[0014] Section headings are used in the present document only for ease of understanding and do not limit scope of the embodiments to the section in which they are described. Furthermore, while embodiments are described with reference to 5G examples, the disclosed techniques may be applied to wireless systems that use protocols other than 5G or 3GPP protocols.

[0015] FIG. 1 shows an example of a wireless communication system (e.g., a long term evolution (LTE) , 5G or NR cellular network) that includes a BS 120 and one or more user equipment (UE) 111, 112 and 113. In some embodiments, the uplink transmissions (131, 132, 133) can include uplink control information (UCI) , higher layer signaling (e.g., UE assistance information or UE capability) , or uplink information. In some embodiments, the downlink transmissions (141, 142, 143) can include DCI or high layer signaling or downlink information. The UE may be, for example, a smartphone, a tablet, a mobile computer, a machine to machine (M2M) device, a terminal, a mobile device, an Internet of Things (IoT) device, and so on.

[0016] FIG. 2 is a block diagram representation of a portion of an apparatus based on some embodiments of the disclosed technology. An apparatus 205 such as a network device or a base station or a wireless device (or UE) , can include processor electronics 210 such as a microprocessor that implements one or more of the techniques presented in this document. The apparatus 205 can include transceiver electronics 215 to send and / or receive wireless signals over one or more communication interfaces such as antenna (s) 220. The apparatus 205 can include other communication interfaces for transmitting and receiving data.  Apparatus 205 can include one or more memories (not explicitly shown) configured to store information such as data and / or instructions. In some implementations, the processor electronics 210 can include at least a portion of the transceiver electronics 215. In some embodiments, at least some of the disclosed techniques, modules or functions are implemented using the apparatus 205.

[0017] In a wireless communication network, the next generation radio access network (NG-RAN) architecture may be split by the presence of a single logical gNodeB (gNB) -central unit (CU) -control plane (CP) connected to multiple logical gNB-distributed units (DUs) and logical gNB-CU-user planes (Ups) , for each split gNB. In addition, the failures at the gNB-CU (e.g., gNB-CU-CP) may cause interruption of multi-user plane (UP) traffic and disconnection of multiple UEs. The disclosed technology can be implemented in some embodiments to address these issues.

[0018] In the current 5G NR system, a base station or the network (NW) may configure periodic or semi-persistent beam reporting so that beam reporting is frequently activated (e.g., multiple candidate beams and corresponding layer-1 reference-signal received power values (L1-RSRPs) , or the network may frequently trigger aperiodic beam reporting by a wireless device or user equipment (UE) to timely acquire the best or preferred beam for data / control transmissions. However, the current mechanism requires large UL resources for beam reporting and the corresponding DL control signaling. In addition, when channel properties change rapidly, the network cannot guarantee that the best or preferred beam will be acquired in a timely manner, so the information obtained through beam reporting may not be the most recent information. To address such issues, the disclosed technology can be implemented in some embodiments to allow a wireless device or UE to initiate beam reporting. Specifically, the disclosed technology can be implemented in some embodiments to provide or define: (1) the procedure of user equipment (UE) initiated beam reporting; (2) the trigger event for the UE initiated beam reporting; (3) the content of UE initiated beam reporting; and (4) the container / medium of the UE initiated beam reporting.

[0019] In some implementations, a wireless device or UE can be configured to carry out different measurements (e.g., channel state measurement) , and in some cases the UE can report such measurements to the network. In some implementations, the measurements and the corresponding reporting can be configured by a report configuration. For example, in the 3GPP specification, the measurements and the corresponding reporting can be configured by CSI-ReportConfig. In some implementations, each report configuration or resource configuration may indicate: a specific quantity or a set of specific quantities to be reported;  downlink resource (s) on which measurements should be carried out in order to derive the specific quantity or the set of specific quantities to be reported; and / or how the actual reporting is carried out, for example, when the reporting is done and what uplink physical channel is used for the reporting.

