[0035] The Open Systems Interconnection (OSI) Model (referred to herein as, “open system interconnection model” ) is a conceptual and logical layout that defines network communication used by systems (e.g., wireless communication device, wireless communication node) open to interconnection and communication with other systems. The model is broken into seven subcomponents, or layers, each of which represents a conceptual collection of services provided to the layers above and below it. The OSI Model also defines a logical network and effectively describes computer packet transfer by using different layer protocols. The OSI Model may also be referred to as the seven-layer OSI Model or the seven-layer model. In some embodiments, a first layer may be a physical layer. In some embodiments, a second layer may be a Medium Access Control (MAC) layer. In some embodiments, a third layer may be a Radio Link Control (RLC) layer. In some embodiments, a fourth layer may be a Packet Data Convergence Protocol (PDCP) layer. In some embodiments, a fifth layer may be a Radio Resource Control (RRC) layer. In some embodiments, a sixth layer may be a Non-Access Stratum (NAS) layer or an Internet Protocol (IP) layer, and the seventh layer being the other layer.

[0036] Various example embodiments of the present solution are described below with reference to the accompanying figures to enable a person of ordinary skill in the art to make and use the present solution. As would be apparent to those of ordinary skill in the art, after reading the present disclosure, various changes or modifications to the examples described herein can be made without departing from the scope of the present solution. Thus, the present solution is not limited to the example embodiments and applications described and illustrated herein. Additionally, the specific order or hierarchy of steps in the methods disclosed herein are merely example approaches. Based upon design preferences, the specific order or hierarchy of steps of the disclosed methods or processes can be re-arranged while remaining within the scope of the present solution. Thus, those of ordinary skill in the art will understand that the methods and techniques disclosed herein present various steps or acts in a sample order, and the present solution is not limited to the specific order or hierarchy presented unless expressly stated otherwise.

[0037] 2. Systems and Methods for Performing Mode 2 Sidelink Communication

[0038] Sidelink communication can be described as a unilateral wireless communication service that facilitates communication between communication terminals. Vehicle networking can be referred to as a large-scale system for wireless communication and information exchange among vehicles, pedestrians, roadside equipment, and the internet, in accordance with agreed-upon communication protocols and data exchange standards. The vehicle networking communications can help vehicles gain driving safety, improve traffic efficiency, and acquire convenience or entertainment information. The vehicle networking communication can be categorized into three types as per the objects of wireless communication: communication between vehicles, for example, vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) ; communication between vehicles and roadside equipment / network infrastructures, for example, vehicle-to-infrastructure / vehicle-to-network (V2I / V2N) ; and communication between vehicles and pedestrians, for example, vehicle-to-pedestrian (V2P) . The aforementioned types of communications can collectively be referred to as vehicle-to-everything (V2X) communication.

[0039] In the research of V2X communication, the sidelink-based V2X communication method between user equipment can be regarded as one of the manners / ways to implement the V2X standard, in which traffic data can be directly transmitted from a source user equipment to a destination user equipment via an air interface without being forwarded by the base station and the core network, as shown in FIG. 3. The V2X communication can be referred to as PC5-based V2X communication or V2X sidelink communication.

[0040] With the technological advancement and development of the automation industry, the scenarios for V2X communications can be further diversified and can benefit from higher performance. For example, the advanced V2X services can include vehicle platooning, extended sensors, advanced driving (semi-automated driving and full-automated driving) , and remote driving. In certain implementations, the desired performance characteristics can include supporting data packets with sizes ranging from 50 to 12000 bytes, transmission rates of 2 to 50 messages per second, a maximum end-to-end delay of 3 to 500 milliseconds, reliability of 90%to 99.999%, data rates of 0.5 to 1000 Mbps, and a transmission range of 50 to 1000 meters.

[0041] In certain implementations, sidelink communication can make it possible to directly send user data between devices (via the NR-PC5 interface) instead of routing through the base station (gNB) , which would otherwise involve passing through the NR-Uu interface twice, as shown in FIG. 3. In certain implementations,  sidelink communication can be used in the industrial internet of things (IoT) when devices are in proximity to one another. In such configurations / cases / implementations, the UEs, such as mobile robots in the cooperative carrying use case, can maintain a line of sight with little or no relative motion. For user data transmission between devices, the single wireless hops of sidelink communication (NR-PC5) can deliver benefits in the form of reduced latency because there is only one wireless hop instead of two via the network.

