Description

QUARTER TURN LOCKING CLIP

[0001] BACKGROUND OF THE DISCLOSURE

[0002] Heavier vehicles that carry loads, such as trucks, generally have a tow hitch attached to the back part of the vehicle chassis. The tow hitch allows for towing by enabling a connection to a trailer or other similar load. Hitches can take various forms, such as a tow ball with swivel, a tow pin, a tow hook, bumper / fixed-drawbar types, etc. However, even though certain vehicles are designed to transport heavy loads, they are not always being used for such a purpose. Therefore, many trucks utilize a hitch cover that protects the hitch from the elements and can prevent damage and rusting. Exposure to the elements, over time, can weaken and affect the structural integrity of the hitch, which can be a significant safety concern. In addition, hitch covers can enhance the appearance of the read end of a truck and it is not uncommon for drivers to personalize their hitch cover.

[0021] The drawings are not necessarily to scale, or inclusive of all elements of a system, emphasis instead generally being placed upon illustrating the concepts, structures, and techniques sought to be protected herein.DESCRIPTION

[0022] The following detailed description is merely exemplary in nature and is not intended to limit the claimed invention or the applications of its use.

[0023] Conventional hitch covers do not currently use any sort of locking feature to facilitate and secure a connection between the cover and the vehicle (i.e., rear fascia or bumper) . This can frequently cause problems for people when they wish to service the vehicle. In particular, ascrewdriver or some other tool is generally used to loosen and pry the hitch cover off the vehicle. The user will then have to pull it off the fascia or bumper. This task is difficult and can frequently damage the finish of the vehicle. It is therefore desirable for hitch covers to include functionality that can make them more secure and easily removable.

[0024] Embodiments of the present disclosure are directed to a quarter turn locking clip. In some embodiments, the quarter turn locking clip can be used as a component of a hitch cover to facilitate a more secure and easily removable connection to a rear bumper, fascia, or other surface of a vehicle body. The disclosed quarter turn locking clip can be inserted through overlapping slots of a hitch cover and a vehicle fascia and turned 90 degrees to lock the cover to the fascia. The quarter turn locking clip can be easily tightened and loosened via a screwdriver.

[0025] FIGS. 1A-1E show an example quarter turn locking clip 100 according to some embodiments of the present disclosure. The locking clip 100 can include a screwdriver slot 101, an umbrella 102, a plurality of detents 103 (referred to herein collectively as “detents 103” or individually as a “detent 103” ) , a latch block 104, and a snap fit 105. In some embodiments, the screwdriver slot 101 can be configured to receive various types of screwdriver heads, such as a flathead, a Phillips head, a hex key, and others known in the art. In some embodiments, the umbrella 102 can be an anti-vibration umbrella. The detents 103 can be configured to hold the locking clip 100 in a locked position when combined with a locking configuration on a vehicle trim (see FIGS. 2A-2F) . In addition, the snap fit 105 can include a small bump (not shown) that can be held by a cutout of a trim to prevent the locking clip from coming off the hole (see FIGS. 5A-5B) .

[0026] FIGS. 2A-2F show an example quarter turn locking clip 100 connecting a hitch cover 200 and a trim 201 according to some embodiments of the present disclosure. FIG. 2A shows the locking clip 100 being aligned for insertion into the slot 210 of the hitch cover 200. For example, the hitch cover 200 can be used to cover a hitch on a vehicle, such as a truck, where the hitch is  used to carry and transport heavy loads, such as a trailer. In addition, although it is not visible in FIG. 2A, the trim 201 also has a slot in which the locking clip 100 can pass through to interact with a locking configuration on the opposite surface (not shown, see FIGS. 2C-2F) . It is important to note that FIGS. 2A-2F merely constitute an example embodiment, and that the trim 201 could also be a fascia or other type of panel on a vehicle and that the hitch cover 200 could be other types of surfaces that may need to be connected to a vehicle. In FIG. 2B, after the locking clip 100 has been inserted into the slot 210 of the hitch cover 200 and the slot of the trim 201 (not shown) , a screwdriver 300 can be used to tighten the locking clip 100 by inserting into the screwdriver slot 101 and rotating.