[0020] In some implementations, a report configuration indicates a quantity or a set of quantities that the UE is supposed to report. The report configuration may indicate a received signal strength, such as: layer-1 reference-signal received power (L1-RSRP) , layer-1 signal-to-interference-and-noise ratio (L1-SINR) , layer-1 reference-signal received quality (L1-RSRQ) , etc. In addition, a report configuration may also indicate the set of downlink signals or, more generally, the set of downlink resources on which measurements should be carried out in order to derive the specific quantity or the set of specific quantities to be reported. This is done by associating the report configuration with one or several resource sets. Measurements and the corresponding reporting are carried out on a set of channel state information reference signal (CSI-RS) resources, channel state information interference measurement (CSI-IM) resources or synchronization signal (SS) blocks (SSB) , where each resource is associated with a specific beam.

[0021] In some implementations, the reporting type of beam reporting can be periodic, semi-persistent or aperiodic. Periodic reporting is always done on a physical uplink control channel (PUCCH) . Thus, in the case of periodic reporting, the resource configuration includes information about a periodically available PUCCH resource to be used for the reporting. In the case of semi-persistent reporting, a UE is configured with periodically occurring reporting instances in the same way as periodic reporting. Nevertheless, actual reporting can be activated and deactivated by means of Medium Access Control (MAC) signaling (e.g., MAC control element (CE) ) . Similar to periodic reporting, semi-persistent reporting can be performed for periodically assigned PUCCH resources. Alternatively, semi-persistent reporting can be performed for semi-persistently allocated physical uplink shared channel (PUSCH) resources. Semi-persistent reporting may be used for larger reporting payloads. Aperiodic reporting is explicitly triggered by means of downlink control information (DCI) signaling, more specifically within a CSI-request field within the uplink scheduling grant (DCI format 0_x) . Aperiodic reporting is always performed for the scheduled PUSCH resources and thus requires an uplink scheduling grant.

[0022] In some embodiments, the term “beam state” can be used to indicate at least one of: quasi-co-location (QCL) state, transmission configuration indicator (TCI) state, spatial relation (or spatial relation information) , reference signal (RS) , spatial filter or precoding. In  some embodiments, the term “beam” can be used to indicate “beam state. ” Specifically, the term “Tx beam” can be used to indicate at least one of: QCL state, TCI state, spatial relation state, DL reference signal, UL reference signal, Tx spatial filter, or Tx precoding. In addition, the term “Rx beam” can be used to indicate at least one of: QCL state, TCI state, spatial relation state, spatial filter, Rx spatial filter, or Rx precoding. Furthermore, the term “beam ID” can be used to indicate at least one of: QCL state index, TCI state index, spatial relation state index, reference signal index, spatial filter index, or precoding index.

[0023] In some implementations, the spatial filter can be either UE-side or gNB-side spatial filter, and the spatial filter may be referred to as “spatial-domain filter. ”

[0024] In some implementations, the spatial relation or spatial relation information may include one or more reference RSs, which is used to represent the same or quasi-co “spatial relation” between targeted “RS or channel” and the one or more reference RSs.

[0025] In some implementations, the “spatial relation” may also be used to indicate at least one of: the beam, spatial parameter, or spatial domain filter.

[0026] In some implementations, the QCL state may include one or more reference RSs and their corresponding QCL type parameters, where QCL type parameters include at least one of the following aspect or combination: Doppler spread; Doppler shift; delay spread; average delay; average gain; and spatial parameter (or spatial Rx parameter) . In some implementations, the term “TCI state” may be used to indicate “QCL state. ” In some implementations, QCL-TypeA may be indicate Doppler shift, Doppler spread, average delay, and delay spread. In some implementations, QCL-TypeB may indicate Doppler shift and Doppler spread. In some implementations, QCL-TypeC may indicate Doppler shift and average delay. In some implementations, QCL-TypeD may indicate spatial Rx parameter.

[0027] In some embodiments, the term “reference signal (RS) ” can be used to indicate channel state information reference signal (CSI-RS) , synchronization signal block (SSB) (which is also called as SS / PBCH) , demodulation reference signal (DMRS) , sounding reference signal (SRS) , and physical random access channel (PRACH) . Furthermore, the RS at least comprises downlink (DL) reference signal and uplink (UL) reference signaling.

[0028] In some embodiments, a DL RS may include at least one of CSI-RS, SSB, or demodulation reference signal (DMRS) (e.g., DL DMRS) .