[0042] In certain implementations, for example, with cooperative carrying mobile robots, multiple devices can move as a group with limited or no relative mobility among them. In such implementations / configurations, several results / outcomes can be expected. For example, when using sidelink communication, the quality of communication between devices can be similar. In some implementations, where the devices maintain equal distances from one another as the group of UEs moves across the factory floor, radio conditions and interference can vary. In certain implementations, direct data communication can occur without handovers.

[0043] In certain implementations, depending on the actual location of the devices and the corresponding infrastructure elements, better-quality wireless links can be available for sidelink communication. The configuration can be possible in implementations / cases where sidelink communication occurs between devices in close proximity to one another, as compared to communicating via the network with distant gNBs. In certain implementations, sidelink communication can increase reliability by providing an additional transmission path. For example, there can be a device-to-network connection (NR-Uu) and / or a sidelink connection (NR-PC5) . The configuration / implementation can increase redundancy, for instance, in the motion control use case, where the failure of one communication path can be compensated for by switching to the other. In some implementations, the functionality may desire a configuration involving dual-modem devices above the radio layers. In certain implementations, sidelink communication may not support time sensitive communications (TSC) and / or time sensitive networking (TSN) , resulting in an inability to support deterministic communication through sidelink.

[0044] In certain implementations, for example, in TSN use cases / configurations, such as in a future factory environment, the UEs may desire to handle a mixture of different types of traffic. In some implementations, the traffic can include multiple periodic streams with different / varying periodicities and critical priority, for example, multiple TSN streams coming from different applications; aperiodic critical priority traffic that can result from various events, such as alarms or safety detectors that are to be informed about the occurrence of an event; and best effort type of traffic, such as eMBB traffic, internet traffic, or any other traffic supporting factory operations.

[0045] In certain implementations, to communicate TSN type traffic, it can be beneficial to maintain deterministic and / or low-latency transmission. In some implementations, where a UE is configured with the UE-selected resource allocation mode (e.g., mode 2) , the UE can select resources based on sensing results. In some implementations, if the candidate resources from the sensing results are not sufficient, achieving / maintaining deterministic and / or low-latency transmission may not be possible. In this regard, several embodiments or implementations can be considered for how a UE can select resources to maintain / achieve deterministic and low-latency transmission for TSN type traffic.

[0046] In certain embodiments / implementations, as shown in connection with FIG. 4, the TSN system / controller can be located behind a gateway device supporting a device-side TSN translator (DS-TT) function and can communicate with field devices located behind a second gateway device supporting a DS-TT function. Sidelink communication between the gateway devices can be used to reduce communication latency over the 5G system.

[0047] In certain implementations, the DS-TT function can be located / situated in a UE. In some implementations, the UE can connect with the TSN controller. The TSN controller can collect TSN stream requirements from end stations. A TSN entity, such as TSN AF, can be responsible for the conversion between TSN traffic characteristics, TSN QoS requirements, and / or the TSN QoS profile. In some implementations, the knowledge of TSC traffic pattern (s) can facilitate the scheduling of QoS flows that have periodic, deterministic traffic characteristics. In certain implementations, the TSN controller or other TSN entity can determine and provide TSC assistance information (TSCAI) to the UE based on TSC flow traffic characteristics. The TSCAI can include the periodicity, burst arrival time, and / or survival time.

[0048] In certain implementations, TSN AF / AF (application function) can provide a survival time, indicating the time period an application can survive without any data burst, for example, in terms of the maximum number of messages (e.g., a message can be equivalent to all packets of a data burst) or in terms of time units. In some implementations, a single data burst can be expected within a single time period, generally referred to as the periodicity. In certain embodiments / implementations, the AS layer of the UE can acquire TSC assistance information from the NAS layer of the UE. In certain embodiments / implementations, the UE can acquire the TSC Assistance Information from the TSC AF or TSC controller. In certain embodiments / implementations, after the UE acquires the TSC Assistance Information, the UE can use the information for resource selection.

