[0001] The present invention relates to a composition for strengthening the skin barrier comprising avenanthramide.
[0002] The skin serves as the body's primary protective barrier, conserving moisture and protecting it from the external environment. It is largely composed of the epidermis, dermis, and subcutaneous fat. The epidermis, derived from the ectoderm, is divided into an inner layer, the malpighian layer, composed of living cells, and an outer layer, the stratum corneum, composed of dead, flat, and dry cells that are anucleate. The epidermis maintains homeostasis through the continuous process of epidermal cell formation, differentiation, and shedding, and plays a crucial role in maintaining moisture.
[0003] The main constituent cells of the epidermis are divided into four layers: the stratum corneum, the granular layer, the spinous layer, and the basal layer, depending on the degree of differentiation of the keratinocytes. Gene expression varies depending on each layer. The stratum corneum, which constitutes the epidermis and is located at the outermost layer, is composed of 50% keratin, 20% lipid, 23% aqueous solution, and 7% moisture, and its thickness varies depending on its moisture content. The stratum corneum has the ability to absorb and retain moisture, keeping the skin supple and smooth. It must contain about 30% moisture to maintain a healthy skin condition. If the moisture content of the stratum corneum falls below 10%, the skin barrier becomes abnormal, the moisturizing ability of the stratum corneum decreases, and the skin becomes dry. In addition, it is known that when the moisture content of the stratum corneum is below 10%, the skin becomes dry and becomes the cause of skin trouble. The moisture content within the stratum corneum, which is created through regular keratinization, always remains at 10 to 20%. This is due to the sebum film, which is a mixture of sweat and sebum, protecting the skin from the outside and preventing moisture from evaporating from the stratum corneum. Beneath the stratum corneum, there are two major barriers of the epidermis, called tight junctions. They function as a secondary barrier of the epidermis by strengthening the bonds between cells and playing a role in regulating the penetration of substances. The skin acts as a primary protective barrier to preserve moisture in the body and protect it from the external environment. However, its function can be impaired and it can become dry due to various physical and chemical stimuli, such as a dry external environment, excessive use of cleansers, a decrease in the secretion of various hormones that regulate metabolism, and exposure to ultraviolet rays.In addition, due to various reasons such as artificial temperature control of heating and cooling due to recent environmental changes or changes in lifestyle patterns, various stresses in social life and skin stress due to environmental pollution, frequent washing due to makeup habits, and natural skin aging due to aging, the moisture in the stratum corneum decreases, causing the skin to become dry, the surface to become rough, and the skin to look dull and lack moisture, so the need for compositions for strengthening the skin barrier or moisturizing the skin is increasing.

However, research on the fundamental skin barrier improvement effects of oatmeal-derived ingredients remains limited.
