Description

[0001] Campfire frying pan and its use

[0002] Field of the invention

[0003] The invention relates to a campfire cookware to be mounted with a shaft or a handle, and is meant for use over an open fire in an outdoor fireplace. More specifically the invention relates to a frying pan, a campfire frying pan, for frying, roasting or heating food, where an important part is a campfire shaft / handle connector element with an interior square tubular profile for inserting and fixation of an arbitrary but suitable shaft / handle without any necessary use of tools or a fastening device.

[0004] Background of the invention

[0005] The need to fry, roast and heat food in a frying pan over an open fire, outdoors, e.g. at a campfire or a fire pit where wood or charcoal is fired, is today sought to be covered by using traditional frying pans with a short handle, frying pans with a long shaft / handle, frying pans with a foldable handle, frying pans with removable handle and frying pans to use with a self- made wooden shaft / handle. Most often these types of frying pans require either a portable grill grate, and / or a tripod / stand / rack when in use.

[0006] In general these types of cooking equipment have certain limitations because they individually may be dependent on another specific cookware or tool to be used, and as a result alone or in total they can be either heavy, long and / or generally difficult or impractical to handle during transport, during use or during cleaning after use.

[0007] Most of these frying pans and / or depended cookware and tools are manufactured as a complete unit, where a further separation into smaller parts, e.g. to facilitate easier transport or cleaning, is either not possible or difficult. And as a consequence of the lack of separation possibility, a replacement, for example, of a damaged shaft or handle belonging to an individual frying pan will therefore be impossible, extremely difficult or economically relatively expensive. And a possible use of another shaft or handle than the original for instance one with a different length and / or other exterior specifications will also most often be extremely difficult. There are transportable grill grates, stands and racks, some of the disadvantage to these are; they are difficult to clean after use, in addition grill grates, stands and racks will also often be relatively heavy and relatively large, which can makes transport difficult.

[0008] There are frying pans with a short handle and common to these are the dependency of a stand or a grill grate when in use and this most often resulting in the user to squatting close to the fire and the face or hands are then potentially at risk of being exposed to smoke and heat.

[0009] There are frying pans with long handles and common to these are they a difficult to handle during transport and cleaning due to the long handle.

[0010] There are frying pans with a foldable handle and common to these are they are either relatively heavy and / or the handle part is quite flimsy and not that durable, and the handle part can be difficult to replace if a malfunction occurs.

[0011] There are frying pans with a removable handle and common to these are they are most often depended on a specific shaft / handle with a specific fastening device, which also can make transport a bit difficult regarding weight and volume.

[0012] There are frying pans to be used with a self-made shaft / handle. The shaft / handle connector element used on these types of frying pans are having either a round tube interior or a round and conic shaped tube interior, and to be able to fixate the self-made shaft / handle in these kind of tubes, then a fastening device and / or tools is required. And the self-made process of the shaft / handle itself most often also requires a tool e.g. a knife to make it suitable to be used with the round (and conic) shaped tube.

[0013] There are thus significant limitations and / or disadvantages to the existing campfire cookware and tools, and thus the need for the development of a new type / design.