[0027] FIG. 2C shows the backside of the locking system. In particular, FIG. 2C shows the underside of the locking clip 100 that sticks out all the way through so that it can be rotated. Moreover, on its backside, the trim 201 can include a locking configuration 202. The locking configuration enables the locking clip 100 to rotate (i.e., via the screwdriver 300) until it is locked in place. FIG. 2D shows a zoomed-in view of the locking configuration 202 of the trim 201 as the locking clip 100 begins to rotate. In some embodiments, the locking configuration 202 can include an outer perimeter wall or surrounding wall 203. In addition, the locking configuration 202 can include various blocking walls 204 that are configured to contact the latch blocks 104 of the locking clip 100 to prevent over-rotation. In some embodiments, the locking configuration 202 can include ditches 205, each being configured to receive a detent 103 of the locking clip 100 to lock the clip 100 in place. In addition, the locking configuration 202 can include a ramp 206 associated with each ditch 205. As shown in FIG. 2E, as the locking clip 100 is rotated, the ramps 206 cause the detent 103 of the locking clip (and the latch blocks 104) to raise until they are above the ditches 205. Once the locking clip 100 has been rotated a full 90 degrees, as shown in FIG. 2F, the blocking walls 204 block the latch blocks 104 at locations 401. Moreover, once the locking clip 100 is sufficiently rotated to the point where the detents 103 reach the ditches 205, the elasticity of the latch blocks 104 causes a snap-back mechanism, and the detents 103 now reside within the ditches 205. The ditches 205 have a width small enough to receive the detents 103 but do not allow rotational movement for the rest of the locking clip 100.

[0028] FIGS. 3A-3B illustrate a ramp mechanism 206 according to some embodiments of the present disclosure. As can be seen, as the locking clip 100 is rotated, the ramp 206 causes the  detent 103 (and the latch block 104 as a whole) to raise upwards. The locking clip 100 is rotated until it reaches the ditch 205 and, because the ramp is no longer forcing the detent 103 upwards, the detent 103 (via the elasticity of the latch block 104) snaps down into the ditch 205, which prevents additional rotation and locks the locking clip 100.

[0029] FIGS. 4A-4B illustrate a ditch mechanism 205 according to some embodiments of the present disclosure. FIG. 4A shows a top view of the ditch mechanism 205 and FIG. 4B shows a side view of the ditch mechanism 205. As can be seen in the figures, the detent 103 rests within the ditch 205. The sides of the ditch 205 prevent the detent 103 from moving left or right, and this in turn prevents the locking clip 100 from rotating, locking the system in place.

[0030] FIG. 5A shows a cutout 210 according to some embodiments of the present disclosure. FIG. 5B shows a bump mechanism according to some embodiments of the present disclosure. As discussed above in relation to FIGS. 2A-2F, the cutout 210 can be part of the hitch cover 200. In some embodiments, the cutout 210 can include a notch 211 that is configured to receive the bump of the snap fit 105 of the locking clip 100. This constitutes an additional mechanism to prevent the locking clip 100 from rotating after it is in the locked position.

[0031] FIGS. 6A-6B illustrate example applications of a quarter turn locking clip according to some embodiments of the present disclosure. For example, in FIG. 6A, the locking clip 100 is used to connect a trailer hitch cover 600 (which can be the same as or similar to the hitch cover 200) and a rear fascia 700 (which can be the same as or similar to the trim 201) . Here, the locking clip 100 is inserted into a locking configuration (e.g., the locking configuration 202) of the rear fascia 700 but is in an unlocked state. Once the locking clip 100 has been rotated 90 degrees, it enters the locked position, as shown in FIG. 6B.

[0032] FIGS. 7A-7B illustrate another example application of a quarter turn locking clip according to some embodiments of the present disclosure. For example, in FIG. 7A, an assembly 700 includes two locking clips 100 that are used to connect a trailer hitch cover 200 and a rear fascia 201. Here, the locking clips 100 are inserted into a locking configuration (e.g., the locking configuration 202 of FIG. 2, which can be seen on the backside of the assembly 700 in FIG. 7B) of the rear fascia 201. The locking clips 100 have been rotated into the locked position so that the hitch cover 200 remains connected and secured to the fascia 201 but can be removed in the manner described herein.

[0033] Such a locking mechanism therefore provides security but also ease in removability for a user, which can improve their experience and avoid damage to the external surfaces and finish of the vehicle.

[0034] While various embodiments have been described above, it should be understood that they have been presented by way of example and not limitation. It will be apparent to persons skilled in the relevant art (s) that various changes in form and detail may be made therein without departing from the spirit and scope. In fact, after reading the above description, it will be apparent to one skilled in the relevant art (s) how to implement alternative embodiments. For example, other steps may be provided, or steps may be eliminated, from the described flows, and other components may be added to, or removed from, the described systems. Accordingly, other implementations are within the scope of the following claims.

[0035] In addition, it should be understood that any figures which highlight the functionality and advantages are presented for example purposes only. The disclosed methodology and system are each sufficiently flexible and configurable such that they may be utilized in ways other than that shown.

[0036] Although the term “at least one” may often be used in the specification, claims and drawings, the terms “a” , “an” , “the” , “said” , etc. also signify “at least one” or “the at least one” in the specification, claims and drawings.
