Description

METHODS AND APPARATUS FOR DYNAMICALLY GENERATING MULTIPLE CHANNEL STATE INFORMATION REFERENCE SIGNAL RESOURCE INDICATORSBACKGROUND

[0001] Aspects of the present disclosure relate generally to wireless communications, and more particularly, to apparatuses and methods for dynamically generating multiple channel state information reference signal resource indicators.

[0002] Wireless communication networks are widely deployed to provide various types of communication content such as voice, video, packet data, messaging, broadcast, and so on. These systems may be multiple-access systems capable of supporting communication with multiple users by sharing the available system resources (e.g., time, frequency, and power) . Examples of such multiple-access systems include code-division multiple access (CDMA) systems, time-division multiple access (TDMA) systems, frequency-division multiple access (FDMA) systems, orthogonal frequency-division multiple access (OFDMA) systems, and single-carrier frequency division multiple access (SC-FDMA) systems.

[0003] These multiple access technologies have been adopted in various telecommunication standards to provide a common protocol that enables different wireless devices to communicate on a municipal, national, regional, and even global level. For example, a fifth generation (5G) wireless communications technology (which may be referred to as new radio (NR) ) is envisaged to expand and support diverse usage scenarios and applications with respect to current mobile network generations. In an aspect, 5G communications technology may include: enhanced mobile broadband addressing human-centric use cases for access to multimedia content, services and data; ultra-reliable-low latency communications (URLLC) with certain specifications for latency and reliability; and massive machine type communications, which may allow a very large number of connected devices and transmission of a relatively low volume of non-delay-sensitive information. As the demand for mobile broadband access continues to increase, however, further improvements in NR communications technology and beyond may be desired.

[0004] In a wireless communication network, a base station (BS) may attempt to transmit data to multiple user equipment (UE) using the multiple user, multiple input, multiple  output (MU-MIMO) scheme. However, the BS may be unable to select a beam and / or a communication channel for the multicast. Therefore, improvements in beam / channel selection may be important.SUMMARY

[0005] The following presents a simplified summary of one or more aspects in order to provide a basic understanding of such aspects. This summary is not an extensive overview of all contemplated aspects, and is intended to neither identify key or critical elements of all aspects nor delineate the scope of any or all aspects. Its sole purpose is to present some concepts of one or more aspects in a simplified form as a prelude to the more detailed description that is presented later.

[0030] Certain UEs 110 may communicate with each other using device-to-device (D2D) communication link 158. The D2D communication link 158 may use the DL / UL WWAN spectrum. The D2D communication link 158 may use one or more sidelink channels, such as a physical sidelink broadcast channel (PSBCH) , a physical sidelink discovery channel (PSDCH) , a physical sidelink shared channel (PSSCH) , and a physical sidelink control channel (PSCCH) . D2D communication may be through a variety of wireless D2D communications systems, such as for example, FlashLinQ, WiMedia, Bluetooth, ZigBee, Wi-Fi based on the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) 802.11 standard, LTE, or NR.

[0031] The wireless communications system may further include a Wi-Fi access point (AP) 150 in communication with Wi-Fi stations (STAs) 152 via communication links 154 in a 5 GHz unlicensed frequency spectrum. When communicating in an unlicensed frequency spectrum, the STAs 152  / AP 150 may perform a clear channel assessment (CCA) prior to communicating in order to determine whether the channel is available.

[0032] The small cell 105' may operate in a licensed and / or an unlicensed frequency spectrum. When operating in an unlicensed frequency spectrum, the small cell 105' may  employ NR and use the same 5 GHz unlicensed frequency spectrum as used by the Wi-Fi AP 150. The small cell 105', employing NR in an unlicensed frequency spectrum, may boost coverage to and / or increase capacity of the access network.

