive integer) . Areas covered by the plurality of TRPs 230-1, 230-2, …, 230-M are combined into the coverage area 220. For the purpose of discussion, the plurality of TRPs 230-1, 230-2, …, 230-M will be collectedly or individually referred to as TRP (s) 230.

[0065] The communication environment 200 further comprises a terminal device 240 which may operate as UEs. The terminal device 240 may communicate with the network device 210 via the plurality of TRPs 230. A link from the network device 210 to the first device 240 is referred to as downlink (DL) , while a link from the terminal device 240 to the network device 210 is referred to as uplink (UL) . In DL, the network device 210 and the TRPs 230 are transmitting (TX) devices (or a transmitters) and the terminal device 240 is a receiving (RX) device (or a receiver) . In UL, the terminal device 240 is a TX device (or a transmitter) and the network device 210 and the TRPs 230 are RX devices (or receivers) . Communications in the communication environment 200 may be implemented according to any proper communication protocols and technologies.

[0066] It is to be understood that the numbers of devices are illustrated in FIG. 2 only for the purpose of illustration without suggesting any limitations. The communication environment 200 may include any suitable numbers of terminal devices and network devices for implementing  embodiments of the present disclosure.

[0067] In the communication environment 200, one of the plurality of TRPs 230-1, …, 230-M is selected as a primary TRP or a serving TRP for the terminal device 240, to save resource consuming and improve the network capacity. As shown in FIG. 2, when the terminal device 240 moves from an area covered by a first TRP 230-1 to a second TRP 230-2, the primary TRP for the terminal device 240 is switched from the first TRP 230-1 to the second TRP 230-2.

[0068] The TRP with the best channel quality is a good choice for decoding uplink signals from the terminal device 240. In an example, the TRP with the best channel conditions may be selected for the decoding. For example, when the terminal device 240 is located in the area covered by the first TRP 230-1, the first TRP 230-1 among the plurality of TRPs 230-1, …, 230-M is nearest to the terminal device 240 and may have best channel conditions for decoding uplink signals from the terminal device 240. In this case, the first TRP 230-1 may be selected as the primary TRP of the terminal device 240. When the terminal device 240 moves to the area covered by the second TRP 230-2, the nearest second TRP 230-2 is selected from the plurality of TRPs 230-1, …, 230-M as the primary TRP for the terminal device 240.

[0069] Uplink signals are good candidates for selecting the best TRP or triggering the TRP switch. The possible signals are a sounding reference signal (SRS) , physical uplink shared channel (PUSCH) demodulation reference signal (DMRS) and physical uplink control channel (PUCCH) data. The selection of the primary TRP may be based on the measures from all the TRPs. For example, the TRP with the highest uplink signal to interference plus noise ratio (SINR) or signal power may be selected as a new primary TRP when a SINR or signal power of the old primary TRP is degraded, for example, lower than a threshold.

[0070] In this way, when the terminal device 240 moves from an area covered by one TRP to another, there will be TRP switching in uplink instead of cell handover or cell reselection. The TRP switching is performed by the network device 210, and therefore there will be no uplink and downlink data interruption for terminal device 240.

[0071] FIG. 3 is a diagram showing a flowchart of an example method 300 of TPR switching in accordance with some embodiments of the present disclosure. The method 300 can be implemented by the network device 210 in FIG. 2. For the purpose of discussion, the method 300 will be described from the perspective of the network device 210 with reference to FIG. 2.

[0072] As shown in FIG. 3, at block 310, the network device 210 selects the first TRP 230-1 of the plurality of TRPs 230-1, …, 230-M in the coverage area 220 of the network device 210, as a primary TRP for the terminal device 240. In some embodiments, the selection of the first TRP 230-1 may be implemented in initial selection of a primary TRP for the terminal device 240. For  example, after synchronization with the network device 210, the terminal device 240 accesses the network via a random access process during which measured powers of a preamble on a physical random access channel (PRACH) may be used as measures or metrics of a channel quality to select the initial primary TRP.

[0073] In some embodiments, during the random access process of the terminal device 240, the network device 210 may receive respective samples of a preamble from the terminal device 240 via the plurality of TRPs 230-1, …, 230-M. Herein, a sample of a preamble is also called a preamble sample. For example, the network device 210 as a scheduler may obtain all the samples of the preamble received by the plurality of TRPs 230-1, …, 230-M in PRACH slots. In some embodiments, each of time offsets of the received samples of the preamble with respect to the preamble transmitted by the terminal device 240 is less than a threshold offset. A lager time offset of a sample of a preamble received by a TRP may mean that the terminal device 240 is out of the coverage of the TRP. If each of the time offsets of the respective sample of a preamble received by the TRPs 230-1, …, 230-M is larger, which means that the terminal device is out of the coverage of the network device 210, then the preamble may be discarded or filtered out. The threshold offset may be determined based on the network deployment, or predefined or fixed. In this way, the processing resource at the network side may be further saved.

[0074] After the respective samples of a preamble from the terminal device 240 are received via the plurality of TRPs 230-1, …, 230-M, the network device 210 may obtain measured powers of the respective samples of the preamble. If the network device 210 determines that a measured power of a sample of the preamble received via the first TRP 230-1 is highest among the measured powers of the respective samples of the preamble, the network device 210 may select the first TRP 230-1 as the primary TRP for the terminal device 240.

[0075] In some embodiments, the random access process of the terminal device 240 is a contention-based random access process. In these embodiments, if it is determined that the measured power of the sample of the preamble received via the first TRP 230-1 is highest, the network device 210 may first select the first TRP 230-1 as a temporary primary TRP for the terminal device 240. After the network device 210 determines that contention is resolved, the network device 210 may determine the first TRP 230-1 as the primary TRP.

[0076] For example, after the first TRP 230-1 with the best measured power of the preamble is selected as temporary primary TRP, the subsequent uplink data for the terminal device 240 may be scheduled by the network device 210 on the temporary primary TRP, i.e., the first TRP 230-1. Then, the network device 210 may schedule message 2 (Msg2) , message 3 (Msg3) and subsequent data for the terminal device 240 on the first TRP 230-1 as the temporary primary TRP. After contention resolution is completed, for example, after hybrid automatic repeat request (HARQ)  acknowledgement (ACK) to message 4 (Msg4) (containing a Contention Resolution Identity) is successfully received, the temporary primary TRP is set as a primary TRP for the terminal device 240.

[0077] After the first TRP 230-1 is selected as the primary TRP for the terminal device 240, at block 320, the network device 210 receives an uplink signal from the terminal device 240 via the first TRP 230. For example, the uplink signal from the terminal device 240 is received and decoded on the selected primary TRP, i.e., the first TRP 230-1.

[0078] At block 330, based on the reception of the uplink signal via the first TRP 230-1, the network device 210 switches the primary TRP to a different second TRP 230-2 of the plurality of TRPs 230-1, …, 230-M. In some embodiments, the switching of the primary TRP may be based on respective channel qualities of the current primary TRP and other TRPs (also called secondary TRPs) . In an example, if the network device 210 determines, based on the reception of the uplink signal via the first TRP 230-1, that one or more conditions are met, then the network device 210 may obtain metrics of respective channel qualities of one or more TRPs of the plurality of TRPs 230-1, …, 230-M where the one or more TRPs include the second TRP 230-2. The metrics of the channel qualities may be determined by the respective TRPs of the plurality of TRPs 230-1, …, 230-M and reported to the network device 210. Alternatively, or in addition, the network device 210 may measure the channel quality on each of the plurality of TRPs 230-1, …, 230-M by itself. Based on the metrics of the respective channel qualities, the network device 210 may switch the primary TRP of the terminal device 240 to the second TRP 230-2.

[0079] In some embodiments, the one or more conditions may comprise a first condition that a metric (referred to as a first metric) of a channel quality (referred to as a first channel quality) of the first TRP 230-1 (as the current primary TRP) is less than a threshold metric (referred to as a first threshold metric) . For example, the reselection of the primary TRP may be implemented during regular uplink transmissions of the terminal device 240. After the initial primary TRP selection, the network device 210 may monitor the first channel quality of the first TRP 230-1 as the primary TRP. If the first metric of the first channel quality is lower than a threshold metric, the network device 210 may reselect the TRP (for example, the second TRP 230-2) with the best channel quality as new primary TRP for the terminal device 240.

[0080] The metric of the channel quality may comprise a signal power, and / or a SINR. A signal to noise ratio (SNR) or any other metrics are also possible. In some embodiments, considering channel reciprocity, the network device 210 may receive a report for the channel quality from the terminal device 240. Such a report may contain CSI, a received signal strength indicator (RSSI) , a reference signal received power (RSRP) , a reference signal received quality (RSRQ) and / or the like.

[0081] In some embodiments, in the case that the SINR is used as the metric of the channel quality, the SINR may be determined based on interference plus noise (IpN) of a bandwidth for the coverage area 220 of the network device 210. This means that cell-level IpN is used for all the TRPs in a multi-TRP cell. On the bandwidth for the coverage area 220 of the network device 210, some bandwidth part may be allocated to some TRPs of the plurality of TRPs 230-1, …, 230-M for decoding the uplink signals from terminal devices while some other bandwidth part may be unallocated or not used. To determine the cell-level IpN, IpN of the allocated bandwidth part and the unallocated bandwidth part may be determined separately.