[0049] In certain embodiments / implementations, the UE can receive / obtain / acquire configuration information for a resource pool, which can include an indication of whether a TSC flow can use the resource pool. In some implementations, if the UE has selected to create a selected sidelink grant and SL data is available in a logical channel associated with TSC flow, but the UE has not selected a pool of resources allowed for the logical channel, the UE can select a pool of resources among the configured pools of resources that can be used for TSC flow.

[0050] In certain embodiments / implementations, the UE can receive the configuration information for a resource pool, which can include an indication of whether a DRB configured with survivalTimeStateSupport can use the resource pool. In some implementations, if the UE has selected to create a selected sidelink grant and SL data is available in a logical channel associated with a DRB configured with survivalTimeStateSupport, but the UE has not selected a pool of resources allowed for the logical channel, the UE can select a pool of resources among the configured pools of resources that can be used for the DRB configured with survivalTimeStateSupport. In certain embodiments / implementations, if the UE has not selected a pool of resources allowed for TSN traffic and the SL data is available in the logical channel for TSN traffic, the UE can select the pool of resources allowed for TSN traffic.

[0051] In certain embodiments / implementations, where a UE is configured with resource allocation mode 2, after a pool of resources is selected, the UE can further select one or more resources in detail.

[0052] In certain embodiments / implementations, the higher layer of the UE can indicate SL TSC-related information to the physical layer SL TSC when any of the following conditions are satisfied: 1) the SL data is available in the logical channel for TSC flow; 2) the UE acquires the TSC Assistance Information or the TSC Assistance Information is updated; 3) resource (re-) selection is triggered and SL TSC-related data is available.

[0053] In certain implementations, the higher layer of the UE can request the physical layer of the UE to determine a subset of resources for TSC traffic transmission. In some implementations, to trigger / initiate the procedure in slot n, the higher layer can provide any of the following parameters for the PSSCH / PSCCH transmission:

[0054] 1) TSC indication, which indicates the use of the candidate resource for TSC flow;

[0055] 2) a set of time resources (r0, r1, r2, …) provided by the higher layer if the higher layer requests the UE to determine a subset of resources for TSC traffic. The PHY can further provide a frequency indication for the set of time resources (r0, r1, r2, …) ;

[0056] 3) a time window list provided by the higher layer if the higher layer requests the UE to determine a subset of resources for TSC traffic. The PHY can further provide frequency or time indication (s) within the time window.

[0057] The UE can perform sensing based on the aforementioned parameters. For example, the UE can select the resource from the set of time resources (r0, r1, r2, …) or time window, and can indicate the selected resource (s) to the higher layer.

[0058] In certain embodiments / implementations, if there are no available resources in the set of time resources (r0, r1, r2, …) or in the time window provided by the higher layer, the physical layer can indicate that no resources are available to the higher layer. In some implementations, the physical layer can provide resource (s) with lower priority to the high layer. The resources with lower priority can be outside the range of the time window or the set of time resources (r0, r1, r2, …) . In some implementations, the resource (s) with lower priority can have an RSRP value that is lower than the configured RSRP threshold.

[0059] In certain embodiments / implementations, if the high layer (such as MAC layer) acquires the indication of no resource from the PHY layer, the higher layer may reselect other / another resource pool, or the higher layer can trigger resource pool reselection. In certain embodiments / implementations, if the selected sidelink grant (s) are not in the range of the time window or the set of time resources (r0, r1, r2, …) , the UE can trigger resource reselection.

[0060] In certain embodiments / implementations, the MAC layer of the UE may not indicate SL TSC assistance information to the physical layer. The MAC layer of the UE can decide / determine a set of candidate resources or a time window according to the TSC Assistance Information and can select the resource within the intersection of the resources indicated by the physical layer and the candidate time.