[0033] A BS 105, whether a small cell 105' or a large cell (e.g., macro base station) , may include an eNB, gNodeB (gNB) , or other type of base station. Some base stations, such as gNB 180 may operate in one or more frequency bands within the electromagnetic spectrum. The electromagnetic spectrum is often subdivided, based on frequency / wavelength, into various classes, bands, channels, etc. In 5G NR two initial operating bands have been identified as frequency range designations FR1 (410 MHz –7.125 GHz) and FR2 (24.25 GHz –52.6 GHz) . The frequencies between FR1 and FR2 are often referred to as mid-band frequencies. Although a portion of FR1 is greater than 6 GHz, FR1 is often referred to (interchangeably) as a “Sub-6 GHz” band in various documents and articles. A similar nomenclature issue sometimes occurs with regard to FR2, which is often referred to (interchangeably) as a “millimeter wave” (mmW) band in documents and articles, despite being different from the extremely high frequency (EHF) band (30 GHz –300 GHz) which is identified by the International Telecommunications Union (ITU) as a “millimeter wave” band.

[0034] With the above aspects in mind, unless specifically stated otherwise, it should be understood that the term “sub-6 GHz” or the like if used herein may broadly represent frequencies that may be less than 6 GHz, may be within FR1, or may include mid-band frequencies. Further, unless specifically stated otherwise, it should be understood that the term “millimeter wave” or the like if used herein may broadly represent frequencies that may include mid-band frequencies, may be within FR2, or may be within the EHF band. Communications using the mmW  / near mmW radio frequency band has extremely high path loss and a short range. The mmW base station 180 may utilize beamforming 182 with the UE 110 to compensate for the path loss and short range.

[0057] Also, for example, one or more filters 396 may be used by RF front end 388 to filter a received signal to obtain an input RF signal. Similarly, in an aspect, for example, a respective filter 396 may be used to filter an output from a respective PA 398 to produce an output signal for transmission. In an aspect, each filter 396 may be coupled with a specific LNA 390 and / or PA 398. In an aspect, RF front end 388 may use one or more switches 392 to select a transmit or receive path using a specified filter 396, LNA 390, and / or PA 398, based on a configuration as specified by transceiver 302 and / or processor 312.

[0058] As such, transceiver 302 may be configured to transmit and receive wireless signals through one or more antennas 365 via RF front end 388. In an aspect, transceiver may be tuned to operate at specified frequencies such that BS 105 may communicate with, for example, the UE 110 or one or more cells associated with one or more BS 105. In an aspect, for example, the modem 320 may configure transceiver 302 to operate at a specified frequency and power level based on the base station configuration of the BS 105 and the communication protocol used by the modem 320.

[0059] In an aspect, the modem 320 may be a multiband-multimode modem, which may process digital data and communicate with transceiver 302 such that the digital data is sent and received using transceiver 302. In an aspect, the modem 320 may be multiband and be configured to support multiple frequency bands for a specific communications protocol. In an aspect, the modem 320 may be multimode and be configured to support multiple operating networks and communications protocols. In an aspect, the modem 320 may control one or more components of the BS 105 (e.g., RF front end 388, transceiver 302) to enable transmission and / or reception of signals from the network based on a specified modem configuration. In an aspect, the modem configuration may be based on the mode of the modem and the frequency band in use. In another aspect, the modem configuration may be based on base station configuration associated with the BS 105.

[0060] An aspect of the present disclosure includes implementing extension of CRI (s) -based CSI reporting (channel quality indicator (CQI) , precoding matrix indicator (PMI) ,  and / or rank indicator (RI) calculated per CRI for ≥1 CRIs) for hybrid beamforming supporting multiple (e.g., up to a total of 128 CSI-RS) ports across all resources, with multiple (e.g., up to 32 CSI-RS) ports per resource.

[0061] In some instances, for a CSI report, a network may configure multiple CSI-RS resources. However, a UE may only report one CRI for a selected CSI-RS resource and associated CSI information such as RI, CQI, PMI, etc. (which is denoted as a CSI-bundle) , derived from measurement of that CSI-RS resource. In some aspects, it may be beneficial to introduce multi-CRI feedback. As such, instead of one index (i.e., CRI) for the “best” (i.e., “top” ) CSI-RS resource, the UE may feedback m indices (CRIs) for the “best -m” CSI-RS resources. For each of the m CRIs, the UE may also feedback the corresponding CSI-bundle (e.g., RI, CQI, PMI) . In one aspect, the UE may provide a CSI report that includes multiple CSI-bundles.

