Abstract

Methods and systems of additional condition signaling for assisting artificial intelligence (AI) / machine learning (ML) model training and inference are discussed herein. For example, the user equipment (UE) sends to the network a capability report indicating AI / ML features and receives from the network compatible AI / ML models. The UE also receives information about network-side additional conditions that are used to select and / or design an AI / ML model for training. In some cases, the UE also receives assistance information identifying AI / ML model features used to help select and / or design the AI / ML model for training. The UE may indicate the selected and / or designed AI / ML model to the network. Additionally, the UE may perform inference using the AI / ML model selected based on the received additional conditions. In some cases, the additional conditions are received in an encrypted format.

Description

PROCEDURES AND SIGNALING DESIGNS FOR ADDITIONAL CONDITION NOTIFICATION FROM NETWORK TO UETECHNICAL FIELD

[0001] This application relates generally to wireless communication systems, including wireless communication systems implementing artificial intelligence (AI)  / machine learning (ML) models.BACKGROUND

[0002] Wireless mobile communication technology uses various standards and protocols to transmit data between a base station and a wireless communication device. Wireless communication system standards and protocols can include, for example, 3rd Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) Long Term Evolution (LTE) (e.g., 4G) , 3GPP New Radio (NR) (e.g., 5G) , and Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) 802.11 standard for Wireless Local Area Networks (WLAN) (commonly known to industry groups as ) .

[0003] As contemplated by the 3GPP, different wireless communication systems' standards and protocols can use various radio access networks (RANs) for communicating between a base station of the RAN (which may also sometimes be referred to generally as a RAN node, a network node, or simply a node) and a wireless communication device known as a user equipment (UE) . 3GPP RANs can include, for example, Global System for Mobile communications (GSM) , Enhanced Data Rates for GSM Evolution (EDGE) RAN (GERAN) , Universal Terrestrial Radio Access Network (UTRAN) , Evolved Universal Terrestrial Radio Access Network (E-UTRAN) , and / or Next-Generation Radio Access Network (NG-RAN) .

[0004] Each RAN may use one or more radio access technologies (RATs) to perform communication between the base station and the UE. For example, the GERAN implements GSM and / or EDGE RAT, the UTRAN implements Universal Mobile Telecommunication System (UMTS) RAT or other 3GPP RAT, the E-UTRAN implements LTE RAT (sometimes simply referred to as LTE) , and NG-RAN implements NR RAT (sometimes referred to herein as 5G RAT, 5G NR RAT, or simply NR) . In certain deployments, the E-UTRAN may also implement NR RAT. In certain deployments, NG-RAN may also implement LTE RAT.

[0005] A base station used by a RAN may correspond to that RAN. One example of an E-UTRAN base station is an Evolved Universal Terrestrial Radio Access Network (E-UTRAN) Node B (also commonly denoted as evolved Node B, enhanced Node B, eNodeB,  or eNB) . One example of an NG-RAN base station is a next generation Node B (also sometimes referred to as a g Node B or gNB) .

[0006] A RAN provides its communication services with external entities through its connection to a core network (CN) . For example, E-UTRAN may utilize an Evolved Packet Core (EPC) while NG-RAN may utilize a 5G Core Network (5GC) .

[0021] FIG. 13 illustrates a system for performing signaling between a wireless device and a network device, according to embodiments disclosed herein.DETAILED DESCRIPTION

[0022] Various embodiments are described with regard to a UE. However, reference to a UE is merely provided for illustrative purposes. The example embodiments may be utilized  with any electronic component that may establish a connection to a network and is configured with the hardware, software, and / or firmware to exchange information and data with the network. Therefore, the UE as described herein is used to represent any appropriate electronic component.

[0023] In various wireless communication systems, it may be that, for an AI / ML-enabled feature / functional group (FG) , “additional condition (s) ” refer to any aspects that are assumed for the training of an AI / ML model but that are not a part of UE capability for the AI / ML-enabled feature / FG. Note that under such circumstances, additional condition (s) are not necessarily specified expressly and can be divided into two categories: network-side additional condition (s) and UE-side additional condition (s) .

[0024] Various mechanisms for the support of transmissions of additional condition (s) from the network to the UE (and any corresponding signaling) may be considered. In some cases, AI / ML algorithms may be applicable to various scenarios, locations, configurations, and / or deployments as the AI / ML algorithm may be updated (e.g., updated by model changes) to reflect the various scenarios, locations, and / or deployments. It may be assumed that for UE-sided AI / ML models, the UE may inform the RAN about applicability conditions of the AI / ML algorithm (s) available to the UE, to support RAN control (e.g. activation, deactivation, and / or switching) . UE reporting of AI / ML model applicability may also be further considered.

[0025] In some cases, UE assistance information (UAI) can be used to report additional condition (s) .

