A skin care composition and method of using same

Abstract

The invention relates to a skin care composition and method for treating partially sensitive skin, particularly in the vulval area. The skin care composition includes a hydrating mixture of liquid saturated hydrocarbons, a plant extract with anti-inflammatory phytochemicals, and water. The skin care composition is designed for aerosol dispensing. The invention also relates to a method that involves providing the composition and applying it to the sensitive skin area as an aerosol. The invention is not limited to vulval skin and can be used for other sensitive skin areas.

[0003] [1] The present invention relates to a skin care composition and method of using same, and in particular to a skin care composition for treating at least partially sensitive skin.

[0004] [2] The invention has been developed primarily for use with at least partially sensitive vulval skin and will be described hereinafter with reference to this application. It will, however, be appreciated that the invention is not limited to this particular field of use.

[0006] [3] The skin of a subject provides both a physical and chemical barrier to provide a first line of defence against infection and disease. Some parts of the skin are particularly sensitive and susceptible to inflammation due to physical and chemical factors. Such parts of the skin include intimate areas of a subject such as genitals, breasts, anus, and the surrounding skin of such areas.

[0007] [4] Some areas of the skin are by their nature more susceptible as a result of their requiring a fairly constant stage of moistness, for example, the vulva and the anus, which can result in irritation due to dehydration. When areas such as the vulva and anus become dehydrated, they become susceptible to skin fissures that are not only uncomfortable, but such fissures can also increase the risk of infection.

[0008] [5] The present invention seeks to provide a skin care composition and method of using same, which will overcome or substantially ameliorate at least some of the deficiencies of the prior art, or to at least provide an alternative.

The subject reported that at 3 weeks of application, it was possible to reduce steroid cream application to the vulval skin. At week 4 the subject reported no further use of the steroid cream on the vulval skin.

17. A skin care composition according to claim 1, further comprising one or more of chamomile, coconut oil, jojoba, rose hip seed oil, safflower oil, shea butter, tea tree oil, and witch hazel.

18. A skin care composition according to claim 1, which is one or more of cruelty- free, ethical ingredient sourced, non-toxic, palm oil free, and limited waste producing.

19. A skin care composition according to claim 1, wherein the skin care composition is provided in compostable packaging.

20. A method of treating a subject having at least partially sensitive skin, the method comprising: providing the subject having at least partially sensitive skin; providing a skin care composition for application to at least part of at least partially sensitive skin of the subject, the skin care composition comprising: a cosmetically acceptable skin hydrating mixture of one or more liquid saturated hydrocarbon(s); a plant extract comprising one or more anti-inflammatory phytochemical(s); water; and wherein, the skin care composition is formulated for dispensing, in use, as an aerosol; and applying the skin care composition to the at least partially sensitive skin of the subject as an aerosol.

21. A method of treating a subject having at least partially sensitive skin according to claim 20, wherein the cosmetically acceptable skin hydrating mixture of one or more liquid saturated hydrocarbon(s) is present at a total concentration of 4 - 6% (v / v).

22. A method of treating a subject having at least partially sensitive skin according to claim 20, wherein the cosmetically acceptable skin hydrating mixture of one or more liquid saturated hydrocarbon(s) is a highly refined mineral oil.

23. A method of treating a subject having at least partially sensitive skin according to claim 22, wherein the highly refined mineral oil is liquid paraffin.

24. A method of treating a subject having at least partially sensitive skin according to claim 20, wherein the plant extract comprising one or more anti-inflammatory phytochemical(s) is present at a total concentration of 1.5 - 3.5% (v / v).

25. A method of treating a subject having at least partially sensitive skin according to claim 20, wherein the plant extract comprising one or more antiinflammatory phytochemical(s) is an Aloe sp. extract.

26. A method of treating a subject having at least partially sensitive skin according to claim 25, wherein the Aloe sp. is selected from the group consisting of Aloe ferox, Aloe perry! and Aloe vera.

27. A method of treating a subject having at least partially sensitive skin according to claim 20, wherein the aerosol, in use, comprises droplets of 30 - 60 m.

A method of treating a subject having at least partially sensitive skin according to claim 20, wherein the at least partially sensitive skin is at least part of one or more of an anterior urogenital triangle, an axilla, a buttock, an intergluteal cleft, a lip, a nose, periocular skin, perioral skin, a posterior anal triangle, and upper ventral region of the torso of the subject.

29. A method of treating a subject having at least partially sensitive skin according to claim 20, wherein the at least partially sensitive skin is skin of one or more of an anus, a breast, a nipple, a penis, a perineum, a scrotum, and a vulva.

30. A method of treating a subject having at least partially sensitive skin according to claim 20, wherein the skin care composition further comprises one or more emollient(s).

31. A method of treating a subject having at least partially sensitive skin according to claim 30, wherein the one or more emollient(s) is one or more of coconut oil, jojoba oil, and shea butter.

32. A method of treating a subject having at least partially sensitive skin according to claim 20, wherein the skin care composition further comprises one or more emulsifier(s).

33. A method of treating a subject having at least partially sensitive skin according to claim 32, wherein the one or more emulsifier(s) is one or more of cetearyl olivate, lecithin, and olivem 1000.

34. A method of treating a subject having at least partially sensitive skin according to claim 20, wherein the skin care composition further comprises one or more surfactant(s).

35. A method of treating a subject having at least partially sensitive skin according to claim 34, wherein the one or more surfactant(s) is selected from the group consisting of cocamidopropyl betaine, decyl glucoside, and sucrose cocoate.