[0082] In some embodiments, for a bandwidth part of the bandwidth allocated to uplink transmissions via one or more TRPs of the plurality of TRPs 230-1, …, 230-M, the network device 210 may obtain the IpN of the allocated bandwidth part by means of respective TRPs of the one or more TRPs of the plurality of TRPs 230-1, …, 230-M. For a bandwidth part of the bandwidth unallocated to uplink transmissions, the network device 210 may obtain a plurality of estimates of the IpN of the unallocated bandwidth part by means of respective TRPs 230-1, …, 230-M of the plurality of TRPs and then determine the IpN of the unallocated bandwidth part based on the plurality of estimates. In an example, the plurality of estimates of the IpN of the unallocated bandwidth may be averaged to generate the IpN of the unallocated bandwidth part.

[0083] The IpN or its estimates may be calculated by the network device 210 may based on the uplink signals decoded by the respective TRPs. Alternatively, or in addition, the IpN or its estimates may be calculated by the respective TRPs and then reported by the respective TRPs to the network device.

[0084] By way of example, in the case that the bandwidth for the coverage area 220 comprises a plurality of physical resource blocks (PRBs) , each TRP decoding the uplink signals may determine or estimate the IpN of PRBs allocated to that TRP. For unallocated PRBs, all the TRPs 230-1, …, 230-M may determine or estimate the IpN of the unallocated PRBs. To determine the cell-level IpN is used for all the TRPs in a multi-TRP Cell, the network device 210 may obtain the IpN of allocated PRBs from the TRPs decoding the uplink signals while the estimates of the IpN of unallocated PRBs is averaged among all the TRPs to obtain the IpN of unallocated PRBs.

[0085] The uplink signal from the terminal device 240 may comprise any uplink signal. In some embodiments, the uplink signal may comprise an SRS from the terminal device 240. In an example, after the first TRP 230-1 is selected as the primary TRP for the terminal device 240, the network device 210 may schedule SRS resources specific to the terminal device 240 for the first TRP 230-1 to monitor the channel quality such as an SINR. The SRSs for different TRPs may be different. In some embodiment, the uplink signal may comprise a CSI report from the terminal device 240. Based on the CSI report, the network device 210 may measure an uplink channel  quality as well as obtain a reciprocal downlink channel quality.

[0086] In some embodiments, to avoid the degradation for a network capacity due to a limited SRS link budget when the number of terminal devices is increasing, an uplink signal from the terminal device 240 on a physical uplink shared channel (PUSCH) and / or a physical uplink control channel (PUCCH) may be used to switch the primary TRP. Thus, the TRP switching may not depend on any special reference signals, thereby further improving the network capacity. The PUSCH and / PUCCH may carry a periodic uplink transmission such as a periodic CSI report. In some embodiments, to further reduce the peak throughput due to the usage of resources for non-traffic periodic data, aperiodic uplink transmissions may be carried in the PUSCH and / PUCCH. Thus, peak uplink throughput is not impacted. In the embodiments where the PUSCH and / or PUCCH is used for TRP switching, based on a signal power of the PUSCH and PUCCH, the TRP (e.g., the second TRP 230-2) with the best channel quality may be reelected as a new primary TRP if the channel quality (such as a SINR of the PUSCH or a PUSCH SINR) of the current primary TRP (e.g., the first TRP 230-1) is lower than a threshold.

[0087] The first metric of the first channel quality of the first TRP 230-1 in the first condition for triggering the primary TRP reselection may or may not be the same as the metric of the channel quality for selecting a new primary TRP. for example, in some embodiments, the first metric of the first channel quality of the first TRP may use a signal power, and the metrics of the channel qualities for the primary TRP reselection may use uplink SINR.

[0088] The metric of the channel quality may be a real-time value, or a value filtered using the real-time value and a historical value. For example, a weighted value may be obtained by applying a weighting process on the real-time value and the historical value. An example filtering process will be described below. In this example, the following time normalized filter applies: Fn= (1-γ) ·Fn-1+γ·Mn  (1)

[0089] where Fn represents the normalized filtered measurement updated at a time instance n; Mn represents the latest received measurement sample; and Fn-1 represents the normalized filtered measurement updated at a time instance n-1. γ represents the adjusted filtering coefficient calculated at each instance n as follows: γn=1- (1-ff) Timediff  (2)

[0090] where Timediff represents the difference in time between the two latest consecutive samples: Timediff=Timen-Timen-1 (ms)  (3)

[0091] ff is the forgetting factor of the filter coefficient adjustments and is a value bigger than  0 and less than or equal to 1. The value of ff may be set based on simulation or experiences.

[0092] If the first metric of the first channel quality of the first TRP 230-1 is determined to be less than the first threshold metric, it may be determined that the channel quality of the primary TRP is bad. The value of the first threshold metric may be set based on the network deployment or channel measurement results, or predefined. In some embodiments, if the channel quality of the primary TRP is not good, the network device 210 may obtain the metrics of the respective channel qualities of the one or more TRPs of the plurality of TRPs other than the first TRP 230-1. For example, the network device 210 may obtain the metrics of the channel qualities of all the secondary TRPs. If it is determined that a difference of a metric (referred to as a second metric) of a channel quality (referred to as a second channel quality) of the second TRP 230-2 with the first metric of the first channel quality of the first TRP 230-1 is greater than a threshold metric (referred to as a second threshold metric) , the network device 210 may switch the primary TRP to the second TRP 230-2.

[0093] By way of example, in the embodiments where the metric of the channel quality for triggering the primary TRP reselection is a SINR of a PUSCH and the metric of the channel quality for selecting a new primary TRP is a signal power of a PUSCH and / or PUCCH, if the network device 210 detects that the SINR of primary TRP (e.g., the first TRP 230-1) is not good in a PUSCH reception, which, for example, is lower than a threshold SINR, then the network device 210 may measure the signal power of the PUSCH and / or PUCCH of secondary TRPs. If a difference of signal power (also called a power difference) of the PUSCH and / or PUCCH between the best secondary TRP (e.g., the second TRP 230-2) and the primary TRP (e.g., the first TRP 230-1) is greater than a threshold, then the network device 210 may switch the primary TRP to the best secondary TRP. In this example, the measured power of secondary TRPs may be signal power of the PUSCH, signal power of the PUCCH, or a combination of signal power of the PUSCH and PUCCH.

[0094] In some embodiments, the difference of the second metric of the second channel quality of the second TRP 230-2 with the first metric of the first channel quality of the first TRP 230-1 may comprise a weighted difference of the second metric with the first metric. To obtain the weighted difference, the network device 210 may apply a weighting process on a current difference of the second metric of the second channel quality of the second TRP 230-2 with the first metric of the first channel quality of the first TRP 230-1 and a historical difference of a metric of the second channel quality of the second TRP 230-2 with a metric of the first channel quality of the first TRP 230-1.

[0095] In some embodiments, if both the PUSCH and PUCCH are used for the filtered (or weighted) power difference, then the different forgetting factor ff in equation (2) is applied to the  PUSCH and PUCCH. puschDelta [i] = puschPower [i] -puschpPower  (4) pucchDelta [i] = pucchPower [i] -pucchpPower  (5) deltaFiltered [i] = (1-gammaPUSCH) *deltaFilter [i] + gammaPUSCH*puschDelta [i] (6) deltaFiltered [i] = (1-gammaPUCCH) *deltaFilter [i] + gammaPUCCH*pucchDelta [i] (7)

[0096] where i represents the index of secondary TRPs, and puschpPower and pucchpPower are the power of PUSCH and PUCCH from the primary TRP. Different filtering coefficients, e.g., gammaPUSCH and gammaPUCCH, are used for PUSCH and PUCCH. The accuracy and scale of PUSCH signal power and PUCCH signal power may differ. Thus, the use of these two different filtering coefficients may align the impact of the PUSCH signal power and the PUCCH signal power. Simulation may be used to obtain the forgetting factor for determining the filtering coefficient.

[0097] If it is detected that the channel quality of the primary TRP is good, for example, the metric of the channel quality is greater than a threshold metric, then there will be no need to switch the primary TRP. In this case, the network device 210 may not perform measures on secondary TRPs. As such, when the channel quality of the primary TRP is good, no TRP switching is tried, thereby reducing processing overhead.

[0098] For example, in the embodiments where the SINR of PUSCH is used to measure the channel quality of the primary TRP, after each PUSCH reception from the primary TRP, the SINR is measured. If the SINR is good enough, then there will be no need to switch the primary TRP, and the network device 210 will not perform measures on secondary TRPs. As such, if the channel quality is good enough, then there may be no need to reselect the primary TRP. Only if channel quality is not good, then the network device 210 may start to reselect a new primary TRP.

[0099] In some embodiments, the first threshold metric for determining whether the channel quality is bad may be lower than the threshold metric for determining whether the channel quality is good. In this way, too frequent TRP switching may be avoided, thereby avoiding the ping-pong effect. If the channel quality is moderate, for example, the metric of the channel quality is between a lower threshold metric and a higher threshold metric, the network device 210 may continue with the current processing.