[0026] Additionally, reactive and proactive approaches for additional condition reporting may be considered (e.g., the UE reacts to the network's configuration, or the UE proactively informs the network of updates and / or changes to its supported models and / or functionalities) .

[0027] In various wireless communication systems, AI / ML functionality identification and / or functionality-based life cycle management (LCM) of UE-sided models and / or UE-part of two-sided models may be used. Functionality refers to an AI / ML-enabled feature / FG enabled by configuration (s) , where the configuration (s) are supported based on conditions indicated by UE capability. Correspondingly, functionality-based LCM operates based on, at least, one configuration of AI / ML-enabled feature / FG or specific configurations of an AI / ML-enabled feature / FG.

[0028] Various mechanisms for signaling to support functionality-based LCM operations, (e.g., to activate, deactivate, fallback, and / or switch AI / ML functionalities) may be  considered. Similarly, mechanisms for whether and / or how to address additional condition (s) (e.g., scenarios, sites, and datasets) to aid UE-side transparent model operations (without model identification) at the functionality level may also be considered.

[0029] For AI / ML model identification and model-ID-based LCM of UE-side models and / or UE-part of two-sided models, a model-ID-based LCM operates based on identified models, where a model may be associated with specific configurations and / or conditions associated with the UE capability of an AI / ML-enabled feature / FG and additional condition (s) (e.g., scenarios, sites, and datasets) as determined and / or identified between the UE and the network.

[0030] In some wireless communication systems, for UE-side AI / ML model inferencing use, , to ensure consistency between training and inference regarding network-side additional condition (s) (if identified) , various approaches can be taken. In one approach, model identification to achieve alignment on / with a network-side additional condition between the network-side and the UE-side may be used. In a second approach, model training may occur at the network and may be transferred to the UE, where the model has been trained under the additional condition. In a third approach, information on and / or indication (s) of the network-side additional condition (s) may be provided to UE. In a fourth approach, consistency may be assisted by monitoring (e.g., by the UE and / or the network) the performance of UE-side candidate models / functionalities to select a model / functionality. This is not an exhaustive list of approaches, and other approaches (including other approaches for achieving these and / or similar results) are not precluded.

[0031] Embodiments discussed herein provide procedures and signaling designs for additional condition indications. For example, examples of additional condition (s) transmitted from the network to the UE, and / or signaling procedures for the transmission of additional condition (s) from the network to the UE, are discussed herein. Additionally, embodiments herein discuss procedures for UE-sided model training and procedures for generating an inference at the UE. Examples of such procedures may incorporate a functionality based LCM with UE autonomous model switching and / or a model ID based LCM. It should be understood that LCM allows for anticipation of, for example, user mobility or introduced interference that may cause a possible need to switch to a more applicable AI / ML model.

[0032] Additional Condition (s)

[0033] In some embodiments, additional condition (s) may include a combination of parameters and information that is transparent to the UE, but may help the UE to select an  AI / ML model for training and / or inference if they are indicated to the UE. For example, information transparent to the UE may include network implementation information such as dataset information and / or network antenna information. The dataset information may include a dataset category, dataset type, dataset size, the freshness of the dataset etc. The antenna information may include antenna panel information, virtual port mapping, port number (s) , antenna polarization type, down-tilt, and / or beam pattern (e.g., synchronization signal block (SSB)  / channel state information reference signal (CSI-RS) ) . In another example, information transparent to the UE may include network configurations which may not be shared with the UE such as a network bandwidth and / or a network frequency. In a third example, information transparent to the UE may include network status information such as base station, operations administration and management (OAM) , core network (CN) , and / or location management function (LMF) traffic loading and / or resource utilization; base station, OAM, CN, and / or LMF computation loading; and / or base station, OAM, CN, and / or LMF congestion level (s) . It should be noted that a base station, an OAM, a CN, and an LMF may be examples of network entities and may be interchangeable with each other with reference to indicating and utilizing additional condition (s) . Additionally, various combinations of the discussed examples may be considered as additional condition (s) transmitted from the network to the UE.

[0034] It should be understood that, in some embodiments, additional condition (s) can take various formats. In one example, the additional condition (s) may take an open format with explicit contents that are known across various UEs and / or network nodes (e.g., across differing vendors for these UEs and / or network nodes) .

[0035] In a second example, the additional condition (s) may take the format of one or more IDs (e.g., dataset ID (s) , network config ID (s) , network status ID (s) ) . Such ID (s) may be used to keep network information private and / or proprietary (e.g. hide the network and / or base station implementation details) . In some cases, the ID can be a network assigned ID and / or a manufacturer assigned ID. In use, the network provides / allows for a mapping relationship between the ID and corresponding dataset at the UE, but the UE may not ultimately know, at a technical level, what network information and / or configuration is mapped to the ID and / or dataset.