[0014] Prior art a) Utility stick in US 2015 / 0223636 Al describes in this context a frying pan with a removable handle, where the campfire cookware consisting of a specific round shaft in several parts (preferred material; aluminum), where each part has a specific threaded male ferrule in one end. On the shaft you can mount a number of different attachments whereof one is an attachment toaster tray, which in this context could be used as a frying pan. The toaster tray (frying pan) is meant to be attached to the shaft by its shaft / handle connector element which has the corresponding female ferrule with the internal thread at one end. The shaft / handle connector element consists of a piece of metal that has a hexagonal prism shaped exterior and where the specific female threaded ferrule is inside one end for mounting on the threaded male part of the specific shaft. b) Jagarstekpanna original SI and S2 sold on the Internet by https: / / stabilother .se, are two almost identical frying pans which both have a round tube made of steel as a handle part. The round tube interior can also have the function of a shaft / handle connector element, wherein it is possible to insert a piece of wood as an extension of the handle, the wooden extension of the handle can be of the arbitrary but suitable type, however a fastening device e.g. a screw and a tool (screwdriver) is required to adequately secure the wooden extension fixated in the tube when in use, and a knife is most often necessary to manipulate the shape of the wooden extension to get a snug fit of the end to be inserted into the round tube. c) Detachable handle for pots and pans in US 2494159 A (1950) describes in this context a frying pan with a removable handle, where a special socket equipped bracket is connect to the exterior side of the sidewall of the pan and wherein a handle with the corresponding male part in one end can be inserted into the socket and lock by some locking members integrated with the male part. The special socket is best described as a bore with a square opening and a pyramidal stump interior widest at the opening. d) Removal handle for frying pan in KR 101626753 Bl describes in this context a frying pan with a removable handle, where a coupling hole is placed on the exterior side of the sidewall of the pan. The coupling hole have what could be described as a square tubular interior, however it appear that the depth of the hole is smaller than the width of the squared hole and thereby it would be more correct to describe the hole as a bore with a square profile and interior. The coupling hole have some separate locking holes where some corresponding locking members on the removable handle can be lock into when inserted in the coupling hole. Disadvantages of the prior art a) The shaft / handle and the attachment tray (pan) each having a specific ferrule and the cookware with the specific shaft / handle can be difficult to transport both in terms of weight and volume. And a new / extra specific shaft must be purchased to be able to use more than one of the attachments at a time or if the shaft is damaged. It is not possible to use another handle if it do not have the required specific ferrule in one end. b) The dependency of a fastening device (screw) and a tool (screwdriver) and most often a knife, to be able to make the extension handle part usable means, that the total weight is higher than necessary. The screw or the screwdriver could also be missing at the campfire site and the knife is not always enough to make a piece of wood to fixate in a round (conic shaped) tube especially when the tube and the wood inside the tube is heating up when in use and moisture evaporate from the wood, which will make it shrink a bit and no longer be fixated adequately in the round tube to be stable during use. c) The coupling hole on the sidewall of the frying pan requires a handle with the corresponding male part, which means it can be difficult in terms of weight and volume when transported. The Locking members are in danger of being damaged when transported.

[0015] The inwards tapering and pyramidal shaped interior would make it almost impossible to fixate other handles without the corresponding male part in one end or some big modifications made with tools. d) The special socket on the sidewall of the frying pan requires a handle with the corresponding male part, which means it can be difficult in terms of weight and volume when transported. The Locking members are in danger of being damaged when transported.

[0016] The relatively small depth of the socket means it would be almost impossible to fixate other handles without the corresponding male part in one end or some big modifications made with tools. Object of the invention

[0017] When regarding the disadvantages mentioned in the previous sections, including disadvantages of the prior art, then an object of the invention can be described as; to provide a new type or a new design of a campfire shaft / handle connector element to be integrated with a frying pan, for thereby being able to be mounted on / with an arbitrary but suitable shaft / handle, which alleviates one or more of the disadvantages that are / may be in the known technique and prior art. In particular, it can be seen as an aim to produce a simply constructed and thus robust, light and affordable campfire shaft / handle connector element with a long lifespan without significant maintenance.

[0018] The purpose is fulfilled as described by the accompanying claims. Specifically, it can be described that the size of the new campfire shaft / handle connector element according to the invention, in one of the preferred embodiment; 5-6 cm in length and a weight of approx. 50 grams, makes the campfire shaft / handle connector element relevant to be used integrated not just with a frying pan but into most relevant campfire cookware and tools without compromising regarding to weight or volume during transport or the handling in general when in use. And the simple and robust design makes it easy to handle during cleaning. The fact that the preferred material for the campfire shaft / handle connector element is stainless steel means that it is very robust and that it has a long service life without significant maintenance. The simple design according to the invention and the material means that it is affordable. In addition, the approximately square interior tube part of the campfire shaft / handle connector element makes it easy to assemble / disassemble and to attach to an arbitrary but suitable shaft, this with an optional length, if necessary by any means of a minor adjustment, e.g. made with a knife, of the dimensions of the shaft in the end where to be inserted. And it is an optional possibility to drill a 5 mm hole in one of the sides of the tube to thereby being able to insert a fastening device e.g. a screw, if a shaft is chosen to be mounted for long term use.

[0019] Overall, the provision of a frying pan with a campfire shaft / handle connector element according to the invention will therefore be able to make transport a lot easier regarding to the weight and volume partly because a shaft / handle most of the time is no longer necessary to take along and partly because the dependency of a stand or grill grate is almost eliminated and partly because a fastening device and necessary tool for this is not needed. And with the use of an arbitrary but suitable shaft with an optional length, then issues with smoke and heat to the face and hands can become less due to the choice of a longer shaft. And the choice of a longer shaft can also reduce the amount of necessary squatting during use.