[0100] In some embodiments, the one or more conditions for triggering the TPR reselection may comprise a second condition that a number of discontinuous transmissions (DTXs) from the terminal device 240 are detected via the first TRP 230-1. For example, if the terminal device 240 suddenly moves out of the coverage of the primary TRP (e.g., the first TRP 230-1) or the terminal  device 240 suffers from sudden interference, then the primary TRP will not receive or decode uplink signals. In this case, there will be a number of DTXs, also called a long DTX. A long DTX may comprise a number of DTXs. The number may be set by the network device 210 or predefined or fixed. In an example, if there are a predefined number (which may be set to 4) of continuous DTX detections in a row, the network device 210 may determine that a long DTX is detected.

[0101] If the long DTX is detected, the primary TRP reselection may be triggered. In some embodiments, if a number of DTX (or a long DTX) is detected via the primary TRP (e.g., the first TRP 230-1) , the network device 210 may start measurements for an uplink signal from the terminal device 240 via one or more TRPs of the plurality of TRPs other than the first TRP 230-1. Based on the measurements, the network device 210 may obtain the metrics of the respective channel qualities of the one or more TRPs of the plurality of TRPs. For example, if a long DTX is detected, then the network device 210 will start measurements of signal power (as an example metric of the channel quality) on all TRP and try to reselect a new primary TRP. If the difference of the second metric of the second channel quality of the second TRP 230-2 with the first metric of the first channel quality of the first TRP 230-1 is greater than the second threshold metric, the network device 210 may decide to switch the primary TRP to the second TRP 230-1.

[0102] If the measurements have already been started, it means that the TRP reselection may have been triggered for example by the first condition that the first metric of the first channel quality of the first TRP 230-1 (as the current primary TRP) is less than the first threshold metric. If both the first and second conditions are met, the network device 210 may determine whether the second metric of the second channel quality of the second TRP 230-2 is greater than a threshold metric (referred to as a third threshold metric) and a difference of the second metric of the second channel quality of the second TRP 230-2 with a first metric of the first channel quality of the first TRP 230-1 is greater than a threshold metric (referred to as a fourth threshold metric) . If so, the network device 210 may switch the primary TRP to the second TRP 230-2.

[0103] The third threshold metric may depend on IpN. For example, if the IpN is larger, the third threshold metric may be set to be higher to mitigate the impact of channel fading. Alternatively, or in addition, the third threshold metric may depend on the number of antennas. For example, if a TRP has more antennas, the third threshold metric may be set to be higher considering that more antennas may bring more signal power gains. Alternatively, or in addition, the third threshold metric may be a fixed value. The fourth threshold metric may be set as a fixed value or set depending on the network deployment.

[0104] For example, if a long DTX is detected in the case that the channel quality of the primary TRP is bad, then the network device 210 may select the best secondary TRP as a new primary TRP on the condition of the power (as an example metric of the channel quality) of the  best secondary TRP exceeds a threshold (which may be determined by IpN and the number of antennas or as a fixed value) and the difference of the power between the best secondary TRP and the primary TRP exceeds another threshold (which may be set as a fixed value) .

[0105] Such TRP reselection based on a long DTX (e.g., in PUSCH) is a mechanism to detect and recover from unexpected conditions. If the terminal device 240 is in silence for a long time, such as several seconds, then the network device 210 will lose the track of an uplink channel quality due to no PUSCH and PUCCH receptions. The terminal device 240 may move to another TRP in the silent period, and then send data in uplink channels. If it happens, then the network device 210 may not detect the signal in the PUSCH and PUCCH of the primary TRP. Thus, the protective procedure based on a long DTX may be used to trigger the TRP reselection. Once a new primary TRP is selected, then the network device 210 may continue to receive an uplink signal from the terminal device 240 via the new primary TRP and determine whether a condition to trigger a new round of TRP reselection.

[0106] In some embodiments, the one or more conditions for triggering the TRP reselection may comprise a third condition that no uplink signal from the terminal device 240 is received via the primary TRP (e.g., the first TRP 230-1) for a time duration. Thus, the primary TRP reselection may be triggered after long silence in uplink. In some embodiments, if it is determined that the third condition is met, the network device 210 may receive an uplink signal from the terminal device via the plurality of TRPs 230-1, …, 230-M. If the uplink signal from the terminal device 240 is decoded via one or more TRPs of the plurality of TRPs, the network device 210 may obtain the metrics of the respective channel qualities of the one or more TRPs of the plurality of TRPs 230-1, …, 230-M. If it is determined that the second metric of the second channel quality of the second TRP 230-2 is highest among the metrics of the respective channel qualities of the one or more TRPs of the plurality of TRPs 230-1, …, 230-M, the network device 210 may switch the primary TRP to the second TRP 230-2.

[0107] For example, if there are no uplink transmissions for a long time, then the primary TRP is no longer trusted. Then, the network device 210 may reselect a new primary TRP based on the uplink signals (such as PUSCH and / or PUCCH signals) from any TRP 230-1, …, 230-M. The network device 210 may decode and measure (PUSCH and / or PUCCH) signals from all TRPs 230-1, …, 230-M. If the PUSCH and / or PUCCH signal is decoded from one or more TRPs, then the network device 210 may select the TRP with the highest signal power (as an example metric of the channel quality) as the new primary TRP (e.g., the second TRP 230-2) , and begin to schedule uplink traffic on the new primary TRP. It is also possible that the measurements are performed by the respective TRPs 230-1, …, 230-M.

[0108] In some embodiments, a timer (also called a silent timer) may be used to avoid the  scenario that the terminal device 240 is moving to the coverage of a new TRP without the notice of the network device 210. In these embodiments, the time duration for determine whether there are no uplink transmissions for a long time is corresponding to a time during running of a timer. In an example, if it is determined that no uplink data from the terminal device 240 is received via the primary TRP (e.g., the first TRP 230-1) during running of the timer, the network device 210 may determine that the third condition is met. Then, the TRP reselection may be initiated.

[0109] In some embodiments, no filtering using history information is needed in the case that no uplink transmissions are received for a long time. Once the PUCCH and / or PUSCH is received, the network device 211 may get the power of the signal from all TRPs 230-1, …, 230-M. Then, based on the real-time values of the measured power, the network device 210 may obtain the TRP with the highest signal power immediately. Thus, the track of an uplink channel quality may be recovered rapidly. It is to be understood that although the primary TRP selection is based on uplink decoding, the selected primary TRP may also be used for downlink transmission.

[0110] It is also to be understood that the thresholds as discussed herein may be set per TRP or per cell. For example, a threshold may have a value specific to a certain TRP or a value common in the coverage area of the network device 210. The values of the thresholds may be set by the network device 210 depending on the network deployment and the channel conditions, or set as a fixed value.

[0111] In addition, there may be the scenario that physical downlink shared channel (PDSCH) data triggers an aperiodic channel state information (A-CSI) report which may be allocated in a PUSCH channel. Thus, hybrid automatic repeat request (HARQ) feedback for the PDSCH will be combined with the A-CSI report in the PUSCH. In some cases, the A-CSI report and the HARQ feedback may fall into the same uplink slot to avoid possible PUSCH grant. In these cases, if the uplink signal to be received or monitored is the HARQ feedback from the terminal device 240, the simultaneous transmissions of the A-CSI report and the HARQ feedback may cause a decoding failure of the HARQ feedback.

[0112] In some embodiments, to avoid such a decoding failure of the HARQ feedback due to the simultaneous transmissions of the A-CSI report and the HARQ feedback, after the network device 210 determines that the third condition is met, the network device 210 may determine whether the HARQ feedback is to be received in a same time period as the A-CSI report from the terminal device 240. If so, the network device 210 may postpone an uplink transmission of the aperiodic channel state information report from the terminal device 240 for a number of time periods. A time period may include one or more slots or other time scales. For example, if the network device 210 (as the scheduler) checks that the A-CSI report and the HARQ feedback will fall into the same uplink slot when the silent timer expires, the network device 210 may postpone  the request for the A-CSI report n slots. n may rely on the length of a Time Division Duplex (TDD) pattern. For example, n may be set as 10 for pattern DDDDDDDDSUU and 5 for pattern DDDSU where “D” represents a downlink slot and “U” represents an uplink slot.

[0113] In some embodiments, after switching the primary TRP to the second TRP 230-2, if it is determined that decoding of an initial uplink transmission from the terminal device 240 via the first TRP 230-1 is failed, the network device 210 may transmit, to the terminal device 240, via the second TRP 230-2, a request for a retransmission of the initial uplink transmission. The request indicates that the retransmission is to have a same transmission parameter as the initial uplink transmission.

[0114] For example, after TRP switching, if the first scheduling request on the new primary TRP is a retransmission due to negative acknowledgement (NACK) for an initial uplink transmission on the old primary TRP, the network device 210 may use a request for the retransmission to indicate that a transmission parameter of the retransmission is the same as the initial transmission. Such a retransmission scheme is similar to a DTX retransmission scheme. In some embodiments, the transmission parameter may include the number of PRBs, a transport block size, a modulation and coding scheme (MCS) , a new data indicator (NDI) , RV indexes, the number of layers and other parameters used for PUSCH transmission may be the same as the initial transmission. Compared with a normal NACK retransmission, it may be ensured that the new primary TRP can obtain the complete uplink data from the terminal device 240 for correct decoding.