[0036] Further with reference to the second example, the second example relates to definitions for formats for dataset IDs / model IDs that may be used to facilitate data collection and inferencing with respect to different use cases (e.g., different network-side conditions for the corresponding network signaling) . Within such contexts, it may be understood that a same dataset ID / model ID that is used in a radio resource control (RRC)  configuration for a data collection procedure for training an AI / ML model is also used in a corresponding configuration for an inferencing procedure that uses the AI / ML model, in order to ensure compatibility / consistency as between the data collection procedure and the inferencing procedure. When so used, the dataset ID / model ID may thus be understood to indicate or represent, in an abstracted way, the applicable network-side condition for the corresponding network signaling. Within some contexts applicable to the second example disclosed herein, the uses of a "dataset ID” versus “model ID" may be understood as interchangeable. This may correspond to cases where, for example, a single dataset identified by the dataset ID is used to train a corresponding model identified by the model ID.In such a situation, each of the dataset ID and the model ID are logical IDs that correspond to the same scenario (e.g., the same network-side condition) , and thus a straight swap between a use of a dataset ID instead of using the corresponding model ID (or vice-versa) is possible.

[0037] In a third example, the additional condition (s) may take the form of a closed format with standardized fields. In some cases, an encrypted message of information for more sensitive information (e.g., beam width information) may be used via a public key system and vendor ID. The UE can recover the information via the vendor ID and the private key, and additional information associated with the vendor ID. Further, the private key can be shared to the UE offline (e.g., in negotiations between infra vendor A and UE vendor C) . The additional information can be associated with different UE classes (e.g. higher class UEs may get more sensitive information) .

[0038] Embodiments disclosed herein discuss the use of additional condition (s) transmitted from the network to the UE for, for example, UE-sided AI / ML model training and AI / ML model inference.

[0039] UE-Sided Training Procedure

[0040] FIG. 1 illustrates an example of additional condition signaling between a network 106 and a UE 104 for UE-sided AI / ML model training, according to embodiments discussed herein.

[0041] In some embodiments, the additional condition (s) signaled from the network 106 to the UE 104 may be used for UE-sided AI / ML model training. To start, the UE 104 may transmit 108 a UE capability report to the network 106 indicating supported AI / ML features / FGs. The network 106 may then respond with model configuration information that identifies AI / ML models that are compatible with the supported AI / ML features. Based on  the UE capability reporting, the network 106 may configure 110 a list of compatible model (s) for training according to various alternatives.

[0042] In one alternative, the network 106 may configure 110 the UE 104 with a list of compatible model (s) for training transmitted to the UE 104 via, an RRC message. In some cases, while configured model list is a full list of compatible AI / ML model (s) , the UE 104 may train a subset of the compatible AI / ML model (s) of the full list of AI / ML model (s) . This may be because the subset of compatible AI / ML models may be those model (s) that are applicable in the current deployment, because of memory restrictions, and / or because of UE-based or server-based computation resource restrictions. Further, the model ID and meta information (e.g., applicability conditions) may be included in the message. In some examples, such conditions may not be indicated in the message as to avoid proprietary information sharing.

[0043] In a second alternative, the network 106 may configure 110 the UE 104 with assisted information as to have finer control over which AI / ML is selected. Non-limiting examples of assistance information aspects correspond to CSI compression and / or beam management. In some cases, assisted information can be part of an RRC configuration to trigger the data collection procedure. It may be up to UE 104 implementation design separate models for different assistance information, and / or to design a generalized model applicable to multiples sets of different assistance information. In some such examples, model IDs may not be strictly required.

[0044] Subsequently, the UE 104 may optionally report 112 UE-side additional condition (s) to the network 106 that includes information on UE 104 internal and network-transparent information (e.g. memory, speed, location) via, for example, a UE assistance information (UAI) message or an RRC message.

[0045] Then, the network 106 sends 114 network-side additional condition (s) to the UE 104 via, for example, an RRC message (e.g. RRCReconfiguration) . Based on the additional condition (s) signaled from the network 106 and the applicability conditions in the meta information, the UE 104 may determine which model (s) to train. The UE 104 may collect the model's dataset by receiving signaling from the network 106 that is used in training of the model. Accordingly, the UE 104 may perform offline training 116 of the AI / ML model based on collected dataset. Note that in some alternative embodiments, the offline training 116 of the AI / ML model may occur at the server 102 as facilitated by the UE 104.

[0046] After the AI / ML model training is completed, the UE 104 may notify 118 the network 106 via, for example, a UAI message or an uplink (UL) RRC message, which  model (s) are ready, which AI / ML models are available in the UE 104 memory, and / or which AI / ML models are available in a server 102. In some cases, the UE 104 may store some model (s) in the server 102, but not download the model due to memory restrictions. Accordingly, the network 106 may need to know such information (so that it can account for any remote access delays in view of latency parameters that may apply with respect to an inference to be generated by the model) .