[0062] One purpose for reporting multiple CRIs is to increase multiple-user multiple input multiple output (MU-MIMO) pairing probability under hybrid beamforming (HBF) . For example, UE#1 has two “best” channel measurements under CSI-RS#2 and #4 (i.e. analog beam#2 and #4) , while UE#2 has two “best” channel measurements under CSI-RS#3 and #4 (i.e. analog beam#1 and #2) . If each UE only reports one best CRI (UE#1 reports CSI-RS#2, UE#2 reports CSI-RS#3) , UE#1 and UE#2 may not be paired for MU-MIMO. However, if each UE reports two best CRIs, UE#1 and UE#2 may have chance to be paired under CSI-RS#4 (i.e. analog beam#4) .

[0063] In one aspect, MU-MIMO under HBF may be utilized for middle-bands, e.g., higher FR1 (e.g. 3 –7 gigahertz (GHz) ) or FR3 (7 –24 GHz) . For lower FR1, it may be deployed with a small number of antenna elements (AEs) and / or transceiver units (TXRUs) or ports. One TXRU / port may correspond to one AE, thus no multiple analog beams.

[0064] One aspect of the present disclosure includes identifying a number of m reported CSI bundles. In one example, a BS may have updated information relating to a need for MU-MIMO pairing (e.g., traffic congestion of UEs under this cell –which can be changed dynamically due to different UEs’ traffic) . In another example, a UE may know how many CRIs are worth reporting (e.g. no need to report 3 CRIs if there is one outstanding CRI channel quality and all other CRIs’ channel qualities are much worse than the best one) . In some instances, the UE may adjust the number of CRIs based on the amount of  data to be transferred. Other methods may also be used by the BS and / or the UE to identify the number of CRIs.

[0065] Aspects of the present disclosure include m being radio resource configuration (RRC) configured (semi-statically determined by the BS) .

[0066] Aspects of the present disclosure include the BS dynamically identifying m and indicating the dynamically determined m to the UE. The m may be indicated in the downlink control information (DC) for the triggered aperiodic (AP) report and / or in the medium access control (MAC) control element (MAC CE) . The MAC CE may update the m value configured with a periodic (P) , semi-periodic (SP) , and / or aperiodic report prior to the multi-CRI report.

[0067] Aspects of the present disclosure include the UE dynamically identifying m and indicating the dynamically determined m to the BS in the CSI. In some cases, a differential CQI threshold may be used by the UE to determine the reported m CSI bundles (e.g., differential CQI over the best CRI) . In one aspect, the UE may report m in a first portion of the CSI. In another aspect, the UE may report m prior to other CSI (e.g., another report via uplink control information (UCI) or MAC CE) configured with a linkage to the multi-CRI report of other main contents of the m CSI bundles. For both aspects above, the reported m may be packaged as a dedicated value indication, or via the CRI (e.g., CRI as a K-bit bitmap, where K is the total CSI RSs configured) .

[0068] In some aspects, the CSI may be conveyed on either physical uplink control channel (PUCCH) or physical uplink shared channel (PUSCH) . In one option, a maximum value of m may be configured (denoted as M, and m<=M<=K, where K is the total CSI RSs configured) , and the payload size of the first portion of the CSI is determined by M regardless how large m is reported by the UE (other CSI contents) . If m<M is reported by the UE (e.g., according to the reported CRI) , padding bits (e.g., zero-padding) may be used for the unreported (i.e., M –m) CSI bundles in order to have a fixed payload size for the first portion of the CSI. For the second portion of the CSI, the UE may place the CSI bundles (e.g., CQI, LI, PMI…) into the payload.

[0069] In a different aspect, the payload size of the CSI may change with the value m to accommodate m CSI bundles. The CRI may be reported in the first portion of the CSI, and the remaining contents (RI, wideband CQI, LI, wideband PMI) of the reported CSI bundles may be reported in the second portion of the CSI without using padding bits.