[0115] In some embodiments, this retransmission scheme may be used if the new and old primary TRPs are in different processors of the network device 210. If the new and old primary TRPs are in the same processor, the data received on the two primary TRPs may be shared and combined. In this case, the retransmission due to NACK for an initial uplink transmission on the old primary TRP may have different RVs and other transmission parameters.

[0116] In addition, PUSCH repetition type A in the third-generation partnership project (3GPP) Release 16 supports dynamic slot aggregation. It has the benefit that the number of slots that can be aggregated is higher (up to 16 slots) . The number of repetitions may be dynamically signaled in downlink control information (DCI) without radio resource control (RRC) (re) configuration. When a better TRP is detected and the terminal device 240 will switch between the two TRPs, one bundled repetition transmission on the old primary TPR could be still ongoing. The TRP switching may cause the primary TRP changed, and layer 1 (L1) decoding needs to consider how to handle received UL data in old and new TRPs.

[0117] In some embodiments, in the case that the network device 210 receives one or more repetitions of a plurality of repetitions of an uplink transmission from the terminal device 240 via  the old primary TRP (e.g., the first TRP 230-1) before switching the primary TRP to the new TRP (e.g., the second TRP 230-1) , the network device 210 may switch the primary TRP to the second TRP 230-2 after the plurality of repetitions of the uplink transmission are received from the terminal device 240 via the first TRP 230-1. Thus, TRP switching may be suspended until PUSCH repetition finished. In some embodiments, such postponing of the TRP switching may be implemented if the new and old primary TRPs are in different processors of the network device 210. For example, TRP switching between different processors may be only allowed when one bundled repetition transmission is finished on the old primary TRP.

[0118] In some embodiments, after switching the primary TRP to the new primary TRP (e.g., the second TRP 230-2) , the network device 210 may transmit a real time value of timing advance (TA) to the terminal device 240 via the new primary TRP. The real time value of timing advance may be contained in a TA command. Based on the real-time value of the TA, the TA command may be sent to the terminal device 240 quickly after switching to a new primary TRP. If the TA is determined as a filtered value using a current value and a historical value (or history information about the value) , filtering may be restarted to guarantee not using history information of the old primary TRP as the TA between the old and new primary TRPs may have a certain timing distance.

[0119] In some embodiments, after switching the primary TRP to the new primary TRP (e.g., the second TRP 230-2) , the network device 210 may transmit a real time value of a frequency offset (FOE) to the terminal device 240 via the new primary TRP for frequency compensation. The FOE may be used to compensate for frequency errors. The frequency comes from two aspects: one is the unideal factors of a hardware device, including a crystal oscillator; and the other one is the Doppler frequency shift caused by the moving of the terminal device 240. The FOEs for the old and new primary TRPs may be different. In an example, if the FOE is a filtered value using a current value and a historical value (or history information about the value) , the filtering may be restarted to guarantee not using the history information of the old primary TRP.

[0120] Some example processes for TRP selection will be described below with reference to FIG. 4A to FIG. 4E. In these examples, the terminal device 240 operate as a UE, and the network device 210 operates as a gNB.

[0121] FIG. 4A shows an example procedure 400 of primary TRP selection in accordance with some embodiments of the present disclosure.

[0122] As shown in FIG. 4A, in the procedure 400, there are 3 steps for the primary TRP selecting and switching. At Step 1, initial primary TRP selection is implemented. At Step 2, primary TRP reselection during regular uplink transmissions is implemented. At Step 3, primary TRP reselection after long silence in uplink is implemented. These steps may be performed in any order, and certain conditions may trigger the transitions of the steps. As an example, condition 1  is that initial primary TRP selection is implemented in a RACH procedure. Condition 2 is that a UE loses connection with a gNB. Condition 3 is that no uplink transmission occurs for a long time. Condition 4 is that primary TRP selection is implemented by PUCCH.

[0123] At Step 1 of initial primary TRP selection. After synchronization with the gNB, the UE accesses a network via a RACH procedure. Power of a preamble (also called preamble power) on a PRACH may be used as measures for the channel quality to select initial primary TRP.

[0124] At Step 2 of primary TRP reselection during regular uplink transmissions, after the initial primary TRP selection, the gNB will monitor the signal power of the PUSCH and PUCCH (as an example metric of the channel quality) to reselect the TRP with the best channel quality as a new primary TRP when a PUSCH SINR of the primary TRP is lower than a threshold.

[0125] At Step 2A where the channel quality of the primary TRP is good, a SINR may be used to measure the channel quality of the primary TRP. After each PUSCH reception from the primary TRP, the SINR is measured. If the SINR is good enough, for example, which is greater than a high threshold, then there will be no need to switch the primary TRP. So, the gNB will not perform measures on secondary TRPs.

[0126] At Step 2B where the channel quality of primary TRP is bad, if the gNB detects that the SINR of the primary TRP is not good in a PUSCH reception, for example, which is lower than a low threshold, then the gNB will measure the signal power of PUSCH and / or PUCCH of the secondary TRPs. If the power difference of PUSCH and / or PUCCH between the best secondary TRP and the primary TRP is greater than a threshold, then the gNB may switch the primary TRP to the best secondary TRP. The measured power of secondary TRPs can be PUSCH signal power, PUCCH signal power, a combination of PUSCH and PUCCH signal power.

[0127] In some embodiments, a Long DTX in PUSCH (also called a PUSCH long DTX) may be detected. If the UE suddenly moves out of the coverage of the primary TRP or the UE suffers from sudden interferences, then the primary TRP will not receive or decode uplink signals. So, there will be a long PUSCH DTX. PUSCH Long DTX may be decided by a predefined number (for example, which may be set to 4) of continuous DTX detections.

[0128] If the long DTX is detected in Step 2A, then the gNB will start signal power measurement of all the TRPs and try to reselect a new primary TRP as mentioned in Step 2B. If the long DTX is detected in Step 2B, then the gNB will select the best secondary TRP as a new primary TRP on the condition that the power of the best secondary TRP exceeds a threshold (which may be determined by IpN, the number of antennas and a fixed value) and the power difference between the best secondary TRP and the primary TRP exceeds another threshold (e.g., a fixed value) . After primary TRP switching, the procedure 400 continues with Steps 2A and 2B.

[0129] If the UE is in silence for a long time, such as several seconds, then the gNB will lose the track of the uplink channel quality due to no PUSCH receptions. In the silent period, the UE may move to another TRP. Thus, a protective procedure is introduced.

[0130] At Step 3 of primary TRP reselection after long silence in uplink. If there are no uplink transmissions for a long time, then the primary TRP is no longer trusted. The gNB will reselect primary TRP based on the PUSCH and / or PUCCH signals from any TRP. The gNB will decode and measure PUSCH and / or PUCCH signals from all the TRPs. If the PUSCH and / or PUCCH signal is decoded from one or more TRPs, then the gNB will select the TRP with the highest signal power as the new primary TRP, and begin to schedule uplink traffic on this TRP. Once new primary TRP is selected, the procedure 400 continues with Step 2.

[0131] The step transitions as illustrated in FIG. 4A are as follows. The transition Step 1 ->Step 2 occurs after initial primary TRP is selected in a random access procedure. That means that, after the completion of Step 1, the procedure 400 will proceed directly to Step 2. Since the power measurement in PRACH may not be accurate enough and the TRP with the best channel quality may not be selected, the signal power of PUSCH and / or PUCCH may be used to reselect the primary TRP in Step 2.

[0132] The transition Step 2 or Step 3 -> Step 1 occurs when the UE enters a poor coverage environment and loses connection with the gNB, or the UE is leaving the coverage of a current cell and hand over to a new cell during Step 2 or Step 3. The UE needs to resynchronize with the gNB and accesses the network via a RACH procedure.

[0133] The transition Step 2 -> Step 3 occurs when no PUSCH / PUCCH is received within a certain period. It may because that the UE do not have uplink traffic to send, or the UE is in a poor coverage environment. When there are no uplink transmissions for a long time, then the primary TRP is no longer trusted. The gNB will reselect the primary TRP based on the measurement of PUCCH signals from all TRPs.

[0134] The transition Step 3 -> Step 2 occurs when Step 3 completes. That is, once a new primary TRP is selected, the procedure 400 continues with Step 2.

[0135] FIG. 4B shows an example process 410 of initial primary TRP selection in accordance with some embodiments of the present disclosure.

[0136] As shown in FIG. 4B, in the process 410, at Step 1.1, the gNB as a scheduler gets all the preamble samples of all the TRPs from L1 in PRACH slots.

[0137] At Step 1.2, the gNB judges whether the time offset of each sample is lower than the configured limit. If no, which means the UE is out of the configured TRP coverage, then the gNB  discards the preamble.

[0138] At Step 1.3, for each preamble identifier (ID) , the TRP with the best preamble power among the preamble samples from all the TRPs is selected as a temporary primary TRP. Then, the subsequent uplink data for this UE will be scheduled on the temporary primary TRP.

[0139] At Step 1.4, the gNB schedules Msg2, Msg3 and subsequent data for each UE. It is to be noted that the uplink messages are only scheduled on the corresponding temporary primary TRP.