[0020] Detailed description of the invention

[0021] Basic experimental development, prototype production and testing

[0022] During the development of the invention, a number of prototypes have been produced, where the focus has been on 1) the campfire shaft / handle connector element; A) Round tube profile vs square tube profile, B) The material thickness of the square tube, C) The dimension of the square of the tube interior profile, D) The length of the square tube, E) Retaining force, testing of the Stone-Deer Principle and 2) The location of the campfire shaft / handle connector element in relation to its connection with the side wall of the frying pan.

[0023] 1) The campfire shaft / handle connector element

[0024] A) During the development process of the invention there was a focus on a round tube profile vs a square tube profile according to which type is most advantageous compared to be mounted on an arbitrary but suitable shaft, branches of hazel and birch were being used for this purpose. Regarding the round tube profile, it was during test quickly determined that it was necessary both to modify the tip of the branch used as shaft, with a knife and to use a sort of fastener e.g. a nail or a screw to ensure adequate retention of the connector element to the shaft when in use. The square tube profile could on the other hand be mounted and fixed stably on a branch of hazel or birch without the use of a fastener or without the need to modify the tip of the branch with a knife. The possibility of using an arbitrary but suitable branch is present because, it is taken advantage of the fact that the diagonal of the square tube is larger than the sides and thus a branch of wood often is slightly oval in cross-sectional profile or is having a small side branch collar that could be chosen to be near the tip of the branch to be inserted into the square profile tube. And when inserted then done with the widest part of the branch or the side branch collar in the diagonal and then twisted 30 - 45 degrees horizontally around inside the square tube and thereby get fixated by friction (now called; the Stone Deer principle). B) During the development process of the invention 4 different sizes of material thickness of the square tube have been tested in terms of robustness and dimensional stability; 0,5 mm, 1 mm, 1,5 mm and 2 mm.

[0025] The test showed that the 0,5 mm easily but also the 1 mm thickness could be compromised regarding the robustness and dimensional stability, this if getting bruised or battered, e.g. if it is dropped or bumped on boulders or other things during use or transport. This were not an issue with the 1,5 mm and the 2 mm material thickness, where only superficial scratches occurred during the test.

[0026] The 2 mm thickness means more weight and higher fabrication costs without significant advantages regarding robustness and dimensional stability when compared to the 1,5 mm material thickness. Therefore the 1,5 mm material thickness is preferred.

[0027] C) During the development process of the invention, 3 sizes of the square of the tube interior profile have been tested with the interior size of; 17 mm x 17 mm, 22 mm x 22 mm and 27 mm x 27 mm, and it was quickly established that a square of 22 mm x 22 mm (interior) is the most optimal size to use with most types of campfire cookware and tools included a frying pan, since here you must use a shaft with a dia. of approx. 22-25 mm, which 1) has a material strength and stiffness that makes it stable during use both seen in relation to the shaft itself and in relation to the retaining force between the shaft and the campfire shaft / handle connector element, 2) is comfortable to hold in the hands when in use and 3) has a weight that is comfortable to handle during use.

[0028] In the case of the other two sizes of the square, the shaft will have disadvantages compared to 1), 2) or 3).

[0029] However, it should be noted that with a heavier frying pan for use on a grill grate or with a stand, a tube with 27 mm in the interior square will work just fine, as a shorter and thicker handle could be preferable in that case.

[0030] D) In addition to the three square sizes mentioned, different lengths of the square tube have been tested during the development process, The length have been varied between 3 cm and 15 cm until it was determined that a length of approx. 5-6 cm is the preferred length of s the square tube to be integrated with a campfire frying pan, as this length ensures good stability when mounted on a suitable shaft or an arbitrary but suitable shaft, in addition the length of approx. 5-6 cm, means the weight of the connector element is approx. 50 grams.

[0031] A shorter length of the square tube will mean poorer stability after mounting on a shaft and a longer length also means more weight and volume which in total can make transport a bit more difficult, in addition, longer length and more weight will also make it more expensive in manufacturing cost. A longer length could thou make the shaft more resistant to the heat and flames from the fire, but the arbitrary shaft is not meant for long term use and could with a little effort easy be replaced if it's getting slightly burnt and compromised thereby.

[0032] E) Retaining force, testing of the Stone-Deer Principle

[0033] Testing of an arbitrary but suitable shaft in relation to retaining force, when inserted and fixated in a campfire shaft / handle connector element in the preferred embodiment as an integrated part of a selected piece of cookware equipment, made of stainless steel; a hook attachment (13) was selected for this test and branches of hazel and birch approx. 22 mm dia. were used. The hook attachment is the better choice to make a pull / lift of a specific item like a bucket with a handle wherein weights controlled can be carried under the test.