[0070] FIG. 4 illustrates an example of a single part CSI transmitted to base station by the user equipment. In some aspects of the present disclosure, the BS 105 or the UE 110 may identify the number of CRIs as described above. The BS 105 or the UE 110 may utilize various metrics and / or routines to determine the number of CRIs. In one aspect, the BS 105 may determine that the congestion level within the cell associated with the BS 105 has increased above a predetermined threshold. The congestion level may be measured by the BS 105 based on network utilization including data transfer capacity, speed, cost, etc., according to convention methods. In response to the BS 105 determining that the congestion level has increased above the threshold, the BS 105 may increase the number of CRIs to increase the chance of MU-MIMO. The BS 105 may use other criteria to determine the number of CRIs according to aspects of the present disclosure.

[0071] In one aspect, the UE 110 may identify the number of CRIs based on the quality of the CSI RSs. For example, the UE 110 may receive numerous CSI RSs from the BS 105. The UE 110 may identify two beams with the “best” qualities (as determined by conventional methods) , and the remaining beams as having significantly worse qualities. As such, the UE 110 may identify the number of CRIs as two, even if the BS 105 previously signaled a different number.

[0072] In some aspects of the present disclosure, after the number of CRIs is identified by the BS 105 and / or UE 110, the device identifying the number of CRIs may transmit an indicator indicating the number of CRIs to the other device. For example, the BS 105 may transmit an indicator indicating the number of CRIs in the DCI or MAC CE. The UE 110 may report the number of CRIs in the MAC CE and / or UCI.

[0073] In one aspect of the present disclosure, the UE 110 may receive numerous CSI RSs from the BS 105. The reference signals may be used by the UE 110 to assess the quality of various communication channels, beams, antenna configurations, etc., between the BS 105 and the UE 110. In response to the CSI RSs and the number of CRIs previously identified (by the BS 105 or the UE 110) , the UE 110 may transmit CSI 400 to the BS 105 indicating information relating to results of the selected CSI. In one aspect, the CSI 400 may include the CRI and / or the m value. The CSI 400 may include CSI bundles associated with the selected CRIs. The CSI 400 may include RI, wideband CQI, LI, wideband PMI, and / or other parameters associated with the CSI RSs. In the example shown in FIG. 4, the CSI 400 includes the RI, the wideband CQI, the LI, and the wideband  PMI of the first CSI bundle, …and the RI, the wideband CQI, the LI, and the wideband PMI of the mth CSI bundle. The CSI 400 may be transmitted on PUCCH.

[0074] In one aspect of the present disclosure, the CSI 400 may have a fixed size configured to fit M CSI bundles. If m (selected CRI number) equals to M (a configured maximum number of reported CSI bundles) , then no paddings will be inserted by the transmitting device. If m is less than M, then the transmitting device may add padding bits (e.g., value- “0” bits) to the CSI 400. The CSI 400 may have a fixed size size according to aspects of the present disclosure.

[0075] FIG. 5 illustrates an example of a two part CSI transmitted to the base station by the user equipment. In certain aspect of the present disclosure, the CSI in FIG. 5 includes a first part 500 and a part portion 550. The number of CRIs is identified by the BS 105 and / or UE 110 as described above. The device identifying the number of CRIs may transmit an indicator indicating the number of CRIs to the other device. For example, the BS 105 may transmit an indicator indicating the number of CRIs in the DCI or MAC CE. The UE 110 may report the number of CRIs in the MAC CE and / or UCI.

[0076] In one aspect of the present disclosure, the UE 110 may receive numerous CSI RSs from the BS 105. The reference signals may be used by the UE 110 to assess the quality of various communication channels, beams, antenna configurations, etc., between the BS 105 and the UE 110. In response to the CSI RSs and the number of CRIs previously identified (by the BS 105 or the UE 110) , the UE 110 may transmit the first part 500 of the CSI to the BS 105 indicating information relating to results of the selected CRIs. In one aspect, the first part 500 may include the CRI and / or the m value. The first part 500 may include CSI bundles associated with the selected CRIs. The first part 500 may include M resources so the transmitting device may transmit up to M CSI bundles. If m is less than M, the transmitting device may pad the first part 500 with padding bits (e.g., value- “0” bits) .