[0140] At Step 1.5, when contention resolution is resolved, that is, HARQ-ACK to Msg4 (which contains Contention Resolution Identity) is successfully received, the temporary primary TRP is set as a primary TRP.

[0141] FIG. 4C shows an example process 420 of primary TRP reselection during regular uplink transmissions in accordance with some embodiments of the present disclosure.

[0142] As shown in FIG. 4B, in the process 420, at Step 2.1, uplink reception is only decoded on the selected primary TRP.

[0143] At Step 2.2, a SINR is used to measure the channel quality of the primary TRP. After each PUSCH reception from the primary TRP, the SINR is measured. The SINR can be the maximum achievable uplink SINR assuming the UE is transmitting with maximum power on one PRB, or the wide band SINR that is the average SINR over all PRBs. Then, SINR or the filtered value of SINR may be used as a measurement to assess the channel quality. To get primary TRP switched more smoothly, the filtered value of the SINR may be used.

[0144] Then, the SINR (or filtered SINR) is compared with the threshold. Two thresholds may be used, which includes an upper threshold and a lower threshold. When the SINR (or filtered SINR) is above the upper threshold, it is considered as a good channel quality. When the SINR (or filtered SINR) is under the lower threshold, it is considered as a bad channel quality. When the SINR (or filtered SINR) is between the lower threshold and upper threshold, it is considered as moderate channel quality.

[0145] If the UE suddenly moves out of the coverage of the primary TRP or the UE suffers from sudden interferences, then the primary TRP will not receive or decode uplink signals. So, there will be a long PUSCH DTX, such as 4 DTXs in a row. For a DTX, there will be no SINR for current PUSCH reception, and the filtered SINR in last reception is used for the channel quality judgement.

[0146] If the long DTX is detected and measurement on all the secondary TRPs are not started, then the gNB will start signal power measurement of all TRPs and try to reselect a new primary  TRP as mentioned in Step 2.3B as discussed in the following paragraphs.

[0147] If the long DTX is detected and measurement on all secondary TRPs are started, then the gNB will select the best secondary TRP as the primary TRP on the condition that the power of the best secondary TRP exceeds a threshold (determined by IpN, the number of antennas and a fixed value) and the power difference between the best secondary TRP and the primary TRP exceeds another threshold (e.g., a fixed value) .

[0148] At Step 2.3, based on the comparison results in Step 2.2, there are three possible subsequent steps as blow. At Step 2.3A, the channel quality is good. There will be no need to switch the primary TRP. The gNB will not perform measures on the secondary TRPs. If measurement on the secondary TRPs has begun, this step should be stopped.

[0149] At Step 2.3B, the channel quality is bad. Then, the gNB will measure the signal power of PUSCH and / or PUCCH of the secondary TRPs and try to find a better TRP. If the measurement of the signal power of PUSCH and / or PUCCH of the secondary TRPs has not been started, the gNB starts the measurement. Because measurements need to be enabled on all the secondary TRPs, more compute resources will be consumed during this stage. The measured power of secondary TRPs can be PUSCH signal power, PUCCH signal power, or a combination of PUSCH and PUCCH signal power.

[0150] Next, the gNB may calculate the power difference between all the secondary TRPs and the primary TRP. The power difference used for the primary TRP switching can be either the real-time value or the filtered value. For filtering measurement samples on PUCCH and PUSCH, the filtering processes as discussed above with reference to Equations (1) to (7) may be applied.

[0151] If the power difference of PUSCH and / or PUCCH between the best secondary TRP and the primary TRP is greater than a threshold, it is a high probability that the UE has moved into the coverage area of the best secondary TRP, then the gNB may switch the primary TRP to the best secondary TRP.

[0152] At Step 2.3C, the channel quality is moderate, the gNB may continue with the same processing as the previous time. If at the previous Step 2.3, the gNB acts according to Step 2.3A, then the gNB continues processing of Step 2.3A. If at the previous Step 2.3, the gNB acts according to Step 2.3B, then the gNB continues processing of Step 2.3B. If there was no previous Step 2.3, which means that it is the first time entering Step 2 from Step 1 or Step 3, then the gNB acts according to Step 2.3B.

[0153] At Step 2.4, the gNB schedules next uplink transmissions based on the primary TRP. After Step 2.4, if new uplink data arrives, a new round of processing related to Step 2 will be triggered.

[0154] FIG. 4D shows an example process 430 of protective handling for a long period without uplink data in accordance with some embodiments of the present disclosure.

[0155] If the UE is in silence for a long time, such as several seconds, then the gNB will lose the track of uplink channel quality due to no PUSCH receptions. In the silent period, the UE may move to another TRP. Thus, this protective procedure is introduced.

[0156] In the process 430, a silent timer is started to trigger the transition to Step 3. Once an uplink PUCCH and PUSCH is received, the timer will be reset. If there is no uplink data during the running this timer, the timer will timeout. As shown in FIG. 4D, at block 432, the gNB determines that the silent timer timeout event arrives. When the timer timeouts, at block 434, the gNB starts to decode of the signal of PUSCH and / or PUCCH from all the TRPs. Then, at block 436, the gNB triggers the execution of Step 3.

[0157] FIG. 4E shows an example process 440 of primary TRP reselection after long silence in uplink in accordance with some embodiments of the present disclosure.

[0158] If there are no uplink transmissions for a long time, then the primary TRP is no longer trusted. The primary TRP needs to be reselected after long silence in uplink. The reselection may be based on the PUSCH and / or PUCCH signals from all the TRPs. As the decoding on all the TRPs has been started in Step 2 before transition to Step 3, the UE can be detected in a possible new TRP.

[0159] As shown in FIG. 4E, in the process 440, at Step 3.1, Once PUCCH and / or PUSCH is received, the gNB may get the signal power of the signal from all the TRPs. The TRP with the highest signal power may be got.

[0160] At Step 3.2, the gNB may switch the primary TRP to the TRP with the highest signal power. If the TRP with the highest signal power is same as the current primary TRP, it is probably the scenario of stationary where the UE has no uplink transmission during the running of the silent timer. In this case, there is no need to switch the primary TRP.

[0161] If the TRP with highest signal power is different from the current primary TRP, it is probably the scenario that the UE has moved to a new TRP. Then, the primary TRP needs to be switched to the TRP with the highest signal power.

[0162] Now, the reliable primary TRP is found. There is no need to decode uplink data on all the TRPs. Then, the decoding on the secondary TRPs may be stopped to save compute resources.

[0163] At Step 3.3, once the primary TRP is determined by Step 3.2, the process 440 continues with Step 2.

[0164] FIG. 5 shows function units of a network device 500 in accordance with some  embodiments of the present disclosure.

[0165] As shown in FIG. 5, the network device 500 comprises a selection unit 510 configured to select a first TRP of a plurality of TRPs in a coverage area of the network device, as a primary TRP for a terminal device. The network device 500 further comprises a reception unit 520 configured to receive an uplink signal from the terminal device via the first TRP. Furthermore, the network device 500 comprises a switching unit 530 configured to based on the reception of the uplink signal via the first TRP, switch the primary TRP to a different second TRP of the plurality of TRPs.

[0166] In some embodiments, the network device 500 may further comprise units for implementing actions or operations according to any of the above-mentioned embodiments described with reference to FIGS. 2 to 4E.

[0167] FIG. 6 shows a network device 600 in accordance with some embodiments of the present disclosure.

[0168] As shown in FIG. 6, the network device 600 may comprise a processor 605 and a memory 610. The memory 610 may contain instructions 615 executable by the processor 605, whereby the network device 600 may be operative to: select a first TRP of a plurality of TRPs in a coverage area of the network device, as a primary TRP for a terminal device; receive an uplink signal from the terminal device via the first TRP; and based on the reception of the uplink signal via the first TRP, switch the primary TRP to a different second TRP of the plurality of TRPs.

[0169] In some embodiments, the network device 600 may further implement actions or operations according to any of the above-mentioned embodiments described with reference to FIGS. 2 to 4E.

[0170] The processor 605 may be any kind of processing component, such as one or more microprocessor or microcontrollers, as well as other digital hardware, which may include digital signal processors (DSPs) , special-purpose digital logic, and the like. The memory 610 may be any kind of storage component, such as read-only memory (ROM) , random-access memory, cache memory, flash memory devices, optical storage devices, etc.

[0171] FIG. 7 shows a computer readable storage medium 700 in accordance with some embodiments.

[0172] As shown in FIG. 7, the computer readable storage medium 700 comprising instructions 615 which when executed by a processor of a device, cause the device to perform any above-mentioned embodiments described with reference to FIGS. 1 to 5.

[0173] The computer readable storage medium 700 may be configured to include memory such as RAM, ROM, programmable read-only memory (PROM) , erasable programmable read-only memory (EPROM) , electrically erasable programmable read-only memory (EEPROM) , magnetic disks, optical disks, floppy disks, hard disks, removable cartridges, or flash drives.

[0174] In some embodiments, an apparatus capable of performing the method 200 or the method 300 may comprise means for performing the respective operations of the method 200 or the method 300. The means may be implemented in any suitable form. For example, the means may be implemented in a circuitry or software module.