[0047] UE-sided AI / ML Model Inference Functionality Based LCM

[0048] FIG. 2 illustrates an example of additional condition signaling between a network 206 and a UE 204 for UE-sided AI / ML inference with functionality based LCM, according to embodiments discussed herein.

[0049] In some embodiments, additional condition (s) signaled from the network 206 to the UE 204 may be used for UE-sided AI / ML inference with functionality based LCM. To start, a network 206 may configure 208 functionalities for inference and / or model switching conditions and transmit the configured functionalities to the UE 204. Note that in some cases, one such functionality may be associated with / map to multiple model (s) , and the UE 204 can autonomously switch between the models according to the model switch conditions. In some examples, the model switch conditions may include, one or more (or a combination) of a performance monitor metric threshold, network-side additional condition (s) , and / or UE-side additional condition (s) .

[0050] Then, a network-side additional condition transmission from the network 206 to the UE 204 may be triggered according to various alternatives. In one alternative, the network 206 may initiate the transmission of the assistance information and / or the additional condition (s) . The UE 204 may choose model (s) that are consistent with the assistance information for training to use to perform inferencing. In some cases, the time to send the assisted information may be up to the network 206 implementation.

[0051] In a second alternative, the UE 204 may initiate 210 the transmission of the assistance information and / or the additional condition (s) when a configured event is fulfilled. Accordingly, the UE 204 may send a UL message to the network to request the network-side additional condition (s) and / or the assistance information. The configured event can be , for example, that a monitored inference error is greater than or equal to a configured threshold. Additionally, the UL message can take the form of a UL RRC message (e.g., a UAI message) , a medium access control-control element (MAC-CE) message, and / or a dedicated scheduling request (SR) . In some cases, if the AI / ML model inference is latency sensitive, the network can configure a dedicated SR resource.

[0052] Subsequently, in response to the triggering event, the network 206 indicates 212 the network-side additional condition (s) to the UE 204 via, for example, an RRC message (e.g. RRCReconfiguration) or a MAC-CE message. Then, based on the active network-side additional condition (s) received from the network 206 and based on the configured conditions for model switching, the UE 204 determines 214 and / or switches to an AI / ML model for inference, and collects the corresponding dataset for the AI / ML model. The UE 204 then performs AI / ML model inference using the AI / ML model. In some cases, if the AI / ML model is stored in server 202 and not in UE 204, the UE 204 downloads the AI / ML model from the server for inference. Optionally, in some instances, the UE 204 may notify 216 the network 206 of the AI / ML model used for inference in, for example, a UAI message.

[0053] UE-sided AI / ML Model Inference Model ID Based LCM

[0054] FIG. 3 illustrates an example of additional condition signaling between a network 306 and a UE 304for UE-sided AI / ML inference with model ID based LCM, according to embodiments discussed herein.

[0055] In some embodiments, additional condition (s) signaled from the network 306 to the UE 304 may be used for UE-sided AI / ML inference with model ID based LCM. To start, a network 306 may configure 308 a list of model (s) for inference. Then, an active network-side additional condition transmission from the network to the UE may be triggered similarly to the transmission triggering for UE-sided AI / ML model inference with functionality based LCM discussed herein. As discussed in embodiments herein (i.e., for functionality based LCM) , in one alternative, the network may request 310 the UE 304 to perform inference. In a second alternative, the UE may request 312 the network-side additional condition (s) for inference.

[0056] Accordingly, in response to the triggering event, the network 306 may send 314 active network-side additional condition (s) to the UE 304 via, for example, an RRC message (e.g., an RRCReconfiguration message) or a MAC-CE.

[0057] Based on the active network-side additional condition (s) received from the network, the UE 304 may down-scope 316 a subset of configured AI / ML models. That is the UE 304 may select a subset of AI / ML model from the set of configured AI / ML models for inference. Then, the UE 304 may notify 318 the network 306 of the subset of selected models via, for example, an UL RRC message, or a UAI message. In response to the notification of the selected subset of models, the network 306 may activate 320 and / or configure a model ID for inference and may send the activated and / or configured model ID  to the UE 304. It should be understood that, in the case where a model ID cannot be activated or configured, the network 306 may indicate to the UE 304 to switch to a different AI / ML model, fallback to previously used AI / ML models or fallback to previous / legacy procedures.

[0058] Based on the received activated and / or configured model ID, the UE 304 may perform 322 AI / ML model inference using the AI / ML model corresponding to the activated and / or configured model ID. It should be understood that the UE 304 may perform 322 AI / ML model interference using an AI / ML model that has been switched to in the case that a model ID cannot be activated or configured.