[0077] In some aspects, the first part 500 may include RI and / or wideband CQI and / or subband CQI, and / or other parameters associated with the CSI RSs. In the example shown in FIG. 5, the first part 500 may include the RI and / or the wideband CQI and / or the subband CQI of the first CSI bundle…and the RI and / or the wideband CQI and / or the subband CQI of the mth CSI bundle. The CQI values in the first part 500 may be associated with a first codeword (CW) . If m is less than M, the transmitting devices may include padding bits as described above.

[0078] In one aspect of the present disclosure, the second part 550 may include wideband CQI and / or subband CQI, LI, PMI, and / or other parameters associated with the CSI RSs. In the example shown, the second part 550 may include the wideband CQI and / or the subband CQI, the LI, and / or the PMI of the first CSI bundle…and the wideband CQI and / or the subband CQI, the LI, and / or the PMI of the mth CSI bundle. The CQI values in the second part 550 may be associated with a second CW.

[0079] In certain aspects, the first part 500 and / or the second part 550 may be fixed size or variable size.

[0080] In some aspects, the reported CSI bundles may be defined within the same CSI report. The priority of the CSI bundles may be determined by the associated CSI RS index (e.g., smaller CSI RS resource index may correspond to higher priority) . In other aspects, the reported CSI bundles may be defined using different CSI report indices (e.g., implicitly according to CSI RS indices) . In another aspect, the omission / priority of the second part of the CSI may be determined based on CQI and / or RI reported for each reported CSI bundle (higher CQI and / or RI has higher priority and would be omitted “later” ) . To enable such alternatives, the order of the m reported CSI bundles may additionally need to be reported (e.g., in the first part of the CSI, besides the CRI) .

[0081] FIG. 6A illustrates an example of a first part of CSI transmitted to the base station by the user equipment. In some aspects, a first part 600 of the CSI may include the CRI and / or the m value. The first part 600 may include the order of the reported CSI bundles (e.g.,  or codepoints to encode the sorting / order information) . The order of the reported CSI bundles may also be jointly reported (encoded) with the multiple CRIs (e.g.  codepoints to encode the selected m CRIs out of the configured K, which also encodes the sorting / order information) . The first part 600 may include the CSI bundles associated with the selected CRIs. The first part 600 may include RI and / or wideband CQI and / or subband CQI, and / or other parameters associated with the CSI RSs. In the example shown in FIG. 6, the first part 600 may include the RI and / or the wideband CQI and / or the subband CQI of the first CSI bundle…and the RI and / or the wideband CQI and / or the subband CQI of the mth CSI bundle.

[0082] FIG. 6B illustrates an example of a CSI (which is not split into a first and a second part) transmitted to the base station by the user equipment. In some aspects, the CSI 650 of the CSI may include the CRI and / or the m value. The CSI 650 may include the order  of the reported CSI bundles (e.g.,  or codepoints to encode the sorting / order information) . The order of the reported CSI bundles may also be jointly reported (encoded) with the multiple CRIs (e.g.  codepoints to encode the selected m CRIs out of the configured K, which also encodes the sorting / order information) . The CSI 650 may include the CSI bundles associated with the selected CRIs. The CSI 650 may include RI and / or wideband CQI and / or LI (layer indicator) and / or wideband PMI, and / or other parameters associated with the CSI RSs. In the example shown in FIG. 6B, the CSI 650 may include the RI and / or the wideband CQI a and / or LI (layer indicator) and / or wideband PMI of the first CSI bundle…and the RI and / or the wideband CQI and / or LI (layer indicator) and / or wideband PMI of the mth CSI bundle.

[0083] FIG. 7 illustrates example priority schemes for a second part of CSI. In certain aspects of the present disclosure, a diagram 700 illustrates a chart 710 of priority reporting levels for the second part of the CSI. The chart 710 shows 2m priority levels for m CSI bundles. A priority direction 712 shows that the priority decreases from high (i.e., priority 0) to low (i.e., priority 2m) . An omission order 714 points in the opposite direction as the priority direction 712, with priority level 2m being the first omission and priority level 0 being the last omission.