[0175] Example System

[0176] FIG. 8 shows an example of a communication system 800 in accordance with some embodiments.

[0177] In the example, the communication system 800 includes a telecommunication network 802 that includes an access network 804, such as a radio access network (RAN) , and a core network 806, which includes one or more core network nodes 808. The access network 804 includes one or more access network nodes, such as network nodes 810a and 810b (one or more of which may be generally referred to as network nodes 810) , or any other similar 3rd Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) access nodes or non-3GPP access points. Moreover, as will be appreciated by those of skill in the art, a network node is not necessarily limited to an implementation in which a radio portion and a baseband portion are supplied and integrated by a single vendor. Thus, it will be understood that network nodes include disaggregated implementations or portions thereof. For example, in some embodiments, the telecommunication network 802 includes one or more Open-RAN (ORAN) network nodes. An ORAN network node is a node in the telecommunication network 802 that supports an ORAN specification (e.g., a specification published by the O-RAN Alliance, or any similar organization) and may operate alone or together with other nodes to implement one or more functionalities of any node in the telecommunication network 802, including one or more network nodes 810 and / or core network nodes 808.

[0178] Examples of an ORAN network node include an open radio unit (O-RU) , an open distributed unit (O-DU) , an open central unit (O-CU) , including an O-CU control plane (O-CU-CP) or an O-CU user plane (O-CU-UP) , a RAN intelligent controller (near-real time or non-real time) hosting software or software plug-ins, such as a near-real time control application (e.g., xApp) or a non-real time control application (e.g., rApp) , or any combination thereof (the adjective “open” designating support of an ORAN specification) . The network node may support a specification by, for example, supporting an interface defined by the ORAN specification, such as an A1, F1, W1, E1, E2, X2, Xn interface, an open fronthaul user plane interface, or an open  fronthaul management plane interface. Moreover, an ORAN access node may be a logical node in a physical node. Furthermore, an ORAN network node may be implemented in a virtualization environment (described further below) in which one or more network functions are virtualized. For example, the virtualization environment may include an O-Cloud computing platform orchestrated by a Service Management and Orchestration Framework via an O-2 interface defined by the O-RAN Alliance or comparable technologies. The network nodes 810 facilitate direct or indirect connection of user equipment (UE) , such as by connecting UEs 812a, 812b, 812c, and 812d (one or more of which may be generally referred to as UEs 812) to the core network 806 over one or more wireless connections.

[0179] Example wireless communications over a wireless connection include transmitting and / or receiving wireless signals using electromagnetic waves, radio waves, infrared waves, and / or other types of signals suitable for conveying information without the use of wires, cables, or other material conductors. Moreover, in different embodiments, the communication system 800 may include any number of wired or wireless networks, network nodes, UEs, and / or any other components or systems that may facilitate or participate in the communication of data and / or signals whether via wired or wireless connections. The communication system 800 may include and / or interface with any type of communication, telecommunication, data, cellular, radio network, and / or other similar type of system.

[0180] The UEs 812 may be any of a wide variety of communication devices, including wireless devices arranged, configured, and / or operable to communicate wirelessly with the network nodes 810 and other communication devices. Similarly, the network nodes 810 are arranged, capable, configured, and / or operable to communicate directly or indirectly with the UEs 812 and / or with other network nodes or equipment in the telecommunication network 802 to enable and / or provide network access, such as wireless network access, and / or to perform other functions, such as administration in the telecommunication network 802.

[0181] In the depicted example, the core network 806 connects the network nodes 810 to one or more hosts, such as host 816. These connections may be direct or indirect via one or more intermediary networks or devices. In other examples, network nodes may be directly coupled to hosts. The core network 806 includes one more core network nodes (e.g., core network node 808) that are structured with hardware and software components. Features of these components may be substantially similar to those described with respect to the UEs, network nodes, and / or hosts, such that the descriptions thereof are generally applicable to the corresponding components of the core network node 808. Example core network nodes include functions of one or more of a Mobile Switching Center (MSC) , Mobility Management Entity (MME) , Home Subscriber Server (HSS) , Access and Mobility Management Function (AMF) , Session Management Function (SMF) ,  Authentication Server Function (AUSF) , Subscription Identifier De-concealing function (SIDF) , Unified Data Management (UDM) , Security Edge Protection Proxy (SEPP) , Network Exposure Function (NEF) , and / or a User Plane Function (UPF) .

[0182] The host 816 may be under the ownership or control of a service provider other than an operator or provider of the access network 804 and / or the telecommunication network 802, and may be operated by the service provider or on behalf of the service provider. The host 816 may host a variety of applications to provide one or more service. Examples of such applications include live and pre-recorded audio / video content, data collection services such as retrieving and compiling data on various ambient conditions detected by a plurality of UEs, analytics functionality, social media, functions for controlling or otherwise interacting with remote devices, functions for an alarm and surveillance center, or any other such function performed by a server.

[0183] As a whole, the communication system 800 of FIG. 8 enables connectivity between the UEs, network nodes, and hosts. In that sense, the communication system may be configured to operate according to predefined rules or procedures, such as specific standards that include, but are not limited to: Global System for Mobile Communications (GSM) ; Universal Mobile Telecommunications System (UMTS) ; Long Term Evolution (LTE) , and / or other suitable 2G, 3G, 4G, 5G standards, or any applicable future generation standard (e.g., 6G) ; wireless local area network (WLAN) standards, such as the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) 802.11 standards (WiFi) ; and / or any other appropriate wireless communication standard, such as the Worldwide Interoperability for Microwave Access (WiMax) , Bluetooth, Z-Wave, Near Field Communication (NFC) ZigBee, LiFi, and / or any low-power wide-area network (LPWAN) standards such as LoRa and Sigfox.

[0184] In some examples, the telecommunication network 802 is a cellular network that implements 3GPP standardized features. Accordingly, the telecommunications network 802 may support network slicing to provide different logical networks to different devices that are connected to the telecommunication network 802. For example, the telecommunications network 802 may provide Ultra Reliable Low Latency Communication (URLLC) services to some UEs, while providing Enhanced Mobile Broadband (eMBB) services to other UEs, and / or Massive Machine Type Communication (mMTC)  / Massive IoT services to yet further UEs.

[0185] In some examples, the UEs 812 are configured to transmit and / or receive information without direct human interaction. For instance, a UE may be designed to transmit information to the access network 804 on a predetermined schedule, when triggered by an internal or external event, or in response to requests from the access network 804. Additionally, a UE may be configured for operating in single-or multi-RAT or multi-standard mode. For example, a UE may operate with any one or combination of Wi-Fi, NR (New Radio) and LTE, i.e. being configured  for multi-radio dual connectivity (MR-DC) , such as E-UTRAN (Evolved-UMTS Terrestrial Radio Access Network) New Radio –Dual Connectivity (EN-DC) .

[0186] In the example, the hub 814 communicates with the access network 804 to facilitate indirect communication between one or more UEs (e.g., UE 812c and / or 812d) and network nodes (e.g., network node 810b) . In some examples, the hub 814 may be a controller, router, content source and analytics, or any of the other communication devices described herein regarding UEs. For example, the hub 814 may be a broadband router enabling access to the core network 806 for the UEs. As another example, the hub 814 may be a controller that sends commands or instructions to one or more actuators in the UEs. Commands or instructions may be received from the UEs, network nodes 810, or by executable code, script, process, or other instructions in the hub 814. As another example, the hub 814 may be a data collector that acts as temporary storage for UE data and, in some embodiments, may perform analysis or other processing of the data. As another example, the hub 814 may be a content source. For example, for a UE that is a VR headset, display, loudspeaker or other media delivery device, the hub 814 may retrieve VR assets, video, audio, or other media or data related to sensory information via a network node, which the hub 814 then provides to the UE either directly, after performing local processing, and / or after adding additional local content. In still another example, the hub 814 acts as a proxy server or orchestrator for the UEs, in particular if one or more of the UEs are low energy IoT devices.

[0200] A UE, when in the form of an Internet of Things (IoT) device, may be a device for use in one or more application domains, these domains comprising, but not limited to, city wearable technology, extended industrial application and healthcare. Non-limiting examples of such an IoT device are a device which is or which is embedded in: a connected refrigerator or freezer, a TV, a connected lighting device, an electricity meter, a robot vacuum cleaner, a voice controlled smart speaker, a home security camera, a motion detector, a thermostat, a smoke detector, a door / window sensor, a flood / moisture sensor, an electrical door lock, a connected doorbell, an air conditioning system like a heat pump, an autonomous vehicle, a surveillance system, a weather monitoring device, a vehicle parking monitoring device, an electric vehicle charging station, a smart watch, a fitness tracker, a head-mounted display for Augmented Reality (AR) or Virtual Reality (VR) , a wearable for tactile augmentation or sensory enhancement, a water sprinkler, an animal-or item-tracking device, a sensor for monitoring a plant or animal, an industrial robot, an Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) , and any kind of medical device, like a heart rate monitor or a remote controlled surgical robot. A UE in the form of an IoT device comprises circuitry and / or software in dependence of the intended application of the IoT device in addition to other components as described in relation to the UE 900 shown in FIG. 9.