[0034] Which shape of an arbitrary but suitable wooden branch did work as a stable shaft / handle: 1) a slightly oval profile of the end to be inserted, 2) a side branch collar 1-4 cm from the tip of the end to be inserted, 3) a form of a curvature 1-4 cm from the tip of the end to be inserted and 4) any combination of 1), 2) and 3).

[0035] - A suitable branch manipulated e.g. with a knife into an approx, shape of 1), 2), 3) or 4) works as well.

[0036] The widest part of the suitable branch (1, 2, 3 or 4) is the one to be inserted into the diagonal of the connector element (fig. 5) and then a twisting of the branch (30-45 degrees) will make it fixated to the campfire shaft / handle connector element by friction. When testing an average arbitrary but suitable branch (1, 2, 3 or 4) then it took a direct pulling force (lift) of +25 kg. to separate the branch from the campfire shaft / handle connector element, and with a snug fit selected arbitrary but suitable branch, it took a direct pulling force (lift) of +50 kg to separate the branch from the connector element. Something to consider is, that some kind of small tap or knob on the interior side of the tube e.g. in the center of one or more of the square's sides could make the retaining force even higher (this could properly also be useful in a round tube), albeit this is not considered necessary for everyday use. And it is an optional possibility to drill e.g. a 5 mm hole in one side of the tube to be able to insert a fastening device e.g. a screw, if a shaft is chosen to be mounted for long term use.

[0037] 2) The location of the campfire shaft / handle connector element in relation to its connection with the side wall of the frying pan.

[0038] With the object of the invention in mind it was during the development process tested which distance between the tube part of the campfire shaft / handle connector element and the side wall of the frying pan that worked the best, the distance tested was in the range 0 - 20 cm between the side wall and the edge of the tube part closest to the side wall and it was quickly established, that the tube part of the campfire shaft / handle connector element should be placed and attach e.g. by welding as close to the sidewall of the frying pan as possible to give the most stability and best balance when in use. This will also at the same time minimize the volume to transport. The campfire shaft / handle connector element can as an alternative be attached in a pivot joint and thereby be foldable and it would minimize the volume even more - the pivot joint could though compromise the durability a bit as the pivot joint would be the weakest part of the campfire frying pan.

[0039] To minimize the weight of the frying pan, a thinner material thickness of the frying pan and sidewall could be used but then some reinforcements with, for example, steel rods under the campfire shaft / handle connector element most likely will be necessary to ensure durability and stability during use. It is notable that there often are these kind of steel bars used on some ready-made frying pans, which make up as the connecting part of the original handle, where the handle with a little effort can be shortened or cut off, so that the campfire shaft / handle connector element can be placed on top of the shortened steel bars and attached to these by welding and welded to the side wall of the frying pan itself.

[0040] To make it comfortable during use, the angle between the frying surface of the frying pan and the shaft / handle could be an important factor. If it is assumed that when using the frying pan you either stand up or sit on, for example, a bench with a seat height of 45 cm, and that the distance to the campfire is approx. 50 cm from the knees (horizontally), then a shaft / ha nd le of 80-100 cm will be suitable and comfortable, and with these measurements in mind, an angle between the campfire shaft / handle connector element and the frying surface of 20-30 degrees will be optimal for an average person 175 cm tall, as the shaft / handle then will be at the natural height of the hands when relaxing them and the arms. If there is a stand or grill grate available at the campfire site, then a shorter shaft / handle of course could be used if chosen so.

[0046] Fig. 5 shows a campfire shaft / handle connector element (2) with an oval branch of wood (20) inside the square tube part of the connector element, in a perpendicular cross-section.

[0047] Figure description

[0048] Fig. 1 shows a campfire frying pan (3) according to the invention. The campfire frying pan has a frying surface (1) and a side wall (6) which is connected with a campfire shaft / handle connector element (2) by welding on the exterior side of the tube part. The campfire shaft / handle connector element (2) has a square / approx. square tubular interior in its longitudinal direction. The edge (4) on the connector element is the one closest to the side wall (6) and the edge (7) on the connector element has the largest distance to the side wall (6). The length of the shaft / handle connector element is less than 15 cm measured between the two edge (4,7). It appears clearly that the tube part of the connector element (2) is pointing in a direction out from the frying surface of the campfire frying pan and that a suitable shaft / handle can be inserted easily into the tube part.