[0061] In certain embodiments / implementations, if there is no resource within the intersection of the resource (s) indicated by the physical layer and the candidate time, the MAC can reselect another resource pool or trigger resource pool reselection. In some implementations, when a UE is configured with resource allocation mode 2 and / or after a pool of resources is selected, the UE can further select one or more resource (s) when SL data is available in the logical channel for TSC flow.

[0062] In certain embodiments / implementations, if the transmission based on random selection is configured by the upper layers, the MAC layer of the UE can randomly select the time and frequency resources within the range of the time window or the set of time resources (r0, r1, r2, …) . In certain embodiments / implementations, when the high layer (such as MAC layer) acquires the resource (s) from the physical layer, the high layer can randomly select the time and frequency resources that occur within the range of the time window or the set of time resources (r0, r1, r2, …) .

[0063] In certain embodiments / implementations, when the first UE acquires a sidelink grant, the first UE can perform a sidelink logical channel prioritization procedure to obtain the MAC PDU to transmit. During the sidelink logical channel prioritization procedure, the UE can determine which destination ID (identifier) is to be selected. The first UE can further determine which logical channels can be selected for the selected destination ID.

[0064] In some implementations, if the sidelink grant corresponds to a TSC type service, for example, the sidelink grant is selected for TSC type service by the UE, or the sidelink grant is allocated by the network via a DCI (downlink control indication) indicating TSC type, during the sidelink logical channel prioritization procedure, the UE can select Destination-x in cases where the destination-x has the logical channel associated with SL TSC data available for transmission, or the UE can select Destination-x in cases where the destination-x has the logical channel associated with a DRB configured with survivalTimeStateSupport and SL data available for transmission. In certain implementations, the UE can select the logical channels satisfying all the following conditions among the logical channels belonging to the selected destination: SL data is available for transmission; the logical channel associated with a DRB configured with survivalTimeStateSupport or the logical channel associated with SL TSC data.

[0065] In certain embodiments / implementations, if there are no destinations having the logical channel associated with SL TSC data available for transmission or if there are no destinations having the logical channel associated with a DRB configured with survivalTimeStateSupport with SL data available for transmission, the UE can select other / another destination.

[0066] In certain embodiments / implementations, when the UE has TSC type traffic and / or no TSC type traffic, the UE may have to ensure the latency and reliability requirements for the TSC type traffic. In some implementations, there may not be enough resources to ensure the latency and reliability requirements for all types of traffic. In this regard, if the UE is configured with or supports PDCP duplication, the UE may not active / activate PDCP duplication for all radio bearers (RB) .

[0067] In certain embodiments / implementations, the UE can active / activate the PDCP duplication for the sidelink DRB associated with TSC type traffic. In certain embodiments / implementations, if the channel busy  rate (CBR) of the current resource pool or carrier is larger / greater than the configured threshold C1, the UE can active / activate PDCP duplication for the corresponding RB. In some implementations, the threshold C1 can be received from the network or can be preconfigured.

[0068] In certain embodiments / implementations, after the UE sends / transmits / provides a TSC type traffic, if the UE receives a NACK for the feedback for the corresponding / associated transport block (TB) , including the sidelink DRB associated with the TSC type traffic, the UE can active / activate PDCP duplication for the corresponding RB. In certain embodiments / implementations, the UE can acquire the value N from the network or can be preconfigured. In some implementations, after the UE sends a TSC type traffic, if the UE receives N times NACK for the feedback for the corresponding / associated TB, including the sidelink DRB associated with the TSC type traffic, the UE can active / activate PDCP duplication for the corresponding RB.

[0069] Referring now to FIG. 5, which illustrates a flow diagram of a method 500 for performing mode 2 sidelink communication. The method 500 may be implemented using any of the components and devices detailed herein in conjunction with FIGS. 1–4. In an overview, the method 500 may include a wireless communication device selecting resources for time sensitive related communication based on various configurations (STEP 502) .

[0070] In certain configurations, a wireless communication device (e.g., user equipment) can select resources for time sensitive related communication based on various configurations (STEP 502) . In certain configurations, the configurations can indicate whether the wireless communication device can use a resource pool for a time sensitive related data. In certain configurations, the configurations can indicate whether the wireless communication device can use a resource pool for a DRB configured with survivalTimeStateSupport.