[0201] As yet another specific example, in an IoT scenario, a UE may represent a machine or other device that performs monitoring and / or measurements, and transmits the results of such monitoring and / or measurements to another UE and / or a network node. The UE may in this case be an M2M device, which may in a 3GPP context be referred to as an MTC device. As one particular example, the UE may implement the 3GPP NB-IoT standard. In other scenarios, a UE may represent a vehicle, such as a car, a bus, a truck, a ship and an airplane, or other equipment that is capable of monitoring and / or reporting on its operational status or other functions associated with its operation.

[0202] In practice, any number of UEs may be used together with respect to a single use case. For example, a first UE might be or be integrated in a drone and provide the drone’s speed information (obtained through a speed sensor) to a second UE that is a remote controller operating the drone. When the user makes changes from the remote controller, the first UE may adjust the throttle on the drone (e.g. by controlling an actuator) to increase or decrease the drone’s speed.  The first and / or the second UE can also include more than one of the functionalities described above. For example, a UE might comprise the sensor and the actuator, and handle communication of data for both the speed sensor and the actuators.

[0210] The communication interface 1006 is used in wired or wireless communication of signaling and / or data between a network node, access network, and / or UE. As illustrated, the communication interface 1006 comprises port (s)  / terminal (s) 1016 to send and receive data, for example to and from a network over a wired connection. The communication interface 1006 also includes radio front-end circuitry 1018 that may be coupled to, or in certain embodiments a part of, the antenna 1010. Radio front-end circuitry 1018 comprises filters 1020 and amplifiers 1022. The radio front-end circuitry 1018 may be connected to an antenna 1010 and processing circuitry 1002. The radio front-end circuitry may be configured to condition signals communicated between antenna 1010 and processing circuitry 1002. The radio front-end circuitry 1018 may receive digital data that is to be sent out to other network nodes or UEs via a wireless connection. The radio front-end circuitry 1018 may convert the digital data into a radio signal having the appropriate channel and bandwidth parameters using a combination of filters 1020 and / or amplifiers 1022. The radio signal may then be transmitted via the antenna 1010. Similarly, when receiving data, the antenna 1010 may collect radio signals which are then converted into digital data by the radio front-end circuitry 1018. The digital data may be passed to the processing circuitry 1002. In other embodiments, the communication interface may comprise different components and / or different combinations of components.

[0211] In certain alternative embodiments, the network node 1000 does not include separate radio front-end circuitry 1018, instead, the processing circuitry 1002 includes radio front-end circuitry and is connected to the antenna 1010. Similarly, in some embodiments, all or some of the RF transceiver circuitry 1012 is part of the communication interface 1006. In still other embodiments, the communication interface 1006 includes one or more ports or terminals 1016, the radio front-end circuitry 1018, and the RF transceiver circuitry 1012, as part of a radio unit (not shown) , and the communication interface 1006 communicates with the baseband processing circuitry 1014, which is part of a digital unit (not shown) .

[0212] The antenna 1010 may include one or more antennas, or antenna arrays, configured to send and / or receive wireless signals. The antenna 1010 may be coupled to the radio front-end circuitry 1018 and may be any type of antenna capable of transmitting and receiving data and / or signals wirelessly. In certain embodiments, the antenna 1010 is separate from the network node 1000 and connectable to the network node 1000 through an interface or port.

[0213] The antenna 1010, communication interface 1006, and / or the processing circuitry 1002 may be configured to perform any receiving operations and / or certain obtaining operations described herein as being performed by the network node. Any information, data and / or signals may be received from a UE, another network node and / or any other network equipment. Similarly, the antenna 1010, the communication interface 1006, and / or the processing circuitry 1002 may  be configured to perform any transmitting operations described herein as being performed by the network node. Any information, data and / or signals may be transmitted to a UE, another network node and / or any other network equipment.

[0214] The power source 1008 provides power to the various components of network node 1000 in a form suitable for the respective components (e.g., at a voltage and current level needed for each respective component) . The power source 1008 may further comprise, or be coupled to, power management circuitry to supply the components of the network node 1000 with power for performing the functionality described herein. For example, the network node 1000 may be connectable to an external power source (e.g., the power grid, an electricity outlet) via an input circuitry or interface such as an electrical cable, whereby the external power source supplies power to power circuitry of the power source 1008. As a further example, the power source 1008 may comprise a source of power in the form of a battery or battery pack which is connected to, or integrated in, power circuitry. The battery may provide backup power should the external power source fail.

[0215] Embodiments of the network node 1000 may include additional components beyond those shown in FIG. 10 for providing certain aspects of the network node’s functionality, including any of the functionality described herein and / or any functionality necessary to support the subject matter described herein. For example, the network node 1000 may include user interface equipment to allow input of information into the network node 1000 and to allow output of information from the network node 1000. This may allow a user to perform diagnostic, maintenance, repair, and other administrative functions for the network node 1000.

[0216] FIG. 11 is a block diagram of a host 1100, which may be an embodiment of the host 816 of FIG. 8, in accordance with various aspects described herein. As used herein, the host 1100 may be or comprise various combinations hardware and / or software, including a standalone server, a blade server, a cloud-implemented server, a distributed server, a virtual machine, container, or processing resources in a server farm. The host 1100 may provide one or more services to one or more UEs.

[0217] The host 1100 includes processing circuitry 1102 that is operatively coupled via a bus 1104 to an input / output interface 1106, a network interface 1108, a power source 1110, and a memory 1112. Other components may be included in other embodiments. Features of these components may be substantially similar to those described with respect to the devices of previous figures, such as Figures 9 and 10, such that the descriptions thereof are generally applicable to the corresponding components of host 1100.

[0218] The memory 1112 may include one or more computer programs including one or more host application programs 1114 and data 1116, which may include user data, e.g., data generated  by a UE for the host 1100 or data generated by the host 1100 for a UE. Embodiments of the host 1100 may utilize only a subset or all of the components shown. The host application programs 1114 may be implemented in a container-based architecture and may provide support for video codecs (e.g., Versatile Video Coding (VVC) , High Efficiency Video Coding (HEVC) , Advanced Video Coding (AVC) , MPEG, VP9) and audio codecs (e.g., FLAC, Advanced Audio Coding (AAC) , MPEG, G. 711) , including transcoding for multiple different classes, types, or implementations of UEs (e.g., handsets, desktop computers, wearable display systems, heads-up display systems) . The host application programs 1114 may also provide for user authentication and licensing checks and may periodically report health, routes, and content availability to a central node, such as a device in or on the edge of a core network. Accordingly, the host 1100 may select and / or indicate a different host for over-the-top services for a UE. The host application programs 1114 may support various protocols, such as the HTTP Live Streaming (HLS) protocol, Real-Time Messaging Protocol (RTMP) , Real-Time Streaming Protocol (RTSP) , Dynamic Adaptive Streaming over HTTP (MPEG-DASH) , etc.

[0219] FIG. 12 is a block diagram illustrating a virtualization environment 1200 in which functions implemented by some embodiments may be virtualized. In the present context, virtualizing means creating virtual versions of apparatuses or devices which may include virtualizing hardware platforms, storage devices and networking resources. As used herein, virtualization can be applied to any device described herein, or components thereof, and relates to an implementation in which at least a portion of the functionality is implemented as one or more virtual components. Some or all of the functions described herein may be implemented as virtual components executed by one or more virtual machines (VMs) implemented in one or more virtual environments 1200 hosted by one or more of hardware nodes, such as a hardware computing device that operates as a network node, UE, core network node, or host. Further, in embodiments in which the virtual node does not require radio connectivity (e.g., a core network node or host) , then the node may be entirely virtualized. In some embodiments, the virtualization environment 1200 includes components defined by the O-RAN Alliance, such as an O-Cloud environment orchestrated by a Service Management and Orchestration Framework via an O-2 interface.

[0220] Applications 1202 (which may alternatively be called software instances, virtual appliances, network functions, virtual nodes, virtual network functions, etc. ) are run in the virtualization environment 1200 to implement some of the features, functions, and / or benefits of some of the embodiments disclosed herein.

[0221] Hardware 1204 includes processing circuitry, memory that stores software and / or instructions executable by hardware processing circuitry, and / or other hardware devices as  described herein, such as a network interface, input / output interface, and so forth. Software may be executed by the processing circuitry to instantiate one or more virtualization layers 1206 (also referred to as hypervisors or virtual machine monitors (VMMs) ) , provide VMs 1208a and 1208b (one or more of which may be generally referred to as VMs 1208) , and / or perform any of the functions, features and / or benefits described in relation with some embodiments described herein. The virtualization layer 1206 may present a virtual operating platform that appears like networking hardware to the VMs 1208.

[0222] The VMs 1208 comprise virtual processing, virtual memory, virtual networking or interface and virtual storage, and may be run by a corresponding virtualization layer 1206. Different embodiments of the instance of a virtual appliance 1202 may be implemented on one or more of VMs 1208, and the implementations may be made in different ways. Virtualization of the hardware is in some contexts referred to as network function virtualization (NFV) . NFV may be used to consolidate many network equipment types onto industry standard high volume server hardware, physical switches, and physical storage, which can be located in data centers, and customer premise equipment.