[0029] In some embodiments, a UL RS may include at least one of SRS, DMRS (e.g., UL DMRS) , or physical random access channel (PRACH) .

[0030] In some embodiments, the term “UL signal” can be used to indicate PUCCH, PUSCH, or SRS.

[0031] In some embodiments, the term “DL signal” can be used to indicate physical downlink control channel (PDCCH) , physical downlink shared channel (PDSCH) , or CSI-RS.

[0038] Manners / procedures of UE initiated beam reporting

[0039] In some embodiments, UE initiated beam reporting can be performed by at least one of the following manners:

[0040] Manner 1: If the UE meets the event of beam reporting (or a predetermined beam reporting triggering event has occurred) (e.g., the UE detects that the quality of the applied beam goes below a certain threshold) , the UE reports to the NW that the applied beam cannot be used for one or more subsequent communications.

[0041] Manner 2: If the UE meets the event of beam reporting (or a predetermined beam reporting triggering event has occurred) (e.g., the UE detects that the quality of the applied beam goes below a certain threshold) , the UE reports to the NW that the quality of the applied beam.

[0042] Manner 3: If the UE meets the event of beam reporting (or a predetermined beam reporting triggering event has occurred) (e.g., the UE detects that the quality of the applied beam goes below a certain threshold) , the UE reports, to the NW, (1) the quality of the applied beam and (2) the identification of other beam (s) and its quality. Here, other beam (s)  can be derived from the configured or activated beam (s) used for one or more subsequent communications.

[0043] Manner 4: If the UE meets the event of beam reporting (or a predetermined beam reporting triggering event has occurred) (e.g., the UE detects that the quality of the applied beam goes below a certain threshold) , and if the UE searches and finds the candidate beam (s) with a better quality, the UE reports, to the NW, the identification of the candidate beam (s) .

[0044] Manner 5: If the UE meets the event of beam reporting (or a predetermined beam reporting triggering event has occurred) (e.g., the UE detects that the quality of the applied beam goes below a certain threshold) , and if the UE searches and finds the candidate beam (s) with a better quality, the UE reports, to the NW, the identification of candidate beam (s) and its quality.

[0045] Manner 6: If the UE meets the event of beam reporting (or a predetermined beam reporting triggering event has occurred) (e.g., the UE detects that the quality of the applied beam goes below a certain threshold) , and if the UE searches and finds the candidate beam (s) with a better quality, the UE reports, to the NW, (1) the quality of the applied beam, and (2) the identification of candidate beam (s) and its quality.

[0046] In some embodiments, based on the UE capability in terms of the above manners of UE initiated beam reporting, the NW can determine which manner (s) should be performed.

[0047] Trigger event of UE initiated beam reporting

[0048] If at least one of the following events or requirements is met (or a beam reporting triggering event occurs) , the UE can initiate a beam reporting procedure for the NW.

[0049] Event 1: The measured L1-RSRP value of the applied beam is lower than a threshold.

[0050] Event 2: The measured L1-SINR value of the applied beam is lower than a threshold.

[0053] Event 5: The difference in the L1-RSRP measurement value between the applied beam and a candidate beam is below a threshold.

[0054] Event 6: The difference in the L1-RSRQ measurement value between the applied beam and a candidate beam is below a threshold.

[0055] Event 7: The difference in the L1-SINR measurement value between the applied beam and a candidate beam is below a threshold.

[0056] Event 8: The difference in the BLER measurement value between the applied beam and a candidate beam is below a threshold.

[0057] In some implementations, at least one of the trigger events can be configured by the NW, and the corresponding configuration is provided to the UE via radio resource control (RRC) signaling.

[0058] In some implementations, at least one of the trigger events can be indicated by the NW to the UE via MAC-CE or DCI signaling.

[0059] In some implementations, the threshold can be dedicated to different trigger events or different measurement types, and can be configured by the NW and the corresponding configuration can be provided to the UE via RRC signaling.

[0060] In some implementations, if more than one threshold is configured to a trigger event or a measurement type, at least one of the configured thresholds can be indicated via MAC-CE or DCI signaling.