[0071] In certain configurations, a higher layer of the wireless communication device can be configured to indicate SL TSC related information to a physical layer of the wireless communication device when any of the following conditions are met / satisfied: SL data is available in a logical channel for a TSC related data flow; the wireless communication device acquires TSC Assistance Information or the TSC Assistance Information is updated; and / or resource (re-) selection is triggered and SL TSC related data is available. In certain configurations, a higher layer of the wireless communication device can indicate to a physical layer of the wireless communication device at least one of the following: a TSC indication; a set of time resources; or a time window list.

[0072] In certain configurations, if there is a resource available in the set of time resources or the time window list, the physical layer of the wireless communication device can indicate the available resource to the higher layer of the wireless communication device. In certain configurations, if no resource is available in the set of time resources, the physical layer of the wireless communication device can indicate no resource to the higher layer of the wireless communication device. In certain configurations, if no resource is available in the set of time resources, the physical layer of the wireless communication device can be configured to provide resource (s) with a lower priority to the higher layer of the wireless communication device.

[0073] In certain configurations, the resource with the lower priority can be out of a range of a time window or the set of time resources. In certain configurations, the resource with the lower priority can have a lower  RSRP value than a configured RSRP threshold. In certain configurations, if the higher layer of the wireless communication device acquires an indication of no resource from the physical layer of the wireless communication device, the wireless communication device can perform at least one of the following: reselect other resource pool, trigger resource pool reselection, or trigger resource reselection.

[0074] In certain configurations, if one or more selected sidelink grants are out of a range of a time window or the set of time resources, the wireless communication device can be configured to trigger resource reselection. In certain configurations, a higher layer of the wireless communication device can decide a set of candidate resources or candidate time according to TSC Assistance Information, and can select a resource within intersection of a resource indicated by a physical layer of the wireless communication device and the candidate resource or time. In certain configurations, if the time sensitive related communication based on random selection is configured by a higher layer of the wireless communication device, the higher layer of the wireless communication device can randomly select time and frequency resources within a range of a time window or a set of time resources.

[0075] In certain configurations, when a higher layer of the wireless communication device acquires one or more resources from a physical layer of the wireless communication device, the higher layer of the wireless communication device can randomly select time and frequency resources that occur within a range of a time window or a set of time resources. In certain configurations, if a sidelink grant, acquired by the wireless communication device, corresponds to a TSC type service, the wireless communication device can be configured to:select a destination having one or more first logical channels associated with SL TSC data available for transmission; or select a destination having one or more second logical channels associated with a DRB configured with survivalTimeStateSupport with SL data available for transmission.

[0076] In certain configurations, the wireless communication device can be configured to select a logical channel from the one or more first logical channels or from the one or more second logical channels. In certain configurations, the wireless communication device can activate PDCP duplication for a sidelink radio bearer associated with the time sensitive related data. In certain configurations, if a channel busy rate of a current resource pool or carrier is larger / greater than a configured threshold C1, the wireless communication device can activate PDCP duplication for a radio bearer, in which the threshold C1 is received from a network or pre-configured. In certain configurations, if the wireless communication device receives / obtains / acquires one or more NACK for a transport block including a sidelink radio bearer associated with the time sensitive related data, the wireless communication device can activate PDCP duplication for the sidelink radio bearer.

[0077] While various embodiments / implementations of the present solution have been described above, it should be understood that they have been presented by way of example only, and not by way of limitation. Likewise, the various diagrams may depict an example architecture or configuration, which are provided to enable persons of ordinary skill in the art to understand example features and functions of the present solution. Such persons would understand, however, that the solution is not restricted to the illustrated example architectures or configurations but can be implemented using a variety of alternative architectures and configurations. Additionally, as would be understood by persons of ordinary skill in the art, one or multiple features of one embodiment / implementation can be combined with one or multiple features of another  embodiment / implementation described herein. Thus, the breadth and scope of the present disclosure should not be limited by any of the above-described illustrative embodiments.