[0223] In the context of NFV, a VM 1208 may be a software implementation of a physical machine that runs programs as if they were executing on a physical, non-virtualized machine. Each of the VMs 1208, and that part of hardware 1204 that executes that VM, be it hardware dedicated to that VM and / or hardware shared by that VM with others of the VMs, forms separate virtual network elements. Still in the context of NFV, a virtual network function is responsible for handling specific network functions that run in one or more VMs 1208 on top of the hardware 1204 and corresponds to the application 1202.

[0224] Hardware 1204 may be implemented in a standalone network node with generic or specific components. Hardware 1204 may implement some functions via virtualization. Alternatively, hardware 1204 may be part of a larger cluster of hardware (e.g. such as in a data center or CPE) where many hardware nodes work together and are managed via management and orchestration 1210, which, among others, oversees lifecycle management of applications 1202. In some embodiments, hardware 1204 is coupled to one or more radio units that each include one or more transmitters and one or more receivers that may be coupled to one or more antennas. Radio units may communicate directly with other hardware nodes via one or more appropriate network interfaces and may be used in combination with the virtual components to provide a virtual node with radio capabilities, such as a radio access node or a base station. In some embodiments, some signaling can be provided with the use of a control system 1212 which may alternatively be used for communication between hardware nodes and radio units.

[0225] FIG. 13 shows a communication diagram of a host 1302 communicating via a network  node 1304 with a UE 1306 over a partially wireless connection in accordance with some embodiments. Example implementations, in accordance with various embodiments, of the UE (such as a UE 812a of FIG. 8 and / or UE 900 of FIG. 9) , network node (such as network node 810a of FIG. 8 and / or network node 1000 of FIG. 10) , and host (such as host 816 of FIG. 8 and / or host 1100 of FIG. 11) discussed in the preceding paragraphs will now be described with reference to FIG. 13.

[0226] Like host 1100, embodiments of host 1302 include hardware, such as a communication interface, processing circuitry, and memory. The host 1302 also includes software, which is stored in or accessible by the host 1302 and executable by the processing circuitry. The software includes a host application that may be operable to provide a service to a remote user, such as the UE 1306 connecting via an over-the-top (OTT) connection 1350 extending between the UE 1306 and host 1302. In providing the service to the remote user, a host application may provide user data which is transmitted using the OTT connection 1350.

[0227] The network node 1304 includes hardware enabling it to communicate with the host 1302 and UE 1306. The connection 1360 may be direct or pass through a core network (like core network 806 of FIG. 8) and / or one or more other intermediate networks, such as one or more public, private, or hosted networks. For example, an intermediate network may be a backbone network or the Internet.

[0228] The UE 1306 includes hardware and software, which is stored in or accessible by UE 1306 and executable by the UE’s processing circuitry. The software includes a client application, such as a web browser or operator-specific “app” that may be operable to provide a service to a human or non-human user via UE 1306 with the support of the host 1302. In the host 1302, an executing host application may communicate with the executing client application via the OTT connection 1350 terminating at the UE 1306 and host 1302. In providing the service to the user, the UE's client application may receive request data from the host's host application and provide user data in response to the request data. The OTT connection 1350 may transfer both the request data and the user data. The UE's client application may interact with the user to generate the user data that it provides to the host application through the OTT connection 1350.

[0229] The OTT connection 1350 may extend via a connection 1360 between the host 1302 and the network node 1304 and via a wireless connection 1370 between the network node 1304 and the UE 1306 to provide the connection between the host 1302 and the UE 1306. The connection 1360 and wireless connection 1370, over which the OTT connection 1350 may be provided, have been drawn abstractly to illustrate the communication between the host 1302 and the UE 1306 via the network node 1304, without explicit reference to any intermediary devices and the precise routing of messages via these devices.

[0230] As an example of transmitting data via the OTT connection 1350, in step 1308, the host 1302 provides user data, which may be performed by executing a host application. In some embodiments, the user data is associated with a particular human user interacting with the UE 1306. In other embodiments, the user data is associated with a UE 1306 that shares data with the host 1302 without explicit human interaction. In step 1310, the host 1302 initiates a transmission carrying the user data towards the UE 1306. The host 1302 may initiate the transmission responsive to a request transmitted by the UE 1306. The request may be caused by human interaction with the UE 1306 or by operation of the client application executing on the UE 1306. The transmission may pass via the network node 1304, in accordance with the teachings of the embodiments described throughout this disclosure. Accordingly, in step 1312, the network node 1304 transmits to the UE 1306 the user data that was carried in the transmission that the host 1302 initiated, in accordance with the teachings of the embodiments described throughout this disclosure. In step 1314, the UE 1306 receives the user data carried in the transmission, which may be performed by a client application executed on the UE 1306 associated with the host application executed by the host 1302.

[0231] In some examples, the UE 1306 executes a client application which provides user data to the host 1302. The user data may be provided in reaction or response to the data received from the host 1302. Accordingly, in step 1316, the UE 1306 may provide user data, which may be performed by executing the client application. In providing the user data, the client application may further consider user input received from the user via an input / output interface of the UE 1306. Regardless of the specific manner in which the user data was provided, the UE 1306 initiates, in step 1318, transmission of the user data towards the host 1302 via the network node 1304. In step 1320, in accordance with the teachings of the embodiments described throughout this disclosure, the network node 1304 receives user data from the UE 1306 and initiates transmission of the received user data towards the host 1302. In step 1322, the host 1302 receives the user data carried in the transmission initiated by the UE 1306.

[0232] One or more of the various embodiments improve the performance of OTT services provided to the UE 1306 using the OTT connection 1350, in which the wireless connection 1370 forms the last segment.

[0233] In an example scenario, factory status information may be collected and analyzed by the host 1302. As another example, the host 1302 may process audio and video data which may have been retrieved from a UE for use in creating maps. As another example, the host 1302 may collect and analyze real-time data to assist in controlling vehicle congestion (e.g., controlling traffic lights) . As another example, the host 1302 may store surveillance video uploaded by a UE. As another example, the host 1302 may store or control access to media content such as video,  audio, VR or AR which it can broadcast, multicast or unicast to UEs. As other examples, the host 1302 may be used for energy pricing, remote control of non-time critical electrical load to balance power generation needs, location services, presentation services (such as compiling diagrams etc. from data collected from remote devices) , or any other function of collecting, retrieving, storing, analyzing and / or transmitting data.

[0234] In some examples, a measurement procedure may be provided for the purpose of monitoring data rate, latency and other factors on which the one or more embodiments improve. There may further be an optional network functionality for reconfiguring the OTT connection 1350 between the host 1302 and UE 1306, in response to variations in the measurement results. The measurement procedure and / or the network functionality for reconfiguring the OTT connection may be implemented in software and hardware of the host 1302 and / or UE 1306. In some embodiments, sensors (not shown) may be deployed in or in association with other devices through which the OTT connection 1350 passes; the sensors may participate in the measurement procedure by supplying values of the monitored quantities exemplified above, or supplying values of other physical quantities from which software may compute or estimate the monitored quantities. The reconfiguring of the OTT connection 1350 may include message format, retransmission settings, preferred routing etc. ; the reconfiguring need not directly alter the operation of the network node 1304. Such procedures and functionalities may be known and practiced in the art. In certain embodiments, measurements may involve proprietary UE signaling that facilitates measurements of throughput, propagation times, latency and the like, by the host 1302. The measurements may be implemented in that software causes messages to be transmitted, in particular empty or ‘dummy’ messages, using the OTT connection 1350 while monitoring propagation times, errors, etc.

[0235] Although the computing devices described herein (e.g., UEs, network nodes, hosts) may include the illustrated combination of hardware components, other embodiments may comprise computing devices with different combinations of components. It is to be understood that these computing devices may comprise any suitable combination of hardware and / or software needed to perform the tasks, features, functions and methods disclosed herein. Determining, calculating, obtaining or similar operations described herein may be performed by processing circuitry, which may process information by, for example, converting the obtained information into other information, comparing the obtained information or converted information to information stored in the network node, and / or performing one or more operations based on the obtained information or converted information, and as a result of said processing making a determination. Moreover, while components are depicted as single boxes located within a larger box, or nested within multiple boxes, in practice, computing devices may comprise multiple different physical components that make up a single illustrated component, and functionality may  be partitioned between separate components. For example, a communication interface may be configured to include any of the components described herein, and / or the functionality of the components may be partitioned between the processing circuitry and the communication interface. In another example, non-computationally intensive functions of any of such components may be implemented in software or firmware and computationally intensive functions may be implemented in hardware.

[0236] In certain embodiments, some or all of the functionality described herein may be provided by processing circuitry executing instructions stored on in memory, which in certain embodiments may be a computer program product in the form of a non-transitory computer-readable storage medium. In alternative embodiments, some or all of the functionality may be provided by the processing circuitry without executing instructions stored on a separate or discrete device-readable storage medium, such as in a hard-wired manner. In any of those particular embodiments, whether executing instructions stored on a non-transitory computer-readable storage medium or not, the processing circuitry can be configured to perform the described functionality. The benefits provided by such functionality are not limited to the processing circuitry alone or to other components of the computing device, but are enjoyed by the computing device as a whole, and / or by end users and a wireless network generally.