[0049] Fig. 2 shows a campfire frying pan (3) according to the invention. A pair of steel bars (8) is attached to the exterior side of the side wall (6) at the point (9) which is just below the edge (4) of the campfire shaft / handle connector element. The two steel bars is a part of the connection between the side wall (6) and the exterior side of the campfire shaft / handle connector element (2). The edge (4) on the connector element is the closest to the edge (5) of the side wall (6) and a welded connection is present between the two edges (4,5). And the edge (7) on the connector element has the largest distance to the edge (5) of the side wall (6). The length of the shaft / handle connector element is less than 15 cm measured between the two edge (4,7) and the distance between the edge (5) and the edge (7) is less than 15 cm. It appears clearly that the tube part of the connector element (2) is pointing in a direction out from the frying surface of the campfire frying pan and that a shaft / handle can be inserted easily into the tube part.

[0050] Fig. 3 shows a campfire frying pan (3) according to the invention. A pair of steel bars (8) is attached to the exterior side of the side wall (6) at the point (9) which is below the edge (4) of the campfire shaft / handle connector element. The two steel bars is a part of the connection between the side wall (6) and the exterior side of the campfire shaft / handle connector element (2). The edge (4) on the connector element is the closest to the edge (5) of the side wall (6) and the edge (7) on the connector element has the largest distance to the edge (5) of the side wall (6). The length of the campfire shaft / handle connector element (2) is less than 15 cm measured between the two edge (4,7) and the distance between the edge

[0051] (5) and the edge (7) is less than 25 cm. It appears clearly that the tube part of the campfire shaft / handle connector element (2) is pointing in a direction out from the frying surface of the campfire frying pan and that a shaft / handle can be inserted easily into the tube part.

[0052] Fig. 4 shows a campfire shaft / handle connector element (2) as an integrated part of a hook attachment head (13), it appears that the hook (10) is positioned so that a shaft can be inserted into the campfire connector element without any particular difficulty and without compromising the hooks capability to hold e.g. a handle of a kettle, a hanging pot or a weight for testing the retention capability of a shaft / handle inserted into the tube part of the campfire shaft / handle connector element.

[0053] Fig. 5 shows a perpendicular cross-section of a campfire shaft / handle connector element (2) with a slightly oval piece of wood (20) fitted inside the connector elements squared tube, it quite clearly appears that the widest part (21) of the oval shaped branch of wood is placed in one of the diagonal corners (22) of the square tube. Realization of the invention in practice

[0054] A realization of the procedure; connecting a campfire shaft / handle connector element (2), in one of the preferred embodiment, with a handleless frying pan, requires a TIG welding apparatus, e.g. a square piece of stainless steel profile tube 5-6 cm in length and 22 mm x 22 mm in the interior square. And then the handleless stainless steel frying pan is connected with two 6-10 mm steel bars approx. 4 cm in length and 2-3 cm apart, either by riveting or welding them to the exterior side of the side wall, preferable the steel bars should have an angle of 20-30 degrees upwards in relation to the frying surface. After this procedure the campfire shaft / handle connector element is placed in its longitudinal direction on top of the two steel bars with a diagonal corner down in the middle between the two steel bars, this as close to the side wall of the frying pan as possible, then welded to the steel bars and the side wall. After welding the now realized campfire frying pan (3) is then sanded and polished, and will be ready to use.

[0055] Summary

[0056] The invention relates to a campfire cookware with form as a frying pan for use over an open fire outdoors, a campfire frying pan (3). More specific, a frying pan without a handle but with the possibility of fitting a suitable shaft / handle according to one's own choice due to the campfire shaft / handle connector element (2) which is connected with the side wall of the frying pan. The campfire shaft / handle connector element (2) has a square tubular interior and thereby the Campfire pan (3) is intended for mounting on or with an arbitrary but suitable shaft / handle, and is thereby intended to function and be used handheld under the process of frying, roasting or heating food at a campfire.

[0057] There are disadvantages to existing frying pans for food preparation over an open fire outdoors, as existing frying pans often are either heavy, are large in volume, are depended on a stand / grill grate / tool and thereby generally are difficult to handle during transport, use or cleaning after use.

[0058] Overall, the provision of a new designed campfire frying pan according to the invention will make transport a lot easier regarding the weight and volume partly because a shaft most of the time is no longer necessary to bring along and particularly because less cookware and tools are needed.

[0059] In addition, the campfire frying pan with its campfire shaft / handle connector element according to the invention is robustly constructed, easy to; use and clean and has a long service life without significant maintenance.