[0078] It is also understood that any reference to an element herein using a designation such as “first, ” “second, ” and so forth does not generally limit the quantity or order of those elements. Rather, these designations can be used herein as a convenient means of distinguishing between two or more elements or instances of an element. Thus, a reference to first and second elements does not mean that only two elements can be employed, or that the first element must precede the second element in some manner.

[0079] Additionally, a person having ordinary skill in the art would understand that information and signals can be represented using any of a variety of different technologies and techniques. For example, data, instructions, commands, information, signals, bits, and symbols, which may be referenced in the above description, can be represented by voltages, currents, electromagnetic waves, magnetic fields or particles, optical fields or particles, or any combination thereof.

[0080] A person of ordinary skill in the art would further appreciate that any of the various illustrative logical blocks, modules, processors, means, circuits, methods and functions described in connection with the aspects disclosed herein can be implemented by electronic hardware (e.g., a digital implementation, an analog implementation, or a combination of the two) , firmware, various forms of program or design code incorporating instructions (which can be referred to herein, for convenience, as “software” or a “software module) , or any combination of these techniques. To clearly illustrate this interchangeability of hardware, firmware and software, various illustrative components, blocks, modules, circuits, and steps have been described above generally in terms of their functionality. Whether such functionality is implemented as hardware, firmware or software, or a combination of these techniques, depends upon the particular application and design constraints imposed on the overall system. Skilled artisans can implement the described functionality in various ways for each particular application, but such implementation decisions do not cause a departure from the scope of the present disclosure.

[0081] Furthermore, a person of ordinary skill in the art would understand that various illustrative logical blocks, modules, devices, components, and circuits described herein can be implemented within or performed by an integrated circuit (IC) that can include a general purpose processor, a digital signal processor (DSP) , an application specific integrated circuit (ASIC) , a field programmable gate array (FPGA) or other programmable logic device, or any combination thereof. The logical blocks, modules, and circuits can further include antennas and / or transceivers to communicate with various components within the network or within the device. A general purpose processor can be a microprocessor, but in the alternative, the processor can be any conventional processor, controller, or state machine. A processor can also be implemented as a combination of computing devices, e.g., a combination of a DSP and a microprocessor, a plurality of microprocessors, one or multiple microprocessors in conjunction with a DSP core, or any other suitable configuration to perform the functions described herein.

[0082] If implemented in software, the functions can be stored as one or multiple instructions or code on a computer-readable medium. Thus, the steps of a method or algorithm disclosed herein can be implemented as software stored on a computer-readable medium. Computer-readable media includes both computer storage media and communication media including any medium that can be enabled to transfer a computer program or  code from one place to another. A storage media can be any available media that can be accessed by a computer. By way of example, and not limitation, such computer-readable media can include RAM, ROM, EEPROM, CD-ROM or other optical disk storage, magnetic disk storage or other magnetic storage devices, or any other medium that can be used to store desired program code in the form of instructions or data structures and that can be accessed by a computer.

[0083] In this document, the term “module” as used herein, refers to software, firmware, hardware, and any combination of these elements for performing the associated functions described herein. Additionally, for purpose of discussion, the various modules are described as discrete modules; however, as would be apparent to one of ordinary skill in the art, two or more modules may be combined to form a single module that performs the associated functions according to embodiments of the present solution.

[0084] Additionally, memory or other storage, as well as communication components, may be employed in embodiments of the present solution. It will be appreciated that, for clarity purposes, the above description has described embodiments of the present solution with reference to different functional units and processors. However, it will be apparent that any suitable distribution of functionality between different functional units, processing logic elements or domains may be used without detracting from the present solution. For example, functionality illustrated to be performed by separate processing logic elements, or controllers, may be performed by the same processing logic element, or controller. Hence, references to specific functional units are only references to a suitable means for providing the described functionality, rather than indicative of a strict logical or physical structure or organization.

[0085] Various modifications to the embodiments described in this disclosure will be readily apparent to those skilled in the art, and the general principles defined herein can be applied to other embodiments without departing from the scope of this disclosure. Thus, the disclosure is not intended to be limited to the embodiments shown herein but is to be accorded the widest scope consistent with the novel features and principles disclosed herein, as recited in the claims below.
